FC Schalke 04 Season 18/19

Hello S.A. Julio,

could you please open the FC Schalke 04 Season 2018/2019 so I can start editing it (transfers, friendlies etc.).

This would be very nice from you :)

kind regards,

Nico

@Nico s04 94: I believe the article exists, correct? See 2018–19 FC Schalke 04 season. Let me know if anything is needed, good luck this season! S.A. Julio (talk) 13:55, 6 July 2018 (UTC)

Oh my bad sorry. I just looked at the 17/18 season an there is no link to the new season. Thank you I hope the guys can be so successful as last season :)

2018 FIFA World Cup squads - Player representation by club confederation

Hi, about a week ago an IP pointed out in talk page that our table there is wrong. From its numbers, there is a total of 737 players, but it should be 736 (32 x 23). Hopefully you can take care of it, because I have been quite busy for the last few days. Thanks :) Centaur271188 (talk) 09:47, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

@Centaur271188: One extra was added to the AFC, now fixed. Looking forward to the final? Should be interesting, maybe Croatia have one last trick up their sleeve. Thanks for all your work during the tournament, I think I'm now ready for the return of club football... S.A. Julio (talk) 10:20, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your swift reply, and also your commendation. Well, I think many editors here have contributed more than I have, in this tournament as well as other football articles :) I have mostly been confining myself to some notable events (Premiership, Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga; Champions League, Europa League; Euro, World Cup) and pages involving teams that I am interested in (actually I am a Manucian, but Manchester United's pages are popular enough already, so I spend much time on Athletic Bilbao, and my national team's official tournaments). About the final, my favourite is France. Croatian midfielders and forwards are quite comparable to French, but France's defenders are considerably superior. France are also better physically (1 more rest day after the semi-finals, did not have to play any extra times), just not psychologically (not many people expected Croatia to go this far, so their mind would be quite relaxed). After World Cup, I think I will take a short wikibreak, take care of some non-wiki things, then return next month :) Centaur271188 (talk) 11:23, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
@Centaur271188: I agree, France should have the upper hand, but I also thought the same for the Euro final. But who knows with this tournament, never sure what to expect. Hopefully will be entertaining, would care for a bit more excitement than France's last match. And it's definitely quite a lot with the attention attracted to the articles, enjoy the break :) Cheers, S.A. Julio (talk) 05:57, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

Final kits

What was the base to restore the kits for the final? The shorts and socks are not confirmed yet by FIFA. If so, I want a source. Thanks. – Flix11 10:27, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

@Flix11: The article mentioned does seem to include information on the kits (with shorts and socks) from FIFA, I believe it is a screenshot from their internal/press information system. Other articles confirm this. And hopefully you can update FT for the final? Thanks again for all your work during the tournament. S.A. Julio (talk) 05:28, 14 July 2018 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: Well it is believable but yeah fine. Of course I will. Thank you too. – Flix11 02:31, 14 July 2018 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: Hey I want to ask. A user insisted to use lowercase "fourth place" instead of "Fourth Place" on Template:England squad 2018 FIFA World Cup. The capital each word version used everywhere, including Template:England squad 1990 FIFA World Cup. What should I do? Thanks. – Flix11 16:44, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

FR Yugoslavia

Hi, I see you reverted my edits, by saying just "unnecessary" based on what ? the country competed under the name of Yugoslavia, and I know this is a different Yugoslavia but we also don't use the name of SFR Yugoslavia for before 1998 tournaments. so why here ? Mohsen1248 (talk) 05:05, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

Well, the article on the previous Yugoslavia team is at Yugoslavia national football team. In order to avoid ambiguity, FR Yugoslavia should be used as it is clearer to readers (it doesn't hurt, does it?). If Wikipedia existed in 1998, prior to the name change, I think the article would be located at FR Yugoslavia national football team. If you look at Serbia and Montenegro national football team, "FR Yugoslavia" is used consistently. This is a unique situation, but if it benefits our readers (not all may be familiar), I think there is no reason to remove the clarification. S.A. Julio (talk) 23:56, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
Hi again, I got busy with other things and just forgot to continue this discussion, I also think there is no reason to have this "FR" thing. I already explained my reasons, there should be consistency between all wiki pages and they don't use "FR" for other sports (see volleyball, basketball etc) or also in these articles regarding the Olympics, Yugoslavia at the Olympics. if we are still in disagreement I will take this to the football project and let them decide because I really don't think that FR thing should be there. Mohsen1248 (talk) 14:28, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
WP:OTHERCONTENT applies, though it may be used elsewhere does not make it correct/need to be used here (I also suspect the template system plays a role, as when calling 'FR Yugoslavia', the default display name is only Yugoslavia). There's no reason not to be clear to our readers with no ambiguity, and it doesn't detract from the articles. The Olympics is different, for football we recognise FR Yugoslavia/Serbia and Montenegro as the same, separate from the Yugoslavia to 1992, hence the reason to be clear to readers who may not be familiar. Euro 2020

I have twice made minor wording edits to the venues table/section because I found some confusion in the given table, with included explanation of how I found it confusing in the edit note. Now twice you've later gone back later and changed it back to the original wording without any discussion as to why. You may really like your word choice more, but as I explained how it may (and did for me) lead to confusion, I'd think that'd be the primary concern. At least to me (predominantly American English, some British English interaction), the word "rejected" in such a case is ambiguous, given it a) doesn't indicate who rejected... whether the city rejected an offer or UEFA did, and b) is a full synonym for eliminated. It also gives no help for users wondering why they were rejected as opposed to eliminated. It's the type of thing I do believe a user can work out/guess at the intended meaning of, but might often requiring notable effort. So I figured a small change could clear up potential issues... and tried first a few clarifying words in the text, and then altering "rejected standard package" to "invalid standard package" to be much more direct and specific on why they those cities weren't selected (without any change in article length). But with your unexplained reversions, it comes across almost dismissive, as if you only want to have the article exactly as you like it, and maybe can't envision the challenges others might face in it? And also comes across almost as if you don't put much value to the well-intentioned good faith edits of others. It would seem an unnecessary degree of commotion, but if you're really set on your opinion against such edits, it could be opened to discussion with others to determine if I'm isolated in seeing confusion or to get further options. Or maybe such edits were really unintentional, perhaps due to data still on your system or keeping harmony with the Bids article (I just realized it has the same table)? Or just done quickly without significant intention regarding the wording? I realize you certainly work very hard on tons of articles, and often must stave off vandalism and harmful edits. And it looks like your work is of great value to all. So I certainly don't mean be any trouble, but would think it best to find a solution that might work well for all? Thanks JeopardyTempest (talk) 00:11, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

@JeopardyTempest: Sorry, there were a lot of disruptive edits on the page, so I decided to restore to an older, stable version. I didn't intend to revert the change, I've now restored the wording to "invalid". S.A. Julio (talk) 23:49, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
Very much appreciated, I'd figured that probably was the case, but became unsure! Thanks for all your good work and for putting up with my complaint!

