Divine Comedy illustrated by Botticelli DYK

Hi Yoninah. Sorry for disturbing you again, but this is a rather unusual case. The DYK has passed but I would like to ask your opinion regarding the picture of the DYK. It is the picture of a medieval manuscript and its quality is not great, although its importance is high. If you think it cannot be used as a DYK image, then perhaps, I may have to change the hook, or try to adjust the picture further. Please see the nom page. Any advice would be very welcome. Thank you again. Dr. K. 23:33, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

@Dr.K.: IMO the thumbnail image is very faint. We have so many other sharper and more colorful images that I personally wouldn't promote it. You could ask at WT:DYK to get other, more expert opinions. Best, Yoninah (talk) 19:22, 4 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you Yoninah for your opinion. I may have to find another picture or leave it as is, to be promoted without a picture. Dr. K. 19:26, 4 February 2017 (UTC)

Prep 1

Hello Yoniah, is there anyway you can bump Template:Did you know nominations/John Henry Wise to Prep 1 with the image? I just realize I got the date of the Super Bowl this year wrong. If not it is fine. Thanks.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 04:43, 5 February 2017 (UTC)

I came to your talk page to enquire how the John Henry Wise nomination got moved from its special occasion slot to today, but now I see why! On another matter, what do you think of Template:Did you know nominations/Al Zab with regards to neutrality? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 09:15, 6 February 2017 (UTC)
@Cwmhiraeth: the problem I see with the article is that it reads like a news report. For an article about a town, it doesn't say anything about the town. I'll post something on the nomination page. Yoninah (talk) 18:57, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

Yoninah Easy fix, in this is just a copy and paste from the other editor's talk page. That's all any of these manual notifications are. The DYK Update bot has been dead for the last two updates. However, I went by the nominations template rather than whatever was on the queue, since I had nothing to do with the queue, and the bot died before it got around to distributing the credits. You don't show up as a co-editor on the nom template, and I don't know the background on why it was out there since May 2016. But hope this works for you. — Maile (talk) 19:49, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
@Maile66: I added myself to the co-creation credits after fixing up this nomination that was never transcluded. Thank you for taking care of this. Yoninah (talk) 20:02, 11 February 2017 (UTC)

No inclusion criteria specified for the inclusion of this non-free image in this specific article (AGAIN)

I've warned a number of you about this. You promoted an article at DYK which was illegally using a non-free image. Please don't do that again. DYK for Sue Anschutz-Rodgers

On 15 February 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Sue Anschutz-Rodgers, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that over a 22-year period, Colorado cattle ranch owner Sue Anschutz-Rodgers increased her stock from 33 cows and a single bull to 1,700 head of cattle? Mifter (talk) 22:46, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Yoninah, this is now on the Nominations page under January 23. The reason it isn't on the Approved page any more is that it was promoted from there to Prep 2 despite your "/" being the most recent icon; so I restored it to Nominations after I pulled it from prep to avoid it happening again. (My feeling is that pulled nominations should go to the Nominations page anyway, since they should have an icon on them indicating that the nomination is not, at the moment, approved or eligible for promotion.) I imagine that, given a bit of time, a hook that satisfies everyone will be proposed and approved. BlueMoonset (talk) 07:58, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

@BlueMoonset: I thought you said in the WT:DYK announcement of the new approvals page that nominations that have been approved but still need work should stay on the approvals page. But it makes sense to return them to the nominations page. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 09:41, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
No, that was EEng. I don't agree with him, but ultimately it's a consensus call, assuming we come to one. Softwarewise, they do stay: the bot doesn't move them back from Approved to Nominations (so they don't automatically get moved back), but once an approved hook is promoted and subsequently pulled, it needs to be added back somewhere; I personally think the Nominations page is best, since a manual step has to be done regardless. I also wouldn't object if someone decided to manually move hooks back once it's determined they need more work. BlueMoonset (talk) 19:26, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

ninas → NINAs

I've reverted your lowercasing of these in Al Hirschfeld. As I wrote in the edit summary,

These refer to the name "NINA" written all in capital letters. That's what most people know them as; lowercase "nina"/"ninas" just looks weird and wrong.

