Using MMS for FAR notices

I saw you were trying to use MMS for FAR notifications. Were you successful? I've finally gotten the hang of it, so if you need help, let me know. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:18, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Sandy! No, I wasn't, I ended up doing it the old-fashioned way and opening 9 tabs and pasting the message. Have you documented your success anywhere for next time I need it? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:27, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I did ... but I'm heading out for an app't, and will have to remember where to find it ... ping me if I forget to get back to you ... SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:20, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Here you go ... I pounded it out kinda quickly, so let me know after you next do one if I missed anything or any clarification is needed:

Bst, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 17:38, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Thanks! I'll follow it next time I do an FAR, which isn't very often but often enough that speeding up the process is helpful! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:42, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

AIV

You're crushing it today. I keep checking after closing an RFC to get a quick mindless palette cleanser and find at every contribs page I open you've already taken care of it. Thanks for the hard work. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 22:42, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

@ScottishFinnishRadish Thanks, but Tamzin and Widr seem to be beating me to more than I'm getting! Unusually busy for a Saturday, though. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:43, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
It definitely seems busier than usual. I figured it'd be a good day to try and close more old RFCs since the weekends are normally pretty quiet. Luckily, many hands make light work, and I was able to focus on foreskins. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 22:56, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Sounds like fun! I'm trying to write some articles that have been on my to-do list for ages and using AIV to procrastinate! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:06, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

@Drmies any time. I prefer puppies though! ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:28, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
They're pretty cute, I have to admit.

Sorry man. Listen, I'm cooking. Did we (Europeans) eat chicken thighs? I don't remember my mom ever cooking them, or them being in the store. We had breasts ("filet"), but what happened to the rest? Was it just whole chicken legs that people roasted? I get thighs all the time (and so does Cullen328, apparently), but it seems such an un-Dutch thing to eat, at least for my generation. Drmies (talk) 00:06, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

I recommend the beautiful book Art of the Chicken by Jacques Pépin. It is illustrated by Pépin's own paintings of chickens and plenty of recipes for egg dishes and chicken dishes. But not a single Dutch chicken dish, sadly. Cullen328 (talk) 01:56, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Not my area of expertise but I'd imagine the thighs were eaten by the less well off after the rich were done with the "good" bits. Possibly in a stew or a casserole. I wouldn't have thought people would have wasted a whole chicken, especially in lean times. But not my area of expertise. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 10:11, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Oh I'm sure no one would have wasted it; I just wonder where they went. Did your mother cook chicken thighs? Did she cook breasts? Did she cook whole chickens? Drmies (talk) 13:40, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
In casseroles or stews sometimes. The thighs are considered "cheap meat", at least in England in my experience. I might use them for things that don't need the "good" meat, for example if they're being cooked in a sauce. Although there's not much difference in price these days between thighs and breasts. A whole chicken is reserved for a Sunday roast (if you've got a big family to feed). @SchroCat or @Worm That Turned probably know more about food history than I do. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:12, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
How did you sickos jump from "a kitten" to casseroles and stews?? - SchroCat (talk) 14:48, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
That reminds me of one of the most controversial redirects in Wikipedia history! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:51, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
Not one of those from the admin that was redirecting "boobies" and the like, I hope...? - SchroCat (talk) 14:55, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
BTW, I've looked through a couple of old cookery books, back to Apicius, through Fettiplace, Glasse, Raffald, Acton, Rundell, etc, (as well as some French ones 'cos they seem to know a bit about cooking). Most of them talk about preparing whole chickens (unsurprising: these were books for and about cooking in the finer houses), but when they discuss breaking it down, it's always a split between the suprême and 'the rest' (one example is Maria Rundell's work which has two recipes to use a whole chicken: Chicken Panda - not what you think - with the white meat and a broth with the dark meat - others just talk about "the leg" of thigh and drumstick). Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 16:35, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
ps. Delighted to see this. Good luck. - SchroCat (talk) 23:55, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

