Thank you for adopting me!

Okay, now that that's out of the way, question one: how do I find an article to edit!? So, I can find an article, but usually what they have to fix is Way out of my reach! --Bumpf said this! ooh clicky clicky! [insert witty meta-text on wiki-sigs here] 17:11, 20 November 2021 (UTC)

Hey, Bumpf, sorry for not replying sooner, I have some relatives over at the moment. No matter the editor, everything is in reach; we have a rule called WP:BOLD, that states that any editor can make any size of change. Wikipedia is welcoming to all new contributors. After all, how would we grow? If you're referring to something else, please let me know. You might be referring to something that seems physically impossible to understand the ropes of. ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:53, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Question from AmyLewis101 (10:02, 13 December 2021)

How do I start an article for an author? --AmyLewis101 (talk) 10:02, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

Hello there, AmyLewis101! Creating an article from scratch might be complicated for newcomers, so experienced users highly recommend some content creation before taking a swing at it. It seems like you've already created an article and it was declined for not meeting our notability guidelines. Basically, the sources currently in the article are related or closely related to the subject; references or sources that were written by the author or people involved, such as interviews. This goes against the primary source policy and needs more content unrelated to the subject, documented here for guidance. Panini!🥪 12:32, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

Thoughts on SpaceX Starship

Hello! You probably remembered me on WP:DISCORD, but if you don't, it is the guy who is begging comments and feedback on an article :) Anyways, I am currently polishing up the article in preparation for WP:FAC, and I want to know whether the article is "good enough" in others eyes. What do you think? CactiStaccingCrane (talk) 06:22, 21 December 2021 (UTC)

CactiStaccingCrane, sorry I ignored this! I've been out of town and forgot to bring my stuff with me, but now that I'm back home I'll be in the swing again.

Since I'm no tech genius, space technology is not really my "field", but I can still give some general tips. It seems like your last nomination was closed due to sourcing issues. One way to check if sourcing matches the prose it to do some spotchecking. Here's the rundown:

  • Pick any of the sources at random and look into it.
  • If the source explicitly backs the prose in the article, then it's good. If not, find a new one. If none exist, remove the claim altogether if the article won't lose too much without it.
  • Repeat these steps about 10 to 20 times (I know, yawn, but its worth it for quality). If more than two-thirds of the sources pass this test, then references should overall be okay. If not, repeat the process.

Hope this helps at all. Panini!🥪 15:46, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for your advice! (New) spaceflight stuff is notoriously badly sourced with a lot of assumption added, so the spotchecking would be extremely helpful. I just gonna verify all of them instead, because I'm a mad men :) CactiStaccingCrane (talk) 15:49, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
CactiStaccingCrane, even better, so I won't stop you. Panini!🥪 15:54, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

Question from Juan de Castañeda (02:13, 20 January 2022)

Hello, Panni I have a question. If I edited a Wikipedia page without an account will my IP still be viewable though I created an account? --Juan de Castañeda (talk) 02:13, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

Good question, Juan de Castañeda! One of the advantages to logging in is having your IP address hidden to the general public, so don't worry if you're concerned about privacy. However, a very small list of users (roughly 50) have CheckUser permissions; these people have the ability to see every IP address you've edited under. If this sounds scary, just know this is only used for users that abuse IP ranges for vandalism. They are also not, at any circumstances, allowed to share this information with others. We value privacy! Panini!🥪 12:52, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

Question from Sosinsights (09:21, 13 February 2022)

Hi @Panini!:: how I can fix Orphan articles? --Sosinsights (talk) 09:21, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Hey there, Sosinsights! When an article is an orphan, it means there are no other articles on Wikipedia that link to it. Here's how you can you help:
  1. In the search bar, type the exact name of the article.
  2. Instead of clicking on the article's name when it appears, click on the "Search for pages containing" link below it. This will bring you to every article that matches the orphan's article name.
  3. Simply go to those articles, click edit, and link them! You can do so by adding two brackets around the article's name ([[example]])
If there are no articles that mention this article's name at all, click here for further steps. Let me know if you have any further questions about this. Panini!🥪 16:59, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Mentor program

