Template:Cite AV media
Happy New Year! You saved me an "Edit protected" request! --Funandtrvl (talk) 16:38, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
- You are welcome. I suspect you mean my update to {{template shortcut}} which I was too tired to do last night. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 16:40, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
- Yes! I have one suggestion though, in regards to Template:Citation Style documentation#Section usage, the 'Description' section should really be changed to be in order of the way it is in the template. E.g., 'Anchor', which is the 'ref', makes more sense at the end, as it is at that place in most of the 'cite' templates. In fact, the way the sections are ordered in the further below "Parameters section" on that page, is following the template code order, and not the order described under 'Section usage'. I feel some consistency would be helpful, because the order described on that page in the 'Section usage' part, and the order actually used in the 'Parameters section' are contradictory; thus, the confusion. I mostly try to update /doc pages so that they follow the order of the code, which is often also pictured in the hard code examples of the related templates at the top right of the template pages; thus, my update here. --Funandtrvl (talk) 17:03, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
- I am certainly open to suggestions on reorganizing. Whatever we decide, it needs to be done across the Citation Style 1 series. Lets take this to Help talk:Citation Style 1 for transparency. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 21:42, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, that's okay with me. --Funandtrvl (talk) 22:04, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Happy New Year, Gadget850. Though I know you've worked so much in templates, in the case of {{cite AV media}} I think it suffices to show only ONE shortcut, {{cite media}} with {{template shortcut}} rather than showing many; a tidy, well chosen display facilitates to remember. (This view is shared in Template talk:Template shortcut#Expand? by User:David Göthberg.) I'm not sure if it's better to list many redirects in "Aliases" section; some are unused at all, and others are purely historical. For example, {{wiktionary}} has this many aliases, but many are useless from practical viewpoint.
Obviously you don't have to delete (old) template aliases, but at the same time it's better to keep them well organized. See for example {{Wiktionary templates common doc}} which is a part of the docs of {{wt}}, {{wtr}} etc. (I created most of these shortcuts and the table recently, but it may be an excess, I know. Let's see what will happen. Wikipedia is still in its cradle.)
I edited Template:template shortcut/doc promoting my opinion, but I'd be glad to discuss. Thanks a lot. --Ahora (talk) 05:19, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
- Upon reflection, the box is not listing shortcuts, but redirects, thus {{template redirects}} is more appropriate. But we don't need to know what redirects to a template, so I have removed all and deleted the template.--— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 02:25, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
Ok, but as pointed out at Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2012_December_10#Template:Cite_video by User:delldot, the shortcut {{cite media}} is nice; fairly general and descriptive, yet easy to remember and use, so I re-added it to {{cite AV media/doc}} with {{template shortcut}}.
At the same time, {{template shortcut}} is sometimes used to show long but good aliases. (I can't cite a good example here, but in Japanese Wikipedia, templates imported from English Wikipedia often have a Japanese name, and the original name as redirects. In those cases, it's good to show English aliases, which are not necesarily short.) If you know some such examples too, changing the text "shortcut:" in the box of {{template shortcut}} to "aliases:" may be good. But it's probably better to propose first at the talk page than discussing here between two of us. Thanks anyway. --Ahora (talk) 06:11, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:United Reformed Church Guide and Scout Fellowship.png)
Thanks for uploading File:United Reformed Church Guide and Scout Fellowship.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:51, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

- It does no harm, but it is redundant and it leads to reuse. I have cleaned up a handful, but a bot would be more thorough and efficient. See Template talk:Lang#xml:lang is now redundant for my original discussion. I noticed it was no longer whitelisted at

Help Project newsletter : Issue 5
The Help Project Newsletter Issue V - January 2013 | |
|
Hello again from the Help Project! In the last newsletter (which was quite a while ago sorry!) I talked about my fellowship and the plans for improving the main portal page, Help:Contents. Well I'm sad to say that my fellowship is now over, but very happy to say that the proposed improvements to that page have been completed and implemented. Do check it out if you haven't already. Another important and frequently used help page, Wikipedia:Contact us, has also seen a significant revamp. You may recognise the design inspiration from the new tutorial pages. In project news, we now have a subscription to the "article alerts" service. Any deletion nominations, move discussions, or requests for comments on pages within the Help Project's scope will now show up at Wikipedia:Help Project/Article alerts. So that's definitely a page which project members might want to watch. Any comments or suggestions for future issues are welcome at Wikipedia:Help Project/Newsletter. If you don't wish to receive this newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the participants page and add "no newsletter" next to your name. |

