Art+Feminism is an international campaign to improve content on women and the arts on Wikipedia and encourage female editorship and participation in the online encyclopedia. San Francisco Art Institute is hosting a special satellite edit-a-thon in the Walter and McBean Galleries, currently home to A Living Thing, an installation by the artist Mel Ziegler. Throughout its run, A Living Thing offers a sanctuary for conversations, performances, debate, and acts of solidarity and resistance—through an open mic during all gallery hours, and an open call to anyone in the local community who wishes to contribute to the life represented by the flag.

By taking this installation as its stage and platform, this event celebrates the “open mic” dimension of Wikipedia, and is a chance to put the diverse and specialized resources of the adjacent Anne Bremer Memorial Library to use as reference material for building up Wikipedia content on topics related to art and feminism.

On Saturday, March 25th, 2017, we will come together to share and grow knowledge about art, feminism, diversity, and Wikipedia; working together to improve articles and contribute to discussions relating to these topics.

People with no Wikipedia editing experience are welcome; there will be experienced editors who can help you get started and answer all of your questions. Experienced Wikipedians are also welcome to come learn more about contemporary art, contribute to Wikipedia, and help others to become involved.

The SFAI / Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is organized by SFAI Exhibitions and Public Programs, led by Katie Hood Morgan, Assistant Curator and Exhibitions Manager, and Niki Korth (nikikana), Manager of Graduate Administration. Presented in collaboration with CODE (Committee on Diversity and Equity), SFAI Student Affairs, and SFAI Library and Archives, and with support from Bay Area Wikimedians.

Schedule (tentative)

We will begin with two short introductory presentations, of special interest to new editors, but you can stop by anytime during these hours and leave whenever you like. Experienced editors will be available throughout to help answer any questions for newcomers. Reference materials from the SFAI Library and refreshments will be available all day.

  • 1:00 PM-ish: Introductory presentations
    • Long-time Wikipedian Britta Gustafson (Dreamyshade) explains how and why to edit.
    • Wikipedia is big, and getting bigger with the help of editors like you. Mahmoud Hashemi will briefly introduce a few ready-made tools that enable experienced editors to organize their efforts and maximize their impact.
  • 1:45-4:30 PM: Work time!
    • 3:00-3:30 PM: Lightning talks in the upstairs gallery - open mic for short talks, conversations about Wiki life. (Or feel free to keep working downstairs).
  • 4:30 PM: Round-robin discussion on what we worked on, what we learned and what inspired us
  • 5:00 PM: End. Thank you for joining!

Who should attend

People of all gender identities and expressions. Please ask your fellow attendees for their pronouns of choice, and be aware of our Safe Space Policy. Children are welcome and SFAI and the organizers will support children, parents, and caregivers to the best of our ability. We ask all participants to be supportive of kids, parents, and caregivers wherever they are, as we do not discourage them from attending the event.

The Walter and McBean Galleries are accessible to wheelchair users. An accessible ramp is located at the main entrance on Chestnut Street between Jones and Leavenworth. Reserved disabled parking is available in our Francisco Street lot by prior arrangement. Please email kmorgan@sfai.edu to reserve or with any questions related to ADA accessibility.

Please bring your laptop, power cord, and ideas for articles that need updating or creation. For the editing-averse, we urge you to stop by to show your support and learn about Wikipedia. If you do not already have a Wikipedia user account, please create one before you arrive (you can do so here). Please also take a moment to familiarize yourself with the Safe Space Policy

Public Transportation

The 30 Stockton bus intersects with BART and many major bus and subway lines throughout the city. There is a bus stop at the intersection of Columbus Avenue and Chestnut Street. The main entrance is 1.5 blocks up Chestnut Street. Visitors can also take the Embarcadero Trolley to the corner of Beach and Jones Streets. For more information please visit www.sfmta.com.

Parking

SFAI is located in a residential neighborhood, and two-hour parking is available on all of the streets immediately surrounding the school. Parking is limited and public transportation is highly recommended. To plan a trip using public transportation, please visit www.511.org.