Bot

Bot request filed Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/RonBot 7. Category has been renamed to Category:Association football player non-biographical articles. User:Ronhjones/Sandbox5 is now down to 43737 entries. Ronhjones (Talk) 22:21, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

If you are adding that cat to lots of page. Do you need a macro? If so add the contents of User:Ronhjones/anp.js to you <skin>.js (e.g if you use monobook, then edit monobook.js. You will find a link marked anp (on monobook - a new tab) - click that on any page and it will go into edit mode, add the cat and save. Ronhjones (Talk) 22:41, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Alright, though I think most of the non-biographies should be categorised. I've just fixed some improper categorisation (i.e. manager categories under the player tree), could the sandbox be updated to get the new count? Thanks, S.A. Julio (talk) 23:10, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
OK, It takes a good 2 hours, so will run when I go to bed (about 1-2am UK) - and then post in the morning. Ronhjones (Talk) 23:17, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
44649 results Ronhjones (Talk) 08:49, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
Trial was approved, and has been run. All OK so far. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:34, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Great, I've been working on adjusting some of the categories/pages that shouldn't be in the tree, almost complete. However, with the bot I noticed some of the excluded non-biographical pages were categorised as missing positions, for example 2008 WPS General Draft. S.A. Julio (talk) 20:05, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
Just make sure they are in Category:Association football player non-biographical articles and the bot will remove the category next time. Ronhjones (Talk) 20:12, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

@Ronhjones: Alright, and my latest count now is 43,523 articles matching to be categorised. Also, how was 1885–86 St. Mary's Y.M.A. season categorised here? I didn't see it on the sandbox list. And once everything is set, I can leave a message at WT:FOOTY to give a bit of an explanation of the task, and explain the "non-biographical articles" category if anyone comes across non-players in the uncategorised list. S.A. Julio (talk) 06:26, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

The joys, or not, of python vs. Windoze ( - python wins every time). If I write the page name in plain text, and I get a "UnicodeEncodeError", then I print the uft-8 string. If there is something else wrong, it will probably skip writing that item - possibly the dash, maybe the apostrophe (they always cause havoc - I think Windows wants a two together, like 1885–86 St. Mary''s Y.M.A. season to give the right answer). That page need to be in the exclude cat, so I've added that. Ronhjones (Talk) 14:21, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Thanks, though how does the page show up in the category tree? I've done quite a few searches under Category:Association football players using AWB, and have never come across that article. The page is only in Category:Southampton F.C. seasons and Category:English football clubs 1885–86 season, neither should be under the player category tree. S.A. Julio (talk) 15:06, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
There are so many categories. Who knows. I'll see if I can work it out, but there are so many cats having more cats...! Ronhjones (Talk) 16:13, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
Took a while - see https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=A._Varley&redirect=no. Should a redirect have a category? Ronhjones (Talk) 20:28, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Ah yes thanks, I should've realised, had the same issue with categorised redirects earlier. For redirects I don't see a need for a player category. Also, do you know of any quick way to find all the redirected pages in a list of articles? Would be useful to know if there are more in order to avoid the same issue. S.A. Julio (talk) 21:25, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
There should be a way... I'll have a read up on the Api query calls. Ronhjones (Talk) 21:33, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
I found that when one gets the wikitext of a page, there is an automatic seamless follow of redirects as default. We can adjust the call not to follow redirects, and we can make sure we don't add the category to a redirect page. I think that will stop any more issues. When we do the main run, I can make sure any redirects with cats are listed. Ronhjones (Talk) 23:56, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

@Ronhjones: Alright great. I'm also using AWB to (albeit slowly) scan pages and stop on any redirects, so I'll try to fix any that I find. S.A. Julio (talk) 00:47, 22 July 2018 (UTC)

Just waiting for bot approval now. This bit can take a while. One is only supposed to "poke" after 7 days with no answer (the bot group do like to have one person to approve the trial and a different one to final approve). Anyway, let's assume we get permission this week. I would like to plan a Friday night start (my broadband total is limited in peak times - editing that many pages might push it over the edge). Looking at the trial, I got about 25 pages a minute, which is great (if it keeps up) - for 44000 edits we can then be looking at about a 30 hour run - it will be nice if it works - been here before, a big run can sometimes fall over for no apparent reason. I would probably do a quick small trial to test the flagging of re-directs first.Ronhjones (Talk) 18:27, 22 July 2018 (UTC)
Did another dummy run - forgot to alter code for the changed the cat name, all OK now - in User:Ronhjones/Sandbox5 - 43498 titles. P.S. I can see two "List of..." in the list Ronhjones (Talk) 22:02, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Thanks, I added them as non-biographical. Still glancing through the list to make sure nothing was missed (as well as the category structure), but everything seems to be good. Let me know if anything else needs to be done. Also, with this edit by the bot, could the category be added above stub tags? Thanks, S.A. Julio (talk) 09:46, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
It would be a major change to pick a place to add the category - typically what is done is to get the entire text as a variable and concatenate the category - thus "pagetext" is the whole page "\n" is a new line, and then we add the cat thus...
pagetext = pagetext+"\n"+"[[Category:Association footballers not categorized by position]]"
I would have to scan the text to find the number of instances of "stub", then find the first one that is within a template and find the insertion point before that template - not easy, more likely to get some error. Trying to get intelligence into a bot is always tricky - you have to try and guess of ll the supid things that editors can do to cause a problem. We would need to go through more trials to get approval for such a change. What we can do without any issues is to add a line (or two) of code to make a new list of articles (having the cat added) that have "stub", and that list of stubs can then be put into some user sub-page. P.S. As 7 days is up on the bot application, I'v added a poke for action. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:10, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Alright, it is only a minor wikitext detail so it's no issue. Let me know when all is set to go, I can then give an overview to the FOOTY project, and hopefully the category can start to be reduced. Cheers, S.A. Julio (talk) 21:12, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
Approved with a ramp-up - see Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/RonBot 7. My plan is therefore...
  1. Thursday 01:00 UTC (i.e tonight)- run and do 1000 edits
  2. Friday 01:00 UTC - Next 2000 edits
  3. Saturday 01:00 UTC - Next 3000 edits
  4. Sunday 01:00 UTC - Full run, should finish before my Broadband goes into peak time at 07:00 UTC Monday.
Is that time schedule OK for you, or do you need it slower? Ronhjones (Talk) 14:56, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Sounds great, thanks! S.A. Julio (talk) 19:42, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
Great - All set up for he first wave. Takes about 2h to get all the pages and complete the comparisons to get list of pages to add the category to, so should start the 1000 edits at about 03:00 UTC - best estimate is 25 per minute, so should finish first wave 40 minutes later (all being well...). If wiki servers are too loaded they put in 120 sec timeouts, hopefully that won't be an issue. Ronhjones (Talk) 21:01, 1 August 2018 (UTC)

1000 pages edited. 46 minutes to load, edit and save the 1000 pages = 21.7 per minute (plus the initial searching overhead) I looked at a few, all looks OK to me. Onwards and Upwards... Ronhjones (Talk) 10:49, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Great, seems to have gone well, and the category is already being reduced. S.A. Julio (talk) 17:05, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Spoke too soon. :-) PC/Network/Modem went a little sick last night. RonBot1 was doing 1 page every 5 minutes, rather than 5 pages a minute. Not a chance that RonBot7 would even get through the first part! Re-boot PC, Re-boot Modem. Try tonight... Ronhjones (Talk) 13:04, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
Started this evening - just so I can check - running at full tilt again (>20 pages a minute) Ronhjones (Talk) 20:01, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
Alright, great! S.A. Julio (talk) 04:40, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
2000 wave went fine, will do the 3000 this evening, that leaves 37466 to do, then (to avoid my peak ISP), I'll do 13000 each night, and in 3 nights we are complete (fingers crossed). No redirects found so far. Ronhjones (Talk) 13:53, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
Had an idea about stubs - worked out a nice routine to scan characters, one by one, from end of article going backwards, until it found the newline before the {{ (there is a "stub"), and using that as the insertion point. Seems to be working OK Ronhjones (Talk) 20:51, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
3000 wave OK, as I said above now placed just before any stub template. All looking fine. Ronhjones (Talk) 23:04, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

