Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "DannyS712 bot", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because it contains the suffix "-bot", which is generally reserved for authorized bot accounts. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may file for a change of username, or you may simply create a new account and use that for editing. If you have been granted authorization for this bot account, feel free to delete this message. Zinnober9 (talk) 06:15, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

@Zinnober9: This will be a bot account operated by me (DannyS712). For now, it is not approved because I have not being able to create a bot yet. I created this second account per the recommendations given at Help:Creating a bot#Implementation. Please don't block it. --DannyS712 (talk) 16:50, 17 November 2018 (UTC)
@DannyS712: I was not under the impression from that article that users created the bot account prior to having a mission, but then I've never thought about creating a bot account for a task and may have misread it. It seems to me that you clearly know to not to use this account until after you have a mission approved, and give that your main account is not questionable, I don't see a reason to report this account as an unapproved bot. I wish you success with your bot process and approval! Zinnober9 (talk) 04:32, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
@Zinnober9: Thanks! I found out that it was a lot harder to create a basic bot than I thought, so I kind-of gave up (for now), but I don't intend to use the account for anything else. --DannyS712 (talk) 04:38, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
@Zinnober9: Just FYI I've now officially created a bot. Thanks for not asking for it to be blocked! Also, I intend to redirect this page to my main talk, which would move your comments to one of my archives. I'd like to change the heading to "Bot account name" so that it better reflects the discussion. Would that be okay with you? Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 21:38, 28 January 2019 (UTC)
@DannyS712: Fine by me! Congrats! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zinnober9 (talkcontribs) 23:14, 28 January 2019 (UTC)

Mass Message testing

Hey. Just wanted to let you all know that I, your overlord and master, now have mass message sender perms, and wanted to test them out my sending you this message. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 20:14, 27 January 2019 (UTC)

What is the purpose of converting categorization to links on draft articles, like this edit here? --Zaurus (talk) 17:55, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

@Zaurus: See WP:USERNOCAT and WP:DRAFTNOCAT: user subpages that are draft versions of articles should be kept out of content categories and Pages in the draft namespace are not articles, and thus do not belong in content categories. --DannyS712 (talk) 18:06, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
This is a very useful task I think. Before, people would often just remove the categories from drafts, which was off-putting for new users. Thanks Danny!
It might be worth linking to WP:DRAFTNOCAT in the edit summary, though. – Joe (talk) 09:10, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
@Joe Roe: The edit summary links to User:DannyS712/DNC bot, which until now was a redirect to the bot's user page. I'll start working on actually making the page now --DannyS712 (talk) 09:16, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

BRFA trial message

This is a test mass message to trial Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/DannyS712 bot 8. In the line below, I will include a link to DannyS712 that, for the sake of the trial, is considered to have been an error - the link should have been User:DannyS712. I will then have my bot fix the error on user talk pages, marking the edit as minor so as to avoid triggering the "new message" notification.

Files tagged to be moved to Commons

Hi DannyS712. I'm just curious as to why your bot is removing Copy to Wikimedia Commons templates from various files, particularly files which have been reviewed by a file reviewer as being OK to be moved. There's really no need for Wikipedia to locally host files which are released under a free license or which are within in the public domain for one reason or another; so, they are moved to Common which is more suited for hosting images and because it makes it easier for other Wikimedia projects to use the files. There are some files such as non-free content or Template:PD-ineligible-USonly files which shouldn't be moved, but none of these should be tagged for a move to Commons in the first place. If there's something about the licensing of the files your bot is removing the templates from that it finds is questionable, it might be a good idea post something about this at WP:MCQ to let others know so that they can take a closer look. Files are occasionally licensed incorrectly and sometimes even need to be deleted when their licensing issues cannot be resolved. -- Marchjuly (talk) 13:02, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: I was doing it at the request of the person who had added the tags - see Wikipedia:Bot requests#One Shot: Removing Commons eligibility assessment from images reviewed by ShakespeareFan00 --DannyS712 (talk) 18:39, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:19, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

Can you check the operation of this BOT on Draft:Manjaros. There were no user categories only Categories placed by the Template:AfC (which I may not have applied correctly. Thankyou. Djm-leighpark (talk) 22:51, 19 March 2019 (UTC)

@Djm-leighpark: Yes, I agree that the bug was likely caused by the misapplication of the template. I have replaced the substituted version of the template with a transclusion, ensuring that it is categorized correctly in AfC categories without the bot "fixing" it. If such issues arise in the future, I'll try to code a sanity check in the bot. Thanks for letting me know of the mistake, --DannyS712 (talk) 13:15, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

