[edit]Hello, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I've noticed that you have been adding your signature to some of your article contributions, such as the edit you made to Robert Percy Douglas. This is a simple mistake to make and is easy to correct. For future reference, the need to associate edits with users is taken care of by an article's edit history. Therefore, you should use your signature only when contributing to talk pages, the Village Pump, or other such discussion pages. For a better understanding of what distinguishes articles from these type of pages, please see What is an article?. Again, thank you for contributing, and enjoy your Wikipedia experience! Thank you. -- Blanchardb -Me•MyEars•MyMouth- timed 10:38, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

The article George Burns, 2nd Baron Inverclyde has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- no indication of how this might meet WP:BIO
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}}
will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. RadioFan (talk) 22:10, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
Naming conventions
[edit]The article you created, Revd Dr John Burns, Dr John Burns, and Dr Allan Burns do not conform to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people). Do you know what their middle names are? Providing a middle initial is probably the easiest way to get these named correctly. If you cannot, then I will come up with something on my own. Thanks, Pdcook (talk) 16:48, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed maintenance templates from John Burns (surgeon). When removing maintenance templates, please be sure to either resolve the problem that the template refers to, or give a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry, as your removal of this template has been reverted. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia, and if you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you. Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia, as you did with this edit to the page Allan Burns (surgeon). Such edits constitute vandalism and are reverted. Please do not continue to make unconstructive edits to pages; use the sandbox for testing. Thank you. Fieldday-sunday (talk) 14:02, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- I don't see how this edit constitutes vandalism. It was a good faith edit and the author was attempting to improve the article. Pdcook (talk) 14:17, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- I have reverted the reversion made by Fieldday-sunday to be last version by Shipsview. Please continue to improve this article, and you might want to check out Wikipedia:Citing sources to see how to properly format citations. Thanks, Pdcook (talk) 14:25, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
Burns biographies
[edit]Don't worry about the middle names if you can't find them. The current naming of the articles is consistent with Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people). I would recommend at this point not to worry as much about adding details to the articles. It would be better to review Wikipedia:notability (people) and Wikipedia:citing sources to be sure you get these articles referenced in such a way that confirms notability. Some other editors may not be very patient and may put some of these articles up for deletion. Thanks for contributing and if you have any questions, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page. Regards, Pdcook (talk) 14:49, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
Edit summaries
[edit]Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. When you make a change to an article, please provide an edit summary for your edits. Doing so helps everyone to understand the intention of your edit and is especially useful when reading the edit history of the page. Thank you. Pdcook (talk) 19:21, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
Again, thank you for your help. I have enabled the auto reminder. Shipsview (talk) 21:09, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
Burns
[edit]Hello Shipsview. Yes, the dates are now left unlinked throughout wikipedia. I can understand your confusion, there was a time when all dates were linked, for a number of reasons. This practice has now been discontinued, but many articles still have the dates linked, pending someone finding and unlinking them, as is happening sporadically. So now you can save a bit of time and not link them. (WP:MOSDATE has more on this). Yes, I have an interest in shipping, I'd be glad to help out if I can, let me know how you get on! Best, Benea (talk) 06:59, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
John William Burns, 1st Baron Inverclyde
[edit]You asked about John William Burns, 1st Baron Inverclyde. I am unable to confirm the middle name, but I saw that you had created John William Burns. I have moved John William Burns, 1st Baron Inverclyde to John Burns, 1st Baron Inverclyde, which I think is more consistent with WP:MOS. -- Eastmain (talk) 20:29, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
References
[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute to the encyclopedia, but when you add content (particularly if you change facts and figures) please cite a reliable source for the content you're adding or changing. This helps maintain our policy of verifiability. Take a look at Wikipedia:Citing sources for information about how to cite sources and the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you.
The above is standard Wikipedia blurb, but please do remember to include references when adding information to articles. I have added a reference to BBC News for the statement you added about the cancellation of the Lake of Menteith Bonspiel. Best wishes! --Deskford (talk) 22:52, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced BLPs
[edit]Hello Shipsview! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 317 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:
- John Douglas, 21st Earl of Morton - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs) · FENS · JSTOR · TWL

