This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Major General John Small, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://ohio84th.tripod.com/small.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. The 84th Regiment

[edit]

Hi,
You asked how I know that the 84th (Royal Highland Emigrants) Regiment were not in the New York or Philadelphia Campaigns. Well, I thought that I knew. On February 26, I explained my evidence for so concluding on the Regiment’s discussion page under the heading, ‘Campaign Participation’ (I forgot to sign my post at the time, which I have now done.). I am pretty familiar with British regimental participation in the American Revolutionary War and all of the evidence that I could find (which I list on the Discussion Page) pointed to the 84th having no involvement in New York 1776 or Philadelphia 1777. I deleted the bits about the New York, Philadelphia/Monmouth and Penobscot Campaigns because they were uncited (Wikipedia policy encourages users to "aggressively" delete all uncited claims) and because they contradicted all of my available information. I thought (and still think) that the claim about the 84th defending Penobscot in 1779 was down to someone mixing them up with another regiment – the 82nd – and I thought (past tense) that the stuff about NY and PA was the result of similar misconceptions.
Nevertheless, I appear to have been misguided. A new post has been added to the 84th article's Discussion Page, right below mine, from Kim Stacy, who has done research into the 84th and found that companies from the Regiment in fact served in the 2nd Light Infantry Battalion of General Howe’s army; and who writes, “I will be happy to share what I have with you to date”. This is good news and I have emailed Kim Stacy via the address given on the page to make further enquiries. As regards incorporation of Kim Stacy’s findings into the article, everything depends on whether his/her (you don’t know whether a ‘Kim’ is male or female) sources have been published. Wikipedia policy absolutely forbids the use of what it calls “original research” as sources for its articles - to the extent that anything unpublished is out of bounds. I expect that the rationale for this regulation is that information citing published sources can be easily checked for authenticity, whereas information gleaned from archive research cannot. I am hoping that further information from Kim Stacy will be forthcoming.
In the meantime, if you have references that support the 84th’s involvement in the New York and Pennsylvania Campaigns, then do not hesitate to add your information to the article along with citations.
By the way, congratulations on all the sterling work that you have done for the article; helping to give the men of the Royal Highland Emigrants the place in history that they earned.
Best regards, Flonto (talk) 14:34, 3 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

[edit]

Hi! While I appreciate the contributions you're making to WP in areas that I also work on, I'd appreciate it if you added categories to your new articles (e.g. your recent article on John Small.

On a more specific note, you've asserted in two articles that Joseph Broussard was present at the Battle of Bloody Creek (1757). I'd really like to know the source for that, since I've not seen it claimed anywhere, and some writers explicitly claim the leaders of the Acadians in that action were unknown. Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as John Gorham (military officer), but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material. This article appears to be a copy from http://www.biographi.ca/009004-119.01-e.php?&id_nbr=1376&&PHPSESSID=ychzfqkvzape, and therefore a copyright violation. If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under allowance license, then you should do one of the following:

It may also be necessary for the text be modified to have an encyclopedic tone and to follow Wikipedia article layout. For more information on Wikipedia's policies, see Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

Hello - I thought that I had changed the text sufficently. I apologize given that this is apparently not the case. I am interested in reworking the page with other references than the Canadian Bio if I can have the opportunity. --Hantsheroes (talk) 00:04, 6 May 2010 (UTC)--Hantsheroes (talk) 00:04, 6 May 2010 (UTC)--Hantsheroes (talk) 00:04, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to to rewrite it at the temporary page linked to from the article. An admin will review the page in a week and take it from there. Keep in mind while writing that you have to avoid a close paraphrase (which is why I blanked it) and this is generally easier to do if you start entirely from scratch and relying upon multiple sources rather than trying to rework existing material from a single source. Cheers! VernoWhitney (talk) 00:43, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello -I have substantially reworked the piece and posted it. I will continue to add new references. Is there anything else I need to do to address this issue?--Hantsheroes (talk) 19:07, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take a look at it later today when I have more time. VernoWhitney (talk) 19:31, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I sat down and read them side by side and most of what you rewrote looks good. There were a couple of paragraphs where you just removed sentences that I feel are still a problem (the Siege of Louisbourg and the first paragraph of Battle of Grand Pre) as they still parallel the source too closely. The second one in particular I know that you removed some sentences, but what you left is still a copyright problem. I know rewriting is a pain, so I appreciate you taking the time to rework the article. I've narrowed the blanking so it only covers those two paragraphs. Image provenance

