Revert

[edit]

I noticed you reverted one of my edits on an article. The “One source” tag doesn't mean exactly one. It could be two as well, but I would say if it had 3-8 I would tag it with the “More citations needed” one. Thanks. -Cupper52Discuss! 16:52, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Iraqi rower

[edit]

May I ask you why did you move the initial name of Mohammed Al-Khafaji into Mohammed Riyadh? It appears with Al-Khafaji surname in all official competitions, as here. I know of course that names in Arabic are not easy, but we should stay with the most USUAL names. Thanks for your explanation. --Arorae (talk) 15:23, 11 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Arabic countries have different systems for naming but in Iraq, they use the first and the 2nd name. here is no "family name" only the given name and the father name is being used. for example this famous Iraqi footballer Younis Mahmoud. Mohsen1248 (talk) 17:30, 11 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Nzd. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Reza Alipour, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Nzd (talk) 23:52, 18 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Nzd: this is very interesting, you asked for a source, I provided a source, two actually. but it seems you think you are allowed to remove whatever you don't like. both sources are in his mother language. the 2nd one is an interview with himself with a "reliable" website Mehr News Agency, I'm going to repeat a line from the 3rd paragraph
"بطوری که مهدی علیپور پسرعموی خودم هم در جام جهانی ۲۰۱۵ جوانان صاحب مدال طلا شد"
... Mehdi Alipour, my cousin also won a gold medal in a junior world cup.
That's a source, a very clear one. Mohsen1248 (talk) 00:04, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Mohsen. The edit just came up as a revert and I hadn't seen that you'd changed the sources. It was my mistake and I've struck the above, but you could help people to avoid that mistake by using edit notes. Thanks, Nzd (talk) 00:37, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Oliver Lavigilante

[edit]

Hi, and sorry to ask about an edit from 2012, but was there a reason why you moved Jason Lavigilante to Oliver Lavigilante? Asking only because all the references I can find say Jason. Red Fiona (talk) 22:38, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, that was a decade ago, obviously I can't remember lol. but I just googled and a local website here is calling him Oliver. usually all the references copy/paste things from one source. that's why I usually take local websites (for each person) more seriously. still I can't remember how much I did search for this person but I usually don't move pages until I'm convinced this is the more common name of the person in his own country. Mohsen1248 (talk) 22:54, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I thought that might be pushing it :). I speak enough French to use that reference, just to make sure one of the references uses that name. Thank you for your help :) Red Fiona (talk) 23:05, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Logo of the Russian Wrestling Federation for the 2021 World Championships

[edit]

Listen, man, what's wrong with you? Are you blind or what? Don't you see that logo of the Russian Wrestling Federation for the 2021 World Championships is slighly different from the flag of the Russian Olympic Committee? There is big circle with some pieces inside instead of Olympic rings at the bottom part of logo. As a result of CAS's decision, Russian national sport federations got right to choose own logo for participations at the World Championships in 2021 and 2022. Some federations (like Russian Judo Federation) decided to participate under flag of the Russian Olympic Committee, but many others decided to create own logos for participation at the World Championships. If you want, you can create file with correct logo of the Russian Wrestling Federation and to upload it on Wikimedia for using at Wikipages - instead of using wrong flag.

First watch out your language, there is no place in wikipedia for that. who you think you are exactly? you don't even know how to use someone's talk page properly.
this is the next best flag. very similar to the one they are using in this tournament, there are rules in wikipedia about uploading non-free files and using them multiple times, I'm not sure if uploading and using that new pic is possible but as long as we don't have a replacement I'm going to use the ROC flag which is the only available flag. Mohsen1248 (talk) 12:52, 2 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
So, you know that you are using the wrong flag (in violation of all the rules), but you keep doing it because it looks similar? What kind of logic is it? It's like using the Slovakian flag for Slovenian athletes because these flags also look the same and even the country names are the same. I repeat again - the Russian Olympic Committee and the Russian Wrestling Federation are different organizations and use different logos. Better to spend your efforts on creating and uploading the file with the correct logo instead of persistently using the wrong logo. If this is not possible, the abbreviation RWF is sufficient to identify the team that the wrestler represents, and there is no need for wrong logo.
In addition, as I already wrote - if the Russian Wrestling Federation wanted, they could use flag of the Russian Olympic Committee for participation at the 2021 World Championships. However, they refused from this decision and opted to create their own logo for this purpose (although it looks quite similar). That's why your edits are kind of offensive and disrespectful to the decision of the Russian Wrestling Federation and towards Russian wrestlers who participate in this championships in general.
@Hyperion82: I don't see an apology for that language and without seeing that in the first line of your response, I won't even read the rest. beside that I'm going to upload that new flag, I'm waiting to see which one they are going to use in the medal ceremony so I'm not going to waste my time with you about something temporary. (because after all the wrestling flag will be used either today or next week) of course until that I will continue using the ROC flag whenever I edit those pages. and learn to 'sign your comments when you write something on someone's talk page. Afghan flag at the 2007 Asian Indoor Games

