Belarus
Hi.
Thank you for considering my concern with Belarus article however, the user Craft37by should not be taken seriously. I have already stated my point on the Belarus talk page. The user has a long history of vandalism and is using rather crude language against me and other users, who are trying to protect pages he vandalizes with own personal beliefs and information. Moreover, his edits are distorting history, for example the image caption which he changed to Lithuanian-Polish Commonwealth, a state that never existed or at least not under such name. Please revise this and let me know on my talk page. Thank you for help and Best Regards. Oliszydlowski, 04:19, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Oliszydlowski: Pages are always constructed by consensus. Just get a good agreement on the talk page for whatever the page content should be. If that is done well, there should be no more edit warring. If you have enough agreement, then the protection can obviously be removed earlier, either ask me or at WP:RFPP. Ronhjones (Talk) 12:51, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you. I believe that there is another user who supports my agreement on Belarus talk page against the vandal. We would like the protection removed so we can restore it to the original version prior to the edit war. Oliszydlowski, 13:10, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Oliszydlowski: Reduced to semi-protection, and see how it goes. Ronhjones (Talk) 13:58, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

IP Request for Blocked Account
Hi Ronhjones. I was recently made aware that there was an act of vandalism on our school's wikipedia page by a user with the name of Theunkn0wnvindicator. This vandalism included personal attacks of students, alumni, as well as staff, which I, as a member of the school's council, do not take lightly.
I am grateful for the vandalism's revert, and the user's block. However, I would like to investigate further into this infraction of school policy.
May I request for the IP address of said user?
--Meteorcrater (talk) 16:46, 3 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Meteorcrater: Sadly, that information is only available to a very limited subset of users, and will only be released under certain conditions. Please see foundation:Privacy_policy#Sharing Ronhjones (Talk) 17:06, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

BBC IP
Hello again Ron, regret to inform you that the BBC IP vandal 86.9.95.201 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) is again inserting unsourced/unreferenced material to a host of BBC articles - following a recent block. It seems they do not want to learn or respond on the various Talk pages. Can I leave with you please? Best regards, David, David J Johnson (talk) 12:16, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
User you blocked is making the same edits that got them blocked.
I reported Mattiaati (talk · contribs) for vandalism and disruptive editing and the user continues to do the same edits without discussing anything. In fact, user has never discussed anything anywhere on Wikipedia. User has been given multiple final warnings for disruptive editing & vandalism. User has been warned of edit-warring at both Christian Social Union in Bavaria and Alternative for Germany and after being blocked for edit-warring by yourself, has continued to make the edits at here and here, respectively. - R9tgokunks ⭕ 18:12, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

RonBot task 7
Hello and thank you for adding Category:Association footballers not categorized by position. It's always easier to fix problems if you can find them!
I stumbled upon the category and started fixing its articles with JWB before realising that the good bot is filling it faster than I can empty it. Could the bot make some of the changes automatically? For example, I've been using JWB to replace the category by Category:Association football forwards where I found some variant of position = Forward in the infobox. (I dealt with the subcategories first, for example by putting articles which were also in [[Category:.*women.*]] into Category:Women's association football forwards instead.)
One minor point: many of the pages end in {{Someland-footy-bio-stub}} or similar. Would it be easy to add the new category before that template rather than after it?
Thanks again, Certes (talk) 16:17, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

