Thanks for that, The Rambling Man. With reference to this discussion, do you think it reads better as is, or with the addition of the two extra articles? Upon reflection I'm thinking it might just be better as is. --Usernameunique (talk) 19:17, 22 May 2018 (UTC)

Rollback granted

Hi Usernameunique. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! TonyBallioni (talk) 01:47, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

TFA 3

Thank you for Pioneer helmet was made for battle. Utilitarian in design, it was discovered along with a pattern welded sword in the Anglo-Saxon grave of a man of about 25. Yet as plain as it is—compare it with the Coppergate helmet, which is almost identical in its underlying structure but much richer—it is both rare and significant. The helmet’s 1997 discovery marked only the fourth time an Anglo-Saxon helmet had been unearthed, and the boar atop its crest evokes the world of the epic Beowulf, a tale that lies in the ephemeral haze between fiction and reality." - Have my June pic, as a little token of thanks for the steady flow of quality articles. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:54, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

Guilden Morden boar etc.

Hello! Without your work there'd be nothing for me to translate, so I must thank you back. It's very nice to see featured content in Anglo-Saxon archaeology. Most of the good content in the Anglo-Saxon domain tends to be biographical in nature, so it's a welcome change of pace. – Swa cwæð Ælfgar (talk) 22:38, 2 June 2018 (UTC)

J Milburn, was actually just about to post a thanks/apology on your talk page; thank you for taking the time to review another of my nominations, and sorry I hadn't yet responded to your comments! (Your suggestions have been incorporated, however, with the exceptions of naming Denmark—does "Danish" not imply that?—and dropping the lead's third paragraph, though I'll probably trim and reword it.) Thank you for the short and complete view on the person, described: "Nigel Williams was a conservator at the British Museum before conservation was recognized as a profession, and as an early figure in an emerging field, he reconstructed a number of world famous artifacts. When only 23 he was tasked with restoring the Sutton Hoo helmet, regarded as “the most iconic object” from "one of the most spectacular archaeological discoveries ever made", and near the end of his life he took to pieces and reconstructed the Portland Vase, “probably the most famous glass object in the world”. He spent his entire career, and most of his life, working at the museum, and died while in Jordan to work on an excavation."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:49, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
Thanks Gerda Arendt, it was a fun and interesting one to write—and, like most of the articles I've brought to FA, one that you had a hand in at DYK. It's an article, like the related one on John Doubleday that is currently nominated, that I wasn't expecting to do much with, yet the two turned out to among my favorites to write. Back to helmets after this I think, though: next one is another of yours. --Usernameunique (talk) 09:11, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for today's Shorwell helmet, "built for fighting. It is strong, exhibits hardly any decoration, and is so plain that it was at first thought to be a broken pot and was purchased for only £3,800. Yet it is one of only six helmets known to exist from Anglo-Saxon England, a scarcity that—along with other rare objects found with the helmet, such as a pattern-welded sword and hanging bowl—suggests its owner was a high-status warrior. Found on the Isle of Wight in 2004, today it is in the collection of the British Museum."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:52, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Usernameunique; thought of you today when I visited the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds and saw the Pioneer Helmet. There was a good bit of information about it, so I think visitors will realise it was something worth noticing. It was great to see it up close after reading about it on Wikipedia. It was in a very dark case, though, so I don't think I wouldn't have been able to take a better picture than the one currently used in the Wikipedia article... John Doubleday (restorer)

Rather than talk on the FAC page, I thought it better to bring the discussion here. I'm afraid that, through no fault of yours, the FAC is something of a poster child for FACs languishing at the bottom of the list. We could discuss it all day, but I would not have been happy promoting right now, and I suspect neither would the other coordinators. And the fact that it has been there over two months means that we have to call a halt sometime. But an archived nomination is hardly an albatross, and I think that a restarted nomination is the best course of action, and will probably bring more review. If those who supported before do so again, that is fine, and we may get a little more commentary, which would be needed for promotion. I can even add a note to the top of the page when you renominate to explain why it was archived (and had this not been open for more than two months, the comments it received would not have meant that we needed to archive, it could have sat for longer.) Sarastro (talk) 22:51, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