Seems great! And once the initial run is over, how often will the bot scan to update the category? S.A. Julio (talk) 14:18, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

The first 13000 went in OK and nicely finished at 7am UK (1h before my peak time starts). You have plenty to pick from now. Next 13000 tonight, and then final amount the next night. Then it's been set to run on the 7th of each month. Ronhjones (Talk) 14:37, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Found one re-direct with cats - I'll let you decide what to do - https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Busts_of_Cristiano_Ronaldo&redirect=no Ronhjones (Talk) 14:40, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Alright, perfect. The redirect seems to have been added due to an incorrect change to Category:Cristiano Ronaldo, now fixed. S.A. Julio (talk) 20:12, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Also, are you able to use AWB to list more than 25,000 items? As I can't use the NoLimits plugin, could you possibly do a search using the list comparer tool? Once the bot has fully populated 'not categorized by position', I was hoping to compare the articles in that category vs. the articles which transclude {{Infobox football biography}}, and get a list of which articles are unique to 'not categorized by position' (i.e. players missing a position category and a football infobox). Thanks, S.A. Julio (talk) 22:41, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes. Admins and Bots both have the "apihighlimits" permission. I'll have a look tomorrow Ronhjones (Talk) 23:31, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
See User talk:S.A. Julio/No Infobox Ronhjones (Talk) 10:38, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Perfect! Thanks again for all the help. Also, I've created four new position categories (Category:Women's association football central defenders, Category:Women's association football fullbacks, Category:Women's association football wingers, Category:Women's association football utility players), could these be added to the list as well for the next run, like the utility category? Thanks, S.A. Julio (talk) 21:41, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
No problem, I'll put them in tonight, in readiness. Ronhjones (Talk) 21:47, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

All done - 4 categories added to list 2 Special:Diff/854385523 Ronhjones (Talk) 23:36, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

2018 ICC

I noticed that you at once got the wrong score of the penalties. You should not be too hurried. Penalties are fast-moving content. Besides I think only you and me who updated it. Anyway thank you for updating it. I was the only one updating MCI-LIV earlier. – Flix11 (talk) 05:38, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

Ah well only a small typo. S.A. Julio (talk) 09:55, 27 July 2018 (UTC)
Can you add the referee's name on MUN-LIV and attendance on Chelsea-Inter, if you log in to the ICC site? Thanks. – Flix11 (talk) 23:29, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Added the referee, though I can't find the attendance. S.A. Julio (talk) 23:44, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

Soccerway/World Football

Soccerway] doesn't distiguish between MLS playoffs and MLS regular season games. World Football does distinguish between the two. Calling my change "unnecessary changes" isn't really accurate. Kingjeff (talk) 20:49, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

@Kingjeff: More in the sense that since Soccerway and Worldfootball are the two sources used, the references can just be added by the 'updated' template, reducing the table width. The removal of Worldfootball was unintentional, I've added it next to the Soccerway source. S.A. Julio (talk) 20:58, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

New articles

Hey, great work creating new articles for tootballers. I just think that fupa.net should not be on there, it's the same as transfermarkt. Any given user can edit matches and stats. I did it myself for me and my team. So, not reliable for me. Kante4 (talk) 19:03, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

@Kante4: Ah I didn't realise, too bad. They always seemed to have the most detailed stats for the lower leagues, I'll discontinue it now though. S.A. Julio (talk) 19:41, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, no worries. I like it aswell but you can edit a club if you login. Kante4 (talk) 19:46, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

Explained revert on Talk

Hi Julio,

I re-added the sort option. The reason is explained on Talk:2018_International_Champions_Cup. It really is necessary in order to read many types of data from the table. Great floors (talk) 16:22, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

I've responded to the thread. S.A. Julio (talk) 16:34, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
By reverting twice :-) Wikipedia has gotten so friendly these past years. Great floors (talk) 16:38, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
It would be best for there to be a consensus before changing the table. S.A. Julio (talk) 16:41, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

Reverting isn’t productive at all

S.A. Julio, please stop reverting my edits. I’m just trying to be friendly and I’m a fan of football. I don’t add the flags just for them to be there. Also, if you don’t like the flags, then change all of the Wiki pages for the AFC Asian Cup. I’m not trying to be rude. I understand. I’m just telling

Neil :) Hispanicfilmmaker (talk) 21:38, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

@Hispanicfilmmaker: Please see MOS:INFOBOXFLAG, as I have explained flags should not be used in the infobox for decoration, any articles which do use this should have it removed. Now you've moved to outright vandalism with some of your edits like this, please stop. Also, I'd recommend not reverting/disruptively editing while logged out, that is WP:SOCKPUPPETRY. S.A. Julio (talk) 21:44, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

I apologize and I’m sorry

S.A. Julio. I understand and I’m sorry. Thank you. And I have not been doing anything logged out. I’m very confused when you say that I’m editing while logged out. That may be someone else, but that is not me.

Cheers, Neil :) Hispanicfilmmaker (talk) 22:46, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

@Hispanicfilmmaker: Alright, though I'd say WP:DUCK applies with 73.215.161.117 (talk · contribs), the same type of edits have been made, all within the last day. Either way, as you've just registered, welcome and hopefully things can be more productive in the future (there's lots of work to be done in your area of interest!). I hope the reverts weren't taken the wrong way, but our policies exist for a reason :) S.A. Julio (talk) 04:17, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

Graphics for football line-ups

Dear S.A. Julio,

I'd like to learn to create graphics for football games to publish on Wikipedia.

I saw you created the Line-ups graphic for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Final.

Please let me know if you could teach me how to create one of those graphics from scratch.

Kind regards,

Hello. Looks like you missed Category:Association football utility players off the list. Please see User talk:Ronhjones#Association football positions task. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 20:09, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi. Could you please change the logo at Serie A to the new logo at it:Serie A? Thanks. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 14:07, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

"A heading should not contain links"

Probably.

At some of those pages, the headers used to consist of the {{fb}} template, so not only did they contain links, but they also displayed the flag, which made it more difficult to link to the particular sections. You had to check if the specific page did or didn't use the template, and if it did, you had to insert an extra space between the # and the country name, like this: [[1982_FIFA_World_Cup_squads#_Argentina]].