User:Chenthil Vel

At User:Chenthil Vel, the bot has commented out Category:Tamil Nadu Wikipedians, a category specifically intended for user pages. Is this a bot error, or has that category not been set up correctly? -- John of Reading (talk) 08:50, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

@John of Reading: Technically, I think it was a bug with a different bot, but I can't verify it now since the edits have been processed. In the future, I can keep an eye an edits that were not made to a user subpage. --DannyS712 (talk) 09:04, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

(More) A quick look through this account's contributions shows many other similar edits. Also some edits like this one, adding a colon to a category that is already commented out by HTML comments. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:54, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

(More!) OK, I see the problem. For example, Category:Indian Wikipedians is indeed a polluted category, because the article Art of Time Ensemble has been added to it. But the solution is to fix the article, not to edit the user page of every Indian Wikipedian. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:03, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

@John of Reading: indeed, that was the bug - I'll screen for 'Wikipedians' in the category name. As for the html comment - I suppose the edit isn't needed, but I don't think there is any harm in it, and I'm not sure how to avoid it... --DannyS712 (talk) 09:06, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
@John of Reading: I just rolled back all of the ones to base user pages that were wrong. Lessons learned: Ignore categories with "Wikipedian", "User", or "Wikiproject". Anything else you noticed? --DannyS712 (talk) 09:30, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
No -- John of Reading (talk) 09:32, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
This problem is still happening, unless it's a different problem. I found and reverted three or four of them just now. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:51, 6 April 2019 (UTC)
@Jonesey95: Thanks. I thought I had solved it, but once I realized I hadn't, I made it so that it won't edit any root user page, and instead ask for help (see below) so the Rick F. page has been already fixed for. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 07:01, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

These pages are probably possibly still affected. Please check and revert as needed:

I found these by looking for Task 11 current revisions in the bot's contribution history. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 07:32, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

@Jonesey95: Thanks. I had already rolled back the mistakes that I saw, but I went through and checked all of these - all were proper (the user page was a draft that was categorized as an article) but thanks for the list. --DannyS712 (talk) 07:43, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

Category deletion

I'm puzzled as to why you deleted the category of "living people" for Katie Hurley. There was a duplicate category in her article, "members of the Alaska House of Representatives" which was correct to remove. However, Katie is still alive, and turned 98 last month. I didn't restore it, because there is perhaps something I don't understand. Thanks. Activist (talk) 06:01, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

@Activist: Before I made the edit, the categories were:

As you can see, the living people category is included twice. I only removed 1 instance of it. --DannyS712 (talk) 06:02, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
I stand corrected. Thanks very much. Activist (talk) 06:05, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

Michael Tubbs edit

Good day DannyS712 bot, I noticed you made an edit regarding the article and the deletion of the mayor's order number. In case you are wondering where I had got the number of 82, I used this article from Stockton's local newspaper, The Record:

https://www.recordnet.com/article/20041205/a_opinion/312059953

In this article, there is a list of all mayors in the City of Stockton. Do note, since the article was written in 2004, it goes up to Gary Podesto, which the article says he was Stockton's 78th Mayor at the time. Four more mayors had already passed Podesto as of 2019, these being Edward Chavez (79th), Ann Johnston (80th), Anthony Silva (81st), and Michael Tubbs (82nd).

Please review the article to understand my justification. Thank you.

Category:Wikipedia bots using JavaScript

I noticed Category:Wikipedia bots using JavaScript was created for this bot, which is a child of Category:Wikipedia bots by framework. JavaScript is a language, not a framework. The closest applicable category here would be Category:Wikipedia bots with Javascript source code published, which I think is true for your bot. MusikAnimal talk 05:04, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

Is it necessary?

Is this edit (or this) necessary? There was no category on the page since it was wrapped with a main other, so WP:USERNOCAT does not apply. On the other hand, it creates much potential problems if one does not notice it when syncing back to main. --Muhandes (talk) 22:23, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

@Muhandes: it was categorized in multiple non-draft categories (in this case template categories), which is why it showed up as "polluting" the categories. The bot simply tries to fix the pollution. In this case, the category probably came from a different template. I'll look into adding an exception to that, sorry DannyS712 (talk) 22:33, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
I see. I think the bot may be going at this the wrong way. Template categorization is usually done in documentation page, which is transcluded to the template page. Thus the pollution wasn't in fact corrected, the origin was the doc file. I now removed it manually. --Muhandes (talk) 09:57, 2 September 2019 (UTC)

Can your bot do page moves?

