"United States" in article titles
I have noticed "United States" and "U.S." are both used in titles, whereas MOS:ACROTITLE seems to prescribe the full name in the title, unless the abbreviation is significantly more well known. Request for edit/revision
If you find yourself wanting to correct some listcruft and WP:OR, the List of active separatist movements in North America is pretty bad and needs some refining.
Trimmed down a bit already. I feel like some obsessed fringe editors over years got it to the state it is in. I also feel like lumping in autonomy and regionalist groups with hate groups is pretty bad. Not sure how best to organize the article, but it seems like each entry should be so obvious that it has its own article already, and really only needs a single bullet point per 'movement'.
Thanks for taking a look. Rauisuchian (talk) 09:58, 22 October 2020 (UTC)
WikiProject Iowa
wp:WikiProject Iowa is inactive, but I'm running into articles that could be tagged as such, and aren't tagged with template:WPUSA. Maybe we could update the WPIOWA to be part of WPUSA, like it is for the states like Colorado, etc., that are tied into the WPUSA template? If there's no objection, I'll be glad to set it up. Funandtrvl (talk) 02:56, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- I am not part of this specific WikiProject, but that makes sense as a tie-in, especially if other states are already. Rauisuchian (talk) 10:05, 22 October 2020 (UTC)

Does "[insert Cabinet position here]"-designate mean anything?
With the flurry of recent Biden administration picks, we're seeing a lot of changes to the articles of prospective cabinet-level appointees along the lines of "X is the [position]-designate". Do people know: (1) if there are RS that are using this phrase (I haven't seen any so far); and/or (2) if this is a real thing in federal law? AFAIK, you are either the Secretary of X or the nominee to be Secretary of X, neither of which would be possible for a prospective Biden Cabinet member since he can't officially/legally nominate anyone until January. Being the designated Secretary of X doesn't seem like it means much, at least to my knowledge. AleatoryPonderings (???) (!!!) 22:35, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

- On November 19, 2019 you marked the Puerto Rico talk page with the project you say you are trying to revive. Since then, more than a year later, you haven't made one edit to the article although I'm sure the article could benefit from your contributions.
- In 2015 Jaguar marked thousands of Puerto Rico articles with the WikiProject UST and also did not make one edit for the benefit of the articles.
- As you may or may not know, the WikiProject Puerto Rico, etablished 14 years ago, is quite active. I myself have made thousands upon thousands of edits to PR articles. So before you start marking all articles of fat people on Wikipedia with WikiProject Fat People, we know Puerto Rico is a Territory of the US, have a talk with your project members and consider how you will assist in improving the articles. Merely marking the article with a Project is not helping. --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 11:51, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

Unreferenced article with a slanted POV that has clearly not shown signs of improvement in years
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Hello, |
Rhode Island's new official name (as of November 2020)
As mentioned on the main Rhode Island article:
Formerly named the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations since its accession to the Union in 1790, voters in the state approved an amendment in November 2020 to the state constitution, renaming itself the State of Rhode Island. This change took effect when the results were certified on November 30, 2020.
I noticed that some articles like Rhode Island statistical areas still mention the state's old name.
Not sure if this is the right place to put a note like this. In any case, I wanted to make a note that Rhode Island's official name is worth updating across a number of articles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Drewda (talk • contribs) 22:10, 10 March 2021 (UTC)

New 1991-2020 normals being released
It's now official. NOAA has released the new climate normal for the 1991-2020 period so now, we need to start updating the climate boxes to transition from 1981-2010 to 1991-2020. Before there were some edits back in April claiming that 1991-2020 data was released but this was not official as normals accounts for missing data while averages doesn't. I have been recently editing some pages already in updating the climate data to the newer 1991-2020 data (see Template:Atlanta weatherbox as an example for the main stations and (Port Huron) for other stations as examples to follow. Please feel free to edit the climate data in major cities in the United States to change it to the 1991-2020 data since it is officially released to the public. I have added some recommended sources below; if you have more, then feel free to add it. Thanks.

