Information icon Hello, I'm Flyer22. I wanted to let you know that I undid one or more of your recent contributions to Clarence Darrow because it did not appear constructive. Talk page of my user page

I believe you once wrote to me explaining user pages belong completely to the user himself/herself. It seems like Benzband undid what I added to the dessert/cake section you added to my user page's edit page. Does the edit page not belong to me solely? Marc Bago (talk) 22:05, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Also, I smiled at you? It seems as if this page says I smiled at you! I don't even know how to smile at someone! On Wikipedia. But as my user page states, this site is kind of tough for me to figure out beyond reading all the articles.

Double also, I wonder if that Akita article was ever fixed. It really sucked. Marc Bago (talk) 22:08, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Your changes were to the template, and that is what he was undoing. You may have thought you were on your own page, but you weren't.
So too, I tried to leave a message on you talk page, and had to undo it because I interfered with some part of the syntax. So don't be hared on yourself. Editing in Wikipedia is a bitch, and it takes lots of hard knocks to learn.
Thanks for the warm and fuzzy. 7&6=thirteen () 22:17, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Welcoming

Hi, please make sure you are mindful of who you are welcoming to Wikipedia. Today you welcomed Iamnotheretocontributetothiswiki (talk · contribs) to Wikipedia. If you look at the user's contributions (and user name), you can see his account was vandalism only from the outset. We try to avoid welcoming vandals when we notice this kind of pattern in their edits. only (talk) 18:22, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

There should be like a vandal.wikipedia.org where vandals can go and use the site as an outlet for their vandalism. It'd be set up to be a lawless place. It must be that way. It'd be like the no man's land of Wikipedia but totally seperated from Wikipedia. Picture every looting and riot in history and compartmentalize all of this, and then imagine Wikipedia operating in this fashion. And I'm not talking about satirical takes on Wikipedia, this is not what I'm envisioning. I guess eventually a system of power would have to be established, but a democratic environment should not be promoted. Power would derive from the vandals that agree most with each other. There'd be a little teamwork involved. This idea of mine, although it sounds completely ridiculous, I think would be a healthy outlet for potential Wikipedia vandals and would perhaps reroute the vandals from here to there- where they can do whatever they want without upsetting people who actually desire to have valid information, and at the same time these vandals would achieve the same sense of pleasure or accomplishment (to employ no sicker word) they get from disrupting the real Wikipedia. Just a thought. Marc Bago (talk) 19:17, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

A few things

Hi 7&6=thirteen,

You were the first and only person to communicate with me here on Wikipedia so don't really know where to turn for questions or just in general anything at all. You've always been helpful so perhaps you'd be willing to help me some more. Always appreciated and I thank you in advance for spending the time to read this and help. Here's some stuff I've been wondering about:

1) Is there a place to message all (or a fragment) of the moderators or whatever they're called of Wikipedia at once? Like a forum of sorts to discuss things? A place where I can say, "Hey, this needs to be brought to everyone's attention because of x and x," and some discussion formed or attention paid because of my post?

2) If there's a crappy article (like that Akita one from a while ago), how do I mark it in a way notifying the page needs revision? I think I've marked pages for revision before but can't remember if I have or if that's even a false memory of mine.

3) Is there Wikipedia style guide? Seriously, as my personal page states, this place is hard to navigate and find answers. For example, some articles employ the Oxford comma. Some don't. Some use both the Oxford comma and no Oxford comma. It's laziness IMO. Or nobody on here has put their foot down yet as to what style Wikipedia should use. Or maybe nobody gives a crap and I'm the only person on here who actually is picky about this.

4) If I come across an article with a talk page where I see someone has made a valid point or mentioned something of value that is never acknowledged (for months/years/however long), is there a way to somehow call out to Wikipedia users to acknowledge this point? Or make an update of sorts, reminding someone to inspect what a person in the past called for to be inspected?

5) Are you yourself a moderator or some sort of special user sitting somewhere on whatever the ranking/tier system that is used here on Wikipedia? Is there even a tier system? Like regular user/contributor/super member/moderator/overlord? Because I don't remember why exactly you contacted me, I think it was because my personal page was blank, but am curious about the workings of this site outside of reading the information on it.

6) How do I make my user page as cool as yours? :P

Thanks for any and all help. There's quite a few things here and any time you have to spare to help would be greatly appreciated. Marc Bago (talk) 19:07, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

Wikipedia Welcoming Committee can answer most of these questions. They are set up to handle this stuff. So I suggest you go there. I am nobody important, and am a WP: Gnome and have little if any status here. As to the user page question, click on "edit" on various user pages, so you can 'see under the hood.' Just copy, but don't save any changes. Suggest you look at WP:User page. Stay in touch. 7&6=thirteen () 19:24, 24 January 2014 (UTC)
(passing by) After seeing this face, I realize that we have a team player. In addition to the good advice given above, you might try the Teahouse for general questions and discussion. For more important matters there are the noticeboards.
Regarding your #2 above, you can expect to take part in the editorial process and be bold. Use the article talk pages to discuss edits.
3 Wikipedia:Manual of Style (discussions for MOS are held at WT:MOS)
4 If you're not going to fix it or otherwise do the work to address the issue then don't necessarily call anyone's attention to it. Many threads go without responses for various reasons.
5 7&6=thirteen is quite modest in his response as he is a very well-respected and valuable editor and more important than his modesty has let him mention. You could learn a great deal by studying his contribs.
There are admins that carry out many tasks and there are hierarchies of leadership within Wikipedia but no one rules as we are a consensus-driven community. The policies and guidelines are built on discussions and consensus.
Hopefully helpful,

I've given this more thought and I'll unblock you to allow you to participate at ANI. -- Atama 20:56, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

I am not a bot. This was nnt spam. It was a good faith edit. When they said it was poorly sourced, I gave them a better source. I can't even edit at ANI to protest this. An indefinite block shows that our administrators (or at least one)are out of their minds. For someone to conclude that "I have become a single purpose account" to spread spam ignores a lot of facts. 7&6=thirteen () 20:40, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

Your editing pattern has changed dramatically in a very, very short period. I'm open to having my mind changed, and I've asked others at ANI to review my block. But I've looked over your long edit history, and seen your interests and editing ability, and you seem to have taken a sharp turn. I haven't blocked you and moved on, I'm watching your page and hoping for a good explanation. -- Atama 20:48, 19 February 2014 (UTC)
I can't imagine what you mean that "my editing pattern has changed." You claim "I haven't blocked you and moved on, I'm watching your page and hoping for a good explanation." I don't know what that means. You have blocked me. What edits don't you like, sir? I am not here to please you. Please provide particulars. Please unblock me so that I can file a complaint about your conduct with WP:ANI. That you came up with this claim that I am now a spam bot should require some proof, not mere conjecture. 7&6=thirteen () 20:51, 19 February 2014 (UTC)
(edit conflict)I'll unblock you. I may have erred here. Please take this to ANI (and feel free to complain about me as well). If I made a mistake here, it was because I was shocked at what looked like a strange change for you, because as I said on ANI and in my block, you seem to be a great editor. But I believe I can see what I've misinterpreted. -- Atama 20:56, 19 February 2014 (UTC)
You misread the statement, which I understand, because I misread it at first. The claim isn't that you weren't blocked, but an emphasis that this wasn't a drive-by block, by an admin who wasn't going to pay close attention to subsequent edits. While I may not have blocked in these circumstances, I agree that the sequence of edits is perplexing, and I think it is quite prudent for an admin to be concerned. I do hope you weight in at ANI, and while you may well decide to complain about treatment, I hope you will take some time to explain the sequence of edits, which are perplexing.--S Philbrick(Talk) 21:08, 19 February 2014 (UTC)
Here is my interpretation, and I've said as much at ANI. I think that you were inserting the information about the beer because of the 6.66% ABV. The language you used looked like promotion, it looked exactly like something that a marketer would write to promote the beer. Goethan interpreted your edits as having that intention, as did I. The fact that it was placed in 3 different locations at once also increased the suggestion that it was promotion. My initial concern was that you've never been a spammer, you've been a very productive editor who has done much good for Wikipedia, and my intent here was to block you until I was sure that this wasn't the case (because it has happened before to other editors). Once I figured out what you were trying to do, I unblocked you. I'm not quick to block people, I've even been criticized in the past for being too timid about giving editors a block, but given the impression I had here I thought it was urgent. Again, I apologize for my mistake, and I've stated the fact that I made a mistake when unblocking you so that in the future the block should not count against you. -- Atama 21:16, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