Danny, I've been working on implementing the RFC to take "The" out of song and album disambiguators, and find that there are more to do than I want to do by hand. See this quarry querry: https://quarry.wmflabs.org/query/38862 which shows 2815 article results (and I have a short whitelist of 14 exceptions for "(The The ...)" and "(The 1975 ...)" per the RFC. See Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Music#RfC: using "The" in song/album article titles. Let me know if your bot skills could help. Actually, we might want to move redirects, too, in the cases where they are listed in relevant categories. Dicklyon (talk) 02:03, 9 September 2019 (UTC)

@Dicklyon: do you want me to file a BRFA? I'm not going to move redirects, since that would either require suppression of the redirect (without a good justification) or would create a double redirect DannyS712 (talk) 05:27, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
Since my message to you, I got some pushback at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#Dicklyon_pushing_for_the_mass-renaming_of_pages_through_a_small-scale_consensus. Let's make sure that settles down first, then yes, a bot request. Re the redirects, we can discuss later how best to handle them. Dicklyon (talk) 14:51, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
It looks like that's settled down, but maybe best to wait and be sure. In the meantime, at least 3 of us have moved lots manually to test the waters, and found no pushback. But the query shows way too many to do by hand. I haven't heard any great ideas for new exceptions. Dicklyon (talk) 04:56, 18 September 2019 (UTC)
OK, that archived to here with no action and not much indication of anyone agreeing with the complaint. So, can you help me figure out how to automate or semi-automate these fixes? I update the quarry query to exclude the whitelisted bands. Dicklyon (talk) 04:06, 20 September 2019 (UTC)

Thank you.

Bot glitch

G'day Danny, the bot added the Maritime task force to a Milhist banner that already had a Maritime task force field here. Can you ensure that the code looks for a pre-existing field before adding another? Thanks for your work on this. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 06:54, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

@Peacemaker67: thanks for catching that; I already finished (I think) with task 62, but for the future I can look; it just adds a lot more complexity to check each alias for the parameters. Maybe a different task would be to remove all empty or unrecognized parameters from the template? --DannyS712 (talk) 06:57, 20 October 2019 (UTC)
Also, about your revert at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Kaiman-class_torpedo_boat&diff=next&oldid=922142592&diffmode=source - now the page isn't tagged; the parameter was empty. I've filled it in there, but if you undid any more can you make sure that the task force is still added? DannyS712 (talk) 06:58, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

Task 27 disabling draft categories as well?

Hello. In edits such as these: [1] and [2], is there a reason "Category:Sony's Marvel Universe drafts" doesn't survive the filter like "Category:Drafts about media and drama" does? Is that a property of the category itself? Just asking since if I restore that particular draft category, is it going to get removed by the bot again later? Thanks! -2pou (talk) 22:29, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

One more thing, I guess. Should the categories within the {Draft categories| } template get filtered by the bot? See this edit: [3] -2pou (talk) 22:39, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

@2pou: I agree that the category should pass the filter - I'll take a look DannyS712 (talk) 23:57, 23 October 2019 (UTC)

Thanks – I remember not being sure at the time whether to put it in the wrapper or not. I'll try to remember for the future. DannyS712 bot III context question

Hi DannyS712. I recently found that DannyS712 bot III had patrolled some of the redirects I had added in the past few months, whereas these such had normally been patrolled by another WP editor.

Is there a link on your page that explains how this works? How did I get pointed to a bot rather than a human editor?

Thanks. N2e (talk) 20:30, 29 December 2019 (UTC)

@N2e: redirects that can be uncontroversially patrolled because they follow a certain pattern are patrolled by bot. See User:DannyS712 bot III/rules for a breakdown of the different rules that can cause a redirect to be patrolled DannyS712 (talk) 00:09, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, DannyS712, that was exactly what I needed to know in order to research things. I found that my name has recently been added to the whitelist for editors who do this sort of redirect creation by Rosguil. That makes sense; but I had not previously known that.
Thanks for taking the time to develop bots that make Wikipedia a better place for all persons on the globe! N2e (talk) 03:35, 30 December 2019 (UTC)

BEPO

Hi! The bot has automatically reviewed BEPO, which was created as a redirect to BÉPO. Looks reasonable, no? The thing is, BÉPO is only one of the meanings of "BEPO" (the others are listed at the dab page Bepo, so this redirect shouldn't really have been automatically given the pass, but instead reviewed by a human editor and retargeted to the dab page. I don't know if this is an isolated case, or an example of a type that we might see more of down the line (in the latter case, that would mean wading into WP:CONTEXTBOT territory). – Uanfala (talk) 14:50, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