WikiCup 2013 February newsletter
Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.
Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:
- Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
- Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
- Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.
Other contributors of note include:
- Sven Manguard (submissions), whose Portal:Massachusetts is the first featured portal this year. The featured portal process is one of the less well-known featured processes, and featured portals have traditionally had little impact on WikiCup scores.
- Sasata (submissions), whose Mycena aurantiomarginata was the first featured article this year.
- Muboshgu (submissions) and Wizardman (submissions), who both claimed points for articles in the Major League Baseball tie-breakers topic, the first topic points in the competition.
- Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), who claimed for the first full good topic with the Casting Crowns studio albums topic.
Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...
March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!
A few final administrative issues. From now on, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Court case
I'm curious about this edit and this information, "The 1974 settlement between the BSA and the NAACP over racial discrimination required the BSA to issue its first non-discrimination policy regarding race (Stipulation and Order, NAACP, et al. v. Boy Scouts of America, et al. (Civil No. C-74-329): U.S. District Court for the District of Utah, Central Division, 1974.)" I've never heard of this court case, have you? --evrik (talk) 19:08, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
- Yes. The short story is that LDS Church did not allow black youth to be leaders such as SPL. I think some details are wrong but let me look.
- And this inclusion in every southern state bugs me. Neither Chicago nor Tulsa are considered southern, but the Chicago Race Riot of 1919 and the Tulsa race riot were particular low points. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 19:17, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
A 12-year-old boy scout has been denied a senior patrol leadership in his troop because he is black", Don L. Cope, black ombudsman for the state, said Wednesday.
Mormon 'troop policy is that in order for a scout to become a patrol leader, he must be a deacon's quorum president in the LDS Church. Since the boy cannot hold the priesthood, he cannot become a patrol leader.' "
Shortly before Boy Scout officials were to appear in Federal Court Friday morning on charges of discrimination, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a policy change which will allow black youths to be senior patrol leaders, a position formerly reserved for white LDS youths in troops sponsored by the church. An LDS Church spokesman said Friday under the "guidelines set forth in the statement, a young man other than president of the deacons quorum could (now) become the senior patrol leader if he is better qualified". - (Salt Lake Tribune, August 3,1974).

- I am eventually going to try and clean up all the state pages. It should probably be on the controversies page. along with this,
In 1914, the BSA gave local councils the power to ban African Americans from Scouting. [1]. Until 1974, some southern councils of the Boy Scouts of America were still racially segregated. The Old Hickory council did not integrate until 1974. [2] The 1974 settlement between the BSA and the NAACP over racial discrimination required the BSA to issue its first non-discrimination policy regarding race.[3]

Hey there, there may have been some confusion earlier. I was trying to create a placeholder article. I wasn't necessarily trying to take the article live yet, or short cut what you were working on, which is why I didn't use your title of List of defunct local councils of the Boy Scouts of America. DYK for Local councils of the Boy Scouts of America
On 16 March 2013, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Local councils of the Boy Scouts of America, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the majority of local councils of the Boy Scouts of America have gone through thousands of name changes, merges, splits and re-creations since the establishment of the organization in 1910? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Local councils of the Boy Scouts of America. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

- I updated my example and it works. You need to use a cite template as shown. Your version of {{cite book}} does not support
|ref=harv
so you have to create it manually. You also don't have the CSS on your site to highlight the full citation; since it is a short example, it won't appear to jump to the full citation. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 13:20, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