- NWS for basic data and records
- NCEI data for stations (can search by station name, or map, and can download as csv or pdf file)

Hi everyone, I am a student currently enrolled in a subject which requires the improvement of a stub article. I am writing on the 2017 Elvis Presley documentary 'The King'. I would really appreciate your advice and feedback over the coming weeks as our edits and contributions will make up our final grades for the subject. Is there a policy anywhere regarding "Riot" vs. "Protest"?
Someone brought it up here, with regards to the Boston Tea Party. In my experience most sources do seem to use the phrase "protest" for this subject (though often with references to "mobs" as opposed to "protesters"), so I'd be hesitant to make sweeping changes to this article. But I imagine this issue comes up frequently – anyone know of any specific guidance or policy on this type of thing? Rovenrat (talk) 22:33, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

Kiwi Camara
Hello! Sarah here, attempting to update and improve the Kiwi Camara article on behalf of DISCO. I've disclosed my conflict of interest and shared a link to a draft article at Talk:Kiwi Camara, but so far I have not received any feedback from other editors even after posting similar requests for help at WikiProject Biography and WikiProject Tambayan Philippines. I've outlined problems with the current article, which is mostly a Background section with two Controversy sections related to the same incident. I've also worked to draft a more well-rounded biography which relies on news organizations over student newspapers. Are any members of WikiProject United States able to review the concerns I've identified alongside the draft, then update the live article appropriately? Thanks in advance! Multiple related articles that seem to basically be about the same subject
While working on getting the main article - Mountain Meadows Massacre - to possibly being a WP:GA I've become aware that Wikipedia has 8 different articles about various aspects of the Mountain Meadow Massacre. Does Wikipedia need all of these articles? Can any of them be combined...should any of them be combined?
- Mountain Meadows Massacre and Mormon theology
- War hysteria preceding the Mountain Meadows Massacre
- Conspiracy and siege of the Mountain Meadows Massacre
- Killings and aftermath of the Mountain Meadows Massacre
- Investigations and prosecutions relating to the Mountain Meadows Massacre
- Remembrances of the Mountain Meadows Massacre
- Mountain Meadows Massacre and Mormon public relations
- Media coverage of the Mountain Meadows Massacre
The articles are rendered in the Template:Mountain Meadows massacre series as:
- Theological factors
- War hysteria
- Conspiracy and siege
- Killings and aftermath
- Investigations and prosecutions
- Remembrances
- LDS public relations
- Media depictions
I've also posted about this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject History - see this section, but haven't gotten any responses. I've read through much of the articles and they don't seem all that different. To me the "Conspiracy and siege", "Killings and aftermath", "Investigations and prosecutions" articles, especially, seem somewhat redundant and repetitious in subject matter. I am interested in what this WikiProject's editors think about all this. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 16:21, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

State short descriptions
I noticed that all 50 states have a short description of "State of the United States of America". I was thinking of doing an AWB run to make this simply "State of the United States" for concision (and to match the corresponding category, and wider "State of [country]" category structure); I wanted some level of consensus first, so I am posting here. — Goszei (talk) 08:00, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, because the short description matches what is in Wikidata right now, you would need to change Wikidata too, or the articles will end up in the "hidden" category of Category:Short description is different from Wikidata. Wikidata, in this case, uses the more formal, long name of the USA. Also, template:infobox settlement, of which template:infobox U.S. state is a wrapper template, is supposed to be adding short descriptions automatically, but when I try that, it doesn't match what is in Wikidata either. Does anyone have any input on this problem? --Funandtrvl (talk) 23:01, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
- I also think because Wikidata is a multilingual site, that "... of America" is used, because several other countries are also "United States", like: Estados Unidos Mexicanos. --Funandtrvl (talk) 23:08, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
- The Wikidata description is often used as the default for a local short description but the two do not need to match. Also, {{infobox settlement}} will add a reasonable short description in most cases — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 07:27, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

