DYK for BeReal

On 11 May 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article BeReal, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that BeReal, a social media app, purportedly makes everyone look boring? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/BeReal. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, BeReal), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Congratulations, Ganesha811! The article you nominated, Mary Jane Richardson Jones, has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best articles on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.
This is a rare accomplishment and you should be proud. If you would like, you may nominate it to appear on the Main page as Today's featured article. Keep up the great work! Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) via FACBot (talk) 00:06, 30 April 2022 (UTC)

  • I have just read this very fine article, thank you for writing it so well! One of many things I appreciated was the "translation" of the value of currency, into modern values. This enables the reader to have better understanding. The fact that the Great Chicago Fire destroyed their home & business worth nearly two million dollars (vs $85,000) makes the terrible loss more understandable. Considering that Mary Jane & John arrived in Chicago with only (modern $100) is a testament to intelligence, hard work and dedication. Anyway, well done, and also the work on the John Jones expansion! Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 06:15, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was fun to research and to write - I learned a lot in the process. The adjustment to modern currency was one of the things suggested in the FA review, so credit to the reviewer who asked me to add that! Yes, they seem to have been really remarkable people - it's a bit silly, but I feel you can sense their force of personality even 150 years later via the portraits by Darling that adorn their infoboxes. —Ganesha811 (talk) 10:47, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
The portraits are very fine, it's not silly to feel that you sense their personalities, just as the artist would have sensed them. I think that's the benefit of an excellent portrait! What impresses me the most, is the photo from early 1840s/1849. It seems these are two people who know their worth, and look us straight in the eye, with a small hint of a smile. (He looks a bit more stern.)
The clothing is remarkable. The sheen of her dress and his waistcoat are due to a heavyweight silk, expensive even then. (Artificial silk wasn't invented until some decades later.) His coat and trousers appear to be fine quality wool, (displaying the sheen of fine, tightly woven wool) and very well tailored... no surprise. When he stood up, the waistcoat would still have the fashionable ruching. Her gown is lovely, an understated testament of elegance. Even in her 1883 cabinet photograph, we can see her same sense of elegant style. Sorry to be sighing over the garments, but these are a testament to their wealth/success, and give some indication of their personalities, to me at least! Again, I am so pleased to have discovered these articles, and only because you remembered me, and asked for help with some references. Best wishes, my friend, Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 05:24, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for sharing the fashion history like this - I know nothing about it, so I always find it fascinating. Happy editing to you as well! —Ganesha811 (talk) 12:48, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

Crossword review?

Hi there! I made a crossword with a "wikipedia shortcuts" theme over at user:theleekycauldron/Crossword; I wanted to take a crack at a closer-to-NYT style format. Since I'm new to this, and you've had some experience creating crosswords, I was wondering if you could take a look? Thanks in advance! theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 17:58, 16 May 2022 (UTC)

Bear in mind I actually have no expertise at all, I just enjoy making them for fun. :) I think yours is tough but doable, a nice piece of work! Do you want to use it for this month's Signpost? —Ganesha811 (talk) 21:15, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
@Ganesha811: Thanks! I just do these for fun as well :) I thought it should run in the next month's, since you're planning on tackling this month's—I just wanted to make sure it was fit to publish before I asked for too many eyes on it. Thanks, cheers! theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (she/they) 21:30, 16 May 2022 (UTC)

I have not verified your edits, but a removal of so big parts of the text without any discussion seems to me controversial. Would you please explain your edits on the Talk page?Xx236 (talk) 09:30, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

Sharing your wisdom

Dear Ganesha811,

Thanks again for approving the last wikipage I made (2021 United Nations Secretary-General selection). I greatly appreciated your feedback! I was wondering if you could share your feedback and/or approve another page I made: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Scott_Foster I try to find people working in the UN that are notable - Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Qetuadgjzcbm (talkcontribs) 11:31, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

Hello Qetuadgjzcbm; I'm a little confused, since I don't think I've ever edited or approved 2021 United Nations Secretary-General selection. It's possible you're talking to the wrong person--perhaps Mottezen is the one you want? In any case, I took a look at your draft. It's fairly well-written and comprehensive coverage. I'm not entirely convinced by it that Foster meets our notability guidelines, so that could be an issue, and it requires some attention to make sure it's written from a NPOV, and not an overly-complimentary viewpoint. I don't usually do Articles for Creation review, so I'd recommend just waiting and going through the regular process. Thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia! —Ganesha811 (talk) 11:56, 17 May 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for your swift reply! Your feedback is much appreciated. Even if you are the person I'm looking for, I still hold you in high regard! Thanks again. Qetuadgjzcbm (talk) 13:11, 18 May 2022 (UTC)