If you Google Hirschfeld NINAs, you'll see quite a few references to "NINAs", lots to "Ninas", and few if any to "ninas". Only the crossworders seem to use that form, and with their specialized meaning. I've kept (restored after the reversion) your link to wikt:nina, refining it to point to just the English sense (wikt:nina#English), and quoted the definition in an explanatory note. --Thnidu (talk) 05:04, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi! Please check the nomination page for Tren Interurbano de Pasajeros Toluca-Valle de México. I have submitted a reply to your comment on the title change. FunksBrother (talk) 01:00, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

Yoninah, in an unfortunate bit of timing, your review of this nomination on February 16 was completed two hours after TempleM's most recent Wikipedia edit; it's been three and a half weeks since then, and there has been no response, nor is there likely to be. Did you want to try addressing the hook issues yourself, or find someone who is willing to try? If not, we're rapidly approaching the point where we'll need to give a deadline for settling the matter, and if it comes to that, marking it for closure for having an inadequately supported hook. Thanks for whatever you can do here. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:56, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

Maymie

Your comment that it wasn't cited, makes it seem as if the file should not have qualified for DYK, i.e. "to qualify for DYK, the hook facts must be cited in the article". It never occurred to me that Madame would even be questioned, as in my part of the world, this is common knowledge. When she became Mrs. Aiken, it was cited, with a source that tied in all of her names. Madame Aiken is Mrs. Aiken. "Madam ... used here as the title for married/widowed women of social standing." [1], "madame (the equivalent of 'Mrs')" [2] This is why I find the venue so frustrating. What you see as an uncited claim, I see as one that was already adequately cited. I have zero problem with ownership or actual critique that adds something, but DYK just seems like too much nitpicking. That isn't aimed at you personally, it repeatedly occurs from multiple participants. I get that you are just trying to prevent problems later down the road and I appreciate that it isn't easy, but it is why I have pretty much stopped contributing to DYK. Freeman family murders

Really. I am away all weekend and I come back to find you've deleted my article Freeman family murders. I spent hours developing it and putting in research. You don't need to delete the article do you? If there's copyright issues then tell me before deleting it so I can correct them. I don't see how this can be when I retrieved the perpetrators D.O.B.s from prison records that are not available in any news site or article, this is all original research. Please revert the article to how it was so I can correct the minor copyright issues rather than just disabling the page completely... The article was getting 100+ views a day https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&range=latest-20&pages=Freeman_family_murders. It is a well known case and I don't appreciate you just deleting it without giving me a chance to fix it. A serious topic like this that needs wiki coverage is not a good thing to just remove all of a sudden. Please revert it or allow me to and I'll fix it tomorrow. Inexpiable (talk) 21:01, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

Well why can't I just change it now then on the normal page and problem solved? No need to go through all this is there. Tell me personally about the copyrighted stuff and I can fix it starting tomorrow. So can I delete the note and just start removing the copyright stuff? Inexpiable (talk) 21:56, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

@Inexpiable: you can try, but I'm not sure you're allowed to. I went through each source using this tool. Yoninah (talk) 21:57, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
@Yoninah: Ok thanks useful tool. 65%. Most of it is related to one particular sub section in the page which isn't even mainly about the murders. Lol come on man I can fix that in 10 minutes was all of this really necessary? Not having a go but maybe something to think about in the future, at least give a user a chance to change it when it's something so simple. Inexpiable (talk) 22:01, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
@Inexpiable: Sorry. It didn't look simple. And you didn't seem to be bothered by it when the DYK reviewer mentioned it. Yoninah (talk) 22:06, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
@Yoninah: I meant in terms of it being featured in DYK, not the copyright violations. I've made a start now and got it down from 65% to 49%. I don't know what's considered acceptable, I'm assuming this isn't good enough and it needs to be under 40? A lot of it is to do with quotes stated by the suspects however rather than what is written in the article. Surely quotes from the suspects themselves should not count as copyright issues? The earwig tool doesn't seem to pick up on that. Inexpiable (talk) 12:49, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
@Inexpiable: "Acceptable" means that word-by-word and sentence-by-sentence copying is not present. WP:LIMITED is allowed for things that cannot be described any other way, such as the murder instrument or the criminal sentencing. The previous version, however, copied whole paragraphs describing the murders verbatim from the sources. You are allowed to reprint short quotes, or put quotes around sentences you pull from a source, but the quoting should not be extensive. When I review an article for copyvios, I do not rely on the Earwigs percentage, but look at each source. Even something that gets a 15% on Earwigs can contain copyvios. Yoninah (talk) 13:48, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