County seats templates by state
Hello, all. I have been, over the last several months off and on, working on creating templates listing the county seats of each state, then distributing said templates on the articles of the county seats. My first was Montana county seats, and my most recent as of this post is Connecticut county seats. I have created 11 such templates as of this post, improving the amount from 13 to 24. Therefore, there are 26 county seat templates left, and I intend on working on this until all 50 states have their own templates. If anyone wants to pitch in and make more such templates for states that do not have one yet, then distribute them to the relevant pages, I would much appreciate that. I believe that it is beneficial to the encyclopedia to be able to navigate through pages of county seats effectively.
I have also created a template for the templates, placed below, so as to navigate through county seat templates, and also to track progress. I would love to see all those links be blue someday. And it can happen pretty soon, too, especially if at least several people are working on it. Cheers.
Mungo Kitsch (talk) 07:36, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
- Started Template:Idaho county seats; but should this list be by County Name, and not Seat/Town name? Such that selecting Power County, Idaho, would actually take you to: American Falls, Idaho? (Going through the County name to get to the County Seat?) Mjquinn_id (talk) 16:07, 9 August 2021 (UTC)
State-line-straddling towns
I've found two cases where towns straddle the MD-DE state line so far. In both cases there are two articles, one for each state. For Delmar, Maryland and Delmar, Delaware there are two incorporations and thus two mayors etc., but the reality is that it's a single town that the state line runs through; there's even only a single town website. Hickman, Maryland and Hickman, Delaware is a worse case, both because the whole thing is unincorporated, and because the dividing line is the road that the community straddles, with houses on one side in a different state from those on the other; and there are no other streets.
To my mind, each of these should be one article. The current split for Delmar is marginally arguable from a necessary legal fiction POV, but from what I can see everyone views the two halves as a single town. The Hickman case is less justifiable because there is no legal fiction to be reproduced. So I'd like to merge both of these, but I would like to know how we've handled this in the past, especially in terms of article naming. Mangoe (talk) 03:46, 9 August 2021 (UTC)
- There's also Marydel, Delaware and Marydel, Maryland. For the Delmar case, this is interesting - it notes that the two sides create their own revenues and ordinances, but then the pool the revenues and have a single town manager. The legal fiction and separate stuff like incorporation and ordinances makes Delmar tricky. Hickman should certainly be merged, IMO to Hickman, Delaware and Maryland. We seem to handle unincorporated communities in two states that way - see Boydsville, Kentucky and Tennessee, Dukedom, Kentucky and Tennessee, Pruden, Kentucky and Tennessee, Arkmo, Arkansas and Missouri, and presumeably others. Template Resurrection:Idaho
I want to gather Consensus on resurrecting a long dead, separate template for Wikipedia:WikiProject Idaho, as I want to get some Task Forces going. But it would require the removal (probably) of some parameters from the Main Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_United_States template... and a fairly large SUBST, which is going to look pretty odd in View History... In General, I think I would 1) LEAVE the US Template; 2) Drop the ID Specific parameters 3) ADD the Idaho Template (Same "class", same "importance").
Could you please reply with your consensus (or oppositions)? with rationale please... Mjquinn_id (talk) 15:51, 9 August 2021 (UTC)
- User:Mjquinn id: Can you provide more context? Also, what do you mean by "require ... a fairly large SUBST"? DesertPipeline (talk) 09:43, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
- So, The WikiProject Idaho template was rebuilt as a wrapper a couple years ago. A wrapper to the US Template. Being thorough, they also put into place an auto WP:SUBST that rebuilds the Idaho template into the US template with the ID flags. In trying to rebuild the project, I need to reverse that. Finding the US Template WITH the ID=yes flag and reverse it; dropping ID parameters and ADDING the new ID Template. (Currently in the template's sandbox).
- ) I didn't want to perform a change on some 2,000 pages without getting some kind of consensus with the US Project first. Especially, pulling the ID flag from the US Talk Banner... unless you are ok leaving it there?
- ) Though I have worked with templates for quite a while, this would be the largest change that I have pulled off. Might be nice to have another template expert looking over my shoulder? - Mjquinn_id (talk) 14:17, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

RfC on table style
- The following discussion is an archived record of a request for comment. Please do not modify it. No further edits should be made to this discussion. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
Should the style of articles beginning with "United States congressional delegations from" match the table style and broader format of featured lists such as United States congressional delegations from Indiana and Utah, or the articles for almost all of the other states, such as Alaska and California, or should each article be kept where it is per MOS:VAR? theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (they/them) 20:59, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
Factors to consider:
- What are the advantages and disadvantages to each style?
- Should the style vary based on the size of the state and the length of its history in Congress?