Our recent edits
You seem to be following behind me and changing my edits. I caught it with this edit and was going to let it slide. I just thought it was a waste of your time as well as mine. Then I came across this edit, where you actually broke the shortcut category by using uppercase letters. Gadget850, don't you even check your edits to see if they do what you want them to do? Now you need to go back and check your recent edits to see if you've broken anything else. And please explain why you feel the need to alter my edits. Do you have some wasteful intent to unpopulate the Redirects to sections cat in favor of the Redirects to anchors cat? – PAINE ELLSWORTH CLIMAX! 06:06, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- I just fix stuff on my watchlist; I have no idea what you do elsewhere. I checked each one as I updated; I rechecked Wikipedia:REFGROUP and it is working. Let's look at that one: someone before you changed it from the anchor to a direct link, but I didn't catch it at the time. The linked page includes a {{shortcut}} template which creates an anchor: in this case named WP:REFGROUP. When you create the redirect, you should link to the shortcut anchor, not the section name. If the section is renamed (which happens), the shortcut anchor remains the same and the link still works. You edit wasn't broken, but linking to the {{shortcut}} anchor is more robust. Indeed, your edit to Wikipedia:EXPLNOTE undid my standing edit. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 12:38, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- I see your POV, however it really makes no sense to me to alter a perfectly good shortcut that works. If a header is changed in the future, then those who change it need to learn to anchor the old header in order to not break links to the section, to include shortcut links. In my opinion anchoring the shortcut to the shortcut is just one more reason for editors who change section headers to fail to anchor the old section names.
- But all that aside, what this is really about is your changing several of my recent edits without letting me know what you think I'm doing wrong. If I'm doing something wrong, then I need to know it so I'll stop doing it. When you come behind me and change my edits like that, it makes me feel like it's a waste of time to make the edits in the first place. Can you follow what I mean here? – PAINE ELLSWORTH CLIMAX! 20:57, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
See if you go for this, Gadget850... I've been catting redirects gnomishly for some time, now. The vast majority of the shortcuts I find that go somewhere besides the TOP go to section headers, and the vast majority of those are not pointed at a shortcut anchor, but to the section header itself. Every once in awhile I come across shortcuts that go to embedded anchors where there were no section headers. Someone occasionally uses the semicolon for headers
- like this line that begins with a semicolon in the code.
For those, I never hesitated to cat them with {{R to anchor}}. Up to now, just so there would be standardization, when I came across a shortcut that targeted an anchor that was also to a section header, I would alter the redirect to target the section header. A few minutes ago I came across one like that, and rather than alter the target, I just slapped the {{R to anchor}} Rcat on it and kept going. That's what I'll do from now on, since it's faster and works just as well. I hope that meets with your approval, and you won't feel you have to alter any more of my edits. If this does not set well with you, please let me know why. My main thrust here is to improve Wikipedia without wasting a lot of time on edits that will be almost immediately altered by another contributor. And thank you for listening and putting up with me. – PAINE ELLSWORTH CLIMAX! 01:24, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
- "where you actually broke the shortcut category by using uppercase letters" Yes, I broke that, must have hit caps lock.
- "those who change it need to learn to anchor the old header in order to not break links to the section" And that is what the {{shortcut}} template does: it creates an anchor. If you link to the shortcut anchor, then the section header doesn't matter.
- "changing several of my recent edits without letting me know" I apologize for that. I actually started to, then got interrupted and never came back to it.
- No worries, then? --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 12:57, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
- I'm good – thank you for letting me vent a little. My point about the anchoring is that contributors need to anchor the section-header changes they make, whether or not there is a shortcut to the section. The broken links are the ones that go to that section, both from internal and external web pages. There is a bot that finds these, but it doesn't fix them – it just places a message box on the article's talk page, and editors have to check the finds and fix the broken links. I've fixed a lot of these whenever I've come across them. Thanks again, and good fortune to you and yours! – PAINE ELLSWORTH CLIMAX! 13:41, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
- Well, that is the very intent of {{shortcut}}. BTW: Using the definition markup (;) to bold a line is improper. HTML 5 now requires that every definition have a list. The W3C validator give an error. --— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 14:14, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
- I just realized that there are several of those semicolon-bolded lines on the MOS page. You say it's improper. I'm not sure I understand, but I'm sure I'll need to cite a policy or guideline when I go changing all those lines. Can you point me to a reference? – PAINE ELLSWORTH CLIMAX! 01:50, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
- As I said, not all section headers have shortcuts, but their old section names should be anchored with at the very least a

