Sydney Museum of Contemporary Art - Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon
All around the world, groups are getting together to redress the gender imbalance on Wikipedia. Come along to the MCA, see works by women artists on display in the galleries, peruse a collection of resources, and get editing!
Wikipedia’s gender trouble is well documented. In a 2010 survey it was revealed that less than 13% of its contributors identify as female. The practical effect of this disparity is clear — with more articles on notable women missing when compared to Encyclopaedia Britannica — Wikipedia is clearly skewed. This represents a huge inequality in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.
How to prepare:
- create a Wikipedia account before the event, and add your name to the participants list at the bottom.
- Write something on your "user page" to describe your interests and that you will be editing as part of this event. Link to this event page.
- Familiarise yourself with Wikipedia's three Core content policies - Neutral point of view, Verifiability, and no original research.
The Biographies of living persons policy is also very important for this event's theme. - Attendees should bring their own laptops and power cords.
On the day:
No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary we will be able to tutor you through or help you on the day. There are training modules available if you would like to prepare yourself in advance