Gonna need some visual examples, here. GoodDay (talk) 22:03, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
- The best examples are United States congressional delegations from Utah and United States congressional delegations from Oregon, and I put examples of the two tables above. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (they/them) 22:40, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
- I reckon the best way to go, is the maps version. Otherwise, you're gonna have a ton of images in the California delegation article. GoodDay (talk) 23:42, 27 July 2021 (UTC)

- @Theleekycauldron: I'm now noticing United States congressional delegations from Massachusetts, which is the first page I've seen that uses {{Party cell}} templates. Might this be a good compromise between readability and getting the most possible information across? I still find it a tad hard to visualize compared to party shading, but it's certainly easier than utilizing a separate cell, and I can definitely see how the text would be more readable this way. --WMSR (talk) 15:09, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
- @WMSR: first of all, I'm using yo instead of ping forever. Thank you for that, that's fantastic. Second, i'd be more than happy to match the Massachusetts style (with some variations state-by-state), but is it within MOS:VAR for us to update the tables that way? theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (they/them) 22:13, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Theleekycauldron: I think so, because many of the party shading templates are not compliant with MOS:COLORS, which can cause accessibility issues (especially those of some smaller parties). That said, I'm not sure whether {{Cell party}} would work quite as well on pages like Political party strength in Alaska, for example. --WMSR (talk) 22:23, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
- @WMSR: fantastic– I think my next project is going to be fixing up United States congressional delegations from Alaska, then. I'm going to close this RfC within a day. Also, it's not a huge problem if I switch the senate template so that the colours oppose each other, right? because otherwise it's just gonna be a pain. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (they/them) 22:28, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

- @Theleekycauldron: Gotcha. I'm going to have to do some work on the {{Party cell}} template then to make a parameter for which side to shade. Been a while since I messed with parameters like that so I may need some time (unless you can do it easily). --WMSR (talk) 22:47, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

- Finished documentation. Check out United_States_congressional_delegations_from_Alabama#United_States_Senate to see how I envision it being utilized when I made the new params. Obviously, if there's a better way, I'm all ears. --WMSR (talk) 23:58, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
- @WMSR: damn! put a lot of work into the Alabama senate part, too- props. I think the party colouring should go outward, instead of being inward and right next to the alternating colours denoting term? Makes it less overwhelming on that front. Also, with regards to the names, it should probably be one name throughout multiple parties, or several separated by hard boxes–the middle ground seems like there's something off but i'm open to either way? just suggestions theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (they/them) 00:22, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Theleekycauldron: My thinking was that having it in the middle makes it easier to visualize the balance of the delegation in any given Congress. It's also how Utah was laid out (and Hawaii previously). I am also not sure about what to do with party switchers. Only putting the name once would make it off-center and it would not be clear which party goes in the parentheses. This was sort of my best attempt but I'm sure someone has a better idea. I wish others would chime in! --WMSR (talk) 00:43, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

- @Theleekycauldron: How do you feel about dashed lines for party switches? I updated the template and think it might once again be the best of both worlds. For alternating term colors, i think we just set the width on the column to a super low number. --WMSR (talk) 02:35, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

- Provide more rather than less information, and provide it in the form that is easiest to read. The main tables in these articles are almost identical. They get very different in the "Historical timeline" sections, and the version with separate tables instead of one giant table is much easier to make sense of, but if there's information types missing from it then it should be expanded to include them if we think it's info of encyclopedic interest (which it likely is, though a discussion won't hurt). — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 14:50, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

Race in 2020 Census data
I have two comments about the recently released 2020 census data, which can be noted in this diff[1]:
- Each of the five races (White, Black, Asian, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Pacific Islander) is enumerated both as race alone, and as race alone or in combination. We need to decide which will be listed first in the article, and whether both will be given in the infobox.
- There has clearly been a significant change in how Hispanics/Latinos are counted. Hispanics who identified their race as White alone dropped from 27 million in 2010 to 13 million in 2020, while Hispanics who identified as two or more races rose from 3 million to 20 million. How should this be dealt with, especially in the articles Hispanic and Latino Americans and White Hispanic and Latino Americans? Will they still be considered as white, or not? —Lights and freedom (talk ~ contribs) 03:17, 6 September 2021 (UTC)
- A similar discussion about this is ongoing at Talk:United States#How to approach 2020 census data (ethnicity and race). I suggested that we start listing both race alone and in comination on all articles where it is necessary to list this data. 2020 census data on race and ethnicity is not directly comparable to data from past censuses, due to changes in methodology, something the census bureau has cautioned. I see some unsourced BLP claims, and some unsourced non-notable namedrops. 2005 AFD on it was kinda leaning WP:NOPAGE though most of the discussion focused on how poorly the article was written; I leave it to regular America editors to decide whether it still applies since a lot has happened in American politics since then. Why does the United States control what is happening in the Western Pacific?
While we appreciate what the USA is doing to keep the world safe from power-mad would-be world dictators, does it extend to blocking normal content and editing of pages that cover what is happening in the Western Pacific Naval Symposium.
It rightly offends my pedantry when I'm unable to add a [sic] to the quoted statement:
The Western Pacific Naval Symposium are a series of biennial meetings of the Pacific nations to discuss naval matters held on even numbered years. A WPNS workshop is held on odd numbered years in between the symposiums.[1]
When clearly, the Western Pacific Naval Symposium [is] a series...

