Non-trivial changes should be discussed in advance
@Joeyline, Primefac, Raymarcbadz, Sportsfan 1234, and VEO15:
The module is transcluded in 34,664 pages and even minor edit wars are inappropriate when changes have such an impact. Editing the module should be done with care and any disagreements should be discussed on the talk page. I recommend using Template talk:Country alias as it is the template that appears in articles and it is conventional for discussions about changes affecting the template to occur on its talk. The module talk page is usually either a redirect to the template talk, or is for discussion about technical issues regarding the module (that is, how the code works, not whether some data should be "Ivory Coast" or "Côte d'Ivoire").
By the way Primefac, it is time to remove the TODO note at the top. You may like to also keep or remove the EXA and EXX examples: whatever you think. Johnuniq (talk) 01:27, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
- Yes exactly, which is why I reverted back to the original as there was no discussion. I alternatively started a discussion on Raymarcbadz's talk page regarding CIV and TLS. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 01:29, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
- This edit and edit summary was good. Or not? --Joeyline (talk) 01:38, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Johnuniq, I've removed EXX, but EXA is used at {{infobox country at games}} (and, ostensibly, anywhere else where you'd want an example flag). I've also reworded the top comments so that it's less of a "To do" and more of a "here's a note about those duplicate entries". This is mainly so if (for example) South Africa's entry needed an update, it would clear that both codes would need to be updated.
- As for the proper place to have a discussion, I suggest a soft redirect to Template talk:Country alias as mentioned; this way it's clear that the template is the main place for most discussions, but will not preclude discussions like this that should really be taking place on the module talk. Sound good?
- Joeyline - I agree that's an acceptable change since the new flag was approved in Jan 2004. However, I think that all future changes should be discussed first per the above discussion. Primefac (talk) 01:41, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
- I've requested page protection as a highly visible module, so the instances of drive-by changes should decrease. Primefac (talk) 01:42, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
- This edit and edit summary was good. Or not? --Joeyline (talk) 01:38, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

Been doing some redirect research, and I have the possible solution. I agree with Johnuniq about the location of various discussions, so I'll split/copy this discussion to Template talk:Country alias and turn Module talk:Country alias into a redirect (leaving all of the other discussions in place). This allows for template-related discussions to happen at the template, and module/code-related discussions to happen at the module. Sound good? Primefac (talk) 02:23, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
- Good, thanks. Johnuniq (talk) 02:30, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

Hello! Can you right the Belarusian country alias module because that the flag for 2012 is there. They also had a flag until 1995 previously
- Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format. Could you provide the exact flag for the country that needs adding, and which year(s) it was used? Primefac (talk) 17:56, 25 February 2017 (UTC)
Hello! This is a message from me. Can you add the right flag alias for Belarus. I see that they only have the flag until 2012. They used the Pahonian flag in the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer. That country alias is missed in the module. --88.90.217.227 (talk) 11:55, 25 February 2017 (UTC)
- Please respond to the question above. The country is Belarus? What is the exact flag needed? For what years? Johnuniq (talk) 00:21, 26 February 2017 (UTC)
PHI flag change request
Hi, I think there is a little mistake for Philippines flag here. right now this is what we see for the country at the 1986 Asian Games Philippines but per Flag of the Philippines they changed their flag in February 1986 while the Asian Games were held much later on September. they used the "navy blue" flag for most of 1986 year including the Asian Games. they used that "light blue" flag from February 1985 to February 1986. Exactly the same goes to their 1998 flag, they used the old flag since February 1998 and the Asian Games were held in December 1998. maybe this is the better way to have it (I changed the year a bit)
- name = "Philippines",
- {1936, "Flag of the Philippines (1919-1936).svg"},
- {1984, "Flag of the Philippines (navy blue).svg"},
- {1985, "Flag_of_the_Philippines_(light_blue).svg"},
- {1997, "Flag of the Philippines (navy blue).svg"},
I think there are probably more situations like this, I will try to find if there is still any. Mohsen1248 (talk) 03:46, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
- Mohsen1248, from the table it says the current flag wasn't adopted until July 1986. I have no problem adding an exception for the Asian Games to shift it forward to navy blue, but as the light blue flag was used for the majority of 1986 I'm disinclined to change the entire year. Your comment about the 1984 flag is accurate, so I'll update that once we figure out the 1986 thing. Primefac (talk) 12:12, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
- As far as I know Asian Games was the only event in that year of 1986. It doesn't matter to change the whole year or make an exception for the AG as long as the outcome is the same. btw I also had a comment on 1998 flag, consider that when you are making the changes. Mohsen1248 (talk) 13:04, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
- Done. Thanks! Primefac (talk) 14:29, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for the change, Unfortunately I just found few more cases, this time for Afghanistan per Flag of Afghanistan, they changed their flag on January 2004 which means they didn't use the old flag for the 2004 Summer Olympics.
- Another case is for Bahrain, while they changed their flag on February 2002, that flag is used for the entire 2002 year including the only event for Bahrain in this year, the Asian Games in October.
- Another one for Burma (BIR), they changed the country's name on 1989. while they used their flag once on 1974. which means we are still using the old pre-74 flag for those years between 1974 to 1989. and to be accurate they also changed their flag on January 1974 which means they used the post-74 flag for the entire 1974 year. I think something like that will be good.
- name = "Burma",
- {1973, "Flag of Burma (1948-1974).svg"},
- "Flag of Myanmar (1974-2010).svg",
- And for Ceylon (CEY) they changed the flag on 22 May 1972, while the 1972 Summer Olympics were held on August. so we should have another small change here. Thanks in advance. Mohsen1248 (talk) 23:34, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads up, I'll take a look at these soon. Primefac (talk) 00:27, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
- Done - I dropped the date for CEY down to 1971, but if there are any exceptions (i.e. usage in Jan-May 1972) I'll switch it back and add an exception for the 1972 Summer Olympics. I made BIR match MYA (no reason not to I guess). Primefac (talk) 12:17, 22 March 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks and I hope you don't mind if I find more in next few days. btw I see you also added 2013 flag for Afghanistan but as far as I can this one is not confirmed and you can't see that in Template:Country data Afghanistan and also as far as I checked not confirmed by sources outside of wikipedia. Mohsen1248 (talk) 16:22, 22 March 2017 (UTC)
- Yeah, feel free to update here if there are other things that are off. As for AFG, it was on Flag of Afghanistan so I put it in. If it really never existed (or was used) I'll be happy to remove it. Primefac (talk) 16:28, 22 March 2017 (UTC)
- I'm reviewing the article and there is no source for that change, I mean all refs for the article don't mention a change after 2004. beside that I always consider Template:Country data XXX as my references for the flags. Mohsen1248 (talk) 17:06, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