So far, a dozen mentees. I have placed a welcome on their Talk pages. No contacts from any yet. Most have done no editing to date. One is attampting an autobiography. Another is clearly a sockpuppet, so I initiated a SPI and left a note on the account's Talk page, notifying. David notMD (talk) 17:30, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

FYI, "tfw" means "That feeling when..." as in someone is talking or writing about an emotional response/reaction, and says something like "That feeling when you spill your coffee on your laptop." David notMD (talk) 17:35, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
David notMD, you don't need to reach out to every mentee if it's choking up your time. About the editors that made no edits; some people make an account and simply just don't edit, such as how I have about two dozen editors who created accounts two weeks back only to do nothing else... Maybe they changed their minds? Since we users don't welcome new editors until they've made at least one edit, you aren't required to either. In fact, the Dashboard is going to be shortly updated to not show users that are blocked or have zero edits (see Wikipedia talk:Growth Team features#Why show blocked and zero-edit mentees? In short, the mentees are the ones that make the first interaction, so luckily you don't need to spend time saying hello to every user. Alternatively, if you feel you should say hi to all new accounts, by all means go for it. Panini!🥪 17:42, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
I likely will default to not welcoming unless accounts become active. David notMD (talk) 19:11, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

Question from Bstenzel2351 on User:Bstenzel2351/sandbox (14:52, 18 February 2022)

How do I make my article in the sandbox a live article on Wikipedia for everyone? --Bstenzel2351 (talk) 14:52, 18 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Bstenzel2351! Thank you for creating this article. To start, I've converted your sandbox content over to a draft, located at Draft:EPIC Event Center. Your sandbox still exists, and you can find it here. When you are done with the draft, insert {{subst:submit}} onto the top of the article, and eventually, one of our dandy reviewers will come in and approve it. However, before you submit, there are a couple of things you can do to improve its chances of being accepted and published into our mainspace:
  1. Your article will need some more citations: the references you currently have are primary ones, meaning that they were made by or contributed to by the EPIC Event Center themselves. To prove that the article is notable enough for inclusion, your draft will need reliable, unrelated sources that prove that they're important outside of their primary circle. Based on the list of performers here, I definitely think this could be notable and it shouldn't be too hard to find more sources out there.
  2. Your article seems to not be written neutrally: this means, the article doesn't read from a neutral point of view and some of the statements here need to be readjusted to sound less advertise-y. For example, this line: "The result? Your live experience will feel up-close and personal, despite the massive, 45’ x 35’x 4’ stage."
I hope these details (and links, be sure to read em') help you understand the process better. Let me know by replying if you have any further questions! Panini!🥪 15:44, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
I've noticed, Bstenzel2351, that your draft was declined. Don't be discouraged! It seems like it only failed to meet the neutral point of view standards as I've noted above, so I bet if we put in a little bit more work we can get this article published today. The green statement I listed above wasn't the only one, and I've used it as an example. I've done some work to make things read more neutrally, but here are some things to fix that I wasn't too sure what you were implying:
  • "to benefit his northeast Wisconsin neighbors" - I'm not too sure what this refers to. If it's specific people or locations, I'd list some examples.
  • "Adjacent to Green Bay’s legendary stadium district" - Is this in reference to a specific stadium? If so, it would be better to explicitly state its name, with a link to its article.
  • "Some of the industry’s biggest names weighed in on the design for the EPIC Event Center" - Interesting fact, but what people does this include? I'd specify if it's mentioned in any of your sources, using a "such as".
Outside of these, I've taken care of some other issues for you. Panini!🥪 18:09, 18 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi Panini, I have been trying to submit an article regarding Hayotel. Unfortunately, it has been declined every time I have tried submitting it. Please guide as to what I can do to get it published. Thanks --Telecomwizard (talk) 15:22, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Telecomwizard! Your article appears to be declined because it does not meet our "WP:CORPDEPTH" guidelines, which is our notability guidelines for organizations and companies. According to this policy, the sources you currently have in this article only breifly mention the subject of your article, and to prove its important enough to publish, you must find some sources that cover this company thouroghly and in depth. The two sources that come from the Hayotel website are also primary, meaning that they can be used but don't prove that the subject is notable because it was published by the source directly. If this is confusing, please let me know and I'll clarify for you. Panini!🥪 12:08, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Adoption

