I think I remember hearing about Plunketts Creek Township in Sullivan County. The reference looks like a great project, possible, for me to expand Sullivan County's history on wiki. The Masten article looks good too. I keep thinking about your note about the tree and the leaf. I'm not the greatest of photographers, but I have (IMO) a nice picture of the Forks of White Clay (Middle and West Branch) in the park in early morning — let me know if you'd like me to upload it. (This is directed at you, too, Dincher, since I know you're reading this.) I also have plans to work on overhauling Bellefonte Central Railroad; I have Bezilla & Rudnicki's book, and with that I think it has FA potential eventually. Best to you and Dincher. Oooh, that's a tricky one. The atlas shows the Cascade township spur as coming down from the S&EM entirely within Lycoming County. After some twisting and turning in which it runs generally southward, it splits in three at a point marked "Cascade"; one spur goes east into Sullivan, turns a horseshoe south, and gets back across the county line before ending; one spur runs a little ways south; and one runs some distance west and is marked "Salt Run". The text says only that the spur was built by Central Penna. Lumber in the 1920s (after they bought and standard-gauged the S&EM) and abandoned in 1930, and that is is "where the Cascade-Hillsgrove road is now". [1] captures part of the line; it looks like it came in too far north to reach Plunketts Creek proper. Choess 19:04, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

DYK for Kinzua Bridge?

I wrote an article for the Kinzua Bridge in my sandbox to nominate for DYK. Dincher suggested "...that Kinzua Bridge in Pennsylvania at Kinzua Bridge State Park was the world's largest and tallest railroad bridge at the time of it's construction in 1882." and said that I should run it by you. Thanks Ruhr, that photo was such great luck, I couldn't believe how stupid my luck was that day. I got this one in Pontiac, Illinois at the Pontiac City Hall and Fire Station, a site I haven't written up yet but that link will go from red to magic blue soon enough. I was touring part of U.S. Route 66 in Illinois and apparently there was a big Route 66 festival thing in Springfield, so everyone was driving there in their hopped up classic cars, it was pretty neat. Geobox 2 and rivers

{{Geobox2 news|2007-10-07}} Hi, I've updated the Geobox code and hopefully fixed all bugss you reported, please check here: User:Caroig/Plunketts Creek 2. Most locations and coordinates should get displyed OK now, the lines shouldn't be broken anymore (but IE is always full of surprises). The reference indexes aren't mixed anymore; it wasn't a bug but it was simply caused by the fact the Geobox 2 template orders some fields differently: the indexes were generated in the order they were entered in the page which was different from the diplay order of the new Geobox template. So one only needed to rearrange the fields in the text (there's an automated tool under development which does this among other fixes, however it doesn't support rivers yet). The only issue might be the split name, well, this is the way the Geobox 2 template works, to help anyone distinguish what's the proper name and what's a general word. The full name gets displayed in the article title, you might also want to use the official_name field of the Geobox. I would have forgotten, the mouth coordinates are now linked to the automated locator dot as requested (in all maps). FYI, instead of generating a new map you might have used the manual map_locator_x and map_locator_y fields of the Geobox to place a locator dot. Copy edit: Black Hawk War

Hey there Ruhr, hope things are well out in PA. I was wondering if you might lend your eye to Sinsinawa Mound raid and Plum River raid to provide a little outside copy editing assistance. I had put in a request with our usual copy editor Cricketgirl but she seems to be on a hiatus, I also requested from another user but it has been awhile for both and I haven't seen any response. Larrys Creek

Compared to today's FA Knights Templar, Larrys Creek takes a loooonngg time to load. This is probably because of the "convert" template. Re the preferred metric measure for land area: Supposedly the SI calls for km² to be used exclusively, and for any measures more than 250 acres I always use them. You're supposed to use square meters for less than a square km (although most of the SI purists here use 0.x km², at least down to 0.1 and then start using square meters.

I prefer hectares as the metric equivalent for the 2.4-250 acre range because I think people prefer measurement units that are (when a choice is available) easy to express in whole numbers for commonly-used small amounts of what's being measured. Square meters, like square feet, are better for interior area measurements where you're dealing with man-made level surfaces where "square" is intuitive. A square kilometer is a million square meters ... rather large to get a grasp on. I find 0.x decimal measures similarly ridiculous ... I can visualize a square kilometer better than, say, 0.7 km². The best argument there is that, in metric-using countries (i.e. most of the rest of the world), land in parcels smaller than that 1 km² is sold (usually) in hectares. (It's still used as the primary unit of measure for farmland).

