dashes.js is suddenly broken
[edit]Something you changed in the last couple days may have broken the dashes.js script. I minus sign no longer appears at the page top... just "auto ed." There talk about it at User talk:Ohconfucius/dashes.js. Thanks. Fyunck(click) (talk) 07:15, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
- I'm seeing the same thing... use this amazing script all the time! Hope it can be fixed. —Joeyconnick (talk) 22:00, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
- Now fixed. Many thanks to User:William Avery for the workaround proposed. -- Ohc revolution of our times 11:26, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
- Still broken for me using Chrome. Microsoft Edge is also broken. Used shift-reload to reset the cache and it didn't work. No "-" at the page top, only "an auto ed" that brings up "AutoEd/core.js: autoEdFunctions is undefined". Fyunck(click) (talk) 20:29, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
- The fix I applied was to User:Ohconfucius/dashes.js and not to the original script, which you have loaded. You need to ensure that my updated version is being imported in your common file. -- Ohc revolution of our times 22:10, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

Wikipedia screenshot licensing
[edit]Hello! I see that you uploaded File:Update screenshot for activating MOSNUM dates.png to Wikipedia. However, the GFDL has been phased out for new uploads on enwiki. To clarify the license of the image, would you be able to add {{Wikipedia-screenshot}} to the file description page? Thanks! HouseBlastertalk 21:20, 26 September 2022 (UTC)

monomyn issue in script

The file File:Snoopy mural.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
No Freedom of panorama in France. Underlying artwork would be still copyrighted
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Salavat (talk) 07:32, 3 December 2022 (UTC)

Where should I ask for help on using MOSNUM_dates script?
[edit]Hello,
I've come across the use of the script User:Ohconfucius/script/MOSNUM_dates
I'd appreciate a pointer as to where I can ask for help in using the script bearing in mind that I've no idea how to use scripts to edit Wikipedia - I have had a look at the MOSNUM_dates page and just run into a brick wall (there are too many terms used of which I have negligible or less understanding).
In particular, I'd like to learn how to use the script to force the use of yyyy-mm-dd in access and archive dates in article citations (in line with Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers#Consistency).
(I did read that "Users are invited to manually add |cs1-dates=
parameter to {{Use dmy dates}} or {{Use mdy dates}} causing applicable dates to be rendered in 2024-11-20 YMD format" but I can't work out what that means.)
Thank you.

Flag script
[edit]Hi! I've been trying to get rid of the flag overload in this page, and thought the FLAG –> COUNTRY option would do that for me. Sentence spacing
[edit]Hi -- would you be willing to disable the part of your general formatting script that turns two spaces between sentences into a single space? I've had to revert this several times on various articles when other editors have edited articles I'm the primary editor for, and then re-add the other useful parts of the edit. It's a cosmetic edit that has no effect on the displayed article, and it's something that is always intentional on the part of the editor who wrote the article -- who is usually the person who's going to go on and do further work on it. I know this has come up before, and I don't know if you have a reason for not removing this functionality, or just haven't got around to it, but I would really appreciate it if you could cut this. Thanks. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 02:12, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

