New huggle 3.1 is going to be released soon
Hi NickW557, we are to release a new major version of huggle, but we did receive almost no feedback from our beta testing team, which you are a part of (see https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Members). It would be of a great help if you could download it (if you have windows, all you need to do is getting http://tools.wmflabs.org/huggle/files/huggle3.1.0beta.exe and putting it to a folder where you have installed huggle) and test it. You can always get a help with making it @ #huggle connect!
Major changes:
- Multisite support - you can now log in to unlimited number of wikis in 1 huggle session and get a huge queue of all edits made to these wikis. This is good for smaller projects which gets overlooked often.
- Ranged diffs - you can select multiple revisions and get a huge diff that display all changes done to them.
- Fixes of most of bug reports we had so far
In case you found a bug, please report it to bugzilla: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/buglist.cgi?product=Huggle&list_id=147663 thank you! Petrb (talk) 10:12, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Huggle message
Hey NickW557! You are receiving this message because you are subscribed at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Members#Beta_testers
I have recently launched a new downloads for beta testers that contains nightly builds of huggle, eg. versions that are built every day from our master branch and contains latest huggle. These builds are currently provided only for Windows and Ubuntu. You can find them here: http://huggle.wmflabs.org/builds/
Please keep in mind that these don't have any automatic updates and if you download and start using nightly build, you will need to update it yourself! So don't get yourself to running old version, it's possible to install both stable and nightly huggle, which is what I suggest.
Keep the bug reports coming to phabricator: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/create/?projects=Huggle Many thanks! Petrb (talk) 10:00, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi Nick, with regards to my edit on the Home Office page, please see the link to other pages with regards to the sacking of a medical professional 'David Nutt' who was sacked as an advisor to the Home Office for telling them that they were wrong on drug policy, he is a medical professional and probably knows a lot more than a suit in the home office about what should and shouldn't be illegal.
"In 2007 Nutt published a controversial study on the harms of drug use in The Lancet.[12] Eventually, this led to his sacking from his position in the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD); see government positions below. Subsequently, Nutt and a number of his colleagues who had subsequently resigned from the ACMD founded the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs.[13]"

My recent edit on the Popcorn page
G'Day Nick,
Just sending you a message enquiring about your recent message to me about by edit on the Popcorn page being vandalism.
I was just informing the public that popcorn can be very enjoyable as found by the founder on popcorn being myself.
If you wouldn't mind, could you please put my edit back up.
Thanks,

Looks like the guy who has vandalized Chip Coffey repeatedly is claiming here that there is libellous material on the page. How do we stop him from this sort of activity? I'm just getting my feet wet in the anti-vandalism community; hence the question. wia (talk) 23:45, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Bloody Sunday Objections and President Johnson
Nick
There is a pretty clear effort here to re-write history. For 50 years, Selma was NEVER referred to as Bloody Sunday.
Bloody Sunday happened in 1972, in Northern Ireland, in which 14 people were gunned down and killed by the British
That event was far more bloody. This effort to re-write history and co-opt history is offensive.
I don't know what your rules are on President Johnson, but again, this is a pretty clear effort to FABRICATE HISTORY
Im not too familiar with the edit pages, but it is clear that Im not the only one who had made the correct corrections, and some people are intent on re-writing history for their own present-day political motives.
Nick I apologize, however I am not familiar with how to respond to you - but it is clear that this is a valid dispute and not any vandalism.
In fact, it is at its core an effort by some people to rewrite history, which is extremely wrong.

- Hi and thank you for your message. I did a quick Google News search here and found a significant amount of coverage referring to this event as Bloody Sunday. It is entirely possible for two events to be called the same thing when they occurred in different parts of the world. Either way, that is just my personal opinion. What I can say is that consensus needs to be reached on the article's Talk page in order to make the changes you want to make, as it is clearly controversial. Changing the wording in the article, and then adding your own personal commentary under it, is not going to help matters. I would suggest clicking here and starting a discussion about it. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 00:26, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
Nick
The issues I have brought up are valid historical issues - and it appears someone else is trying to re-write history. It also it appears they are pretty insistent on keeping their fabrication on the internet
From my brief look at some edits pages, Im not the only one trying to get historically accurate information up
My question I suppose is how do we deal with this - my efforts to add additional sentences to clarify different points of view have now been called potential vandalism. It was not vandalism, it was an attempt to find some language that might be considered a neutral ground
Who handles disputes like this
Coyote Cola (talk) 00:29, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
Nick
I see you did the google search - but all of those are CURRENT references to something that happened 50 years ago -
Over the first 49 years, no one EVER called this Bloody Sunday
This is offensive to the Irish, and disrespectful to the families of the 14 Irishmen killed by the British
Did anyone die in Selma? I saw a discussion about what really happened that day.
The article as it is up now has SIGNIFICANT historical inaccuracies - and that goes on to the points about President Johnson and the Voting Rights Act.
Most of this is settled history - there is some outside group trying to re-write history. Im just trying to correct it.
It appears Im not the only one either.
History should not be re-written to suit the political motivations of a few people 50 years after an event. It is that simple Coyote Cola (talk) 00:54, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

Selma to Montgomery marches talk section
Thanks for getting the talk section.started. (I had two edit conflicts as you and I were trying to post to Coyote's tp. I am a bit concerned about the number of editis adding similar material with similar self described motives. In the Bloody Sunday disambiguation list I added the same 'Bloody Sunday' cites for use of the name for the first Selma march on March 7, 1965, in the NYTimes in the same week, and a looking back article written a year later the gave a summary of the name's use for the event, as I did to the lede in Selma to Montgomery marches. I am sure that those with a sense of history realize earlier, similar Civil Rights events (broadly construed) lend their names to the minds of the participants and supporters of similar events. Not to put down popular music, but likely no writer expects to pack a history lesson into a song, rather that writer studies on history to write the song. Thanks again. I am thankful to know that you will be keeping a eye on this and closely connected articles. — Neonorange (talk) 06:26, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

Probable error: John of Toledo
The page "List of dates predicted for apocalyptic events" says that John of Toledo predicted that the end of the world would occur in the year 1186, based on an alignment of planets. I clicked the link for John of Toledo and found that it says he died in the year 1275. This seems implausible, since it implies that John either made the prediction of the end of the world at a date already past, or that he made this prediction (and people found it noteworthy) before he was of mature age, or that he lived well over 100 years. Perhaps someone could rectify this, but I'm not familiar enough with Wikipedia to know to whose attention I should bring it. I notice that you edited the page recently -- do you know? Markthom1729 (talk) 13:24, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
- You're right, it does seem very dubious. I've removed his prediction from the list and explained why on the article's talk page. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 18:42, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

A couple red flags that caused me to revert your link addition in particular were it being a link to a private blog and it being placed in the middle of article text without proper formatting (see WP:MOSLINK). --Nick—Contact/Contribs 22:43, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