Few more change requests
Hi again, I checked few more countries and found this list.
- Iran, unfortunately I could not find when they exactly changed the flag on 1964 but based on pictures of 1964 Olympic reports, they used the 1964 version for 1964 Summer Olympics on October. but i have no idea about 1964 Winter Games in February. so you should probably make an exception for 1964 Summer Olympics.
- Iraq, back in 2004, thy changed their flag on June 2004 while the 2004 Olympics were held later the year. again in 2008, they changed the flag very early in January, they used the current flag for the entire 2008 including the Olympics.
- Mongolia, they started using their current flag from February 1992 during the winter olympics and months before the Summer Olympics, I assume you should change it to the current version only for the 1992 Summer Games. Mohsen1248 (talk) 21:45, 20 April 2017 (UTC)
- I'll take a look, hopefully get to this in the next day or two. Primefac (talk) 02:15, 21 April 2017 (UTC)
- Whoops. Forgot about this.
- Primefac (talk) 22:55, 18 May 2017 (UTC)
- Done and dusted. I ended up dropping the date for the '92 Olympics and adding in an exception for the Winter Games, since that made more sense. Primefac (talk) 12:25, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
South Korea
Looks like there are more flags for South Korea. per Template:Country data South Korea and Flag of South Korea, in current format we are using 1984-1997 flag for 1949 to 1997 ! here is the possible outcome
- {1947, "Flag of South Korea (1945-1948).svg"},
- {1949, "Flag of South Korea (1948-1949).svg"},
- {1983, "Flag of South Korea (1949-1984).png"}, (since they changed the flag on February 1984
- {1997, "Flag of South Korea (1984-1997).svg"},
- {2011, "Flag of South Korea (1997-2011).svg"},
- "Flag of South Korea.svg", Mohsen1248 (talk) 23:11, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
- Mohsen1248, it looks like the changes to Flag of South Korea happened fairly recently. However, I will look into the matter and take the appropriate actions(s). Primefac (talk) 02:41, 22 July 2017 (UTC)
India at 2013
I see we have Olympic flag for India for the year of 2013, not sure if that's necessary because whenever India participated under Olympic flag they used another IOC code like IOA or something like that. but if that should stay, you have to make an exception for the 2013 World Games, they participated under the Indian flag there, Source. Mohsen1248 (talk) 21:43, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
- Fixed. I have no idea why we'd include an Olympic flag for the one year when there wasn't actually any Olympic event going on (and you're right, India at the 2014 Winter Olympics lists them under IOP). I've removed it entirely. Thanks. Primefac (talk) 16:22, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
Mauritania's new flag, Malawi's flag at the 2012 games and Bulgaria's flag during the 1896-1936 Games
Mauritania has got a new flag with two red stripes (this means that every Olympics from 2020 will use this flag) and also, Malawi has flowned the current flag at the 2012 Olympics and Bulgaria has flowed the same as the current flag because the emblem didn't exist until 1946. Please change this 2607:FEA8:4F20:59F:2D7C:B3B7:8ADF:CAD0 (talk) 11:03, 12 August 2017 (UTC)

Hong Kong and Wales at the Commonwealth Games
The Hong Kong flag for the Commonwealth Games needs to be its British colonial ensign, the territory's current SAR flag shows when the flagCGFteam template is used. Also, the flag for Wales in the 1930 and 1934 British Empire Games articles show up as the Saint George's cross when it should be the Red Dragon flag, which has been used to represent the country long before it gained official status in the 1950s. VEOonefive 23:28, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
- VEO15, be easier on me (since you already know which flag it is) to post the flags and years here and I'll modify accordingly. Just saw my talk page post re: Wales, will fix shortly. Primefac (talk) 23:31, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
For Hong Kong, it should be . It was used until mid 1997, when sovereignty was transferred to China thus ceased being part of the Commonwealth. VEOonefive 23:34, 16 August 2017 (UTC)- Sack that, looking at its article, the flag went through some minor changes during its span.
VEOonefive 23:41, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'll get right on it. Primefac (talk) 23:44, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
- VEO15, it looks like the flags you've listed are currently being used in the proper locations, so... not sure what's the issue. Primefac (talk) 23:50, 16 August 2017 (UTC)
- But in the
{{flagCGF|HKG}}
template and its corresponding article, the SAR flag is used ( Hong Kong). Surely it should be its most recent colonial flag in general usage (for instance, in the all-time Commonwealth Games medal table list)? VEOonefive 00:30, 17 August 2017 (UTC)- If you put in
{{flagCGF|HKG|1994}}
, then sure, it'll show the most recent colonial flag ( Hong Kong), but when no year is given it defaults to the "newest" flag, which in this case is . We can't just ignore the post-1994 flag because the Olympics, World Athletics/Aquatics, etc all use this template as well, and since the Commonwealth Games are still occurring it's not like we can just cutoff {{flagCGF}} at '94 either. It's one of the downsides of having a meta template that handles as much as it does, but trust me when I say that this is easier to maintain than the (literally) hundreds of templates we used to have. Primefac (talk) 03:36, 17 August 2017 (UTC)- Looking at the raw module code, I see that Anguilla's trigram is suffixed specially for the Commonwealth Games so the code is not mixed up with Angola's in other events. Owing to its unique position, could the same be applied to Hong Kong so its historic identity for the Commonwealth Games in general is correct, whilst preserving its current identity for the other games it competes in? VEOonefive 18:51, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
- That's... actually quite a brilliant idea. I'll have to think about whether it would make more sense to do it in the {{flagCGF}} family or in this template, but it's definitely a possibility. Primefac (talk) 20:14, 17 August 2017 (UTC)