For the record: Incident Archive User 7&6=thirteen promoting North Peak Brewing Company & Edit Warring 7&6=thirteen () 17:49, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

My view on one of your edits

Here's why I find the edits perplexing. For example this edit

The edit summary states (in part): Carrying beer measurements to an extreme

In what way is it an extreme? 6.66% ABV is far from an extreme. 66.6 IBU is far from an extreme. I can understand why an article about various measurements might identify examples of extremes, but this is not one. So why on earth was it added? The numbers have some significance to some people, but that is not relevant to beer measurement, so the addition sounds like something a newbie editor might find amusing and thinks belongs in an article. I wouldn't expect an established editor to think so, which is why some wondered what is going on.--S Philbrick(Talk) 21:15, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

And if you didn't like that edit, we could have talked about it at the talk page. The "D" in WP:BRD is discuss. WP:block isn't in that rule. Take a look at WP:3RR. The extremity in the case of which we speak was the use of the 6.66% ABV and the 66.6 IBU. I do not presume your knowledge level on craft beers or microbrews. It was in any event the use of he confluence of those numbers that got North Peak Brewing Company to call it Diabolical, a clear reference to 666 (number). As far as I am concerned, the administrators who initiated this fiasco proved only that they can do anything they want because they have the power. That this can be done without reference to the editing history of the charged individual reflects badly on the decisional process. The attempts to add fuel to the fire by nitpicking my edits was in bad faith; they started the indefinite suspension non one ground (that I was a bot pushing for beer company', then belatedly added 'edit warring' and then sought to say I was pushing a book. My edit history meant little if anything. there was no Presumption of innocence and no WP:AGF. There was no warning, only a preemptive attack.
Some of the moving parties have chosen only to dig deeper and not to apologize. Their choice. Duly noted.
So while I may forgive some of the transgression, I will never forget the lessons learned. 7&6=thirteen () 02:58, 20 February 2014 (UTC)
My knowledge of craft beer and microbreweries is quite limited. So please let me know what I may be missing. I do have more than a layperson's understanding of extremes. I am aware that occasionally some industry will use a word as jargon, and it will have a precise meaning within that industry not exactly the same as in other contexts. If that it the case, it should be identified. Is the word "extreme" used in the beer industry with a different meaning than its usual mathematical meaning? --S Philbrick(Talk) 13:38, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

I'll be 100% honest as to why I said what I did. At the time I still believed that there was no way an editor with 60K edits could make those additions and honestly believe they belonged. I'm frankly baffled at those edits being made by an experienced editor. I don't know if it makes it better or worse to tell you that I'd rather those edits had been made by a compromised account. It'd be much easier to understand--Cube lurker (talk) 03:34, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Sorry to have disappointed you. I thought they were relevant. Particularly as to the North Peak Brewing Company. I've written and read lots of microbrew articles, and these are not all that unusual.
No one bats a thousand. In 60,000 edits, mistakes have been made. And other editors would see at least some of the subjects through a different crystal. I guarantee it.
But I would always start with WP:AGF, particularly with an experienced editor. Cutting off their hands ought to be a last resort. 7&6=thirteen () 03:50, 20 February 2014 (UTC)
One of the locations was on an article talk page of Marquette, Michigan, and it was simply a psssing remark about 666 (number) which someone else had brought up. That one of our esteemed editors decided to bowdlerize my remark and enforce his personal notions of relevancy was officious and overbearing. Nobody appointed him chief censor. He also needs to reread and understand WP:3RR and WP:BRD and reacquaint himself with the rules of WP:ANI. I for one have never been "topic banned", and I believe in collaboration, discussion and consensus first.
As to the word "extreme" it was simply a reaction to the clever marketing device of the Diabolical name and is interaction with the measurement of IBU and ABV. I hope that our esteemed editor will understand that what I put on my {{WP:User page]] is to be left alone, and that he will not presume to censor this too. 7&6=thirteen () 14:05, 20 February 2014 (UTC)
I agree that the marketing was clever. I like clever marketing. But I haven't yet understood what it had to do with "extreme". However, I fear if I ask again, it will be badgering, and you don't need that, so I'll drop this.--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:24, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Repeatedly posted links to a brewery looks like spam. Doing it on a talk page on an unrelated article is undoubtedly spam. Restoring it - more spam. Do it again, and I block your account. Rklawton (talk) 15:13, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

I only have one more state to go. It started adding categories and has morphed into adding, and cleaning up the map locations, cleaning up the units and adding categories and other MoS cleanup. And in the case of some places cleaning the main navigation infoboxes. So you know this started a while ago and the rest of the world is done, or at least for the articles that were there when I visited. So, I'm glad someone noticed and appreciated the work. If you are interested in these, can you look at Sand Point Light? I wound up leaving that one pretty much alone since I could not figure out what this is about. The coordinates at the USCG site don't seem to match ours. So I think the article is about more then one light and might actually not cover the current USCG one. It left me totally confused. Vegaswikian (talk) 18:11, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

There are two Sand Point Lights in Michigan. As the primary editor of the Michigan lighthouse articles (before the Wikifascists messed with me and my templates) I was well on my way to fixing and creating all the Michigan lighthouses. But being a volunteer, I can unvolunteer when they go out of their way to tear up the track I've laid down. 7&6=thirteen () 18:18, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

Hey man

What you said is absolutely correct in that we can agree to disagree, and I'm really sorry for the specific wording/tone I used - I suppose it's unbecoming of a collaborative discussion with the goal (on both our parts) to improve the encyclopedia. I hope there aren't any hard feelings over that and I look forward to working with you in the future. MezzoMezzo (talk) 04:08, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

Understood. It's easy to miscommunicate at a keyboard; no offense taken. So now, enjoy your Dobos Torte. Happy editing.

Alexander Macomb article

At your request, I looked at this article, but I don't see anything that needs improvement--it seems very well done. Most of my participation on this site consists of correcting spelling and grammatical errors; I'm not very good with computers per se and so my textual and informational edits are often problematical. So if I missed anything in the Macomb article, I apologize.

Regarding Commodore Perry--I noticed that he died on his 34th birthday. In my experience, such an event is usually noted in the text (instead of just mentioning his age). I would've made an edit to that effect, but as you'd just thanked me for another edit (the "Elliot"/"Elliott" spellings?), I thought I should leave that to you.

By the way, I just saw the "Smile" that I supposedly sent to you. I'm afraid I don't remember doing that. Rontrigger (talk) 21:23, 13 April 2014 (UTC)

'Twas only a minor edit… I saw your edit to the F-S knife page, and was curious as to who "Yank" Levy was. I have two reference books on the F-S knife (Latham-Wilkinson and Flook)- and keep on meaning to do some work on the article. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 15:41, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

I have made several edits to correct errors that show up when I used MS Word as an editor. The other thing I noticed was that a clarification is needed in the "Military career" paragraph. I have left a marker where I feel a clarification is needed for the general reader. I understand what you are talking about but some readers may not. I didn't have a lot of time to devote to the article right now, but I might look at it later today. Hope this helped. Cuprum17 (talk) 18:50, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

Albert Levy's knives

Thanks very much for your kind words (which I don't deserve!). I found a photo of Levy's collection of knives- it turned out to be from "Life" magazine, copyright, and thus I couldn't upload it. I can't see anything there at the moment which would be a "Levy combat knife"- there's a push dagger, a standard US trench dagger (knuckleduster type), a kukri, a flick knife, a marlin spike, an Arab-style dagger (like the one worn by Lawrence of Arabia), something that looks like an improvised plug bayonet, and various odd stilettos and combat knives (including one that looks like a Hitler Youth-badged dagger). According to the caption "In a fight, he carries one under his sleeve, one suspended round his neck." Actually, the whole collection looks like a photo of the contents of a bin at a police station after a knife amnesty! Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 21:49, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

