Mentee Vs Adopted User

I noticed you have adopted two users what is the difference between an adopted user and having a mentor? SkyeWolf369 (talk) 14:26, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

@Panini! I forgot to ping you but I was also wondering if you can have a mentor and be an adoptee at the same time with 2 different people. SkyeWolf369 (talk) 14:34, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Good question; the growth team mentorship feature is soon to be given to all users, but currently rests at 10%. A mentor is assigned a small batch of these new users (I believe I have around 26,000 but barely any of them reach out), and those new users can reach out to me at any time in a semi-automated process. Those "Question from X" messages here are those said automated questions. Alternatively, the adoption program (I like to call it the "*yells in pain*" because it's abbreviated form is "AUU") is used for more 1-on-1 engagement, intended for long term use. You can see more on the talk page or ask Nick Moyes about it. Panini! 🥪 14:36, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
So you could technically adopt me but Blaze still be my mentor? SkyeWolf369 (talk) 14:37, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Yes, that is the case. Is this an adoption request? Panini! 🥪 14:39, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Mmmm I guess yea. Do you accept? SkyeWolf369 (talk) 14:40, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Oh, I'm now noticing that you were referring to this essay instead of the growth team features, but these will eventually be one in the same. Per your request, while both features one separately I don't see much of a reason for a second mentor to be there; you are already under mentorship by Blaze, who I know is a good editor that handles new users well. You're in good hands with him! He does appear to be on a Wikibreak though, so if you have any questions in the meantime I will be here for answers. Panini! 🥪 14:45, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Orphaned articles without many sources

Hi @Panini!: I have been trying to do-orphan some articles recently and several that I come across don't have many sources. I'm not sure if I should add the information in an orphaned article to one that I'm trying to link to so that adding a link makes sense. For instance, I looked at Ernst Catenhusen and I might be able to put a link to his article in List of University of Göttingen people, but most of the other people in there have a little information about them (e.g. Law — PhD). However, any information I could add about Catenhusen from his article would be unsourced. (Of course ideally sources could be found for all this information, but I don't always have time to check for one). Is it better to add the link and information without a source, to add a link but leave the information out until a source can be found, or not to add a link at all? Perfect4th (talk) 18:47, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Ooh, de-orphaning? Great work so far! In the example you listed, there should be easy sources out there and putting him on the list should be fine. Most of the article is unsourced anyway, so that big tag at the top justifies that they're all source-able and just need sources. In broad terms, citation needed tags encourage verifiability, so adding a citation needed tag is fine. You could also add a see also section, according to Wikipedia:Orphan#Various ways to de-orphan
Since you're going around and doing de-orphan work, you might as well go the extra mile, generally speaking. If you don't have the time to find a source, you could always return to it later to do so. Citation needed tags are used to encourage source-finding, so adding them is alright, but you might as well while you're there to help better the encyclopedia. Small stuff like that is still recognized, after all. Just try to not go around and adding a bunch of citation needed tags in quick succession, because that's considered not helping and is shunned against. Panini! 🥪 21:41, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

I approved the DYK, but made many comments on grammar, as GA is usually a much higher bar. Fixing what I found will be a start, but maybe get a grammar review from Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors? --GRuban (talk) 22:06, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

@GRuban hello, At the time this was my 2nd Good Article Review, I analyzed it carefully and could not find any grammatical errors. I apologize if this review was not as thorough as you would have advised, and if required, can perform a Reassessment. Thank you. PerryPerryD Talk To Me 22:30, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
I would like to mention panini's previous GAN's. as far as i can tell its been a perfect 100% percentage of passed GANS. If i missed something please let me know. PerryPerryD Talk To Me 22:38, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
@GRuban Oh, 1 more thing, you may be thinking of WP:FA? PerryPerryD Talk To Me 22:43, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

No, WP:GACR, first criterion, 1a: "the prose is clear, concise, and understandable to an appropriately broad audience; spelling and grammar are correct". I listed maybe 20 prose and grammar issues in that link. They're fixable. This isn't meant to grill you, or burn Panini. A few of these issues may merely be crumbs - a matter of taste, let's say. But most have meat to them. --GRuban (talk) 23:18, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

... oh i get it, cause panini is already grilled. PerryPerryD Talk To Me 00:55, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

Citation:Simplified

Hey @Panini!: First of all, thanks for your advice on improving Bloons TD 6!