- I still believe it is an incorrect assumption based on what is being expressed in the press release. Individuals are to be referred to in the singular, but I still contend that the team should still be plural. However, we don't say "Russians" at the .... we say "Russia" so I understand the argument for how it is rendered.18abruce (talk) 16:16, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
- From what I have read (and listening to the official announcement) there is no "team", each individual athlete will be vetted and be listed as OAR. Primefac (talk) 16:20, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

- Yes that is a valid point. However, we are referring to a collective group of many athletes. Additionally, referring to the hockey teams and curling teams as an "athlete" seems very awkward. But I guess it then would be "team OAR" for those sports as well as team skiing, team figure skating, and relays. Thank you for taking the time to respond, I am not sure I agree, but I am getting there.18abruce (talk) 17:27, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
- To be honest, I'm just going off of official reports; I agree that it's about the strangest choice of wording/options ever. I'm keeping a peripheral eye on the related "at the Olympics" page and related articles, and if something changes I'll probably end up updating this template. Asian Indoor Games
Hi, We had Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan and I want to ask for few changes because of that.
- They use the name Tahiti for French Polynesia, I think maybe its better to use the name Tahiti for the NOC code of TAH, if not at least make an exception for the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and the Asian Games in general
- for the New Caledonia, they use the French flag on the official website here, so better to change the flag at least for the 2017 AIMAG and the Asian Games. even though I watched the opening ceremony and they used both flags on their delegation, so I don't know what's the best here, but we better go with the official website.
- for IOA, for the first time they are using the OCA flag, I think this should need an exception for this event to use the OCA flag instead of IOC.
- and there is a Refugee Team with the code of ART. is it possible to use the term Refugee Team and not "Athlete Refugee Team" for this event ? they also use the OCA flag this time as well.
- while FSM returns Federated States of Micronesia, still all wikipedia pages for this country just use Micronesia, example, we should change it here to just Micronesia or move all those pages to Federated States of Micronesia. Mohsen1248 (talk) 12:41, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
- I renumbered these mostly for ease of replying.
- Checking...
- Not sure. Based on New Caledonia, they actually have both flags as their official flag. However, I don't see New Caledonia listed on 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games or any of the related pages (I see they participated in Bowling, which doesn't have a separate 2017 AIMAG page).
- Not done. At one point I actually uploaded File:Olympic Council of Asia flag.png, but due to licensing/copyright issues we actually cannot host the flag (even in small/icon sizes)
- Done
Checking... - Should be doable, given that they're not the "Olympic" refugee team. The "A" is still in ART, but that's mostly unavoidable and probably not the end of the world. - Not done
Checking... - I know there's a reason for this, just not sure why... succinctness? I'll look into it.See below.
- I'll update things as I get to them. Primefac (talk) 19:31, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
- If we can't use the OCA flag, then the Olympic flag is the next best thing. as for New Caledonia, obviously 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games is not updated , as u see New Caledonia participated in the competition (even if with only 1 or 2 athletes) and Bowling will have a separate page very soon. we also have this page with the other New Caledonia flag. but as you said they use both flags (even at the opening ceremony), I'm fine with both but since the official website uses the French flag, i think that's better.
- and for the Refugee team, at the Olympics they used the code ROT. but here they use ART (same as IAAF for the IAAF World Champs) but without the word "Athlete" and with OCA flag and since we can't use that, the Olympic flag. Mohsen1248 (talk) 21:24, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
- Number 4 is done. Primefac (talk) 20:51, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
- Point #5 - the last time the issue was discussed it was actually determined that it should point to the full name. Someone moved it later on. I've moved everything back, so... no change to the template. Primefac (talk) 21:06, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
- Any more update ? the Refugee Team still returns Athlete Refugee Team and not just the Refugee Team, beside that the article Bowling at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games is created now with New Caledonia being included. also waiting for Tahiti name to be fixed. Mohsen1248 (talk) 06:28, 23 October 2017 (UTC)
- I do apologize. I could have sworn I asked the Multi-sports WikiProject for input, but I cannot seem to find the thread now. I will ask them and get back to you. As for ART, we cannot change the name of the team (it's hard-coded in) but the
|name=
parameter in {{flagIOC2}} allows for a custom name to be displayed, e.g. Refugee Team. Primefac (talk) 13:05, 23 October 2017 (UTC)- OK, I understand if we can't change the name for ART. as for other matters, that's OK to ask for other opinions but I think it's clear that they used the French flag for New Caledonia and the code TAH obviously stands for Tahiti . if they use French Polynesia somewhere else for other events, they use the code PYF or something else and not TAH. GBR giving wrong name
GBR should render as "Great Britain and Northern Ireland" (the name used by the teams), and not as just "Great Britain". -- DeFacto (talk). 19:16, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
- Not done. Most of the pages related to Great Britain say something along the lines of
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland competed as Great Britain at...
(or just say "Great Britain"). If this change is to be made, it should probably be made across the article text as well as the template, and for that you'd need a larger consensus. Primefac (talk) 19:21, 27 January 2018 (UTC)- (edit conflict) @Primefac: sorry, I was just rewording my request but we had an edit conflict. I was changing the comment as follows: GBR should be able to render as "Great Britain and Northern Ireland" or just "Great Britain" depending on the event and the year. - Ah, yes, for those appearances. I'll have a think about the best way to do this (and for what it's worth, it's not an "error" in the title, it's just not the most-accurate title). Primefac (talk) 19:32, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