Hi, I'm Perfect4th. I saw you listed as an adopter considering adoptees and I was wondering if you are still open to guiding another user? I'm starting to understand a little bit more about Wikipedia but I still have some questions. Perfect4th (talk) 23:58, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Indeed I am, Perfect4th; I've placed a userbox on your user page. Please stop by and leave me any questions you might have! In the off-chance where I'm unavailable (usually I'll get around to answering within minutes, if not a day or so), you can also continue to ask questions at the Teahouse if it's urgent. Another tool I also recommend is the "Newcomer Homepage", a tool that will be soon given to all users (more info here). You can turn this on by going to your Preferences, scrolling all the way down on the "User Page" tab, and selecting the "Display newcomer homepage" checkbox. Panini! 🥪 12:54, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much! I've turned on the newcomer homepage, and it includes a "mentor" section with another editor. Does that differ much from the adoption program/do I need to do anything about that part? Perfect4th (talk) 16:22, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Perfect4th, that mentor is more of an optional thing; basically, new users are assigned a "mentor", and they can ask them questions if they ever get stuck. It's less of a personal thing and serves a purpose similar to the Teahouse. The adoption program is rather for long-term, personal interaction. Panini! 🥪 17:12, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Article Rating question

So I've been doing some copyediting on a few football-related articles, one of which is Mario Gómez. It's currently rated C class. I believe I've seen that articles are individually promoted classes up to B class. I've checked over the B class criteria and I think the article meets them, but I'm not sure. Would you be able to check if the article is ready for B class? Perfect4th (talk) 18:38, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

I've taken a look, Perfect4th, and it checks out! I've reassessed it as B class. While it's preferred for an unrelated user to assess an article, you also have the ability to do it yourself; just be honest!
If you're interested, there is some larger-scale work you can do with an article: you can get the article peer reviewed, where interested editors will review and comment on the article's state on how to improve it; you can bring the article to good article status, which is a pretty high honor for an article, although it will be scrutinized and I suggest doing the peer review path first. Of course, if you're interested in grammar fixes and copyediting, by all means, keep going! Just something to think about as you grow... Panini! 🥪
(Trying a ping for the first time: Panini!) Thank you! I do hope to eventually get Manuel Neuer to GA, but I'm pretty sure neither I nor the article are ready for that yet, so I'd like to get a little more experience first, especially since I'm not sure what further steps are needed on it. I will check into the peer reviewing, thanks! Perfect4th (talk) 18:59, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
I have reassessed Wataru Endo as Start class. Does that look correct? Perfect4th (talk) 02:53, 27 February 2022 (UTC)
@Perfect4th, I've taken a look, and Start Class seems adequate. He appears to be notable, but the article currently could use better referencing. Panini! 🥪 17:29, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

Question from Bstenzel2351 (18:49, 2 March 2022)

Hi Panini, wondering if the draft for Epic Event Center has been approved or is it still declined? --Bstenzel2351 (talk) 18:49, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Welcome back, Bstenzel2351! Currently, your draft is still declined, but this is only because it hasn't been resubmitted. You can do so by adding the same {{subst:submit}} template at the top of it. I've done some work to clean up some phrases that sounded promotional, but some things might still be outstanding, so I'd suggest you take a second look before doing so. It seems like there aren't any concerns about the sourcing, but some expansion could be nice as well. Panini! 🥪 21:56, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
I have another question. I had a picture deleted. It was a picture that I personally took. Why would this be deleted? Bstenzel2351 (talk) 21:21, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
If it was deleted even though you took the image yourself, there probably was some other reason why it was deleted. I can't seem to find the image that you are referring to, so the best I can do is direct your towards our image use policy, and you may discover another violation you weren't aware of. Panini! 🥪 23:26, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

The article Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. The Video Game Barnstar Award

The Video Game Barnstar
As a video game developer, I am proud of your frequent and great contributions to WIkiProject Video Games. As such, I give you the Video Game Barnstar award. (I'm shocked you didn't earn this from your paper mario work)PerryPerryD (talk) 01:33, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

PerryPerryD (talk) 01:31, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Thank you, PerryPerryD, and double thank you for the review! I've received a couple thank you's for my general video game work, but I did get one from the original creator of the Paper Mario series article. They last edited two years ago before I reached out to them, and it made the paragraph they wrote to me additionally nice and rewarding. Panini! 🥪 01:46, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
  • Christmas Island AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
  • Philadelphia GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
  • SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
  • United Nations Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.