I was wondering if you have some kind of Citation: Simplified tutorial. There are several fields that show up when I click the Cite button, and its all a bit overwhelming. DO you have any advice? Thanks, Splatana (talk) 11:13, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

@Splatana, I sure do. So, all of those templates for citation all do different things; some of them are for citing books, some for old newspapers, among others. Since you're writing about video games, and seemingly recent ones, you'll be primarily using the "{{Cite web}}" template. If you ever plan to write about old video games then you might have to use the "{{Cite book}}" and "{{Cite magazine}}" templates, such as how Super Mario 64 uses a blend of all three. Here's how you format a cite web template, and I'll use this Paper Mario: Color Splash review which is an article I'm currently working on.
The guide

Every cite web citation should have the following: the URL to the page, the name of the source, the first and last name of the writer, the date the source was published, and an "access date" to prove the source is still accessible. When you're in the edit window, there should be a top bar that has a bunch of features on it. Go up there and hit the reference button first (a rectangular book with a bookmark hanging out of it) and then hit the template button (the puzzle piece). You can search for any template here; type in "cite web" and click what shows up. Then, to the left of the popup that should appear, click on all the details I just mentioned. "URL" and "Title" are required and put in automatically, so you'll need to insert "Source Date", "URL access date", "Name of the website", "Last name", and "First name". You don't need to worry about the three other labels under "SUGGESTED PARAMETERS" for now. If you were to hit Insert now (don't do that yet), the empty template would look like this:

<ref>{{Cite web |url= |title= |date= |access-date= |website= |last= |first=}}</ref>

Ignore everything under "OPTIONAL PARAMETERS"; I've been here for two years and only barely the "Language" and "Translated title" parameters, so I doubt you'll need to worry about that stuff for a while. From there, it should be just a simple game of looking around for the details and plopping them into their respective parameters. For reference, I'm using the Color Splash review I mentioned. I'll be giving you any additional details about these parameters as they're filled in. Note that you can also do these in any order.

First, copy and paste the URL. Sometimes reviews and stuff will have multiple pages, so see if there's a way to view all of them at once and copy that URL instead. If not, use the first page URL.

<ref>{{Cite web |url= https://venturebeat.com/2016/10/05/paper-mario-color-splash-is-another-delightful-trip-into-a-bizarre-crafty-world/ |title= |date= |access-date= |website= |last= |first=}}</ref>

Then, you copy and paste the title. If it's in all caps, you're gonna have to retype it to not be, per MOS:ALLCAPS.

<ref>{{Cite web |url= https://venturebeat.com/2016/10/05/paper-mario-color-splash-is-another-delightful-trip-into-a-bizarre-crafty-world/|title= Paper Mario: Color Splash is another delightful trip into a bizarre crafty world}}|date= |access-date= |website= |last= |first=}}</ref>

Now there's the date; sometimes the article writer will update their article and include an "Updated on X" message, so remember to look out for the original publish date.

<ref>{{Cite web |url= https://venturebeat.com/2016/10/05/paper-mario-color-splash-is-another-delightful-trip-into-a-bizarre-crafty-world/|title= Paper Mario: Color Splash is another delightful trip into a bizarre crafty world}}|date= 2016-10-05 |access-date= |website= |last= |first=}}</ref>

The "URL access date" is for the reader to determine if the URL still works. Basically, it means "The user that added this reference could access the article, and last did so on this date". For this date, just put in the current day. It should already be highlighted as a one-click thing.

<ref>{{Cite web |url= https://venturebeat.com/2016/10/05/paper-mario-color-splash-is-another-delightful-trip-into-a-bizarre-crafty-world/|title= Paper Mario: Color Splash is another delightful trip into a bizarre crafty world}}|date= 2016-10-05 |access-date= 2022-03-23 |website= |last= |first=}}</ref>

Now, put in the website name. If it has an article, put two brackets around it, such as Destructoid and don't if it does not, such as Hardcore Gamer. It doesn't matter if it's a redirect or not, like Siliconera.

<ref>{{Cite web |url= https://venturebeat.com/2016/10/05/paper-mario-color-splash-is-another-delightful-trip-into-a-bizarre-crafty-world/|title= Paper Mario: Color Splash is another delightful trip into a bizarre crafty world}}|date= 2016-10-05 |access-date= 2022-03-23 |website= [[Venturebeat]] |last= |first=}}</ref>

Then you have the last and first name, which is organized "Last, First" for professional standards. If a writer has a pseudonym, such as "The Whizz", you don't need to include the name parameters.

