Deletion vs archiving

Hi Vanjagenije, I am curious as to why this section was removed rather than archived. The other mentioned section did not include this user in the submission, and so the only diff comparison evidence is now not in the archives. Thanks for your work, CMD (talk) 07:56, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Curious about Process

Hello, hopefully I have this right, that you are leading an SPI where I have been named? Policies are never so clear as they might seem, but by my reading it is so clearly a false and inappropriate allegation, I am wondering how long it takes to have it removed - the same person who keeps repeatedly referencing my identity has also made the accusation, so there is an added level of reputational harm (beyond just accusing an anonymous identity). I see there is a long list of work that you are doing so I recognize that these things take time - I am concerned that once this is resolved the same person will simply use another avenue to attack me, including my fully public reputation. Is there a point at which they will no longer be able to do that? If I suspect that it is just going to keep going forever, other than just giving up, what are my options? ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:16, 23 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Adding unsourced claims

Стројислав1081 (talk) 23:34, 24 November 2021 (UTC)Стројислав1081: Hello. I don't understand why you reverted my edits on Srbinda page. I removed unsourced claims, personal analysis and fixed typing errors.[reply]

Because you gave undue WP:WEIGHT to certain fringe theories, presenting them as they are relevant scientific theories. Vanjagenije (talk) 23:38, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Based on what source anything on that article is fringe theory? Every claim I added is sourced, while claims for pseudo-history aren't, and are personal analysis. Стројислав1081 (talk) 23:42, 24 November 2021 (UTC)Стројислав1081[reply]

Hi, you wrote "Please, do not alter the reviewed block request" as I attempted to fulfill the request to the second point you made "*the block is no longer necessary because you 1. understand what you have been blocked for, 2. will not continue to cause damage or disruption, and 3. will make useful contributions instead."

I was assuming I could reply to you to appeal, but since you did not reply to it, it must work differently, do you know how I should re-appeal? RBut (talk) 19:49, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:07, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Application for mentorship

I am looking for a mentor. I wanna go through a course under your tutelage for a period of time that you determine for a counter vandalism course and/or a course on proper page creation. After which I will be given rollback and new page reviewer privileges. I'm reaching out to you because I wanna do this the proper way. It will be a honor to learn. Cheers Amaekuma (talk) 07:36, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Amaekuma: Hi! There is no such thing as mentorship here (as far as I know). I am a volunteer here, just like you. You are free to edit and experiment as long as you show wp:good faith and listen to other editors' advices. The best way to learn is to try. But, be sure to listen to other editors and to be willing to learn from them. There are several pages that explain page creation and other key Wikipedia policies (you have a list of useful links at your talk page). I see that you have a lot of different warning messages at your talk page. You should read them and try to understand them. Usually, a warning contains a link to a relevant Wikipedia policy that you are expected to read and understand. You can ask me any specific question you have regarding Wikipedia procedures. Possible Jagged 85 sock

Hello Vanjagenije, I'm contacting you about this since you seem to have been familiar with the Jagged 85 case in the past. I'm growing concerned that Maestro2016 is a sock of Jagged 85 and wanted to discuss it someone who's familiar with the case before I bring it to SPI. Would you have any comments? JOEBRO64 18:40, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@TheJoebro64: I am not particularly familiar with that user. Did you read Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Jagged_85/Archive#18_May_2020? Vanjagenije (talk) 19:27, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I did review it; from what I gathered, it seems to have been treated as a content dispute rather than a sockpuppetry case and thus wasn't properly reviewed. I became suspicious of Maestro2016 after I discovered this edit where they added a claim with a source related to the topic that did not actually corroborate the claim (something Jagged had a history of doing), and upon further digging I found enough similarities - specifically both users having keen interest in video games, films, islamic history, and math, with a focus on sales figures - to spark concern. I was directed to you by Ferret since I'm looking for editors that have dealt with the case in the past before I go ahead at SPI - I just want to have a high degree of confidence before taking proper action. JOEBRO64 19:44, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What to do with regular "Serbo-Croatian doesn't exist / is Swedish-Danish-Norwegian" edits

I'm not sure how to approach these users, it's not strictly "vandalism" but they don't seek consensus (before making these edits) because they can't get one, and I feel like starting one myself is going to be a waste of time (they won't change their mind). Here's the latest line of articles, check their history log:

I would be grateful for some guidance for this and future cases. -Vipz (talk) 08:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Da Doo Ron Ron single.jpeg

Thanks for uploading File:Da Doo Ron Ron single.jpeg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Sock user and vandalism