Really don't see how I'm meant to rephrase "the car he was driving ran out of gas in Missouri". We're under 50% now surely it's good enough? The other descriptions are good and factual so they can't really be reworded. Inexpiable (talk) 21:13, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

Inexpiable No, they're copyvios. If you can't figure out how to reword things, ask at WP:GOCE. Yoninah (talk) 22:09, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

Don't know if you are interested, but I've run across a whole family of notables while working on Nina Simonovich-Efimova. Her mom had Jewish heritage and created the first kindergartens in Russia; her dad was a noted pediatrician, her husband was her business partner, the couple founded the Efimovs' Puppet Theatre, etc. There's lots of red links to be worked and additional details to clear up before it can go for GA, but it looks promising. If you have interest in working on any of it, please do. SusunW (talk) 15:41, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

Hi Yoninah. What should've been a straightforward DYK nom has turned out to be a long-winded discussion over whether the article was actually a copyvio (even though I had already provided a Duplicate Detector diff. Could I trouble you to have a look and give your two cents? Much appreciated. —Bloom6132 (talk) 15:25, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the review, Yoninah! Just one question – how did you get the 2,681 character count? When I said I increased the article to 2,733 characters, I wasn't trying to inflate the amount. That's the number I got after inputting javascript:importScript('User:Dr pda/prosesize.js'); getDocumentSize(); into my URL bar. Just wondering what tool/script you utilize and whether it'd be more accurate for me to use it in the future. Cheers! —Bloom6132 (talk) 13:01, 26 March 2017 (UTC)

Women's History Month DYK hooks

Yoninah, I moved three more hooks into that section the other day, but I think that may end up being too many: the just-completed Prep 2 is led by one of the older ones, but none of the new three were selected. That leaves only one more set, Prep 3, which will run on March 31, before the month is over.

I can always move them back, though of course I'll wait until Prep 3 has been filled to do that. One of the hooks there was approved by Cwmhiraeth, so she won't be able to promote it if she's the one building Prep 3... Just thought you'd want to know. Thanks. DYK for Bonfils Memorial Theatre

On 29 March 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Bonfils Memorial Theatre, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent a congratulatory telegram upon the opening of the Bonfils Memorial Theatre in Denver? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Bonfils Memorial Theatre. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Bonfils Memorial Theatre), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

DYK: What's Your Raashee?

Hey! I just saw that my hook was seen by many people. The film article was seen by 12, 540 times and the actress' article over 41,000 times. Where these things are added? I don't know much about these things. I will appreciate your help.Krish | Talk 04:59, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

@Krish!: Congratulations! I added What's Your Raashee? to the DYK Statistics page (see here). The hits for the actress' page don't count, since that page already existed. But now you see how adding a pretty face to a nomination drives up the hits! Best, Yoninah (talk) 14:53, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

Improper use of non-free images

Hi Yoninah, you placed The Great Friendship into a prep today, but the lead image was a violation of fair use. I've fixed it but I thought you should know. The Rambling Man (talk) 08:48, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

@The Rambling Man: thank you for catching that. I have uploaded free images myself, so I'm aware of the template that must be filled out. I did look at the template for this image, and thought it looked different from the ones I've done, but wasn't aware that it was a violation of fair use. Yoninah (talk) 14:04, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Nancy H. Hensel.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Nancy H. Hensel.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:10, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Question about doing DYK reviews