[edit]

Hi there! Thanks for editing the articles about futsal! However, I did revert some of your edits, particularily this one, since the flag of 2013 had not yet been adopted (quite so in 2007!). As I've seen in infoboxes and other places, it is a custom to use the flag of the country that is the official one during the match.Ivario (talk) 01:49, 18 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Ivario: Hi, Yes of course it's a custom to use the official flag at the time of the competition, but the thing is Afghanistan never changed its flag in 2013. that's a mistake in wikipedia (as far as I know unless someone proves me otherwise) we had a long conversation here about it and you can see my sources, they simply didn't standardize their flag, I believe the same flag (no matter which version really) should be used for the whole period of time from 2004 to 2021. Iran handball squad

[edit]

Hey, hope you are well and can help me once again. Do you have any squad list of the women's team for the upcoming WC? I looked at their instagram page but did not found it. Kante4 (talk) 14:04, 21 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Kante4: Hi, I found their wide list of 27 players here, it's just a list of names without anything else (clubs, date of birth etc) I may find some of their clubs though. if that's helpful I can write all those names in English. that was for the preliminary camp which was ended couple days ago, so I assume they will announce a shorter list soon. but here are the names and keep in mind I transliterate the names in the most accurate way, but there is no standard way for transliterating the names here, so you may see different things (sometimes very wrong) when the official squad appears on IHF website.
Fatemeh Khalili, Zeinab Bazrafkan, Arezoo Mohammadi, Hanieh Lak, Hadiseh Norouzi, Bahar Izadgashb, Arezoo Kianara, Maryam Yousefi, Hedieh Veisi, Mojgan Ghahramani, Sona Bidad, Mobina Hassannejad, Mehraban Badvi, Mina Vatanparast, Shima Zare, Setareh Rahmanian, Shaghayegh Bapiri, Hanieh Karimi, Negar Zendehboudi, Nourieh Abbasi, Sanaz Rajabi, Atieh Shahsavari, Elnaz Ghasemi, Mahshad Taheri, Parisa Anbarestani, Asma Emami, Niusha Moradbakhsh. Kim Jong-man

[edit]

Hey, I just saw your edit on Kim Jong-man (footballer, born 1958) (moving from "born unknown" to "born 1958"). I can see that the reference you've left is for the national-football-teams.com profile of Kim Yong-nam (footballer). There is a very good chance that this is the same person, as the timelines match up (debut in 1980 at 22, prolific goal-scorer in the early 80s, last game in 1990 at 32), so I think the pages should be merged. The question is: do we keep the name as Kim Jong-man or Kim Yong-nam, or perhaps even a different variation of the name? I got the Hangul translation of the name from the Korean Wiki's article on the 1982 Asian Games here. Hope you can help. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 13:10, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Davidlofgren1996: Hi, and thanks for being careful. I might did a mistake. still not sure though. I have a link for North Korean rosters in main football competitions here I will check it later to see if it was the same person (with just different transliteration) or someone else. Sports2021 (talk)