First I did replace the templates with plain unlinked country names, but then I realized it would be odd if a page listing entire detailed national team squads never actually linked to the national team articles. And I could think of no better place for such links than the headers, so I added them. Do you have any other ideas? --Theurgist (talk) 11:37, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

@Theurgist: Yes, thanks for removing the fb template from the headings. The best solution is to include the link in prose, such as UEFA Euro 2016 squads. However, it's difficult as prose is only included on squad pages for the last World Cups, though all the countries are linked in the "finalist" templates at the bottom. I've now added links for the 2018 squad article. S.A. Julio (talk) 02:36, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
There's the Goalscorers article also. The rule, as stated at MOS:HEADING, implies that such links are not absolutely banned but just undesirable, and then less so if the entire heading, rather than only part of it, is linked. With a regular pattern where every second-level heading consists of just a country name and links to that country's national team, I don't think the linked headings would be that much of a problem, at least no more than artificially and sometimes redundantly making up prose so as to mention the country name once again and link it. And even if a template somewhere at the bottom contains the links, it's only natural that the sections discussing the squads should contain them too. --Theurgist (talk) 14:56, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

I suggest that we don't add columns to the career statistics table until there is actually an appearance in the appropriate competition. Kingjeff (talk) 19:40, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

I'd say since he was in the first team and included in the Champions League squad that it is still valid to include the column and first team row. S.A. Julio (talk) 03:27, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

Toronto - Tigres

--Mauricio C. (talk) 01:59, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

@Rodinelson Nivaeldo da Silva: There is a long-standing consensus on WT:FOOTY to not use sponsored stadium names when the stadium is known by another commonly used name. A move discussion should be opened if you wish to move the page. S.A. Julio (talk) 03:39, 28 September 2018 (UTC)

About the recent edit on the page 2013 UEFA SUPER CUP

Hello sir,I saw you recently reverted my edit in the page 2013 UEFA SUPER CUP FINAL summary, can you please help me how to add more sources and improve formatting? Malignant Cell (talk) 16:19, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

@Malignant Cell: I think 2018 UEFA Champions League Final#Summary is a good example for a match summary, the section is not too long and has many inline sources. The section you added seems to be missing punctuation (lacking spaces following full stops), as well as the diacritics in players' names, and needs further copyediting. I'd also avoid WP:PEACOCK phrases, such as "beautifully saved" and "incredible header". S.A. Julio (talk) 16:32, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

RonBot

Died in the night half way through run. May have lost connection. I noticed this evening and re-run. Quite a few added to list (almost 300) - see Special:Contributions/RonBot from 22:16, 7 October 2018 to 22:30, 7 October 2018. If once a month is too far apart - let me know, could make it bi-weekly. Ronhjones (Talk) 22:33, 7 October 2018 (UTC)

@Ronhjones: Alright, maybe there was an issue with last month too, hence the number of articles (for example Nadezhda Ulyanovskaya was created in August). And bi-weekly sounds good if possible. Also, if you have any time would you mind helping with another search using the AWB list comparer tool? I was hoping to compare the list of articles at User:S.A. Julio/sandbox vs. the articles which transclude {{Infobox football biography}}, and get a list of which articles are unique to only the sandbox page, would be very much appreciated. Also, I'm not as familiar with AWB's more advanced functions. I've been trying to categorise players by the position listed in their infobox, using a regex to skip pages that don't contain the position I'm categorising (i.e. goalkeeper). However this is a slow process, would you know if there is a way to have AWB generate a list of the articles which are not skipped (with something like external processing)? Thanks, S.A. Julio (talk) 02:39, 8 October 2018 (UTC)
It's quite a run, so one is always at the mercy of BT. Windows schedule does not have a bi-weekly, I just found, so changed to run on 7th and 21st. I'll have a look at the AWB query. Ronhjones (Talk) 10:50, 8 October 2018 (UTC)
Results (using "No Limits" plugin):
  1. What transcludes "template:Infobox football biography" = 155710 pages (I always forget to add the word "template" and get zero hits...!)
  2. Links on sandbox = 10592 pages
  3. Unique to (1) = 145237 pages
  4. Common to (1) and (2) = 10473 pages
  5. Unique to (2) = 119 pages - User:S.A. Julio/Compare
The other problem, I'll have a think about and get back to you. Ronhjones (Talk) 11:15, 8 October 2018 (UTC)
When you use AWB, there is an option "Use pre-parse mode". When that is selected, then when you hit start, it will run non-stop through the list of files (no pages are saved in this mode), files that are designated as "skipped" are removed from the list. When it gets to the end of the list, you are left with a short list of the un-skipped pages. Is that what you are after? Ronhjones (Talk) 01:07, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Brilliant, surprised I never noticed that option before. Thanks for the help with this and the query! S.A. Julio (talk) 14:51, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

@Ronhjones and S.A. Julio: - another possible bot run, is to cross-reference all articles in position-specific stub categories (eg Category:English football goalkeeper stubs) with those in Category:Association footballers not categorized by position and get a bot to move them from 'Association footballers not categorized by position' to the appropriate position category? GiantSnowman 15:26, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

@GiantSnowman: Was planning on doing that soon, currently working on categorising by position in the infobox. The only issue is sometimes the stub tag is incorrect, for example here on Yasuto Wakizaka, a midfielder that had a goalkeeper stub tag. So a semi-automatic run allows for a quick check to verify the category is appropriate. S.A. Julio (talk) 16:32, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
Wonderful - I'd noted your current task as my Watchlist is full of your edits! On that note, strange request - could you please hold off making these kind of edits over the weekend please? I'm away Friday to Monday this week and fear that I'll come back and be unable to check pages, because you'll have 'swamped' the watchlist... GiantSnowman 17:14, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: Sorry, I too am familiar with the occasional sudden influx of AWB edits in my own watchlist! Seems as though they should've added a way to filter out these edits with the implementation of the new watchlist... At least bots edits can be hidden, but this task didn't seem ideal for a bot given it's a one-time run. And sure, I'll avoid large runs over the weekend. S.A. Julio (talk) 06:06, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
Much obliged! GiantSnowman 07:56, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

The "unexplained" removal of Boca Juniors squad numbers (according to your edit) refers to some numbers that were wrong and therefore I fixed them. I based on this video on youtube and some Argentine sports magazines published in those times.

I don't know if Borussia M. numbers are right, but in the case of Boca Juniors, most of them were wrong so the team wore the same numbers that in Copa Libertadores, p.e.: Zanabria (18), Salinas (17), Pavón (21) (players wearing those numbers can be seen in the video cited above). - Fma12 (talk) 23:10, 24 October 2018 (UTC)

FIFA World cup 1998

Hi, You reverted my change because you follow "FIFA report". It is a wrong way. The so-called official FIFA reports gives too often mistakes. The reason is very simple: FIFA reports followed the "live commentaries" of game and corrections (about goalscorers, cards as double yellow or direct red,...) didn't appeared on it. The "FIFA official reports" are published (on line) soon after the game. Video footages of concerned games are very better sources. Friendly. SHANON11

@Shanon11: Also see FIFA's technical report (page 113) published in late 2002. Most other reliable sources such as Soccerway, RSSSF and kicker credit Teboho Mokoena with the goal. S.A. Julio (talk) 13:59, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

@Zackmann08: Well the name followed Category:Sports and games work group articles needing infoboxes, though it can be renamed... Footy bot played up today!