Hi! I had messed up once, and crossed wires. You'd generously mentioned I could ping you with questions. I want to try again, but I can't figure something out. When I look at these ones, they all seem to say "reviewed", even when there is none of the information for a DYK review. Do I have to find one that doesn't even have that? Or does that refer to some other kind of review, not the DYK review? (Sorry if this is a mega-dumb question. I'd really like to contribute, but I'm finding it hard to work out how to.)Hildabast (talk) 00:18, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Oh .... I think I get it... that's what they reviewed, not a review of that DYK. I'm going to give it a try! Hildabast (talk) 00:20, 11 May 2017 (UTC)
I had a go, but I'm concerned I may have put the review in the wrong place. I'm so close to working out how to contribute usefully, just not quite there yet! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Did_you_know_nominations/My_Brother%27s_Husband Hildabast (talk) 00:58, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Images with DYK hooks

Hello Yoninah. I noticed that you moved the Puddletown DYK into Prep 6, but didn't include the image. Are there criteria for defining when an image is suitable for a hook? The reviewer didn't mention any problems with the image. The Puddletown DYK was the first time I have added an image to a hook, and I should like to know what the criteria are before I decide to do it again. QPQ time frame

Is there a time frame for when a QPQ is needed? I reviewed a DYK nomination at Template:Did you know nominations/Lady Hambro and 27 days without a review seems more than a bit too long. SL93 (talk) 20:32, 28 May 2017 (UTC)

@SL93: some nominators take longer than others. You just do the review and wait for BlueMoonset to come along and give an ultimatum :) Yoninah (talk) 20:34, 28 May 2017 (UTC)
Ok. I will do that. I guess nominators not doing a QPQ before the nomination doesn't sit right with me. SL93 (talk) 20:35, 28 May 2017 (UTC)
@SL93: I understand. But not everyone likes the QPQ rule. Yoninah (talk) 20:37, 28 May 2017 (UTC)

Another image

You should not have placed this nomination into the image slot in Prep 1. It is not approved for use with the image. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:09, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

@Cwmhiraeth: Oops, sorry about that. I just thought that the hook didn't work without an image. And I thought about how to incorporate statues into the hook, but it didn't seem to work. I moved the hook down in the queue. Yoninah (talk) 07:50, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

Schager

If you like you can add this nice story [3][4][5] of him rescuing Barenboim's Siegfried (in Siegfried), by stepping in for the tenor who was supposed to sing on shortest notice, at least for the first act. That was before his Siegfried in Götterdämmerung in Berlin, for which he was scheduled in 2013, and he had to sing Tamino, or was it 1. Geharnischter the same night. - I was lucky: heard both tenors and Barenboim this year. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:40, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

I just found - looking for something else - this detailed review [6] of reviews of that first Tristan appearance, reviews p. 52, story beginning p. 49, all worth reading, - also adding some, "intensity and authenticity"? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:50, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

Carmen Sandiego

Hi Yoninah, I noticed yesterday you moved a bunch of Carmen Sandiego video game articles from "Where in X Is..." to "Where in X is..." with the lowercase "is". Just a note that the original capitalisation was correct – as outlined at MOS:CT, some words like articles, prepositions and conjunctions are not capitalised in proper-name titles, but other short words including verbs (like "is") are capitalised. I've moved all of the articles back to their correct titles. 97198 (talk) 11:59, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

@97198: well, that's news to me. I did it because another editor moved one of them. Glad you have the tools to make all the titles consistent. Yoninah (talk) 14:08, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

@E.M.Gregory: Hi. I saw your note at the beginning of the week and thought it's a great article and something I'd like to contribute to. Then I got sick and have been on antibiotics ever since. If you can expand it 5 times by the 7-day deadline, I'll be happy to nominate it for DYK. Hopefully I'll even be able to work on it this weekend. Best, Yoninah (talk) 23:11, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
  • Well it is certainly more that 5 times expanded. On the other hand, the topic is so vast that it could fill a book, and I am not at all sure that I have done justice to it. I would be grateful for your opinion.E.M.Gregory (talk) 17:40, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

DYK Question

Hi, Yoninah. Hope all is well. I nominated an article I recently created to DYK (see Template:Did you know nominations/Hotelito Desconocido). Do you think there is/could be a problem with the hook? There is an overwhelming amount of information on the hotel's alleged involvement in money laundering (reasonable belief for crime is different in the U.S. and Mexico, but both took legal action and shut down the hotel based on the evidences they had in hand). Since several of my recent nominations have been pushed back, I thought I'd reach out to an experienced DYK contributor like yourself for a second opinion. Thanks, ComputerJA () 23:43, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

