Photo Permission Issue: BOARDING, Judith Weinshall Liberman Wikipedia Page

Hi Ronhjones. My Wikipedia mentor, User:DESiegel, recommended that I reach out to you for help regarding a photo I'm trying to get approved for a page I have in draft mode: Draft: Judith Weinshall Liberman. You contacted me yesterday (2018-06-05) regarding my issue with uploading a photo called BOARDING for use on the Judith Weinshall Liberman Wikipedia page. She has given me written (via email) permission to use the photo as she is the artist and the owner of the photo. Ms. Weinshall Liberman is legally blind, so I'm trying to figure out how I can best do the legwork to get the photo on the page. I know you said that there is an 80-day wait time on photo approvals — is that always the case? Is there any way around that — as in, is there some way I can speed up the process? I'm a new Wikipedia editor and I'm considerably baffled by the entire photo permissions process — it's the most confusing part of Wikipedia editing, by far.

I've had email correspondence with Permissions-Wikipedia Commons regarding BOARDING, and this is the assigned ticket number: Ticket#2018060710000077 If you get a free minute, can you please take a look at my correspondence with them to see what, if anything, can be done to get a speedy approval to use the image? I created my first Wikipedia page, Holocaust Wall Hangings a few months ago and didn't run into an issue with any of the photos on that page, so I'm unsure what I've done wrong this time around.

Please advise and thank you very much for your time. George David NH (talk) 03:14, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

@George David NH:Oooooh, what a tangled web we weave... There were so many open tickets (I found 13) on your e-mail address (I hope I've found them all!) As they were all open - the images have not yet been approved. I've grabbed ownership of the earliest one (2018041410007775) and merged all the others into it (so grabbing ownership from the one that did get answered). A quick look has given me some ideas, I need to read through all the tickets this evening (it's 1pm now, and I'm off out) and come up with a plan. I'll e-mail you tonight. Ronhjones  (Talk) 12:01, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

Oh yes, a tangled web I have certainly woven! How I've gotten things so jumbled up with my quest to find photo permission is one of life's great mysteries. I'm doing my best to figure out the uploading/approval process, and will eventually nail it so this doesn't happen with future articles. Thank you very much for taking the time to look into the situation and help me through it. I really appreciate it. George David NH (talk) 12:42, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

{{tps}} To add to the web, there are several other uploads to commons that are not tagged with OTRS templates (but whose license/source details are equivalent to the others that are). I'm not currently an OTRS agent to be able to help further. DMacks (talk) 13:00, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

Sent you an email just now, but I'll post it here, too.

Thank you very much for doing some detective work for me (and for having a sense of humor). I appreciate that. I do need to give you a very long spade because if you have time to assist me, I need one more round of help/input/dirt digging. I'm not concerned about any of the Holocaust Wall Hanging photo submissions as I created that page and made it live a few months ago. All I'm trying to accomplish is to get clearance to post BOARDING. I'd like to use it on a page I'm creating that's currently in draft mode: Judith Weinshall Liberman. Judith Weinshall Liberman owns both the BOARDING artwork and photo, and has given me written permission via email to post it — and I believe that I followed the submission request steps that permissions require. Ms. Liberman is 89 years old and legally blind, so I'm acting as her representative. The information below applies to the painting that Ms. Liberman and I are trying to post (thanks for your research):

BOARDING (HOLOCAUST PAINTING).jpg (in e-mail under a few names) File:Boarding - Scenes of the Holocaust.jpg (commons, del) File:Boarding.jpg (commons, del) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Boarding-_Holocaust_Paintngs.jpg (fair use - and my bot has reduced it)

I'm unsure why permissions is not allowing me to use the BOARDING photo. Any additional help would be great. And appreciated. And I'd owe you one.

Note 1: I'm also posting the photos "Fire by Judith Weinshall Liberman.jpg" and "Judith Weinshall Liberman.png" (is this the portrait you're referring to?) on the Judith Weinshall Liberman page. I've coded these photos on the page and as of yet, they have not been removed. Note 2: Can you go to Draft: Judith Weinshall Liberman and see what the photo statuses look like? Note 3: Carla Jones is Judith Weinshall Liberman's website admin so that's probably how her name got involved in all of this. She has nothing to do with the current situation. George David NH (talk) 19:50, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

Do you think we should just delete all the earlier tickets and start over again, submitting new permissions from Ms. Liberman to use "BOARDING," "FIRE," and her portrait? That way it will be on one ticket. What do you think? George David NH (talk) 19:59, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

