New South Greenland map

I'm really sorry to begin the new year with yet another request, but would it be possible to add one more brief detail to your NSG map? I think it would help readers if we showed the area of Captain Johnson's 1821 voyage. I don't have specific coordinates, but a short faint line off the western coast of the peninsula, near the northern tip, should suffice, with the note: "Area of Capt. Johnson's 1821 voyage". Thank you for putting the Johnson details on the map. I think the article is almost ready for a run at FAC but I'll leave it a day or two to see if anything else turns up. One of these days I will master the art of map-making, but at present On-line Map Creation is beyond me. I have been trying to prepare something for Mozart's Italian journeys, which I am working on; I can get an outline, but thereafter my requests for details (cities, tracks etc) are ignored, and I've no idea anyway how to transfer the map to my browser. On the question of mapping, I am making progress. Following the instructions you left on my talkpage I can now do the first three stages of OMC, i.e. I can produce a map which shows correctly-located cities, connected by a track line. Of course the map looks nothing like the beauty you provided for Mozart family Grand Tour, and I expect that's where your fourth and fifth stages come in. Unfortunately, I don't understand "I use print screen to capture the map and paste it into MS Paint or Paint.NET" Is this a step that anyone can do? Also, I'm rather confused as to how the map, in whatever final form it emerges, get to my browser. I am determined to master the mapping art, so any further hints would be much appreciated. Thanks for supporting the article at FAC. I also thought I'd report my progress as a fledgling map-maker. I can do a decent sketch, with all my cities marked in their correct locations, and the route through them clearly marked. I have not been able to get beyond that point; try as I will to follow your and other instructions, things don't work out. Perhaps I'm missing some software or something. Anyhow, what I've done is print off my sketchmap and then scanned it in as a jpg file. It is visible at File:Mozartinitalymap.jpg. I imagine it is possible to use graphics software to do the finishing touches on this version - colour the sea, bold the city names, put in direction arrows, change the colour of some lines - and I hope to learn how to do that. I use Windows, and I would like to use Paint to bring the map up to standard. I don't mean to try your patience, but what I would like is a simple set of instructions, which even I can understand, that will enable me to get my interim sketch version up to a finished standard. Then I would never have to ask again. With all your commitments, I don't expect this to have priority. The article is developing in my sandbox, but won't be brought to mainspace before the weekend. I need some help with Jackson Lake State Park (Ohio). What creek was impounded to make the lake? It isn't mentioned in the park's website. I can't access a map of the area from "work". Also, any hook ideas? I am thinking, ...that Jackson Lake State Park now the location of a thriving second growth forest was once home to the iron, coal and salt industries? Map-making: Progress report

Well, I successfully pasted my map into MS Paint. I then experimented with the tools, trying to see which did what. I was successful in colouring some of my track lines, but when I tried to paint the sea, problems began. The space filler left lots of spaces between the colour and the lines, including the coordinate lines, so instead of a rich, single area of sea such as you have in the New South Greenland map, I got lots of straggly bits of unconnected colour. When I tried to use the brush to fill in the spaces manually, I got into trouble with the coastlines. The paint is opaque, so the coastlines simply disappear - as do the coordinate lines. So I have some things still to learn. I suppose one partial answer is to redraw the map without coordinates, which are not really necessary here, but how do I paint up to the coastlnes? How can I embolden the town names? How can I add direction arrows? These are the things I still need to learn. Again, thanks for your patience.

The curse of the Map, Chapter 64

I thought I'd better update you as to my despairing efforts to create a map. Whenever I have prepared the sketchmap at OMC, in the form want it, I am unable to progress. Whatever I do ends up with me losing the map, and having to start again.

The map won't save by the normal right-click method. I've tried pressing control/PrtSc which has no effect at all. I've tried the Download button on OCR, which produces a window asking me where I want to download to, with Mozilla Firefox as an option on the memo. So I select Mozilla Firefox, which appears to work - until I check what's been downloaded, which turns out to be a window telling me that I can't download without Winzip which I don't have. Since the Paintbox won't accept my scanned-in version, I'm out of ideas. It is very frustrating: there must be an answer - what am I doing wrong??!!?