I've done a lot of work in prisons and correctional facilities (however that may differ -- they look like prisons to me). Although some prisons are worse than oldre. I've done work at Jackson Prison and the Blues Brothers Joliet Prison, and both of those were real hell holes. But I digress. Some of these place have collections of shivs, and it is amazing what someone with a lot of time on their hands can produce from not very much. And a lot of them would have passed through airport security no problem. So what we have is the illusion of security. the Life Magazine pictures are great, but all copyrighted. I would also like to put in a copy of the comic book page. Sigh!
Furthermore. you deserved my accolades. One of my personal pet peeves is that Wikipedia(ns) seems to be retentive about giving out recognition for a job well done. An occasional pat on the back gets a lot more done than a kick in the head. And we seem to gravitate toward the latter, not the former. 7&6=thirteen () 21:57, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Jack Dempsey Comment

Your revert of my edit on the article Jack Dempsey surprises me. The citation leads to this website which does not support the statement that he "instructed Coast Guardsmen on close-quarters hand-to-hand combat incorporating boxing, wrestling, savate and jiujitsu". This is the initial reason that I removed the citation. A better way to cite this paragraph would be to actually cite the book itself with a page reference or two. I don't like to see citations leading to a commercial site that leads into a sales pitch for the item being mentioned. The term "savate" was added to the article by an IP and I question whether Dempsey actually taught that in hand to hand combat; if he did, it would be nice to use a page number reference within the book to back that claim. If you will check the article's history, you will find that I have reverted vandalism in this article several times and it is one of about six hundred articles that I patrol for vandalism and unwarranted changes. I know that you also do the same, and I respect that. I do it because Jack Dempsey was a Coast Guardsman and that is the aspect of the article that I am mostly interested in, but I have reverted blatant vandalism when I found it. The citation provided does prove he authored the book, but says nothing about the content or his method of instruction. This could be referenced better in my opinion and that is the reason that I made my changes. I won't revert your edit, but in the future, it would be courteous to discuss first before reverting the edit of an experienced editor, in my opinion... Cuprum17 (talk) 22:39, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

It wasn't a revert. I assumeD WP:AGF. In any event, I see your point on the citation, and think we should address it; but we should at least reference the book. The savate I find wholy credible. My uncle was an MP in World War II, and got similar training from Yank Levy, the world's dirtiest fighter." As an MP, he had a confrontation with a championship professinal fighter, whoi he rendered unconscious. But a real look at the book would be great. 7&6=thirteen () 23:44, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
I have the book coming and will do a reference, just to make this right. the article says it was co-authored by Bernard J. Cosneck which I don't find to be true. The book was co-authored by Frank G. Menke. Who knows, I may learn something about savate! I am only interested in getting the reference right. Thank you for your response. Cuprum17 (talk) 01:33, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
Two different versions with two different coauthors, I think. 7&6=thirteen () 02:41, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
The Jack Dempsey book I ordered should be here any day and I will see what can be done with it to add to the article on him. BTW, thank you for the barnstar, I didn't do much, but I hope I helped you with a extra set of fresh eyes. Cuprum17 (talk) 01:25, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Salmon P. Chase

Your revert of my edit on the article for Salmon P. Chase surprises me. I only added a reference to an already existing Wikipedia article on Kate Chase (Salmon P. Chase's daughter). Moreover, from what I can see it was not my edit that you reverted, but from the change made by the IP after me. My edit hasn't been reverted at all.

Also, may I add that the edit you DID revert (not mine) in fact shouldn't have been reverted. According to Doris Kearns "Team of Rivals" (audiobook, part 5, about 1hr 30 minutes in) it was indeed Chase's fourth resignation that got accepted by Lincoln and not his third. Thanks in advance for removing any damage to my wikipedia reputation. 80.169.46.101 (talk) 14:11, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Bert Levy

Regarding this - if "not one reference" refers to him as 'Albert', why is the article located named as it is, and not Bert Levy? GiantSnowman 18:28, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

I see a proposal for you to move it to Bert "Yank" Levy, which rightly got rejected. Decide on either Bert Levy or Yank Levy, dependent on what the actual WP:COMMONNAME is, and then start a proper RM. But his given name was 'Albert' and the article needs to reflect that. GiantSnowman 18:33, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
Not one source except wikipedia has ever used "Albert". It wasn't on his birth certificate. It isn't on his book. It isn't in any of the 30+ sources in the article. The American National Biography went out of its way to mention that Wikipedia got it wrong. He is either Bert Levy or "Yank" Levy" or "Yank" Bert Levy (which is what he used on his book. 7&6=thirteen () 18:37, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
Again, if that is the case, why is the article still there? This is especially embarrassing now that it is on the main page - an article called Albert about someone who wasn't called Albert! GiantSnowman 18:40, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
Take a look at the DYK nomination page. I tried to get this fixed, and nobody listened. Do take a look at the Life Magazine article. Most of the sources use "Yank" Levy. If you don't want to bother reading the article, just look at the title. on the references. I made it clear how I felt about the name change, but you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. 7&6=thirteen () 18:43, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
You mean {{[[Template:|]]}}, where you "attempted to get it fixed" after you had expanded the article and after the DYK hook had been approved? Whatever happened to WP:BEBOLD? GiantSnowman 18:47, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

We were in the middle of a seeming congressional debate. It's a G*d* dirty process, and I tried to lead them down the right path. But I wasn't going to unilaterally declare my view (which was the correct one, as I know more about the subject than anyone else in the room, so to speak) to be the final solution. I did not like where any of this led, but felt constrained by collegiality. And moving the article (with all those redirects and prior history) was fraught with technical difficulty, and something I did not want to start and screw up. 7&6=thirteen () 19:58, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Template:Did you know nominations/Albert Levy (soldier) (:Before this is promoted, it would be good if we could finally decide whether the article should be called "Yank" Levy or Bert Levy. If you are worried about the 'dirty' work involved - don't be. Simply propose a RM at whatever name you feel it should be, with your obvious knowledge of the subject, and feel free to proposed me as a closer. I'm more than happy to fix all the broken links/double redirects etc. once consensus has chosen a name. GiantSnowman 20:13, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind offer. I've already said all that, and only some are evidently understanding. I am burnt out on the subject, and the debate. Indeed, I already posted an explanatory note, which is which is like casting pearls before swine. Or as welcome as a screen door installer in a submarine. Right now I have real work for which people pay me a lot of money and which is on a deadline, so this is really not a good time or place for me to get involved further. My frustration is showing. 7&6=thirteen () 20:27, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

I am happy to close - but there is noe enough consensus, and ideally it needs to be a proper WP:RM and not just an informat discussion. GiantSnowman 15:41, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

The microbrewery cat is being upmerged per Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2014_April_2#Category:Microbreweries, and the use of the term as a neutral and clearly understood identifier in the lead is insecure, so is being replaced by the neutral brewery. How to Fight Tough by Jack Dempsey

Well, it's been almost a month getting here, but I finally received the book and it is next on my reading list. Almost every page has a picture of the fighting technique that Dempsey is discussing. I kind of skimmed it real quick so I don't know much about what it says just yet. The version of the book I found was a reprint of the original 1942 version and was reprinted by Palladin Press of Boulder, Colorado. ISBN 978-1-58160-315-6. I will let you know more about it after I get it read next week. Cuprum17 (talk) 19:25, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

I haven't seen that book, but Yank Levy's Guerrilla Warfare was quite graphic and a good read. Over 500,000 copies sold. Unfortunately, he was wrong in that the techniques can be adapted by bad governments (not just democratic ones) and bad people. the Growth of the IED in our recent involvements makes one long for Gulf War I and Saddam Hussein, where there were at least some rules, and some limits on what the sides were willing to do to each other. 7&6=thirteen () 19:31, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

User:WilliamJE, I have no idea and and no opinion. I did add to this article a list of generic sources on SCOTUS justices in "Further reading" (something that should be in every biographical article for them I think, and a job I did not finish), and I would presume that the answer is there. I've reverted you there. The source you put in the infobox doesn't say he was a Sergeant, the other Smithsonian page only says he was put forward for promotion to Sergeant. I've written to them asking for their evidence, but we do have a source that states clearly there is no documentary evidence for this. This all seems extremely unlikely - the US Army doesn't have any procedures for this so far as I know and no official wardogs for that war I believe. This nomination was reviewed and given a tick. Two weeks ago EEng asked if any other editors thought the article should be deleted. He has had no takers and was told by the reviewer User:TheQ Editor that it was notable. There are more than 30 sources in the article WP:GNG wold seeem to apply. He is recognized by the
Florida Arts Council and is in the Florida Hall Artists Hall of Fame. His works are in many important collections, and he is acoording to the Florida Secretary of State, perhaps the most important public artist in Florida.
In 2004 he received the National Sculpture Society's American Artists Professional League Award for a traditional realistic depiction in sculpture.
User: Hawkeye7 actually promoted the DYK, and then decided to kill the DYK.
Now you summarily killed the DYK and closed the discussion without notice? This needs to be reopened until the belated delete matter is resolved.
We need the matter reopened by an administrator.
I know it can't be run until this is the deletion is resolved.