- @Hadraa: Semi-protection, which you tried to request at WP:RFPP (request removed due to improper formatting), is not going to help your situation. Semi-protection only stops users without accounts and users with brand new accounts from editing. The users you are involved in an edit war with would be able to edit the article, despite semi-protection. I don't really think full page protection (where the page can only be edited by administrators) is appropriate here, but if you want to try to request it at WP:RFPP just be very careful to follow the detailed instructions at the top of the page. My advice is to continue discussing the issues on the various Talk pages and not engage in edit warring in the meantime. Wikipedia:There is no deadline is an essay that seems applicable. The changes don't always need to be made right now, they can often wait for consensus. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 20:34, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

Ronna and Beverly edits
Hello!
I'm creating an article for a comedy duo's podcast, which is based on characters. It is meant to be a documentation of the canon, and the sole source for that information is the podcast itself. I've added references, which were missing before, and I hope that is what is needed to keep this thing alive.
Thanks! Icahnt (talk) 04:38, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
- @Icahnt: Thank you for contacting me. In my opinion, the article still fails two important Wikipedia guidelines/policies: WP:N and WP:V. Content on Wikipedia has to be verifiable, not only to prove its accuracy, but to ensure that it is notable or important enough to merit inclusion in an encyclopedia. In broad terms, notability is established by significant coverage in independent sources. Saying "the sole source for that information is the podcast itself" indicates to me that such independent coverage doesn't exist. Since you've removed the WP:PROD tag, I do plan on listing this article at WP:AFD if those issues aren't addressed. I can wait a bit to do it, if you need some time to look for independent sources. That's not to say another editor won't do it in the meantime, but I'm happy to hold off for a day. Nick—Contact/Contribs 04:51, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
Hey, Nick-
I've added the missing independent sources to prove the notability and verifiability of the article's content. It's not finished yet, but I think you'll agree there is enough to substantiate the article now. Please let me know if you disagree.

Ronna & Beverly
Please postpone any planned deletion of the Ronna & Beverly page until they can make corrections in accord with your policies. I have no connection to these two acclaimed comediennes.
The two comediennes produce one of the funniest audio and video podcasts available. Their video podcasts often emanate from live shows at UCB Franklin in Los Angeles ( https://www.ucbtheatre.com/show/942 ). Their audio podcasts are available from several sources.
And they have a UK series that airs on SkyTV. A significant amount of their content is available on YouTube and Vimeo.
They are best-selling co-authors of "You'll Do a Little Better Next Time: A Guide to Marriage and Re-marriage for Jewish Singles."
The mid-50s characters the comediennes play are named Ronna Glickman & Beverly Kahn. The comediennes are actually thirty-somethings Jessica Chaffin and Jamie Denbo.

Hi you removed my Speedy tag on the aforementioned article. I would like to point out that Nedunjeliyan II is not mentioned in Maturaikkāñci or Early Pandya Kings. the editor who created this page has now added his name to the aforementioned two articles without providing any new sources. Therefore the article looks suspicious. And the source given does not mention him. Perhaps you can take a look see at what is going onFreeatlastChitchat (talk) 03:53, 27 April 2015 (UTC)
- @FreeatlastChitchat: Hi! I left you a reply here in response to your speedy deletion notification on the creator's talk page. There is a difference between not being notable and not making a credible assertion of notability. The former is a matter for a deletion discussion, the latter allows for speedy deletion. If an article makes a claim of notability, and the claim is at least somewhat credible (which I believe it is), then the article cannot be speedily deleted. Rather, a discussion must be created for consensus to delete. I hope this helps explain why I removed the speedy tag. If you end up creating an AfD for the article, I'll try to see if I can research the print source so I can weigh in on the discussion. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 03:59, 27 April 2015 (UTC)

IssueTrak issue tracking software article submission declined
Hello NickW557, Thank you for reviewing my article; it is my first time as a contributor and your feedback is much appreciated. The subject of the article, IssueTrak, was one of the first types of software in the category that includes FreshDesk, ZenDesk, Jira, and a host of others that have article pages. I felt it was appropriate for IssueTrak to be presented to as a resource for anyone researching that type of software. I studied the articles of the other software solutions and WP's editorial guidelines. I followed the format of FreshDesk, ZenDesk, Jira, Samange and others very closely. I included links to outside sources such as PCReview.com and G2Crowd.com, a popular marketplace for reviews of software solutions of all kinds, and internal links to WP articles about usages of the software.
Would you be so kind as to provide me with a couple of specific examples of where I offered promotional content versus information pertinent to the software it would be most appreciated so that I may make the necessary edits. This software is a very good tool. I feel providing information about it would be useful to the WP audience.

- @Screenwriter88: Thanks for your message! Yes, I'd say they should be. Per WP:ELPOINTS, external links in the body of the article should be avoided except in certain situations. That article had way too many; linking to every product name and creating a directory of software is not one of those situations. I've gone ahead and converted all of them to either internal wikilinks or plain text (in the case of software called things like "Fountain", if we don't have an article on the software its not very helpful to link to Fountain). --Nick—Contact/Contribs 21:14, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