[edit]

You uploaded the image File:DonaldMacDonald84thRegiment.jpg, claiming on the description page that you created the work yourself. I (and the GA reviewer at Talk:Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge/GA1) are skeptical that you actually painted the image yourself. Can you tell me who painted the image (and when they painted it), and where it (the artwork, since this is presumably a photograph you took) is located? Thanks! Magic♪piano 13:35, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Taking a picture of an artwork doesn't make it your own creation. It looks like it is probably old enough to be Public Domain, or 70 yrs after the death of the artist. You should attribute it to the original artist and give the year it was created, this should clear up any problems. Heiro 17:43, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I could only find out that the image was purchased at auction and is in a "private collection. I'm not sure what this means in terms of wiki criteria for images and copyright. Maybe it needs to be taken down. Magicpiano - great editing on the site.--Hantsheroes (talk) 07:48, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Images that do not have adequate provenance -- obviously incorrect sourcing or licensing -- may be deleted (see commons:Commons:Deletion policy for a more complete story). This is not something I would pursue in this case, since, as Heironymous points out, the image is very probably in the public domain due to its age. The inadequate provenance means at a minimum that articles cannot pass formal (GA, A-class, or FA) reviews with such images in them. You should always seek to identify (1) when the image (i.e. the artwork) was created (2) by whom (3) when that person died (4) when the image might have been published. If you have a photograph of something three-dimensional (a sculpture or a painting in its frame), you also need the same information about the photograph, since it is then separately copyrightable. All of this information is needed to determine whether or not an image is in the public domain. (As a rule, you should also try to find out where the original artwork is located if you do not know. Finding this out may direct you to a museum website with potentially more information or a higher quality image.) Magic♪piano 22:03, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Suggest User page

[edit]

You recent edit on French and Indian War popped up and noticing your redlinked userpage, I immediately clicked on your talk page to congratulate you on making a great edit, when I realized that you have made over 3000 edits. User pages are a great place to tell people a little about who they are interacting with and make the Wikipedia experience less impersonal as well as give a sense of who has a firm grasp of Wikipedia and the code and stuff. I would strongly suggest making one, even if it only includes some of your interests editing here. Also, User pages make great desk tops, as you can see mine is a place where I keep links, and pages I have commitments to and other tasks that I am working on. Oh, and by the way, great eye for the link on French and Indian War! Sadads (talk) 00:43, 21 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Source question

Do you have the page numbers for your addition to the Massachusetts article? I don't doubt that it's legitimate, and its not that big of a deal, but page numbers should generally be given along with the book. (I'm trying to bring the article up to GA status in the next month or two, and it's likely the reviewer will want specific pages). AlexiusHoratius 20:41, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

well your doing well thus far...Would love to see you join a few Wikipedia:WikiProject like Wikipedia:WikiProject Nova Scotia ....That said i have two suggestion if you dont mind...one is and edit summary would help to make sure your editions do not get reverted...

A four-line window. The top line says "Edit summary (Briefly describe the changes you have made)". The second line is a blank input area. The third is one checkbox for "This is a minor edit" and another for "Watch this page". The last line contains buttons "Save page", "Show preview", "Save Changes", and a non-button "Cancel".
The edit summary field appears above the "Save page" button.

Then for references we have templates you can use if you wish...this will allow you to add more helpful info to refs like isbn numbers and links to books etc...See Wikipedia:Citation templates for all the different kinds (ps what your doing now is fine and this is simply a suggestion.)