Copyedit is mostly finished. I found a number of citations needed; I imagine you have them and it is just a matter of putting them where they belong. I took a lot of the bridge stuff out because it's in the bridge article now; one of those edits removed a ref which is sticking out later in the article.

Cogan House Covered Bridge

Wow! Great job. I didn't know the geobox could work for buildings too. You did that today? I may give you another barnstar.

I found that the free fields in the geobox could be used to add NRHP info (year added, ref #). We've been looking for solutions for how to handle RHPs and NHLs that are PAs, bridges, skyscrapers etc., where there's an established infobox for it already. This may well work.

I've added it to the bridges and NRHP projects. I will list it as a new article there (Consider joining WP:NRHP if you can do this sort of work on houses and other old buildings in your area of PA). Daniel Case 18:54, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

FL Main page proposal

You either nominated a WP:FLC or closed such a nomination this year. As such, you are the type of editor whose opinion I am soliciting. We now have over 400 featured lists and seem to be promoting in excess of 30 per month of late (41 in August and 42 in September). When Today's featured article (TFA) started (2004-02-22), they only had about 200 featured articles and were barely promoting 20 new ones per month. I think the quality of featured lists is at least as good as the quality of featured articles was when they started appearing on the main page. Thus, I am ready to open debate on a proposal to institute a List of the Day on the main page with nominations starting November 1 2007, voting starting December 1 2007 and main page appearances starting January 1 2008. For brevity, the proposal page does not discuss the details of eventual main page content, but since the work has already been done, you should consider this proposal assuming the eventual main page will resemble either an excerpted list format or an abbreviated text format. The proposal page does not debate whether starting with weekly list main page entries would be better than daily entries. However, I suspect persons in favor of weekly lists are really voicing opinions against lists on the main page since neither TFA nor Picture of the day started as weekly endeavors, to the best of my knowledge. Right now debate seems to be among support for the current selective democratic/consensus based proposal, a selective dictatorial approach like that used at WP:TFA or a non-selective first in line/calendar approach like that used at WP:POTD. Rain

Rain is measured in inches in the U.S. How is it measured in the rest of the world? I am working on Gorges State Park home to a temperate rain forest. Can't find this info. I am guessing that it could be measured in cm. Am I correct? Dincher 22:37, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

millimeters? Wow! I remember thinking that mm's were pretty much useless when I was in school. Only good for measuring tiny things. Why in the world would people want to measure rain in mm. Cogan House Covered Bridge

Great article! I found it very interesting to read. Perhaps one edit is needed in intro section: if it is the only bridge on the given creek, how is it one of a handful that survived a flood? You could clarify it is one of a handful of what, bridges anywhere in Pennsylvania, in the county, wherever you meant. Please visit List of covered bridges in New York and consider fixing up any of those, the articles sure need it and maybe the bridges are not all too far away for you. Battle of Bad Axe

Congrats your imperial majesty! Anyway, the Battle of Bad Axe is really progressing. I want to take it straight to the Military History WikiProject's A-class review. You might be happy to know that all of the battle articles that will appear on the map now have coordinates. They are exact as I think I can make them, most of them are spot on, a few are just in the general area of the battle, as that is as specific as the source material gets. Okay, I can see the confusion, I will try to clear it up point by point, but first let me say thank you for your excellent work, these catches are key.

• Neapope's speech was only in the morning in terms of time, it was between 1 am and 2 am, I will check the sources for exact times but "An hour or two after midnight" or some similar wording may work.
• Sources say a week, Dodge and Atkinson meet at Fort Blue Mounds and resupply during this time. The British Band was at the end of their road, starving, weak, and battle beaten, they made very slow progress over the rough terrain. Atkinson and Dodge's militia was well-fed, well-rested, and aggressively ready to pursue the Natives. Sources, thus imply, that they were able make progress much faster than Black Hawk's band. I suppose I will have to add the additional clarifying material for this to make sense. I was going to do this before and am not sure why I omitted the details. I will try to make doubly sure the timeline is correct, it could be that it was more like 4 or 5 days.
• Ah yes, the battle was ongoing for 30 minutes before Dodge came up with the center element.
• Most eyewitness accounts imply that many bodies were likely never found, many, many people drowned in the river fleeing the militia, others made it into the river only to be shot down as they crossed. Most of these bodies were probably never found.