Sarastro1, thanks for the responses. With three supports, I would have thought this article was not languishing at the bottom of the page, but waiting to be promoted at the bottom of the page. Ian Rose's comment from the 7th would seem to imply this also, focused as it was on a minor image issue. It seems odd that the most deference in the review seems to have been paid to someone who only read the lead, and who appears to have stopped responding. --Usernameunique (talk) 23:12, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for adding Nadine Gordimer to Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/October 3. Unfortunately, the "Honours and awards" section of the article is very poorly referenced, and so the article will not be eligible for inclusion. Also, I'm changing your blurb slightly. Seventh woman to win is not a great hook, so I made it first South African to win the Literature prize. If you can cite that section before 3 October, then I'll be happy to put her article back in. Thanks. howcheng {chat} 17:17, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

Thanks Howcheng, I’ll work on it when I have some time tonight. Lquilter, I see you added some of this. If you still have the sources at hand or would like to pitch in, any help would be appreciated! Cheers, —Usernameunique (talk) 18:26, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
Howcheng, I've gone through and thoroughly cited the section. Would you please mind putting the article back in? Additionally, though I realize it is not always possible to include a photograph, I would much appreciate it if this could be done in this case; as you can see by my initial edit to Selected Anniversaries in December 2017, this is an article that I have been interested in, and looking forward to a main-page display, for quite a while. Thanks, --Usernameunique (talk) 02:07, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
I'm terribly sorry I didn't see this earlier (basically, I just stopped at the Honours section), but the Bibliography could use citations as well, not for the titles that have articles, but the red links. Ideally, you have a single source that has her complete bibliography and you can use it for the entire section, but if that doesn't exist, you can combine things like WorldCat and other sources so that readers can verify that these titles aren't made up. I'm afraid it won't be able to be included for today, but her birthday isn't too far away and we can list her there instead. howcheng {chat} 06:53, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
Howcheng, I’ve added a citation at the bottom of the section which accounts for almost her entire bibliography. We still have more than 12 hours before it switches over to October 3; that would be preferable to her birthday if doable, which as I understand it does not run in the picture slot. Thanks, —Usernameunique (talk) 11:41, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
OK, looks good. Thanks for putting in the work! For some reason, I got it into my head that this was supposed to go on Oct 2 and I was thinking it was now too late, but for Oct 3 we are fine. howcheng {chat} 16:01, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for working with me on this, Howcheng, was nice to see it run yesterday. —Usernameunique (talk) 14:37, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

Four Award
Congratulations! You have been awarded the Four Award for your work from beginning to end on Gevninge helmet fragment. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 21:59, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for the article, TFA today, "a gilded piece of metal that would fit in the palm of your hand, is seemingly ripped from the charred pages of the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf. It was found in Gevninge, a coastal Danish village by Lejre, the contemporary royal capital and thought to be the site of the fabled mead hall Heorot. Beowulf’s trip to the hall takes him by such an outpost, where a “noble warrior”, brandishing a spear, rides down to meet him. If ever there were an artifact that one could imagine as singularly identifiable with a place and a person in Beowulf, the Gevninge helmet fragment is it."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:29, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

Wihtred

Hi -- I noticed you'd switched Wihtred to sfn style citations. Would you mind if I switched it back to the previous style, which is what I tend to use on everything I work on? I understand that a lot of people find sfn preferable, but I've never become comfortable with it. If you feel strongly about it it's fine as it is, but it would make it easier on me if I need to update the article in the future. Thanks -- Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 04:29, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

Hey Mike Christie, no problem—just switched it back. Sorry for the (unintentional) intrusion; I completely understand how having a familiar citation style makes editing more comfortable. It's a nice article, thanks for taking the time to work on and nominate it. --Usernameunique (talk) 05:01, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