Orphaned non-free media (File:Virgin Islands Council CSP.png)
Thanks for uploading File:Virgin Islands Council CSP.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. Girl Scouts
Gadget850 - Yesterday I thought I would help with disambiguation so I went to the disambiguation page and randomly picked Girl Scouts. I spent an hour reviewing all the groups on that page and then I checked some of the articles that linked to Girl Scouts. About 95% of the links to Girl Scouts were looking for an organization NOT on the Girl Scouts disambiguation page. What they were looking for, of course, was the Girl Scouts of the USA. Now I had read the talk page and I saw your comment about not putting the individual national organizations on the Girl Scouts disambiguation page, but, I decided you were wrong. And I put the Girl Scouts of the USA on the page. You have reverted me. I have become BOLDER and have now made the correction to the page I should have made in the beginning. What do you think? Palmares
I really need some help, and it seems like you your right person to ask. I want to add the same column options used in {{Refbegin}}
for {{Palmares start}}
, so it can be set like this {{Refbegin|3}}
or {{Refbegin|30em}}
. The default is two columns and there is another parameter for a source. The problem is that when viewed on a small screen (mobile) the lines split and it becomes impossible to read. I've set up a sandbox and the appropriate testcases. Hopefully you can help me out, as I'm struggling. If you can't, could you point me in the right direction. Cheers. You're awesome
I saw your feedback at the help desk about using the {{mem}} template for the notable alumni list at Hollywood High School. That's pretty damn cool. Unfortunately, though, I didn't see your comment until long after I had already spent hours creating a collapsible table using the method advised by the other admin (Yunshui). That page you referred me to even has a section specifically about using the template "For lists of notable alumni"! You're very good; I'll bet there aren't too many editors who even know about. Anyway, I used the method Yunshui explained at the help desk and the table looks very similar to your way. I created three columns (Name/Class year/Notability), but now I'm not sure (after seeing your template) if there will be any problems with the way I did it. If you see anything wrong with it, please feel free to make any fixes. Of course, the sole problem which prompted me to go to the help desk in the first place was the excessive length of the list; it was just overwhelming the article because it was so incredibly long compared to the rest the article. So as long as the table is collapsed by default, I'll be happy with whatever template is used. So again, if anything needs changed, I won't mind one bit if you do it. In fact, I'd appreciate it because I'm sure that's easily the biggest notable alumni list of any high school article. Anyway, thanks a lot for educating me on that mem template. Even though I still have no idea how to use it, it was really cool to see a template that is specifically meant for tables like the one I've been working on. :) --76.189.111.2 (talk) 15:20, 3 April 2013 (UTC)
- You are welcome. Sorry I didn't see your question earlier, but you can certainly use any bits you need. The template is just a table formed in chunks. -- Gadget850 (Ed) talk 15:28, 3 April 2013 (UTC)
- No problem at all. I apologize, maybe I should've waited for a few hours, but I really liked the clear instructions Yunshui gave me and it looked like it would a perfect fix to the problem. And it appears that it is. Again, I don't know if the way I did it is still OK or if it needs to be changed, but I'm totally lost about how to use that mem template anyway. And your "chunks" comment confused me even more. Haha. (And I don't have any energy left to spend hours changing what I already did. :p) I'm just a little concerned now because I don't want anything I did to cause a problem. So if you need or want to change anything, be my guest. 76.189.111.2 (talk) 15:42, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Cite ship register template redux
I want to revisit a topic we breifly discussed earlier this year.
Today I added {{cite ship register}}
to the list of templates that use citaion/core because it does. As part of that I reread Help:Citation Style 2. That document says that CS2 citations are based on {{citation}}
which seems to be born out by the other templates in Category:Citation Style 2 templates. {{Cite ship register}}
is not based on {{citation}}
so isn't it now mis-categorized?
Doesn't {{cite ship register}}
really belong in Category:Citation Style 1 specific-source templates.
—Trappist the monk (talk) 14:31, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- No comment? Should I take that as tacit agreement that
{{cite ship register}}
doesn't belong in Category:Citation Style 2 templates?
- To further muddy the water, Category:Citation Style 1 specific-source templates might not be the right place either. Except for
{{cite IETF}}
, every template I looked at did not directly use{{citation/core}}
– they all used one of the CS1 templates. What to do?
Notability question
Evrik (talk · contribs) is un-merging a large number of local councils into their own articles because state wide articles cannot support individual logos. My question is do the individual council articles pass the general notability guide? For example I have no clue why Pacific Skyline Council should have its own article. Werieth (talk) 19:20, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- I truly have no control over his actions. If you have a conviction on this, then AfD is the forum. -- Gadget850 (Ed) talk 19:23, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- I am unsure of the issue, since you are the lead on WP:SCOUT I thought you would be able to give me some insight. Werieth (talk) 19:28, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- I think Wikipedia:Village Pump (policy) is the best forum for this, create a notability guideline first then go to AfD. Absent any notability guideline, I'd support the creation of individual council articles. Ryan Vesey 19:40, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- Local councils are notable, but the article has to demonstrate it per WP:ORG. I have always disliked the state articles, as the BSA does not operate that way. -- Gadget850 (Ed) talk 19:46, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- FWIW, this is exactly what I said I would do. I would be willing to merge them back into the one state article, but that would involve a compromise. --evrik (talk) 19:48, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- Evrik, or I can just AfD the individual articles as failing ORG, and have the contents sans logo merged back to the state articles and we go back to status quo, of having state articles minus large numbers of non-free files. Werieth (talk) 19:54, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- Go ahead and AfD the articles as failing ORG. They'll pass that test. Do you really want to waste everyone's time like that? I would like to find a compromise. The large state article without the logos is the worst off all the options. I'm listening. --evrik (talk) 19:57, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- A general AfD request to merge the articles will succeed, Piedmont Council (California) and San Diego-Imperial Council really have no assertion of notability. If you think you have a compromise I am willing to hear it but the two options that you have suggested really are not that feasible. One violates WP:NFCC the other violates notability. Please take this to my talk if you have something workable, otherwise I will start a mass AfD for merging in a few days. Werieth (talk) 20:05, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- I'm okay with leaving the discussion here. We are at impasse and there is no consensus. Why don't we get an independent arbiter to settle this difference of opinion. --evrik (talk) 20:56, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- I see you now did the same thing to Scouting in New York. I am going to revert that change while we further discuss this. You're not happy with the long article pages, nor are you happy with splitting them up. Surely there has to be a middle ground? --evrik (talk) 18:08, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
- I was suggesting taking this to one of our talk pages because poor Gadget850 is getting emails for every post we make here. I am fine with the long conglomerate list article, In fact I think that is the best option as each one of these smaller articles lacks independent notability for the most part. Just like countless List of Characters from X. And in similar cases the usage for a logo per item is not acceptable. If you want I can can reference multiple debates and discussions that codified that point. I am open to having one or two images, Have you looked for an image that already combines the individual emblems into a single image? (Note: you cannot create this yourself). Werieth (talk) 18:29, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
- I’m like a bad party guest. I’ll stay here until Gadget850 kicks me out. ;-) Seriously though, Gadget mentioned earlier that he is not a fan of the long state article, and back in 2006, neither was I. I had just started the long project of trying to clean-up all the state pages when I was sidetracked by the discussion on the images. I disagree that the smaller articles lack independent notability. I think each of these articles has a lot more potential, and are not like the List of Characters from X, because of the 100 year history of scouting. They have had an impact on their community. Maybe by breaking them apart they will flourish?
- Listing references to the debates won't get us anywhere as I disagree on the premise that the article is a list. I think the long state articles are ugly, but they are not necessarily lists. Now that all the content has been stripped out of Scouting in California, it's a list. Really though, this only affects the larger state articles, and not the smaller state articles. I’m searching for a middle ground. --evrik (talk) 20:51, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