These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Peer Review

I've looked through PR and I'm considering trying to nominate Mario Gómez for one – do you think that would be a good idea? If I do, is there anything I should be doing while it's being peer reviewed (similarly to how GA nominators respond to comments from the reviewer)?

By the way, it took me a long time to find a description of what Peer Review is – would it be good to put a description further up on the Main page of the project? All I could find in that section was suggestions for feedback, and the only description I saw that explained PR was in the Instructions tab. Perfect4th (talk) 19:04, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

@Perfect4th, if you feel you've done all you can to improve the article, go for it! One thing I would suggest, however, is to find sources (or, in some cases, better ones) for those small "Citation needed" and "non-primary source needed" tags. Using the find tool, there appears to only be three.
Unlike GA reviews, peer reviews take things much more lightly; everything you're given is only suggestions for improvement, and it isn't required for you to respond to the comments. However, take for example this old peer review of mine (this was back when I first joined Wikipedia as well, so you may see how I'm slightly more cautious and confused than I am now). Here I've checked off everything I've completed so I personally could see what was left that I didn't do. I also responded to the reviewers about any further questions I had.
One thing I do suggest, however, is reviewing other articles that are currently open for peer review as well. Your peer review might be slow to get comments, so by reviewing others, you can suggest a quid pro quo and you may get a review in return. You can also request reviews directly from other editors on talk pages or on certain Wikiprojects that apply. If you are to do this, however, I'd limit how many people you reach out to, and try to find editors that are active on the subject you're working on.
And, per your confusion on what the peer review did, I better clarified the opening paragraph. Let me know if you have any further questions! And, as always, try not to rush through it. That article I mentioned above took seven months to go from poor quality to being on the front page. Trust me, though, the feeling is worth it. Panini! 🥪 14:06, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
Okay, I've fixed two of the tags and I'm trying to find a source for the third. I may check a few more claims for neutrality before I open the peer review. Thank you very much for your help! Perfect4th (talk) 16:40, 9 March 2022 (UTC)

Question from Utkarsh555 (10:19, 19 March 2022)

@Panini! The french article of High Commission of Pakistan, New Delhi is not being added into the "other wikipedia's languages list". please take a note for it, and merge/add it's data. --Utkarsh555 10:19, 19 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello, @Utkarsh555! Apologies for the late response; usually I respond faster than this! I've tried to figure out the solution to this issue, but either there's a glitch or I'm simply not doing it correctly. If you don't mind, I'd like to redirect you to the WP:Teahouse for this question, where users more experienced in this field may be able to solve this problem. Apologies for the delay once again. Panini! 🥪 05:46, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
@Panini! No, no, It's complete fine. apologies are not needed that way. But thank you, and of course yes, that you can redirect this issue to WP:Teahouse! I'll be glad if you could do that!
Utkarsh555 05:59, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
@Utkarsh555 I was implying that you should ask this same question over at the Teahouse yourself, but that's alright, I should have clarified. I went to the WP:Help Desk (because it'd be kind of embarrassing for a Teahouse host to ask a question at the Teahouse, the Help Desk is a "more experienced" alternative) and I've covered the matter for you. It's fairly simple, so I'm technically an expert now, so if you have any future queries about a similar issue I'll take care of it. Alternatively, here's a help page on the subject if you're curious on how to do it yourself. Panini! 🥪 08:21, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
@Panini! I am sorry that i embarrassed you. I am really very sorry. I am kind of new to go "even related to" Wikipedia sites, so it si [i think] bound to happen. But thanks for that! And again, Pardon me.😬