Thanks, Kevin. I'm not sure I'm delighted, but that means a lot coming from you actually. I'll have a look at your slides when I get chance. How was WCNA? The idea of a European equivalent has been mooted and is something I'd love to help make happen. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:25, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
I really enjoyed WCNA! It was the first Wikipedia conference I'd been to in a few years, and it was great to see some old faces. A pan-Europe wikiconference? Sounds fun! I can't help out directly since I'm actually on the committee that funds conferences, but it sounds like a great idea to me as long as it doesn't duplicate other European conferences in scope. Can this really be the man who used to slap blocks of 1001 days on editors? A 31 hour block for an IP address which has been the source of exactly the same kind of disruptive editing, clearly from one person, for two and a half months? JBW (talk) 22:25, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

@JBW I still do the 1001-day blocks. But I almost always start at 31 hours for a first block for trivial vandalism but I leave them on my watchlist and I'll reblock for rapidly escalating durations if they don't get the hint (my usual pattern for escalation is 31h>a week>a month>six months>a year>1001 days, but I'll happily skip steps if necessary). Advice re Landmark Worldwide

Hi Harry, I would appreciate your advice in respect of the recent burst of activity on the Landmark Worldwide page, as it seems to involve multiple violations of the Arbitrators' conclusions in the [[1]] arbitration case, and you were the Admin who applied the protection on 5th March 2015 after the close of that case.

There have been repeated instances of edit warring, wholesale instant reversions, refusal to discuss matters on the talk page, personal attacks, and failure to remain civil or Assume Good Faith.

I can go into far more detail if you would like, but a quick glance at talk:Landmark Worldwide, and at the edit history of the article over the past 5 weeks will give you an idea of my concerns.

This activity was initiated by Polygnotus with a posting on the NPOV noticeboard [2]], where he starts by describing LM as a 'weird cult', and yet repeatedly claims to have no interest or knowledge on the topic. But enough, apparently, to make about a dozen edits, and post 65 comments on the talk page in the past month!

He also seems to be wikihounding me, and has posted 8 aggressive comments on my talk page.

Thank you. DaveApter (talk) 11:14, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Quick question

Is it possible to nominate an article for both WP:FA and WP:GA? If not, then what is the right procedure? Thank you. dxneo (talk) 12:49, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) A featured article will replace good article, if it is there. WP:FA says many of them were good articles at one point but not all of them. They don't have to have previously been good articles, then, from what I understand. So, you could nominate one for GA, and then FA, or just nominate it for FA, if you think it's good enough. Hope this answers your question! -- ThatOneWolf (ChatEdits 15:08, 25 November 2023 (UTC)
ThatOneWolf, so if I've already nominated Mass Country for GA, then I'll have to wait til consensus is reached before I can nominate it for FA? dxneo (talk) 22:27, 25 November 2023 (UTC)
@Dxneo You'll either need to wait for a GA review to conclude or withdraw the GA nomination. GA can be hit and miss but if you get a good reviewer the feedback can be well worth the wait and can make sure the article is looking its best for FAC. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:58, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

Regarding your answer: 1) Please point me at where you think "roving bands of editors who turn up in every infobox discussion" are active, because I haven't seen them. We even had years without discussions, remember? 2) I wonder what you'd expect from a sitewide consensus, when the conflict is not sitewide - everybody reading Wikipedia can easily see that infoboxes are almost everywhere - but local: they are contentious only in a small corner of subjects, in articles by a small group of editors. I met the disputes in 2012, for Samuel Barber (where I opposed for redundancy, but understood within a day that the redundancy serves readers with different needs). Brian Boulton added a compromise to Chopin as a RfC result in 2015. I thought that would settle it, dreamer that I am ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:51, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:31, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Contentious topics help

HJ, I was wondering if you could help me out. I try to avoid arbitration enforcement completely, but I stumbled onto a problem in the Arab-Israeli conflict topic that I am now floundering in. It concerns a brand new editor, Udnciemd93749 and two related articles, Harvard Law Review and Apsara Iyer (president of the Harvard Law Review). Neither article is directly related to the A-I topic, but the content being edited is.

I believe that the editor should not be permitted to edit the material in the articles because they are not extended-confirmed. I left a CT alert on their Talk page a few minutes ago (it took me a while to find the template), and I reverted the two edits they made on the articles, restoring the related material. I have also left a personalized warning on the editor's Talk page.

