Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/WikiTurgy UMD

The University of Maryland Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library at The Clarice, University of Maryland is hosting a #WikiTurgy edit-a-thon Coworking Space! Join us and fellow theatre enthusiasts for a mass act of public dramaturgy. This internet-wide event aims to make Wikipedia’s articles on American theatre more inclusive and is part of a nation-wide effort to improve equality across the theatrical landscape and to promote the profile of women and minorities in the performing arts. According to the group of artists and dramaturgs who began the push for the February 17th edit-a-thon, they "consider this Edit-a-Thon an opportunity to expand the table of contents of this public encyclopedia to include the myriad under-/unsung theatre artists whose bodies of work contribute to the diverse landscape of theatre. To learn more about this call for participation, see their blog post entitled "Public Dramaturgy, Wikipedia, and Combatting 'Columbusing'."

An edit-a-thon empowers anyone to jump in as an editor to Wikipedia articles. It's one way to support an artist whose work you know, admire and feel should have a more publicly visible space online. Topics will not be assigned – you get to choose what articles you’d like to edit or create!

Research assistance is available from MSPAL librarians, Steve Henry (Music) and Felicity Brown (Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies). Please plan on bringing your own laptop and charger. A limited number of laptops are available on loan from the library.

About the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library

The Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library (MSPAL) is the central location on the College Park campus for music, theatre, and dance materials. Opened in 2000 as part of the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, MSPAL's public areas include a spacious main reading room with individual study carrels and computer workstations, a separate reading room for special collections, a lounge-style study room, a seminar room, and a group study room. A multi-media exhibition gallery, with an adjacent lecture/concert room, links the Library to the Smith Center's exciting programming via the Grand Pavilion.

Reference librarians, curators, and expert permanent staff are available on weekdays during regular working hours. However, the library is open evening and weekend hours, and offers basic circulation and information services during those times.

The Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library is home to several special collections and archives of materials relating to the arts. Special Collections in Performing Arts (SCPA) of the University of Maryland Libraries contains performing arts collections that preserve performance, education, recordings, and scholarship.

Also located within the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library, the International Piano Archives at Maryland is a unique resource for the study, appreciation, and preservation of the classical piano repertoire and its performance. IPAM's collections comprise the world's most extensive concentration of piano recordings, books, scores, programs and related materials, including the archival papers of many great keyboard artists.

Via Metro:

The Green/Yellow line Metro includes a stop in College Park. The Green train stops in College Park all day. The Yellow line only stops in College Park during rush hour service, 6:30 AM-9:00 AM and 3:30 PM-6:00 PM. You can use the Metro Trip Planner to determine travel times.

The College Park Metro stop is about a mile-and-a-half from the University of Maryland campus. The University provides a shuttle to and from the Metro station that runs every ten minutes. The shuttle is number 104 and it picks up in the circle right at the top of the station escalator. See the University Department of Transportation Services page for more information.

Metro Bus:

The University of Maryland is serviced by the following Metrobuses:

C2 - between the Twinbrook and Greenbelt Metro stations
C8 - between the White Flint and College Park Metro stations
J4 - between the Bethesda and College Park Metro stations
F6 - between the Fort Totten and New Carrollton Metro stations

The buses all pick up and drop off at a station on Campus Drive, two blocks from Hornbake Library.

Parking:

Visitor parking is available in the Stadium Drive Parking Garage, between the Michelle Smith Performing Library and the UMD football stadium. Rates are $3.00 per hour, with a $15.00 per day maximum; you can also pay for parking using the Parkmobile app. See the University of Maryland, Department of Transportation Visitor Parking page for more information.

Parking is also available off campus at the College Park city public parking garage at the corner of at Yale Avenue and Knox Road at a rate of $.75/hour.