FRY
Could someone please add the country alias FRY with the name FR Yugoslavia. This country appeared at the Olympics from 1994 until 2002. After that it was renamed "Serbia and Montenegro" but that name had not been coined at all back in the 90's. They used the same flag both as FR Yugoslavia and Serbia and Montenegro. Thanks,Tvx1 16:16, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- Tvx1, I'm not seeing any evidence that Yugoslavia ever participated under that specific country code. Primefac (talk) 16:30, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- What do you mean you see no evidence. Our individual articles on the team's campaigns (e.g. Atlanta 1996 clearly shows they competed as Yugoslavia, not Serbia and Montenegro. This[1][2] draw from the Sydney 2000 tennis also clearly shows a Yugoslavia team competing.Tvx1 18:23, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- You misunderstood. I meant the code FRY - it's not a real IOC code as far as I can tell.
- For what it's worth there's also a discussion at WP Olympics that is almost mirroring this one. Primefac (talk) 18:33, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- You are right, the country code they used was still YUG as with the SFR Yugoslavia. Still they didn't use the name or flag of Serbia&Montenegro and thus we should have another optional name for YUG, like we have with Great Britain following the above discussion.Tvx1 19:06, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- I suppose, but I'd prefer to let the other conversation play out first; no point in jumping the gun and then having to revert. Primefac (talk) 19:13, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
- Indeed, more research has shown that the IOC simply rewarded the medals up to winter 1992 and those from 1996 until 2002 to one and the same YUG.Tvx1 19:27, 30 January 2018 (UTC)

- I came here to ask for flag changes for Yugoslavia, and saw this discussion, while I'm oppose to using another IOC code. still we have to change the flag, from 1992 to 2003, they competed with YUG code but under this flag while the current system shows the old Yugoslavian flag for those articles. see Yugoslavia at the 2000 Summer Olympics. - I'm watching that discussion. Once something is decided (names, codes, years, etc) I'll make the appropriate changes. This template is used in too many places to be self-reverting six times "getting it right". Primefac (talk) 02:19, 1 February 2018 (UTC)
- I see you changed the YUG flag again, can't understand why, but if you are going to make exceptions . you should add 2001 World Games too. Mohsen1248 (talk) 18:11, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- A rather convincing argument was emailed to me regarding how the "old" YUG flag should be used for the generic cases were "Yugoslavia" is mentioned, since that's the most likely era they're referring to. I am happy to add in exception for the 2001 World Games (though a link to that page would be helpful since I can't find it) and I'm also open to further discussion about which flag should be shown for the "general" case of when something like {{flagIOC|YUG}}, which displays as Yugoslavia, is shown. Should we stick with the "old" flag, or go chronologically and go with the "newer" FRY flag? Primefac (talk) 18:22, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- Well I guess the SFR flag fits better for Yugoslavia in general. Yugoslavia mostly refers to the old Yugoslavia. but for a short period of time for few years they were known as Yugoslavia while they were "Serbia and Montenegro" they even participated at 1998 FIFA World Cup under Serbia/Montenegro Flag but with the name "Yugoslavia". I can't understand why we need exceptions only for the Olympics, from 1993 to 2002 they were still "Yugoslavia" but with Serbia/Montenegro Flag. to me the best solution is to use the "new" flag for 1993-2002 and the Old flag for the rest including Yugoslavia at the Olympics. - This discussion deserves to be seen by a wider audience, so I've started a thread at the VEX project for more input. Primefac (talk) 19:35, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

Please replace the following at Module:Country alias:
URS = { name = "Soviet Union", {1955, "Flag of the Soviet Union (1923-1955).svg"}, {1980, "Flag of the Soviet Union (1955-1980).svg"}, "Flag of the Soviet Union.svg", },
With this:
URS = { name = "Soviet Union", {1936, "Flag of the Soviet Union (1924-1936).svg"}, {1955, "Flag of the Soviet Union (1936-1955).svg"}, {1980, "Flag of the Soviet Union (1955-1980).svg"}, "Flag of the Soviet Union.svg", },
This change will accomplish two things:
(1) File:Flag of the Soviet Union (1923-1955).svg (which is presently invoked) redirects to File:Flag of the Soviet Union (1936-1955).svg; this change will bypass the redirect.
(2) The earlier version of the Soviet flag, at File:Flag of the Soviet Union (1924-1936).svg and not presently invoked here, will be used where appropriate (prior to 1936). Jdaloner (talk) 09:42, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
Poland
Hi, based on Flag of Poland, Poland used the new flag from January 1980. but per {1980, "Flag of Poland (1928-1980).svg"}, we use this flag for the year of 1980 as well. while they used the new flag for almost the whole year specially 1980 Summer Olympics. South Korea
Hi again, I asked for flag change for South Korea almost a year ago. here ,I want to ask for that again, I'm not necessarily supporting these changes but if this template and this should be similar. the current situation uses Flag of South Korea (1984-1997).svg for 1950-1997 which is obviously wrong based on the file name. ANT code is ambiguous
For Antigua and Barbuda, the IOC code is ANT, but the ISO code is ATG.
For Netherlands Antilles, the IOC code is AHO, but the ISO code (and the FIFA code) is ANT.
Template:Country data ANT redirects to Netherlands Antilles.
This module lists ANT as Antigua and Barbuda, which is its IOC code.
There is a list of differences between IOC, ISO, and FIFA at List of FIFA country codes#FIFA, IOC and ISO differences. There may be other overlaps; I haven't looked.
What, if anything, should be done in this module to minimize confusion for editors? – Jonesey95 (talk) 08:03, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
- Follow-up: according to the table on the FIFA page, ANT is the only code that overlaps between two different countries. Before or after any sort of wholesale change is made, however, pages that use the country code ANT will need to be examined to see which actual country is intended, and changes may need to be made to the codes on some of those pages. – Jonesey95 (talk) 08:18, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
- Depends on the intended usage. This template was designed for use in sports competitions, so the ISO code was never taken into consideration. If it's just FIFA that's different, I can code in the backend so it puts in the proper country if/when that usage is used. I do agree, however, that seeing where ANT is used in combination with this template would help greatly. Primefac (talk) 14:41, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
Taiwan?
Is there a reason Taiwan isn't included in this? Happy to add it myself but want to make sure there isn't a specific reason for it being excluded. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:18, 24 September 2018 (UTC)