Casey_anderson.jpg
Hello, I got a message from you regarding "fair use" for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Casey_anderson.jpg .
I think there has been some misunderstanding, I did NOT claim the file as "fair use". In fact I did not use the File Upload Wizard because the only option it gave me was "fair use" and this isn't fair use. It is, rather a permitted use under the license stated by the copyright holder on its website. Please see the below text which I included on the image description page (cut and pasted here):
"Permitted use: SPIE on its website ( http://spie.org/x113148.xml ) claims copyright of the original image from which the uploaded cropped, low-resolution image was obtained. SPIE on its website "Terms of Use" (accessed at http://spie.org/x35314.xml as of May 11, 2015) states, "SPIE images may be used for editorial purposes in public media only. They may not be used for advertising, business or personal communication." Wikipedia is free, non-commercial public media and the excerpt from the SPIE photo is being used for non-commercial editorial purposes only, to illustrate the subject being discussed in the accompanying article. Therefore, this image may be used under the permission granted by SPIE via their website, for the limited purpose of illustrating one article on Wikipedia."
The image is being used according to the use permitted by Copyright holder SPIE, i.e. according to their license terms stated in their website. This is different from "fair use".
I can if you like remove the parts about "minimal contribution" and "no commercial opportunities" if you think that muddies the waters, but I put that in because SPIE's license forbids commercial use. But if it is going to make people think I'm claiming fair use, I'll take it out.
As the file is being used pursuant to SPIE's free license terms, not fair use, could you please remove the deletion tag? TheBlinkster (talk) 17:12, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
- @TheBlinkster: If you are not claiming fair use, then the image is subject to immediate speedy deletion (rather than with a two-day delay) under CSD F3 as being licensed for non-commercial use only. Images on Wikipedia have to meet one of the following two criteria: 1. they are licensed under a free license that allows reuse for any purpose including commercial purposes, or 2. they can be used under a claim of fair use satisfying the WP:NFCC. There is, unfortunately, no in-between. SPIE's "free license terms" are not free enough to be considered a "free license" for Wikipedia's standards, so the only alternative is fair use. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 17:19, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
- @NickW557: Thanks, got it. I'll see if I can re-do as a fair use rationale, if not I understand if it must go. TheBlinkster (talk) 17:22, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
- @TheBlinkster: No problem , that's why I went ahead and assumed you meant to use a fair use tag and tagged it as replaceable (allowing a two-day delay) rather than non-commercial use. The problem with fair use with this image is that the subject depicted is alive. One of the criteria for fair use images to be used is that they are not "replaceable" with Wikipedia-standard freely-licensed photos (WP:NFCC#1). The test is not whether a freely-licensed photo actually exists right now, but whether one could be created. Being alive and active in one's field generally means that a freely-licensed photo could be taken of the person, which is why fair use photos of living people are almost always considered replaceable and aren't used.
- There are exceptions to this, but they are few. For example, you uploaded File:David McGreavy in the 1970s.jpg and listed a really good argument for why it isn't replaceable in your fair use rationale, since the person is in prison and someone being able to take a photo of him is highly unlikely. I'm afraid unless you have a similar argument for this this photo, it probably can't be used under fair use either. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 17:34, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
- I understand. I think at this point I'd rather this one just be deleted as I have other possible sources for a free "fair use" picture of this subject. It's not easy to come up with a rationale because he speaks at lots of events, etc. TheBlinkster (talk) 17:36, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
File:8.5 Participant.Logo.COLOR.jpg
Hi Nick, This image is Participant Media's corporate logo. As such, Participant owns the copyright. I don't know how to update that information, but I am a representative of the company (VP, Communications). Not sure how much backup you need? (Jasonbuti (talk) 17:29, 12 May 2015 (UTC))
- @Jasonbuti: Hi! In order for the image to be used on Wikipedia if your company owns the copyright, you would need to do one of the following two things:
- Agree to release the image under a free license or into the public domain which allows anyone to use the logo for any purpose including their own commercial interests. I'm assuming that's probably not what you want to do, so on to the next way...
- Use the image in a specific Wikipedia article under a claim of fair use. This keeps its copyright but allows it to be used for limited purposes on Wikipedia in a way that doesn't violate copyright law. In order to do this, your company will need an existing article on Wikipedia that isn't a draft (it needs to be a bonafide article). You will then need to comply with the non-free content criteria by listing a fair use rationale on the image page justifying its fair use. As it stands now, the image isn't used in any articles. Wikipedia does not allow copyrighted images to linger around unused.
- While doing all of its, its important to keep Wikipedia's conflict of interest rules in mind when it comes to creating and/or editing an article about your company. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 18:44, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
- Take a look at this page: File:Participant Media logo.jpg. If your goal is to replace that logo in the article with the logo you uploaded, you can use the fair use tag and the fair use rationale on that file's page as a guide for creating your file's fair use rationale. Once the image in the article is replaced with the new one, the old one will get tagged for deletion. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 18:51, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
Multiple images
Hey Nick -- thanks for your message. My Professor whose page I am updating is very specific. The final image I uploaded Prof_LaP_FinalFinal.jpg is the one I intend to use. I will update the copyright info accordingly. Thank you again! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Youngvoltiare (talk • contribs) 04:40, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Youngvoltiare: Great, thanks . Once you've gotten the copyright and source info on the final image that you've decided to use, and if the other images won't be used, you may want to tag them for deletion with {{db-self}}. Wikipedia is happy to host free content that is useful, but it isn't an image hosting site per se, so we don't need several versions of virtually the same image unless the differences serve an encyclopedic value. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 04:46, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
P&R Publishing
Nick,
I am new to Wikipedia in terms of adding articles.
A few minutes ago, I saw this message from you: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:JJH1947&oldid=prev&diff=662075430 -- Thank you for uploading File:Prp logo.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright and licensing status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can verify that it has an acceptable license status and a verifiable source. Please add this information by editing the image description page. You may refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.
This file belongs to the company on whose behalf I have created the Wikipedia page P&R Publishing.
Where do I go on Wikipedia, and what fields do I need to fill in, so that this file is compliant with Wikipedia's policies. When I uploaded the file, I filled in all the fields.
I look forward to your help.
Thanks.
JJH1947 (talk) 05:59, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- @JJH1947: Hi. Since the company owns the copyright to the logo, it can only be used on Wikipedia in one of two ways. Firstly, if the company agrees to release it into the public domain or under a free license that allows anyone to use it for any purpose, including their own commercial uses. If that isn't an option, it can be used under a claim of fair use but you need to comply with all of Wikipedia's non-free content criteria. The templates you will likely need to use are Template:Non-free logo and Template:Non-free use rationale logo. The template pages have documentation on how they are used. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 15:19, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- Nick, Thanks for your help. I believe I have fixed the situation regarding the copyright for the logo file prp_logo.png. Please see what I have done here -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:JJH1947 -- and here -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Prp_logo.png -- and let me know if it is OK.
- JJH1947 (talk) 18:52, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- @JJH1947: The image page looks good. I've removed the deletion tag. Thank you for taking care of that! As for your user talk page, I'm not sure what I'm asked to look at. If you're referring to the COI disclaimer on your user page, it looks okay, but I would make it more clear by adding in what capacity you're "responsible for editing" the article, like as an employee of the organization. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 18:59, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- Nick, Thank you for removing the image tag. I am working on the other issues that have been noted about the page, e.g., notability, the need for secondary references, and verification. Please let me know if the information here -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:JJH1947 -- is adequate. JJH1947 (talk) 19:10, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- Nick, If you have a minute, would you please look at the article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%26R_Publishing). I added references 8-16 a few minutes ago; I will add more tomorrow. Are these the types of references that make implicit or explicit claims more verifiable?. Thanks for your help, John JJH1947 (talk) 00:55, 14 May 2015 (UTC)

Bill Osborn photos
Nick,
Thanks for reviewing the "Bill Osborn" article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Osborn) and the new image I uploaded. I'm confused regarding the "derivative work" copyright issue. The image is of Bill Osborn, the subject of the article, in the uniform of a team for which he played. The photo was taken by a family friend and given to Bill Osborn. It's unclear to me where the copyright issue lies.
If it's useful, this is the beginning of the message posted on my talk page:
"This image is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such images would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a screenshot of a computer game or movie. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original image must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work."
Is there a particular annotation I need to make for this image to be acceptable? I very much appreciate your assistance and insight.
The Pantry — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thepantry (talk • contribs) 16:07, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Thepantry: Hi, thanks for your message. The issue with those photographs is that they are photographs of photographs, meaning that we have two different copyrights that have to be accounted for. The data attached to the photo indicates that the images were taken on an iPhone. If you took the iPhone picture, you own the copyright to that image, but whoever took the actual black-and-white printed photograph in the photograph owns the copyright to that. It is that underlying copyright that has not been accounted for, which is why the images are tagged. You need to indicate who took those photographs, and show that they have agreed to release them under the license you've released the iPhone photograph under. I know it is a little confusing. Basically, if you took a photo of a movie poster with your phone, just because you own the photo taken with the phone doesn't mean that you own the movie poster in the photo. Its the same thing here.
- The family friend of Bill Osborn that owns the copyright to the original photos can follow the instructions here to release their rights to those images. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 16:19, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