You reverted my changes to Trial film because "getting rid of Judgment at Nuremberg and Witness for the Prosecution is wrong." But I didn't get rid of them. They are mentioned earlier in the article under The American Bar Association's list and American Film Institute. The section from which I removed them is called Other films, so it shouldn't duplicate ones already listed. On the other hand, when you reverted my change, you removed my addition of The Wreck of the Mary Deare, which had NOT been mentioned earlier. Category & sub-categories

Hello 13. I don't know how to describe or fix this problem, but Category:Afghanistan-Iraq War Memorials has category & subcategory problems. That is, it is both a sub-category and parent category. (Click on the triangles & you'll see.) Can you fix? Thanks. – S. Rich (talk) 16:14, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

S. Rich, Sorry, but I don't (haven't) done this. Creating categories is something I leave to my betters. The problems you correctly describe are beyond my knowledge. I've posted notice of the creation of the category in a couple of places, and I imagine someone with more knowledge will sort it out. 7&6=thirteen () 16:21, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
I saw the change at Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial & the notice you posted. I think I'll try to fix. I believe the problem exists because Category:AF=IZ has parent categories listed. – S. Rich (talk) 16:36, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Edit summaries

Probably not helpful to just copy-and-paste your contribution to an article into the edit summary, it's flooding my watchlist right now and doesn't help anyone work out what you've edited or why, as this info is available in the article history. Good work on the Dickin stuff mind you. The Rambling Man (talk) 18:50, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

OK. Sorry. I'm done. What would you suggest? And I'm not being sarcastic! This just happened that there was a lot of overlap here, and it isn't in an area that I normally frequent. 7&6=thirteen () 18:54, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
No, fair enough, it just happens that I created most of the Dickin Medal recipient articles so my watchlist is flooded! If it was me, I'd just say something like "expanding and referencing" or similar. I appreciate what you're doing in any case! The Rambling Man (talk) 18:57, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
OK. I've always tried to be factual.
As I said, you and I just happened to have an overlap due to a coincidental shared interest. I thought these articles all needed work. I only did the dogs, but I think its true of the other articles. Haven't looked at the cat, horses and pigeons. But I'm more than glad to not take those on, and will leave it up to your good offices. I'm supposed to be doing real life work anyway right now. 7&6=thirteen () 19:04, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
When I see your name in an edit summary, by and large I just ignore it. I know your edits are going to be an improvement, so there is nothing to see here — move along. 7&6=thirteen () 19:07, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
All I'm asking is not to copy-and-paste your edit into the edit summary. That's completely unhelpful. Everything else is fab. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:02, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
OK. Cheers. 7&6=thirteen () 21:55, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

Here are the first two sentences from the Nelson reference, p. 1. "Artus Van Briggle was truly a master artisan and a giant in American art pottery. While highly talented as a painter, he is best known for his sculpture and designs in clay, which he combined with his rediscovery of a formula for a dead matte glaze which had eluded makers of artistic pottery since the Chinese pottery of the Ming Dynasty." dnforney (talk) 20:49, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

It's open season, and these are unlimited (safety not recumbent) bikes, so the records will fall repeatedly I think, at least for a while. One can also assume that anyone who rides to a record will be heavily scrutinized for the usual suspects, so doping will either be nonexistent or more creative. That part is all very sad. 7&6=thirteen () 16:18, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

"Revert"

Regarding this edit of yours, I think you're confusing "revert" (which simply means "undoing or otherwise negating the effects of one or more edits, which results in the page being restored to a previous version", a description that would apply to what happened here) with "rollback", the anti-vandal tool that's not to be used lightly. Just a note to clear up what appears to be a misunderstanding. Huon (talk) 23:25, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

You are right. I use rollback very sparringly. And even if I undo, I tread lightly and put in an edit summary that shows my intent. Thanks. 7&6=thirteen () 00:14, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

Doyle Doss

Hiya: I added the actual click through link on the Doyle Doss sex offender registry page. Mr. Doss is well-known in this area for using his Wikipedia page to attempt to impress people with his bona-fides; which are pretty much zero. The New York Times article was written directly from his press release. I tried before to have this article removed and was overruled; I still do not believe this MAN is notable, the hummingbird feeder is only available from him; as are the "Candle heeters". It's like a Nigerian chain letter being repeated in Wiki as truth to see this one with a Wikipedia page. Ellin Beltz (talk) 16:13, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

I've seen you heavily edit Gloria Stuart; you are probably more familiar with that artile than me. User:Miramaribelle asked on my talk page whether the "written like a personal reflection or opinion essay" tag could be removed. Huon (talk) 21:40, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

User:Miramaribelle, I would advise that you take a hard look at this. Such phrases as "a standing ovation from her peers" drips with too much schmaltz. If we can write this from a WP:NPOV (less warm and fuzzy), I think we can lose the tag. I am with you in that I hate drive-by-taggers who throw on a tag, and can't be bothered to fix it. The long shaft was the fashion in this part of the U.S., namely when sailing on very large freshwater lakes (e.g., Lake Huron. I assumed the dealer had a good reason. Longshaft outboards offers some rough guidance. Not having tried the alternative, I can't dispute what you say. It probably depends on the waves (size of the body of water, amplitude, etc.) in which you use it. 7&6=thirteen () 13:58, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

Citation formatting

Hey, 7&6. I have reverted your changes to the Robert Cade article footnotes. The existing footnotes were consistently formatted, following a more traditional style than that rendered by the cite templates. The use of the cite templates is not required by either GA or FA standards; I ask that you respect the existing format choices. Thanks. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 13:58, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

I may have gotten the date wrong. Was this a 5X expansion, or did you bring it 'live' out of a sandbox somewhere? 7&6=thirteen () 21:26, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
I understand that. If wouldn't be a problem to make things such as the sires into an alphabetical list? Just a suggestion. No accusation intended. I also know that at DYK you can encounter persons who will hallucinate copy vios even when the words are different. They start talking about "close paraphrasing" and "structure" and you don't want to deal with that. 7&6=thirteen () 21:56, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
Ok - I'll see what I can do, but I think there's a bigger issue. Something weird happened when I moved the article from my Sandbox to the mainspace. It redirects from another article I created in the Sandbox, Gabor B. Racz - See diff [6]. Uh oh. Any idea how to fix it, and prevent it from happening again? When I click on my Sandbox, it redirects to North American Piedmontese cattle. Whadda mess!! Thanks for helping. AtsmeConsult 22:06, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
No. The history clearly show that your article went to main space in December 22. You are clearly new enough, long enough. So nothing there to worry about. Just heed my advice on putting the article into a cuisinart, particularly those where you have commonalities with other sources. I know this is unfair, but take a look at Bill Smith (fell runner) and you'll see that I've been there, done that. And you don't want to go there. 7&6=thirteen () 22:11, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

Not sure what it is you want? Two tools I am using a lot: Earwig's Copyvio Detector and https://tools.wmflabs.org/fengtools/reflinks/ - This is the stable version of Reflinks. Paste the title of the article into the Page name textbox. It's also possible to choose using plain links or {{cite web}}: Empty citation (help) for the output. YOu can choose the article or a specific edit by number. If that doesn't answer your question, let me know. 7&6=thirteen () 11:35, 24 December 2014 (UTC)