- To answer your points
- Other cats - Bot has not been approved for that task - it would need re-writing and re-approval. I'm not sure how easy it will be
- Position - Surprisingly not that easy, one gets the text as a large text variable, and just adds a newline and the template. A change of location would need much more code to cut the page in two (and find the right spot!) add the cat to part one and join back part two. That has been asked, I'm trying to see how hard it will be, although (hopefully) the cat will slowly get removed from all the articles.
- Also note that the bot will be set to run monthly. If someone edits a page, adds a position category, and forgets to remove the Category:Association footballers not categorized by position, the bot will remove it when it runs. Ronhjones (Talk) 16:51, 4 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the detailed response. It looks as if there will be tens of thousands of articles to fix rather than the 1,000 I saw originally (from your first wave). Making so many edits in JWB could be time-consuming and disruptive, so I'll leave the job to the football experts. Certes (talk) 17:37, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – August 2018
News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2018).
- After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Wikipedia.
- Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.
- The WMF Anti-Harassment Tools team is seeking input on the second set of wireframes for the Special:Block redesign that will introduce partial blocks. The new functionality will allow you to block a user from editing a specific set of pages, pages in a category, a namespace, and for specific actions such as moving pages and uploading files.
Review for img files
Thank you for your Review for img files(File:Karthika Deepam Logo.jpg and File:Premi Vishwanth Image.jpg), I will definetely do it.
One case where human assessment of an image size is needed (re RonBot)
Dear Ron, first thank you very much for having created the RonBot, which I have come to learn that among other things it checks new non-free file uploads, and can automatically tag them for size reduction when they exceed normal parameters. I am really appreciative of wikipedians like you who create these bots that save zillions of human hours by automating these tasks.
Today I also wanted to reach out to you because the RonBot has tagged for automatic image size reduction an file I uploaded yesterday: File:Year 2000 North Korea stamp commemorating the North Korea-loyal "Unconverted long-term prisoners" held in prison in South Korea (비전향 장기수).png. I was aware that the image had a higher pixel count than normally allowed, and trying to do my best in following the rules, I included in the upload a detailed justification of why this image merits an exception. Here is part of what I wrote:
- NOTE ON IMAGE SIZE: Wikipedia's Non-free content policy indicates that WP:Image resolution should be kept as low as possible. Usually it should be kept under 400 pixels. When larger "Images which need for some reason to be larger than this need a detailed justification given; otherwise they should be resized or deleted". This image merits an exception and here is the special justification for being larger. First, even though technically the pixel resolution is of 1293 × 925, the spatial resolution is lower than that (this was achieved with a two-step process of scanning the source book, and then taking a screen shot). Second, and more importantly, part of the purpose of displaying this image is so that 63 individuals, with their portrait pictures as well as their names, can be visible and legible respectively. A zoom-in to any one portrait in the file will demonstrate how the actual resolution per portrait is low; quite pixelated, as well as the captions under each. However, this resolution still allows it to be reasonably legible. Reducing further the resolution would render the text in the image illegible, and the image would lose an important part of its value.
This was further reinforced in the justification of purpose:
- This image will be used as the primary means of visual identification of 63 persons in the article that talks about them. It would have been categorized as an historic portrait, was it not for the fact that some of the individuals are still alive. This upload is the most efficient way of providing visual identification of all 63 individuals, within just one file.
So I would like to request if in this particular case if you could please remove the tagging for automatic image size reduction, so that the file upload rationale can be reviewed by a human. Thank you.(talk) user:Al83tito 18:45, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Al83tito: Not sure where you found "400 pixels" - the WP:NFC guideline is 100,000 pixels. Your image is 1,196,025 pixels. Images so very large can only be kept by community consensus. I'll set up a discussion, and tag (for now) for no deletion. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:21, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you, Ron. That works. And also thank you for that correction re WP:NFC. I will amend that bit in the rationale in the file page. Thanks.(talk) user:Al83tito 19:30, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- Oh, very nice of you!: you have already made that factual correction (re 100,000 pixels) in the rationale of the image. Thanks!(talk) user:Al83tito 19:32, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