Thunderbolt (Savin Rock)

I wonder if you might reconsider part of this edit? I agree that it makes the hook more obvious, but it loses a lot of the hook appeal that made it interesting for people to click through to (particularly for a quirky last hook in the set). I don't think there was anything misleading in the hook as it stood. Thanks. IronGargoyle (talk) 22:14, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

@IronGargoyle: I just thought it was totally vague. A "Thunderbird" could be anything. I could see readers passing on it rather than clicking out of curiosity. But I'll ask for other opinions at WT:DYK. Yoninah (talk) 19:27, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

Sorry, I was in a rush this morning. Perhaps Cwmhiraeth should know. The Rambling Man (talk) 13:12, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
There's something very odd about this supposedly having been on DYK before. The talk page wasn't created until 6 June 2010, the same day that the article was originally created, yet the talk page was created with a DYK template that states it appeared on 8 December 2009, almost six months prior. I think what we have here is that the user who created it copied another talk page's headers entirely—in this case the female mayor of Mumbai—and changed everything over to match the name of the (male) mayor of Kolkata. If you look at 8 December 2009, the following hook ran on DYK:
... that Shraddha Jadhav, who was recently elected as the Mayor of Mumbai and chief of India's richest municipal body, is known for her "elegant dressing"?
The supposed DYK hook for Chatterjee read:
... that Sovan Chatterjee, who was recently elected as the Mayor of Kolkata and chief of India's richest municipal body, is known for her "elegant dressing"?
Since Chatterjee is male, this supposed hook is clearly not about the same person; I have taken the liberty of removing the clearly incorrect DYK template from the page, and have just restoring the article to the prep it had been in. BlueMoonset (talk) 21:42, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
Pinging The Rambling Man so he knows why this has been restored; I did note that the stub template had been removed from the article before restoring the hook to Prep 5. BlueMoonset (talk) 21:43, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, I had already removed the stub template. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:46, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
Amazing detective work, Sherlock! Yoninah (talk) 22:37, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

Reply about 2 weeks

I hope you're right. I hope hooks get used after two weeks old if nominated previously on time. Sagecandor (talk) 15:46, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

@Sagecandor: what's your concern? Right now hooks are being promoted within about a month's time. There are those that are sitting longer, waiting for a re-review, but as we don't have so many reviewers, they will continue waiting until someone addresses them. As long as a hook is on the approved noms page, it will never be erased. Yoninah (talk) 16:20, 2 July 2017 (UTC)
Oh okay great, thank you for the clarification, Yoninah, that's most reassuring ! Sagecandor (talk) 16:25, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

Sue Alexander

Hi-I removed the WP Arizona template after I read your comment; the templates are useful because they help users in the various wikiprojects keep track of the articles relating to the wikiprojects. I will leave it to your judgment if you feel the article needs any templates. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 18:11, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

@RFD: thanks. I'll add the WP Illinois template since she did go to university there, and also wrote books based on her childhood in Chicago. Best, Yoninah (talk) 18:40, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

During your edits to the above, you removed a citation which was referenced three times. I've located it and restored it, but please be careful as we don't want these articles to go the main page with big "citation error" flagged at the bottom of the page. The Rambling Man (talk) 08:05, 17 July 2017 (UTC)

@The Rambling Man: Oops. Thanks for catching that. Yoninah (talk) 08:07, 17 July 2017 (UTC)

Prep 3 was correct

Yoninah, Alex Shih was slightly premature in changing over to 24 hours, but the change is happening; we just needed to get Queue 6 out at midnight so the main page would be loaded at midnight every 24 hours.

I'm hoping that Maile (or some other admin) will get the time between updates back to 24 hours now that the main page has just been updated, so Prep 3 will be loaded on July 31. Sorry for the confusion, but things should be straightened out shortly. If Maile isn't still around, I'll find another admin to make the change. BlueMoonset (talk) 00:12, 28 July 2017 (UTC)