MOSNUM and MOS:ORDER
[edit](continued from User Talk:GiantSnowman) I'll see if I can suggest something but as I said my plate is full for the next couple of weeks. If we just pay attention to Short Description I think that would handle the majority of the cases; templates in the {{For}} class may be harder. David Brooks (talk) 14:06, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
- I just remembered this offer, and it was actually ridiculously easy to fix. The necessary tweak was already coded, on line 845 in Step 3. So at User:DavidBrooks/script/MOSNUM dates.js, I inserted a new line 835 (removing the semicolon on line 834). @GiantSnowman:, do you want to try loading my version instead to see if it works for you? David Brooks (talk) 05:28, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- First, I apologize for the implied criticism in "ridiculously easy". I feel like I spent most of my career poking at the dusty corners of other peoples' code. Second, I'll dig around the script API to see if I can place the Use... templates in the right place according to MOS:ORDER, but don't hold your breath. David Brooks (talk) 15:37, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- How does one add the code again please? I'm not that tech savvy... GiantSnowman 18:23, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @GiantSnowman: Edit User:GiantSnowman/common.js, and on line 6 replace User:Ohconfucius with User:DavidBrooks. Follow the "bypass your browser's cache" instructions. If it looks good and Ohconfucius adopts the tweak, undo that edit because I'll probably be playing with my copy. David Brooks (talk) 23:44, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Oh, and I discovered while implementing this quick fix: the code to put the SD first is executed when the script finds a "Use..." template already in place. In other words, even with the official version, clicking the "DATES to..." link twice will do the trick. And a Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate this and are checking WP today! David Brooks (talk) 16:37, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, I have done that - as a semi-Canadian I celebrated a few weeks ago... GiantSnowman 15:21, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- The new script does not work in a situation where {{good article}} is present, see this which I have now manually corrected. GiantSnowman 15:28, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- It was only intended as a quick fix for when the Use... template is prepended to a Short Description that was previously on the first line, which I think was the source of most of the complaints. In the cited case, the SD was previously on line 2 (the fix would have exhibited the same behavior with any hatnote or other text that appeared before the SD). I'm thinking through a more complex fix that would place the Use... template in the "right" order, but my JS coding has corroded so it'll take time. David Brooks (talk) 16:27, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

David Brooks (talk) 15:37, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Heads-up: in a few hours I'll upload an update to my version (I didn't want to spring it without warning). It will try to put any new Use... template towards the end of the head templates, where it belongs; its analysis is pragmatic without semantic analysis (that's a job for AWB) but seems mostly right. As a bonus, it will move Short Description to the top if possible. There is a potential edge case where it might break syntax, but I've never seen it in practice. There is a possibility of a full-line comment put in the wrong place, which I could probably fix. Otherwise, once I upload it, Ohconfucius and GiantSnowman, and anyone else who's listening, please let me know of any problems. David Brooks (talk) 15:43, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- Will do - thanks for all your work on this. GiantSnowman 18:56, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

- Sorry to mislead; when I said "in a few hours" I didn't expect visitors who have just left :-). I've uploaded the version I described just now; it is significantly different from the version you have. @GiantSnowman: can you give it a try? David Brooks (talk) 00:35, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- Because of focusing on Use..., I only just noticed that script-assisted EngVarB additions also put it on the first line. Not sure when I'll have time to look at that, but the "proper" fix would likely be to factor out the new code and add it to your utils. David Brooks (talk) 16:57, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- Do I need additional code in my common.js? GiantSnowman 17:41, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- @GiantSnowman: No, but it won't do any harm to purge it as before. David Brooks (talk) 17:54, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- I just noticed/realized that the existing code will be thrown off by a {{Multiple Issues}} box near the top. No great harm, but the Use... template will appear on the line before that box, probably violating MOS:ORDER. I'll look into a safe fix, although I recognize this is going far beyond the original charge to only worry about Short Description. David Brooks (talk) 01:44, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- Error located at here - where it doesn't add the tag. GiantSnowman 19:35, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

I uploaded a new version with logic to handle a Multiple Issues block. I can think of three unusual cases where it will still put the Use... template in the wrong place, and plan to fix one that I came across in testing random articles. @GiantSnowman: Enjoy. David Brooks (talk) 19:09, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
- Lovely, thanks. GiantSnowman 16:19, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
- One more change uploaded. It addresses a rare piece of syntax, but I hope it didn't cause regressions. As usual, purge the cache for User:DavidBrooks/script/MOSNUM dates.js.
- Ohconfucius, I could do the same with EngvarB if you want. But it would make sense to not duplicate the format inclusion logic; I could put it in MOSNUM_utils.js, but that doesn't seem logical. Or, as EngvarB doesn't seem to be used much, just use the original simple one-line fix for putting Short Desc on top? David Brooks (talk) 22:00, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
- The updated script has had enough testing now (I made a last-minute tweak to cover a possible case I have never seen, nor am likely to, but I tested it anyway). Would you be so kind as to copy User:DavidBrooks/script/MOSNUM dates.js and then inform GiantSnowman, who is still actively using mine. Thanks. David Brooks (talk) 17:44, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Please add Use British English to articles instead of EngvarB
[edit]EngvarB is only supposed to be used when an article's English variant cannot be identified but clearly does not use American or Canadian English. It's in the documentation. IPs are people too 🇺🇸🦅 20:16, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