Are my warnings right? Do I need to put templates on the two article Talk pages, something about "related content" I vaguely recall? I want to make sure I've covered all the bases if I believe the editor should later be sanctioned.

Sorry this is so rambling. Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 14:49, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

@Bbb23 Hey! You're correct that that editor does not have the standing to make those edits. The templates you're thinking of are {{Contentious topics/talk notice}}. You also have the option of EC protecting the articles (though you'd have to log that at WP:AELOG) as a less personal response. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:18, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. The editor I mentiioned has not edited either article. However, an even newer editor has been editing Harvard Law Review only. They haven't been removing the material, just editing it, but the same problem exists. Before going out to lunch, I slapped a notice on their Talk page, which they ignored. I then reverted their subsequent edits, gave them a final warning, and put the notice you pointed me to on the article itself.
More questions. Given that I reverted them, can I still block them? It's a bit like reverting vandalism - I don't think WP:INVOLVED applies, but I don't feel like getting in trouble while trying to protect the encyclopedia. Same question as to adding ECB protection on the article. Finally, if I do add protection, how long? It's not like it's an A-I article. I was thinking a week and then seeing if things quiet down.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:10, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
A week would be reasonable. It'll all be forgotten at some point. I wouldn't say you're involved just for reverting the rdits. You're just enforcing the restrictions, not passing judgement on the subject matter. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 10:25, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

Autopatrolled

Hello HJ Mitchell, I hope you're doing well. Could you please review my contributions and consider granting me Autopatrolled rights? If not, I appreciate any feedback or suggestions you may have. Thank you for your consideration. C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 14:21, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

@C1K98V At a glance, you more than meet the numerical criteria. But I'm concerned that your articles don't contain a lot of prose and you often create articles with empty sections and don't seem to go back to flesh them out later. That tells me perhaps a second look at your creations is worthwhile, and doesn't tell me that you have the understanding of the nuances of policy that—should you start writing about politicians or athletes, for example—your articles would be clean enough not to need a second glance. So I'm afraid the answer is a no from me at the moment. I'd happily reconsider if you started writing more substantial articles without empty sections (even a sentence or two for a brief synopsis is better than nothing) and ideally fully formatted your references so readers can identify the source. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:47, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for looking into my request. I understand if you are not able to grant me the Autopatrol rights at the moment. No problem. To be honest, I don't mind getting my creations reviewed by a second eye. However, I have made a mistake in the past with copyright violation, and I am grateful to the community for giving me the chance to address the issue. I have learned my lesson that I am not competent in writing plot, synopsis, and reception sections, and I do not intend to work in these areas. Does it appears that the references used in my creations are not properly formatted? I will work on improving my past creations, and I value your feedback and suggestions. — C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 16:59, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
The main issue with your references is that they don't list works/publishers so a reader can't tell at a glance where the information came from. Try using the Wikipedia:RefToolbar and fill in as many of the fields as you can (if you click the little magnifying glass it might fill some of them in for you). HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:03, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
When creating an article, I like to use the Citation Bot and Refill Toolforge to expand the references. I have also learned about IABot, which is used to create an archive link for the references. I was wondering if Reftoolbar works in a similar manner? — C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 17:19, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

IP block evasion

Hi HJ Mitchell, recently you blocked the User:W688 account after a report I made at UAA. The exact external link that it added to an article is this one. Seems to me like a website that is selling a service, at the very least none of the content in it looks relevant to the subject of the article.

Just today, an IP address 112.199.123.202 reverted my edit to reinstate that external link on the article. Should we enable autoblock for the account (or block the IP)? — AP 499D25 (talk) 05:28, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

Followup: I have reverted the IP's edits twice by now, but they just reverted me for the third time (diff). I'll leave it to you to decide if this is spam or not as I'm at three reverts for that exact external link addition. The 3RRNO exemption #8 states Reverting unambiguous spam, where the content would be eligible for page deletion under criterion G11 if it were a standalone page., however the IP's addition is just a single external link, to the page number of a reference apparently, rather than a complete writing of spam.

