Ping

Sorry for the ping in deWP just before. For some reason this edit summary was suggested as I typed and then I accidentally hit enter. Happy New Year. --Leyo 10:04, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

@Leyo I did scratch my head for a moment but no bother. Happy new year to you, too. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:10, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

Revdel/oversight request

Can you suppress or at least revdelete the usernames in all the disruptive edits at Bodily integrity, Personal rights, and Self-ownership? They are/include a real name of someone who didn't make the edits and are intended to make the person with that name look bad. 41.36.160.35 (talk) 16:54, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

Let me know if I missed anything. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:09, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
You missed the oldest one and the ones with partial or backwards names that suggest the whole name, as well as the reversion edit summaries and the accounts' talk pages and SPI. 197.52.60.200 (talk) 17:18, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
I'm not deleting user talk pages or SPIs. Those are internal-facing pages that you would only find if you were looking for them. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:25, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi Harry - there's a thread on the oversight mailing list about this. I have downgraded the suppression to revision delete. Hope that's okay. PhilKnight (talk) 17:48, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

@Xaosflux not to worry. With so much to do an the somewhat truncated timeframe it was almost inevitable that something would be missed. Nitpick

It is nice to see you are practicing your new mind reading powers ;). When you blocked Anes112 for socking you used the template {{Checkuser block}}, that template refers to IP addresses and networks, not accounts. You might want to use {{Checkuserblock-account}} which refers to accounts. There is my daily nitpick, thanks, Seawolf35 T--C 06:56, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

You cannot edit my talk-page

Hi Harry. With all due respect, but unless SaucyLasagne is your alter ego, you cannot edit my talk-page; and even then you cannot, however well-intentioned you are. Especially not w/o explaining why!

Have a great year, Arminden (talk) 14:23, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

@Arminden I assumed you wouldn't want to read a screed from a now-blocked editor but if you want to restore it please feel free. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:22, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi Harry. Sorry, I didn't recognise you at first. Yes, by all means, I love my collection of fan mail. It's also rare that someone would speak up his mind on Wiki, most turn to weasels around here. Disruption

Hello, I hope you doing well! The user you blocked (100michel1) is back with new accounts editing all Wikipedia projects including English Wikipedia. Amita2025 is just one of them, can you please report him? I'm editing with my phone and it's not easy for me. Thanks! Mikeimi (talk) 10:57, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

I am one of the old users of Wikipedia. You have no right to slander me. I am not a spare account Amita2025 (talk) 12:06, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

@Mikeimi edits all the content unnecessarily, I warned him to speak and tell the problem before editing, but he deletes the edit without consultation. Amita2025 (talk) 12:05, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

  • Mikeimi, Amita2025, you are both new(ish) users with a limited number of edits attached to these accounts. You are both being way too free and easy with throwing around accusations - seemingly based on a limited amount of information and showing zero proof. You are both being way too free and easy with the revert button on several articles. I suspect it will not be long before one or both of you are up at WP:ANI if you've not been blocked before that happens.
I suggest that you both cool down a lot, and if either of you have proof of serious wrong-doing, you take it to ANI with the diffs to prove your point. Until that happens, I suggest laying off the revert button and using the talk pages rather than continuing the disruptive edit warring across multiple pages. - SchroCat (talk) 12:23, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
@Mikeimi Amita is  Confirmed to Michel and therefore Iran Turkey war. I'll have a more detailed look later and I'll file an SPI for record keeping. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:43, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Why did you block me? I am not a spare, look at my records, I only translate the contents, that's all Amita2026 (talk) 13:27, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Believe me, I am not a malicious user, I only post content that is approved in other languages on Wikipedia.
Please unblock my account, I am a useful user Amita2026 (talk) 13:29, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Why did you block me?

Why did you block @Amita2025? Did I violate Wikipedia's rules? I made the edits, why did you block me, please explain Amita2026 (talk) 13:26, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

You're blocked because you keep creating more accounts. Every new account you create will probably get blocked. If you want to appeal, you need to do it from your original account. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:03, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Request for a peer review

Hi Harry, belated new year's greetings to you. I have nominated the article Sam Manekshaw for peer review because I have expanded it and want to take it to FAR. I have incorporated the suggestions from the last 2 FARs in 2018. You were a part of one of these and I would be much obliged if you would take part in this PR, given your skills in and understanding of military history. Thanks in advance. Matarisvan (talk) 07:57, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

@Matarisvan Thanks for the invitation. I'll try and carve out some time for a proper look but I can't guarantee it. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:04, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Charles Sargeant Jagger