Something amiss with connection, so it never finished (normally 3 hours is enough on my connection - roll on FTTH - next year I hope). After a router re-boot, ran OK late this evening, and added 91 players to Category:Association footballers not categorized by position Ronhjones (Talk) 00:16, 8 December 2018 (UTC)

@Ronhjones: Great, thanks! Also, I was curious about the possibility of a similar task for nationality (which is the only other category all footballer biographies should have). As Category:Association football players by position can now acts as a convenient "index" of all footballers on Wikipedia, could this be used to see which are missing nationality categories? (Currently there are 384 categories in Category:Association football players by nationality and Category:Women's association football players by nationality, excluding those sorted under * and +. Only the top level of the nationality categories would need to be checked, no subcats). I'd be curious how many articles currently don't include a nationality category. S.A. Julio (talk) 02:31, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
OK, I'll have a look and see what we can rake out. As I am not writing to the articles with the bot, it becomes a WP:BOTUSERSPACE action, and needs no approval, so long as I write to a page in User:RonBot's user space. Ronhjones (Talk) 02:46, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Alright thanks! Not a huge priority, but would be interesting to look into, I wouldn't know if it's in the hundreds or thousands. If it isn't extremely large maybe I'll see about properly categorising them in one go. S.A. Julio (talk) 03:12, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
I've been playing with some new ideas in python - looking at speeding up the original task7. I've found a way of a fast list compare, so I thought I would try it for this task and see how well it works - it does away with hundred of thousands of "if" statements, which are usually quick, but the sheer number starts to make an impact. Anyway I made two lists...
  1. Category:Association football players by position
  2. Category:Association football players by nationality plus Category:Women's association football players by nationality
Then basically ListD=List1-List2 gives ListD of everything in List1 that is not in List2
This list has been placed at User:RonBot/Football players missing nationality, and I've made then all clickable links. Have a look and see if this looks like the data you want (743 items) Ronhjones (Talk) 21:00, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
Great, thanks, exactly the list I was looking for. Also, I was reviewing a few of the articles listed, and noticed Bob Geary (baseball). It seems as though he was mistakenly included in Category:San Francisco Seals (soccer) players before, which was corrected in October to Category:San Francisco Seals (baseball) players. None of the remaining categories are in the footballer category tree, shouldn't the article have been removed from Category:Association footballers not categorized by position by the bot? S.A. Julio (talk) 07:28, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
Err...No. Because he's not in any of the 21 "footballers who have a position" lists, then Task7 won't remove him as he has not a position. I'm going to rewrite Task7 based on the success of this run (which is Task15), and I'll look and see if there is any easy way finding such anomalies. Also do you want Task15 run at (weekly?) intervals, there's bound to be some extra ones coming along with no nationality, and it's a fairly quick run with the better coding. Ronhjones (Talk) 04:08, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Ah I must have misremembered with the category removal, but I'd be interested to see how many anomalies there are. And sure, weekly sounds good for Task15. Thanks, S.A. Julio (talk) 04:18, 12 December 2018 (UTC)
Windows Schedule Task set for noon Saturday. Ronhjones (Talk) 16:43, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

@Ronhjones: Great, also I forgot about Category:Association football player non-biographical articles, could these pages be kept out of User:RonBot/Football players missing nationality as well? Thanks, S.A. Julio (talk) 19:43, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

That old chestnut. Starting with the list1 (above) I did not think any would creep in as if they have a position, then they won't be in Category:Association football player non-biographical articles - then I saw Best European Goalkeeper (sigh). Ronhjones (Talk) 22:19, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

Sorry missed this at first, looks great thanks! S.A. Julio (talk) 04:17, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: The bot seems to be categorising players which already have a position? Example here. S.A. Julio (talk) 05:52, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

@Ronhjones: So what's the status of the bot, has the miscategorisation been resolved? Also, would it be possible to get a list of articles which are in Category:Association footballers not categorized by position but are no longer in any other subcategory of Category:Association football players? S.A. Julio (talk) 17:22, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

Still having it's moments, running a dummy trial now. It might have to wait for the version 2 (re-write = half done). The main problem seems to be that sometimes it fails (or wiki fails) to send a block of names (all bots can only get 5000 results per Api call), thus the constructed list of names to add (or remove) templates from is not correct. Since there are (I think) only 22 position categories, it makes sense to check each proposed page for one of the 22 categories before adding/removing the template - I will do that in the version 2 (V1 is already too slow to add so much extra). Ronhjones (Talk) 19:03, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
Dummy run looking to remove a lot of templates. I traced that back to this edit - https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category%3AEnglish_football_midfielder_stubs&type=revision&diff=878795810&oldid=417240013 - it makes the "position known" list much bigger - I assume that is an OK situation? My guess at 22 position categories, sadly had now jumped to 271 as that edit was not the only block of sub cats added - see User:Ronhjones/Sandbox5. I'll do some more checks of the dummy run log file, and wait for your response before doing a live run. Ronhjones (Talk) 22:57, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Could the bot ignore these footballer 'stubs by position' cats and only check the previous number? As a stub category (via a template) should't count as "position known" for a player. Also, you mentioned 22, but I think it's only the below 20 which should have to be checked. Thanks, S.A. Julio (talk) 23:18, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
Categories
*Category:Association football defenders
Works for me - it will make the Version 2 final check much easier - seeing if one of 20 cats is in a page is way quicker than seeing if one of 271 cats is on the page. I'll will fix the "Position Known" list to just these 20 cats and no recursion. I looked at an old log file - it was 22 - derrived from the original 15 given at Wikipedia:Bot_requests/Archive_76#Association_footballers_not_categorized_by_position - the missing 2 are Category:Association football goalkeepers who have scored and Category:Women's association football goalkeepers who have scored - let me know if you want to add those in. Ronhjones (Talk) 00:47, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: I believe those two don't need to be included as they are non-diffusing subcategories, so all articles in them should also be in Category:Association football goalkeepers or Category:Women's association football goalkeepers. Maybe the bot could copy any missing articles it finds which are in the 'who have scored' categories to the respective main position category? Also, regarding "articles which are in Category:Association footballers not categorized by position but are no longer in any other subcategory of Category:Association football players", could the bot eventually update a list periodically with these articles, similar to User:RonBot/Football players missing nationality? Thanks, S.A. Julio (talk) 02:20, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
OK, I'll set it for the fixed set of 20 "position categories", and see how it goes. Probably a dummy run tonight, and if it looks good, then a full run tomorrow. Then I'll think about the other questions. Ronhjones (Talk) 17:43, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
Good bot run with just the 20 categories completed. 1463 players put back into Category:Association footballers not categorized by position Ping GiantSnowman as well Ronhjones (Talk) 17:33, 19 January 2019 (UTC).
@Ronhjones: Looks good. I was curious, I have a (long) list of articles and was hoping to see which ones are not in Category:Living people. However, given the size of the category, even PetScan is unable to retrieve the contents. Would you have a suggestion for retrieving this or maybe using NoLimits in AWB? S.A. Julio (talk) 18:02, 19 January 2019 (UTC)
That's a BIG category, wiki always limits to 5000 names per call, so that's almost 180 large Api calls just to get all the names. AWB might work, but it might fall over as well.
Try this - go to Special:Search and enter "Carol Klein" incategory: "Living people", and click Search - result is you find her page. Do the same "Dianne Oxberry" incategory: "Living people" and her page does not come up (she died recently), you need to change it to "Dianne Oxberry" -incategory: "Living people" to get the result (note the minus before the "incategory"). I think that's the better way, the amount of data to and from wiki is then minimal (a simple search, and a few page names returned). I see that as an easy bot task. I would suggest you put your list into a new sub-page of User:RonBot - the bot can then read it and write back the answers to the same page (and no bot approval needed). Since DATETIES only applies to English-speaking nations (and the US military) we have to fall back on DATERET, and the first editors elected to use MDY format. That's the case in a number of players from Mexico do Argentina. Walter Görlitz (talk) 06:54, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

@Walter Görlitz: Ah, must have missed the "English-speaking" part. Though, as football originated from England, I suggest that all football biographies be converted to DMY per DATETIES S.A. Julio (talk) 07:11, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
Absolutely agree on the origin of the sport which is why I go with DMY for football articles when there there is any uncertainty. Walter Görlitz (talk) 15:52, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

A little help required.