@George David NH:. Glad the e-mail arrived...
  1. None of the photos has an approved OTRS ticket, expect them to start vanishing at any time! There are a lot of photos on commons, and only a lowly few admins (ca. 250), but they will get there eventually, and commons is much more ruthless than here... There is probably a time counter on unapproved commons OTRS tickets - probably set to 90 days before it drops the photo into a category for overdue OTRS - I know the system here is the same - but the en-wiki permission queue is 149 days!
  2. Quite some time ago, permissions stopped allowing forwarded e-mails. They must come directly from the copyright holder to OTRS.
  3. c:File:Judith Weinshall Liberman.png is the problem. It's obviously not a selfie, so we need the permission from whoever took the image, or a copy of the written transfer of copyright from the photographer.
  4. It's all on one ticket now. They were all merged onto 2018041410007775, they don't get deleted, adding more tickets will add more confusion, and you will still get the same issues.
Hope that all makes sense. Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:29, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

Thank you very much. 1. I'll contact Weinshall Liberman as well as Carla Jones who may be able to assist with this. 2. Are you the one who merged them all on one ticket (2018041410007775) or was that done by OTRS? 3. What does OTRS stand for? I think knowing that may help me. You've been great! I really appreciate your help. George David NH (talk) 01:38, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

  1. Yes, I merged them based on all the tickets I could find with the same e-mail address - 2018041410007837, 2018041910015721, 2018050110006119, 2018050110006146, 2018050110006155, 2018060610000319, 2018060610000337, 2018060610000471, 2018060610000481, 2018060610012155, 2018060710000077 - all now part of 2018041410007775. When a new e-mail arrived it is given a new ticket number and waits in the queue for someone to action it. If there is "[Ticket#<number>]" in the subject then it will add it to that e-mail train, and notify the ticket owner by e-mail.

Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:26, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

Great. I'm beginning to understand all of this. I checked out the ORTS page and that's all making sense, too. Thanks again for your help. George David NH (talk) 01:13, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

Good afternoon Ronhjones. I'm pretty much done writing the Wikipedia article Draft:Judith Weinshall Liberman and would like to make it live. I have not yet heard from anyone at en-wiki permissions — am I really looking at a possible 149 days for photo approval as you mentioned earlier? What I'm most confused about was the speed in which I was allowed to post images on Holocaust Wall Hangings (about a week) but in the case of this page, it may take around 149 days - and all the photos for this page come from the same source (Weinshall Liberman) as those at Holocaust Wall Hangings. To possibly speed up the process, Weinshall Liberman has provided me with a candid photo of her taken by her daughter — not a professional photographer. I submitted a request to use that freely licensed photo a few days ago. So is there a way I can post the images on Draft:Judith Weinshall Liberman and make the article live while noting somewhere that the photos are in a queue for acceptance with en-wiki permissions? Do I have to wait 5 months before I can launch the page? That doesn't make sense to me. Please advise. George David NH (talk) 21:11, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

@George David NH: If her daughter has taken a photo then she needs to upload it, otherwise we join the OTRS merry-go-round. No it won't be 149 days, because I merged all the tickets, so now they are all mine. But we cannot move forward until an e-mail arrives direct from Ms Liberman to OTRS - that's the rule - "no forwarded e-mails will be acceptable". Nothing will happen until that e-mail arrives (except eventually the images will get deleted as "OTRS no permission"). I refer you back to my suggestions in the e-mail. Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:07, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back to me and bearing with me. I'm trying to do this all on my own but I don't always understand what you're instructing me to do because I'm not yet familiar with some of the terminology. If you can walk me through the process a bit more, I should be able to move along without guidance on my next article. I think what you're saying is this: I need to contact Weinshall Liberman's daughter and have her contact OTRS directly stating that she gives permission to use the photo that she took as well as have her upload that photo to that email, and I also need to contact Weinshall Liberman and have her contact OTRS so she can directly give permission to use the photos BOARDING and Fire. Questions:

1. How do they contact OTRS (what email address)? permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, correct?
2. Is there a form or format they should use when giving their consent and if so, where do I find it?
3. Include ticket# you created for me in email subject line, correct?
4. How will we know when we've been given the approval to post the photos? Will we be contacted by OTRS? George David NH (talk) 22:31, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
@George David NH:
1. If the daughter took the photo, and she uploads it - she is the copyright holder and (normally) needs do no more. Her uploading the image and applying the license is enough permission. Note it all goes bad if that photo has been uploaded anywhere on the internet before uploading on Wikimedia.
2. The form is at c:COM:CONSENT or I can send a filled in one to her direct (I've seen her address in the e-mails) to just approve - remember there are more than two images at stake.
3. Any e-mail should have [Ticket#:2018041410007775] in the subject line.
4. When approved an e-mail will be sent.
Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:45, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

The photo her daughter took has been used here: https://www.law.uchicago.edu/news/judith-weinshall-liberman-54-life-art so I hope that isn't an issue. Part of the problem with getting permissions is that Weinshall Liberman lives alone and is legally blind and can hardly read anything on the computer. So having her fill these things out or handle anything on her end is tricky. I'll keep you posted how this all goes. Thank you very much! George David NH (talk) 23:24, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

@George David NH:Sad... Never upload an image anywhere if you want to upload it on commons. The first thing that commons editors do is a google image search. As soon as they find a match, it will get a copyright violation notice and be gone in less than an hour. She will have to use c:COM:CONSENT. As for the others, that is why I said I would send her a pre-filled form to just approve. Ronhjones  (Talk) 00:28, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