Hey' I added an image to the Chris Philp page when I created the MP info box. You then put it down for speedy deletion. The photo I got was from parliament.uk and it says you can use any of the images on the site for non-commercial purposes which I feel covers Wikipedia (http://www.parliament.uk/site-information/copyright/use-of-parliamentary-photographic-images). Can I re-upload the image?? Trimfrim20 (talk) 21:30, 13 May 2015 (UTC)trimfrim20
- @Trimfrim20: Hi. Unfortunately, "non-commercial use only", "Wikipedia-use only", "educational use only", and similar licenses are not compatible with Wikipedia policy. Images on Wikipedia are required to be either freely licensed for anyone to use for any reason, including their own commercial use, or they have to qualify for fair use, which images of living people almost always don't. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 21:53, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

image undelete request
Hello Nick,
I edited the "Rhomboid protease" entry on May 19th adding a new image (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:S-E_complex.png&action=edit&redlink=1). This was later deleted by you because of copyright concerns. Unfortunately I couldn't attend to this earlier to dispel the copyright concerns. I have made this image myself and it is based on a figure in my paper that is open access and I own the copyright to it. So there is no copyright problem. Could you please restore the image on the page.
Thanks a lot.

- @KvidoS: Hi, sorry for not replying to you sooner, I was out of town. I tagged the image as not having information on its copyright status, although I did not actually delete it. It was deleted by an administrator after 7 days went by and the copyright status was not provided. If you created the image yourself, you can re-upload it, but you will need to release your copyright claims to the image under a free license that allows anyone to use the image for any purpose, including their own commercial interests. You can see a list of acceptable free licenses here. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 19:27, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
Replaceable fair use File:Durjoy Datta pic.jpg
"Edited Not replaceable with free media because" in the file description page with "n.a.", will it prevent the file from being deleted?. Thanks. Hcns (talk) 19:19, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Hcns: Hi, thanks for your message. No, I'm afraid it wont. The issue with the image is that it is a photograph of a living person being used under a claim of fair use. According to Wikipedia's non-free content guidelines, non-free images of living people are considered replaceable because it is possible that someone could take a photograph of the person themselves, and then release that photo under a free license. The only exception to this is when the person is not ever seen in public, such as a prisoner. Obviously that wouldn't apply to a celebrity. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 19:23, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
- Please help me and you can edit anything on the file discussion page so that the file page doesn't get deleted. Removing the template on the file discussion page will work? Thanks. Hcns (talk) 19:38, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Hcns: I'm afraid I don't think the problem is fixable by editing any pages. The issue is that the image itself, regardless of what the discussion page might say, does not comply with Wikipedia policy. If you disagree with me about that, you can edit the file description page and place the following on the page with your reason for why you think the image does not violate policy:
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed|Your reason that a free replacement can not be found or created}}
. An administrator will review my reasoning, as well as your reasoning, before making a decision about deleting the file. Do not, however, remove the deletion template on the page until the issue is decided by an administrator. Thanks, Nick—Contact/Contribs 19:44, 30 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi, Nick,
Sorry to bother you, but this is my first attempt at a wiki page and I'm totally lost on which copyright notice to use for the Brian Villeponteau-2013.jpg photo.
All I know is that the "author", Dr. Villeponteau, sent me this photo this morning and it has not appeared anywhere. He grants free use for anyone to use it (is this the Creative Commons license?). I've looked and looked and am so confused on which copyright notice to use, plus I can't find that Summary box, which is where I think I'm supposed to insert the copyright info.
Please help? :-)
Thanks, Dave Truesdale, June 15, 2015Dave Truesdale (talk) 19:43, 15 June 2015 (UTC)
- @Dave Truesdale: Hi, thank you for your message. Ultimately, it will be up to Dr. Villeponteau to pick exactly which free license he wants to release the image under. Any license he chooses will need to allow anyone to reuse the image for any purpose, including their own commercial interests. The only thing that can be restricted is specifying that he must be attributed as the copyright holder and/or that the image be reused under a compatible license. The Creative Commons attribution share-alike 3.0 license is just one example of a license that he can use. If he does decide to choose a Creative Commons license, he cannot choose any of their licenses that have a "non-commercial" or "no-derivatives" clause; these are not compatible with Wikipedia's free content policies. Because you are not the copyright holder, you cannot release the image under a license on his behalf. He will need to contact the Wikipedia OTRS team directly by following the instructions at WP:CONSENT and sending an email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 22:37, 15 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks very much, Nick. I have written Dr. Villeponteau outlining the process he needs to do himself, with a copy of this page and your instructions. I really appreciate your help.

Neocities Page Images
I assure you, the images I have uploaded for use on the Neocities page are free-for-use images. Chocolatechip65 (talk) 03:40, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
- @Chocolatechip65: Hi. The problem with your choice of license for these screenshots is that you do not own the copyright to the website you're taking a screenshot of. If you go to an art museum and take a photograph of a copyrighted piece of artwork, you don't suddenly own the copyright to the photo just because you took it. The copyright of the underlying work prevails, and the same concept applies in this case. If you had only uploaded one image, I would have suggested converting it to a claim of fair use, but you're not going to be able to create a large gallery of non-free screenshots under that policy. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 03:44, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
NickW557, While I do not own the Neocities page itself, I do own rights to take a screenshot of my own personal dashboard, and my feed. Neocities eexplicitly says that site content will never be claimed by Neocities itself. However, I do acknowledge that the Neocities homepage, as well as the snapshot from 2013 are not my own. I am attempting to figure out how to fix this citation error. Chocolatechip65 (talk) 03:56, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
- @Chocolatechip65: There is a difference between your site content and the dashboard that you use to edit/manage your site. Neocities might not claim your site content as theirs, but I'm sure they claim their own website's interfaces as their own. Additionally, please don't reupload images to change the copyright info you've put on them, especially ones that are listed at WP:PUF. You can edit the existing image pages to do that. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 05:37, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

There's no final decision yet about freedom of panorama because the case does not reach the High Court of my country. So maybe it's too early to decide. However, some Wikimedia/Wikipedia users are still marking their own panoramic/landmark photos as "free license" (own work) instead of "fair use". Here are some examples (including "private property" places): a. Most photos at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:TheCoffee/Images and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SolaireResort%26Casinojf0966_04.JPG b. other examples: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/78/May_14%2C_2005_-_Rufino_Tower%21.jpg/80px-May_14%2C_2005_-_Rufino_Tower%21.jpg, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SM_Mall_of_Asia_main_facade.jpg, https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/7d/Greenbelt5.JPG/800px-Greenbelt5.JPG, https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/70/Ayala_Museum.jpg/220px-Ayala_Museum.jpg and https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/f1/SMCityBacoor.jpg/800px-SMCityBacoor.jpg Additionally, i have also read an article about freedom of photography in Manila. (https://malate.wordpress.com/2014/09/20/10-no-photography-places-in-manila/) But he did not stated if IP protection is the reason. But the article may be applied to this instance.