Hello, Vanjagenije. — Also notifying @Zzuuzz and Tamzin:

I am not sure who to contact over this, but since you recently identified another sock, User:WeWorkGuest, another one of User:Awolf58's phony names, (Users Zzuuzz and Tamzin: are familiar with this ever-changing sock.) I'm appealing to you, or anyone, for help. As I believe you know, user WeWorkGuest made edits on the Benjamin Tompson page. This is one of several instances where 'Awolf' has created a user name and came straight to an article I have created. Recently my user page has been vandalized also. Someone added the name "Mohammed Hakena Sugnie" over three of my users boxes, but for some reason, the edit involved does not show up in edit history. When I click on a past version of my user page this name still shows up. Somehow, someone has made this edit which does not show up in edit history. I tried reverting back and restoring the page but this name still shows up above the three userboxes. Can someone fix this, and while they're at it, place protection on my user page? I have lost count of the times where I have been singled out and have had my work, and now my user page, vandalized by this individual. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 02:26, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Here was the problem: Special:PageHistory/Template:User_Good_Article. That happens sometimes. -- zzuuzz (talk) 02:32, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Darn, beat me to it. :D Yeah, almost certainly coincidental, Gwillhickers. I'm sorry to see that Awolf continues to harass you despite his continued protestations to me and Randy Kryn that he's on the straight and narrow now. If you are worried about your userpage getting vandalized by autoconfirmed users, you can move it to something like User:Gwillhickers/userpage.css (note: will look broken there, but will transclude fine), change your userpage to {{/userpage.css}}, and then request full protection for your userpage. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 02:38, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Zzuuzz: — Wow, that was fast. So in other words, someone vandalized the good article template, which, I'm assuming, would effect all such templates. In any case, thank you, once again, for your help. All the best, -- Gwillhickers (talk) 02:45, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Seen it all before :/ Most templates have semi-protection, which helps, but this user has (had) been around a few months. Yes, many good article contributors will have looked a bit silly for a while. Any time. -- zzuuzz (talk) 02:53, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Tamzin:, I'm not sure why I simply can't request full protection. When it comes to css stuff I'm not up to speed. Is this the only way to get user page protection? -- Gwillhickers (talk) 02:45, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Gwillhickers: I'm happy to protect the page for you, but you wouldn't be able to edit it yourself then (unless you feel inclined to RfA). The .css hack I mentioned is the only way to make a userpage editable just by its owner. (Well, edit filters can do it, but I think that would be seen as not worth the overhead.) -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 02:48, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Tamzin: — Okay, I guess I'll leave it as it is, as apparently there was no direct vandalism to my user page, just the templates it used. Sorry to have to keep buggin' you guys. Once again, many thanks for your help. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 03:08, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Tag teaming users preventing update of a page

Hi Vanjagenije, I want to report that some users are coordinating their efforts to prevent changes to the Vasojevići page. These users include at least Ahmet Q. (talk · contribs), Ktrimi991 (talk · contribs) and, possibly, Maleschreiber (talk · contribs). It should be noted that Ahmet Q. had never contibuted to the page before, while Ktrimi991 was only patrolling there from time to time, without any substantial contribution to the article. Regarding my own edits, they were done first under an IP, then I created this account to continue working on the page. While most of my edits consist in fixing references, correcting some sentences and so on, it seems that the aforementioned users don't like the fact that I added valid sources to balance the paragraph on the origin of the tribe. These changes were accepted by user Jingiby (talk · contribs) who also patrols there, after he altered them slightly. However, user Ktrimi991 even accused my changes of being messing even if they were done in successive edits that are obviously clear, each with an explanation. With the exception of Maleschreiber who has vaguely tried to discuss, none of these users seem to want to talk about the changes. All their effort are obviously intended to protect a point of view, while acting blatlantly against Wikipedia philosophy and policy. Krisitor (talk) 15:19, 23 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Krisitor: You are encouraged to discuss the edits with other editors and seek consensus. If there is a content dispute, see WP:Dispute resolution. Vanjagenije (talk) 23:45, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Omot singla "Za milion godina"

Pozdrav, Vanja.

An issue of content organization: copying of 31 lists from the Serbian Wikipedia

Hello Vanjagenije. First a disclaimer of sorts: I should have taked to you earlier, before starting an AfD that is now ongoing. This is not meant to solicit your participation in the AfD, which could be seen as WP:INAPPNOTE. I am aware of the possible appearance of canvassing. The reason why I am contacting you now is that I became aware, only after starting the AfD, that it was you who created Immovable Cultural Heritage of Exceptional Importance (Serbia) and Immovable Cultural Heritage of Great Importance (Serbia).