I sent Weinshall Liberman the pre-filled form created at Commons:Email templates/Consent and I'm having her daughter choose a photo of her that has never been used online — for any reason. Your input is very helpful. George David NH (talk) 01:18, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:McPherson-K.-Ken-1957-581.jpg

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:McPherson-K.-Ken-1957-581.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:41, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

Length of video

There is no length requirement at Wikipedia:Non-free content. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 01:30, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

Generally the same as audio Wikipedia:Non-free_content#Audio_clips Ronhjones  (Talk) 01:34, 17 June 2018 (UTC)
A song is four minutes long, so 30 seconds is a substantial portion. Comparing it to a video that is less than 1% of a film is invalid. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 05:43, 17 June 2018 (UTC)
There are plenty of 8-12 minute songs, they all are limited to 30 sec. NFC must be minimal WP:NFCCP3b. Ronhjones  (Talk) 14:03, 17 June 2018 (UTC)
Anyway a four minute song is limited 24 seconds. Ronhjones  (Talk) 01:47, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

How to mark Orphaned non-free revisions template as "reviewed"?

I uploaded an album cover which was bot-reduced to <100,000 pixels, leaving an "Orphaned non-free revisions" template. RonBot flagged that template for human review ("human=yes"). I believe that the reduced version does the job, so that the original, over-large version should be deleted. How do I update so that original version does get deleted? Thanks. --Hobbes Goodyear (talk) 09:57, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

@Hobbes Goodyear: RonBot is a little fussy (it was asked to be...). The last two edits need to be "upload the new version" and "add reduce template", if someone makes a small edit after that, it will abort with "manual review" - those files appear in the admin's deletion "to do" list and get done in 24h. Ronhjones  (Talk) 12:17, 18 June 2018 (UTC)
Gotcha. Thanks very much. --Hobbes Goodyear (talk) 22:37, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

Free use

Hi, you deleted "File:Blood Swept Lands And Seas Of Red 9 Aug 2014.JPG" on the grounds of "no free use rationale". I have little interest in becoming a copyright lawyer, so could you just tell me: in your opinion, would it have been possible to give a valid free use rationale for this image? If so, could you restore the image so that we can have a go? Thx, W. P. Uzer (talk) 14:53, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

@W. P. Uzer: It questionable. One of the key arguments is "replaceability" - I think even with a proper filled in WP:FURG, that someone is going to question the replaceable aspect - there are too many images at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=tower+of+london+poppy&title=Special:Search&profile=advanced&fulltext=1&ns6=1, which might be described as a replacement, unless there is some particular aspect of this image which makes it very unique - that would have to be elaborated in the fair use template. Note the discussion at Wikipedia:Files_for_discussion/2018_May_17#File:Blood_Swept_Lands_And_Seas_Of_Red_9_Aug_2014.JPG said that it could only be used on one page First World War centenary. I'll restore it for now, add a blank template for you to fill in - do make sure the replaceable field is good - start "No," and then explain why. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:33, 18 June 2018 (UTC)
Remember to add it to the page First World War centenary, or the bot will find it and tag it as orphaned. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:35, 18 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your help :) I've done my best to complete the rationale, I think the commons images are not valid replacements as they tend to get deleted (presuambly because they are not valid for free use, so the same would apply to any other similar image). Please let me know if you think more arguments should be added. W. P. Uzer (talk) 05:07, 19 June 2018 (UTC)
@W. P. Uzer: I gave it a little tweak, just to be more explicit. We'll see how it goes. Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:21, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Ronbot malfunction

Ron,

Your bot Ronbot doesn't seem to be working properly. It put in this after I twice already reviewed the file as a human and didn't find any issues. Can you please help out?

Thank you in advance. Snuggums (talk / edits) 02:12, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

@SNUGGUMS: I think I will have to change the title - I didn't set that bit up, it processes all files that need a revision delete, and if it does not like what it finds, it adds "manual review" - then it's down for an admin to do the revdel manually (or not) and remove the template. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:07, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
Added the word "admin" to the banner - see here for example. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:17, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
OK that helps, and I'm glad that it now feels satisfied with the file when its old revision is gone. Snuggums (talk / edits) 16:48, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

File_talk:DavidDorward2018.jpg

you just g8'd File_talk:DavidDorward2018.jpg, was that a misclick or something? The file's still there and judging by the contents of the deleted talk page, the author sent in the consent form to OTRS meaning it's likely we don't actually need to delete anything (though if we do, we should delete the file first and not just the talk page surely). 78.28.45.127 (talk) 22:26, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

Check again - the file is on commons, not en-wiki - the en-wiki page is just a "window" to the commons image. The File Talk page is at c:File_talk:DavidDorward2018.jpg, not File_talk:DavidDorward2018.jpg Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:29, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
Anything relevant to the deletion should go on c:Commons:Deletion requests/File:DavidDorward2018.jpg Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:31, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
it's not uncommon to discuss issues with a file specific to a given wiki on the file's local talk and not on commons but I'll let it go as I obviously didn't come here because of the page but because of the lost help request posted on it... which I can see you're now addressing on the user's talk page so it's all good. Thank you. 78.28.45.127 (talk) 22:43, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

Disruptive edits by recently blocked IP, block evasions, etc.