Hi, Sports2021. By [2], Kim Jong-man was 28 years old in 1990. So it is estimated that his birth year is 1962 or 1961. I conjecture that [Kim Jong-man (footballer, born unknown)] is different from Kim Yong-nam (footballer) and [Kim Jong-man (footballer, born unknown)] is Kim Jong-man who was 28 years old in 1990. Sawol (talk) 15:45, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sawol: Thank you for clearing this up, that's a really helpful source - I've added the heights of all players in that article to their respective Wikipedia articles, except a handful I couldn't find any information on (정영만, 방광철 and 성국훈). Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 16:29, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Should it be Kim Jong-man (footballer, born 1960s) instead of born unknown? and since I'm a bit confused here, this guy onlu participated at the 1990 Asian Games ? or 1982 too? Sports2021 (talk) 16:34, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I support moving the page to Kim Jong-man (footballer, born 1960s) if that's in line with Wiki guidelines. Also, for clarification:
- Kim Yong-nam (footballer) - born 1958, played for North Korea from 1980 until 1990, played only in the 1990 Asian games.
- Kim Jong-man (footballer, born unknown) - born 1961/62, played for North Korea from 1980 until 1986, played at the 1980 AFC Asian Cup and 1982 Asian Games, but not at the 1990 Asian Games
- Kim Jong-man (footballer, born 1972) - played for North Korea at youth international level, went on to represent the senior side at least twice in 1993. Did not play at any Asian Games or AFC Asian Cup. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 18:06, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Davidlofgren1996: I don't think there is anything in wikipedia against that move. at least that's much better than using the word unknown. just to make sure there is no mistake. you are saying that the younger guy (Kim JM from 1961/1962) made the NT for the major events earlier than the older guy Kim YN (born 1958) ? not saying that's not possible. of course it is, just want to make sure. actually based on what you said they don't even share the same name, so everything is clear now. Sports2021 (talk) 21:49, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, records from the 1970s and early 80s are somewhat difficult to come across, but the earlier appearance I can find for both of them is the 3–0 win over Macao in December 1980 (source - not sure on reliability as it doesn't give the "correct" goal scorers, but I can't find any better source, as 11v11 doesn't even recognise Kim YN). Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 22:20, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Davidlofgren1996: Sorry but once again I'm confused with the names, OK Kim Yong-nam (footballer) is a different player who played at the 1990 Asian Games. but based on this link we have two players with very similar names. 김정만 is listed for 1990 and 김정만 is listed for 1982 (and also 1980 Asian Cup). so who is who ? which one is Kim Jong-man (footballer, born unknown) Sports2021 (talk) 00:07, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The source supports what I've compiled on each article - 김정만 is Kim Yong-nam (footballer), who appeared in five games at the 1990 Asian Games, without scoring. 김종만 is Kim Jong-man (footballer, born unknown), who appeared at the 1980 AFC Asian Cup, scoring against Bangladesh, and at the 1982 Asian Games, where he scored three goals. Hope this clears it up! Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 03:14, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Davidlofgren1996: still a problem here. look at the Korean rosters at the 1990 AG
김치원 김충 (GK) 김광민 오영남 김경일 정영만 김정만 한형일 윤철 윤정수 김윤철 리정만 탁영빈 김영남 조인철 최영선 류성근 방광철 김종성 김풍일
those two names in bold, Kim Yong-nam (footballer) is the 2nd one. there is still one other player named 김정만 which I believe should be transliterated as Kim Jong-man or Kim Jeong-man. that probably means one of those Kim JM players was a part of 1990 AG squad alongside Kim Yong-nam. Sports2021 (talk) 03:58, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
According to the Football at the 1990 Asian Games article, it is Kim Jong-man (footballer, born unknown) (listed under medallists). It may be that this is the case, or it may be another completely separate player. It could even be Kim Jong-man (footballer, born 1972), as he would've been 18 at the time. Whoever it was, they didn't feature in any games - I've gone through each match on national-football-teams.com (which has this competition fairly comprehensively covered) and could not find any instance of a Kim Jong-man or Kim Jeong-man. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 04:11, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think that 김정만 and 김종만 of [3] are the same. When North Korean Kim Jong-man is translated from English into Korean, 'o' is available in two ways. Kim Jong-un was known as 김종운 at the early days of his administration. North Korea don't use 'eo' for 'ㅓ'. Kim Yong-nam may be 김영남 or 김용남. Sawol (talk) 04:18, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Sawol: So, if North Korea don't use 'ㅓ' for 'eo', the translation for Kim Jong-man should be 김종만, and the translation for Kim Yong-nam should be 김용남? Just want to confirm, as we can then change them on each article. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 04:35, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
is this article about a unified team for Korea including Kim Jong-man (footballer, born unknown) ? this is from 1990 and if this guy is a part of this unified team that probably means he is the same person who played at the 1990 Asian Games. so Yes I also think it was the same person for both 1982 and 1990 AG. are we good about moving it to Kim Jong-man (footballer, born 1960s) too ? I would suggest moving it to Kim Jong-man (footballer, born 1962) but based on the dates there is a slim chance he might be from 1961. Sports2021 (talk) 04:41, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Both 김정만 and 김종만 are translated into English Kim Jong-man. We should find whether 김정만 or 김종만. 김정만 of [4] is likely to be [Kim Jong-man (footballer, born unknown)]. I think that [Kim Jong-man (footballer, born unknown)] played at the 1990 Asian Games. I agree that [Kim Jong-man (footballer, born unknown)] move to [Kim Jong-man (footballer, born 1960s)] or [Kim Jong-man (footballer, born 1962)]. Sawol (talk) 04:49, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I believe This article is referring to the two friendlies played between the North and South Korea football teams in 1990, using open-age players - the Kim Jong-man in this link is Kim Jong-man (footballer, born unknown), yes. Not to be confused with the unified Korea team who competed at the 1991 FIFA World Youth Championship, and was under-20.
I am in support of the move to either page, but I have a preference for "footballer, born 1960s" just because of that slim chance that he was born in 1961. Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 04:58, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
So we are all agreed that it should be moved to Kim Jong-man (footballer, born 1960s) and he is the same person who played for the PRK senior NT at 1980 AC, 1982 AG and 1990 AG? in this case someone should make the move. Sports2021 (talk) 05:09, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I done. Could you apply a speedy deletion request to a page [Ri Hyok-chol (footballer, born unknown)] under WP:G7? Sawol (talk) 05:33, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Sawol: Looks like the article was already deleted when you moved it. Thanks for all your help with this! Davidlofgren1996 (talk) 06:40, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello and good time, I wanted to ask about the status of some pages that have been marked for quick removal due to Mohammad Hossein Sharifzadeh's page, and I request that the labels be removed and instead offer suggestions about the article, and I hope that the pages that have been wrongly labeled Their labels should be removed. Thanks A2004bb (talk) 06:09, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, if you think those pages should stay (which I disagree) you should write your reasons in the discussion page, not here. I tried to help and improve some of them but you still keep creating very poor-written articles. you don't even pay attention to how to put a picture in the page. you are using at least 3 accounts which is against wikipedia rules (that's sockpuppetry and if you continue doing that, you will get banned) you remove deletion tags from the articles repeatedly which is also against the rules. my advise is learn the rules/guidelines first and please don't create articles about the entire Iranian shooting squad. most of them are not notable enough. İvan Tixonov