Expulsion of Acadians

[edit]

Why do you keep removing the reference to the removals being ethnic cleansing? The removals are one of the history's classic examples of ethnic cleansing. The major historians of the topic (Plank, Faragher) are crystal clear on this. And this is old news. It already said "forced removal" - why do you take offense at "ethnic cleansing" - Here are three different dictionary and encyclopedia entries on ethnic cleansing: 1) "The systematic elimination of an ethnic group or groups from a region or society, as by deportation, forced emigration, or genocide." 2. "the attempt to create ethnically homogeneous geographic areas through the deportation or forcible displacement of persons belonging to particular ethnic groups" (Brittanica), and 3. "the expulsion, imprisonment, or killing of an ethnic minority by a dominant majority". Another encyclopedia uses this definition: "the elimination of unwanted ethnic groups by deportation, forcible displacement, or genocide." Here are links to articles, sites and books all openly acknowledging and discussing the removals as a well-known example of ethnic cleansing. They are by historians, government officials, legal scholars, etc., not some lone blogger:

There is not unanimity among leading historians that using the term "ethnic cleansing" is appropriate in referring to the Expulsion of the Acadians. I have tried to reference the different historians in the "Historical Comparisons" section on the Expulsion of the Acadians article. I haven't yet included historian John G. Reid who also disagrees with using the term. John Grenier is also quite critical of Faragher (see his preface to War in Nova Scotia). I think using the phrase "forced removal" is as close as the unanimity gets. I would recommend that we develop the Historical Comparisons section using some of the footnote content you put on the John Gorham article along with what I have. We could refer people to the historical comparison section the first time "forced removal" is used. Rather than the article taking a position on using the term ethnic cleansing, as you know, wiki is interested in showing the different sides of any particular issue. What do you think?--Hantsheroes (talk) 23:39, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Hantsheroes: I like the "Historical Comparisons" section very much. Its a great idea. Excellent how you presented many different sides and competing interpretations. That way you show people the range of the interpretation and this gives readers, who are so inclined, the opportunity to investigate different schools of thought. Well done. This is a great solution to competing interps. I may clean it up a bit, in terms of moving some of the citations that are in-text to footnotes. Keep up the good work. Breeze009 (talk) 05:57, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Great. I wonder if we should copy our discussion to the talk page of the Expulsion of the Acadians because I'm sure other editors will continue to run into this. Or perhaps the footnote is enough. What do you think?--Hantsheroes (talk) 16:15, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Father Le Loutre's War

[edit]

I'm just wondering which source(s) call it "Father Le Loutre's War"; I have never seen these skirmishes collected in this way before. Can you give page references, please. Verne Equinox (talk) 18:22, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

John Grenier puts forward the "Father Le Loutre's War" frame on these series of conflicts in his books The Far Reaches of Empire: War in Nova Scotia 1710-1760 (University of Oklahoma Press, 2008) and The first way of war: American war making on the frontier, 1607-1814 (Cambridge University Press, 2005). He outlines his rational for naming these conflicts as Father Le Loutre's War. Do you think I need to be more explicit about these references in the article? --Hantsheroes (talk) 00:40, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Very much so (the references). It is a helpful concept, but is is new. There aren't too many commoners with wars named after them! I think you also need to say something about Le Loutre himself and his motivations, such as we understood them. Presumably Grenier has something on this. I also note that your article on Le Loutre no few references for Le Loutre' bio. You should add them, including page refs. FYI, there is a coding trick in Wikipedia that allows you to provide inline page refs. It is this templeate: : p.xyz  that you place immediately after the "ref" as in this example. This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a search with the contents of Military history of Nova Scotia, and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: History of Nova Scotia. Hello Hantsheroes,