Information icon Thank you for your edit to the disambiguation page Michael Cohen. However, please note that disambiguation pages are not articles; rather, they are meant to help readers find a specific article quickly and easily. From the disambiguation dos and don'ts, you should:

  • Only list articles that readers might reasonably be looking for
  • Use short sentence fragment descriptions, with no punctuation at the end
  • Use exactly one navigable link ("blue link") in each entry
    • Only add a "red link" if used in existing articles, and include a "blue link" to an appropriate article
  • Do not pipe links (unless style requires it) – keep the full title of the article visible
  • Do not insert external links or references

Just letting you know it will be TFA on 31 December 2018. Good work.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:25, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

Thanks Wehwalt, appreciate it. --Usernameunique (talk) 00:49, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
Not wanting to step on any toes, but I was just wondering if the anniversary of his death on 25 January might be marginally better? Perhaps it does not matter very much. 213.205.240.196 (talk) 09:09, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the idea. Either date is fine by me, and I'll leave this at the discretion of Wehwalt. If there is any one date attached to this article, it is probably 25 January as you say, or perhaps 10 September (completion of Portland Vase restoration). Generally speaking, however, having articles run on specific dates is not something that is particularly important to me. --Usernameunique (talk) 22:51, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
I don't think non-major anniversaries of death worth it. I'd be inclined to let it stand where it is. Of course, part of it is that I enjoyed the article! To let you know, the other TFA coordinators and I are working on a standard notification to suggest keeping an eye on WP:ERRORS on the day before and the day of, because blurbs and even the article have been edited without the principal author being in the loop.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:53, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
Sounds good to me, Wehwalt, thanks for the input (and for your words about the article)! --Usernameunique (talk) 02:33, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for "him", introduced: "Talented as he was, the British Museum's first restorer owes his renown to the actions of a drunkard. John Doubleday is best remembered as the man who restored the Portland Vase after it was smashed by a young man at the end of a week-long bender; along the way, he also testified in criminal trials, traveled internationally, and sold Shakespearean artifacts. Or at least so he said." --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:16, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

As a WikiCup judge, I have removed your submission of the DYK for the Björn Ambrosiani. Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Benty Grange helmet scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the Benty Grange helmet article has been scheduled as today's featured article for April 21, 2019. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 21, 2019, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

Southampton Cenotaph and the Jewish community

Hi Usernameunique, Haven't put this on the FAC page as I don't want to hold it up, but asked a mate of mine about the "exclusion" of the names of the Jewish dead. She's married to a rabbi and, oddly, she knows Tony Kushner and her husband has connections with the Jewish archive at Southampton University - his father's papers are deposited there. Thank you for the Emesa helmet, an overlooked gem: "Were it not displayed in Syria, let alone hidden in an undisclosed location, the Emesa helmet would be a much more famous archaeological treasure. This rich helmet is crafted so finely as to depict its owner’s face; it is so fine, in fact, that it is unlikely its owner would have risked damage to it for anything other than combat. Between the endpoints of its tumultuous modern history—dug from the earth by looters, only to be placed back underground to protect it from them—the helmet has gained some international attention, but remains an overlooked gem." - Happy to have the pictured DYK on the same page ;) - Jörg Streli, I couldn't make it to his funeral, so wrote an article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gerda Arendt (talkcontribs) 07:25, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the note, Gerda Arendt. It was nice to see Jörg Streli featured in the image slot as well. --Usernameunique (talk) 18:57, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
Thank you. He will be featured on the German Main page tomorrow, on his birthday (and the day after, - they add only two each day, but keep them for 48 hours). It was a bit of a fight, - one commenter questioned notability ... --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:37, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
April
... with thanks from QAI

Now a TFA-to-be: congrat to the colossus as FA, - another FAC I had planned to comment ... - When should that appear? - The Germans will have architecture by Streli's colleague tomorrow, pictured. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:13, 11 April 2019 (UTC)