Well, on a lighter note, New South Greenland got promoted, thanks to your map, but I'm beginning to wish I'd never heard of Mozart and his wretched Italian journeys! Got a cold, too. Brianboulton (talk) 18:25, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your very kind offer of rescue. I have now put the draft article Mozart in Italy into mainspace, and my latest version of the map is in it. Check it out (it's 300px at present and probably needs to be a bit smaller). I devised the map on OMC using their "colour" option (which I didn't previously know existed), cropped it as best I could, took it to the paintbox and coloured the lines. Didn't try the direction arrows (and not really sure it needs them). I personally think it will do, though if you could tidy up the right side, that would be good. If you think that FAC will require something a tad more polished, I'll maybe take up your offer to do some finishing work on my OMC creation. But no need for immediate action, I think. I'm glad you liked the map. The missing city is Brescia; if you can make the city names a bit more prominent, as well as cleaning up the right side, so much the better, & I'd be most grateful. As to the DYK suggestion, I thought also the fact that the 14-year-old Mozart met the Jacobite Pretender Bonnie Prince Charlie in Rome, in 1770, might be an interesting one, too. Rovereto and Brescia weren't mentioned in the article. They were once, but got edited out. I've put brief mentions back in, rather than amend the map. There are several places mentioned that I've not put into the map (Lodi, Vicenze, Padova) because I don't want to crowd it. It's a map of the general route rather than a detailed itinerary, and I'm very pleased with it as it is. If someone raises a fuss at PR I'll have to think about it. Columbia Slough

I nominated the slough article just now at FAC. Your suggestions were most helpful and led me to something new. I realized toward the end of the peer review that the published GNIS coordinates at both source and mouth could not be correct. I sent an e-mail Friday to the GNIS manager and got an answer Saturday saying basically, yes, you are right, and we have replaced our old coordinates with the ones you suggested. Do you have a pic of a hollow that could be added to the valley article? I think it would be very helpful. What a hollow is, is very obvious to us, but it seems to be a very regional word. Teedyuscung

Teedyuscung has turned into a pretty big project. I won't work on it much again until Thursday when I "work" again. Any edits that you can make will be greatly appreciated. I am sure there's a hook too. His death was pretty brutal and notable. Perhaps the hook will be there. I think I'll contact Kevin Myers about it too. If I remember correctly he was pretty helpful with Fort Antes, Shikellamy and Elizabeth Catherine Montour. Dtbohrer has been helpful too. This could be a GA I think. Not sure. Akron editors

Hi there, I suspect there might be a bit of sockpuppetry going on and before I file a CU was wondering if you thought my reasoning was logical. The following editors all have similar styles in content and summaries, one also uploaded an image the day after it was deleted that was originally claimed to be the work of another.

Probable users:

• Troop330 (not 100% sure, but looks to fit) edited from May 4-August 29
• Sleepydre edited from October 10-27
• Dreadys15 edited from November 2-30
• Sleepyak3 editedfrom December 2-29
• Rubohcity began editing on January 3-present

Probable IPs:

• 66.61.84.234 edited from January 3-8
• 66.61.87.219 began editing January 8-present

Examples: Images:

• Sleepydre uploaded a file, it was deleted, then Sleepyak3 uploaded the exact same image a day after the original was deleted.
• Checking there commons images and here, I noticed some users also use Source as anonymous Akronite when tagging them as copyvios. (ex. File:Ybridge.jpg)

Summaries:

• Rubohcity and 219 use summaries with similar wording when adding previously removed content User diff IP diff

Other:

• 219 was blocked at 18:24, January 14, 2009, Rubohcity began editing at 18:44, January 14, 2009 following the exact same edits as the IP

These are just things I've noticed as I've come across all of these editors (except Troop 300, but that account appears to be the starter). The one thing that bothers me most is Sleepydre and Sleepyak3 uploading the same image, each of them claiming it to be their own work. I have tagged it for having the wrong license (it was licensed as Public Domain as a work by the Federal Government), though it should probably be speedily deleted yet again. According to the metadata on the file, this user may actually be the photographer, but there is no way to know and I'm pretty sure the University owns the copyright, not the photographer. Ohio state parks

I received your message and am very grateful for your input. I take it from your silence that I don't have to annotate my edits on my user-page draft. In essence, all references can be taken to be sourced from the "Journeys Over Water" catalog, which containsamong other things a timeline for my father's career. I'm not sure how to handle that situation. The other references may well be on the page by error: from my early reading I thought it was important to 'reference' outside articles and books on the subject of interest. If the presence of these references, absent a direct connection to the article, is inappropriate, I'll delete them (with regrets LOL).