Thank you. If I can help, let me know. You can learn by doing. You can also learn by clicking on the "history" of an article, and comparing the differential edits. It's work, but it is highly educational. I can't help you withi Visual editor, as I don't use it, and really don't know anything about it. Best of luck. 7&6=thirteen () 22:59, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

Overzealous editors

Had to revert and manually edit some of the changes that were made to Piedmontese. The edits changed the intended meaning - obviously made by editors who aren't familiar with cattle or the terminology, and lacked your savvy about such things. You're too speedy

Now that I've actually had the time to type in my reasons at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Doyle Doss, please go back over, read what I wrote and then take a stand? I had to override an "edit war" tag to enter my reasons for proposing deletion because you voted to oppose before I had an opportunity to present the case for deletion. I kept your entire comment, but humbly request that you look at it again and take a look at the sources which are obviously from press releases. Wiki notability is very careful to say "The evidence must show the topic has gained significant independent coverage or recognition, and that this was not a mere short-term interest, nor a result of promotional activity or indiscriminate publicity, nor is the topic unsuitable for any other reason. Sources of evidence include recognized peer reviewed publications, credible and authoritative books, reputable media sources, and other reliable sources generally." One article in New York Times, in response to a press release and a YouTube, and a personal website is not "significant independent coverage," else the wiki would be full of people with Etsy accounts but no other notability!! Ellin Beltz (talk) 20:49, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Ellin: The NY Times article does not appear to be a press release to me. 7&6=thirteen () 20:57, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
It clearly says in the article that it was written due to the subject sending in an email which included link to his YouTube. Thus it fails the filter "and that this was not a mere short-term interest, nor a result of promotional activity or indiscriminate publicity," as I stated in my list of reasons. Since the subject initiated the discussion with the reporter, it is a result of promotional activity. Ellin Beltz (talk) 21:16, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
I see what you are pointing to. I think that anybody who makes it into the pages of the NY Times has more notability than me. He didn't pay for the space. Whether that is enough or not I leave to you or others. Good luck. 7&6=thirteen () 21:23, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Kidding, but I noticed you may have not gotten the ping I sent from Template:Did you know nominations/Stripped Classicism. It's been languishing here since the end of last year. As the nominator, do you feel like continuing with it? Fuebaey (talk) 01:42, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

Sorry that you dislike my name. Given my history, its rather late in the game to change it.
Fuebaey, I was aware of your edits, as I was watching the page.
If course, I feel like continuing. It is long enough, new enough and well cited enough for a DYK.
I understand your concerns. However, I am at a loss where to begin to satisfy them and you. I had hoped that User:Carptrash would jump into the breach, as he is more in tune with the nuances of these architectural styles, and working with the matrix that he created in the article. I would like to come to a consensus on how we all can proceed to get this up to your standard. 7&6=thirteen () 01:52, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
Apologies, I meant no slight (my poor attempt at a joke, highlighting how buggy the notifications system is). This is just a courtesy ping, given that it's been reviewed and near the top of the nom list. I haven't actually looked at the article. If you feel it's good enough as it is for DYK, you could ask the original reviewer or another person to look at it again. Fuebaey (talk) 02:19, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

Your help

Thanks for dropping by, and no, I don't mind, nor do I own the article, though I would like to shepherd it through GA, if not this time then maybe next time around. It is good to know I'm not alone in thinking it's ok.Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:31, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

You are Preaching to the choir. Amen, brother. 7&6=thirteen () 16:33, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
The ref "[1]" seems to be wrong, perhaps the second half of it needs moving. Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:21, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

On the 'historical antecedents', we need to be very careful to include only items directly connected to Russia, as the second paragraph seems to be; the first paragraph probably belongs not here but in military deception, unless you are thinking of tying the two paragraphs together more strongly. Otherwise we're pulling the article away from its distinctive Russianness towards the general topic, possibly creating a fork. Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:39, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Could it be put in as a separate section such as "Historical antecedents." The concepts did not originate with Lenin or Zhukov. I was trying to give this more historical context. 7&6=thirteen () 16:42, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
I put in "Historical antecedents" as a section, and moved the material. It leads in directly to the Soviet doctrine.
I also have a problem with one of the citations, which uses author "authority control," I don't really know what that is. I would change the citation to a template, but don't want to screw something up. I would also like to add this author link: Samuel B. Griffith if it is the right one. 7&6=thirteen () 17:37, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
I can't see "authority control" anywhere. Your Griffith is surely correct, I've linked him and merged the paragraphs per discussion. Chiswick Chap (talk) 17:48, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
I saw it in the Art of War article. Put in a template. Thanks. 7&6=thirteen () 18:00, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Re yr cmt: Yes, there's something wrong over there. WP at least has clear policies on weasel words. I'm against recentism (an unconscious or unthinking bias in many articles); luckily most of the recent stuff in this case is from sources we can reject. I hadn't expected this history article to be political; I think that with most editors it wouldn't be; but it's better we talk here, if anywhere. Thanks. Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:53, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

On your suggested source, I'm not sure that's a WP:RS, and it's certainly recent and political as in the paragraph above. Personally, I'd wait five or ten years for the dust to settle, and perhaps it will have been written about more objectively by then. I'm totally against any suggestion of sneaky behaviour; that charge would in any case stick just as well to British deceptions in WWII. So I'd much rather not go near it. Please. Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:08, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

I do think it applies. But "Nothing to see here" apparently works. It reminds me of pictures in 1939 where Joseph Goebbels flashed pictures of a map of Germany, showing with big arrows the direction of the Poles in their "invasion into the heart of Germany." Nothing to see here is going on in GA, too. But I asked your opinion, and now I've got it. 7&6=thirteen () 13:16, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for suggestions. I found Pirnie 1985, a really very well written analysis, that happily confirms what's in the WWII part of the article as the major details. Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:49, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
Good material. 7&6=thirteen () 20:51, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

We will nominate then cure. If you have a close paraphrasing issue, fix it. I use my enhanced Oxford Thesaurus (which came with the word processor Corel WordPerfect a lot. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy. You can do that after it is nominated. What do you think should be the hook? If it turns out we are too late, so be it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. 7&6=thirteen () 23:33, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
CAN*T fix it. I can't paraphrase. No talent. Hafspajen (talk) 23:36, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
Hook? Well ... 2 kings in the same picture? Hafspajen (talk) 23:37, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
  • DYK ... that the painting depicts three brothers and two future kings? Eh? A woman's place is in the home...? What kind of page is that ..

Hafspajen (talk) 23:40, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

I am concerned about two things with this nomination. You put it out in dribs and drabs, so to speak. Over a period of several weeks. This may get us shut down on timeliness, or depending on which iteration they decide is the base, potentially a problem with the size of the expansion. I would say that it is a wonderful little article, and that the door to a GA is open, at which time you can then get a 'no brainer' DYK. But I'll go forward if you want. Letameno. 7&6=thirteen () 23:49, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
You say it was a new article (main spaced) on the 17th. I think we should go for it. OK. 7&6=thirteen () 23:51, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi, I pass out the DS alert for climate change to most climate article editors. Doesn't mean anything but FYI NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 15:14, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Good addition

Thanks, that's good. Needs some cleaning up NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 15:45, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Dope slap, should have checked the time. Have at it NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 15:46, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
No problem. I know this is a bigger problem. The climate change deniers and the global warming derisionists don't want to actually look at evidence. And considerations of cost have overridden receptivity to evidence. The chairmen of the U.S. Senate committee wrote a book supporting human caused global warming, but now says that he believed in it until "I saw the cost." I am not trying to push a political agenda at all.
And local weather is different than global warming. I for one expect a repeat of last summer, a very cold summer in Michigan, as the Great Lakes are once again completely frozen over (or about to be). 7&6=thirteen () 15:52, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
Nordhouse Dunes could be frozen solid now, but buckle up. NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 17:23, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