<ref>{{Cite web |url= https://venturebeat.com/2016/10/05/paper-mario-color-splash-is-another-delightful-trip-into-a-bizarre-crafty-world/|title= Paper Mario: Color Splash is another delightful trip into a bizarre crafty world}}|date= 2016-10-05 |access-date= 2022-03-23 |website= [[Venturebeat]] |last= Scimeca|first= Dennis}}</ref>

And, boom, there's your source!

  1. ^ Scimeca, Dennis (2016-10-05). "Paper Mario: Color Splash is another delightful trip into a bizarre crafty world". Venturebeat. Retrieved 2022-03-23.

Assistance On a few School Articles

So I was wondering if I could get some assistance on making a few school articles better. Primarily High Schools in Worcester County Public Schools. Let me know if you would be able to help me. SkyeWolf369 (talk) 14:20, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

Sounds interesting, but I've currently have three different projects on my list right now that I'm currently juggling. Well, it's more like throwing one ball up at a time and holding the other two close to my chest so I don't drop them. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Schools seems to be active, so try leaving a message there and see if you get any bites. Panini! 🥪 14:27, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

@SkyeWolf369, you can go to the WikiProject's talk page (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Schools), and select New section in the top right corner. Then, it's a simple as asking if anyone is interested in helping with your project. Panini! 🥪 14:46, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
@Panini! Is there anyway I could end up getting someone to assess an article for me? If so please let me know how. SkyTheWolf (Talk) 13:09, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
@SkyWolf369, technically, you can assess an article yourself in a pinch, but getting another user to is preferred. If you'd like, I can do the assessing; what article are you referring to? Panini! 🥪 13:33, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
@Panini! Pocomoke City I assessed it myself but if you can reassess it that would be very helpful. SkyTheWolf (Talk) 13:35, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
@Panini! Could you also assist me in assessing the high schools that I contacted you about before? The ones in Worcester County Public Schools. SkyTheWolf (Talk) 13:38, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
The articles that Worcester County are at start levels, sans the stub level that Worcester Technical High School (Maryland) is currently at. They fall short of comprehensiveness and lack citation, and most citations that are present are duplicates, poorly format, or poor choice in general. Panini! 🥪 13:45, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
@Panini! Do you have any tips on what to do then? SkyTheWolf (Talk) 13:47, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
@SkyWolf369, school articles aren't my forte, so while I can't give you specific advice, there's luckily this page, which documents how to write a good article about a school. If you have any questions from there, I can guide you from there! Panini! 🥪 13:57, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
Any tips on the one for Pocomoke City? SkyTheWolf (Talk) 14:00, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
To begin, I believe your main issue is to find sources for the content that doesn't have one. I assume this content wasn't just made up, so it should be a simple look to find where the claims came from. You could also take the sources currently present, read through them, and include content that was previously left out. I see this happen often, so you're bound to find more nuggets of information within them to get started. Panini! 🥪 14:05, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

Moving page

Hi again, @Panini!: I have just tried to move a page, Danielle McKinney, because it was not originally capitalized correctly. I figured I'd better run it past someone else, since it's my first one and I don't know if I did all the after-move cleanup correctly (note that article is currently an orphan). I seemed to be prompted to check if it moved correctly on Meta, or something to that effect, but it was still listed under the old capitalization there and I'm not sure if I need to fix that. Perfect4th (talk) 14:36, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

It seemed to have worked the old page properly redirects and everything looks good. I think it should be good. SkyTheWolf (Talk) 14:43, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
Hey, @Perfect4th, everything here looks good. You could also do a checklist look of WP:POSTMOVE to see if anything there applies, but due to its orphan stance there is probably little that needs to be changed on a large scale. Panini! 🥪 14:53, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

Creating joke deletion nom in appropriate page

Hey Panini! I saw you gave a user advice on how to create a joke AFD nom (provided it's appropriate). I've tried reading through the steps, however I can't seem to figure out how to do it properly since the 2nd step which create the "nomination" relies on the user adding the AFD template to the page being deleted, which you shouldn't do for joke nominations. Would you mind helping me? ― Wolf BlazeAwooBlaze Wolf#6545 14:25, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