And another TFA: "The Benty Grange helmet is unique. Its horn-and-iron construction is like no other Anglo-Saxon helmet; its use of myriad decorative techniques on a single ornamental object is unparalleled by any other Anglo-Saxon object, let alone helmet; and in a syncretic display emblematic of the slow spread of Christianity across pagan Britain, its boar-crest looks down at a cross on the nasel. It would have been a sight to behold in its day. The helmet may have been discovered 170 years ago, but is sparsely published; the most in-depth treatment was only prepared as part of an effort to study another helmet. This article thus pulls from multiple sources to create what is the most comprehensive take on the helmet available." - Thank you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:36, 26 April 2019 (UTC)

I'm not sure it can be taken to AfD while it's on the main page, so we'll have to wait until tomorrow, Gerda. ——SerialNumber54129 07:45, 26 April 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, Gerda Arendt. Actually had forgotten that this was going to appear today. Only remembered when I saw all the rollbacks on my watch page. Serial Number 54129, I'm sure I'll see you at AfD tomorrow! Mind you, I've been toying with the idea of a featured candidacy for Sutton Hoo Helmet (sculpture). Maybe not my brightest idea, but I'd love to see that one through. --Usernameunique (talk) 17:56, 26 April 2019 (UTC)
Going for third prize eh  ;) but yeah, seriously, go for it; why not. Thought about a featured topic with your helmets? ("ooh err missus")
It's definitely crossed my mind, though the hardest—Sutton Hoo helmet, Coppergate helmet, and probably Staffordshire helmet (about which the definitive publication is supposedly coming out this year)—have been saved for last. It's doable, I just need to do the work. --Usernameunique (talk) 04:39, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

WikiCup 2019 Reminder

Hi. I'm DannyS712 (talk), and I just wanted to remind you that you are a current participant in round 3 of this year's WikiCup! There are just over 2 weeks until the third round ends – if you haven't made you first submission for this round yet, there is still time to start; if you have already started, keep up the good work. See your submissions page: here. Good luck!

Any progress on this? The page title says it was a helmet fragment. The lead disagrees, saying it was attached to "a larger object, such as a helmet". They can't both be right. - Dank (push to talk) 18:55, 13 June 2019 (UTC)

Perhaps "part of..." rather than "attached to..."? I'll be scheduling this for early July soon, so I'd like it to be free of ambiguity, cheers Jimfbleak - talk to me? 10:42, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
UNU, we wouldn't want an article lead saying in one paragraph that McCartney was one of the Beatles and in another paragraph that he was a member of some group, such as the Beatles. I get that the sources may not be clear and may disagree with each other, but the article lead can't disagree with itself, and with the page title. - Dank (push to talk) 12:37, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Herbert Maryon

On 20 June 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Herbert Maryon, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that when Queen Elizabeth asked Herbert Maryon (pictured) what he did as she appointed him to the Order of the British Empire, he replied, "Well, Ma'am, I am a sort of back room boy at the British Museum"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Herbert Maryon. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Herbert Maryon), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

TFA

Thank you for Horncastle boar's head, "a tiny but interesting slice of Anglo-Saxon history. Its rich construction of silver, gold, and garnets, only hints at the likely richness of the helmet it once adorned; even the richest Anglo-Saxon helmets yet known, from Sutton Hoo and Staffordshire, have more rudimentary crest terminals than the Horncastle fragment. This 40 mm (1.6 in)-long fragment was purchased for £15,000, and is now on display in Lincolnshire"! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:44, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

  • If you stick this in article space, I'll dig around some more in JSTOR.

Jennifer Foster is an English scholar of prehistoric and medieval archaeology. She teaches at the University of Reading,[1] and has published three monographs, one on Iron Age and Roman boar figurines,[2] one on the Lexden tumulus,[3] and one an introduction to European archaeology before the Roman conquest, based on the collection in the British Ashmolean Museum.[4] In a 1995 article she argued that Iron Age metalsmiths in Britain might have been itinerant rather than having a fixed abode, and would produce groups of goods at single sites like Gussage All Saints, Dorset.[5]
