The reason I named Harry Eytinge as "Harry Eytinge (Actor 1822-1900)" was that there was a silent movie actor named Harry Eytinge who was born some time later in 1862 and I may write his bio if I can find enough information. Museum hacks and museum edits

Upcoming events:

• February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
• February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
• February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".

I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.

About your (non)participation in the January 2012 SOPA vote

Hi. I am Piotr Konieczny (User:Piotrus), you may know me as an active content creator (see my userpage), but I am also a professional researcher of Wikipedia. Recently I published a paper (downloadable here) on reasons editors participated in Wikipedia's biggest vote to date (January 2012 WP:SOPA). Wikimedia DC celebrates Black History Month, and more!

Hello again!

Not even a week ago I sent out a message talking about upcoming events in DC. Guess what? There are more events coming up in February.

First, as a reminder, there is a WikiSalon on February 11 (RSVP here or just show up) and Wiki Loves Small Museums at the Small Museum Association Conference on February 15 (more information here).

Now, I am very pleased to announce:

• Tuesday, February 17 from 10 AM to 3 PM there will be #WikiTurgy at the University of Maryland. Join fellow theatre enthusiasts for a “mass act of public dramaturgy!”
• Thursday, February 19 from 10 AM to 4 PM we are hosting the Howard University Black History Edit-a-Thon. We are working in partnership with the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of African-American and African diasporic history.
• Tuesday, February 24 from 6 PM to 8 PM we have the Black History Month “First Edit” at NPR. Help improve Wikipedia and help others make their first edit to Wikipedia!
• Finally, our monthly dinner meetup is on Saturday, February 28.

There is going to be a lot going on, and I hope you can come to some of the events!

Reflinks bug

Thank you for tirelessly filling out references at Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa with your User:Zhaofeng Li/Reflinks software. However, this edit and this edit left unintended references at the end of the article (assuming there is no mysterious reason to add references for a category). Later edits turned them into red cite errors. So I removed the references, and you and/or User:Zhaofeng Li should fix the bug in the software if it's likely to reoccur.

And by the way, the "To leave me a new message you may click here." at the top of the page doesn't work; it says "Internal error [96683b3d] 2015-02-08 18:56:07: Fatal exception of type Scribunto_LuaInterpreterNotFoundError". Art LaPella (talk) 19:09, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

Category 20th-century lawyers

I think this category is undefining, and will eventually be bloated beyond recognition. Most politicians are also lawyers. There must be a hundred thousand people with bios here qualifying for this one. Categories should only be added if they are "defining" (with a few exceptions), most of those politicians added by you recently have never been known/notable/famous for their legal practice, but rather as politicians. I had some of the same thoughts myself the other day, when I began the categorizing spree. I take your point, and am not sure but that I don't feel something of the same way myself. Having said that, I do think the category has about as much validity as, say, Category:20th-century musicians or Category:20th-century painters. And it can be winnowed down by nationality, I shouldn't wonder. Which I might do one of these days.

To be a musician, or a painter, is much more definite and/or defining (a requirement to add categories), than being a lawyer. Almost all lawyers I've written about (several hundred) were not known for their legal work. 20th century lawyer has as much validity as 20th-century milk drinker or 20th-century beach vacationer. "20th-century lawyer" is currently being added (by you, inter alia) at all people who are already in the following categories: disbarred lawyers, New York Court of Appeals judges, New York Supreme Court Justices, New York state court judges, County district attorneys in New York, etc., and lawyers (by profession) who were notable as New York State Senators, Members of the New York State Assembly, etc. In the end it will become a terrible unhelpful hold-all. 20th-century painters has already almost a thousand pages, plus subcategories by country. I expect 20th-century lawyer to go into 50,000 pages easily, if anybody can find the time to waste on it. Kraxler (talk) 18:17, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