Hi, I have a poster at OTRS who has an issue with Harry Kane. It says (5th paragraph) "Kane featured and scored at UEFA Euro 2016". He says Harry never scored at UEFA Euro 2016 (seems he only scored in the qualifiers). I'm sure you would know where to check! Ronhjones (Talk) 22:38, 3 January 2019 (UTC)

@Ronhjones: Correct, he never did score at the final tournament, only in the qualifiers. Seems to be the result of a recent lede rewriting. S.A. Julio (talk) 04:15, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

Thai names

Hi. Could you change the names of the Thai players shown at File:THA-IND 2019-01-06.svg, from their surnames to their given names? It has been the practice in all football competitions' articles where Thailand is competing to use the given name instead of the surname. This file seems the only exception so changing the names would make it consistent. An explanation regarding this is explained User_talk:Molecule_Extraction#Thai_names here by a Wikipedian in Thailand. Thank you very much.

Vietnamese name

For a tournament where a 23 man squad is announced, it is better to probably use only their first name as they are unnecessarily long. You may notice that how in the previous years only the first names are used in all the competitions including the age group ones. In the qualifiers the full name may be used because lot of their names tend to be the same, for example there are 2 Bùi Tiến Dũng's in the Vietnamese squad. If it is to be written as other East Asian names then other long names like Japanese names should also probably be given similar style.--Anbans 585 (talk) 18:07, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

Cat:Association footballers from Northern Ireland

Hello. Noticed this being added to a couple of footballers on my watchlist, and wondered whether playing for its national team at some level is enough to qualify for being "from" Northern Ireland? E.g. Lee Camp has a grandparent born in NI, which qualifies him for their international team, but he (and his parents) are "from" somewhere in England. What I suppose I'm asking is what the "from" means. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 19:52, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

@Struway2: I agree the category name is a bit misleading. Though, I'd think international players should also have the "parent" nationality category of their team(s)? For example, a player such as Luis Monti should also be in Category:Italian footballers? Also note the top of Category:Northern Ireland international footballers, which states: Players in this category should also be included in Category:Association footballers from Northern Ireland. Looking at the history, Category:Association footballers from Northern Ireland was moved back in 2009 because of the disputed use of the term "Northern Irish". However, I'd think a better title of the category would be Category:Northern Ireland association footballers, similar to other categories such as Category:Democratic Republic of the Congo footballers. Maybe this naming issue should be brought up at WP:FOOTY? S.A. Julio (talk) 20:23, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
It probably is just the name that I have a problem with. Category:Republic of Ireland association footballers, so named, explicitly "includes players who were born in what is now the Republic of Ireland or who have played for the Republic of Ireland national football team at senior level, junior level or both". If that's the scope of the corresponding NI category, Category:Northern Ireland association footballers would seem appropriate. But it's more than a football issue, and sensitive: the suggestion of "Northern Ireland people by occupation" certainly didn't go down well in 2009... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 21:57, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
@Struway2: Yeah, a bit of a strange situation. Using the word "from" seems to add unnecessary ambiguity, with a similar mention back in 2010 of a category move (though met with no response). The overall Irish category structure seems complicated (e.g. Category:Republic of Ireland association footballers is not connected to Category:Sportspeople from the Republic of Ireland) and has gone through many discussions, so I'm unsure of whether it would be worth the effort. Cheers, S.A. Julio (talk) 23:32, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

Help

Hey, i know football is your priority but can you help me with this 2019 Men's FIH Pro League. Teams are ranked by points percentage, not points. Is there a way to have that shown instead of points? I looked for it but maybe it's not there or i am just too stupid. Kante4 (talk) 15:42, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

@Kante4: You're right, the module didn't support the points percentage before. I've now added it, the percent can be displayed with |ranking_style=percentage. I believe everything should be correct? Let me know if there is anything incorrect, or if the numbers/decimal should be formatted differently. S.A. Julio (talk) 18:33, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
Wow awesome, thanks. FIH displays it like this (83 instead of .833) but i'm fine with how it is. Not sure what is better... Kante4 (talk) 18:35, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
@Kante4: Alright, if you prefer the percentage out of 100, then |percentage_format=hundred 1 decimal or |percentage_format=hundred 2 decimals works. S.A. Julio (talk) 19:14, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

Hey, I added the numbers of a couple players whose numbers were visible in pictures on their Instagram/Twitter, and you removed my edits for them being unsourced. 2019–20 CONCACAF Nations League

HI S.A Julio The Concacaf Nations League, specifically at the moment the Qualifying Stage, uses an IP protected format, created by Leandro Shara and known as the Pots System (c). See also in Maurice Banach article

Hi Julio, I saw that you removed the link to Heinz Baumann from the See Also section in the Maurice Banach article [5] for not being related closely enough. Well, I added the link because I think Baumann was quite closely related. He supported the team members, family and friends in the struggles after Banach's death, which is documented in many sources, including some published decades after the event, indicating that those involved back then still remember Baumann for his support even now. I think these kinds of associations are exactly what WP:SEEALSO is about. Some sources state that this support is what actually established his role as "FC pastor" in the decades afterwards, while I also found one source stating that he was already engaged in the role for quite some while before that event - either case, it was an important piece in his history as FC pastor - and vice versa. Therefore I think the link would be justified and in the interest of the readers. What do you think? --Matthiaspaul (talk) 20:56, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

@Matthiaspaul: Ah alright, I guess I didn't see Baumann's direct role afterward, I've now restored the link. S.A. Julio (talk) 00:54, 16 March 2019 (UTC)

Hello there, from Portugal,

I was only striving for coherence when I did my arrangements, and now I elaborate on them even tough part of my reasons are already in the edit summary: 1 - all the reference fields in the same order (URL/title/trans-title/publisher/language/date/access-date); 2 - removed overlinking in that new Kicker source you added, #1 already has the magazine linked, no need for it more than once; 3 - Kicker should be treated a publisher, not a newspaper (hence, "web" at the start of ref and not "news").

Out of respect for you and your work, I changed "accessdate" to "access-date" in all the refs, even though I do not understand the difference. If you choose to revert me again no worries it stays how you want, was only aiming for coherence in display.