It is the more appropriate venue, has a wider audience, and you are more likely to get a definitive response, if not an immediate resolution, from either the community (via consensus) or from any of the several administrators in attendance. Replacing 2010 population with 2020 population data
{{infobox settlement}} has a "|population_as_of" parameter, which means it's easy to tell which locations are in the United States and still use 2010 data. Request for comment: Consistent article titles re: ethnic groups in the United States
Should we seek to make the titles of entries about ethnic groups in the United States more consistent? ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:27, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
If you poke around Category:Ethnic groups in the United States, or more specifically Category:Ethnic groups in the United States by city and Category:Ethnic groups in the United States by state, you'll notice inconsistency with how articles are titled. For instance, in Oregon there's Hispanics and Latinos in Portland, Oregon, History of Chinese Americans in Portland, Oregon, and History of the Japanese in Portland, Oregon.
Category:Chinese-American history shows some consistency across city entries using "History of Chinese Americans in XXX". Category:Korean-American culture by city is fairly inconsistent: there are entries using "History of Koreans in XXX", "History of Korean Americans in XXX", "History of the Korean Americans in XXX", and "Koreans in XXX". The categories Japanese-American culture by city and Hispanic and Latino American history are inconsistent.
Here's my question: Should we seek to make the titles of entries about ethnic groups in the United States more consistent?
If so, there seem to be several options:
- Use "History of XXX in YYY" (example: History of Chinese Americans in Portland, Oregon)
- Use "History of the XXX in YYY" (example: History of the Japanese in Portland, Oregon)
- Use "XXX in YYY" (example: Hispanics and Latinos in Portland, Oregon; Koreans in New York City)
- Use "XXX culture in XXX" (example: Hispanic and Latino culture in Portland, Oregon)
I'm thinking we should decide if the words "history" or "culture" are helpful in the titles of such articles, or if simply mentioning the ethnic group and geography are all that's necessary. If we can come to a consensus, many page moves will be required to make entries consistent, but then we'd have a solid standard moving forward. I invite all to weigh in, discuss pros and cons, and select a preferred format (if applicable).
Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:27, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
- I prefer "X in Y" because it's the simplest and broadest. History is not necessarily culture and vice versa, and "History of" articles are not limited to that, also including the current demographics and culture as well. The other inconsistency though is whether "Americans" is included, e.g. History of Korean Americans in Boston vs History of Koreans in Baltimore – I would include that. Reywas92Talk 19:11, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Another Believer: what is your brief and neutral statement? At over 2,300 bytes, the statement above (from the
{{rfc}}

- Then it needs to be first, with its own timestamp, otherwise Legobot cannot pick it out from the rest of the text. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 06:45, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Redrose64: See brief and neutral statement in bold. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:00, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
- I agree with "X in Y" (3) due to its simplicity and broader definition. As Reywas92 mentioned, I think the inclusion of "Americans" should be decided upon, but I don't have an opinion on that part. Bsoyka (talk · contribs) 04:28, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
- Strong oppose A and B, support C in consistency with most other Wikipedia pages (Americans in the Philippines, Americans in the United Kingdom, Americans in Pakistan, Americans in India, etc. etc.). Using "history" seems to assume that such an ethnic group no longer exists or has been assimilated, that the for example French ethnicity of a French person who migrated to the USA 1 week ago is "part of history", even when that person might still identify as a French and not as a French American or American of French origin. "Culture" is unorthodox and has a less broad scope. Super Ψ Dro 08:57, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