Template:Blockquote paragraphs
Hi, I know little about templates, but this edit would seem to change the sense of what the page is talking about. The examples seem to outline indents, not citations. You made a comment on the talk page, so I wondered if you might have some insight into this change. The new editor has made many odd changes on other pages. Please advise. Thanks Span (talk) 19:12, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
- Most of the edits are minor non-visible style edits. But I am utterly baffled by the use in citation in this context.
- As I have noted on the talk page, there is a really simple solution to replace the solution that uses HTML comments. -- Gadget850 (Ed) talk 19:31, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

The conference includes two days of presentations and open discussions, followed by team "sprints" - collaborative efforts to write and improve documentation. It has been suggested to send a team from Wikipedia/Wikimedia: to share our own knowledge about help, learn from others in the open source community working on similar problems, and to carry out a sprint to improve some aspect of Wikipedia's help. There may be support available for volunteers to attend from the Participation Support program (and your editor is certainly hoping to be there!) You deleted this while it was in use at 11th Canadian Scout Jamboree. Please restore it-it was not unused as your summary stated.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 07:34, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Templates and dates
Hi Gadget, comment for you here, in case you miss it. Best, SlimVirgin (talk) 01:48, 13 June 2013 (UTC)
Thank you
Gadget, thank you very much for making this edit. I'm not sure if you saw it, but I expressed my gratitude to you in the help desk thread, also. I had been trying for hours yesterday to find someone who knew how to fix those footnotes. Thanks for improving on Yunshui's fix. Btw, I left this message for Yunshui a few hours ago, asking whether the five sources at the end of the first paragraph should also be footnoted. If you know, or would be willing to footnote that one also, if needed, that would be great. It's really nice to have technical wizards like you available to help novices like me. Thanks, again. --76.189.109.155 (talk) 20:14, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

- (Not all changes will affect you.)
- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.22wmf7) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on June 13. It will be enabled on non–Wikipedia sites on June 17, and on all Wikipedias on June 20. [4]
- The Narayam and WebFonts extensions were successfully replaced by Universal Language Selector on June 11. [5]
- VisualEditor news:
- VisualEditor was temporarily disabled on Wikipedia sites on June 14 due to an issue that inserted a lot of HTML code. The issue is now fixed and VisualEditor works as before.
- Users can now use VisualEditor to add images and other media items from their local wikis and Wikimedia Commons. [6].
- VisualEditor also allows editing references. [7]
- The new Disambiguator extension, which was previously part of MediaWiki itself, was enabled on test wikis. It adds the magic word
__DISAMBIG__
to mark disambiguation pages. [8] - The newly enabled Campaigns extension allows Wikimedia Foundation data analysts to track account creations that result from a specific outreach campaign.
- Future software changes
- Universal Language Selector will be added to the Catalan (ca), Cebuano (ceb), Persian (fa), Finnish (fi), Norwegian Bokmål (no), Portuguese (pt), Ukrainian (uk), Vietnamese (vi), Waray-Waray (war) and Chinese (zh) Wikipedias on June 18. [9]
- Starting on June 18, VisualEditor will be randomly enabled by default for half of newly created accounts on the English Wikipedia to test stability, performance and features. [10]
- Two new webfonts (UnifrakturMaguntia and Linux Libertine) will be added to wikis that use Universal Language Selector. [11] [12]
- It will now be possible to hide the sidebar while using the Translate extension to reduce distractions (bug #45836). [13]
- A patrolling link will now be visible for un-patrolled pages, even if users don't visit it from Special:NewPages or Special:RecentChanges (bug #49123). [14]
- A request for comments on enabling a new search engine for MediaWiki was started.

Sandbox deletion??
I got an email a while ago telling me that my sandbox had been deleted. Following the link in the email, I arrived at an empty sandbox that had the following notification:
"This page has been deleted. The deletion and move log for the page are provided below for reference. 19:18, 17 June 2013 Gadget850"
However, after I signed in I went to the sandbox and everything looks normal (i.e. nothing gone that I hadn't removed myself).
So what does that notification mean? Akhooha (talk) 21:59, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, never mind.... It pays to read carefully. Looking at things again, I realized it was the "Help:Cite errors/Akhooha/sandbox" page that got deleted, and not the sandbox itself. Never having been aware in the first place of the "Help:Cite errors/Akhooha/sandbox" page, I don't miss it. But now I'm curious: what was it's function? Thanks. Akhooha (talk) 13:59, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
- I figured you had misplaced a sandbox edit somehow. It was quite short and had not been edited in a long time. -- Gadget850 talk 15:15, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