@Blaze Wolf, follow step two as usual, but when you publish, immediately remove the "{{REMOVE THIS TEMPLATE WHEN CLOSING THIS AfD}}" template so the bot doesn't transclude it into the mainspace. Panini! 🚢 14:41, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
That's the part that confuses me. I don't understand how to create the page as the ways to do so in step 2 require you to add the AFD template to the page. ― Wolf BlazeAwooBlaze Wolf#6545 15:26, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

Panini, Thank you for your great assistance on the wikipedia project. You have been an incredible editor, and a great trainer. I really appriciate your kindness, understanding, and willingness to help. I am greatful for your GA Reviews and advice. Thank you. I have decided to take a break on GA Reviewing until I am further experienced, as advised by ferret. once again, Thank you. PerryPerryD Talk To Me 14:24, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

@PerryPerryD, of course. Helping newcomers achieve greatness is important to me because I was once a newcomer too. I'm approaching my second year on this site and have written many articles, so it's easy for me to breeze through them. For newcomers, it's best to take things slow and really work through the process so you can get the core understanding on what needs to be done. Like ferret said, focus on the mainspace first, then after you've gotten the grasp on the ropes (usually users branch out after they've gotten bored of nonstop content writing) you can take steps into other background fields. You might find that when you fully understand how to make a good article you can expertly review one, too.
As per what to do in the meantime, my advice would be to pick an article and start cracking away at it. Take each part of the article and work on it one step at a time and learn the policies and effective skills as you go along. For me, I worked on Super Mario Bros. 35; I took about three months to get the article from this to this. Certainly not my best work in the slightest, but it gave me all the knowledge I know now to move on to other projects and I became a better writer with time. Over four months I brought Paper Mario: The Origami King to FA from this, and within five months wrote Paper Mario and brought that to FA too. They all took time, but things took less and less as time and experience went on.
But that's my spiel. Tomodachi Life could work as this first article though it may to too long and of high importance. It depends on what article "calls" you. Panini! 🥪 14:52, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

Hello, @Barok22! By "assist my business location-based", do you mean to add information about your business to the Kalagunan article? If so, I strongly advise against doing so. If this is your business you are interested in writing about, it might fail WP:PROMO, meaning that Wikipedia is not to be used for advertising reasons. If this is your only intention as well, you must also declare a conflict of interest; more details can be found at WP:COI. If I've misinterpreted your question, please let me know. Hey Panini, long time no see. I see you have been keeping incredibly busy on Wikipedia, something I have been neglecting to do for the better half of a year. However, if you are not too busy atm, I come asking for advice. I have currently set up a peer review page for Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash as can be seen here. I created it in hopes of nominating the article for FA status. I was hoping you can give my advice for this process, as I know you are much more experienced at this than I am. All the best! (P.S. Welcome back, @Captain Galaxy! it looks like you've done everything right, so now all that's left is patience. Peer review is the slowest of the processes, and it may take about a month to get an adequate amount of eyes. To help moves things along, you could review some other ones open and request a QPQ. I would also request this article to be copyedited at WP:GOCE; I see some tensing issues among others and it could use a refreshing. Panini! 🥪 16:16, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

You suggested doing a quid pro quo when I originally asked you about peer review – if I do, what kind of things should I comment on/look for when reviewing other articles, and should/is it okay if I do more than one? Perfect4th (talk) 17:03, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

@Perfect4th, peer review is a pretty slow process so it may take a while before you get an adequate amount of reviews and comments (it may be worthwhile to work on other content in the meantime). You could reach out to respective WikiProjects, or you can personally request a review from some other editors who frequent themselves on soccer.
When you go to review other articles, some things you can do include:
  • Looking for spelling, grammar, or WP:MOS mistakes
  • Point out things that may be confusing to you or in general; it's important for an article to appeal to any audience and isn't too technical or complicated to understand
  • Check some of the sources, and see if they adequately cite the claim they apply to or are independent and reliable
Most people do peer reviews for GA or FA preparations, so the stuff to be looking out for is similar to the GACs or FACs themselves. And, per "is it okay if I do more than one", yes. Absolutely. A lot of people just like you have been waiting for reviews for a long time! Panini! 🥪 17:18, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
Thank you very much! I will look into doing that. Perfect4th (talk) 18:02, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Year of Luigi