I agree with Kraxler here. You should only be categorizing a person as a lawyer if they are notable as a lawyer - not people who were a non-notable as a lawyer before becoming a politician or people who are famous as a sportsperson (example) and later became a lawyer. Many articles mention many jobs (e.g. "lifeguard, paper carrier, grocery clerk, forest firefighter, and golf caddy"), but adding a category tag for any job that a person has ever done isn't appropriate - it just creates category clutter on articles, watchlist noise and makes categories less useful for navigation. See, I don't have a problem with it as a defining category. For a politician, say...he may not have been notable as a lawyer, but if it was a substantial part of his career then I'm in favor of adding lawyer-based categories to his article. (Take my state delegate, for instance - he's not likely to be remembered as a lawyer, but it is his job, it's what he does, and it defines him as much as being politics does. To me, at any rate.)

Where I do have a problem, and where I'm open to conviction, is the necessity of some of those lawyer-based categories in the first place. "20th-century lawyers" falls into that category, for me...what difference does it make that a lawyer worked during the 20th-century? I can maybe see the argument for people in artistic fields. I'm not sure it's a necessity for the law.

If any of this makes any sense? We should categorize based on what makes the person notable for inclusion in an encyclopedia. E.g. Harold Brainsby may have spent decades working as a lawyer, he may have been a devoted husband and father, he may have been a regular church-goer or keen gardener ... to him (and his family) those may have been the things that defined him, but we're writing an enclopedia and he's in the encyclopedia because of what he did as a sportsman. I'd like to quote from Wikipedia:Categorization of people#N: "For example, a film actor who holds a law degree should be categorized as a film actor, but not as a lawyer unless his or her legal career was notable in its own right and/or relevant to his acting career. Many people had assorted jobs before taking the one that made them notable; those other jobs should not be categorized. Now substitute politician for actor, and there we are, concerning politicians.

I'd like to mention also Wikipedia:Overcategorization#Mostly overlapping categories: "If two or more categories have a large overlap (e.g. because many athletes participate in multiple all-star games, and religious leadership does not radically change from year to year), it is generally better to merge the subjects to a single category, and create lists to detail the multiple instances." In the case of judges or district attorneys there would be a more than 50% overlap because, I suppose, more than half of all bios here on Wikipedia are people of the 20th century. Okay so looking for strange yob for people still living I found M. Thomas Inge, which I'm not sure how this happened-but born in 1879 and listed as dying in 2001, looks like some vandalism (usually I just correct the dates whenever I find this-like I found someone saying still living born in 1750!) but for this guy not sure what to say...I did take off the 1879 part. If you read the reference it says he collected papers that date from 1879 to 2001, not that he was alive for that period. And there's no reason to doubt that he is still alive – he appears to have been editing and publishing as recently as 2011. --Deskford (talk) 22:38, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

Would love to work with you on future articles. I've gone through your recent edit history, and I'm intrigued. These articles are stable, but the last two articles I began are Juneau Mountain Rescue and 2015 Halifax train crash. I'd love to hear your feedback on them. In my roughly 9 years on Wikipedia, I have created about 20 articles, so I'm not a "new page factory". The vast majority of my contributions are "house keeping" issues related to details, references, and categories in other articles. English writers

Hi, I don't have a particular issue with splitting men and women writers but my concern is that most readers will be looking in the main English writers category for the articles and pretty soon it's going to be empty and the real categories like English male and English female writers are going to be hidden among the massive number of sub categories. Is it possible that for all of the ones you've split where there is a large number of sub categories that you could add a hatnote at the top of the categories explaining that they're split by male and female and embolden and link the main ones at the top? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:43, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

University of Wisconsin alumni categories

Many thanks for the message. In Wisconsin there are several University of Wisconsin campuses including Madison. Many article about people who graduated from UW-Madison would refered to UW-Madison as just University of Wisconsin. The University of Wisconsin and Wisconsin State University systems were merged during the administration of Governor Patrick Lucey with UW-Madison as the flag ship of the UW system. You have several UW campuses including Madison and that that many alumni of the UW campuses including Madison. There is a need to identify which alumni went to what UW campus. Retired numbers

Hey, man. Thanks for the awesome retired numbers template. I'm trying right now to clean things up and make them uniform throughout the MLB. The problem is that the Toronto Blue Jays' Level of Excellence has incredibly long images that are illegible at 100px. I don't want to screw things up, and am unsure how to put the option in without screwing everything up. It's been some years since I created templates.