[edit]

Are you aware that you are starting an editwar without any discussion ? regards Arorae (talk) 01:28, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I was about to write this message on your talkpage. so I'm going to copy/paste it here.
Hi, I know you have a thing for moving pages, sometimes you have a good point, sometimes you don't. as far as I know in English wikipedia all of Azerbaijani people are listed in English, not in Azeri (unlike Turkish names) and this guy is not even Azerbaijani and I don't think there is enough English sources to back this move. Sports2021 (talk) 01:30, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Arorae: And about the Thai pole vaulter, both names are accurate, Thai names are complicated, but I would prefer Patsapong Amsamang simply because he uses this one on his own instagram but even if this should be kept as a two part name. it should be Patsapong Amsam-ang not Patsapong Amsam-Ang. that's the guidline for Thai names (can't find the guideline though) like this Piyapong Pue-on (and there are lots of examples) even Thai sources usually just remove that dash (-) and write the name in one part. Sports2021 (talk) 01:40, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
dear Sports2021, İvan Tixonov represents Azerbaijan since 2018, sorry that you are not aware of that. You have only to follow guidelines and sources [5] and I can assure you that Azeri names are quite common in a lot of sports even if the Russian way to write Azeri is used. Never forget that his original name is Тихонов Иван, not its English translitteration Tikhonov. About Thai names, as I am not a specialist of Thai language, I have just followed World Athletics. You may be right on the capitalisation (Amsan-ang) because unfortunately WA writes the family names in all-capitals, but for source Instagram or Facebook are not the source to rely on. Find the guidelines for Thai language and we will find a shared solution.--Arorae (talk) 01:50, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, your comment: "I know you have a thing for moving pages" could be seen as a Personal Attack.--Arorae (talk) 01:52, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And also, you strangely said that there are absolutely no Azeri names in English Wikipedia, in fact you can find dozens (and more) of sportspeople with an Azeri writing as i.e. Teymur Qasımov, or Dadaş İbrahimov, on articles where I have never contributed and that were created by Lugnuts, one of the main contributors.--Arorae (talk) 02:02, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Really?, Don't be nice to me, go and report it. I'm here waiting for that, not going anywhere.
we can try asking for a 3rd opinion, (I really hate wikipedia's long processes and usually avoid them though) Yes instagram is not a real source but this is his own instagram I'm sure he knows how to write his own name better than anybody else.
and since now you care about following guidelines, I don't think any guideline in wikipedia support moving Ivan Tikhonov's name. I asked a simple question. will you move Ilham Aliyev's page to İlham Əliyev? I don't think so. this is the same. probably even less logical since the guy isn't even Azerbaijani. it doesn't matter when he switched country, I didn't argue about that at all. (and while there are probably dozen articles in Azeri names there are thousands and probably more in none-Azeri, only those created strictly from sports-referecnce uses the Azeri names) Sports2021 (talk) 02:05, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
there is nothing either in Thai guidelines Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Thailand-related articles about how writing Thai names.
your further aggressive comment: "and since now you care about following guidelines" is another Personal Attack. Please, stop judging people and the fact that you are "not going anywhere" doesn't matter to me. My only matter is to improve articles as probably you too. But when I see that you do not like at all ("hate" as you say) Wikipedia discussions, I am aware that some calm and friendly discussion may be quite uneasy. Sorry for that.--Arorae (talk) 02:16, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
On your opinion ("I'm sure he knows how to write his own name better than anybody else"), I can affirm you that the Manual of Style is quite contrary to this humble and common opinion, as the way which people writes their names doesn't change the Common Name as it is used on sources. There are multiple examples on that.--Arorae (talk) 02:20, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
oh come on, you would report me if you knew you have enough reason. and don't do that please, don't put words in my mouth, I hate those lengthy process simply because it wastes lots of my time and I'm not fluent in English (my English is OK but still not fluent to write long messages quickly, as quick as English speaking users) it's not like I'm against the rules. even this simple discussion is wasting something like 1 hour of my time (and your time). and since you probably think I'm a new user, I'm not, I just changed my username. I ran through your moves before (lots of them probably against wikipedia guidelines) what I care about is consistency. if all Azerbaijani names in wikipedia were written in this language, I was totally OK with that, same as Turkish names, Mongolian names, Serbian names etc. but this is not the case here. only those created with only sports-referecnce (now Olympedia) as the single source are written in Azerbaijani language. and if you check Thai names here (politicians, sportspeople etc) you can see in most of them the surname is just in one part (they simply prefer it this way) and even in those with two parts, the second part is not capitalized. (there are always some exceptions about articles being created by non-Thai users) but seriously I highly doubt you do this, to check other articles as an example. you already made your mind. am I right? you think this is personal and you want to win the argument but that's not correct, I just care about consistency. Sports2021 (talk) 02:30, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
English is not my native language too.
@Paul 012:: he found the right solution for Amsang-an, and with his solution, I totally agree (because I do the same in Korean, a language that I can read).--Arorae (talk) 02:39, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You have just written again "seriously I highly doubt you do this, to check other articles as an example. you already made your mind. am I right?": you are completely wrong as I rely only on good sources and I have not the strange spirit you think I could have. You can doubt, it is your personal opinion, but I can also doubt also to see such acrinomy towards my contributions, because I just like you care only about consistency. The fact that you have changed your User name, let me think that you want to hide your previous one. I don't trust a lot people with red personal pages.--Arorae (talk) 02:45, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Then you should know it takes time to write long messages in another language, that's why I don't like to start those lengthy discussions.
That's OK, Amsam-ang and Amsamang are equally good to me, they are both correct.
And now you are talking about my personal things, but that's OK I can answer that "accusation" (if we can call it) when I created my account more than a decade ago I used my real name as the username (at the time I didn't know it matters) and recently I had problems with the biggest sockpuppet in wikipedia who vandalized my pages A LOT with hundreds of accounts, and he also tried to find me in real life to create more problems, I simply preferred to not use my real name anymore to avoid such crazy people. I think that's clear now. and who cares, you don't have to trust me. Sports2021 (talk) 02:50, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Strangely, you are quite an old user, not exactly what you said above (2007, I have started 3 years before you, only), but I also had a look at your block log, and it is not an accusation. Just facts. I had just not well understood your change of Name User, nothing personal and thanks for the explanation. Personally I have also changed my User name, so.--Arorae (talk) 02:57, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
We already friendly discussed with an old user name [....] So I am suppose that you are the same person. Thanks again for this long discussion.--Arorae (talk) 03:01, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What I said above exactly ? I don't know what do you mean. good job looking at my block log. yeah it happened that I forgot to count 3RR. but that was 10 years ago. and yes that was my username. I edited your comment for the reason I explained before. it's not hard to find my old username for someone who is familiar with wikipedia but the guy(s) I'm avoiding is not that smart to know these things. (I just checked and that problem with the sockpuppet happened in 2017, I thought that was couple years ago, time flies quickly) Sports2021 (talk) 03:08, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • But you cannot hide what you have already done:

Mazen Al-Yassin ?

[edit]