Did you know of this work by Jagger, [1]? I didn't. Apparently, it decorated a fireplace at Mulberry House on Smith Square and references a ménage à trois between the house's owners, Lord and Lady Melchett, and the, very bohemian, Gilbert Cannan. If there's not an article on the house in that lot, I'm a Dutchman. But I'll have to write it myself, as I suspect you will have less time for content creation these days! All the best. KJP1 (talk) 14:55, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

I did not. Sounds like there's an interesting story to be told there! But as you can imagine I have a lot of other demands on my attention at the moment, and I'm trying to pick some of the low-hanging fruit off my to-do list, starting with some railway viaducts. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:24, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
It’s done - Mulberry House - but it could be much expanded. Worth a trip to the V&A to see it, I’d suggest. KJP1 (talk) 18:42, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Nice work! I'm obviously familiar with Reg from Lutyens (Ned designed the family tomb and all roads lead to Mells, a tiny insignificant village in Somerset!). I'm also happy to see Midland Bank, Poultry getting some attention. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:08, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Featured article nomination for Grey Owl

Hi HJ, I understand that you offer mentoring in featured article nominations. I have extensively revised the Grey Owl article in the last months and feel it could succeed in the featured article process. Would you be willing to help a newbie? Dsiedler (talk) 10:59, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

@Dsiedler I don't know anything about the subject but I had a quick read through the article. It looks in reasonable shape. I notice you're citing entire books instead of page numbers or ranges; you'd need to be more precise for an FA. Generally, we expect book citations to include the ISBN You also need a reference at the end of every paragraph as a minimum. You should check that all your links to YouTube comply with WP:YOUTUBE. If you address all of that, I can't see any red flags. You could open a peer review if you haven't already. And if there's a similar article that's already an FA it would be a good idea to compare and contrast your article with that one and look at its FAC to see the sorts of comments reviewers had so you can hopefully head them off. Hope that helps, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:08, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Many thanks! I will provide the ISBNs and make sure all paragraphs have refs. You say "you're citing entire books instead of page numbers or ranges". Could you provide an example? I checked and found all book references have page numbers (either in the citation itself or in the rp template) except one: Gleeson, Kristin (currently #22). I do not have access to either a PDF or print copy and the ebook does not provide reliable page numbers. I used a chapter reference. Is that good enough? Dsiedler (talk) 19:17, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
I've taken care of the concerns you raised and have looked through the documentation of the FAC process for a long time now, but have been unable to figure out how exactly the article is to be nominated. Please explain that or point me to the page that explains it. Thanks! Dsiedler (talk) 18:12, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
@Dsiedler in a nutshell, slap {{subst:FAC}} on the talk page, follow the red link that says "initiate nomination", add your nomination statement that explains what the article is about and how it meets the criteria, then add {{Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Grey Owl/archive1}} to WP:FAC. The full instructions are at WP:FAC#Nominating in the collapsed box. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:15, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Red-tailed hawk (nest) 03:32, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

@Red-tailed hawk congrats on the new buttons! That block was discussed at one or other of the noticeboards and there was a general feeling that it was long overdue if I remember correctly. I can dig up the details when I can get to my computer. I think a topic ban from Russia-Ukraine relations and conflicts (past and present) is an absolute minimum but it's probably worth getting a wider audience at AN. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:29, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
I've been able to take a look at the AE discussion that preceded it. I can ask the user if they'll accept a RUSUKR tban on their own; I think it's reasonable as well. I've talked to a few other admins and I think I could slap that on them unilaterally per WP:CTOP while unblocking them, but I feel a bit uncomfortable doing so unless they agree to it. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 04:49, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
@Red-tailed hawk RUSUKR is a community-based process so you want WP:GS not CTOP but yes you could impose a topic ban unilaterally. That's the point of general sanctions/contentious topics but I get that those processes look scary to the uninitiated! I would very strongly oppose an unblock with a topic ban at a minimum. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:03, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
Since I last messaged you, the user has agreed on their talk page to accept 1RR and a specific Russia-Ukraine-related topic ban.
To clarify, does I would very strongly oppose an unblock with a topic ban at a minimum indicate opposition to any unblock, or merely opposition to an unblock without a topic ban? I’d unblock them if the topic ban proposed on talk+1rr is sufficient for you, but I want to get clarity before pushing the button. — Red-tailed sock (Red-tailed hawk's nest) 16:40, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
@Red-tailed hawk I'm happy with a 1RR and topic ban. That seems like a reasonable restriction to prevent disruption as long as they understand that this is their last bit of rope. Hopefully they'll do something productive elsewhere, but if they just move to a different hot-button topic and start causing problems there they need to understand that they'll be indef'd again. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:47, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
Ok. I've unblocked the user with a 1RR and a somewhat-broader-than-WP:RUSUKR topic ban. Thank you for getting back to me so quickly during this process. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 01:19, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
@Red-tailed hawk I'm all for second chances so hopefully they'll go and write some nice articles on less controversial bits of Ukrainian history or culture or something. Making the conditions appealable only to AN was a smart move. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 10:47, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