Darnaway Castle
[edit]On behalf of WikiProject Scottish Castles, thanks for starting the Darnaway Castle article! This has been needed for some time as its quite an important castle. I have copyedited the article, putting in links, I hope you can continue to improve it, some more inline citations would be good, as would further information on the 19th-century rebuilding of the castle. Thanks again, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 11:59, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
Ballikinrain
[edit]No problem. Shipsview. One problem I noticed is that the references don't have enough information. WP:CITET has templates you can copy and paste in. Only fields you fill in will show up. This should be fixed, as it stands, it's hard to tell if the article is well-sourced or not. Keep up the good work on castle articles, The Interior (Talk) 19:15, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
Re: Rannoch Barracks
[edit]Hi Shipsview. To change article titles, you have to "move" the page. To do this, click on the arrow next to the star, close to the edit tab, and click the Move link. You just type in the page title you want and give a reason, and mostly it will work. There are some exceptions, see Wikipedia:Moving a page for full details. Interesting article by the way, though I changed the lead a little as most of the article is about the actual barracks rather than Lord Pearson's place in the country. Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 21:09, 5 March 2011 (UTC)
Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference
[edit]Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.
On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true
. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false
in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.
For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.
Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 19:49, 14 March 2011 (UTC)
Cakemuir Castle
[edit]Hello Shipsview, and thanks for another worthy addition to Wikipedia, Cakemuir sounds like an interesting place. It helps to be a bit more specific with references, so instead of linking to a website's "front page", like http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/, make a link to the page with the actual information you are citing, in this case [1]. You can use the template {{cite web}} to make this easier and it looks better too. Same for books: try to add details such as ISBN and page numbers, again there is a {{cite book}} template to help. Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 09:10, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you for the tips, Jonathon. I am struggling with detailed references. I think you are involved with a Wikipedia meetup in Edinburgh? Is this something I might find interesting and useful? Shipsview (talk) 09:34, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
- No problem. I'm not actually involved in any meetup, it was suggested by User:Victuallers, but I'm not sure if anything is happening. And having never been to one, I'm afraid that I'm a poor judge as to whether they might be interesting, probably depends on whether we Wikipedians are scintillating folk or a bunch of nerds.... Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 13:23, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Hello again. Please note I've removed a large chunk of text from this article, since it was copied directly from http://www.argylls.co.uk/museum and subpages, and as such is subject to copyright. You can use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences: say it in your own words. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 13:10, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
- OK fine. You might want to look at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more details. Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 10:19, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the check-up on Craigiehall. Ritchie Camp is mentioned in the Evening News piece, but you're right, its not in the MOD note. I hadn't actually appreciated that the Camp and the RAF base were separate places, so I'll amend it accordingly. Thanks, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 10:28, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
Clan articles
[edit]Hi the reason we do not have lists of people with the given surname or even wikipedia books of people with a particular surname in a Scottish clan article is firstly just because they have that surname does not necessarily mean they should be associated with that Scottish clan. Also there are pages purposely for listing people of specific surnames, such as :Douglas (surname) and Douglas (disambiguation). It is acceptable to use these two types of pages linked within a clan article. QuintusPetillius (talk) 16:15, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

About Archibald Douglas (d. 1741)
[edit]Hi Shipsview!
Just few little things. I noticed that this article included some text that appeared to be somewhat similar to the "www.douglashistory.co.uk" mention of him.
Also, "Archibald Douglas (d. 1741)" doesn't seem to me to be the best of article titles. There are of course a number of notable Archibald Douglas's. Some of them include their styles. Does this particular Archibald Douglas attract a style? I would greatly appreciate your help with this.
--Shirt58 (talk) 14:11, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
- Shirt58, I inherited the article title as it was already a link, though there was no article. I agree it is an unhelpful title. He was 13th Laird of Cavers. Do you want to change it?
The two articles are similar - because the Douglas Archives website is mine, and uses the same source: "The House of Commons, 1690-1715". Shipsview (talk) 14:47, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