Mazen Al-Yassin (Redirected from Mazen Mawtan Al-Yasen) was an edit that you have recently corrected the link. Thanks for that. World Athletics prefers now Al-Yasen, but also used Al-Yassin. I know that in Arabic it is the same to write Yassin or Yazen and you speak Arabic (and Persian). I don’t any any preferences but the Guidelines and the Sources. should we follow WA ? Arorae (talk) 23:13, 10 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I don't speak Arabic but I can read (a bit similar to Persian, at least in writing/reading). that's the problem, there is no guideline in transliterating Arabic names. personally I try to correct names while respecting most common English transliteration as much as possible. his name is مازن الياسين in Arabic, I believe Yassin is more accurate than Yasen. (if he was Persian I would write Yasin) but in general there is no correct answer here. they are all correct somehow. Arabic names are really complicated it's different country by country, for example in Iraq they always call a person only by his first two parts of the names, in UAE, Bahrain and Qatar they don't have surnames the way you see in western countries. Sports2021 (talk) 03:06, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry as you already changed many Arabic names in the past, especially from Iraq, I thought you was fluent in Arabic and not only in Persian. "You see in Western countries"? I am not a Westener and even in Europe, some family names are not so regular (Icelandic, Hungarian, Iberic) and obey to special and weird rules. My own son bears not my family surname but by my first name, and my grandson named after me has the false "surname" of my son: Kiribati people doesn't have real surnames (but some Europeans living there). By the way, I thank you very much for this reply (I support your conclusion).--Arorae (talk) 22:34, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I'm not fluent in Arabic but I understand it and I can read it perfectly which is good enough to understand their naming system. I mean when I see an athlete with long and complicated name (I mean those with 3, 4 or 5 parts) I try to check sources in Arabic (sources in his own country because as I said Arabic countries have different system of naming) to find how he is known in his own language. Persian/Iranian names are also complicated for non-Iranian people sometimes, while we follow the simple givenname + surname system but surnames are unnecessarily long sometimes (and nobody never uses the 2nd part) Sports2021 (talk) 22:57, 11 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yaqoob

[edit]

Yaqoob Salem Eid as per source ? which one ? WA says Yaqoob as family name. Arorae (talk) 15:13, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Arorae: They usually don't have family names in Bahrain, that's for sure. it's usually givenname + father's name + grandfather's name + ... I was very busy today, let me double check this one with Arabic sources tomorrow. Sports2021 (talk) 21:42, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
thanks but I already know that. Only that World Athletics is giving another order of names.--Arorae (talk) 21:56, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Arorae: I did some searches and all Bahraini sources are calling him Yaqoob Salem (يعقوب سالم) that's the more common way to call his name in his own country, but some sources also call him Yaqoob Salem Yagoob. looks like there are two "Yaqoob"s in his name. but one thing is for sure, his own givenname is Yagoob that probably confused guys in WA database and they removed the first Yagoob. I even checked different sources from different time to make sure they are not simply copy/pasting each other.
This is from Bahrain Athletics federation few days ago about his new medals in Islamic Solidarity Games, they call him Yaqoob Salem Yaqoob
this is a news website back in 2016 talking about him qualifying for the Olympics. they call him simply Yaqoob Salem
he was rarely called Yaqoob Salem Eid too but considering all things I checked I think it should be Yaqoob Salem or Yaqoob Salem Yaqoob and I somehow think Yaqoob Salem Yaqoob is better to avoid confusion. Sports2021 (talk) 14:53, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much, please consider that the statisticians that are working in the World Athletics database always do an excellent job and I collaborate with them and visit them as WA is at only 7km from home. Since I work with them, I have seen only very very few errors (less than 0.1%) and they don't use the common name or nick name or the more usual, but the official passport name. Translated into Latin alphabet. but your argument sounds good and if you agree, I will rename him Yaqoob Salem Yaqoob. Thanks again.