Juno M Gemes was born in Budapest, Hungary into a distinguished family. Raised in the house of her aunt Dame Hetteny Aranka and Newspaper Editor / Owner Emile Nadenyi. With her parents Lucy and Alex Gemes she escaped from Budapest after the war . Her father was invited to Australia. Gemes arrived as a five year old not speaking a word of English. Gemes is a Feminist artist / who pioneered Collective Multi Media Arts in Australia / Co Director of The Human Body / Co Director 10 Cunningham Street/ Member of The Yellow House /Multi Media work at UFO, Stratford East Theatre London / Co Publisher Paper Bark Press / Photography/ Political advocacy/ International Exhibitions . Juno Gemes has had over 24 Solo exhibitions in Australia , UK, USA and Europe . She has contributed to over 40 major group exhibitions Her solo exhibition Proof Portraits from The Movement 1978-2003 exhibited at The National Portrait Gallery Canberra 2003 then toured eight venues during the next five years completing it's tour at The Museum of Sydney in 2008. Educated at SCEGGS Moss Vale, a drop out from USYD , she completed NIDA Director's Course in 1964 then went to University of Perugia where she again dropped out to work at The Festival of Two Worlds in Perugia as a student assistant to Director of the Festival de Dua Mondi Maestro Gian Carlo Menotti, also to Directors Ed Parone USA , John Cox UK. At The Festival of Two Worlds she met Gerry Grotowski and his Theatre Laboratorium. She was invited to Cracow Poland to study further. Working at the Festival again in 1966 Director John Cox invited Gemes to London to work on The Great Dance Gala at The Royal Albert Hall. In London Jim Haynes introduced her to UFO Underground Club where she worked on Multi media Happenings and Events with David Curtis , Mark Boyle and Charles Marovitz. Gemes directed " The Nature of Romance" performance piece with Lawrence Beck at Joan Littlewood's Stratford East Theatre. Gemes was then invited by Filmmaker Tim Ruddnick to take part in Yoko Ono's Bottoms film. Yoko invited her to work on the film - she joined Yoko , Kyoto , John Cox , Tim and Robbin Rudnick at Hanover Gate Mansions and worked on the film for six months. Returning to Australia Gemes was encouraged by Australian artist colleagues to continue with Multi - Media Performance Art in Sydney. Also known as The Powerhouse this venue was in Cunningham Street off Goulbourne Street in Central Sydney. With Martyn Sanderson- Gemes established 10 Cunningham Street a three story Warehouse which became Sydney's first muti media environmental performance space. At the same time Gemes joined with Clem Gorman and John Allen to create The Human Body Performance Group. Artists participants included Laurel Fox, Gillian Jones, Julia Salies,Clemency Brown, Clem Gorman, John Allen, Michael Glasheen. Jack Myer, Tom Thomson, Jack Jacobson, Brian Thompson, Andrish St Clare, Stephan Jones, James Ricketson,Ken Beatty , David Humphries, Stevie Jones. Light show creators included Albie Thom , Aggy Reed, UBU Films and Ellis D. Fogg. House Bands included Tully and The Id. Michael Glasheen , Tom Barber and Jack Jacobson created a Geodesic Light Environment on the top floor . Brian Thompson painted text onto the Wall on first floor - his first environmental set design. The Human Body's most renown Performance Works included Ceremonies devised by Clem Gorman and The Human Body Eats a Peach by Juno Gemes with the entire ensemble- Plastic inflatable structures by Ken Beattie, Film by Michael Glasheen . The Human Body Eats a Peach was also performed at PACT Sydney.