I am writing to you because you are the writer of the majority of the article. It has been noticed during the translation in French that Lovewell has died twice (paragraph Battle of Pequawket). Quite strange isn't it? Could you please have a look? Regards, Skiff (talk) 04:06, 21 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am not bias against new englanders, since I live in New England. However, the image of Church instead of Grand Pre, is as sinister as putting James Eagan Holmes` photo instead of the Aurora cinema photo in 2012 Aurora shooting. You forget that Church attack a people who had nothing to do with the Raid on Deerfield. Like attacking Virginians for what Massachusetts did. Furthemore, he went out of his way not only to kill people, burn their homes, destroy their crops, but scalp them as well. Church is nothing but another Holmes, and I have no bias against people living in Colorado for that.--Donnacona (talk) 01:39, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Father Le Loutre's War

[edit]

Tell me, why did you name it Father Le Loutre's War and not the Anglo-Mi'kmaq War? Furthermore, why Father Rale's War, and not the Anglo-Wabanaki War? The two priests were not part of all the conflicts involving the Abenakis and the Mi'kmaqs against the English colonists? Le Loutre was twice captured by the English and was not in Acadia for at least two years. Father Rale or Rasle, was also not involved in all the Abenaki retaliations.--Donnacona (talk) 15:33, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Overlap with Chignecto / Tantramar topics?

[edit]

Hi there. I've been updating Sackville, New Brunswick and have noticed that there's a fair bit of content that is repeated for example among the topics Tantramar Marshes, Isthmus of Chignecto, Beaubassin, Fort Beauséjour etc. I've already tried to discuss this on talk pages for Sackville and Tantramar. I had the idea that the Tantramar article could focus more on the natural environment, while the scope of the Sackville article would stick closer to the human history of the area. My concern is that anyone clicking around in the pages is going to be confused as to the context of various historical events. Also it is more difficult to maintain content that is repeated in a number of places. What do you think? --Cornellier (talk) 00:40, 4 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think it makes sense to put only the natural environment material on the marshes site. I see the repetition. I think beaubassin could be put with the Chignecto article. I see the chignecto article as covering more than the sackville area. What do you think?--Hantsheroes (talk) 04:21, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent Commons contributions

[edit]

I notice you recently contributed a number of images to the Nova Scotia Category of Wikimedia Commons. While the length and breadth of these contributions is much appreciated, they are in need of serious cleanup. Many, if not all, should be categorized (I have tried to do so for the war monuments, for example). But in addition, there are a number of contrubitions on the page that clearly relate to US states (Maine and Massachussets come immediately to mind). These should also be properly be categorized. Hello. I was a little frustrated that you reverted my edit to the Georges Island article without explanation. Only now did I realize that you likely did not provide an explanation because the reason for your revert should have been obvious - I had introduced a typo (in the spelling of Canada of all things) to the article. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Mi'kmaq Warrior Society requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a club, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. ~ twsx | talkcont | ~ 16:08, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from MadmanBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Fort Frederick (Saint John, New Brunswick), and it appears to include material copied directly from http://mwh52.wordpress.com/2013/09/13/september-13-this-day-during-the-french-and-indian-war-2/.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