Gender categorization

Hi, My understanding of WP:CATGRS is that a categorisation by any of these WP:NONDEFINING characteristics should only be used if there are reliable sources using them. Somebody being male and a writer doesn't make him a "male writer." It is so only if a reliable source labels him as such. Sure - Marion Gressette, L. Mendel Rivers, Jr., McKinley Washington, Jr. recently, and earlier in the day a whole chain of Arkansas House Speakers, most recent being William W. Cate, through the whole series if you click through the "successor" field of the infobox (all the articles are linked to their predecessor and successors). I guess that explains it... yeah, I'm not too crazy about the tag. Lots of the articles that I've created in the past really don't have a chance of being de-orphaned unless someone invests the time to make articles of list of various state legislature sittings (or they die and get added to the deaths page) really, so I feel that tag just takes up space in most cases. Yeah I can see that. Honestly reading through the previous deletion discussions of it, I'm probably in the camp that feels it's a bit unnecessary. It doesn't really indicate anything that is important to the reader of the article about the quality of it. Hi. I'm very much a novice when it comes to navigating when and how to use Wikipedia's 'talk' pages and 'sandbox', so if you would cut me some slack in terms of formatting my explanations of the primary sources that we are providing to support our entries on the Pearl S Buck page that would be great.

1. Regarding deletions of well-referenced information placed on the Pearl S Buck page, why is that information being deleted? The weight and quality of the references that we provide to support that information that describes Pearl S Buck involvement/integral role in placing Canada Scoops/60's Scoops victims in USA include the following:

1. National Archives of Canada, in courts of law that is considered a primary source, but Wikipedia doesn't consider it good enough? and 2. documentary done by Aboriginal People's Television Network.

And, The information that you are letting stand that blames someone else - a deceased dance instructor - for the Pearl S Buck involvement in Canadian Scoops is not as well referenced as the information that we provide.

It seems like you are letting Pearl S Bucks public relations machine make the editorial decisions regarding this page.

FYI: After the unison "Alleluja", which is ending the commonly preformed first edition, the full edition continues with the verse "Inveni David" in Gregorian mode with organ accompaniment, followed by a second (a cappella) unison "Alleluja". See Os justi.

Recent changes to categories

I'm trying to understand some of your recent changes to categories:

• Bill Cosby - You removed Category:20th-century American writers. Cosby wrote at least six published books prior to 2000, as noted in his article.
• Jerry Seinfeld - You removed Category:20th-century American writers. Seinfeld wrote the scripts of numerous episodes of Seinfeld, as well as at least one book, Seinlanguage, released in 1993.
• Jack Sensenbrenner - In April you added Category:American male journalists, and just now you added Category:20th-century American writers. I reverted both of these edits. Jack Sensenbrenner worked in the advertising department of the Los Angeles Times in his early 20s after college, and once was a partner in a religious bookstore, but he was never notable as a journalist or writer (and no evidence of any such notability is present in his article).