--Arorae (talk) 19:25, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest Yaqoob Salem but since this is English wikipedia, I also think Yaqoob Salem Yaqoob is better to avoid confusion. they are both correct after all. (that's the problem with Arabic names, you have more than 1 correct answer) but I think you are wrong about WA databse, yes I agree they are much better than other federations but still mistakes happen. for example look at this, Farzaneh Fasihi is a well known athlete, even an Olympian but they write her name in a wrong order, my point is while official names on international federation websites are always the primary source but I always double check it with local sources. you never can trust them to be 100% accurate. mistakes happen and I believe they are much more than 0.1%. Sports2021 (talk) 19:48, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
they are much better than 99% other federations, thats for sure. They can mistake of course, but I am working with them since 1983, and I have noticed very few mistakes, but of course I don't speak Persian, Dari or Arabic, only French, Italian, German, Ukrainian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish (but my native language is the Gilbertese). You are also right on one point, there is never an unique answer [6].--Arorae (talk) 19:55, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think I prefer IJF (Judo), they apprently check all the names with the athlete himself to write the more correct name in their database. and usually remove the unnecessary parts from long names. WA is good too. most other federations simply write the passport names and other website copy/paste from it. looks like this Yagoob guy born somewhere else is a naturalized athlete. that answers the confusion. when they naturalize an athlete they just give him a fake name. sometimes don't write it properly on the passport. Hi, I'm not sure if this is a FIFA A international match, considering both teams have lots of substitutions. Please, do not change his name to Batyr Hojamuhammedow. He is named Batyr Hojamuhammedov by both IJF and JudoInside. There is no reason why the same athlete would be named in two different spellings in Wikipedia. CLalgo (talk) 14:05, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@CLalgo: Sorry who are you again to revert my whole edit just because you disagree with one part of it? and wikipedia doesn't follow necessarily exactly the English official writing system. otherwise for example Selim Tataroğlu should be Selim Tataroglu without "ğ", there are lots of examples like this about other countries. (like "ć" and "c" for Balkan countries). Turkmenistani names are mostly written in their own format. (they use W instead of V) for example if we take Turkmenistan former president as the most famous person his name is Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow while most English sources write his name as Berdimuhamedov (with V and not W). Mohammad Siavoshi, Ali Rahimi, Omid Reza Sarpoushi, Mojtaba Heidarpour, Alireza Mousavi, Pouya Norouzinejad, Mohammad Reza Kazemi, Ali Shayesteh, Milad Ghalandari, Ali Shirani, Mohammad Kiani, Yasin Kabirianjoo, Salaman Barbat, Ali Kouhzad, Reza Yadegari, Afshin Sadeghi, Mehdi Mousavi, Mohammad Reza Oraei, Saber Heidari, Vahid Masoudi, Mehrdad Samsami, Mohammad Mehdi Behnamnia, Kiarash Taheri and Shahab Sadeghzadeh. Thanks already. Kante4 (talk) 15:53, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kante4: and it seems Bahrain announced a 19-man team today source, since Arabic names is a bit too much complicated I check it with their official list and write the number wherever the English name is different than Bahraini sources.
Ali Merza #78, Jasim Al-Salatna, Mohamed Merza #19, Mohamed Abdulhusain #21, Husain Al-Sayyad, Ahmed Jalal #18, Komail Mahfoodh, Mohamed Ali (not sure who is this guy, lots of Mohamed in their squad), Hasan Al-Samahiji, Ali Abdulla Eid, Qasim Qambar, Mahmood Husain #90, Abdulla Al-Zaimoor, Hasan Merza #8, Mohamed Habib #95, Muntadher Ebrahim #1, Hesham Ahmed #12, Abdulla Ali #11, Mujtaba Al-Zaimoor. Sports2021 (talk) 16:02, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome. I checked their instagram earlier but too early it seems. -.- Kante4 (talk) 16:06, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Happy new year. For Saudi Arabia, their website is pretty good and new, so i have the list from them (was surprised). If you have any update for Iran at some point (ten days to go), you can ping me if you want, or edit the page. ;) Kante4 (talk) 11:21, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Mohammad Hossain