Hi! I apologise for labelling your creation of this article as a "blatant copyvio", which obviously it was not. If you should again happen to copy content within Wikipedia, may I suggest that you follow the advice here, and clearly state the origin of the text in your edit summary? It might help avoid other misunderstandings of this sort. Thanks, regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:22, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I see some edits, but the material still looks like a wp:close paraphrase. Are you the author of the original?--S Philbrick(Talk) 21:18, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks.S Philbrick(Talk) 01:13, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I'm here for the same reason as Sphilbrick - the flagging by the bot. Could I ask you two things: could you please, when you copy content within Wikipedia, make sure that you give attribution, as discussed at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia#Attribution is required for copyright; I know of course that you are the principal contributor at Northeast Coast Campaign (1745), but you're not the only one. And, please, could you perhaps leave an edit summary when you edit? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 12:24, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Actually User:Justlettersandnumbers, unless you are discussing a different issue, the material came from an external source, not within Wikipedia. I failed to follow up on the point I should have made, because I got distracted. @Hantsheroes, we need some way of verifying that it is OK to copy that material. There are at least two options. The easiest one, if it is possible, is for you to add a note to the original source indicating that the material is licensed with an acceptable license, such as {{cc-by-sa-3.0}}. Another option is to send an email to OTRS, stating that you are the author, and providing the license. More details at Donating copyrighted materialsS Philbrick(Talk) 12:32, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, Sphilbrick, I'm probably well adrift here, not for the first time (and, I fear, probably not for the last, either). I did not see any problem with the external source identified by the bot because that content was posted on 5 September 2013, and the closely similar content at Northeast Coast Campaign (1745), later copied without attribution to the new article, was created by Hantsheroes on 26 February 2012. Am I misreading that, or did you come across some other external source? I was about to provide attribution for the in-wiki copying, but will now hold off until this is fully clear. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 12:49, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, I don't think you are adrift, looks like you have done more homework than I have. I focused on the creation date of the present article which was 20 June 2014, and missed the existence of the 1745 campaign article. Nice catch, which means it is likely the Wikipedia material came first. So you r information about how to properly attribute when copying within Wikipedia is on point. It might seem odd to some, that you have to attribute material that you wrote yourself, but that's the rule, as I understand it.--S Philbrick(Talk) 12:58, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's a mild relief, thank you. I've put a {{copied}} tag on the two talk pages. If in future Hantsheroes would be kind enough to the same for any similar situations it would probably save time all round. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 14:41, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both for your attention to this matter. I was copying wiki from text I contributed to wiki. I will note when I copy material from one wiki article to another in the future and will be more diligent about adding edit descriptions. --Hantsheroes (talk) 16:44, 2 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Northeast Coast Campaign (1724), and it appears to include material copied directly from http://mwh52.wordpress.com/2013/01/28/january-28-this-day-during-the-father-rales-war-1722-1725/.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

a new Battle of Placentia page

[edit]

Hi, i see your new article on a Battle of Placentia. I am getting frustrated trying to see a source you included in the article: https://archive.org/stream/newvoyagestonort03laho#page/n277/mode/2up. Is there any way to stop that page from streaming on and on? Does that source actually have material on that battle? Any help appreciated. By the way, i am trying to figure out how "New Pages Patrol" works by trial and error, mostly error so far. Your page is a relatively nice candidate among the "unreviewed" pages there. I do think it should have some more material though, don't you? It doesn't say enough to make me want to add it to the Battle of Placentia dab page yet. Anyhow, whether you can comment and help me or not, thanks for your attention, and keep up your good work. cheers, --doncram 00:17, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Maine forts and 10-inch Nova Scotia guns

[edit]

I noticed your article on Fort Mary (Maine). I've also been improving articles on Maine forts recently, although my references largely limit me to post-1783 forts. Anyway, should you decide to do anything on the 10-inch ex-US guns that are still at McNutts Island, Nova Scotia, I may be able to help. I wrote the 10-inch gun M1895 article and included the Canadian Lend-Lease guns in it. I'm a member of the Coast Defense Study Group (www.cdsg.org) and can help in locating resources on 20th-century US forts. RobDuch (talk) 02:32, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Troupes de la marine

[edit]

Hi! I reverted back to the original version because many regiments changed names but they have their own articles. Example: Régiment de Béarn (1684), Régiment Béarn (1762), Régiment Bourbonnais, Régiment d'Agénois (1776), 29e demi-brigade de bataille have through the years changed names and are all linked in some way, but they have separate articles. I agree with this because changing of a name is not just cosmetic, it has a profond change, just like when compagnies change names, they change administrations, politics, strategies, etc., and often many people get fired, such as myself. If you look at city names, Constantinople became Istanbul, but the two cities are not the same. I live in Québec City, and when performances are given by the Troops de la marine, they dress up as Troop de la marine, and when they give performances of the Compagnies Franches de la Marine, they dress up differently and have a different flag. The former is a 17th century regiment, the later 18th century. After Jean-Baptiste Colbert died, things gradually changed which could have to do with the change in name. Furthermore, so many books and articles talk about Troops de la marine, that it is good for the reader to know that we have an article on them. You and I like history a lot, or we would not be here. I see so many new articles on atheletes. As soon as they start a professional sport, their name shows up in wikipedia and they have not even provened themselves. Many people have done great things in life and their names never show up on wikipedia. Have a nice day!--Harfang (talk) 16:55, 6 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