I was getting beat up over at Little Ice Age. like you, it got my focus. Like you, I'm not going to edit war. Indeed. the Wikipolice have put warnings and sanctions in place in that article to enforce their orthodoxy. So I am going away quietly. I removed it from my watch list, as it is a fight not worth fighting, and above my pay grade. I am hoping that 21st Century mini-ice age conjecture will be left alone or developed further.7&6=thirteen () 16:19, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Your secret is safe with me. I created that trifle (electronically, I mean).
Now if you can just come to my neighborhood bar, Dragonmead is within 2 miles, we can share a pint. I'll buy. And the food is actually pretty good, too. It was almost nonexistent before, and was woeful at that. The two problems with this establishment are that the service can be spotty, and it has been take over by Yuppies, instead of the old crowd. I think you can find some comments about the former on line, but the latter is left to the afficionados and devotees of Craft Brew. They also went through 'growing pains' in their technical transition, and some of the beer did not live up to my expectations. But I hope for the best. 7&6=thirteen () 21:41, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

Brown Windsor Soup

Hello. Not sure if you have followed the discussion on the talk page. The situation has changed significantly. Another editor has found unequivocal evidence of Brown Windsor soup existing in the 1920s and 1930s. I posted that information in the article, but you deleted it. I will be happy to email you the PDFs of newspaper clippings verifying this. The theories about this being a legend, or conflated with the soap etc.. are hogwash. The soup was real and existed and there is concrete evidence for it. We can still provide multiple POVs but the article really needs to emphasis that this soup existed in the 1920s and 30s on the menus of restaurants. -- GreenC

User:Green Cardamom Thanks for calling that to my attention. You are correct. I missed that. I do think that deleting the other material is the wrong route. I would rather integrate it and expand. I can't get to this for a couple of days. Perhaps you can take a whack at it. 7&6=thirteen () 14:40, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
I'll take a look. I know you worked on it and don't mean any disrespect. Thanks for reconsidering. The offer is still open to send the menus, seeing them in person makes it more apparent the soup wasn't fiction (at least in the 20s and 30s). -- GreenC 14:46, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
Feel free to send them. If you need my e-mail address, just e-mail me via wikimail and I'll reply so that you can send it direct. I didn't mean any disrespect either. If there are articles it would be good to get a citation, even if we don't have access to the British newspaper archive. Personally, I would like this to be a GA someday. 7&6=thirteen () 14:49, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Can't really be a dead link, http://www.tfsimon.com/auvers-sur-oise.html ...

Vincent van Gogh is a symbol for the eternal problem with mankind: his questing for the meaning of life and the truth. In the course of his life everybody discovers life has no meaning, difference works up hatred and the truth has several versions... Vincent's life was short but his struggle for love and recognition was long and in the end unbearable. He had to get rid of the mortgage everybody gets from the so-called education you get from your parents and other people in your early-life. Everybody is a prisoner of his time and education. Vincent, too, but he wanted to do a lot in his own way, as a consequence people didn't understand him, were even hostile to him; this made him sometimes rebellious and he often felt lonesome. But as many people with mental problems, his imagination played a prominent part in the way he believed other people thought about him and his art. Van Gogh is often thought of as a loner, yet during his career he was surrounded by artists. He brought people together, provoked discussions, acted as a mediator between temperamental artists, and encouraged experiments and exhibitions. These artists in turn influenced Van Gogh’s personal and artistic development. During his ten-year artistic career, from 1880-1890, Van Gogh was highly creative. A full 864 paintings and almost 1,200 drawings and prints have survived. He was active in The Netherlands, until the call of France was irresistible, like for so many artists before and after him (like Tavik František Šimon). From 1886-1888 he was in Paris, from 1888-1889 in Arles, from 1889-1890 in Saint-Rémy, where he tried to recover from a mental illness and finally, from May, 20, 1890 until his death, July 29, 1890, he was in Auvers-sur-Oise, in order to recover completely. In May 1890 Vincent visited his brother Theo and his family in Paris and then settled in Auvers-sur-Oise, a little village at the river Oise around 30 kilometres from Paris. The town was chosen because Paul Gachet, a doctor, artist and collector, was living there, he agreed to take care of Vincent. Vincent managed to find himself a very small room in an inn owned by Arthur Gustave Ravoux and immediately began painting the environs of Auvers-sur-Oise. Van Gogh came to Auvers-sur-Oise, on May 20, 1890. “Auvers is very pretty,” he wrote to Theo, “there is countryside all around, typical and picturesque.” Auvers was an artists’ village, where painters such as Armand Guillaumin, Camille Pissarro, Charles-François Daubigny, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Paul Cézanne had already worked.

If you can't acces it, this is what it writes. Hafspajen (talk) 20:50, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Throughout June, Vincent remained in good spirits and was remarkably productive, painting some of his best known works. The initial tranquillity of the first month in Auvers was interrupted, however, when Vincent received news that his nephew was seriously ill. Theo had been going through a most difficult time throughout the previous few months: uncertainty about his own career and future, ongoing health problems and finally his own son's illness. Following the baby's recovery, Vincent decided to visit Theo and his family on 6 July and caught an early train. Very little is known about the visit, but Johanna, Theo's wife, writing years later, would suggest that the day was strained and fairly tense. Vincent eventually felt overwhelmed and quickly returned to the more quiet sanctuary of Auvers. During the next three weeks Vincent kept on painting and, as his letters suggest, was reasonably happy. To his mother and sister Vincent wrote: "For the present I am feeling much calmer than last year, and really the restlessness in my head has greatly quieted down." (Letter 650) Vincent was absorbed in the fields and plains around Auvers and produced some brilliant landscapes throughout July. In Auvers Van Gogh painted more then 70 pictures. During these last weeks of his life it was only due to his work that he could forget about his illness, and he painted as if possessed. Among the works of the period are a religious work after Delacroix, The Pieta, The Church of Auvers, multiple landscapes and portraits. On the evening of the 27th July 1890 Van Gogh went at dusk into the fields and shot himself. With all his strength he managed to drag himself back to the inn; here he died two days later in the arms of his brother, who had hurried to his side. Besides Theo and Dr. Gachet some friends from Paris, amongst them Bernard and “Père” Tanguy, took part in the funeral.

Also this... Hafspajen (talk) 20:51, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

Vincent van Gogh repeated the motif of peasant huts on many occasions: "In my opinion, the most marvellous of all that I know in the sphere of architecture is huts with their roofs of moss-grown straw and a smoky hearth," wrote van Gogh in one of his letters. The thatched roofs seem to be just as much an organic part of nature as the hills, fields and sky. The hilly relief of the distance allowed the artist to accentuate the dynamics of space, which he reinforced through the use of colour contrasts. The tense, wavy brushstrokes and lines convey the artist's perception of life and the world. During these last few weeks of his life, Van Gogh painted a few portraits but mainly a large number of landscapes among which is "Les Vessenots," the part of Auvers where Dr Gachet -the first owner of this painting- lived. The work is characteristic of Van Gogh's pictorial language at the end of his life, in which he combines very reduced and schematised compositions with a narrow palette of luminous greens and yellows and the use of agitated and nervous brushstrokes which follow a waving and repetitive rhythm. The composition is a horizontal one with a typically raised horizon, grouping together a number of old cottages, some with thatched roofs, alongside extensive fields of wheat and a few waving trees. Although he always painted in front of the subject, the painting is a very personal vision of the landscape. Van Gogh transformed what he saw into something profoundly personal, giving visual form to the emotions which the landscape in front of him inspired in him. The fertile fields around Auvers produced conflicting feelings within him: the sensation of freedom which he had in front of these broad fields was counterbalanced by melancholy and a sensation of loneliness brought on by the sight of the wheat.