Hi Nick,
Could we please use the following tag to attribute Copyrights for the image of Christopher Winter:
The copyright holder of this file allows anyone to use it for any purpose, provided that the copyright holder is properly attributed. Redistribution, derivative work, commercial use, and all other uses are permitted. |
Kindest regards,

Hello, I received your message on licensing for the image I used with Jason Adelman & Karina Smirnoff. I contacted Adelman, and requested he send his permission directly to the email you provided, which Adelman did 5 minutes ago. Eugene M. Locke photo
Nick: I now have posted the Eugene Locke photo on my own website so that you have a URL that you can use. It is http://www.tomstouchmemories.com/blog.html
I hope this works for you. The photo will need to be uploaded to appear on the following Wikipedia web page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_M._Locke
I will also try to make the change on the request I've already submitted and resubmit that.
Thanks for your help. It's much appreciated since I'm a novice on Wikipedia posting. All the best. 071185ben (talk) 03:11, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
- @071185ben: Thank you for your quick reply! I've uploaded the image and approved the upload request. I've added the image to the article in a very basic way just to get it in there, since fair use images aren't allowed to sit around unused. Feel free to change the way the image appears in the article. You can read the picture tutorial for information on how to format standalone images in an article, or you could consider using an infobox. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 03:39, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi NickW! Regarding this draft which you declined: it was tagged as a copyright violation of this and you added a tag stating the source page was CC0. The source page and the linked WebCite here do not seem to contain such a release. Can you point me to where you found the CC0 release? I need to close out the bot's ticket on this page. Thanks! CrowCaw 18:54, 18 July 2015 (UTC)
- @Crow: Hi! The release is actually on the source page, it's just very non-obvious. If you scroll to the bottom of the text section using their on-page scroll bar (not the browser scroll bar), you'll see a sentence below the listing of staff names that says "The text of this page is released under the Creative Commons Zero Waiver 1.0." The website seems uncooperative with some browsers but I just checked and it's still there. Let me know if you need me to screenshot it for you. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 23:59, 18 July 2015 (UTC)
- Perfect, I got it now! The on-page scroller didn't appear in one browser but does in several others for me. Thanks for the clarification (and for catching that!). CrowCaw 19:02, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
regarding nominations of my uploads for deletion.
I am here to say that all pictures uploaded by me are captured by me using my mobile phone camera and editing of the pictures are done by me using picsart application. Thats why all my pictures have low resolution. I lived in Robertsganj Sonbhadra. All these places are close to my home town. There is no violation of copyright.
So i request all of you to remove your nominations for the deletion. From my uploads. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kartiktiwary3 (talk • contribs) 06:48, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

Culture+Travel magazine image
Dear Nic,
Thanks for so quickly responding to my request regarding the images of Culture+Travel magazine. Understood on the topic of multiple images, my intention was simply to make them available, not to create a gallery using all of them.
What I would like to do, is follow this example of showing a cover just like is done here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travel_%2B_Leisure
The cover image shown there uses the same fair use as I would like to use for the Culture+Travel page. If it is deemed by wikipedia to be relevant for that magazine to use an image to illustrate the topic, then it should be exactly the same in this case too no?
Plus on the example that you gave, TIME Magazine, actually two covers are shown to illustrate the history, so I think given that both these examples use the "fair use for magazine covers," the same should apply here.
Therefore my suggestion would be to use two images just like with TIME - the first edition cover (09_2006_CULTURE+TRAVEL_COVER.jpg), and the redesign cover mentioned within the article. [05_2008_CULTURE+TRAVEL_COVER.jpg]
Could you assist with uploading those two? Thanks!
Regards, Robert.

Life aid images
Hi
I just got your messages about the Life aid images. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Dougoinsf/sandbox#Composition)
sorry to be ignorant. happy to get the form letter submitted. will take a couple days.
question: permission by the owner given would allow others to use the image freely, understood. but not loose the trademark. for instance, no one can slap the image on their product and call it a life aid beverage product.
sorry to ask, but we just need to be clear.
thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dougoinsf (talk • contribs) 23:43, 22 July 2015 (UTC)
- @Dougoinsf: Hi! Thank you for your message. No worries about not knowing the process; image uploading is one of the most difficult processes to get familiar with on Wikipedia because of the legal implications involved. I need to preface this by saying I can give you my opinion, but this is not legal advice. Generally, trademark issues and copyright issues are two separate things. Wikipedia only requires you to waive most of your copyright rights related to the images, not your trademark rights. The most restrictive free license we probably allow users to license their images under is the {{cc-by-sa-3.0}} license, the full text of which can be found here for you to review and decide for yourself if you are retaining your trademark rights.
- It should be noted that the logo you uploaded (File:LifeAid Logo.jpg/File:Life Aide Beverage Logo.jpg) doesn't necessarily need to be freely licensed to be used, if your article is approved. Once your draft article is accepted as a mainspace article, you could upload the logo as fair use, but only after it is accepted as an article (so it would need to be deleted in the meantime if that were the option you wanted to go with). The other images, however, would not qualify for fair use and need to be freely licensed. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 05:51, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
Thank you!!!!

Untitled question
Hello Nick please how can I add the copyright tag? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rberchie (talk • contribs) 17:34, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
- @Rberchie: Hi. You go to WP:TAGS/FREE and pick a free license that you want to release the image under. You then place the appropriate template on the image description page by editing the page and adding the template code. For example, if you want to release the image into the public domain, you'd put {{PD-self}} on the page. If you want to release it under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license, you'd place {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}} on the page, and so on. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 03:28, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the upload, but I noticed you used the source filenames, which omit a lot of context information (like which telescope). The RFU instructions say to suggest a clearer filename in the section heading, which I did.
Was that a deliberate decision on your part for some reason not clear to me, or an oversight? 71.41.210.146 (talk) 18:24, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
- Mostly an oversight. Usually the header instructions are the least-followed part of the FFU instructions, so to be honest I wasn't paying enough attention to the header to realize it contained your requested destination file names. I'll request rename of both files over on Commons. It's usually pretty quick. Sorry for missing that. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 18:28, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
- And its Done. Files are now at File:Large Synoptic Survey Telescope 3 4 render 2013.png and File:Large Synoptic Survey Telescope profile render 2013.png as you had them listed in the section header of your request. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 18:44, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