References

[edit]

Hallo, Thank you for your contribution to Thomas Wood (reverend), but please remember that every reference ought to make sense when read on the screen. You've left a couple showing just the page number. Please make sure that the reference is the sort you could put in a printed work or a school paper, with the web link just being an added bonus. Someone shouldn't need to click a link to find out what your sources were: they may be looking at a saved article offline, or a printout from the encyclopedia, or just have a very poor connection. The Citation Tool is a huge help in making proper references: I think it's available by default, click on "Cite" in the bar above the editing window, then use the "Templates" dropdown menu to choose "book" or "website" etc, then just fill in the fields. Your contributed article, Aaron Cleveland (minister)

[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Aaron Cleveland (minister). First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Aaron Cleveland. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Aaron Cleveland – you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Wgolf (talk) 23:17, 17 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Abijah Willard

[edit]

The article Abijah Willard has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non notable. Only references to him are the linked journal and some genealogy websites.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Edward Winslow (scholar), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Henry Lloyd. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Dear Hantheroes

Apologies if this is not the correct way to make contact, but you posted a picture of the Iron Cross that purports to be that beloning to Rudolf Hess. In doing so you cite the fact that the Cross is in Canada. Are you able to prove this please? To my knowledge the Cross was purchased by Stephen Prior (Author of Double Standards), though he did die some years ago. Thank you,

Jtg harris (talk) 16:11, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I took the photo of the Hess cross that is part of the Parks Canada collection at the Halifax Citadel in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They claim the cross belonged to Rudolf Hess. I have no way to verify that. Parks Canada could probably be contacted. I think the story was that it fell into the hands of a Canadian soldier that brought it back to Canada. Hope this helps.--Hantsheroes (talk) 23:11, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

[edit]

Hello, Hantsheroes. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

George Wait Babcock

[edit]

Please add more complete bibliographic sources for George Wait Babcock. References like " [Allen, MPR, 220]" are ambiguous to the reader, and references merely linking to external sources do not allow verification in printed or mirrored versions of Wikipedia articles. Thanks. --Animalparty! (talk) 02:12, 7 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The article Alexander McKay (educator) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No evidence of any notability. The refs are simply an obit , an obit of somebody with a similar name and a doubtful image. The article does not make clear exactly what he is suposed to be notable for. Many simple articles could be written about non-notable individuals. Fails WP:GNG

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.  Velella  Velella Talk   01:12, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The reference for the article is not an obituary. The reference is to an article in the distinguished Dictionary of Canadian Biography. McKay was very influential in the field of education in Nova Scotia.--Hantsheroes (talk) 01:26, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summaries, multiple consecutive edits

[edit]

Hello, and thanks for your contributions. I'd like to make a couple editing suggestions for you to consider:

  • Please make a habit of providing an edit summary when you make a change to an article. Doing so makes it easier for your colleagues here to understand the intention of your edit.
  • Plus, it will be easier for you and your co-editors to collaborate on articles if, instead of making multiple consecutive edits in rapid succession on an article, you use the "Show preview" button to view your changes incrementally before finally saving the page once you're satisfied with your edits. This keeps the page history of the article less cluttered. Thanks in advance for considering these suggestions. Eric talk 03:35, 8 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Acadiensis, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Please preview, consolidate, and summarize

[edit]

Hello. Once again, here are a few editing suggestions to make it easier for you and others to collaborate on the encyclopedia. Please preview, consolidate, and summarize your edits:

  • Try to consolidate your edits, at least at the section level, to avoid cluttering the page's edit history; this makes it easier for your fellow editors to understand your intentions, and makes it easier for those monitoring activity on the article.
    • The show preview button (beside the "publish changes" button) is helpful for this; use it to view your changes incrementally before finally saving the page once you're satisfied with your edits.
  • Please remember to explain each edit with an edit summary (box above the "publish changes" button).