67.162.86.219 (talk · contribs) was recently blocked by yourself for disruptive edits. As soon as the block expired the account went back to making the same edits.

It's obvious to assume this is the same user. I assume this is a user who is alternating between a mobile network/device and a Wi-Fi connection/computer. They all need to be blocked immediately for disruptive editing and block evasion. R9tgokunks 21:35, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

@DoRD:, the IP 67.162.86.219 (talk · contribs) needs to be blocked again as well. It's the same user making the same edits as the mobile IPs. They recently were blocked for this but don't seem to have learned anything. R9tgokunks 22:06, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
FYI R9tgokunks, those aren't mobile IPs, they're a Comcast cable connection, and almost certainly the same connection as the IPv4 address. I've given both 67.162.86.219 and 2601:249:8300:62B1::/64 short blocks, but any admin should feel free to extend them if warranted. —DoRD (talk) 22:13, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

I received your bot's message about File:Shawinigan High School Logo 2018.jpg I understand your policy concerns, but the logo already looks bad because of JPEG artefacts and is not suitable for use in print. Shrinking it would only make it worse. Eastmain (talkcontribs) 18:10, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

@Eastmain: Wait and see what it looks like when reduced. It should not be suitable for use in print - it's a non-free file and it's allowed use is only on the article page - if the appearance of the article is virtually unchanged then we have achieved the purpose. The image pages of non-free files are not indexed, so no-one will be looking for a print version here. Ronhjones  (Talk) 18:17, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

@FlightTime: RonBot only removes succession boxes from music articles - i.e. they have a infobox album, infobox song or infobox single. (Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/RonBot 5), and no other infobox. This has "Infobox musical artist" so is therefore not being done. Your watchlist should go quiet, All the current pages have been sorted out. Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:24, 26 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanx for the explanation, wasn't complaining about the flood, just noting how busy your bot has been. Cheers, - FlightTime (open channel) 20:26, 26 June 2018 (UTC)

Possible Sock Puppet

Hello,

I see you blocked 86.99.216.50 earlier. I think there is another IP address being used as a possible sock puppet (86.99.21.159) as they've both edited on 2019 Pakistan Super League and have made similar edits.

Please return the deleted revision of File:Anti-Duhring (German edition).gif, now converted to PD. Will transfer to Commons after that. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 00:34, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

@Finnusertop:  Done. What License do you plan to use on commons? You will need the death date for the {{PD-old-100}} and a US license, or change it to {{PD-old-100-1923}} (if death date known) or {{PD-old-assumed}} as it's more than 120 years old (those templates only on commons, hence red links). Ronhjones  (Talk) 12:19, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
{{PD-old-100-1923}}. Engels died in 1895. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 12:25, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
Actually, just I was about to transfer, I noticed this was on Commons under the same file name but deleted. Seeing that you're a Commons admin, can you return c:File:Anti-Duhring_(German_edition).gif so that I can fix the license tag there and mark now-commons here? Sorry for the extra trouble. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 12:40, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
@Finnusertop: Commons was tiny version - looked like copy of reduced en version. Restored and temp renamed commons file, transferred en-file to commons with FTCG, then deleted small restored one as a duplicate. All yours Ronhjones  (Talk) 13:01, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

RonBot

Hey Ronhjones! Hope you are well. I was wondering what you thought about an exclusion for RonBot Task #3 for files that are nominated for deletion. File:ViktorSotnikov.jpg would be an example of a file the bot would skip. This is to avoid supplementary messages regarding files that will likely end up being deleted anyway - what do you think? Thanks. Jon Kolbert (talk) 17:41, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

@Jon Kolbert: I did think of that before the bot approval (when I was tagging them all manually). I decided against it:
  1. Some people upload a very big file. So we end up hosting a large non-free image for a week or more while the di/ffd/csd/appeals takes their course - I thought that was probably not a good idea, we should not host oversized images once discovered.
  2. If the file subsequently stays, then the image is reduced already.
  3. There are only an average of 70 new files a day, it takes DatBot6/RonBot2/RonBot4 (jpg.png/gif/svg) about 10 secs to reduce and upload a reduced image, so there nothing really to be saved - if they were all done manually - different story. The ones for manual reduce (tif/pdf/etc) are unlikely to be done before the deletion process ends, and if someone is doing them they will see the notice when they look at the page.
Ronhjones  (Talk) 18:46, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
No worries, that's a pretty good rationale. Jon Kolbert (talk) 18:52, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

Bot question

Shouldn't {{Non free image to be reduced}} be substituted? Most templates that go on user talk pages are. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 03:24, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