Disciplinary records for Euro Qualifiers

Hi, long time no see :) I have been quite busy in real life after World Cup, so I have not edited much (except Athletic Bilbao's season page). It seems that we have no players serving suspensions from Nations League. I hope you could confirm that information. Thanks in advance :) By the way, this time UEFA statistics page is worthless, I can no longer use it to track disciplinary records, like I did in World Cup qualification :( Centaur271188 (talk) 11:11, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

@Centaur271188: Hello! I've meant to add the suspension info but procrastinated, UEFA publishes a list prior to each matchday. Currently ten players are listed, though all the suspensions except for Dejan Lovren come from youth competitions. For carry-over suspensions, I'd think only players receiving a senior call-up (i.e. Croatia national football team#Current squad) should be listed? S.A. Julio (talk) 13:03, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
Thanks again. I agree that we should mention Lovren only, however I would also like to add a note (like 2016 qualifiers) or some words (like 2018 qualification) to clarify his case better. After last night's results I think we could now add Russia's Golovin and Latvia's Ciganiks. Centaur271188 (talk) 14:15, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
@Centaur271188: I added wording similar to 2018 qualification as "carried over" is a bit misleading as the suspension was given in January. Also hopefully the scorer module isn't too confusing, it's extremely useful in tallying all the players. It automatically sorts by number of goals (in the group/playoffs/overall), nationality, and surname (diacritics are also sorted correctly). If there are two or more parts to the surname, can be used to 'connect' the surname for sorting purposes, e.g. [[Jón Daði Böðvarsson]]. S.A. Julio (talk) 17:24, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
Yes, I saw your edit about Lovren's suspension. By the way, thanks for correcting and advising. About the module, I just love it. With it we now have a centralised information storage which can be extracted and used in many articles, that is far better than wandering through 'Goalscorers' sections and updating one by one. Hopefully I will get used to it soon. :) Centaur271188 (talk) 20:26, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

Euro 2020 Qualification play-off positions

Hi,

I added a new section to the play-off page last night showing the 16 teams who are currently in the play-off positions for each of the 4 play-offs. You deleted it leaving a comment saying that there was no such thing as "current" play-off teams. I therefore renamed it "Provisional" but you deleted it again today.

I do believe that there is value in showing this information as it is a very dynamic and non-trivial situation and is not immediately obvious which teams are currently in line to end up in the play-off spots. It's similar to why we show the group tables throughout the competition even though the only table that matters is the one after all of the games have been completed.

If you are not happy with having this information on this particular page can you suggest an alternative location for it? I tried to add it directly to the main Euro 2020 page instead but I realised that that was just a link back to the play-offs page which is why I updated it here.

Sperick (talk) 14:19, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

@Sperick: This table is not necessary, there already is a table showing the teams which have priority. Teams should only be added once they have guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. This would be similar to listing England and Luxembourg as "provisional participants" at UEFA Euro 2020 since they are first in their groups, which makes little sense. S.A. Julio (talk) 14:50, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

The issue with the existing priority list is that there is no connection between that and the current state of the qualification groups. Now for League D this is unlikely to be a problem since we expect the 4 teams at the top of the priority list to be the 4 teams that will ultimately end up in that play-off. However for the higher leagues this is probably not going to be the case. In League A, especially the situation is likely to get quite complex.

"This would be similar to listing England and Luxembourg as "provisional participants" at UEFA Euro 2020 since they are first in their groups, which makes little sense."

And yet on the main qualification page they currently are marked as the provisional qualifiers (by way of them being highlighted in light green).

If you are dead set against the section that I added then as a compromise I suggest that an additional column can be added to the priority list table showing the current group positions of each team so that people can more readily work out who are currently in the play-off spots. Alternatively, a new high-light colour could added to show which teams are currently in the play-off spots.

Sperick (talk) 15:48, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

@Sperick: Yes the standings have a green highlight, but the teams are not listed separately as having 'provisionally' qualified. At this point, with the qualifiers just begun, I see little benefit from this provisional list, and it may add to the confusion for readers of an already complex process. S.A. Julio (talk) 17:27, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

Krestovsky Stadium

Hey there, S.A. Julio

Page name for Gazprom Arena has beed reverted to Krestovsky Stadium but it never has been an official name for the stadium, so I'm little bit confused.

I think that the article name should reflect the name that currently used.

--Venuelab (talk) 16:57, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

@Venuelab: There is a consensus on WP:FOOTY to use non-sponsored names when possible (i.e. Westfalenstadion, not Signal Iduna Park). I'm unaware if this stadium was referred to as "Krestovsky Stadium" during construction, maybe opening a WP:Requested move discussion would be the best option in order to gain consensus. S.A. Julio (talk) 17:07, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: I have requested a move and it was approved without any discussion :-( In our case, there is no official non-sponsored name, just a "Saint Petersburg Stadium" that was used on the FIFA World Cup. Anyway, "Krestovsky Stadium" is the completely incorrect name. Could you please explain my further actions? I'm pretty newbie wiki user. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Venuelab (talkcontribs) 17:18, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
@Venuelab: Ah correct, I moved the page back because no one participated in the discussion, as not many people likely noticed it. However, some recent articles (here and here) seem to imply the name Saint Petersburg Stadium/Arena was the official name beforehand. S.A. Julio (talk) 17:50, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
@S.A. Julio: That's right, the name "Saint Peterburg Stadium" was used during FIFA Confederation Cup and FIFA World Cup 2018. But "Krestovsky Stadium" has never been used and it's completely wrong :-) Should I request a move again? --Venuelab (talk) 19:03, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

Fiorin Durmishaj → Fiorin Ntourmisai

Fiorin Durmishaj has changed the name from Albanian language into Greek language (Fiorin Ntourmisai), he in the protocol of the Greek Football Federation and UEFA, it is named in its new Greek name (Fiorin Ntourmisai).[1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by DoktorDashi (talkcontribs) 19:30, 26 March 2019 (UTC)

@DoktorDashi: See WP:COMMONNAME, article titles are based on how reliable English-language sources refer to the article's subject. There are no English sources that use the name "Fiorin Ntourmisai" other than UEFA, virtually all English sources use "Fiorin Durmishaj". S.A. Julio (talk) 20:04, 26 March 2019 (UTC)

Confusion

Hi, i am new to wikipedia and as i get familiar with the rules here i find something confused me. When i look up the 2019 AFC Champions League, i find Hhkohh explained in the edit summary that 'although still in progress but unless JSS kick 2 more goals and SHE kick 3 more goals' on 7 November 2018. Here is my question: i know that we can't make live edits. But under the circumstance above, can we make live edits? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2408:8207:C43:B3F0:FDFD:83F0:B02D:A50D (talk) 11:48, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

I would wait until results are finalised before making these types of supplementary edits, even if the outcome is already clear. S.A. Julio (talk) 13:46, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

1962 FIFA World Cup Final tactical line-up scheme

Hello! I found your name under the tactical line-up scheme for the 1962 WC final, so I assume you are the creator. I wonder what was the basic source for determining players' positions on the pitch? I've been searching for 1962 WC tactical line-ups in many sources and also I've watched the games which I could find online including the final. Judging by what I have found I can say that the Czech line-up in fact was a bit different. Czech TV broadcasters give such tactics of their team (fisrt two minutes of the video): Defenders (from R to L): 12 - Tichý, 5 - Pluskal, 3 - Popluhár, 4 - Novák (c), Midfielders: 19 - Kvašňák, 6 - Masopust, Forwards: 17 - Pospíchal, 8 - Scherer, 18 - Kadraba, 11 - Jelínek. Actually the video of the final match shows that the Czechs played according to this scheme and Jelínek surely occupied the left wing in attack. The same way he did in other Czechoslovakia games, e.g. against Spain. To sum it all up I suggest that we discuss it and possibly find some more sources to prove what the real line-up for the Czechs was. Can you make some more tactical schemes for the same tournament? Algorus (talk) 13:23, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