- @Rock39: Hi. I reported the IP user's behavior at WP:AN/EW here, which has resulted in the IP being blocked for 1 week for edit warring. For the record, have you ever edited the Nanak Shah Fakir article with a different user name or as an anonymous editor? It seems odd to me that a brand new user would jump right in the middle of a content dispute. If you are using this account as an alternative for another account you had in the past, you should disclose the connection between the accounts. Editing an article from multiple accounts to get around edit warring accusations and/or to make it appear that your side has more support is a violation of WP:SOCK and will likely result in serious blocks. - @Bog5576: and @PrimeNotice: The problem is you guys keep reverting over each other while the discussion is going on. That is not okay. Edit warring is disruptive, and anything over 3 reverts in a 24 hour period is an automatic violation of policy (fewer may still be a violation of WP:EW). PrimeNotice was given an edit warring warning and continued to revert anyway, now amassing almost 15 reverts today. For this reason, the issue has been referred to WP:AN/EW. - For content to be included in Wikipedia, it needs to be supported by reliable sources. That YouTube video is not a reliable source. This alternative name for the game cannot be included in the article until you can demonstrate that reliable sources are calling it that. Regards, Nick—Contact/Contribs 22:21, 11 August 2015 (UTC)
Where was the bias in my revision to Graceland?
There was only word in my revision from which bias may be extrapolated: "exploited". But that's a stretch. Let's take a look at a dictionary definition of that term: verb (used with object) 1. to utilize, especially for profit; turn to practical account: to exploit a business opportunity. 2. to use selfishly for one's own ends: employers who exploit their workers.
Both definitions apply in this context, as Paul Simon leveraged his wealth and celebrity in order to solicit source material from impoverished South African musicians, without crediting them as authors. This is explicitly exploitative.
Would you remove the word "slavery" from the Wiki article on US history? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.249.90.65 (talk) 00:07, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- Hi, thank you for your message. What makes the language non-neutral is a combination of the wording (exploited) and, more importantly, the lack of any reliable sources cited to show that the information and language you're providing is not only accurate as to the facts but also an accurate representation of how reliable sources are wording such criticism. One of Wikipedia's core policies is that original research is not permitted. It doesn't matter if you or I think it's exploitation; what matters is what the reliable sources have to say about it. To your point about slavery articles, there are literally thousands of sources out there that describe those events in American history as "slavery" and so Wikipedia does as well. Regards, Nick—Contact/Contribs 00:26, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
... As there are literally thousands of articles on colonialism and labor exploitation that enumerate countless warrants of labor relations analogous to that between Paul Simon and uncredited South African musicians.
No citation is necessary: the truth of the statement is evidenced in the work. Paul has absolutely no training as a vocal or instrumental arranger in any african music, and gave no authorship credit to any indigenous musicians. Likely, many of the musicians credited as performers were primary authors of this work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.249.90.65 (talk) 00:48, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- And unfortunately, that analysis you've just provided is original research. Saying that no citation is necessary is contrary to Wikipedia policy. Essentially, our articles are a summary of what reliable sources have to say about a particular subject, not what our volunteers think or what the media should be saying. I'm afraid that without evidence of such a statement being backed up by reliable sources (meaning specifically characterizing this artist's work as exploitive, not labor exploitation in general), your edits are not going to stand. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 01:16, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

how to upload file and create page
heip me — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rocker Ritesh (talk • contribs) 01:13, 6 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Rocker Ritesh: Hi. You already have a user page at User:Rocker Ritesh. You can edit that page, in accordance with the guidelines at WP:USERPAGE, to be about yourself in the context of Wikipedia. Unless you meet Wikipedia's rather strict criteria for inclusion, you'll need to stop trying to write an article about yourself at Rocker Ritesh. Eventually the title will be locked so no one can create an article with that name, and you could be blocked. Wikipedia is not a social media website like Facebook. As for uploading images, that is rather complex. If you took the photo yourself and own the copyright to it, go to the Commons upload wizard at c:Special:Upload Wizard to upload it for use. If not, leave me a message here advising what the source of the image is and we'll go from there. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 01:29, 6 September 2015 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of File:Crowd.jpg
A tag has been placed on File:Crowd.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 00:08, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
- @GeoffreyT2000: Thanks for the notification. I've no objection to the deletion; I simply moved a file and blanked the resulting redirect so that the Commons image would be visible. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 00:43, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for your information
Hi Nick, the links you provided can really be useful. I appreciate it, but i would like to ask you one more question. Somali Wikipedia is not as rich as English Wikipedia, there are many missing tools including most of templates. When i copy a template from English Wiki, mostly it doesn't work in Somali Wikipedia. It says "there is a loop", "something is missing" et cetera. My question is how to create "a simple" template when the one i copy does not work. How to start it from the scratch? if there is a guide or some tutorial video or article, it will be very useful. Thank you. Ismail Suge (talk) 01:03, 10 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Ismail4all: No problem! Templates are a tricky business, and I'm only good at the most basic of templates. It's likely that the templates you're trying to copy over are dependent on other templates that might be nested inside of them, which when not present on the Somali Wikipedia, cause the template to break. The starting place for template help documents is Help:Template, which gives a basic overview. There are several other pages dealing with advanced template parameters. Most, if not all, of these pages are listed in the "See also" section of that page (Help:Template#See also). Hopefully these help you! Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 02:07, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

I have read your reply; of course I disagree with your reasoning, otherwise I wouldn't have suggested the image. I think someone's appearance can tell a great deal about someone and help bring history to life in various other ways and a picture outside of the relevant time period just doesn't add much.
But it's Wikipedia's loss and I'm not willing to invest further time and energy into this matter. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.139.82.82 (talk) 00:17, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you for your message. I'm sorry that you disagree with my reasoning. The Files for upload page essentially boils down to a page where you can request that another user take the responsibility for uploading a file on your behalf, when you don't have an autoconfirmed account. Unfortunately, I'm not willing to upload the image, because I don't believe doing so would comply with policy. You can always create an account (it's free! ) and then consider uploading the image yourself. I do believe, however, it would be nominated for deletion and I'm not sure it would survive such a nomination. Regards, Nick—Contact/Contribs 04:29, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, Mark — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mark5522 (talk • contribs) 22:00, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Mark5522: Hi. Thanks for your messages. In regards to this image, there are some concerns. I don't doubt that you assembled this image yourself, but it appears to be a derivative work, meaning it is made up of other copyrighted images that you might not own. For example:
- The logo. You've included the logo for the Center for Morton's Neuroma in the bottom-right corner. Do you own the logo? You said you're affiliated with the center, but do you have the legal right to release their logo under a free license? If you do, are you sure you want to? By releasing the entire image as a whole into the public domain or under a free license, you're releasing the incorporated logo as well. This means that anyone can reuse the image, as well as the logo, for any purpose, including their own commercial interests.
- The background image. Did you personally draw the image of the foot with the red shading? If this was taken from another source, it retains the copyright of that source. We'd need the source of the image identified so that we could make sure that it is freely licensed as well, with a license that is compatible with the license you've selected for the image as a whole.
- What I suggest to you, is that jumping through these legal hurdles really isn't necessary in this case. As I mentioned before, if your goal is to make the article easier to locate for those using the alternative names that the image lists for the condition, your best bet is to create redirects for all those alternative names, which will forward users searching for the condition by those names to the article in question. Then, once they've located the article, the alternative names can simply be spelled out in plain text for everyone to read without needing to illustrate them in the form of an image.
- Nevertheless, these are just my suggestions. If you're intent on uploading the image, and can answer the above questions in a way that allows it to be uploaded and can provide proof upon request, then the image can be uploaded. However, because of the intricate copyright concerns here, the Files for upload page is not the right venue. If you wish the image uploaded, please follow the instructions at WP:DONATEIMAGE to correspond with the Wikimedia OTRS team to confirm permission for the various components of the derivative image. Please, help me to add a link to the French article about Hearthis.at... instead of trying to delete it. It is serious.