An article you recently created, William James Almon, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. 1. Edit the page
  2. Remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}

But, please remember to explain why you think the article should be kept on the article's talk page and improve the page to address the raised issues. Otherwise, it may be deleted later by other means.

I've undone your change to this article. Please discuss it on the article's talk page. It is not correct to state that slavery in Canada ended before the 19th century, and there are other inaccuracies. The legal situation was far more complex than you make it out to be. The colonies that would later form Canada had their own laws and legal rulings. For example, it was Upper Canada that ruled that no new slaves could be imported into the province, leading to it becoming a destination for escaping slaves, not Canada as a whole. Thanks for your contributions. I'm here to repeat the request that many have made, I believe, over the past decade:

  • Per WP:FIES please provide an edit summary.
  • Please do not make rapid multiple consecutive edits which clutter the article history and exacerbates the problem of no edit summaries.

Although you have promised (see above) to act on these requests, there has been no change. You may "save time" by not writing an edit summary, but you are actually taking time away from watchers who must take their own time to perform a diff, etc. --Cornellier (talk) 10:43, 28 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. – wallyfromdilbert (talk) 19:36, 9 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article 1776 Project has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The only references are to opinion articles and the organization's own website. I searched Google and was not able to find any evidence of significant coverage by reliable sources. I only found additional opinion articles, many of them written recently by individuals listed on the organization's website.

– wallyfromdilbert (talk) 19:59, 9 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

1776 project

[edit]

Hi, Hantsheroes. You are adding material about individuals supporting an organization called the 1776 Project, but the only source you cited for that material was the organization's own website. Information included in articles should be noteworthy, which is generally demonstrated by coverage in independent reliable sources. I also do not believe the organization to be notable, and I have proposed its deletion because I have been unable to find independent coverage of it in reliable sources. I think you should hold off adding any more information about the "1776 Project" to articles until you have reliable (non-opinion) sources that are not from the organization or its website. Thank you. – wallyfromdilbert (talk) 20:03, 9 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'm not sure what you mean. There are more sources than simply the website of the 1776 Project - see the articles in the The Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic and Quillette. These are reliable sources.--Hantsheroes (talk) 00:25, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

quillette is not considered reliable --Cornellier (talk) 02:46, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The Wall Street Journal article is an opinion piece, and the Atlantic article is a commentary piece, while the Quillette source looks like a blog article written by one of the members of the 1776 Project organization. None of those are reliable or demonstrate notability. Also, the Atlantic article has nothing to do with the "1776 Project" organization, and its inclusion in the article looks to be simply misinformation. – wallyfromdilbert (talk) 08:02, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Wallyfromdilbert:@Hantsheroes: for the record I have declined the PROD. I'm iffy on if the topic will survive AfD, but that is now the next step if notability doubts persist. Best. SamHolt6 (talk) 04:10, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
SamHolt6, no worries, and thanks for the ping. I'll probably take it to AfD next. I think there are several sources that mention it, but last time I looked they seemed to be all opinion articles. This organization seems new, and so there may be additional sources now or in the future that make it more notable. – wallyfromdilbert (talk) 06:04, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • I don't know what you were trying to achieve with this edit, but it is not working: it's not "one newspaper sources"--the newspaper article contained the review for a book which has been widely reviewed. Had you done a bit of the work you would have noticed that it's not just the book that has that expression; the term has currency. If you were also that IP--please don't be editing while logged-out. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 12:50, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for clarifying. That was the only edit I made. I never edit while logged-out.--Hantsheroes (talk) 01:31, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