- I don't think it's "wrong" necessarily - I think '73 and '75 fell in that period where Taiwan was still competing under that name (before PRC threw their hissy fit) - but that page also uses {{flagcountry}} which doesn't call this template. there are no articles about Taiwan at the XYZ games (other than the TPE pages) so as of yet I don't see a need to include them. A suggest from tr wiki
Hi, I recenty implemented this module into Turkish Wikipedia, and I saw that some countries are written two times on the main countries table. I workaround s solution about this problem. Can't we change this line:
local country = countries[alias]
with this:
local ulke = countries[countries[alias]] or countries[alias]
And then instead of adding the same data twice, just redirect the codes as ["SWK"] = "SAR",
. It seems that it workes just fine on tr wiki and I wanted to share it here. ~ Z (m) 22:07, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks, that's a good idea. It would be slightly more efficient to have a separates aliases table and the comment block near the top starting "The following names occur twice..." might be converted to a table. On the other hand, it is convenient to have all the country codes in one table.
local countryAliases = { ANG_CGF = "AIA", SWK = "SAR", } local country = countries[alias] or countries[countryAliases[alias]]
- Either of these would be good. Johnuniq (talk) 00:04, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
SWZ
@Primefac: I forget how all this is supposed to work but a couple of articles have an error due to the recent edit for SWZ. For example, 1976 Summer Olympics shows
- Lua error in Module:Country_alias at line 1791: Invalid country alias: Expression error: Unexpected < operator
due to use of {{flagIOC|SWZ}}
. {{FlagIOC}} passes " Olympics" to {{FlagIOC2}} as parameter 2 and that sets fullName. Then an expression error occurs, I think because the String match would give an empty string so the expression would be "<2018". That's as far as I can take it at the moment. Johnuniq (talk) 23:03, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
- Ugh, hadn't thought of that case; I was wondering what was causing the "<" error to show up when I was testing, but I figured it was something to do with the string matching. I'll go back to sandboxing it. Thanks. Primefac (talk) 23:30, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
- I know that having small details in the template wikitext is handy but if you like I will put the template logic in the module where it would be much more robust and understandable (for Lua coders!). Johnuniq (talk) 02:51, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
- It's certainly getting to the point where back-end coding all of these name changes is getting problematic... it would be nice to get it in Lua so as to a little more easily deal with it. If you've got more time than I do (which is likely) to code that up, it would be much appreciated. Primefac (talk) 11:20, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
- Basically we just need a small local to adjust the
alias
based on the year/games inputs. Primefac (talk) 12:15, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

@Primefac: I have nearly finished preparing some code for the module to replace the logic in the template. I will put it in the sandbox soon. However, I would like something clarified first. My reading of the template is that if fullName is given then year and games are set from fullName. If fullName is "2012 Competition" then year = 2012 and games = Competition. That's fine. But if fullName is "Competition" then year is assumed to be an empty string (will not equal any year) or zero (will be less than any year). Any value in the year parameter would be ignored. Is that what is wanted, or was it too painful to say something like "use year from fullName if fullName is given and starts with a number; otherwise use year parameter if given; otherwise use empty string/zero"? Johnuniq (talk) 01:22, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
- If
|fullName=
is given, then it would be assumed that|year=
would not also be used, because why give both? In other words, if fullName is given, it's assumed that the year (if there is one) will come from that and return a null string if|fullName=Competition
. The only time 0 should be passed to the year is if someone puts|year=0
, which would (properly) give an error. Primefac (talk) 14:23, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
Real life became particularly complicated in the last couple of days but I think I have moved the alias exception logic from Template:Country alias/sandbox to Module:Country alias/sandbox. The module now has two sets of comments that refer to alias exceptions: the original notes at the top of the module and the new comments before function getAlias which I copied (and tweaked) from the template. It might be better to remove the duplication. Johnuniq (talk) 09:01, 21 January 2019 (UTC)
- Looks good. I'll work on condensing the comments to make it a little easier to read. I wonder if it would be worth implementing the suggestion above into the getAlias to remove the duplicate countries like CUR and CUW. Primefac (talk) 15:18, 21 January 2019 (UTC)
- I put that idea into the sandbox. After chewing it over for a while I decided to have a separate countryAliases table so all the country codes with definitions that are identical to another country code are in one place. Question: what is 'IOP, IOA, OAR'? Is that really a country code that is used in a template somewhere? Johnuniq (talk) 09:27, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
- I'm not really sure how we'd code it otherwise; it's used at Independent Olympians at the Olympic Games, where all three codes have been used in the past. Primefac (talk) 15:01, 30 January 2019 (UTC)
- OK, just curious. I updated Template:Country alias and Module:Country alias from the sandboxes so please keep an eye out for any unintended trouble. Johnuniq (talk) 04:09, 31 January 2019 (UTC)

- I put that idea into the sandbox. After chewing it over for a while I decided to have a separate countryAliases table so all the country codes with definitions that are identical to another country code are in one place. Also, I thought it better to keep the getAlias function with its current purpose of handling exceptions only. Please check each of my edits, although the diffs are hard to follow.

Time expired
Chronological summary of the 2016 Summer Olympics is in Category:Pages with script errors with a zillion "The time allocated for running scripts has expired" errors. That occurs because {{country alias}} is called 3912 times! I'm not sure that encouraging such bloat is desirable but I'm not going to fix that so I'm wondering whether changing Module:Country alias to cope with the fact that it can be called thousands of times would be desirable. The technical solution would be to move the large tables from that module to a new Module:Country alias/data and access it with mw.loadData
which would greatly speed up the module when called a thousand times on a page. @Primefac: What do you think? Prune/split the article or split the module? Johnuniq (talk) 02:51, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
- A combination of both would probably do well. Dropping the country info into a /data module would help (and make coding changes like the one above a little easier to get to), but I do wonder if we really need that huge of an article (I notice that the 2012 version isn't that large)... unfortunately that's not a change we can really make here though. Might as well start with what we can! Primefac (talk) 15:00, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
@Primefac: I have created Module:Country alias/data (and its sandbox). Please template protect the new module. I will then update Module:Country alias to match its sandbox. Quick test:
- Module:Country alias • Module:Country alias/sandbox • same content

