Question from Kawaiigothkid (11:22, 3 September 2023)

Hi, one time I got banned when I was younger. Please report the bot that banned me. --Kawaiigothkid (talk) 11:22, 3 September 2023 (UTC)

I'm afraid I can't help without more specific information, but I can tell you that bots aren't capable of banning people on English Wikipedia. —Ganesha811 (talk) 12:15, 3 September 2023 (UTC)

Question from Xav22 (04:46, 3 September 2023)

Hello again.

How can you italicize an article title? I have checked out the Template:Italic title way and all, but when I put it in for the name I am told it uses an unsupported character which is the {. I can't find any videos on it either. Any help appreciated, thanks. --Xav22 (talk) 04:46, 3 September 2023 (UTC)

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! You should not create an article about yourself, or anyone else you know - that would be a violation of our conflict-of-interest policy. If you are interested in editing Wikipedia, you should start by making small changes (with good sources) to articles that already exist. Question from Writerfromgodsowncountry (19:15, 17 September 2023)

Why my article is not published --Writerfromgodsowncountry (talk) 19:15, 17 September 2023 (UTC)

Hello! Are you referring to Draft:Our Lady of Lourdes Knanaya Catholic Forane Church, Madampam, Kannur? It looks like the reviewer declined it because of a lack of reliable sources. Wikipedia articles are based on high-quality, detailed sources from reliable publishers. They can be books, newspapers, websites, any form - but they have to be reputable and trustworthy! Try and address this issue by editing the article and then resubmit it when you are confident it is ready. —Ganesha811 (talk) 22:06, 17 September 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello Ganesha811,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

I posed new information I discovered online and the comment has been removed. Why and did I do something incorrect? --Rondofanboy (talk) 17:29, 8 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello! As the other user mentioned, your addition needed an independent, reliable source, as a citation. If an independent source reports on Rondo's return, that could definitely be added to the article with the necessary citation. Your username may also give other Wikipedians the impression that you have a vested interest in promoting Rondo, or a COI. It's not a bad thing to have a particular interest, but it just means you should be careful in your editing to avoid giving off the appearance of promotionalism or bias. Happy editing! —Ganesha811 (talk) 19:03, 8 October 2023 (UTC)

I wanted to say thanks for stepping up and requesting the mop. That's great work! The manuscript thing is really an excellent catch. It's lucky for us that most trolls and vandals are both stupid and easily bored, because it makes them easy to catch and divert. But I think we have had some very dedicated hoaxers on Wikipedia over the years, and not all of them have yet been caught. Worse yet, some of them may have been able to will their creations into reality through citogenesis. Thanks for doing what you do; I'm very touched that the things I've worked on inspired you here. —Ganesha811 (talk) 20:34, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

Kit Rachlis edits

Hi Ganesha811: I'm hoping for some clarification on the appropriate tone for documenting Kit Rachlis's record as a magazine editor. You've made a number of revisions to information you didn't consider sufficiently neutral or encyclopedic, a goal of Wikipedia's that I appreciate. But I'm struggling to understand how it might be objectionable to document the impact that an editor has had on a publication -- what was accomplished under his or her tenure -- and how they shaped the careers of the writers on their team. Mentioning an award, linking to a meaningful story; why is that not encyclopedic? Thank you. Purogato (talk) 01:45, 6 November 2023 (UTC)

Sure! Let's discuss on the article's talk page; I'll put some thoughts there shortly. Additionally, please be aware that if you have a close personal connection to Rachlis, such as being onetime colleagues, friends, etc, Wikipedia's policies strongly discourage WP:COI editing. However, those with a COI are welcome to make suggestions on an article's talk page, which other editors will then assess and implement (or not). —Ganesha811 (talk) 01:52, 6 November 2023 (UTC)

Re: Advice

The short answer about helping at WP:CP is we would certainly appreciate the help. I will add a caveat that those tend to be some of the harder ones to review at times, hence why they get sent there. If you're relatively new to copyright reviewing yet, personally I would start at Wikipedia:CopyPatrol, as it's catching the violations right at the time and what's left to determine is really whether or not it's a copyvio or a mirror. If you are already comfortable with copyright though, then the trick is really just to make sure you review the sources and use your best judgment, since sometimes the copyright tools will come back clean, but it doesn't pass the smell test and I end up finding the violation a different way (case in point the thread right below yours on my page). Wizardman 15:00, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

This is very helpful, thank you! Will bear all this in mind as I wade in at CopyPatrol. —Ganesha811 (talk) 17:38, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

The article Nadezhda Stasova you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Nadezhda Stasova for comments about the article, and Talk:Nadezhda Stasova/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has never appeared on the Main Page as a "Did you know" item, and has not appeared within the last year either as "Today's featured article", or as a bold link under "In the news" or in the "On this day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear at DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On this day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. AFDs