On 15 April 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Year of Luigi, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that during the Year of Luigi, Nintendo released a mockumentary depicting Luigi as a "legend of parkour"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Year of Luigi. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Year of Luigi), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Closing a merge discussion

Panini!, I read through WP:MERGECLOSE and WP:PROMERGE to try to figure out what I should do. The merger proposal has run for six days, and two other people have voted to merge. Is that enough votes to close within a week? Should I be the one to close it, or should I let someone else? The instructions seem a bit confusing to me. (Also, congrats on your GA!) Perfect4th (talk) 18:05, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Good question. Technically, a proposal could close with one vote if properly justified; a proposal where both sides have due reasons should be discussed, but ones that are unanimous (and obvious, like yours) can be closed. Per MERGECLOSE, as long as its not a controversial discussion you can close it yourself. You can close the nomination as merge and follow the instructions. Panini! 🥪 18:18, 25 April 2022 (UTC)
I've just finished the merge. I had to change the template for the player's team, because it's used on the articles of his teammates, but that doesn't seem to be reflected in the "What Links Here" link yet. Will that happen automatically, and does the rest of it look okay?

Asking for reassurance

Hi, I wanted to ask you something regarding an article I am working on. Recently I have been working on a large revision of the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary article to get it to GA and maybe even FA. I have been using the Capcom Five as a good reference. I have also used the Year of Luigi article as a basis, which you had recently worked on and got to GA (Amazing work btw). Flattery aside, I wanted to make sure it was ok to use the article as a reference in improving the other article, as I've been feeling a bit weird about drawing influence from it. Sorry if this was a weird question to ask and have a good day! CaptainGalaxy 20:53, 25 April 2022 (UTC)

Sure, it's a free country after all. Technically this GA kind of went through untread waters as no other articles are similar to this one (as in, aren't GA), so in a way this is all ya got. Panini! 🥪 02:33, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 May newsletter

The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  1. New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
  2. Christmas Island AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
  3. Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
  4. Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
  5. Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
  6. United States Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
  7. England Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.

The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Wandering thought/question

Hi again, Panini!, and congratulations on your impressive WikiCup work! That's a lot of GA/FA work. Anyway, I've answered several questions at the Teahouse and welcomed/talked with newcomers about various policies and edits and I was wondering what you would think if I became a mentor in the future? I don't know if I need more experience still, but I do enjoy helping newcomers get on their feet a bit better and I'm learning where to find the answers I don't know.
Entirely unrelated side note: I stole one of your talk page banners, World Cup-ified it, and learned how to make a template and it worked! Now if only I could figure out how to get the center = y parameter to work... Perfect4th (talk) 23:49, 3 May 2022 (UTC)

I certainly see you becoming a future mentor. It's a matter of personal commitment, really; once you truly feel that you grown to be able to help others (or in some cases, know how to find the answers and then help others) you have officially surpassed the newcomer level. I personally, think you have passed such standard, but it's up to you in the end. If you're ready to graduate, let me know, and I can also equip you with some other mentorship info and features. Panini! 🥪 13:38, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

hello, Panini!! i hope your travels are going well. i just wanted to let you know that, since you are currently busy, i have taken the liberty of lengthening this blurb for this article so that it conforms with the minimum character limit for tfa blurbs. (a blurb's length should be between 925 and 1025 characters, with 975 being the target, so i have bumped this blurb's length up to 971.) the sentence i added covers the game's puzzles, comedy, and card-based combat, since those aspects of the game were repeatedly discussed in the article body, but do not appear to have been addressed in the previous version of the blurb. if you disagree with my edit, please feel free to revert my additions and add what you think is appropriate instead. thanks, Panini!. dying (talk) 05:30, 10 July 2022 (UTC)

This is the part where I try to lure reviewers in by talking about its importance and interesting aspects, but not only are there little positives to say about it, I have never played this game. If you were to ask, "If you have never played this game, why did you work on its article" I would probably respond with, "I don't know"."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:24, 17 July 2022 (UTC)

Question from Peace boy realler on Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not (01:23, 14 August 2022)