Unfortunately the fix does not seem to be sufficient for Chronological summary of the 2016 Summer Olympics according to a preview I performed. I'll think about that after it goes live. Johnuniq (talk) 07:01, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
- Done. Primefac (talk) 12:13, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, I updated the module and checked the before-and-after results at Chronological summary of the 2016 Summer Olympics. There were no visible differences except that I got lucky and the page saved without any errors. The page is still far too long and will collapse at some point because the NewPP report includes "Lua time usage: 9.486/10.000 seconds". Johnuniq (talk) 22:33, 4 February 2019 (UTC)
I was irritated to see that Chronological summary of the 2016 Summer Olympics still uses a lot of Lua time, even after moving the data to a separate module. Investigation shows these results for that article:
Template | Occurrences | Calls to {{country alias}} |
---|---|---|
{{flagIOC}} | 1023 | 3 |
{{flagIOC-rt}} | 33 | 3 |
{{flagIOCathlete}} | 200 | 2 |
Each call to {{country alias}} invokes Module:Country alias so the module is invoked 1023*3 + 33*3 + 200*2 = 3568 times in Chronological summary of the 2016 Summer Olympics. That takes about 6.5 seconds of Lua time which is 1.8 ms/call. If a better fix were wanted, it would involve changing the way the templates work. For example, {{flagIOC}} calls {{flagIOC2}} and the latter calls {{country alias}} three times. The fix would be to have the former invoke a new function in the module to do the equivalent of flagIOC2 in a single call. That would reduce the number of calls to the module from 3568 to 1256 which should reduce the Lua time by about the same factor. Johnuniq (talk) 04:20, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
- Every few months I come back to the flagXYZ templates and attempt to tweak them a little bit to be more effective and/or condense them. Now that you mention it, it is rather silly to call a wrapper that calls a big module three times. Even if it's simple, it definitely would make more sense to make a single call to {{country alias}}. I'll see what I can do. Primefac (talk) 15:04, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
- I implemented {{flagIOC}} in Module:Country alias/sandbox. A preview suggests that it works but it was a bit rushed so I'll leave it for a while and think about it some more before updating the main module. It greatly reduces the Lua time at Chronological summary of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Johnuniq (talk) 07:10, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
I updated Module:Country alias and {{flagIOC}}. I don't think I'll bother with the related flag templates (such as {{flagIOC2}}) unless there is a need. At Chronological summary of the 2016 Summer Olympics, Template:FlagIOC dropped from occupying 57% of the transclusion expansion time to 13%, and the Lua time usage dropped from 9.4 seconds to 3.9. Johnuniq (talk) 04:24, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

Turkmenistan
Hi, Based on this source Turkmenistan made some changed in the flag in January 1997, while currently we are using the 1992-1997 flag for the whole year of 1997, for example 1997 West Asian Games were held on November. so I'm asking for a change, either changing 1997, "Flag of Turkmenistan (1992-1997).svg"} to 1996, "Flag of Turkmenistan (1992-1997).svg"} or just make an exception for the 1997 West Asian Games. also they again changed the flag on January 2001. even though I'm not sure if we had an important even in 2001, but it's just better to also change the next line from 2001 to 2000. thanks in advance. Mohsen1248 (talk) 22:26, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
- {1996, "Flag of Turkmenistan (1992-1997).svg"},

- Done. You're probably right in that there weren't any games that early in the year, and if I remember correctly for a lot of the countries I just used the year that was on the file without really digging much deeper. Thanks for the note. Primefac (talk) 14:29, 29 March 2019 (UTC)
ART
Hi again, I don't know if I asked this before. but I wonder if that's technically possible to have a different name for NOC code for different competitions ? if that's possible the ART code should return just the "Refugee Team" and not Refugee Team for the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. that's the official term they used for the competition. even the article is Refugee Team at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games. that's no big deal if this is not possible technically because a redirect already solved this but I thought that should be better. thanks in advance. Italian flag 2003
Could someone update the 2003 Italian flag, which is absolutely wrong, as you can see in it.Wiki. The correct flag is this one:
Thank you. -- Nick.mon (talk) 10:45, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
- Nick.mon, I don't think you're correct in saying it's "absolutely wrong", because both images (File:Flag of Italy (Pantone, 2003).svg and File:Flag of Italy (2003–2006).svg) say that they're using the same pantone. Honestly I feel more likely to trust the second image, if only because it's actually used (the "Pantone" version is used on about four pages globally) Primefac (talk) 11:36, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
- Primefac Well, the official colors used from 2003 ti 2006 are these ones: Pantone 18-5642TC (Golf Green), Pantone 11-4201TC (Cloud Dancer) and Pantone 18-1660TC (Tomato), as you can see here which are completely different from the ones used in 2003–06 flag. -- Nick.mon (talk) 11:41, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
- I've asked for input at wT:VEX; both images were made by the same author at around the same time (relatively speaking) so I guess I'm just wondering why everyone is using the "wrong" version. If the "Pantone" version really is the one that should be used, then the current flag should be redirected or something. Primefac (talk) 01:30, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
- I suppose it would be worth pinging the creator for their thoughts. They're not super-active on enwiki but who knows. Primefac (talk) 01:46, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
- Primefac I sincerly don't know why this version has been used for such a long time. However, the "correct" Pantone colors are listed even in the file's description, but you can easily search on Google and discover that they're completely different from the ones used in the file (Pantone 18-5642TC, Pantone 11-4201TC and Pantone 18-1660TC). The flag is wrong, it looks quite evident to me. -- Nick.mon (talk) 17:52, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
- Fair enough; I'm mostly trying to do my due diligence to avoid having to update and then revert an edit to a template transcluded on many thousands of pages. Hence I'd prefer to get at least one other opinion on the matter; if you're right I'll likely just convert the incorrect one into a redirect. Primefac (talk) 18:03, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, of course, let's wait for other opinions. That file was there for years, another week doesn't matter :) -- Nick.mon (talk) 18:47, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
- And regarding file's replacement, you're the expert here, so I trust you. -- Nick.mon (talk) 18:51, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
- The picture currently shown at Flag of Italy is obviously wrong. This not this.
- The colours first specified, which looks like it was 18 September 2002, then made official 17 January 2003 (?), are shown here (Pantone textile 18-5642TC (green), Pantone textile 11-4201TC (white), Pantone textile 18-1660TC (red)).
- Then after the controversy the colours were changed slightly, which looks like is was 2 June 2004, then made official April 14, 2006 (?), are shown here (Pantone textile 17-6153 TCX (green), Pantone textile 11-0601 TCX (white), Pantone textile 18-1662 TCX (red)).
- Summary
- What's interesting is that although the pantone version is official, it seems that the original brighter shades continue to be used primarily [5] not [6] here and on it.wiki. So another question besides fixing the 2002-2004 (or 2003-2006 depending on when it was official?) flag icon colours, is whether we should add an icon for the flag from 2004 onward (or 2006 onward) to the last pantone specifications or keep it with the brighter colours? Other than fixing the flags, we should also structure this section on en.wiki like they did at it.wiki. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 20:27, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
- Ok, as always in Italy we do things much more complicated than they should be. So, which is the correct version, used from 2003 to 2006? I saw that in it.Wiki is used this one File:Flag of Italy (Pantone, 2003).svg, with the correct Pantone colors; but in the link of the Interior Ministry, the flag looks very different to this and more similar to the other version (even if with small differences). -- Nick.mon (talk) 15:31, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
- Well, they specified the exact colour codes so there is no question. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 15:48, 25 July 2019 (UTC)