Seems to me like they googled for "W688" for something to spam their website under, which led them to that Wikipedia article, thus adding in the link to try and get a higher presence in search engine rankings.

The user has been warned with a level 2 warning for adding spam links, alongside a previous notice about the use of IP addresses to evade blocks of accounts to repeat disruptive edits. The latest diff above comes after this lvl 2 warning. — AP 499D25 (talk) 09:52, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

@AP 499D25 I've hard blocked the IP. Hopefully they'll get the hint. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 10:03, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks!
Would 3RRNO exemtion #8 apply to undoing that edit? I haven't reverted it yet. — AP 499D25 (talk) 10:07, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
I'd have thought so, yes. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 10:13, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, done. I thought you assumed good faith towards that User:W688 account, as you had placed a soft block rather than a hard one. — AP 499D25 (talk) 10:19, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
I did assume good faith. They only added one link and it was related to their username, so they got a soft block. They obviously didn't get the hint that their edit was problematic because they made it again, even after a spam warning. Hopefully the IP block will get their attention. @C1K98V I'm not HJ Mitchell, but I am an editor who's been around for more than a year and used the various user misconduct resolution methods several times before (e.g. AIV, ANI, ANEW), and got a good understanding of them. Looking at that report of yours, it seems like the edits the user made did not fall into what's considered "obvious vandalism". I'm going to assume good faith and think that the user reverted the page move because they disagreed with taking out the disambiguating terms in parentheses in the article title. Their reasoning of "reverting deliberate vandalism and abuse by last editor" does seem very inappropriate for that move revert however.
Since you made a bold move and they have reverted it, the next thing you'll need to do if you want to continue with this, is start a requested move on the article talk page, with an explanation of why you think it should be moved to the title without the parentheses.
If you think there's a serious misconduct issue with the user, then there is Wikipedia:Administrators' Noticeboard/Incidents (ANI), for user conduct disputes. Note that in cases where there is not immediate and obvious misconduct, ANI is only to be used if the user continues editing disruptively after you have engaged in (or tried to engage in) article talk page discussion with them, as well as trying out the other content dispute resolution methods if appropriate.
Hope that helps a lot. — AP 499D25 (talk) 10:41, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
AP 499D25, It is not required (don't want to increase unnecessary workload for page movers) to open a move request, as it is clear that there should not be any disambiguation since there is only one Wikipedia article on the topic. Yes, this is a serious misconduct by the user. As I have also been blamed and abused at the same time. If you want, you can refer to my talk page and check the history. But as HJ Mitchell, declined my request, it may be due to posting it at the wrong venue or their belief that it was my fault. — C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 11:08, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
@C1K98V you can take it to ANI if you want but you're better off ignoring the rudeness and proceeding via RM. Getting into a move war won't do anyone any good. I've left some advice for the other editor though. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:29, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

AP Permission

This is another legit account of QuadriSyedSahab, i requested for Autopatrolled but you declined by stating about a SPI, where i was taken without any proofs and I wasn’t blocked also. I just clear that I’m not a Sockpuppet of any user, I’m an independent user. I am contributing about Sufism in India, a vast subject which was never attended by anyone. Look at my contributions pls, if you don’t want to give the permission just have a small look. Thanks — Syed A. Hussain Quadri (talk) 14:49, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

Open Proxies

Hi,

I know you have seen me reporting open proxies to AIV, the main list I use is WP:Open proxy detection. Would you be fine with me handing you a big list of OPs on this page so you can block them? Seawolf35 T--C 19:23, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

@Seawolf35 if they have recent edits here, especially unhelpful edits, then absolutely. If they haven't been used here recently I'm usually content to let the experts handle it as and when. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:25, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
Ok, I might go find a checkuser or somebody who knows IPs and the works very well and dump the list on them. Cheers, Seawolf35 T--C 20:26, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

Today's story is about Maria Callas, on her centenary. - Aaron Copland died OTD, and Jerome Kohl (mentioned in November) said something wise on Copland's talk, - yes, regarding a soft(er) stance towards infoboxes. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:47, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