[edit]

Hello, Sports2021,

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Joseywales1961, and I thank you for your contributions.

I wanted to let you know, however, that I have tagged Mohammad Hossain for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. You may find our guide for writing quality articles to be extremely informative. Also, you may want to consider working on future articles in draft space first, where they cannot be deleted for lacking content.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top. If the page is already deleted by the time you come across this message and you wish to retrieve the deleted material, please contact the deleting administrator.

For any further query, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Joseywales1961}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

A tag has been placed on Category:FIVB Volleyball World Championship qualification indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". Would you please help me out with this

[edit]

Hi @Sports2021 got and reference from a friend of yours would you please help me out with Draft:Ankit Kumar Pandey or please write an article accordingly wikipedia guidelines. The haul (talk) 20:31, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I don't think I can help here. The article itself looks good enough. but the problem is lack of notability. improving the article won't solve that problem. you have to prove he is notable enough and from my understand it will be hard. Sports2021 (talk) 23:26, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, got it what exactly are you trying to say but why lots of articles accepted even its only 4 references. The haul (talk) 23:36, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Having lots of refs is great but notability is not necessarily related to that. Sports2021 (talk) 19:42, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reporting errors

[edit]

Regarding this correction on the 1992 Olympic wrestling results - this keeps getting reverted as the main sources are still incorrect.

Wherever you find an error, I recommend going to Olympedia and checking the detail there (see here for example). You can report errors via the feedback page and share the correct results and reference, so this will help avoid needless reversions in future because the most prominent sources will be right :) Thanks! SFB 22:40, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I never consider Olympedia as the main source. the main source is only the official report and they left that specific match empty. of course anybody with a bit knowledge about wrestling knows 10-6 for the American wrestler is wrong. because with that result he would advance to the bronze medal match (which he didn't) Sports2021 (talk) 15:35, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

2018 Asian Games Taekwondo Poomsae pictogram

[edit]

Why did you move Taekwondo Poomsae pictogram out of infobox [7], then remove it [8]? Please use edit summary for this kind of edit. Hddty (talk) 04:17, 23 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Simply because I think one pictogram is enough, Poomsae is a subdivision of Taekwondo, not a separate discipline. Sports2021 (talk) 23:46, 6 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This name is unsourced. Xx236 (talk) 12:18, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