I would like to upload my photo to a friend, Mat Callahan Wikipedia page how do I do that? Thanks --AlternativeWorld55 (talk) 05:04, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello! If you took the photo yourself (and therefore own the copyright to it), you can upload it to Wikimedia Commons using the Upload Wizard. Once it's uploaded, it can then be added to a Wikipedia article. —Ganesha811 (talk) 10:58, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

I don't agree with your closure here, it should get the full week, as it is a rapidly occurring event and I don't think SNOW applies, this has a more than a snowballs chance in hell of succeeding if you let time pass. Would you please re-open it? CT55555 (talk) 16:19, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi CT55555, I see your point, but by the numbers and strength of arguments combined, I stand by the close. I don't think the rest of the week's discussion would have resulted in a different outcome. However, I'm still pretty new to closing discussions, so I wouldn't take it personally / mind if you took the close to WP:Deletion review so the rest of the community can weigh in. —Ganesha811 (talk) 17:50, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
I don't have the energy/enthusiasm to start a deletion review, I do think he benefit of time would have maybe reached a different conclusion as major global news continues to add to the event. All in the last day:

I would also like to bring up a point about your closure. While I do not disagree with the outcome, I am slightly concerned that you did SNOW closure despite a direct comment about WP:RAPID being at play, especially with 95% of the !votes being within the first 24 hours of the AfD beginning. I will not be requesting a reopening of the AfD, but I would highly recommend you do not do any further SNOW closures in the future when a WP:RAPID has been mentioned. Elijahandskip (talk) 18:57, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

That's good advice and I will bear it in mind for the future. Thank you! —Ganesha811 (talk) 19:02, 8 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi again, can you have a look at this? Not sure what happened, can you look into it? Bruxton (talk) 03:04, 1 August 2022 (UTC)
I would assume that the site lifted paragraphs from Wikipedia - it doesn't seem to be a publisher of original material. In any case, I created the page, but I didn't write any of the content on it, it was just split from existing content at James Webb Space Telescope, so we'd have to look there to find authorship and attribution. —Ganesha811 (talk) 03:46, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

New Page Reviewing

Hello, Ganesha811.

I've seen you editing recently and you seem like an experienced Wikipedia editor.
Would you please consider applying to become a New Page Reviewer? Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; currently Wikipedia needs experienced users at this task. But kindly read the tutorial before making your decision. Thanks. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 10:06, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for thinking of me - I've seen the NPP backlog and considered joining before, but have been somewhat intimidated by the high stakes and the amount of knowledge/training needed to get started. DrKay, you are confused. I didn't make that edit (diff). S C Cheese did! My edit (diff) was to the last sentence of the lead and as far as I know didn't introduce any grammatical errors. No need to be rude to me (or to them, for that matter). —Ganesha811 (talk) 20:13, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
This is your edit. Not Cheese's. DrKay (talk) 20:28, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
Oof! I made a perfectly fine edit. Someone else came along and made 3 subsequent edits, introducing grammatical errors. You decided (correctly) to revert those 3 edits, and clearly inadvertently swept up and reverted my edit as well. I reverted that, since your edit summary made no sense in the context of what I had changed, inadvertently reintroducing the grammatical errors. You could have excised the grammatical errors without including what I changed. Instead, you came to my talk page and were rude to me for no reason. Is it so hard to admit you made a mistake in your initial revert and set things to rights? —Ganesha811 (talk) 20:41, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
Comment above, by way of apology, was withdrawn by DrKay following a short ANI discussion - matter is addressed. —Ganesha811 (talk) 21:04, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

Invitation

Hi Ganesha811,

Invitation

You have been invited, along with the other participants in Wikiproject Vital Articles, to start editing the Technology page and add references. Our goal is, by September 3rd, to have the article at least to B-class, but what would be generally preferable is to improve this article to the extent that it gets to GA-status. I may post a notice to the community bulletin board, but it is not definite. I hope to see the Technology article improved! 𝙷𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚘𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚝𝚃𝚊𝚕𝚔02:47, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