Did you check out the history of the infobox of Callas? Compare Jessye Norman, Kathleen Ferrier and Jenny Lind. Did you check out the history of Copland? Compare Max Reger, Max Beckschäfer, Colin Mawby (from today's story), and Benjamin Britten (who died OTD). What's the difference? If what you see changes your answer to my question, feel free to change, and ping me. I would like to see a way to avoid in the future hundreds of editors commenting on Mozart RfCs, just to kind of restore the infobox he had in 2006. Happy new era ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:35, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Why I said I felt bullied at Talk:A Christmas Carol

In the whole process, SchroCat has talked down to me. He refused to listen to the perfectly legit reasons I had for that information being in the article. And as soon as others agreed with him, he started shoving it in my face. And this wouldn't be anywhere near the first time he's acted like that. When I warned SchroCat about it, he replied Don't come to my talk page and lie. pbp 20:52, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

@Purplebackpack89 that's not an accurate summary of the situation. SchroCat was possibly a little less friendly than I would have been if this dispute was over one of my FAs but all of his comments on the talk page have been related to the article's content. You have taken the discussion to user talk pages, personalised the dispute, addressed him by a term he explicitly asked you not to, and added unneeded sarcasm. You would have been better off making your case politely but sometimes you have to accept that consensus is against you. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:14, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
And the part where SchroCat accused me of lying? pbp 21:29, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
PBP, I apologise for the comment, but your rather incendiary warning claiming I had made a personal attack and the edit summary "this guy's been attacking and bullying people for years and darned if he's going to bully me now" were not true - or at least as far as I am concerned. I have made no personal attacks on the Christmas Carol talk page, but if you think I have, then I must have phrased something so badly that it's gone beyond my original meaning and into something I still can't see, even after re-reading the whole thread several times. I am sorry if there is anything there you think is a personal attack, but that was not my intent at any stage. - SchroCat (talk) 21:35, 4 December 2023 (UTC) ps. Don't worry: I don't think this is you - it's an obvious troll trying to make mischief, nothing else. - SchroCat (talk) 22:05, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
PBP, you lost a content dispute, attacked the editor you disagreed with, and you expect what, sunshine and rainbows in response? You need to at the very least acknowledge your role if you want to criticise another editor's conduct. But why not take a breath, try to take the heat out of the situation, and make a suggestion for an edit you feel would improve the article. Consensus might still be against you but I'm sure nobody minds a nice, calm discussion about the content. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:48, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Request

Dear HJ Mitchell, Hello, I'm created 28 articles releated to Indian politicians, and those are biography and they fullfill all creteria of WP:BLP but I have not an autopatrollers right, can you grant me this right after reviewing my article?. 😊~~ αvírαm|(tαlk) 15:54, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

No. I think you're hat collecting. You already have just about every right it's possible to get without being an admin. There is no way you're patrolling new articles, patrolling recent changes, working at RM, *and* writing immaculate articles. Autopatrolled exists solely to help NPP, not the editor so this refusal will have no effect on your editing. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:41, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

Please block this LTA IP address. It's completely chaos.

Hello @HJ Mitchell, please block this block evasion/LTA IP address:

145.255.9.32 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log)

This IP address has kept spamming & adding unsourced information on multiple Disney related articles for the past few hours. No matter how many times I revert, the IP address will undo it no matter what. This is likely a block evasion of IP address User talk:136.169.173.251, which you blocked for a year. I've already reported this to the WP:AIV and the WP:ANI, however no answer. Your help will be appreciated. 🛧Midori No Sora♪🛪 ( ☁=☁=✈) 13:51, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Also, could you please take a look at what this IP address is doing at the Wikipedia:Edit filter/False positives/Reports. 🛧Midori No Sora♪🛪 ( ☁=☁=✈) 13:58, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
IP editor from Bashkortostan in the past used to add unsourced content to Disney Channel (Scandinavian TV channel), Disney Channel (Russian TV channel) and Discovery Science (European TV channel). (diff 1, diff 2, diff 3) --LDM2003 talk to me! 14:05, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
I've blocked the IP for 31 hours for disruptive editing. The edits aren't actually that disruptive, though. Is there a major difference between "co-produced" and "produced and distributed"? And if there is, why isn't it cited in the article? You've given me no evidence at all that this is an LTA or block evasion (the other IP you mentioned is not blocked and I've never blocked it; it was blocked briefly in August). I saw the AIV report and didn't think it was actionable; many other reports were actioned in that time so I'm guessing other admins thought likewise. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:01, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
@HJ Mitchell, I may have misread the IP address block. The IP address "range" was blocked by you for one year [3]. 🛧Midori No Sora♪🛪 ( ☁=☁=✈) 15:15, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
OK, that makes more sense. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:17, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Possible G4