@Pppery: I've no idea. Is there a rule somewhere? It certainly never got mentioned in the Bot Approval. I always assumed that subst was done to "lock in" the message, where the message had the possibility to change in the future. I wrote the template just for the bot to add, and no plans to change it. Ronhjones  (Talk) 12:12, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
According to Wikipedia:Substitution, all templates in Category:User warning templates should be substituted. Although {{Non-free image to be reduced}} isn't currently in that category, it should be. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 12:40, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
@Pppery:No problem, it's only a tiny fix to the code. Ronhjones  (Talk) 13:02, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
And meanwhile I've moved it to add a hyphen between non and free, for consistency with Template;Non-free use rationale, Template:Non-free logo, and other such templates. The bot may or may not need to be updated. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 21:41, 29 June 2018 (UTC)
@Pppery: Changed the bot code, no point calling a redirect. Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:49, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

RonBot 5 6/30 run

Hello: Only one succession box was picked up in the latest run, so it seems that all have been removed. That one however was not actually a record chart box, but one for Grammy awards.[11] A 6/23 run also removed it, but was reverted by a user on 6/29. I think these can be fixed manually, but I left it as is for now.

On a separate note, the merger with Template:Audio sample, Template:Extra music sample, and Template:Audiosample isn't making much progress. Besides manual fixes,[12] can a bot help move this along? —Ojorojo (talk) 15:28, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

@Ojorojo: Unless you can give me some criteria to identify that box, not to be removed, then it will do it again next week. Other than that the choices are...
  1. Add {{Nobots|deny=RonBot}} to the top of the article page, the bot will never edit the page - small issue there, if someone adds anther succession box.
  2. We add a hidden command to the wanted succession box, and I'll tweak the code to check for it.
What do you think?
As for the second query - Maybe soon, once I've completed Wikipedia:Bot_requests#WP:RESTRICT_archive_botRonhjones  (Talk) 16:25, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
I'd say add "deny". If more come up (Euro song contest winners, etc.), then maybe tweak. —Ojorojo (talk) 16:33, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
@Ojorojo:OK - fixed page with "nobots". If we see more boxes needed to be kept then maybe we can work out a system. Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:03, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC about the deletion of drafts closed with a consensus to change the wording of WP:NMFD. Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus that the {{promising draft}} template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.

Technical news

  • Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
  • Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon () in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates.
  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June). This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.

Miscellaneous

  • Currently around 20% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 17% a year ago. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless if you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Ronbot July 2018

Your bot left a message on my talk page. I disagree with what it is intending to do, because what I did was simply widen an image so that it approximated a 16:9 aspect ratio. Previously, the screenshot was squished, and I was just trying to fix that. The image is still the same height as it was before, and I do not think it needs to be made any smaller. If any automatic action could be prevented, that would be nice. Ideally, we would have a perfect 16:9 screenshot there, but I'm not an expert at resizing that. I wanted to give you a heads up that G3 specifically excludes articles about hoaxes such as Hook Island Sea Monster. I'm not going to contest it since the AFD was going that way anyway, but I just want to make sure we're doing things the right way as we sift through the sillier corners of the 'pedia. Let me know if you feel otherwise, I'm happy to discuss. Thanks –dlthewave 02:29, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

To delete a draft

I was created this draft to add information of a popular folk singer of Bangladesh named Sultana Yeasmin Laila who is a winner of a popular reality show named closeup1. So I wanted to publish the article via draft validation. but it is a matter of sorrow that (202.125.65.146) user have deleted this content and removed from submission. As a volunteer we need inspiration, hope none of expected such kind of behavior. There is no benefit to me and this person is not related to me. I had done this job as a voluntary work. For this why I have created and publish it again to make wikipedia more informative about her. This job has done before your declined the request made by the (202.125.65.146) user. Still makes no sense I'm afraid... GiantSnowman 18:19, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: We are comparing two lists.
  1. List of all players (~160,000 titles)
  2. List of all players with a position (~113,000 titles)
Which will generate a list (Category:Association footballers not categorized by position). But list 1 also has articles which are not about one player (see User:S.A. Julio/sandbox) - there is no easy way to get just the list of players. So to prevent these pages being added to Category:Association footballers not categorized by position, we need an exclusion list (Category:Association football player support pages) Ronhjones  (Talk) 18:45, 16 July 2018 (UTC)

File issue

Unrelated to the other discussion, but as you are familiar with files I thought maybe you'd be the one to ask. File:Serie A logo (2018).png seems to be transparent on the file page, but shows up with a white background on Serie A. I tried to make an adjustment to see if it would fix the file, but somehow a red background then appeared (though only on the article and in the file history, but if you click on the image to view it looks normal). Any idea what the issue is? Thanks, S.A. Julio (talk) 07:21, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

@S.A. Julio: There is a mix of transparent background and a white border. You "red" one shows what the transparent part covers. I've put it into PhotoShop and used the "Magic Eraser" to remove the big white border, so the transparent part in now bigger. Uploaded, it looks OK. Ronhjones  (Talk) 14:39, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Washington Redskins uniforms