@Algorus: Not sure of the original source, I believe I used the formation which already listed in the line-up table of the article. I can update the line-up per the video, should I also adjust the lineup of Brazil as seen in the video? And sure, let me know what other matches to add tactical schemes for. S.A. Julio (talk) 19:09, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
Great! I'm glad you support my idea. The Brazilian formation for the final game is almost correct. The only thing to be changed are the names of Zito and Didi - Didi was playing in midfield closer to the right side, Zito to the left. Now I'm trying to get right all the formations of the teams which played in Group 3. I take it quite seriously and double-check each team line-up using articles online and videos. I will let you know as soon as I finish. It would be nice if we could add the line-ups to this page. If you also make kits design this page will surely help you with this. Algorus (talk) 20:26, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

Hello again! I've finally finished checking out the formations of the Group 3 teams of the 1962 FIFA World Cup. Everything seems to be in order now though some slight discrepancies between the text sources and commentators' words exist. I'd like to point out that Brazil played 4-2-4 attacking and 4-3-3 defending in most matches of the tournament. That means that Zagallo was placed a little bit behind the other Brazilian forwards and often helped in the midfield. The Czechs also used 4-2-4 through the first three games keeping basically the same people on the pitch. Mexican formation looked like 4-2-4 as well and the Spanish played 3-2-5 according to the Spanish source I found. As I could judge by the videos outside right and left along with the centre forward Puskas were the main attacking force getting some help from inside forwards placed slightly backwards. Thus they formed a big W of the Spanish attack. If you could make tactical schemes for all the group matches using these notes that would be just perfect for the article. 2018 FIFA World Cup standings

I am trying to add standings to the 2018 FIFA World Cup page because I think it makes the page better, but you keep removing the standings. I am just asking why are you removing the standings Subaryan (talk) 15:47, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

Adding an unsourced ranking is WP:OR, please see Talk:2018 FIFA World Cup#Final standings. S.A. Julio (talk) 15:52, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

But I think standings should be added and I want to add them, and maybe you could help me find a source or something to add them. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Subaryan (talkcontribs) 15:57, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

Unused substitutes in 1986 world cup

Hi,

I have made an edit to the knockout stages of the 1986 World cup. Between 1970 and 1990 all the teams were allowed to name a squad of 16 for every world cup match out of the full squad of 22 - 11 in the starting team and 5 substitutes. In the pages 1982 and 1990 for every of the 52 matches are listed the 5 substitutes, including those that were no used during the match. In the 1986 world cup that same piece of information is missing. And I do believe it is important for everyone interested in the career of a particular player at least. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Krivolak (talkcontribs) 07:44, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

@Krivolak: Then the other articles should have the players removed. See 2018 FIFA World Cup knockout stage as an example, only used substitutes should be included for international tournaments. S.A. Julio (talk) 17:29, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

Rules for using the substitute players were changed before the 1994 world cup. From then on all 22, later 23 players were available for every world cup match. Before that - between 1970 and 1990 that was not the case. Your example with the 2018 world cup is completely irrelevant. It is an important piece of historical information if a player was selected for a particular world cup match or not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Krivolak (talkcontribs) 18:48, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

Notice

The file File:UEFA Nations League Finals.svg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-free logo being used in a decorative manner in UEFA Nations League#Format. File:UEFA Nations League.svg is being used for primary identification purposes at the top of the article; so, the non-free use rationale's claim that this file is needed for that purpose is not correct at all. Most major international sports competitions have various rounds, often ending in a final or championship round. The reader doesn't really need to see a non-free logo of the final per WP:FREER for the league's format to be understood. Moreover, there's no specific sourced critical commentary related to the final's logo anywhere in the main article about the league which means the context for non-free use required by WP:NFCC#8 is also not being provided. If this was used for primary identification purposes in a stand-alone article about the final itself, then it's non-free use would likely be justified; however, non-free use can't really be justified that way the file is currently being used in the article about the league. It might be possible to use this in an article about an individual occurrence of the final, but File:2019 UEFA Nations League Finals.svg is being used for that purpose in 2019 UEFA Nations League Finals and there's no way to justify using basically the same non-free file twice in the same article per WP:NFCC#3a.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:16, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Football Association of Finland logo.svg

Thanks for uploading File:Football Association of Finland logo.svg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

Non-free svg files

Hi S.A. Julio. It appears that you have recently (or somewhat recently) been creating svg versions of some national soccer/football team logos as replacements for non-svg versions being used in various team articles. While it's not completely clear whether re-creating a logo in svg format is considered sufficient to create a WP:Derivative work with a new copyright per c:COM:SVG#Copyright, non-free svg logos should generally only use if official svg versions provided by the original copyright holder when the original file being replaced is also non-free as explained in WP:FREER. However, if the original file being replaced is licensed as WP:PD or has been released under a free license (i.e. has been uploaded to Commons), then a non-free svg version of the same file (or basically the same file with minor difference) will never be considered to meet WP:NFCC#1 just because it's an svg version. If you have reason to think that a file uploaded to Commons cannot be kept on Commons, then you can nominate the file for deletion per c:COM:DR; however, it's also a possibility that the Commons file may only need to be re-licensed instead of deleted, which is something that can often be sorted out at c:COM:VPC. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:23, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Valter Poghosyan unprotected

Hi S.A. Julio, and thanks for your message. I've un-protected that page.
For those who might be watching, it appears that latin script w and v transliterations of the Armenian alphabet Վ appears to indicate they are allophones in the Armenian language, so Valter Poghosyan -> Walter Poghosyan is OK.

Request

Hey man, I saw that you've made the image for the formations of the OFC Champions League final. Cheers for that! It makes Wikipedia look more professional to have that sort of thing included on articles.

However, will all praise, there's a request for help (typically, of course!). Would you have the time (or will) to make them for the FFA Cup finals pages? I would, but I have no idea what I'm doing and would end out making it so badly, that the internet would probably catch fire somehow.

Anyway, cheers heaps dude. Appreciate the effort! - J man708 (talk) 11:00, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi, I saw you removed empty categories from this type from the group pages. I restored them saying I'll create them, but then saw it is more work than I have time for rn, so removed again. Seems weird that only about 11 nations have this kind of categories (looking at previous World Cups), while others don't. Is there a reason for that or were they just not created and should be? --SuperJew (talk) 06:38, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

@S.A. Julio: I'm pinging you in case you missed my question. --SuperJew (talk) 11:20, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
@SuperJew: Sorry got lost in a few projects. I think most often the categories were created by editors interested in the relevant country's football. A similar half-filled category can be seen at Category:Countries at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. However for 2018 I created categories for all the countries, so similarly we can create the remaining 13 categories for this tournament. S.A. Julio (talk) 11:38, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
No worries, I wasn't judging and totally understand :) Ok, if I have time I'll work on it. If you do you can :) --SuperJew (talk) 11:54, 23 May 2019 (UTC)