Hello HJ! I was wondering if you could take a look at the deleted version of King Saha and let me know if it would be valid for a G4 deletion. As I'm not an admin I can't really do so, so I was hoping you'd be able to let me know. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 15:59, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

@Blaze Wolf my speedies are predominantly G11 so I'm not an expert in how it's interpreted but if someone forced me to look at that one I'd probably send it for another AfD. The latest version is a little bit more substantial than the last version that was deleted—the structure is largely the same but the sections are each a few sentences longer. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:07, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
Sounds good! Thanks for the response. ― Blaze WolfTalkblaze__wolf 16:22, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi

I mailed you the next day after you replied 2 weeks ago, once I knew it's okay to work on sending and shaping short explanations; and another to ask a week ago. So I want to make sure it was sent, and if you can advise-reply there. Thank you. אומנות (talk) 18:30, 10 December 2023 (UTC)

I asked you to send me links and you didn't. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:38, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
I did... I sent one of 5 links with short explanations, though few minutes afterwards I sent another separate link-less one to further explain my difficulty and personal hurt as to why I turn on mail. Maybe you only saw the last one, or the first wasn't sent? Anyway I'm sorry for the mixup. If you can't see it, I will copy paste and send this specific message. It's on my mail. Thanks again. :-) אומנות (talk) 19:06, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
I sent again, this time directly to the mail address and not in the 2 previous messages chain. Please let me know if you received. אומנות (talk) 23:32, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
If you found the previous message, I wasn't sure, so sent again, and at this chance also shaped the message a bit further and added few sentences for recent-days developments going further complex on that same route, with 2 more links. I understand it can take time to review, just please let me know if you see it. Thank you. אומנות (talk) 23:36, 10 December 2023 (UTC)

Can you tell me HJ Mitchell - if you have access today (when you're on Wikipedia) to email as well? If so, can you look for a sec today for the content with explanations and links which I worked on further yesterday, as from what I wrote and thought I managed to send 2 weeks ago? This way I'll know not to wait more days to ask and realize it wasn't sent again, and I'll know to wait for an advise for if/what is most safe to proceed, also for my calmness, when you'll get available to address the message itself. אומנות (talk) 19:07, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello, would you mind temporarily semi-protecting Don Knotts and doing some revdel of the clearly defamatory remarks? There seems to be an LTA attacking the page. — MATRIX! (a good person!)[citation unneeded] 21:23, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

@Matrix I've blocked the IP and I'm watching the article. I'll protect it if necessary but they'll just move to a different article. I don't think you can defame someone who's been dead for nearly 18 years. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:29, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Your block of User:Nupter1234

Hello, I had User talk:Nupter1234 on my watchlist, and I noticed that you blocked them definitely for vandalism. Their only contributions so far were to their user page and what seemed to me as a good-faith attempt at creating an article (permalink). I was wondering if you could explain your reasoning further. Or maybe there is a socking/LTA issue that I'm not aware of. Thanks :) Thriftycat TalkContribs 20:54, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

@Thriftycat They came through AIV for repeatedly triggering the edit filter, specifically by blanking pages (or a page, the Free Russia redirect). HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:00, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Ah okay sorry, forgot to check the filter log Thriftycat TalkContribs 21:02, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
I'm seeing that too. I could see that as a first step in trying to make that redirect into an article. If I and Thrifty keep an eye on their contribs moving forward, would you be comfortable with an unblock? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 21:03, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
@Firefangledfeathers I assumed it was some sort of ethno-nationalist POV pushing, but if I'm wrong and you think they have something to offer, please feel free. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:05, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Oof. I don't know if I'd go as far as "have something to offer", but I'll give it a shot. Starting with some dialogue at their user talk and we'll see what happens. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 21:11, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