You may be interested to learn that another editor is recreating this same list content, but divided into 31 lists (for the 24+5 districts of Serbia with KiM + Belgrade and Novi Sad), which is a list structure copied from the Serbian Wikipedia. In my view this is totally duplicative, and if the idea is to have these tables divided territorially per district, this needs to be done by proposing a split (of your two abovementioned lists), not by creating a duplicative list structure. 8 articles have been created, and there are 23 to go.

I considered WP:BLAR but I could not decide on what an appropriate target would be. Therefore I requested WP:A10, but it was understandably difficult for administrators to act on these A10s, because it's hard to compare lists when their titles don't clearly indicate the same scope, as entries themselves have to be compared to see if the content is duplicative, which is a lot of work... so the speedy deletion templates stood there for like 16 hours, and then I switched to an AfD in the hope that, when the problem is explained, the situation will become easy to understand and resolve. But, after some further reflection, I don't think that even the AfD will help many people comprehend the issues of content organization in this area. But I know that you will understand, because you're obviously familiar with said area, having created those two great lists.

I want to prevent this content from being duplicated in two parallel sets of lists. I care much less if the content is split into many 'per district' lists or kept in two 'per tier of protection' lists (but I think that your two lists suffice). I really can't stand duplication, I think it's terrible for organization and maintenance. I want this content to have the best possible treatment.

Deleting the new 8 'per district' lists would prevent duplication. However, splitting your two lists into 'per district' lists would also prevent duplication. Do you share the same concerns that I have about duplication of lists of Serbian Immovable Cultural Heritage objects, and do you see any way out of this mess? —Alalch E. 17:53, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Editor's usage of sources

Hello there. I have a case regarding an editor. I've attempted to bring the conduct of this editor to the attention of administrators at ANI before, but it wasn't about this case, since this situation regarding the usage of sources with the editor occured almost after the ANI report. This case has to do with repeated usage of unreliable sources on an article. I'd like to point out that I have attempted several times to engage with the editor, but to no avail. I was wondering if you'd be willing to help out regarding this case. If so, I could provide you with more information. StephenMacky1 (talk) 14:53, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see how it's relevant what I supported when it was clearly requested in the investigation and ignored. 1234qwer1234qwer4 10:14, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@1234qwer1234qwer4: Sleeper CU checks are performed only when there is reasonable doubt that there might be sleepers (the doubt has to be supported by some kind of evidence [5] for more info. Moscow metro "duplicate"

Hello. Apparently, you did a rushed edit on Moscow Metro.

This "Tretyakovskaya" station was built in 1971, 2 platforms, line 6
This "Tretyakovskaya" station is line 8, with 2 separate platforms.

As you can see, these are 2 different stations from 2 different decades. Unline Underground, naming conventions in Metro use identical names for different adjacent stations for the sake of navigational comfort. Please avoid deleting relevant info without respecting a certain set of nuances next time. 81.89.66.133 (talk) 09:11, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

First, I didn't say those two images were duplicates. I wrote that some of the removed images were duplicates. Second, adding a ton of images to an article without corresponding contextual comment is certainly not "relevant info". Vanjagenije (talk) 11:35, 3 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Vanja, I'm thinking that the user needs to be reblocked indefinitely. They can't seem to behave. See the latest warning for edit-warring, as well as the warning by Ponyo in March for edit-warring and the ensuing discussion. What do you think?--Bbb23 (talk) 15:26, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Bbb23: I don't know. This latest warning is for a page Born Pink World Tour where the user made a total of two recent edits. Doesn't really look like edit war. Is there something more? Vanjagenije (talk) 19:42, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, the warning came before the user reverted too much, which is the way it should be, but I think the conversation with Ponyo is much more problematic, not only edit-warring, but laughing about it, and their edit summaries at the article, e.g., "u guys have something against me ?? Because the edit doesn't Inline with what disruptive on wikipedia lmaf", are in and themselves a violation of their unblock conditions. As Ponyo quoted the user, "What I would do differently in the future is...listen to the other editors who point out issues with my edits" The user is neither listening nor caring, and using acronyms that mean "laughing my ass off" in edit summaries is absolutely wrong. The user's comments and edit summaries remind me of a kid (don't know whether they are a kid) texting their friends about other kid and mocking them rather than an editor editing an encyclopedia.--Bbb23 (talk) 20:45, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bbb23 Hi, sorry about that. Me using the LMAF wasn't intended to be a mockery. I put such a text in because I didn't want to sound too mad or serious about the edits because it isn't that deep. I apologize once more for the words I used. I will sound more formal and professional in the future.