Maybe a short mention, there is some discussion I have put in the article on Black Hawk, which I have done significant work on lately (over several weeks) too. It still needs expansion, there is a school of thought in scholarly circles concerning this war that the rise of Black Hawk's popularity and use of eponyms and other tributes is nothing more than subtle (some would say not so subtle) way to deny any guilt in the tragedy that befell the entire in Sac nation in time, and specifically that which befell the British Band, I am inclined to agree with some of this interpretation, and the research is valid, I think that a more in depth discussion is needed at Black Hawk's article, and then I will probably be able to add necessary information to both the Battle of Bad Axe, and the Black Hawk War article.

Incidentally, I still hate the organization of the main war article, it seems to choppy. While it lacks some key information, I think, on between the battles movements of key factions, and I realize this, the organization itself, even though I have changed it several times, is still bad. The info boxes were added per my request. I was doing them manually then saw that that guy was using a bot, so I requested the bot. The process of archiving a peer review request consists of three edits:

1. Remove the line transcluding the request from Wikipedia:Peer review#Requests.
2. Add the removed request from step 1) to the current archive (currently at Wikipedia:Peer review/October 2007‎).
3. Change the {{peerreview}} template on the article's talk page to {{oldpeerreview}} if necessary. Talk pages employing the {{ArticleHistory}} template or for requests originally made through a project peer review page will usually not need this step performed.

Thanks much for the confidence, and definitely no problem with you watching my talk page :-) As far as Tennessee: this Census document says that they're "Census County Divisions", similar to Alaska's census areas: no official governmental existence, just Census. It's as if the entire county is divided into CDPs, except they aren't, because Tennessee also has CDPs, and municipalities are part of the "CCDs". I too have found photos that way, that was where I went first, I am considering asking some other flickr users if they will release their photos, can't hurt anyway. As for Bad Axe, yeah, absolutely, but I still want to make those tweaks we talked about. I won't be editing as much, to reduce my wikistress levels, and my lashing out about things that normally don't bother me much. I intend to stick around though. A recent conflict at DYK and then a bunch of little things just piled up. Used NIST report for conversion of NGS data. NIST report was incorrect in conversion to kilometers, I appreciate you pointing that out. I will locate the NGS report again for you. West Branch Canal

Hi Ruhrfisch. It's time I said "hello". I see that you and Dincher, among others, have done a great deal of work on West Branch Susquehanna articles. My interest in the region has led me to work on the Lock Haven, Pennsylvania article, and one thing is leading to another. For the moment, I'm fixated on canals and trolleys. I've added trolley material to the Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania page, and yesterday I created my first new article, a stub on the West Branch Canal. Before I wrote this stub, none of the canal articles for Pennsylvania included the West Branch Division, and I thought that one should exist that people could link to. The next obvious step for me would be to create similar stubs with parallel titles for the Susquehanna Division and the North Branch Division. None exist in Wikipedia; the Main Line of Public Works page to which the West Branch is linked on some pages, does not include the West Branch Division or, for that matter, many other canals that were part of the Pennsylvania Canal system. (The map on the Main Line page includes the West Branch, but the West Branch was not part of the Main Line.) However, since I'm new on the scene here, I don't want to plunge forward too boldly and possibly make a mess. Have you any thoughts on the matter? Should I plunge ahead? I don't know whether it's customary to reply on your talk page or mine, but I thought if I posted here, you'd be sure to see it. Your two Lock Haven photos are just what the Lock Haven page needed, and I added them this morning. Thank you. I will indeed be bold and add more canal pages and data. The Shank book on canals has a lot of quantitative data about the whole Pennsylvania Canal system, and I think I can safely use some of it, with attribution, without violating copyright. I'm sure I can find other bits here and there at sites like that of the Muncy Historical Society. To answer your question about Clinton County history, yes and no. I grew up in and around Lock Haven, and I have a lot of memories and mental images of the place. None of that stuff in my head can be cited, but it helps me to know what to look for in the public records. I'm much more familiar with the southern part of the county than the northern. PA Townships

Thanks for your response, but one more question. Are PA Townships considered incorporated municipalities, or are they unincorporated areas with minor civil government? The articles are clear that NJ Townships are fully incorporated as any other municipality in the state, whereas Midwestern Townships are unincorporated subdivided areas of counties. • I do not know much about New Jersey. My understanding is that Pennsylvania's townships are incorporated municipalites. They elect their own supervisors, have their own budgets and zoning, and cannot be annexed by an adjoining city as can midwest townships.