And this. Hafspajen (talk) 20:53, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

!Vandalism

I can understand that you are nervous to write on my talk page but this matter does not require email. OK, I unreservedly withdraw all accusations of vandalism. Regarding your second !vandalism, a moment's investigation shows what happened: you edited an old version of the page like this. It is an easy mistake to make - I have done it myself. But as to NewJerseyLenape (talk · contribs), I will say most emphatically: just because someone has provided an email address that is no reason to force them to use email. There was an an hint that this user might be persuadable to make useful contributions so it was a good thing to teach them talk page conventions asap. If you were to do the utterly boring thing of working through my edits to my talk page, you would find that I regularly, silently remove email addresses. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 21:13, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

User: NewJerseyLenape Talk was where I suggested he write you direct. He had himself provided the e-mail address, so I think "force to use e-mail is" a forced conclusion. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Happy editing. 7&6=thirteen () 12:40, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

Houses at Auvers

:Ernest Lawson - New England Birches

Hello 7&6=Thirteen -- I see you've been working on Houses at Auvers. All your edits look fine. Earlier, at the request of User:Hafspajen, I paraphrased some large paragraphs that Hafs left on my talk page (worked on it in my sandbox). I had done it in two stages. Hafs added the first half of the section Houses at Auvers#Auvers about two days ago, and then I added the second half today. However, in the interim, a short sentence was added after the first batch so that there is no longer a smooth transition between the two halves. I thought I'd point it out to you so that, if you feel like it, you could help smooth this over. I'll copy the last sentence of the first batch, the short added sentence, and the first sentence of the second batch, here:

  • Throughout the months of May, June and July 1890, van Gogh painted many paintings, including the fields and many of the peasants' huts in the area.[8] Van Gogh was fascinated by the village.[9][10] He seemed to find the thatched huts especially fascinating. (This is followed by a quote to illustrate the last sentence.)

Now, it goes from the huts, to the village, and back to the huts. There is also now "was fascinated by" and "fascinating". I was going to delete the middle sentence since I think the third sentence is sufficient, but I hesitated because I saw the middle sentence has two reference numbers. Since Hafs told me he had already added the reference for the material s/he asked me to paraphrase, it is possible that those references are the same as the ones for all the paraphrasing I did, both before and after that sentence. What do you think? Should the short middle sentence just be deleted?

If you look at my sandbox at User:CorinneSD/sandbox#Houses at Auvers, you will see that I struggled more with the last part than I did with the first. The original paragraphs are on my talk page at User talk:CorinneSD#New article. I tried my best to reword the most important parts. I don't know if the parts I put in parentheses (such as "luminous greens and yellows") are too close to the original text. Can you look at that? Thanks. CorinneSD (talk) 00:30, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

Did a major rewrite and copy edit to integrate the material. You may need to stipple in extra citations to cover the text. I put it into a Cuisinart and dumped it into a pan. 7&6=thirteen () 00:50, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

I had never seen that Earwig's Copy violation detector. Is that a serious website? What percentage confidence does it have to be above, or below? I see you didn't remove that sentence, "Van Gogh was fascinated by the village," that I felt disrupted the flow of sentences. Perhaps you haven't yet had a chance to look at it. I don't know. I only know that it is a serious tool that is very helpful. The one limitation on it is that it will also find sources that used/plagiarized wikipedia articles. So You should be aware. 7&6=thirteen () 16:53, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for your e-mails with the additional material on van Gogh. The first one (in English -- the only one I can read) was very interesting. I never knew about that period in his life or the details of his early adulthood, including that he tried to become a preacher. I also liked the three paintings that were included in the article. I had never seen those before. I wonder if they are in the van Gogh article. The other article (in Dutch) was interesting in the way it was put together, with the supplementary images moving in from the sides. Thank you again. CorinneSD (talk) 01:56, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

CorinneSD, I'm confused. The second one was from the BBC and also was in English. I have sent you send you the text via e-mail. 7&6=thirteen () 02:27, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

I put in some text and quotes. Buttoned it up, I think. Take a look at your leisure. No worries; no hurries.
7&6=thirteen, first, thank you for your e-mail. Second, I see em-dashes with spaces either side of them in the article. Rather than just change them, I thought I'd point to something in MoS regarding dashes: MOS:EMDASH. You can use either unspaced em-dashes or spaced en-dashes. CorinneSD (talk) 22:59, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
Please change them to suit The WP:MOS. Thanks. 7&6=thirteen () 23:00, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
I made the necessary changes. Then I noticed date ranges with a hyphen. See MOS:ENDASH. Do you want me to change the hyphens to en-dashes? CorinneSD (talk) 23:12, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Honest, you DON'T NEED my permission. Have at it. I do so much copy that I will – I guarantee it – make misstakes. 7&6=thirteen ()

I know you both know what you're doing, but I was surprised to see all those little reference numbers in a row in the lede. I don't remember seeing so many in a row in other articles. Is that all right? CorinneSD (talk) 23:13, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
I put them in so I think its all right. It happens that there are a lot of good sources directly on this particular painting. I follow WP:Bold and WP:No rules. This happened to be the most effective way to present the story. Do you have a contrary opinion and a better option? 7&6=thirteen () 23:25, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
No. I know nothing about adding references to articles. I just hadn't remembered seeing that before. CorinneSD (talk) 23:39, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

  • I don't think it is quite ready, no. No collision. However, my sense was that these were very basic and not very well protected. Thin walled, thin doors. Flimsy. Of course, the 58 did not even have a seat belt. This is with the benefit of 40+ years of intervening technology. My Lincoln LS is a far larger and safer car and gets mileage that betters the old buggies. But they were fun to drive. I think my parents wanted me to have the first one because they preferred me to drive it rather than a motorcycle – which some of my friends were acquiring at the time. 7&6=thirteen () 18:45, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

I'm surprised to see your revert there - given your earlier copyedits, I thought you were one of the good guys in this sterile conflict. Anyway, what exactly is there to discuss? We have a version that's cited, conforms to the relevant policies, and is at least decent. Not perfect, there's always room for improvement, but a good starting point. And on the other side, we have a version that's chaotic, polemical, largely uncited, makes outlandish claims and blatantly violates WP:CS, WP:V, WP:RS, WP:FRINGE, WP:NPOV and a host of other policies. And that's defended by an editor with, shall we say, unconventional views, as can be seen from his talk page screeds. So I'm not quite sure what you're after. - Biruitorul Talk 16:47, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

I think we should try to resolve this by sections (or lines) and citations. Retail, not wholesale. 7&6=thirteen () 16:52, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

Further reading at Irataba

Thanks for this edit, but the further reading section was recently removed by request at the peer review. I'm not sure what's correct, but I've been told that FAs generally do not include further reading sections. What do you think? Rationalobserver (talk) 16:43, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

I rather thought that this stuff had some intrinsic worth. Not sure what the peer reviewers have in mind. I hate to put good and complete on line sources—that might benefit readers— into the Ash heap of history. Do what you want. Best regards. 7&6=thirteen () 16:52, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
It's not about "what I want"; I like further reading sections, but I'm pretty sure that when the peer reviewer who suggested we remove it comes to FAC they will again suggest we remove it. Rationalobserver (talk) 16:55, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

...for trying to help out with Skaters in the Bois de Boulogne‎ but I don't link to publishers or use citation templates in this article. If I revert these changes per WP:CITEVAR, is there anything you would like me to be aware of or modify in some way? I would really like to use cite templates, but I stopped using them several years ago when the developers wouldn't stop messing with them, often removing fields and leaving broken parameters without telling anyone. That's what I'm trying to figure out. So, do you prefer to link to publishers? I generally don't; do you think I should? Viriditas (talk)
I do. I think linking to the rest of the encyclopedia is good. But there isn't a rule that I know of. And I don't argue about WP:CITEVAR cuz it gets me nowhere unless there is a clear consensus, and there rarely is. Editors get invested in the way they set up the citations, and WP:Own doesn't matter in the real world. So I defer to you. 7&6=thirteen () 23:56, 12 April 2015 (UTC)

doesn't mean that the category was unneeded. If the category goes down, let it be on its own merits, not because you systematically emptied it. 7&6=thirteen () 11:53, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
Hi again Hello 7&6=thirteen. Please use my discussion page to answer me. I went one by one through those articles to categorize them in the best way. Only took them out of Yacht racing into other categories more related with sailing itself, as yachting can be done by sail or motor. After all the work, I found no article referring to motoryacht racing, therefore left the category empty. Now, they, or their tank category (like America's Cup) are categorized under a sailing category (mainly sailing competitions or subcategories). I'd love to discuss with you any case in which you don't agree with the new or left categories. It's not a matter of deleting for no reason, it's a matter of making articles easier to find. Best regards--Banderas (talk) 14:20, 26 April 2015 (UTC)
Having an extra category does not make the article less easy to find. To the contrary, a specific category (many of these actually use the word "Yacht" in the title) is helpful, not harmful. If you feel strongly about this, do a for real proposed deletion. Doing it surreptitiously (in the back door without notice and without input from relevant participants) does no one a favor. 7&6=thirteen () 14:27, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