Someone else is drafting the 'career' sections and I will review/edit them before adding them. Once the page is done it was my intention to create a new page, not to "Move" it. Is this appropriate???

Vigo

Where is Terre Haute in relation to that township? This place, as far as I can tell is described as a "town", which could mean township. But it is also described as about 6 miles south of Terre Haute. It shows up on Google Maps as pretty much part of Terre Haute today. I am almost certain it no longer exists but haven't ever been to Terre Haute so i don't actually know that. I just don't like putting together town articles much so thought maybe someone else would notice and do it, Vigo is linked from quite a few articles. --IvoShandor (talk) 05:25, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

More curious

I have thought about this for awhile, since you commented about the two not being the same. My thoughts follow, rambling, and possibly incoherent at times. :-)

Bear with me. My guess is that the boundaries have changed, significantly, since the Vigo Ordnance Plant was constructed (during World War II). Whole townships may have been created since then. Often rural villages (both unincorporated and incorporated) often have vague and sprawling boundaries, take a village like Esmond, Illinois, the village has a total of about 300 people but covers 22 square miles of land. Google Maps takes a Vigo query closer to Terre Haute which is not surprising, considering the lack of what is generally widely available statistical data about Vigo. And though Terre Haute had a larger population in 1940 than it does now I would venture to guess that the area covered by the city has grown (the rise of modern subdivisions and suburbs being a post-WWII phenomenon) since the Vigo Plant existed. If you search "Pfizer Terre haute" on Google Maps it takes you to a large production facility which may well be the old Ordnance Plant (it almost has to be - as they are one and the same with the Pfizer facility recently closed and the only facility of its kind in TH that I am aware of). This, of course, is original research coupled with a healthy dose of speculation, I would imagine the people at Pfizer or the Vigo County Courthouse might have a better idea, I'll save that one for the book though I guess. --IvoShandor (talk) 08:18, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Cherry Springs State Park

To ease my pre-Super Bowl tension, I went ahead and used the NY Times resource to expand the Astronomy section. I like the way it looks so far, but am not sure where to place it. Another user suggests putting it in the recreation area. Upon reflection this seems like the best bet. It seems to be purely recreational astronomy going on there awyway. Thoughts? Rock, paper, hollow, shoot!

Sorry to hear you lost your rock. I hope I didn't jinx you. I am pretty sure I did. I've been thinking about hollows and how are they would be to photograph. My definition of a hollow is a small valley that is just barely wide enough to run a road through or smaller. Is the bird farm in the hollow or is the hollow in the background. A good example of a hollow would be Jack's Hollow. I am not sure how you could position to get a good picture of it, unless you want to climb to the top of the Arch Street Bridge, which I hear is slated to be replaced. Antarctic map

Thanks indeed for the map. I have decided not to clutter it with letter references; would it be possible just to add date information as follows?

• South Georgia: 20.11.22
• 118°E: 1.2.23
• 0°: 23.2.23
• S. Sandwich Is: 28.2.23

One of the main purposes of the map is to show that, for his return journey to 0° (the curved line), Captain Morrell's claimed voyage track was, for parts of the way at least, within the then undiscovered Antarctic coastline. His Enderby Land position was about 100 miles inland! At present, the curved line doesn't really indicate this; could the curve be straightened a little, to emphasise the "landward" nature of his claimed journey? A shallow curve to the Enderby position, followed by a straight line to 0°, might be the best way of doing this. I'm sorry to have to ask you to make these adjustments; perhaps I should have made the map's purpose clearer to begin with.