Not overlink
[edit]Hi. Facebook, Google, Twitter, and YouTube are not OVERLINKs. Please remove them from your script. Thank you. InfiniteNexus (talk) 17:29, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- User:InfiniteNexus: I beg to disagree. It would depend on the article, for sure. But when navigating, one often sees at least one of these links appearing on a substantial number of articles, particularly in the references section. That indicates serious overlinking to me. -- Ohc revolution of our times 21:50, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Things that have been introduced in recent history are rarely considered overlinks unless they are so ubiquitous that even those in rural parts of the world would likely have heard of it, for example the Internet. But if you disagree, can you at least give users the ability to "opt out" of certain words? InfiniteNexus (talk) 01:18, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- Also came here to raise concerns about YouTube, Facebook, etc being considered OVERLINK. May I ask what you mean by
in the references section
? ~ F4U (talk • they/it) 18:14, 5 December 2023 (UTC)- I once again ask that you give users the ability to have a list of terms to "opt-out" of, if you are unwilling to remove them from the script outright. I have noticed more and more links that do not really qualify as overlinks. InfiniteNexus (talk) 01:52, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
- I don't agree that they're reasonable links. Anyone in the world using the English WP is going to know what they are. Tony (talk) 08:56, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
- But they aren't universal concepts. This is essentially recentism. But since there is disagreement, I have already proposed a compromise to allow users to opt-out of certain phrases that they do not consider OVERLINKs. Does that sound reasonable to you? InfiniteNexus (talk) 22:51, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
- Well, no. First prove that such links attract more than a nano-scopic number of hits. No one wants to read a sea of blue in WP articles. Our job as editors is to ration linking to the most likely hits. Tony (talk) 00:35, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
- "Nano-scopic"?? These articles are consistently at the top of Wikipedia:WikiProject Technology/Popular pages. To reiterate, things that have been introduced in recent history rarely qualify as overlinks. An overlink is something that is understood near-universally, even in the farthest corners of the world. Things like sky, ocean, morning, humor, purple, knife, friendship, circle. Proper nouns that are overlinks are typically countries, cities, languages, and (some) celestial bodies. Never companies or people (, and definitely not websites. InfiniteNexus (talk) 17:50, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
- Actually, there's even a list of proper nouns considered overlinks at WP:OL:
countries
,geographic features
,locations
,languages
,nationalities, ethnicities or descent
, andreligions
. Notice how it doesn't includewebsites
, no matter how high they are ranked on Alexa. InfiniteNexus (talk) 17:51, 9 December 2023 (UTC)- Thanks for reminding me that website is potentially überlinked. Of course there will always be a few articles where links you are seeking to ringfence are "useful", but most people would have heard of the GAFAM enough to warrant not linking in 53k articles. I don't think an opt-out would be appropriate. Many would be links to reference sections,, such as Adrian Lamo, Billy Bob Thornton, Columba or Duke Nukem 3D. Furthermore, I would challenge anyone to justify how such a link is germane in articles such as Dana Rohrabacher (and I'm only on the first page of links to Facebook). The same would apply to links to say United States of America, Canada or India, which may be "interesting" . The count of 602 here would seem a lot more reasonable; I dare say most are likely to be germane in this last case. -- Ohc revolution of our times 21:14, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
- Well, no. First prove that such links attract more than a nano-scopic number of hits. No one wants to read a sea of blue in WP articles. Our job as editors is to ration linking to the most likely hits. Tony (talk) 00:35, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
- Yah, and don't forget, Nexus, that the one in 10 million readers of an article who do want to check out the article on Facebook, etc, can simply spend five seconds typing it into the search box. We don't cater for uber-lazy readers. Tony (talk) 04:04, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:HMS Tamar Emblem.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:HMS Tamar Emblem.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 18:20, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
Fixed scripts
[edit]Hi: I don't know if you saw above, but I am comfortable with User:DavidBrooks/script/MOSNUM dates.js if you want to copy it. Some users, especially GiantSnowman, have been checking it out.
I also did a simpler change to User:DavidBrooks/script/EngvarB.js, just to keep Short Description on the top using the same technique as my first version of the MOSNUM script. It seems fine. David Brooks (talk) 22:08, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
- Yep, the new script works fine, no issues that I can recall. GiantSnowman 10:35, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:HK 60 anniv stamps.png
[edit]Thank you for uploading File:HK 60 anniv stamps.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.
If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Vanjagenije (talk) 23:08, 14 March 2024 (UTC)
"Pull request"
[edit]I've noticed that the dashes.js script does not work when syntax highlighting is enabled. This appears to be because a single textarea element is not used in the editor when syntax highlighting is enabled. The script assumes that there is a single textarea (wpTextbox1).
What I did to fix this is to disable syntax highlighting before editing the source, and then re-enable syntax highlighting afterwards. (I haven't tried it with dashes.js, but it does work on a test script I made. Also I'm not sure mw-editbutton-code-mirror is the correct id to use, but you get the point).
const highlightButton = $("#mw-editbutton-codemirror").find("a");
const highlight = highlightButton.attr('aria-pressed');
if (highlight === "true") {
// Disable syntax highlighting
highlightButton[0].click();
}
...
if (highlight=== "true") {
// Re-enable syntax highlighting
highlightButton[0].click();
}