Thankfully they're not very subtle so if they return again they're likely to be blocked for spamming again though perhaps a friendly neighbourhood checkuser might care to dig deeper? @Kevin was the last one hit my watchlist... HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:29, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

Autopatrolled with bogus sources

Hello HJ Mitchell: I see you recently granted autopatrolled to Tumbuka Arch. You might be interested in the discussion I opened at User talk:Tumbuka Arch#Bogus_sources. Articles like Evariste Niyonkuro, with sources published before any event described in the article are obviously not valid, and these articles do not belong to mainspace, especially since some of them might be BLP (even if the article talks about them in past tense, there's no death date, and if they are alive, that's a violation of BLP on its own). MarioGom (talk) 17:26, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello HJ Mitchell,

I'll copy this here because finding 6 mentions your partial block.

An arbitration case, Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Industrial agriculture, has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

  • Leyo and KoA are prohibited from interacting with, or commenting on, each other anywhere on Wikipedia (subject to the ordinary exceptions). This restriction may be appealed twelve months after the enactment of this remedy, and every twelve months thereafter.
  • Leyo is admonished for battleground behavior, personal attacks, and use of administrator tools while INVOLVED. Leyo is INVOLVED in the topic area of genetically modified organisms, industrial agriculture, commercially produced agricultural chemicals, the effects of all three, and organizations or companies involved, broadly construed. Future instances of this kind of conduct may result in sanction, including removal of adminship, without warning, especially if it is INVOLVED tool use.
  • KoA is warned for edit warring and is reminded to engage in good faith when resolving their disputes.

Edit summary suppression

Hi Harry, please could you suppress the most recent offensive edit summary on Silicon dioxide (revision id 1191769141). Cheers and Happy Christmas. Polyamorph (talk) 19:45, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Polyamorph, I don't think it meets any of the criteria for either suppression (oversight) or revision deletion. It's a mildly offensive personal attack but doesn't seem to be directed any identifiable person so it's closer to "ordinary incivility", which is explicitly excluded from the criteria. Also, there may come a time when the community needs to review the IP's conduct for example and deleting the edit summary would make that harder. In general, I think revdel is massively overused for run-of-the-mill stuff . I wouldn't be surprised if another admin has already deleted it before I've finished typing but I don't think there's a basis in policy to do so. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:57, 25 December 2023 (UTC)

2024 Arbitration Committee

The Arbitration Committee welcomes the following new and returning arbitrators following their election by the community. The two-year terms of these arbitrators formally begin on 1 January 2024:

Upon meeting the Wikimedia Foundation's criteria for access to non-public personal data and signing the Foundation's non-public information confidentiality agreement, all incoming arbitrators will be subscribed to all Committee-managed email lists, assigned the CheckUser and Oversight permissions for use in office, and given access to the CheckUser and Oversight queues on the VRTS system.

We also thank our outgoing colleagues whose terms end on 31 December 2023:

Outgoing arbitrators are eligible to retain the CheckUser and Oversight permissions, to remain active on cases accepted before their term ended, and to remain subscribed to the functionaries' and arbitration clerks' mailing lists following their term on the committee. To that effect:

  • Stewards are requested to remove the permission(s) noted from the following outgoing arbitrators, who have not elected to retain them, after 31 December 2023:
    CheckUser: Enterprisey, Izno, SilkTork
    Oversight: Enterprisey, Izno, SilkTork
  • Outgoing arbitrators are eligible to remain active on cases opened before their term ended if they wish. Whether or not outgoing arbitrators will remain active on any ongoing case(s) will be noted on the proposed decision talk page of affected case(s).
  • All outgoing arbitrators will remain subscribed to the functionaries' mailing list, with the exception of Enterprisey, who has elected to be unsubscribed.
  • All outgoing arbitrators will be unsubscribed from the clerks-l mailing list, with the exception of Izno, who has elected to remain subscribed.