Hi,
a) This is a generic illustration that can be reproduced easily (PowerPoint would do the job). Just give a look on the illustration- it is easy to reproduce and appears in every textbook about geometry. I don't think it needs a license.
b) I need it in order to add a section in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atan2.

image denial
You stated that the image I submitted was denied and gave the reason as "the reason can be found on the main site about uploading an image"...I apologize for my newcomer status but that doesn't do much for me because I am completely new and don't fully understand what I did wrong. I was just trying to get started by doing something easy and following what I understood the instructions to be. If you could be more specific I would appreciate it. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shortsstackyo (talk • contribs) 07:59, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Shortsstackyo: Hi. Your image upload request was declined because, while your request claimed the image was licensed under an acceptable free license ({{cc-by-3.0}}), the Flickr page said otherwise. It said "(C) all rights reserved". This is unacceptable for use on Wikipedia. Our policy requires an image to be licensed in a way that allows anyone to reuse it for any reason, even commercial purposes. The only exception are images which qualify for fair use under WP:NFCC, which this image would not. You can see your request and the denial at this archive. Let me know if you've any further questions. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 14:38, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. advice about the topic
Good evening! Thank you again for sharing with me "Draft". I have one more question to better understand the Wikipedia system. If I add my article to the Draft, will editors or moderators help me to complete it? Or, when I add all information what I have found one more time, somebody will delete it in one second as in a previous time?( How I understood, I have chosen a tricky category - for me it looked like an easy one. So, you suggest me to continue work on "Tigga Tower" project or leave it? Thank you for help)--Galyna Chekan 19:57, 8 December 2015 (UTC)
- @Galyna.symphony: When you write the draft article, you will be given the option of submitting it for review by an experienced editor when you feel like it is ready to be reviewed. If you do that, and the reviewer doesn't think it is ready to be approved, they will help you by providing the reasons why it couldn't be approved, and likely some suggestions for how to overcome those shortcomings. They probably won't help you actually write/edit the draft, but they will provide feedback. Your draft will only be quickly deleted if it meets our strictest and most serious deletion criteria, namely if it is a copyright violation, unquestionably blatant spam, or an attack page. Otherwise, even if it would qualify for deletion as an article, it would only be "declined" as a draft, giving you time and suggestions for improving it, rather than being deleted.
- As for whether or not I think you should continue with the Tigga Tower project, I have no idea. Mainly, because the Tigga Tower article got deleted before I could read it, and I do not have access to view deleted content.
- I hope this helps. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 20:07, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:VIXX LR at Beautiful Liar Showcase in Hongdae.jpg
Hello Nick, I am not sure if there is an alternative available for File:VIXX LR at Beautiful Liar Showcase in Hongdae.jpg. It's the only one I could find.Alicia leo86 (talk) 08:30, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
- @Alicia leo86: Hi. Unfortunately for non-free content purposes, "replaceable" doesn't mean that a freely-licensed replacement exists now, it means that a freely-licensed replacement could be created. For photos that illustrate living people, it is almost always assumed that they could be replaced because the person is living so someone could take a photo of them and freely license it. Exceptions to this rule are usually only made for people who are totally inaccessible, like prisoners, not for those who are active in their field. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 16:37, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

Aakash1990
I noticed that you recently nominated 3 images for speedy deletion which were uploaded by user:Aakash1990. Said user has uploaded several more images which are in breach of copyright, including one from Google Maps. The user has declared CC on all images, which look as if they were picked off of Google Images. Uamaol (talk) 13:03, 18 December 2015 (UTC)
- @Uamaol: Thanks for the info! Oddly enough, the images I think you're referring to were actually uploaded by a different account (Zahidullah122), and then Aakash1990 came along and tagged them as his or her own self-work. One of them is, IMO, a blatant copyvio and I've tagged it for F9. The other one, which I don't think could have been taken from Google Street View since there does not appear to be any Street View coverage of that area, is suspicious but not obvious, so I've listed it at WP:PUF. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 15:39, 18 December 2015 (UTC)
- In fact, it's odd enough to me that I've taken it to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Zahidullah122. --Nick—Contact/Contribs 15:50, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

- @Colombabianca: Thanks for taking the time and effort to improve the page. I've read through it and I believe the advert & COI issues have been resolved, at least mostly. I've removed those tags. I've replaced the "needs more sources" tag to a slightly different one that indicates that the article needs more inline citations. It has references, but reading through the lead section (which is too long, by the way - most of that info can go into sections within the article), it is unclear which sources are providing what information. This is where inline citations come into play, by directly attributing facts to their cited sources. Jonas should be emailing in permission soon. Is that all that is needed? Germblaster76 (talk) 20:04, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Germblaster76: Thanks for your message. When he emails permission, it's important that he's giving permission for the image to be licensed under the license you chose (or another acceptable free license), and that he's not just giving permission for "Wikipedia to use it". The image has to be usable under a license that allows reuse by anyone, even for commercial purposes. After such an email has been sent, edit the image page to include the following code to the "Permission" section:
{{subst:OP}}

how to unblock

- @Rocker Ritesh: Hi. The account you used to leave me this message is not blocked (or you would not have been able to do so). Is there another account you've used that has been blocked? I assume you might mean that your article has been deleted (Rocker Ritesh). Articles are not connected to your account, so the page being deleted has no direct effect on your account. Your article was deleted because it did not assert the notability of the subject. In order for Wikipedia to have an article about someone or something, that person or thing has to be notable. Notability is established, generally, by showing that multiple reliable sources have considered the person or thing important enough to write about in detail. For more info, see this page. Speedy deletion nomination of File:RIMG0002.JPG
A tag has been placed on File:RIMG0002.JPG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.
Stefan2 (talk) 22:47, 17 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Stefan2: ...okay, thanks? All I did was move a file, which automatically left a redirect behind. I went ahead and blanked my redirect and left the F2 tag. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 22:53, 17 January 2016 (UTC)