It's dedicated to members of the Civil Service Rifles, a regiment made up of British civil servants, who died in the First World War. It's not a huge article because everything seems to have proceeded reasonably smoothly (barring a change of architect early on), which doesn't leave any great campaign or controversy to write about."! - On vacation, so late in the day. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:28, 27 January 2024 (UTC)

Range block

Hi,

You recently placed a partial block on IPs from the 92.40. range. I don't suppose there's any chance you could whack them with something a bit heavier? Their edits are quite irksome, to say the least; I don't think they're following me around personally (although I can't rule that out completely, either), but I have bumped into them several times this week, and I'd very much rather not.

Sorry if this isn't a sensible request, I don't really understand the do's and don'ts of IP blocking, TBH.

Cheers, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 10:05, 3 February 2024 (UTC)

Blocked Vandal/Troll

I was just about to decline a UTRS appeal for Feetmucher39, an account that you blocked for vandalism and username, but Deepfriedokra beat me to it, with a much more polite decline message than I would have given. (As I get older I get nastier. I'm moving away from being the friendly person you remember from so many years ago. At least, I get less friendly to trolls, vandals, and spammers than I used to be. Maybe I'd be OK with you.) There's no question about the vandalism part of the block, but I wondered about the username part. Does it have some offensive meaning among people of a younger generation than me, that I don't know about? A quick Google didn't come up with anything. JBW (talk) 20:49, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

Meh. . Me too -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 21:42, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
Meh indeed. The username looks a reference to foot fetishism, but is very much a side issue. I wouldn't block an account with a username like that if they were editing constructively. As for being polite, my dear Watson, certainly some of these people deserve nothing from us but contempt but usually we just want them to go away so it's rarely a good idea to feed the troll. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:27, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
Indeed again. I'm trying to cut back on my contempt at UTRS. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 22:42, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
Yes, I agree. What I had in mind was not being directly rude, which would be feeding the troll, but just making a plain factual blunt statement, rather than one of the standard boilerplate messages, which are written in a more AGF-tone than I feel is necessary. I think that giving an answer which gives the troll a polite and detailed explanation of the situation, taking them more seriously than they deserve, can be another form of feeding, perhaps even more so than telling them to fuck off. However, it's likely that in most cases it actually doesn't make much difference which way we do it. JBW (talk) 23:10, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

Need to be alert

Hey, HJ, just a quick heads up, that user you just blocked says that he's going to create an alt, so I suspect some sockpuppetry going around. Is it possible to keep an eye out for any confirmed accounts? Thanks.

P.S.: You look pretty cool in those photos bro. NoobThreePointOh (talk) 23:45, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

@NoobThreePointOh the last IP they used is automatically blocked which will make it a little bit more difficult. It doesn't take a lot of know-how to get round that, but we can deal with that if or when it happens. Most vandals aren't that smart, or at least not that persistent. And thanks! I like to put a human face to things! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:55, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
@HJ Mitchell Sure thing. I just got a teeny bit nervous, but I know there are some good checkusers like you. NoobThreePointOh (talk) 23:57, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

Vandalism intervention

Hi @HJ Mitchell, I'm turning to you briefly because you took part in the discussion and you obviously know a lot about it. I was worried that the user's behavior would not be viewed as basic vandalism. However, I don't know which way makes the most sense to deal with it. The user has made countless edits that do not improve the articles, but rather worsen them and are more likely to be spam. Unfortunately, as far as I know, as a normal user, I cannot effectively reset these edits. Do you perhaps have an idea what is the best way to solve this?

Link to the discussion: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism&diff=prev&oldid=1206710797 Bildersindtoll (talk) 14:49, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

@Bildersindtoll I'm not quite sure what you're asking. I blocked that user. Generally, if the edits the edits are so obviously vandalism that anyone could see the problem, the editor should receive some sort of warning so that they understand that their edits worked and were disruptive, then you can report them to AIV if they continue. If it's not blatantly obvious, you should explain what the problem is. If it's not vandalism but still a problem, WP:ANI might be more appropriate. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:03, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick reply. :) Sorry for the misunderstanding. It's about what I can do about all the user's edits. These are still there and I cannot revert them because other edits are already done by other users. Example: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=1._FC_Magdeburg&action=history Bildersindtoll (talk) 15:13, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
@Bildersindtoll click "undo" next to them in the history. If that doesn't work, you'll have to edit them out manually. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:20, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
Ok, thank you. Bildersindtoll (talk) 15:23, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