The railroad

I'm sorry it took me a little longer to get started on that article, but all good things to those who wait. I hope all is well and best wishes! --A.S. Brown (talk) 07:02, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

The article is looking great, you dug up some high-quality details. Nice work. —Ganesha811 (talk) 20:31, 16 September 2022 (UTC)

September 2022

I've modified your edit to section headings at the Invasion page. The new front of the Second phase extends well beyond the Donbas towards the Odesa/Mikolaiv front. This is stated in the first section of that subsection and the old title should be maintained. ErnestKrause (talk) 12:49, 24 September 2022 (UTC)

No problem! —Ganesha811 (talk) 22:55, 24 September 2022 (UTC)

Thank you

Hi. I just wanted to say thank you for re-adding colors to the Germany coalition at German governing coalition when I requested it. It may not have been difficult to do, but I still appreciate it. Some people are quick to forget that IPs are human too, so when someone treats us with kindness and actually assumes good faith, it warms my heart. Thank you. - 87.58.119.203 (talk) 17:22, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

Glad to be helpful! If you run into any similar issues in the future, feel free to let me know. Happy editing! —Ganesha811 (talk) 18:19, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

Over Detail

Hi, I saw you removed a lot of text on the Public Image of Joe Biden wiki page, I was wondering how they would be considered over detail. I will say that Wikipedia needs to have some page describing the infamous instance where Joe Biden talk about his hairy legs since it is quite historically relevant in the realm of conservative media. As it is, the "Public Image of Joe Biden" page is an expanded article from the main Joe Biden page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:6080:1C00:5794:1D13:B52F:9943:FA3E (talk) 02:59, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

We may have different definitions of "infamous". When it comes to a figure as high-profile as the President or Vice-President of the US, they will be covered incessantly by media, and not everything they do will be notable enough to go on a Wikipedia page about their public image. If you disagree with my edit, feel free to say so on the article's talk page. —Ganesha811 (talk) 03:39, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

Inadvertent removal

Thank your for restoring my comment [1]. Unfortunately it's too late for me to recall the killer robot drone, so I suggest you take cover immediately. EEng 20:41, 29 October 2022 (UTC)

I have trained for this. —Ganesha811 (talk) 20:45, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
I've always loved that film. It's hard to pick the best moment, but it may be the point (4m28s) where the stranger with the pipe puts his arm around the teenage girl and says (in pantomime), "Hey, let's you and I go crouch down together in that windowless basement." A Dobos torte for you!

7&6=thirteen () has given you a Dobos torte to enjoy! Seven layers of fun because you deserve it.

To give a Dobos torte and spread the WikiLove, just place {{subst:Dobos Torte}} on someone else's talkpage, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend.

Thank you very much! Never had a Dobos torte before, but they sell them by the slice at the grocery near me, so I'm going to rectify this shortly. :) —Ganesha811 (talk) 15:13, 1 November 2022 (UTC)
Try it, you'll like it. 7&6=thirteen () 19:31, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

Of interest

Hey @Ganesha811! I've noticed that you've reviewed quite a few history-related articles; I'm wondering if you would be interested in reviewing Apion (family) as a good article. I nominated it in the beginning of October and its been needing a reviewer. Do you think you would be interested? GuardianH (talk) 17:40, 3 November 2022 (UTC)

I generally don't take requests, although it does look like an interesting article. I might pick it up after I close the GA review I'm currently working on, but I can't guarantee that. In any case, thanks for your hard work on it, I'm sure it will be reviewed eventually! At the moment, a one-month wait isn't exceptional, and many articles are having to wait longer. There are actually some discussions on the GA talk page about how to improve the process, so if you're interested, you could join in there. —Ganesha811 (talk) 18:16, 3 November 2022 (UTC)

Question from ContinentalXtra (04:14, 13 November 2022)

Hi. How can I quote lines directly from book in wiki? --ContinentalXtra (talk) 04:14, 13 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi! You can quote the book just like you would any other source, by using quotation marks around the book's words, "like so." Having done that, you can add the book as a reference to the end of the sentence - here's a guide on how to do that in the Visual Editor, and here's a guide on how to do it with the markup editor. If you have any issues, feel free to ask me again or ask at the Teahouse, which is a space for newer editors. —Ganesha811 (talk) 04:25, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