November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello Vanjagenije:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

There is a backlog of over 1000 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:25, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Map of UNESCO members

Hello, I saw you have previously edited the map of the UNESCO members found here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:UNESCO_member_states.png. When looking at the map, I noticed there is an island highlighted blue in the Atlantic off the coast of the US. But there is no island in that location. I am assuming this mark is intended to indicate Bermuda, which is a part of UNESCO as a part of the UK via a separate NOC. If this is the case, the mark should be further east, almost straight north from Puerto Rico.

If you agree, could you update the map? Or I could do it. Thanks!

@Flopsaurus: Where exactly have you seen that I edited that map? Vanjagenije (talk) 17:25, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia article

Hi! I have a problem and need your advice. If in an article the subject is the person in that article and they go to wikipedia to request that the article be deleted because they do not want their information to be posted here. In this matter, how should I explain? Can you help me find a solution? Thank you. Phong Dang (talk) 15:12, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@P. ĐĂNG: Wikipedia article may only be deleted under certain specific circumstances (see wp:deletion policy). "Not wanting" the article is not a valid reason for deletion. Wikipedia articles should only summarize what WP:reliable sources already said about the subject. Wikipedia articles should not contain any new information, they should only contain information that has already been published by reliable sources. So, the article can not be deleted just because the subject doesn't want it. But, there are certain limitations regarding private information (see WP:BLP for more info). Vanjagenije (talk) 17:22, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I will remember this to explain to new members. Thank you so much! Phong Dang (talk) 14:48, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The Jomontgeorge problem

Hey there, as you're aware from this, a new sock of this particular user keeps popping up every few weeks. Since they edit a wide range of Indian-film related articles, the last one NaanReady was able to avoid detection since June 2023. Is it possible to find a way to detect new socks sooner, especially through common articles? Krimuk2.0 (talk) 06:24, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Logo background

Hi Vanjagenije! I noticed that the word "Girls" in the logo GirlsDoPorn that you added here is not visible against the white background (as the image has a transparent background). Do you know how to fix this? I'm not sure if there can be a fix in the infobox parameters or if the file itself needs a duplicate with a black background. — Bilorv (talk) 20:42, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How should I handle a new potential sock after cu endorsed?

Hi, I found another possible: [7] at a case you endorsed for cu. I didn't want to add it to the list of accounts at the top of the case page, unless you say I should do so. ☆ Bri (talk) 19:42, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Uninvestigated Block

Hi! This is Arfaz. I am a student, I have an identity. You blocked me a few minutes ago, claiming that I have abused the use of multiple accounts in wikipedia in this article and this one as well. I will appeal for the block, but I wasn't given any change to talk, to have a say when I was blocked for 2 days (along with the other account that was blocked as well). 2604:3D08:2481:4F00:4C91:731:FCB9:1DE7 (talk) 00:32, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Notability

A tag has been placed on File:When You Gonna Learn single.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused duplicate or lower-quality copy of another file on Wikipedia having the same file format, and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Genocide Bar and Chetnik War Crimes

Hi, I undid your edit for Chetnik War Crimes as it seems you may have inadvertently removed a bunch of sourced content. I assume your aim was to remove the Genocide Bar however looking now, it seems only recently all listed genocides were removed from it and an edit war is taking place. I see on its talk page a call for an RFC is requested so perhaps it is best to wait for the final stable version? Until then, I think Bosnian Genocide, Genocide of Serbs in Independence State of Croatia, and Chetnik War Crimes During WWII and so on should still keep that side bar until editors make up their mind over the bar’s format. Otherwise it will just go back and forth for all these articles on a given day. Cheers. OyMosby (talk) 13:38, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@OyMosby: The bar was only added to the article recently [9] by the same user who was edit-warring about the content of the bar. So, if you want to keep status quo, then it should be removed, I think. Vanjagenije (talk) 14:02, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That user wasn’t edit warring there it seems. They added it to the other articles I mentioned on the same day as well. I don’t think timing makes a difference. As for edit waring recently it appears to be a number of different other users. It appears the long standing version of the bar listed all the various genocide articles. The latest version isn’t the stable once, hence why I suggested we wait for the RFC results when consus is reached there? Otherwise should the bar be removed from all articles no longer listed? OyMosby (talk) 14:32, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, we can wait for the bar to stabilize, I agree. Vanjagenije (talk) 20:07, 6 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