Irish/British categorisation

Hi Ser Amantio di Nicolao, I noticed you have been doing a lot of recategorisations in the past few days, in the course of which at least 30 or so Irish composers (pre-Irish independence) got a British category from you (like "British opera composers" or "British classical composers"). I suppose you feel entitled to do so because, before independence, Ireland was part of the United Kingdom. In the meantime, some of this work of yours has already been reverted (not by me) by editors who don't like the idea of Irish people being called British (see articles on A.J. Potter and John Andrew Stevenson). And you know, they are right! Ireland was part of the UK (until 1923), but never part of Britain. I therefore ask you to stop this activity and instead respect the national identities of Irish, Scottish, Welsh and English composers, even if an Irish composer may once have had a UK passport or spent his/her career in England. That makes a lot more sense than a British category. I for one will change the 30 or so composers on my watchlist that you changed to "British" back to Irish in the next few days. Adding parent categories

Hi Ser Amantio di Nicolao. I noticed that you are adding parent categories to a very large number of of film articles (example). Articles should be categorized in the most specific categories within a category branch (see WP:CAT#Categorizing pages). Category:American documentary films is not a non-diffusing subcategory as defined in WP:DUPCAT. I recommend that you roll back these changes.- MrX 10:33, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Deprecated PersonData

You reinstated the PersonData in the article on Michele Esposito that I had previously removed. Kindly note that apparently these PersonData are now considered deprecated and should be systematically removed – which I have done in a number of articles recently. It's not clear to me why you're adding the parent categories to articles. For instance Category:2013 American animated films is a child of Category:American films. I have reverted two such edits. @Walter Görlitz: I'm the founder of the actors project and am one of the most prolific film contributors on here and I think Ser Amantio is doing a great job adding the categories. It is a good thing to have one category with all American films in for consistency's sake and to have a full A-Z. If anything I'd argue that Category:2013 American animated films is Wp:Overcategorization and would support it being deleted. Category:2010s American animated films might just about be acceptable, by year is pushing it IMO. What does Lugnuts and MarnetteD think?♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:43, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

@Walter Görlitz: per WP:FILMCAT, all films are put in the category for their countries. Category:2013 American animated films is not the child of Category:American films, it's the child of Category:2010s American animated films, which is a child of Category:American animated films by decade, which is a child of Category:American animated films, and that's a child of Category:American films by genre. And per Category:American films - "For convenience, all American films are included in this category. This includes all American films that can also be found in the subcategories." I agree with Dr. Blofeld that Category:2013 American animated films is OC. We don't even have Category:2013 American films. I'm astounded that this is the case. They should clearly be children of American Films. Keep going, but get a bot to do the work. Male composers

Hello Ser, why are you removing the category Male composers from subjects who are, actually, male composers?? eg [7] or [8]... Cavarrone 08:46, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Consider that most of the male film score composers are not just composers of film scores... eg if you check the articles, you'll see that Pino Massara or Oscar Prudente were only rarely active in that field, while their main field was being composers of songs. Giancarlo Chiaramello and Armando Fragna were mainly active as score composers of stage plays. Nino Rota composed orchestral, chamber and choral music and even operas. Franco Godi specialized in composing commercial jingles, as to be called "Mr. Jingle" ¹. --Cavarrone 15:24, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for your interest. I'm working on this--I may be wrong--there may be two castles with the same name; the Vichy one would be near Gannat in Allier, which is quite far. I will fix this problem once I have finished reading a few articles. Bots

If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

• The simple solution is to simply include the "rawcontinue" parameter with your request to continue receiving the raw continuation data (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&rawcontinue=1>). No other code changes should be necessary.
• Or you could update your code to use the simplified continuation documented at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/API:Query#Continuing_queries (example <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages&continue=>), which is much easier for clients to implement correctly.

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

You made this change. I don't think Cohan was a "singer-songwriter". He was a singer, composer and lyricist, but he was not like, say, Billie Joel, who writes songs and sings them. Category:American rock singer-songwriters

Hi, please stop adding pages to Category:American rock singer-songwriters, which is marked as to be deleted following Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2014 November 11. I have been slowly recategorising the member pages and had just got it down to about 100, but you seem to have added 440 more. Please can you reverse this?

Also, please review this discussion. It seems that not everyone shares the view that being a singer and a songwriter makes one a "singer-songwriter" and, thus, placement in that category without manual review might be controversial.