TfD consensus to keep fast-cite templates
The following fast-cite templates were discussed at wp:TfD, and the community consensus was to Keep those templates, with some marked as historical:
- {{Cite quick}}
- {{Cite fast}}
- {{Fcite}}, {{Fcite book}}, {{Fcite fast}}, {{Fcite journal}}, {{Fcite web}}
All of those templates were closed at wp:TfD as Keep. Those templates must remain where they are, per the results of community consensus. See for example, Template:Cite_quick which outperforms the Lua-based cites (of Module:Citation/CS1), in allowing more than 2x (twice) as many citations per page:
There is no consensus to either delete them, or userfy them, to reduce access or mislead users into thinking those templates were not used in many mainspace articles. Those templates are used in many prior revisions of several major articles and are needed to support the formatted display of those prior revisions, as they appeared at the time. Do you recall that those templates were discussed at wp:TfD and the consensus was to keep those templates? -Wikid77 (talk) 14:12, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Merit badge (Boy Scouts of America), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Programming (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). The Help Project Newsletter
Issue VII - August 2013
Hello from Hong Kong, and the Wikimania DevCamp! Just a quick bulletin to update everyone on recent goings-on:
- There was a Wikimedia blog post about our experience at the Open Help Conference.
- Based on discussions at the Open Help Conference, Seeeko, Ocaasi and the wub have drafted a series of guidelines for writing and improving help pages.
- There is now also a system in place for assessing help pages by quality and importance. See Wikipedia:Help Project/Assessment for more details and the two scales we are using.
- A project collaboration has been started, the first one is focusing on the above mentioned Assessment. Discussions about this are welcome at Wikipedia talk:Help Project#Current collaboration (and the next).
- Wikipedia:New contributors' help page/questions was merged into Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions
- A couple of other mergers have been proposed:
- Help:Introduction to talk pages and Help:Introduction to policies and guidelines have both been overhauled and updated to use the new tutorial design.
Suggestions for future issues are welcome at Wikipedia:Help Project/Newsletter.
If you don't wish to receive this newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the participants page and add "no newsletter" next to your name.

Orphaned non-free media (File:Cruzeiro do Sul.png)
Thanks for uploading File:Cruzeiro do Sul.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful.
Thank you. Werieth (talk) 18:06, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

New features
- The previous version of MediaWiki (1.22/wmf13) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on August 15. It was enabled on non-Wikipedia sites on August 19, and on all Wikipedias on August 22. [49]
- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.22/wmf14) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on August 22. It will be enabled on non-Wikipedia sites on August 26, and on all Wikipedias on August 29. [50]
- You can now use new styles of galleries. Please give feedback to User:Bawolff. [51]
- You can now visit a random page in a category, for example Special:RandomInCategory/Science. (25931) [52]
- You can now use the
<wbr>
HTML5 tag to say where a word can be cut. (52468) [53] - Gadget authors: you can now use the
wikipage.content
hook, so that your scripts are re-run when a page is changed after thedocument-ready
event (for example using Ajax). (30713) [54]
Problems fixed
- There was a bug where file redirects didn't work when a file was renamed; it is now fixed. There is still an issue with purging, but it should be fixed soon. (52200)
- Maintenance reports provided by special pages will now all be updated on each wiki every six months. This will for example give you recent information on uncategorized pages, unused templates and most wanted pages (see details).
- There was a bug that caused false positives for anti-blanking edit filters; it is now fixed. (52077) [55]
VisualEditor news
- The "edit" and "edit source" tabs and section edit links can now be changed more easily; for example, some wikis are using "edit source" for wikitext editing, and "edit beta" for VisualEditor. You can ask for the same change in bugzilla.
- You can now edit references that are added inside a
<references>
block. (51741) - You can now test on mediawiki.org new basic tools to add and edit struck text (with the button for the
<s>
tag), lower text ( for
), upper text ( for
), underlined text ( for<u>
), computer code ( for<code>
and<tt>
), math text ( for<math>
), Egyptian hieroglyphs ( for<hiero>
), and to say that text is in another language ( forlang="ar" dir="rtl"
). (51609, 51612, 51611, 51590, 51610, 52352) - You can now use VisualEditor with the Opera browser. [56]
Future
- Starting on August 26, you will be able to use data from Wikidata on Wikivoyage sites. [57]
- Starting on August 27, you will also get notifications on the mobile site if you're logged in to a wiki using notifications. [58]
- Starting on August 28, all users with an account will be using HTTPS to access Wikimedia sites. HTTPS brings better security and improves your privacy. Some countries (like China) will not use HTTPS. If HTTPS causes problems for you, tell us on meta. [59]
- Starting on August 29, you will get the code editor interface to edit JavaScript and CSS pages on all wikis. [60]
- The plan to use Solr for search in MediaWiki was changed; instead, Elasticsearch is now planned. [61]