Hello, Ganesha811,

First, thank you for helping out at AFD, closing some discussions. We need more admins patrolling and reviewing deletion discussions. However, closers usually wait until closer to the "expiration date", 7 days (or later) after the discussion has opened. This has been standard practice although recently, some closers have ended some discussions early. The problem with early closes is that they can be challenged at Deletion review and also when they are closed a great deal early (6+ hours early), it doesn't allow feedback from editors come in at the end of this week-long period and voice an opinion. Their arguments can make a difference in discussions that are not unanimous. The exception to this waiting period are Speedy Keeps but there are guidelines on when and how to handle those cases. Thanks again for your help. Liz Read! Talk! 17:36, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

Thank you - I will bear this in mind going forward. I incorrectly thought that discussions could be closed on the 7th day, rather than after the 7th day. My mistake! —Ganesha811 (talk) 17:43, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

You may be interested; I saw Handel's Messiah in full for the first time this holiday, and while Part I could be passed over without missing too much, Part III really blew me away, particularly this song. The "Hallelujah" chorus is fun, but there are moments of remarkable beauty throughout the whole oratorio. —Ganesha811 (talk) 16:20, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Kenstan01 (18:35, 26 December 2023)

Hello Ganesha811,

Thanks for being a mentor. Is the editing process a simple as reading an article and correcting errors based on research? --Kenstan01 (talk) 18:35, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

Yes, that's a great way to start! If you're planning to make large changes to an article all at once, you might post about it on the talk page before you do it, but in general, that sounds like an excellent strategy for an editor starting out. You could also focus on typos, or finding sources for uncited passages. Happy editing! —Ganesha811 (talk) 13:35, 28 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello, I see that you closed this Afd as a Delete. Given various Keep !votes do refer to guidelines and not only to the number of porn awards, would you please consider relist it one last time? I see other Afds often relisted 3 times when the consensus is not that easy to determine. Also the page was recently edited in a way that, for example, an administrator who had relisted the page could not even realize recent sources that can back a GNG claim were using another name (see my !vote), so that another round of comments would be in my view useful. Thank you. -My, oh my! (Mushy Yank) 07:59, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi! I did take into account that some Keep !votes made policy-based arguments, but I thought those arguments were effectively countered by the policy-based arguments of the Delete !voters. There were a couple Keep !votes without strong rationales. My view is that consensus is that WP:ANYBIO does not apply, and that though the Harper's source is probably the strongest overall, there is not enough to meet WP:GNG. The Yahoo/BI piece appears to be a promotional interview, not in-depth journalistic work. Thanks for bringing this up, but on a second look, I don't think there's a strong basis to undo the close. —Ganesha811 (talk) 11:02, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
Hello again and thank you for this friendly and thorough reply. I seem to remember other reliable sources about her (Glamour in Bulgarian, with her on the cover, among other things). I still think she could be considered notable but independently (because my view is that Howell meets GNG) of this very article, this, I think, raises yet another time the issue of WP criteria for notoriety of pornographic entertainers, whose approach, I am sure, will have to be reconsidered again in the future. But that’s another story. Thanks again. Best wishes, -My, oh my! (Mushy Yank) 16:36, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
I agree that the provision in WP:ANYBIO mentioning a "well-known and significant award or honor" could stand to be spelled out a little more, especially in categories where we frequently have marginal notability and marginally reliable sources, such as pornographic performers. Happy editing! —Ganesha811 (talk) 21:51, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello

Can you review the article of Emperor Haile Selassie I for a potential good article, it would be appreciated CtasACT (talk) 18:37, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello! I generally don't take requests, but good luck with the article review! I'm sure someone will pick it up in the next few weeks (or couple months at the outside). —Ganesha811 (talk) 22:00, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Hey! I made a calendar of oddities

Hey, I hope you're having a good 2024 so far! I made a list of unusual anniversaries (kind of like WP:UNUSUAL and WP:OTD combined) on my userpage and I'm spreading the word in case others have good things to add. I'm not quite sure what the purpose of the page is yet; I just figured that if *I* find it interesting, others might too. Crunchydillpickle🥒 (talk) 00:45, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

This is cool! I'll see if I can think of anything to add. —Ganesha811 (talk) 04:30, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from Nayemparvaze (12:43, 9 January 2024)

Hello, my account is more than 4 days old and I have written an article and save it in sandbox. Total number of edits are more than 80. But I haven't find the 'move' option. What to do? --Nayemparvaze (talk) 12:43, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Hello! The instructions at Help:how to move a page may be useful. However, I can't recommend moving your sandbox article out of userspace yet. As currently written, it's non-neutral in tone, and the sourcing is not done correctly. I suggest you make more time making modifications, and then submit it to WP:AfC for review by an experienced editor. You can do this by adding Template:User sandbox to the top of your sandbox page and then clicking the "Submit your draft" button which appears. Happy editing. —Ganesha811 (talk) 14:08, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