How to add my biography history ? --Peace boy realler (talk) 01:23, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) hi @Peace boy realler! short answer: you don't. long answer: making autobiographies are heavily discouraged as these tend to be not neutral (which is required), often have information that is not verifiable (also required), and other various problems and difficulties on top of the difficulty in making an article in the first place. if there already is an article about yourself that already exists, you can add edit requests to the talk page so others can see if what you want to add can be added in. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 02:26, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

Question from Usualtalk (05:32, 14 August 2022)

Hi, Mentor -- I've occasionally tinkered with the article on radio host Jean Shepherd, adding brief information on where the film "A Christmas Story" was filmed (at the Christmas Story House in Cleveland, of course!). A few years ago, Doniago took exception to my attempted changes, reverted them. And just now, Cmr08 did the same to my latest changes. His objection was to an external link I included -- which I thought was needed as citation. And he also said "it reads like an advertisement" though I'm not sure that referred to (the link was to info about what I'd mentioned, which I thought was required!). I'd like to better understand Doniago's and Cmr08's points but Doniago hasn't answered questions I've asked. I looked at WP:EL and see there are rules for external links. I'd appreciate your looking at the page's history and his comments and suggest an approach. If it's this tough getting a change this small past "supervision", it's hard to imagine successfully creating an article from scratch. It would be helpful if editors like Doniago and Cmr08 provided English suggestions, along with linking long Wikipedia rules pages. Thanks. --Usualtalk (talk) 05:32, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

I've looked through the situation now, @Usualtalk (and apologies for the wait! It's a long explanation but I should now get your questions within the day you ask them). For one, the source you have added has been incorrectly added to the article; you added an external link, which involves putting brackets around the link and then adding a title on top of it. External links have a different purpose, which is being used to link to external sites, usually for further info. See Paper Mario: The Origami King and scroll down to the section called "external links", where you can see an example of this. Instead of this, you would want to use our "cite web" template, and to learn how to incorporate one, see here. Make sure to take it step-by-step!
As for your addition, his statement "it reads like an advertisement" is pretty vague, so I will assume he is referring to both your wording choice and the source you chose, just to be safe. As for your choice of words, listing that the museum "offers" "tours with gift shop offering memorabilia and collectibles" sounds like it is trying to sell you on going there. There isn't an exact science to it, but in this case I would say it comes from your use of "offering" and a description of what is there. I would rephrase this to say "It was filmed at a house in Cleveland (side note: which Cleveland?), which was later repurposed into a tourist attraction. As for your source choice, the goal is to find reliable, third-party sources that descriptively talk about the subject without bias (see more here). This source, for example, is from This is Cleveland, which is affiliated with the house (as a tourist attraction) and the website's goal is to try and sell you on going there. Looking a tiny bit further this website is funded by other attractions (see the About section on their site), which therefore means its not the best source choice to fit the aforementioned criteria. After a quick look I think this source could do the trick.
I hope this helps! If you have any questions about the concepts or policies I threw around you can always leave me more messages. Panini! 🥪 16:32, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! That's exactly what I needed -- I'd really like to stay within boundaries/guidelines and it's been tough doing that when just receiving "That's bad" feedback without the sort of suggestions you provided. When I manage to make this one-sentence change stick, I'll proceed to creating a short article, after absorbing your points. I've been a technology writer for quite a while; Wikitalk is learning a new language style. Usualtalk (talk) 18:56, 27 October 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 September newsletter

The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

At this stage, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For the remaining competitors, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and importantly, before the deadline on October 31st!

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Would you consider adopting me to help me run a subtask?

. Video gaming has a component in interactive fiction and narrative gaming, which is all part of digital literature--a very under reported subject. I am starting a new project to edit women electronic writer information in wikipedia and wikidata. I just retired July 30 of this year, so I have not had much time. So far, we have a category electronic literature and a subtask (WP:WELW) and about 15 people who are interested in being editors with this subtask. "Yeah, I know. I bit off a LOT! I have been working with RosieStep, and some others as well! But as a complete newbie myself (200 edits in the last month), I really need someone in my corner to ask the stupid questions, etc. as I jumped off the diving board and I don't really know how to swim. At the very least, I would love to get your insights and experiences as we step up to the plate. What issues have you run into when corralling newbies to identify and update wikidata and wikipedia? I thought we would start with images as that is fun--any advice for our first meeting Sept 15, 2022?