File:Washington Redskins uniforms.png

"No valid reason for large image. "portion" does not count. If it is so small then it should be on commons as "De minimis"."

c:Commons:Deletion requests/File:Redskins uniforms12.png

The Indian does not qualify as DM because the Indian is a vital part of the image (no matter how small). The rest of uniform is not copyrightable (utilitarian object, this particular depiction was released with Creative Commons license), except for the Indian. The Indian is already tiny on the full version. We can't separate the copyrighted Indian from the rest of the image, so we should follow the spirit of Wikipedia:Non-free content#Image resolution: the copyrighted part should be under 0.1 megapixels. There is no reason to scale down Creative Commons content. Alexis Jazz (talk) 21:28, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

@Alexis Jazz: The whole image is under a non-free rationale. Therefore as per NF policy the only use of the image is in the article - unless you are showing the images at a bigger size in the article, there is no reason to have it oversized. There are plenty of these sports uniforms in non-free, and as far as I know they have all been set to the guideline size. Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:39, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
I made a compromise. The copyrighted portion is from the scaled down image. Not the whole image is under a non-free rationale, only the logo. Alexis Jazz (talk) 21:46, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: We have thousands of NF images with only a portion of NF content - it's no different to that. I remind you that NF images are meant to be viewed only on the article. If we can't agree we'll have to go to FFD. Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:09, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
Having a larger version is useful. If you click the uniforms in the article, the image viewer opens and shows the Creative Commons licensed uniforms with more detail. If I selected the wrong license or tags, please tell me. I don't know everything. If you want to create a file discussion that's also okay for me. But it sounds like Wikipedia is following the letter of Wikipedia:Non-free content#Image resolution instead of the spirit. "We have thousands of NF images" sounds not very different from "Over 1 million copies sold!" and that never convinced me to buy anything. Alexis Jazz (talk) 22:24, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: We never go measuring the NF part to the non-NF part. We haven't a million yet, only 600,000 NF images, there will be a good proportion with what one might call a "free part", that's just the way it is. The NF policy specifically says "Non-free content is allowed only in articles", the fact that you can click to the image page is just a necessary action - there are plenty of editors who would like the NF image to be the same as size used in the article. The license is OK {{Non-free sports uniform}}, and the image is therefore set as non-free. Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:48, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
I don't mean the image page, I mean the Media Viewer. Different thing. In this case almost the entire image is free, only a tiny bit is copyrighted. The resolution rules are there to ensure beyond what is required by law that Wikipedia doesn't exceed what fair use allows. The rule was made to make sure no commercial exploitation of movie posters, covers, photos, etc would be harmed. The tiny Indian logo on the uniforms is, beyond any doubt, fair use. No need to scale down the entire image for that. "that's just the way it is" is just another argument that never convinced me of anything. Alexis Jazz (talk) 23:03, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
@Alexis Jazz: The Media Viewer is not a proper view place for non-free images - only the article is that place. Ronhjones  (Talk) 23:26, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Deleted article

Hi Mr. Ronhjones, I'd like to ask you if I can see or edit the content of a deleted page. I plan to clean it up -if needed- and restore it. The article is this one: [34]. You answered me in my talk page previously, but I don't use email. Could you paste the content in a sandbox? Thank you very much, so sorry for the trouble. Lynxavier (talk) 19:48, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

@Lynxavier: <removed link> - let me know when you have downloaded it, and I'll kill the link. Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:59, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
I got it ok. Thank you very much Sir. Much appreciated. Lynxavier (talk) 20:07, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

How to use File:Ben-Gurion University of Negev.svg in other Wikipedia?

Hello, could you help me? How do I use the Ben-Gurion University of Negev.svg image in my language (Portuguese) wikipedia? Thank you very much in advance. Tiago Neves (talk) 14:36, 20 July 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tiago de Jesus Neves (talkcontribs)

@Tiago de Jesus Neves: That file is allowed on en-wiki as a non-free image. Checking m:Non-free_content - it does not look like Portuguese wiki allows that use. Check out pt:Wikipédia:Conteúdo_restrito Ronhjones  (Talk) 16:31, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Further Requests for Page Protection

Thank you very much for page-protecting those articles from that IP-hopping vandal. Would it be at all possible if I could ask you protect these other pages that the vandal loves haunting, too? Turtle-jawed moa-nalo, New Caledonian ground dove, Scarlett's shearwater‎, and Palaeoloxodon mnaidriensis? Thank you very much for your time.--Mr Fink (talk) 22:26, 18 July 2018 (UTC)

@Apokryltaros: I seem to have beat you to it, just one was not done, it is now. It sometimes is the only way for the IP hoppers. After the 1 month semi, it will drop down to pending changes. Should make the IPs very happy... ;-) Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:30, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
Very much so, and thank you again for all your help.--Mr Fink (talk) 00:02, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
Also, you don't suppose you could restore semi-protection to Chatham raven, so that our IP-hopper won't get to enjoy a respite?--Mr Fink (talk) 14:44, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