Cluebot Awakener

Title probably gives them more of a pedestal than they deserve. I've noticed for a good couple months a long term abuse of IPs spamming the phrase "COME ON!!! CLUEB*T NG!!! WAKE UP NOW!!!" all over Wikipedia, despite several blocks, all coming from different IPs (just today, this one and this one) You can tell they're all the same person, as for some reason they all include Japanese RPGs in their talk page. I can't seem to find anything on the active cases list of LTA'ers regarding this person, unless I just can't find it. Is this worth investigating? Thanks in advance. Synorem (talk) 12:16, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

@Synorem they've been at it for a while. I don't know if they have a name but I'd be reluctant to give them one because we don't want to feed the troll. The edits are obvious enough that they should just be blocked (or reported to AIV) on sight. They're obviously using some very dynamic IPs on some big ranges so it's a game of whack a mole. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:33, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
@HJ Mitchell I also had to deal with that almost every single day that I'm on AntiVandal. I just keep seeing them continuously spamming it and it just makes me lose brain cells. NoobThreePointOh (talk) 12:38, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
Just report them straight to AIV as soon as you see them. Warning them is obviously a waste of time and any admin should know what to do with it. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:47, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
Yeah. All I hope is that someone comes to the rescue and blocks the entire range. NoobThreePointOh (talk) 12:54, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
@NoobThreePointOhthat would just exclude lots of innocent people and our friend would likely be back on a new range within a few minutes otherwise I would have done it. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:23, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

Block extension on 58.69.117.149

Hi HJ Mitchell,

Do you reckon the block on the IP address 58.69.117.149 should be extended from 31h, given it was blocked for longer period (1 week) before, the vandalism resumed right after the expiration of that block, and there haven't been any recent constructive edits from that address? — AP 499D25 (talk) 12:59, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

@AP 499D25 it's a proxy but there are loads of proxies on the range so I've made some wider range blocks. The 31h on the single IP was just to stop the immediate disruption. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:01, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
Oh okay, thank you. — AP 499D25 (talk) 13:05, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

Duck!

Same deletion within an hour of Omvic Comms' permablock.   –Skywatcher68 (talk) 16:02, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

@Skywatcher68 that block was for the username alone and {{softerblock}} encourages them to create a new account. COI or other issues will have to be dealt with separately but I'd suggest starting by trying to talk to them. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:07, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
Okay, done.   –Skywatcher68 (talk) 16:16, 21 February 2024 (UTC)

Please Be More Careful When Reverting

Your block of Ylmla

This user has been reported to UAA before here: [6], and was declined by ScottishFinnishRadish here: [7]. ClumsyOwlet (talk) 00:31, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
@ClumsyOwlet I saw both the UAA and AIV reports but it wasn't clear that this was impersonation straight away. Checkuser evidence makes it abundantly clear that the user was not acting in good faith. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 10:49, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi HJ

Hi HJ, Hey, I want to talk about the block for repeated genre warring. I understand that it was very wrong of me but I've come here to talk. I want to keep making genre edits with reliable sources. It's something I like to do on my free time. And the thing is, I'm not trying to vandalize Wikipedia, I just want to make edits. The reason why I did replace genres like the one on "Russians" by Sting was because there wasn't a reliable genre source and I replaced it with a sourced one. But I didn't realize that was wrong. I promise that I'll find a way to see if the source is reliable by asking someone, or unless there's another way to find out if a source is reliable. Reach out to me when you can. IP block of 50.203.254.248

Hello! I saw you just blocked IP 50.203.254.248 after I reported them at AIV. I'd like to say that I was wrong about them having a level 4 warning. AntiVandal seemed to think so, but I just installed that program yesterday, so I probably interpreted it incorrectly. Sorry about that! —asparagusus (interaction) sprouts! 16:21, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

@Asparagusus it's fine. That IP has a long history (hence the long block), and it's not necessary to give four warnings anyway. Two should be more than sufficient. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:30, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

This redirect has been fully protected since April 2023. Is that really still needed? I think it has probably been long enough to unprotect it, or at least try semi-protection. QuicoleJR (talk) 14:45, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

@QuicoleJR normally I'd be willing to drop something like this down to ECP but in this case and with this subject I'm afraid the answer is oh hell no. Bloody gamergate is still toxic ten years on! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:01, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
Understandable, I just assumed that a redirect would be less likely to be targeted. Thanks. QuicoleJR (talk) 16:07, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
Redirects tend to be less watched and they only need infrequent maintenance. And the target article is fully protected, which increases the temptation of the redirect for malicious users. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:35, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

Your block of 2003:EA:4F07:87FC:0:0:0:0/64 for tripping edit filter

@Skywatcher68 I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to say. Could you explain? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:59, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
I'm saying that blocking someone for triggering the edit filter doesn't make sense when their primary reason for being here is to repeatedly revert one specific editor.   –Skywatcher68 (talk) 18:21, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