[edit]You had a page in your sandbox which stated that "this article is still copyright and requires a re-write before publication".
All pages on Wikipedia are considered 'published' as soon as they're saved. They're publicly viewable, and remain like that until/unless they get deleted. As such, you cannot leave text like that on a Wikipedia page, even if it's in your userspace. For a few hours, sure. For a few days, well... maybe, if you're actively working on it. But after 30 days untouched... no. It had to go. DS (talk) 14:05, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
- You can have it back if you're going to work on it within the next few days. Are you? DS (talk) 12:03, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
Multiple verifiable sources that support a statement are better. That is why I put {{refimprove}} on it.
I have no problem if you would like it removed. →Στc. 21:41, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

copyright vs cut and paste
[edit]wikipedia does not want cut and pasted text from somewhere else. Furthermore, even if a copyright on the original work has expired it is quite possible that someone else renewed the copyright. However, an editor qualified in copyright issues will review and give us the final disposition. Why risk exposing wikipedia to infamy of copyright. Zvezda1111 (talk) 17:01, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
Do not know, I am not a lawyer. Typically though they do not want us to cut and paste stuff from somewhere else, anyways. That's because copyright issues are thorny but wikipedia lawyers have other reasons not to take cut-and-paste - beside copy right. It is tricky - they do not want original research, but they also dont want cut and paste. So what it leaves us is with writing stuff in our own words but referencing it heavily to external sources. For example, you could rewrite this article in your own words and keep referencing that source and others. Standard2211 (talk) 17:08, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
Dear Sir or Madam, I am responding to an msg you left on my talk page. Please do not take offense. If you have rights to the materials you posted, you should send wikipedia an email from the domain associated with your website granting wikipedia permission to use that content. Otherwise it is impossible for us to tell who is who, and who owns what. On the printed source for another article - if someone reprinted that book, they may have renewed the copyright... Zvezda1111 (talk) 17:31, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
- For reference the Archive.org version of the article says: 'There are no known copyright restrictions in the United States on the use of the text'.

File permission problem with File:Ardgour House, Argyll, Scotland.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Ardgour House, Argyll, Scotland.jpg, which you've attributed to William Douglas. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.
If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 11:58, 12 December 2013 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Maclean of Ardgour, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Morven (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Morton Castle
[edit]Now just hang on a minute. It appears from the info in the Morton Castle page that it belonged the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Douglas Earls of Morton. And I would be interested to know when it became known as Morton Castle ? was it under their occupation ? Yes the article says that the earldom was named after a different Morton, but it seems more than likely that the castle was named after the earldom, given the four earls. It seems a little too much of a coincidence for the castle to have been named Morton but not because it was a seat of the Earls of Morton. And where are your sources ? The Morton Castle article has a list of books but no proper references.QuintusPetillius (talk) 16:05, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Craigend Castle
[edit]Hi Shipsview
Thanks for your message about Craigend Castle. If you look again at the history page you'll see the sentence in question was not removed by me but the next editor. You're free to reinstate it of course, preferably with a source showing it's still on the market, otherwise it risks sounding just like local gossip or original research.
What I'd like to know about the place is how it's managed to end up such a hopeless ruin in such a short time. Was there a fire or something?