@Arthistorian1977: I have rereviewed it in my individual capacity as a new page reviewer; if I hadn't, the bot would have automatically reviewed it again; is there a reason you unreviewed it? DannyS712 (talk) 22:14, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

Your bot

Speaking as someone who knows nothing about bots, I was wondering whether your bot had the capability of changing citations. The task I had in mind involves hundreds of articles whose main source has a specific format and a seven digit "site" number. This format has been changed to a different format with the same site number. Replacing the dead urls manually is difficult as both old and new are pdf files, with no link to the organisation's main site. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:28, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

@Cwmhiraeth: I don't think I'd be a able to do that automatically, sorry DannyS712 (talk) 23:25, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Draft: Winstanley Estate

Hi Danny, on my "Draft: Winstanley Estate" page I've deleted the "see also" section at the bottom of the page, in response to your comment "Disable the categories on this page while it is still a draft, per WP:DRAFTNOCAT". If this is not what you meant, can I please have some more specific details for what you were referring to? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kip1234 (talkcontribs) 01:25, 18 April 2020 (UTC)

<source></syntaxhighlight> tag mismatches

Hello, @DannyS712: (pinging because I was unsure of whether you wished this to be posted on your talk page, the bot's talk page, or both);

On at least two articles (SQLJ and Zebra Programming Language, to be exact), your bot successfully replaced the closing </source> tag with </syntaxhighlight>, but was for some reason unable to replace the leading <source> tag (probably because both had odd parameters following the initial tag, such as div="..." or width="..."), which entirely broke the code representations on those two articles. I don't know if you have already fixed this bug (as both edits occurred on May 21st), but if not, I would recommend halting the bot and doing so before any other code representations are broken. — TheHardestAspectOfCreatingAnAccountIsAlwaysTheUsername: posted at 04:57, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

@TheHardestAspectOfCreatingAnAccountIsAlwaysTheUsername: yeah, I was only replacing opening tags with specific attributes because source is a valid tag when talking about html; sorry about those. I am not currently running the bot but will endeavour to fix the bot before I do another run, if I do one --DannyS712 (talk) 05:01, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

Bot restoring drafts after they've been moved

Hi, I noticed that while trying to disable the categories on drafts, your bot has been restoring drafts that were moved: see [4] and [5]. Just wanted to let you know. Thanks, SpicyMilkBoy (talk) 00:43, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

On the Poké Ball page, the bot removed the Nintendo drafts category, even though it was a category for drafts.(Oinkers42) (talk) 18:30, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

DRN bad bot edit

The bot reverted my closure of a case. I think it's intended to remove the do not archive tags when someone closes a case but fails to remove the tag, but in my case it reverted the closure. That's improper. Please fix the bot. Regards, TransporterMan (TALK) 19:01, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

@TransporterMan this happened because you edited in the seconds between the bot getting the page content and it trying to save - I'll try to add edit conflict detection DannyS712 (talk) 00:06, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Reminders feature

Do you have any documentation anywhere for task 68, the reminders feature? I would like to use it, and I see it requires /reminders.json and PleaseRemindMe, but I don't see anything anywhere about how to structure the JSON for the reminders list. –Darkwind (talk) 20:26, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

I'll write some documentation at some point, but I would suggest using User:DannyS712/RemindMe to schedule the reminders - I built the bot with the intention of having a script structure the JSON blob for users DannyS712 (talk) 23:04, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

DRAFTNOCAT question

Hey DS, is there any reason the bot only comments out cats from AfC drafts, and not from all drafts? I spend a good bit of time tacking down and commenting out cats from those pages, and it would be great if the bot could do that for me. Thanks in advance, UnitedStatesian (talk) 16:21, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

It should also remove categories from drafts in Wikipedia:Database reports/Polluted categories (2) DannyS712 (talk) 22:28, 21 August 2020 (UTC)
That's what I thought, but it doesn't seem to be doing that if the draft is only in categories on the report that are large. For instance, Category:Italian footballers is on the latest report and has been on the report constantly for a number of days; I can't imagine that each time the bot removes that cat from a draft a new draft comes into that same cat. And here's another example: if you look at this diff, you see the draft was in 4 large categories that were on the report for a month, before I finally clicked through one of them page after page to find the offending draft and DNC it using the script. Is there a way to check the bot's function on these large cats? UnitedStatesian (talk) 04:51, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
I'll try to look into it, but I'm going to be fairly busy in real life for the next bit, sorry DannyS712 (talk) 10:11, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

The documentation at PleaseRemindMe does not actually explain how to use the template. How do you set a date for the reminder? Can you set reminders for other users? Documenting this function at the template would be very helpful, especially since I couldn't find anything on this bot page either. Thanks. VanIsaacWScont 13:11, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm planning to investigate it soon, sorry I haven't had a chance already. My hunch is that the relevant pages have multiple entries in the page triage tables (and so the bug is in the PageCuration extension rather than my bot) and the bot just handles each of the duplicate rows separately, and the solution is just to remove the duplicates, but I'm not sure --DannyS712 (talk) 22:00, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

Updating a mass message

Hello,

I'd like your thoughts on whether it's possible and a good idea to use the mass message corrector task to update the latest admin newsletter.