Thank you! Deena Larsen, aka LoveElectronicLiterature. Full disclosure: I am a hypertext/elit writer from the 1990s and I love this field and I have wanted to do this for YEARS.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_writers/Women_electronic_literature_writers LoveElectronicLiterature (talk) 19:09, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

Hello, @LoveElectronicLiterature! I've taken some time to look into the stuff you are working on and it is quite intriguing to say the least. While I love to help out newcomers and especially take up some people to adopt, now may not be the best time for me to adopt you, especially considering your plans. I've taken up some other IRL hobbies over the summer and recently they have become quite time-demanding, so I expect my activity levels to be very low for the next couple of months. You can always stop by and ask me any small questions you might have, but I looked around for available adopters and I found that the user Vacant0 is a good match. They're currently active, and are both interested in tech and have written a fair share of good articles about living people (WP:BLPs). They should have the experience to answer the questions you might have!
I hate to send you off but at the very least I can answer the questions you have asked me. For the first question, the most similar experience I've had to the one you are having is gathering responses for a survey I conducted for Wikiproject Video games a little while back. I would say the only issues I had was getting traction; as in, some people weren't quick to respond to my question so I had to sell some people on the idea and why their responses would be beneficial. You have to have some reasoning behind starting a new Wikiproject subtask or else it might be slowly abandoned by the people you requested to join in on it. Why is it so important? Why should they dedicate their editing time to it? I doubt it shouldn't be too hard, considering that Women in Red, for example, is one of our most active Wikiprojects.
As for the second question, it looks like fun! I would say to just come up with a game plan. Do you aim to clear a backlog, such as find images for every person that doesn't have one for their infobox? Or do a more relaxed, "populate the articles with pictures" kind of venture? Either one shouldn't be too hard as long as you adhere to the image policies (they can get really picky, so really emphasize those rules). Panini! 🥪 16:11, 7 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks so much, and have fun with IRL hobbies! I think the images are going to be more--pick iconic images that showcase what electronic literature/IF/games can do. I aim to just do what we can and then if we get enough traction, get a real goal of adding the 400 women writers we have identified into wikidata and get their info. Then see who would be notable per wikipedia criteria and get folks to draft articles... later. Was the survey you did to get information or participation as editors?
thanks! LoveElectronicLiterature (talk) 20:59, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

How can I become "Extended User"?

Hello, mentor! I'd like to contribute to the wiki by translating pages into my mother tongue, but they require that I be an "Extended User" in order to publish that translation, so I'd like to ask you about that and how I can become one. The World is my goal (talk) 13:39, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

Good morning, @The World is my goal! You may need some patience for this one; extended-confirmed permissions (WP:XC for more info) is an automated process, and to achieve the status you need to make 500 edits and have an existing account for 30 days. There are some other small benefits that come with it that are to be given to trustworthy users, hence the big criteria.
In the meantime, I recommend seeing if you can fix some translation issues on already existing articles, or see if an article about your native language on the English Wikipedia interests you that you can also help improve. Be careful as well not to make random, speedy edits just to hit the criteria as well- this is usually frowned on by Wikipedians and it could get you in trouble. Hope this helps! Hey, mentor! Someone is trying to undo my edits every time I try to edit something following your advice. What should I do? --The World is my goal (talk) 13:13, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

Hmm, it might be because some of your edits were improperly formatted. WikiCup 2022 November newsletter

The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is

  • England Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
  • New York City Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
  • Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
  • Chicago PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
  • Toronto Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.

During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.

  • England Lee Vilenski wins the featured article prize, for a total of 6 FAs during the course of the competition and 3 in the final round.
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh wins the featured list prize, for 3 FLs in round 2.
  • Adam Cuerden wins the featured picture prize, for 39 FPs during the competition.
  • Toronto Z1720 wins the featured article reviewer prize, for 35 FARs in round 4.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius wins the good article prize, for 32 GAs in round 1.
  • SounderBruce wins the featured topic prize, for 4 FT articles in round 1.
  • England Lee Vilenski wins the good topic prize, for 34 GT articles in round 5.
  • Sammi Brie wins the good article reviewer prize, for 71 GARs overall.
  • Sammi Brie wins the Did you know prize, for 30 DYKs in round 3 and 106 overall.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 wins the In the news prize, for 106 ITNs in round 5 and 289 overall.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January and possible changes to the rules and scoring are being discussed on the discussion page. You are invited to sign up to take part in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to have a good turnout for the 2023 competition.