User:Ohconfucius/dashes.js spaces after pipes in CS1 templates
[edit]Hi Ohconfucius, I recently notes some edits using your script that have been removing spaces before pipes in CS1 templates. For example, this diff made (among others) the following change:
− | cite | + | cite journal|last1=Clement X|first1=Pope|title=Bull |
Having spaces before pipes is the recommendation from {{Cite web}}, and I find that by removing the spaces, we often end up with a long set of parameters with no spaces that causes the line to bunch up in the source editor (especially if a url parameter is near other one-word parameters). Could this be revisited/updated? I don't necessarily consider this a "bug" but happy to submit it to bug reports if you'd prefer. Thanks, Consigned (talk) 07:52, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
Regarding EngvarB.js
[edit]Hi, it is regarding some issues with the EngvarB.js script. What I've noticed is that amongst (xyx) gets rendered as among(xyx) and whilst (xyx) as while(xyx), that is no spaces. And judgement becomes ejudgs. Please have a look. Thanks. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 13:02, 19 June 2024 (UTC)

Overlinking script not removing links in the form [[foo|foos]]
[edit]Hello, the subject line basically says it all here; these links are commonly generated by the Visual Editor. For example, in this edit, the script correctly deleted a standard link to "journalist" but in my subsequent edit, I had to delete one manually that was in the form [[Journalist|journalists]]. Deletion discussion about Dave Smalley (bassist)
[edit]Hello Ohconfucius, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.
While your contributions are appreciated, I wanted to let you know that I've started a discussion about whether an article that you created, Dave Smalley (bassist), should be deleted, as I am not sure that it is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia in its current form. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dave Smalley (bassist).
Deletion discussions usually run for seven days and are not votes. Our guide about effectively contributing to such discussions is worth a read. The most common issue in these discussions is notability, but it's not the only aspect that may be discussed; read the nomination and any other comments carefully before you contribute to the discussion. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.
If you have any questions, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Wasianpower}}