Association football positions task
Hello. Re this edit: I replaced Category:Association footballers not categorized by position with Category:Association football utility players this morning, and the bot's just put the uncategorised cat back? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 19:50, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Struway2:I'm not a footy expert, just the bot writer. There are two lists at the top of Wikipedia:Bot_requests/Archive_76#Association_footballers_not_categorized_by_position - click the "show" links on the right - if they are not in the 15 categories of list 2, then it gets added. Suggest talk to the instigator - User:S.A. Julio Ronhjones (Talk) 19:56, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Struway2: When going through the category, I noticed almost all footballers categorised as "utility players" were also in more specific position categories. I added specific categories to the few which were missing them, hence why after it wasn't included in the list (and therefore why this was categorised again). The article mentions a couple of specific positions, so I've added them. S.A. Julio (talk) 20:18, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- @S.A. Julio: That specific article mentions two positions, neither of which is wing half which you added as a cat: half back isn't necessarily wing half, although Mr Dearson did play it. I agree adding the extra cats gets round the problem, but should we really be adding five or six categories to the sort of player that really didn't have a set position? I have no understanding of how the bot works, but in principle, could the utility player category not be added to the list for future runs? or is it too late in the process? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 20:32, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- Never too late, if any new cats were added to the list of 15, then the bot would automatically remove the Category:Association footballers not categorized by position Ronhjones (Talk) 22:43, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- If it's a quick adjustment, I'm all for adding Category:Association football utility players to the list. S.A. Julio (talk) 00:29, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

You/your bot tagged this file as being more than 100KB whereas the original file I uploaded was only 46KB......what is going on?......Paul venter (talk) 10:06, 15 August 2018 (UTC)*
- @Paul venter: The guideline is 100,000 pixels, not 100,000 bytes. Bytes are irrelevant. 348x451=156,948 pixels. Ronhjones (Talk) 15:40, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
- If that is the case then please get Wiki to change the units of file size measurement in their image description - "Georges_Léonnec00.jpg (277 × 358 pixels, file size: 26 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)" - to match the units recommended in their guideline. The present setup is irritating and inconsistent..... Paul venter (talk) 16:06, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- The file description and the file history always shows the pixel size first, and WP:NFC has used 100,000 pixels as a guideline since 2010. No-one ever talks about the file size, as it is dependent on too many variables (file type, lossless vs. lossy compression, degree of compression, etc.) If you want the data in a different form, then that has to be suggested at WP:VPT Ronhjones (Talk) 16:21, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

So you deleted my page Jeff Hunt (music producer) which I was creating at the behest of the individual in question, and he holds the copyright on opaque.ink/about which you flagged for copyright infringement. I need to know how to proceed.
And I wish you could undelete the page because you essentially deleted several hours of paid work.
Thanks, Alex — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alakshovel (talk • contribs) 14:38, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Alakshovel: Editors often check articles for text matching that on existing web sites. If the web site is not showing a suitable CC (or similar) licence, then it will get deleted - the automatic default for all external content is "All Rights Reserved". The only other option is for the copyright holder to donate the copyright at Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries - once the OTRS team have validated the permission, only then then it can be undeleted. Alternatively put the logo and text from https://creativecommons.org/choose/results-one?license_code=by-sa&jurisdiction=&version=4.0&lang=en at the bottom of http://www.opaque.ink/about and let me know. Ronhjones (Talk) 15:55, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
Hi Ron,
I'm having Jeff put the creative commons logo and text at the bottom of his About page, as per your suggestion. Thank you. Alex

Jeff Hunt (music producer)
Hi, so I was creating a page for Jeff Hunt, the owner of the "copyright material" over which my page was deleted. Could you undelete so I can do some copyright verification for this?
Thank you, Alex

- See note above. We cannot undelete copyright material. Ronhjones (Talk) 15:56, 15 August 2018 (UTC)\
Thank you Ronhjones. It seems to have been flagged again for Speedy Deletion but I've left a message with the Wikipedian addressing it, Sphilbrick, to ask that he not delete it.
Thank you!