Image permissions
Hi, New to this, so forgive what my be dumb questions. I'm trying to polish up the entry on Tom Adams. As he's an illustrator, I'd like to use images. I took some images from his own website. Do I need specific permission from him to use them? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Barnetts1615 (talk • contribs) 18:55, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Barnetts1615: When you uploaded the images, you tagged them making a very specific claim—that the copyright owner (I'm assuming Adams himself) had agreed to release the images under the GNU Free Documentation License. This is an important claim, because you're saying the owner of the copyright has allowed anyone to reuse the image for any purpose, even their own commercial purposes, if they follow the terms of the license. Where did Adams agree to release these images under such a license? --Nick—Contact/Contribs 19:01, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
I think I got really confused with the process. I had assumed since Adams himself put them up there on his website, that it was ok for it to also be on Wikipedia. You're right--I think I was just blindly clicking things by that point. I've written to him, but is there a simpler category this falls in? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Barnetts1615 (talk • contribs) 23:17, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
Hi--still confused. I can get an email from Tom Adams saying I can use images on his website. But what category of copyright does that fit into? Still not sure of what to check off. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Barnetts1615 (talk • contribs) 01:00, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Barnetts1615: So Tom Adams would need to email our Wikimedia's email response team giving authorization for the images to be released under one of these free licences. It is not good enough for him to say that he gives permission for them to be used on Wikipedia, unfortunately. He needs to say that he is willing to license those images under a free license that allows anyone to reuse or alter the images for any purpose (including commercial purposes), provided he is properly attributed. The most restrictive license we allow is probably the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License. If he's willing to do that, he would follow the instructions listed at WP:DCM. I hope this helps.
- P.S. When leaving people talk page messages, please sign them by typing four tildes (~~~~) at the end of the message. This will automatically sign them with your user name and date/time stamp. Thanks!

yea, you go ahead and delete it. it just a screenshot goddmt, get over it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ArtiBarti (talk • contribs) 05:13, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
- @ArtiBarti: Please don't be rude on my talk page. Wikipedians need to work together, civilly. It is understood that uploading images on Wikipedia is one of the harder things to get right, because we have so much policy governing image use. This is necessary, though, because there are serious legal implications that go along with using images on the web. Non-free images have to have a detailed fair use rationale that explains how the use of the image complies with each of the non-free content criteria. Your rationale is lacking, and in the case of WP:NFCC#3b, contradicts policy. If you have any questions about how to resolve these issues, feel free to ask. Regards, Nick—Contact/Contribs 05:23, 3 February 2016 (UTC)

Sawyer Auger - Speedy Deletion
NickW557 -
Sorry about deleting the speedy deletion notice. I've been using Wikipedia for years and just recently created a user page in order to edit and add information. Sawyer is a singer that I'm a fan of and was surprised when I couldn't find a page for him. I would really appreciate it if I could continue working on the Sawyer Auger page, it is a work in progress, and will not simply be a "one line" page.

One file in my view is freely available to Wikipedia under its original terms of use, which are specified. However, there does seem to be a problem with the other one. - @Rthome25: Oh, that makes more sense. The bot that came is not the bot I was talking about. It was tagging the page indicating that there is file history that needs redacting. Unfortunately, you removed the tags before the bot I was talking about (User:Theo's Little Bot) could resize it during its run today. If the tag is left in place, the bot should do it tomorrow when it makes its daily run. The bot will then replace the {{non-free reduce}} tag with a different tag indicating that the reduction has been completed, and that the history needs to be redacted. Leave these tags in place. An admin will come along later and do the redaction, and then remove the tags. In the meantime, I'll remove my warning to you, as it was a misunderstanding. Fair use rationale for the Utah Teapot
Hey, I'm not sure if I was supposed to get back to you here or not, but I've left my best attempt at the required rationale box at the Utah teapot upload request. Thanks for clueing me into its necessity. Sleepcircle (talk) 20:00, 18 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Sleepcircle: Thanks for providing the proposed fair use rationale. It's actually rather well worded; better than some I've seen from experienced file uploaders, so good job! That said, I've sort of declined the request, and here's why:
- I'm not convinced that use of the non-free image in the article satisfies WP:NFCC#1, because one could argue that the textual description of him drawing it by hand on graph paper is an acceptable alternative. When I read that sentence, and then view the image, I'm seeing precisely what I expected to see based on the text description, which could mean that use of the image isn't critical for understanding the article. I tend to be a bit conservative about such things when uploading them under my own account, though. So, once your account is autoconfirmed, if you disagree and would like to upload it yourself, I won't be the one to nominate it for deletion. It may even survive a deletion discussion if someone else nominates it. Who knows? Nevertheless, I've come up with a bit of a compromise: I've included a link to the image in the article using the {{external media}} template. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 16:32, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
- @NickW557: Nah, as I filled the fair use template out, I actually kinda wondered if this might be the answer, so I won't fight you on this one. Thanks for your prompt attention, though--and thanks for kindly adding it in an alternate form. Peace out. Sleepcircle (talk) 20:25, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

I am trying to contribute to the wikipedia page Polio Children. It is a charity from my local area that has done great things for disabled children in developing countries.
I work alongside the UK trustee who has provided me with photographs to put on the wikipedia page to supplement the text and give a visual representation as to the type of work they do.
However, when I upload them they are taken down by yourself due to uncertain copyright laws. I can assure you that all the pictures we have tried to use are owned by the charity and are in use across our websites and publicity materials. All photos that we try to use that we haven't produced ourselves, we have got permission to use them freely from their creators.
Please advise on how we can upload these photos to Polio Children wikipedia page without the risk of them being taken down.
Many thanks,

- @AdamRovers1990: Hello, thanks for the note. In order for these images to be used, you'll need to have the owner of the copyright (who gave you permission to use them) send an email to our OTRS team following the format & instructions found at c:Commons:Email templates. They'll need to agree to license the images under a free license that allows anyone to reuse or alter the images for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Terms such as "free to use on Wikipedia only," "free to use for non-commercial purposes," and "free to use for educational purposes only" are not allowed. Once permission has been confirmed, you can upload and use the images. Cheers, Nick—Contact/Contribs 15:56, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
Steve Rannazzisi Bio Update
Nick,
Thank you for your prompt response. I posted a response in that thread, though I'm not sure if that pings you. So, I'm putting this here as well.
I respect Wikipedia's stance and have no intention of subverting it. I'm struggling to understand the burden of proof I am failing to provide. A third of all his prominent Web mentions turn up information on the incident. Almost every post he makes on social media has at least one person reference the scandal. He has been interviewed about it on the radio multiple times this year.
Rannazzisi made a concerted effort to align himself with the attacks to build his career. His multiple retellings over several years demonstrates how integral this personal narrative was to his career path and public image. He isn't accused of lying about escaping the South Tower of the World Trade Center on 9/11. It's proven he did that for 14 years. This is who he consciously presented himself as. His biography is incomplete if this incident isn't mentioned in the first paragraph.
Thank you--and all the other editors-- for the time and consideration you have shown.

Image issues
Hi Nick, can you take a look at this Image and see what next needs to be done. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 16:57, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Bzuk: Hi. Did you send the email in question to the OTRS permission team? See Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries. In the email from the copyright holder, they'll need to specifically state what free license they're releasing the image under. See WP:TAGS/FREE for acceptable licenses.