I'm not an expert on IPv6 ranges - but it looks like too big a range to easily block. I'll stick to block and protect for now. Ronhjones  (Talk) 01:10, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
Understood.--Mr Fink (talk) 01:23, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Punjab Railway

Hello Ronhjones. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Punjab Railway, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: This page pre-dates the linked page, which is a copy of this one. See https://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Punjaub_Railway&action=history . Thank you. Shirt58 (talk) 02:25, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Ron.
I think I may have made a rather large mistake here. This article was created by PAKHIGHWAY (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log). Looking at the broader context, it would appear that this blocked user has created a number of articles that plagiarised the wiki of "Families In British India Society" website. I note that the wiki in question states only that the images on its site are under a creative commons licence, not its text.
Given the above, I have no wheel-war - WP:MOPFIGHT, what a cleverly titled re-direct! - type objections whatsoever should you chose delete the page yourself, or re-nominate it for deletion. I will nominate it under the WP:G5 criterion once I have finished typing this.
Pete AU aka --Shirt58 (talk) 09:31, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
Hi, the wiki has copied the articles from Wikipedia so it is not copyright, thanks Atlantic306 (talk) 11:36, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
@Shirt58 and Atlantic306: See User_talk:TonyBallioni#copyvios_(train_articles) Ronhjones  (Talk) 13:46, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
@Atlantic306:It is probably limited to whatever PAKHIGHWAY added. I've not had the time for an in-depth look yet. Ronhjones  (Talk) 14:13, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

Pending Protection Query

Hi,

I've just been handling a few pending changes and one was on Nika Futterman. The reason given for pending-protection was sock-puppetry. Assuming a lack of reviewers ability to identify similar IPs etc I just was wondering what the reason was for putting it on pp rather than semi-protect. I can think of a couple of reasons (all sockpuppet vandalism has been very similar etc) but was wanting to check - all my RPP requests etc have been in clear-cut cases, and so I was just intrigued to expand that somewhat primordial knowledge a little.

Cheers for your time.

Nosebagbear (talk) 20:20, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

@Nosebagbear: No idea. Could have gone either way I suspect. Result of report at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism&diff=prev&oldid=735312061 and the result https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism&diff=next&oldid=735317936, Was quite a long time ago. If it happened toady, more likely a different outcome. Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:28, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Hercules Engine Company, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Canton (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver).

@DVdm:. Sadly, you are probably correct. I'm always reluctant to start protecting talk pages. But it may be the only way. Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:43, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
Duh, here we go already. - DVdm (talk) 21:47, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
@DVdm: IP blocked. Resolved to New York University. More likely will be quiet until that block ends. If that IP does it again, I'll go for a longer schoolblock. Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:55, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

URGENT Protected edit request on 27 July 2018

Hi ronhjones, Thank you for the speedy protection on List of fastest-selling products (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) However, the page was vandalised before you protected it and I am now unable to revert the changes. Would it be possible to revert to the changes I made on the page at 00:26, 27 July 2018 and not the changes I made at 00:32, 27 July 2018‎? Unnecessary information with no valid sources were added and I was battling with persistent IP vandalisers beforehand. So sorry for the trouble but it would be greatly appreciated! Cynicalcynical (talk) 01:05, 27 July 2018 (UTC)=

@Cynicalcynical: Slipped it in when I wasn't looking... Fixed. Ronhjones  (Talk) 01:11, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

Thank you so much, @Ronhjones: that was very quick! However, sorry to be a huge pain but it would be possible to revert it to the one of the earlier edits instead such as the one at 00:26, 27 July 2018‎ or 00:25, 27 July 2018‎? It's just that in the midst of trying to revert it back myself I accidentally reverted to one of the vandalised ones.Cynicalcynical (talk) 01:18, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

@Cynicalcynical: Know what you mean, when there is more than one, you cannot keep pace. Been there myself. Ronhjones  (Talk) 16:28, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for fixing it @Ronhjones: It's much appreciated! Cynicalcynical (talk) 18:58, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

@Cynicalcynical: No problem. Just remember to get some consensus for the page content by 00:35, 27 August 2018! :-) Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:15, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

Of course, will do! Cynicalcynical (talk) 19:25, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

Fastest sold out concerts vandalism by cynicalcynical Exofacts (talk) 03:46, 28 July 2018 (UTC)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fastest-selling_products#Concerts

Hello Sir,

User cynicalcynical has made you protect the WRONG version of the concert section, she completed erased the correct concerts which were of KPOP bands EXO and TVXQ just so she can add her favorite group BTS which should not even be in there because the sources are invalid and the time is specified as "number of minutes."

The old version with the EXO concerts had the legit sources, it was talked about world wide and made known in KOREA by the ticketing company that they sold out their concerts that fast (0.2 seconds) I put in a request to edit them back to the same page. Please change it back to its original facts and do not let users cynicalcynical and babytaeyong put out the WRONG facts onto your page, It is vandalism.