Having read through most of the discussions at commons:File talk:Flag_of_Italy.svg, it seems like there has always been some concern with converting between Pantone and RGB. While it seems that the current flag discussion has died down, no one has ever started a discussion on the 03-06 variant to decide which pantone to use. Primefac (talk) 18:11, 25 July 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Primefac and Vaselineeeeeeee! So, what we have decided about the Italian flag? -- Nick.mon (talk) 12:22, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
- We have not come to any consensus. While I can see your arguments for switching the flags, the fact that it's not used anywhere makes me think that there's a reason for not switching. I think if you want to get it changed you'll need a centralized discussion such as at WP:VPM. Primefac (talk) 16:03, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
- It's a very strange situation, anyway if in it.Wiki this flag (File:Flag of Italy (Pantone, 2003).svg) is never used (except for few cases) maybe there's a reason. I'm not saying that users in Italian Wikipedia are more expert (not at all...), but maybe they know better the situation. Anyway, probably I will follow your suggestion, thanks :)-- Nick.mon (talk) 17:02, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

The crown in Liechtenstein's flag was different than now until 1982, so I'll request to add this one:
- {1982, "Flag of Liechtenstein (1937-1982).svg"},
Also, Spain did not use the Olympic flag in the Moscow Olympics in 1980, but its NOC flag (File:Spain Olympic Flag 1980.svg) instead. August-54 (talk) 16:56, 8 February 2020 (UTC)
Lithuania
I noticed we are using the 1988-2004 flag for Lithuania for 2004 Olympics which can be wrong, per Flag of Lithuania, they changed the flag on July 2004, one month before the Olympics. so unless there is a source indicate they still used the old flag, I think we should make a change. change this code {2004, "Flag of Lithuania (1988-2004).svg"} to {2003, "Flag of Lithuania (1988-2004).svg"} or simply make the 2004 Olympics an exception which is probably a better idea. - again I have to intervene here. I suggest more researches should be done before making the change, I know there is something about a different flag from 2004-2013 in Flag of Afghanistan article. but there is a picture in the same page exactly against that. take a look at this one the picture is taken in 2010 and the flag in the pic looks exactly the same as the current flag, not that suggested 2004-2013 flag which made me believe they didn't officially change the flag. they just used that other flag (with different logo size) sometimes. Mohsen1248 (talk) 22:47, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
- When looking at the opening ceremony videos, Afghanistan definitely used the 2004 version of the flag (not the current one) at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics. Therefore, those pages should not have the current (2013-present) flag. August-54 (talk) 10:51, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

- 2006 AG smaller seal but that's in yellow. not white!
- 2010 AG bigger seal but not as big as the supposed "current flag"
- 2014 AG still the smaller one, remember they were supossed to have a new flag from 2013 !
- 2018 AG still the smaller one !
- and most interesting Rio 2016 OG still the smaller one !
- if you ask me, Afghanistan never changed its flag but they just never standardized it, so different flag were used in different events (sport events or not) so I'm not sure if making those 3 Olympics as exception for the smaller flag is a good idea. apparently they are still using that flag mostly. so my suggestion is or to just leave it with the "current flag" or use that "old flag" for all the competitions (even until 2021). even though obviously there is no perfect solution. beside that I understand the official language of this country, I also checked their local sources and never found a source about changing the flag recently. I'm not even sure if that 2002-2004 flag is correct or not. all Afghan sources only talk about having a flag since the fall of Taliban.Mohsen1248 (talk) 17:58, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I'll hold off doing anything until there's a solid consensus. Primefac (talk) 18:01, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
- This is very interesting, I also took my time to check all the opening ceremonies in the previous Asian Games.
- Cool. Since there's some concern/dispute about the "official" flag during this period I'll set just these three to show the smaller seal. Primefac (talk) 17:23, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

- If they used a different flag for a specific Games then I'm happy to add in an exception, but I'm not about to go searching through potentially dozens of videos looking for a single screenshot. Could you please provide a link and timestamp in which you see the flag with the smaller seal being used? Primefac (talk) 11:40, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
Ghana in 1960
Did Ghana at the 1960 Summer Olympics really have that colonial-era flag of Gold Coast? This one here should be removed:
- {1960, "Flag of the Gold Coast.svg"},
And these should be added in the place of the above mentioned one:
- {1957, "Flag of the Gold Coast.svg"},
- {1961, "File:Flag of the Union of African States (1958-1961).svg"},

Zambia
According to this Commons page, Zambia changed its original flag with a darker shade of green to the current one on 8 March 1996, a few months before the Atlanta Olympics. So, please change the year parameter for "Flag of Zambia (1964–1996).svg" from "1996" to "1995". August-54 (talk) 17:38, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

Afghanistan
Hello! Regarding the afghan flag i think this should be changed regarding ceremonial datas. The years from 2004 until 2012 should be changed. The flag in 2004 should be Flag of Afghanistan (2002–2004).svg
the flag in 2008 and 2012 should be Flag of Afghanistan (2004–2013).svg
. If you should find videos that the flag are featured in please find them.