Via
Are you aware that with the last sync of Module:Citation/CS1, |via=
no longer includes the subscription required link note? I have no problem with that but there was some conversation about it in these two conversations: via= should not always invoke subscription required and Via.
—Trappist the monk (talk) 00:05, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- Missed that. Let me know if the 'via' discussion ever has a conclusion. -- Gadget850 talk 00:18, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
- The conversation has been fading, but someone is going to notice that all of a sudden,
|via=
is no longer including the link note. Once they do, then isn't it pretty much a done deal? The conversation devolved into a discussion about tangentially related topics – there is relatively little about the parameter and the link note and nothing, as far as I can tell, saying that we must keep|via=
with the link note. I would guess that if we do nothing, no one will complain.
- The conversation has been fading, but someone is going to notice that all of a sudden,
- A bug exists which I have fixed in the sandbox:
Wikitext | {{cite book
|
---|---|
Live | Last. Title – via Delivery Service. {{cite book}} : Unknown parameter |sandbox= ignored (help); Unknown parameter |subscription= ignored (|url-access= suggested) (help)
|
Sandbox | Last. Title – via Delivery Service. {{cite book}} : Unknown parameter |sandbox= ignored (help); Unknown parameter |subscription= ignored (|url-access= suggested) (help)
|
- I tested the fix first and then copied the live version into the sand box and fixed it again so that the playing around I did today won't be copied into the live version. If you would check my repair and then synch the live version from the sandbox please.
- Ping.

A barnstar for you!
The Citation Barnstar | |
Thank you immensely for your hard work on the citation templates over such a long period of time, particularly your work on documentation and errors, and your assistance with the transition to Lua and the great improvements that has brought. I don't know where we'd be without your contributions in this area! — This, that and the other (talk) 08:54, 5 September 2013 (UTC) |
- Thank you. -- Gadget850 talk 09:29, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
- My thanks as well. I often think that we Wikipedians must be masochists because we do far too much for far too little appreciation. I just noticed the discussion on the cite x error displays, and I am sad to see how the discussion went because I found the visual display of those errors and missing parameters to be ridiculously useful. I, for one, appreciate the work you've done to help the rest of us out with things like this. Cheers! Resolute 15:36, 6 September 2013 (UTC)
I agree. You've been very helpful with the citation work. It's an important, but largely thankless job, and you did it well. Sometimes stress gets the best of all of us and it is good to take a break. I hope you find something more satisfying to do. Dragons flight (talk) 21:07, 6 September 2013 (UTC)
- I may come back to this in a some months. Just need to take a break before I get truly burned out. -- Gadget850 talk 01:27, 7 September 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Gadget. Sorry for being late to the discussion, but I just read the thread at VPT. Being one of our few technical wizards here at enwp makes you very valuable. Of course our citations are important because our content is only as good as the references. That means the work you do extremely important to enwp. You're right, it is a thankless job and it's definatley under-appreciated, but it's probably the most important work that happens on the project. I am very thankful for all the thousands of hours you have donated to the project over these many long years. Your work has been immensely valuable as noted by the well-respected editors commenting here. Please do take a break if it will help, but I do hope you will come back to citation work in the future. There are so few people doing it that the loss of an expert such as yourself would be a significant loss for enwp and its readers. Thanks for all your great work. It is greatly appreciated. 64.40.54.117 (talk) 06:16, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
- I may come back to this in a some months. Just need to take a break before I get truly burned out. -- Gadget850 talk 01:27, 7 September 2013 (UTC)
- Let me add my thanks as well. Proper references are the overlooked foundation of Wikipedia, and you've done a great deal to uphold the infrastructure that lets them be more than a fancy way to slap on boldface and italics. You're wise to step away before you burn out, and I hope that in time you'll be ready to use your skills here again. Choess (talk) 00:11, 15 September 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Distinctive unit insignia may have broken the syntax by modifying 2 "{}"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Please settle an argument
Chip Chocolate, an alias of Jesse Wellens, had a UK #68 hit with Cookie Dance, which causes him to pass WP:MUSICBIO criterion #2. TheRedPenOfDoom, on the other hand, believes that he fails WP:RS and WP:GNG and has redirected both to PrankvsPrank. Who is right?--Launchballer 21:41, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
- The operative clause is "A musician or ensemble may be notable if it meets at least one of the following criteria."
- "may" not "is". -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 21:43, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
- Either way he is still notable for two events. I suggest we put this through AfD.--Launchballer 21:50, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
- No, the single is something for which he may be notable. But there is no reliable sources to show that he actually is. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 23:20, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
- Either way he is still notable for two events. I suggest we put this through AfD.--Launchballer 21:50, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

But I will update the main links anyway. Hope that's OK and hope the 'hatnote' I added looks OK. Sussexonian (talk) 08:18, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

New features
- The "Toolbox" section in the site sidebar is now called "Tools" in English. You can do the same in your language by editing the interface text on translatewiki.net. Someone else may have already done it. [76]
VisualEditor news
- On wikis with VisualEditor, you can now use it on pages in the File, Help and Category spaces. [77]
Problems
- On October 22 (UTC), an error in the site settings caused
*.wikimedia.org
sites (like Meta-Wiki and Commons) to redirect towikimediafoundation.org
for a few hours. [78]
Future
- MediaWiki 1.23wmf1 was added to test wikis on October 24. It will arrive to non-Wikipedia wikis on October 28 and all Wikipedia wikis on October 31 (calendar).
- In the next days, servers in San Francisco will start providing (cached) content to users located in Oceania. If you are in that area and notice problems, please tell us. [79]
- You will soon be able to test new features easily using the "Beta Features" view. VisualEditor will be in the list on sites where it works and isn't automatically enabled. Another example is a set of changes in the article text style.