Hello. User cynicalcynical made you protect the wrong version of the concert section. Right order is: 1, EXO - ElyXiOn [dot] that sold out in 0.2 seconds (2018) 2, EXO - ElyXiOn (2017) that sold out in 0.2 seconds 3, EXO - EXO'luXion (2015) that sold out in 0.4 seconds 4, EXO - The Lost Planet (2014) that sold out in 0.4 seconds 5, TVXQ - TVXQ Live Tour 2012 'Tone' Concert at Tokyo Dome that sold out within 5 seconds https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DjJs490UwAANoLU.jpg

I know you ask for source, but you can google it and you will find it, its so much, and even if this you have protected were correct, please put them in correct order https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DjJs3d7VAAQfOzR.jpg <-- is not correct nor in correct order — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lost Angel MDKD (talkcontribs) 11:17, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

Pages are protected after severe edit-warring. The content of the page should then be discussed on the talk page, to be ready to change to an agreed version when protection ends. Wikipedia pages are constructed by consensus - talk to the other editors. Ronhjones  (Talk) 11:25, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

Michael Lohan Jr.

I don't believe I should've been blocked for my latest post on Michael Lohan Jr. because I included IMDb in the external links for information on other pages, and never had this happen before. Some wikipedia page examples were from Lynne Naylor, Nate Cash, and William Reiss. If Michael Lohan Jr. isn't the reason, please let me know the real reason why I was blocked. That way, I can know what I did wrong. Yes, Robvanvee warned me that I'd be blocked without further notice for adding unsourced material. But, letting me know directly what I did wrong is important so I can have my saying on the matter, whether I'm right in my response or not.

@MapleTreeXZ: Looking back, I can see there was no in-line reference against the birthdate, as is required for a BLP. Also note that IMDb is not regarded as a reliable source - anyone can suggest an edit and most are accepted without checking (I've done it myself). As you had received a level 4 warning, then SummerPhDv2.0 filed a report at WP:AIV to gain an admin's attention. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:30, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

University of Michigan seal

Hi Ron, would you be able to revert to the last version dated 22:06, September 4, 2017 at File:University of Michigan seal.svg or send me an email of that version? I have someone telling me the current version is inaccurate and I can't remember what the version looks like. The one thing I do know is where I retrieved the September 2017 version from. Thanks, Corky 04:26, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

@Corkythehornetfan: Sent zip file of all 6 by e-mail Ronhjones  (Talk) 14:01, 30 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you! Corky 14:48, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for the note, Ron. Some follow-up information and questions.

1. Regarding photos I own, two kinds: 1) photos I took personally and 2) photos taken for my company as work made-for-hire, where my company owns the content (for example, a frame a video from a film produced by me but shot by a cinematographer in my employ). In both cases, the photos already appear on my company website or in my social media feeds, because I own them and have placed them there for marketing purposes. I should be able to use both kinds on Wikipedia, yes?

2. Regarding photos owned by my subject, two kinds: photos he's taken personally of old newspaper articles in which he appears and 2) photos from public performances or appearances from his personal archives that were gifted to him by fans from around the world (some of these photos date back to his early career in the early 1970s, which he's scanned into JPGs from physical prints, and the original photographers will be impossible to identify or may no longer be living). In both cases, my subject has previously posted the photos on his website and social media feeds for marketing purposes. Not sure how Wikipedia views either of these kinds.

Finally, based on the information you provided, the five remaining photos I've already uploaded that haven't been flagged and deleted should probably be taken down. I can upload them again, using the information you provided.

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ericwestwood (talkcontribs) 20:38, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

ping|Ericwestwood}}
1. If uploaded already, then someone will find then on a google images search, and likely to get tagged as copyright violations - we get hundreds every day of people copying web images. Only by going to c:COM:CONSENT can you validate the claim - can take 3 months!!!
2. Photos of newspapers - copyright owned by newspaper, for at least 70 years. Photos from fans - copyright owned by fan (and then family) until fan has been deceased for 70 years.
All above assuming photo was not taking in US, then it gets tricky... Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:58, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

Bot reverting users

Hi, please stop your bot re-adding size reduction tags after they were manually removed, e.g. at File:She-Ra comparison.png. Bots can't assess better than humans whether a file size reduction is actually needed. Sandstein 17:16, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

@Sandstein: It doesn't work that way. The information to stop the bot adding the template is within the message posted to the uploader's talk page - A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). This time I have added the template for you. Ronhjones  (Talk) 17:23, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. But I think that the average editor will not have the patience or inclination to follow obscure technical directions left by a bot. I didn't understand the instructions, and I'm probably not the average editor. I suggest that you change the bot's behavior to not re-add a tag once a human editor removes it. Sandstein 17:42, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
Well you are the first in about 10,000 images. I'll have a think about the template wording first, and see if it can be clearer. Ronhjones  (Talk) 20:15, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