2001 Asian Kabaddi Championship

[edit]

You got any information regarding who were the runner-ups in this tournament? TabahiKaBhagwan (talk) 06:04, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, no unfortunately, I really spent some time and searched in different languages but found nothing.Sports2021 (talk) 12:22, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Can we be certain that the tournament even happened? TabahiKaBhagwan (talk) 20:00, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not certain, I did research about it long time ago, I can't remember what I found to be honest but I think I found enough to believe the tournament really happened, otherwise I would removed it from the list. still I'm not certain at all. Sports2021 (talk) 20:07, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello. I have noticed that you often edit without using an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This helps your fellow editors use their time more productively, rather than spending it unnecessarily scrutinizing and verifying your work. Even a short summary is better than no summary, and summaries are particularly important for large, complex, or potentially controversial edits. To help yourself remember, you may wish to check the "prompt me when entering a blank edit summary" box in your preferences. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 01:35, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Sports2021,
Please include edit summaries with your edits, especially when you are moving a page. If you leave an explanation why you are moving an article, your move is much less likely to be reverted. Please do this in the future. Many thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 01:37, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Please do not use misleading edit summaries when making changes to Wikipedia pages, as you did to West Asian Games. This behavior is viewed as disruptive, and continuation may result in loss of editing privileges. Thank you. - Sumanuil. (talk to me) 21:26, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Sumanuil: WHAT!? maybe you should check the edit more carefully before warning someone. Sports2021 (talk) 22:34, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your edit summary was "rv vandalism". Vandalism has a specific definition here, and it's not "an edit I disagree with". - Sumanuil. (talk to me)
@Sumanuil: Again, you didn't even bother to check the edits. that IP user is adding phantom information in wikipedia, he was banned for a week once and now he is back doing the same. (I will report him if he does that once again) adding phantom information is vandalism, that's Hoaxing vandalism. there is no West Asian Games scheduled for either 2024 or 2025. and Camel racing will never be a part of any multi-sport event. Sports2021 (talk) 22:50, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, then. Just explain it better next time. - Sumanuil. (talk to me) 00:04, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I made a mistake was the correct reply. Sports2021 (talk) 02:09, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Sports 2021, how you doing? I saw your contributions on 2023 World Wrestling Championships and decided to ask for your help.

I'm working on this article for the upcoming Olympic Trials for wrestling, but I'm having an issue with the brackets at 65 and 86 kilograms.

At these weight classes, 2023 World champion at 70 kilos (non-olympic weight) Zain Retherford (65 kg) and 2023 World bronze medalist at 92 kilos (non-olympic weight) Zahid Valencia (86 kg) will sit in the semifinals of their respective brackets, which would look something like this and like this.

I'm having trouble replicating this into 65 kilos and 86 kilos in the draft I'm working on. Do you happen to know a way to help replicate this into Wikipedia format? Thank you! Tomascr7 (talk) 22:33, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Tomascr7: Hi, I'm fine thanks, I did something but I wonder if you want me to edit that page or just show the result here ? with your permission I'm going to edit the draft and also I removed the flags, they are all from the same nation, that's unnecessary for a national competition. I also merged the best of 3 final right into this. let me know if you dislike any of my changes or you like another format. Sports2021 (talk) 23:17, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And if you want a separate table for the best-of-3 final. you can try |maxround=4 and disappear the last column. Sports2021 (talk) 23:22, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sports2021: Hey, that's good I'm glad. That's great, exactly what I was looking for, you're free to edit the draft as much as you want. Removing the flags is fine, I think it looks a little dull with only the names there so I might do seeds or wrestling clubs they represent right next to their names. About the best-of-three finals, they way you did it is way better than mine. Thank you for your help, if there's any help you need in the future with articles about wrestlers, or UWW/USA Wrestling events, I'll be glad to help. Tomascr7 (talk) 00:14, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are welcome, let me know if any other change is needed, I'm getting familiar with these templates. and thanks I also follow US wrestling news closely. Sports2021 (talk) 00:57, 15 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

List of Asian Games medalists in cycling

[edit]

hi @Sports2021 i would like to ask for your sources in the asian games medal lists particularly the men's and women's track category. i would like to cite them for my research/thesis. thanks alot! Robvadler (talk) 05:41, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Robvadler: Hi, it took a lot of time to gather those information but mostly that came from 2014 Asian Games official website and before that 2006 AG official website. those websites are down now but I saved whatever necessary. I also checked each year one by one with different sources. mostly with old newspapers. Sports2021 (talk) 09:15, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