New features
- The style and colors for warning boxes, error messages, and success messages in all skins of MediaWiki has been changed. [80]
VisualEditor news
- You will soon be able to switch from editing in VisualEditor to editing wikitext directly without having to save the page. You can't yet switch from wikitext to VisualEditor but developers hope to make it possible in the future. [81]
Problems
- There was a problem on October 31 during the activation of MediaWiki 1.22wmf2 on test wikis. mediawiki.org was also broken, and if you had problems logging in, it was probably because of this as well.
Future
- Because of the problem with MediaWiki 1.22wmf2, the calendar has changed. It will be added to mediawiki.org and non-Wikipedia sites on November 4, and all Wikipedia sites on November 7.
JavaScript / Gadget developers
- Due to a recent change, gadgets and user scripts that use jQuery UI should explicitly load the appropriate modules, as they may not be loaded by default. [82]
- Developers have started to remove long-deprecated methods. You should check the JavaScript console (in
debug=true
mode) and look for deprecation warnings and their stack trace. [83]

New features
- You can now use the "Autonym" font of the Universal Language Selector (ULS) to display the name of languages (for example in navigation templates) in their correct script. To do this, add the CSS class
"autonym"
to the elements that include language names. Note that this font only works for the name of languages, not for any other text. [84]
Problems
- There was a problem with Parsoid (the program used by VisualEditor to convert wikitext to annotated HTML) on November 4, between 19:40 and 20:40 (UTC). Encoding issues caused non-ASCII characters (including those with diacritics, like "é") to be broken when converted to wikitext and saved to the page. [85]
Future
- The Beta Features tool is now available on Commons and Meta-Wiki. With it, you can test new features before they're added for everyone. The plan is to add this tool to all wikis on November 21. [86]
- MediaWiki 1.23wmf3 was added to test wikis on November 7. It will arrive to non-Wikipedia wikis on November 12 and all Wikipedia wikis on November 14 (calendar). [87]
- The MassMessage tool will be added to all wikis on November 14. It will make it simpler to send messages across wikis. [88]
- The button of the Search page will soon be changed to be blue and bigger (see the difference). [89]
- You will soon be able to add a page name as parameter for
{{REVISIONID}}
,{{REVISIONUSER}}
and{{REVISIONTIMESTAMP}}
and similar functions, by writing for example{{REVISIONID:Apple}}
. [90] - In the future, when you hide a CentralNotice banner on a wiki, it will also be hidden on other Wikimedia sites. [91]

New features
- The Beta Features announced before are now available on all Wikimedia wikis. You can test new features easily by changing your Beta preferences. VisualEditor is one of those features on sites where it works and isn't automatically enabled. There is also a new media viewer and changes in the article text style. [92]
- Tools developers can now create tools that use the OAuth protocol to connect to accounts on Wikimedia sites. As a user, you can use those tools to make edits and other changes with your account without giving the tool your password. [93]
Problems
- Wikis that are currently testing CirrusSearch had problems with search results on November 18 from 16:00 to 20:00 UTC.
Future
- There will be no major code changes on the week of November 25 because many developers will be on holiday for Thanksgiving.
- The editing interface of
Page:
pages on Wikisource (working with the Proofread Page extension) will soon also work without JavaScript. [94]

- You can now open VisualEditor by adding
?veaction=edit
to the page URL, regardless of your user preferences. [98] - Many bugs have been fixed, and VisualEditor should also look faster, for example when you save a page. [99]
Problems
- Due to issues, the new search tool ("CirrusSearch") was recently removed from wikis where it was enabled, then added again. [100]
Future
- MediaWiki 1.23wmf6 was added to test wikis on December 5. It will arrive to non-Wikipedia wikis on December 10 and all Wikipedia wikis on December 12 (calendar).
- The old Etherpad tool (replaced by a new version) will be removed on December 30, 2013. You can still save old pads before that date using the old address: https://etherpad-old.wikimedia.org. [101]

- You can now use a basic tool to add special characters to your text. You can add more characters (useful in your language) by editing the MediaWiki interface on translatewiki.net.
- The tool to add and edit mathematical text is now called "formula". [105]
Problems
- There was a problem with the "Create a book" tool (Collection); books could only be exported to PDF format. The change has been undone. [106]
- The log-in system for external tools ("OAuth") was broken on wikis that tested the new search tool. It was fixed last week. [107] [108]
- Because of a bug, this newsletter is delivered to users using the new MediaWiki message delivery, and to community pages using the old EdwardsBot. [109]