Hello! Is it possible for you to change the Seychelles parameter from 1996 to 1995?. Because Seychelles changed their flag on the 10th of June 1996 a month before the Atlanta Games. Yours sincerely, Sondre --80.212.169.236 (talk) 09:43, 24 April 2021 (UTC)

Flag of Rhodesia (1964).svg has been deleted. Can someone replace it in the data module? I'd suggest using Flag of Southern Rhodesia (1924–1964).svg. - Sumanuil (talk) 02:26, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
- Not done: Flag was not deleted but moved, so there is still a redirect there and (as near as I can tell) the flag still shows up on the pages where it is called. Primefac (talk) 11:13, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
Australia
I'm requesting a change to the converted version, which is used everywhere else in Wikipedia. So please change this one:
- "Flag of Australia.svg",
Into this one:
- "Flag of Australia (converted).svg",
August-54 (talk) 08:32, 28 July 2021 (UTC)
- There are almost three times as many uses of the former (link) as the latter (link) so I am not inclined to change it. Primefac (talk) 09:56, 28 July 2021 (UTC)

The Cayman Islands used their white disc flag at many games.
I thing the following should catch all the odd ones out, at least until their next games.

The name change of "Swaziland" (SWZ) to "Eswatini" (SWZ) has now become official in everything in which the country competes (i.e. the Olympics, etc.). However, unlike "Macedonia" (MKD) → "North Macedonia" (MKD), it has not been fully implemented in Module:Country alias. For example, on the All-time Olympic Games medal table page, typing "{{flagIOCteam|SWZ}}" leaves the country name out of date, but typing "{{flagIOCteam|SWZ_YO2018}}" makes the country code (which is visible on the page) appear as "(SWZ_YO2018)" instead of "(SWZ)" visibly.
Thus, on Module:Country alias, this:
elseif alias == 'SWZ' then
if fullName then
if year and year >= 2018 and fullName ~= '2018 Commonwealth Games' then
alias = 'SWZ_YO2018'
end
elseif year and year >= 2018 and games ~= 'Commonwealth Games' then
alias = 'SWZ_YO2018'
end
...should be changed to:
elseif alias == 'SWZ' then
if year and year >= 2018 then
alias = 'SWZ_2018'
end

- As a note, the reason why there are two competing if statements is because the name changed halfway through the year and it's necessary in order to allow the Youth Olympics but not the Commonwealth Games. Primefac (talk) 11:49, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
- Primefac, ahhh, I see - my apologies. As it seems(?) that overall tables such as All-time Olympic Games medal table is the only sort of place where this will matter, I've swapped the use of {{FlagIOCteam}} there for Eswatini out for the expanded wikicode, as has been done for North Macedonia. firefly ( t · c ) 12:21, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
- It does appear that the all-time list is the only place where a year isn't provided (at least for {{flagIOCteam}} use), but I'll do some tracking and see about potentially making things default to the current name when appropriate; i.e. if MKD and SWZ (and potentially others) are not used for the historical names w/o years then we can default to the new name unless a pre-X year is defined. Primefac (talk) 12:37, 24 July 2021 (UTC)

After a fairly fuzzy search I found the following pages that call this module via the various {{flagIOC}}-type templates without a year or other designation that would help narrow down "Swaziland or Eswatini":
- List of participating nations at the Winter Youth Olympic Games: has never competed, so
SWZ
should probably show Eswatini. - List of participating nations at the Summer Youth Olympic Games: should be Eswatini
- 2018–2020 CAVB Beach Volleyball Continental Cup: not sure which it should be, as the competition started in 2018 and ended in 2020, but I think SWZ didn't play until it was Eswatini (based on the references). That being said, it is an Olympic qualifier, so the use of {{flagIOC}} is appropriate here.
- 2008 African Weightlifting Championships: incorrect use of {{flagIOC}} so somewhat of a moot point but I thought I would mention it (should be Swaziland for the record)
- List of CGF country codes: listed at [16] as Eswatini, so should show that
- List of IOC country codes: uses {{flagicon}} to show Eswatini, but breaks the {{flagIOC}} pattern for all other countries (i.e. should show Eswatini)
- List of participating nations at the Winter Olympic Games: should be Swaziland (in my opinion) as Eswatini has not competed under that name in the Winter Olympics, but I'm willing to be persuaded otherwise
- 1976 Summer Olympics: shows properly as Swaziland (via the redirect)
- 1980 Summer Olympics boycott: shows properly as Swaziland via the redirect
Now, with all that being said, and the fact that the 1980 list has a whole host of "hacked" outputs (e.g. Bahrain, Bermuda, Paraguay, etc), I do suppose that the two outstanding "Swaziland" instances in '76 and '80 can just be changed in a similar fashion, as well as the Winter Olympics usage. Would like to get thoughts before making any changes, though. Primefac (talk) 19:38, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
- Done for both MKD and SWZ. Please feel free to check things and let me know if I need further tweaks. There will be old cases of both codes that will show the new name, and they will likely need to be updated manually and/or changed to use something like {{flagicon}}. - Please see this discussion and this discussion, in which no consensus has been reached as to whether there is an official flag for the various games, and thus setting exceptions for every variation is problematic. Primefac (talk) 00:14, 19 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Primefac: I think a change is necessary now, since Flag of Afghanistan.svg is now redirected to the Taliban flag. I suggest changing this line "Flag of Afghanistan.svg", to "Flag of Afghanistan (2013–2021).svg", I mean using that flag for the period of 2004 to 2021 (and after that until they officially change the flag). Afghan athletes are still participating under that old flag. Mohsen1248 (talk) 01:27, 22 December 2021 (UTC)

Template:FlagIOCathlete
@Primefac: re. Special:Diff/1067430903/1067431244, Template:FlagIOCathlete cannot use the module without that change as the module only reads parameter 3 from frame:getParent().args
and parameter 3 needs to have " Olympics" appended to it. The page exceeding the PEIS limit is Japan at the 2020 Summer Olympics, and I just had it fixed before your revert. User:GKFXtalk 12:34, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, and I just self-reverted; I forgot that it was {{{3}}} and not a named parameter, which would have allowed us to set it as
{{{3}}} Olympics
as is done at {{country alias}}. Apologies. Primefac (talk) 12:36, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