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Duke of Hamilton
[edit]Hi Shipsview, unfortunately I do not have any sources to verify either way if the article does or does not list the correct children and heirs of the Duke, and its not a topic I am familiar with. You could try reverting on the basis that your are reverting back to the original version, and that a source is required in order for it to be changed from the original. That might get the ball rolling with finding out the correct names. QuintusPetillius (talk) 16:49, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
The article Stewart Douglas, 22nd Earl of Morton has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.
If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Citation styles
[edit]Thank you for this edit (Revision as of 21:02, 6 June 2016) to the article William Douglas of Balgillo. A couple of points though:
- Please do not change the consistent style of citing in an article (WP:CITEVAR). In this case the style was short inline citations linked to long citations in a "References" section, with the long citations using the template
{{Citation}}
(in style Citation Style 2) unlike{{Cite web}}
which you used which is in Citation Style 1). - If you use the website https://archive.org you will usually be linking to a book. If you do so WP:CITE recommends that you include page numbers and do not include access-date (no need to a book) so rather than creating a link like this one:
- {{Cite web|url=https://archive.org/stream/historicalrecord00goffuoft/historicalrecord00goffuoft_djvu.txt|title=Full text of "Historical records of the 91st Argyllshire Highlanders, now the 1st Battalion Princess Louise's Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, containing an account of the Regiment in 1794, and of its subsequent services to 1881"|website=archive.org|access-date=2016-06-06}}
- which display thus:
- please create one like this:
- {{Citation |last=Goff |first=Gerald Lionel Joseph |year=1891 |title=Historical records of the 91st Argyllshire Highlanders, ... to 1881 |url=https://archive.org/details/historicalrecord00goffuoft |location=London |publisher=R. Bentley |pages=[https://archive.org/stream/historicalrecord00goffuoft#page/75/mode/1up 75]–76}}

What is a "Cite drop-down list"? -- PBS (talk) 18:53, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
- Really? When you click 'Edit' for, say, this paragraph, and then 'Cite', there is a template option for the four citation types. Shipsview (talk) 20:35, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
- I never even noticed it (but then I have been editing for longer than that would have been an option), and I don't see what that has to do with anything (other than for new editors which you are not), as there are many other citation template options than those four (see the list in the collapsed box below):

Alan Inverclyde
[edit]I'm afraid 'endow' implies he gifted the buildings. Check Inverclyde National Sports Training Centre. He was president of the SCPR, which purchased the Hills Hotel in Largs (it was never owned by him, nor was it called 'Inverclyde House'). They then named it after him when he died in office in 1957. Similarly, Inverclyde was the Chairman of the British Sailors' Society, and the Inverclyde Centre in Greenock was a new build, for and by the BSS. So as it stands the sentence is a mixture of misleading and inaccurate statements.--Stevouk (talk) 18:57, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
An endowment does not necessarily signify the gift of (in this case) a building, but a gift of funds that can be used to fit out or maintain it. A financial endowment is a donation of money or property to a nonprofit organization for the ongoing support of that organization. Wikipedia. Shipsview (talk) 20:52, 5 April 2018 (UTC)

Diannaa Thank you for your interest in the John Watson Tadwell Watson article, and for working towards compliance with the rules on copyright. I do understand why you have taken this step. However, you removed material that is not subject to copyright, and cited a website, finds.org.uk, which I had not previously seen, nor indeed been aware of. The interesting point here is that finds.org.uk, which is, I think, a subsidiary of the British Museum, is a CC-BY site, and if I had used their material, it would have been easy for me (or you) to include an appropriate citation. By removing key material, the article no longer has the 'notability' factor, and thus risks failing another test. But, hey ho... Shipsview (talk) 19:40, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

Drysdale and septs
[edit]Hi, yes, in answer to your question I think there should only be a link to the Drysdale sept if it goes to a page specifically about the family who were a sept of Clan Douglas. There would have been people called Drysdale, not only in other countries, but in other parts of Scotland who were not actually part of the Clan Douglas. This applies to most sept names in fact. I believe that it is misleading to link to a surname list or disambiguation page because it gives the false impression that all of the people listed there belong to the said clan.QuintusPetillius (talk) 19:22, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

[edit]She most definitely was born in 1961, but even public records say '65 which means she lies about her age on legal docs. This will be hard to prove. FWIW, the birthplace she gives appears to be a lie as well, since there's no record of an Illeana Hesselberg in The Massachusetts Birth Index [2].

DYK for Cultybraggan Camp
[edit]On 16 August 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Cultybraggan Camp, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status.