No back door at all. I read every article to categorize on the right category. I was trying to avoid several same meaning categories per article. Just at the end of simplifying every case, it showed up there were no articles left in the yacht racing category. They all fitted under other sailing (sport) categories.--Banderas (talk) 15:35, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

I must have missed the announcement? If I did, then I apologize. If I didn't ... You may feel confident about your assessment. Of course, you and I disagree. We will see what others have to say. Deleting all the pages first and then deleting the category is Bass ackwards. Rather like dealing with the Red Queen. First then execution, then the trial. 7&6=thirteen () 15:58, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Demographics of the Supreme Court

I'm sorry... I'm not sure what your revert comment means. An anonymous editor took the long-standing version in which the justices were identified as "Roman Catholic", and removed the "Roman", leaving only "Catholic". I reverted, indicating that "Catholic" by itself is ambiguous, since there are other churches that call themselves catholic. You reverted the revert, but the comment makes no sense to me: "hat there are other rites does notk change the factd that these justices are practicing Roman Cathollics." Indeed; I did not delete the affiliation, I clarified it back to "Roman Catholic", you dropped the "Roman" again. Could you tell me what I'm missing? Thanks. Magidin (talk) 14:57, 19 May 2015 (UTC)

In each and every Wikipedia page one would click 'View history', then 'Page view statistics' and he will get the statistics page. Now, the headline reads - '(Wikipedia page) has been viewed xxxxxx times in the last 30 days. (and, for 10,000 Wikipedia pages, also - ) This article ranked xxx in traffic on en.wikipedia.org.'. One may get the wrong impression that the ranking is an all time one. As I understand it, the ranking is merely the page's rating for the month of March 2014 (see the figures here). This can be a bit misleading.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help -- Limitless undying love (talk) 01:07, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

Passenger pigeon for FAC

Hi, some time ago we talked a bit about bringing passenger pigeon to FAC. I'll soon read the new Errol Fuller book about the species, and then I'll start working on the article, feel free to join if you're interested. Meanwhile, I discovered the book can be downloaded freely as a PDF[20] from Archive.org, doesn't seem entirely legal, but now you know, before it is taken down... FunkMonk (talk) 13:58, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

FunkMonk Thanks. Let me know if you need help! 14:38, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
Cool, will probably take a little while before I begin working on it, but feel free to do anything in the meantime. Could be nice to have it ready for September 1 next year, the date of its extinction (we missed the centennial, though)... This September is too early, of course. FunkMonk (talk) 20:11, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know that you are correcting errors to try and get my article approved. Over the years, I have contributed over 500 photos of both National Historic Place and Michigan Historic places to Wikipedia. I always wanted to try my hand at creating an article and thought this brand new living history museum was one. To get shot down within an hour with no real explanation why was a bit crushing. However, I did learn a lot about how a page is put together. If it doesn't go thru, I will still look for something that is worthy of Wikipedia and give it another go.

Wingerham52 (talk) 20:26, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

Wingerham52, I am highly optimistic. You laid down a great base, and I put on some roots and branches. It is now a well sourced and WP:notable article. 7&6=thirteen () 20:33, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

I received this e-mail from you:

Wingerham52 added many pictures (that apparently he took) to Commons. That's good = now he has to add a category for each picture. I made Category:Michigan Heritage Park that he can put them into. I started with his picture of Fur Trader Cabin.jpg and then he should copy what I did with all the other recent Commons pictures he uploaded, that are now uncategorized. Can you help him this = since he has to learn this step. Thanks!

Another editor asked me to sent this to you.

I am not sure what this is referring to and/or how to go about it. I don't have your revised submission, just my original(which was rejected. Most of my photography is for the wikipedia articles denoting the historic sites in Michigan. Is he also referring to these submissions, or just to the ones I took at the Muskegon Heritage Park? If he is also saying that the most recent additions have to be categorized, this would be a first after years of photographing historic places.

Wingerham52 (talk) 16:11, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

I've not uploaded pictures, so I don't know the drill. I think that if you add the Commons category, then it could be searchable that way. Not a requirement (that I know of) but useful to our readers. 7&6=thirteen () 16:14, 25 August 2015 (UTC)
Michigan Heritage Museum contains the many revisions, and a review is pending. I would do it myself, but I don't want someone to confabulate a WP:COI. 7&6=thirteen () 16:17, 25 August 2015 (UTC)

I have checked out the copyvio page and I have done some re-editing of sections. A large percentage of the red violations are proper nouns and names. If you would neglect those there would be little or no plagiarism. I also didn't realize that the article was still alive. I was going to abandon it after it was rejected. I thought it was notable because this is a living museum. Kinda like Williamsburg.

Wingerham52 (talk) 14:23, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

IMHO, given the amount of coverage (which I've put in as sources in the article) by WP:RSs getting it revived is a 'slam dunk.' We just have to be patient. And I am confident we will get a WP:DYK when it is revived. 7&6=thirteen () 14:47, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

What do you think

Thanks for all the help to a newbie. I was going to give up on the article. Now for my next idea, I would like to bounce it off you, since you are into lighthouses. The wiki page at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lighthouses_in_Michigan is not user friendly because it is hard to discern where they are geographically. I was thinking of redoing this list to mirror the page like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Michigan. This would allow one to search for the lighthouses in specific counties. I don't want it to be a waste of time.

Wingerham52 (talk) 15:57, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

Before you do that, take a look at the Michigan Lighthouse template that appears at the bottom of every Michigan lighthouse article. 7&6=thirteen () 19:55, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

Michigan Heritage Park has been nominated for Did You Know

I didn't want to interrupt your review, as there was an edit conflict, so I'll post this here instead. It is not exactly clear what "underexploited resource" means in this context, but if it is intended to encourage the hunting of the species, it's a bad idea and presents a neutrality issue. The idea that resources should be exploited until they are extinguished, let alone animals for that matter, is not just controversial, it's a notion that's been responsible for all the horrors associated with imperialism, colonialism, and environmental destruction. The economics and science of sustainability no longer deals with the older notion of "exploiting" animals as a resource until they go extinct, and Wikipedia should not be used to push this archaic, outdated view. I'll ping User:SlimVirgin to see if she has anything to add on this. Viriditas (talk) 02:56, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

While it is "widely distributed" there are apparently no reliable surveys of its distribution and population. Vulnerability to environmental issues is mentioned at the Red List, but unmentioned in the article. I would note also that the study that supports this is dated 2005 and seems out of date. Viriditas (talk) I suggest you post your comment at the nomination talk page. 7&6=thirteen () 11:27, 2 September 2015 (UTC)
Viriditas, that is exactly why I left "underexploited" out. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 12:07, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

I have admired Meh for a long time. I think that those kind of articles are what separate us (in a positive sense) from other encyclopedias. For example, I am proud of Barber pole and The moon is made of green cheese, which I contributed to a lot. The latter gets a surprising amount of views all the time. I think these are surprisingly utilitarian for our readers. 7&6=thirteen () 13:30, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

It is not easily cured with a request for citations. There has been a request for citations on the list since 2011. Deli nk (talk) 15:23, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
Well, you and I could work on putting citations together.
You went beyond drive-by flagging, and implemented drive by destruction. Not helpful in building an encyclopedia. That list was not arbitrarily put together, and all of these people are notable (and we just need a citation to put them in West Michigan). I WP:AGF by the editors. It is far better to build on the foundation that is there than it is to wipe it all out. That's my opinion. 7&6=thirteen () 15:39, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

DYK's been a little infested by rules bloat lately. Since—once they find it—it's where the new page creators take their new babies, please do hang around and help them walk it back a little so we can be more welcoming and reasonable about what new articles are usually going to look like. — LlywelynII 03:23, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