Since the release of the newsletter, the voting period has been pushed back per this edit by a WMF employee. The latest admin newsletter has the original, but now wrong, dates. Although those who have not seen the change in date will probably see the change on the linked page I thought noting this change may save confusion.

I didn't want to send a mass message with the updated dates, and although AWB could handle it with a lot of Ctrl and S presses I thought a bot task would be better. This technically isn't a simple correction, but I don't think it's major enough that editors should get another ping.

While the bot is also at it, I did send the newsletter with the wrong month in as the section header. It should be "August 2021" instead of "July 2021". If this could be fixed at the same time that would be great. One thought was that if the bot works of section headers only it may cause issues with also updating the previous month's newsletter as this month's and last month's have the same section name. If this causes a problem please don't worry about doing this task.

I've updated the source of the newsletter page at Wikipedia:Administrators' newsletter/2021/8 to reflect the change and I thought that this could be what the bot will change the message to, though the small text included after the news item could instead read "The voting period has been pushed back since the release of this month's newsletter, and your copy of this month's newsletter has been updated to reflect this." to reflect this was a post publication change to the newsletter. I would want to have the strikethrough and insertion as this isn't a simple correction, and noting the old dates may be useful.

What do you think? This isn't urgent. If you can't do this within the month, please ignore as by that point the voting will be over. Courtesy ping to DannyS712 Thanks and happy editing, Dreamy Jazz talk to me | my contributions 21:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Missed review for redirect-whitelisted user

Hi, @DannyS712: I just got a notification saying that Rosguill had reviewed Chuhdary, a redirect I created a few weeks ago. This surprised me, since I'm on the redirect whitelist. Do you know why the bot skipped that review? The sequence of events there is a little odd: It was deleted, recreated, and temporarily fully protected in under 20 minutes. Maybe something to do with that? -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 19:51, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

Tamzin, the script only looks at the most recent edits, so the fact that it was protected within 10 minutes of you creating it is the reason it didn't get checked off. signed, Rosguill talk 19:53, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you mean by "the script only looks at the most recent edits". When you added me to the list, all my (hundreds of) redirects not reviewed at that point yet were automatically reviewed by the bot, no matter how old. ~~~~

Ah, I see. Wouldn't it make more sense to review any case where all editors are whitelisted/autopatrolled/sysops? For instance in this case, there are three editors in the history, but the second and third are both sysops, so all three of us are trusted to make redirects not needing human review.

Redirects not patrolled

Hey @DannyS712, I create a lot of redirects and I wanted to bring up something weird I found. Most of my redirects have been autopatrolled by your bot, except for 15 of the redirects I've created in October (12 on the 4th, 3 on the 12th). All of them were create based on requests at WP:AFC/R and were edited before the bot had a chance to review them. The target wasn't changed, but a sort rule, category, or additional rcat template was added in each of the cases. Is this behaviour intention? Hey man im josh (talk) 15:10, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

Potential bot issue

Hey DannyS712, I just came across Looksmaxx, which was created as a circular redirect. Despite this, DannyS712 bot III had marked it as reviewed. I was just wondering if this was expected behaviour, given that the redirect would need fixing prior to being usable.

All the best, ‍—‍a smart kitten[meow] 21:02, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

@A smart kitten the reason it was patrolled (per Special:Permalink/1209268146) is that if you replace (disambiguation) from the source title the result is equal to the destination title. In this case, thats because the two titles are the same though, so it probably shouldn't have been patrolled. I won't need a BRFA to stop patrolling this case so when I get around to updating the bot in a few weeks I'll be sure to exclude these cases DannyS712 (talk) 22:45, 23 February 2024 (UTC)

Task 69

Can you have task 69, removing do not archive tags from closed DRN cases, make edits marked as bot edits please?

Pinging you because there's a couple sections you haven't responded to here. Thanks, Snowmanonahoe (talk · contribs · typos) 03:05, 20 May 2024 (UTC)