Jeff Hunt (music producer)
You undid my speedy nomination of Draft:Jeff Hunt (music producer)
I acknowledged in my nomination perhaps to cryptically, that the source material did have a CC license but it was not one of the acceptable ones.
According to: Wikipedia:FAQ/Copyright, CC BY 4.0 is acceptable but CC BY-SA 4.0 is not.
The source is licensed:
"This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License*
Do you think I'm missing something or do you think the FAQ is wrong?--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:56, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Sphilbrick: What a pain. It's my fault - I told him to put 4.0 - Too used to commons licenses! It's obviously his page and we aren't going to get any problems, I'll tell him to alter it. Ronhjones (Talk) 17:45, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks. I've managed to make two types of errors relating to CC 4.0. I once accepted something because it sounded like a plausible license and got my hand slapped. Then I rejected something that was CC BY 4.0, thinking that the problem was the version, but it's a little more subtle it's the SA aspect I believe. I suspect that they aren't too thrilled because they thought they were taking your advice, but we will get it sorted out. I'm not going to restore the tag on the assumption that a suitable license will be provided shortly. (Someone needs to double our pay).--S Philbrick(Talk) 18:47, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

Is there a way to opt out of RonBot messages?
Will placing {{bots|deny=RonBot}}
on my user page / user talk page work? I upload larger image on purpose knowing RonBot will fix them later.Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 23:24, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
- I second this question. Images have been routinely reduced for Wikipedia purposes for years, without the uploader receiving annoying usertalk messages. Can you please disable the usertalk messages for standard image-reduction, or provide an opt-out feature? Softlavender (talk) 23:33, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Softlavender and Headbomb: The bot is exclusion compliant and obeys the bot/nobot template - {{Bots|deny=RonBot}} will work. Ronhjones (Talk) 23:39, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
- User page or talk page? Or either? Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 23:44, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Headbomb: The page the bot is proposing to edit. Bot gets the page contents, passes to Template:Bots#Python to see if it can change that page. In this case, of course, the user talk page. Ronhjones (Talk) 23:49, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

Future changes
- The 2018 Community Wishlist Survey begins on 29 October. The survey decides what the Community Tech team will work on. You can post proposals from 29 October to 11 November. You can vote on proposals from 16 November to 30 November.
- Legacy JavaScript global variables have been deprecated for seven years. They will soon be removed from all wikis. Gadgets and scripts that use them will stop working. You can test your community's gadgets on "group0" wikis. For example Test Wikipedia or mediawiki.org. The legacy JavaScript global variables are already disabled there. You can read the migration guide to fix old scripts. [6]

Yermi.mp4
I don't care if this file that was only uploaded as a test is deleted as G2, but to the best of my knowledge it wasn't a copyright violation. Alexis Jazz (talk) 19:11, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Alexis Jazz: The nominator said "as per uploader own admission" and your description said "has copyright", and it was not set up as fair use - I don't see anything amiss. Ronhjones (Talk) 21:17, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
- Did you even watch it? Did you see the size? My description said I cut it short because the music would be copyrighted. The clip doesn't even last a second and I don't think it even contains any sound at all due to the (ugly) way I had cut it. Even if there had been 1 second of audio, that would be de minimis for a test file. Alexis Jazz (talk) 21:30, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
- No, the deletion rationale matched the description you wrote. Ronhjones (Talk) 21:33, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
- This was the description: "Just testing if I can upload mp4. (I cut it short because the music has copyright and there is no need to upload a large file)"
- The original file had copyrighted music, so for the test I cut it short to make sure it wouldn't. And it didn't. In hindsight I guess I should have worded it more clearly. I am so sorry I didn't look up Big Buck Bunny to upload that instead.. Alexis Jazz (talk) 22:24, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

Images - Futsal Dinamo
Hi, Ronhjones, I've seen you messaged me about the size of the pictures I've put on the Futsal Dinamo's page. The images are less than 100 KB, they should be even smaller? And pleas explane me a little better, what does your message mean, that the pictures will be deleted in one week if I do not reduce them? Thank you for your time, --Jerkovic9 (talk) 17:23, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Jerkovic9:Ever one gets fixated about bytes - we don't care, it's pixels that count. 100,000 pixels is the guideline. If the image is over 105,000 pixels...
- It gets tagged by RonBot3 as oversized
- It gets reduced by DatBot6 (jpg/png), RonBot2 (gif), RonBot4 (svg) (or declared for manual reduce if tif/pdf)
- The old version(s) (only) gets revision deleted by RonBot1, 7 days later. Leaving the one current version showing.
- Now if you have reduced the image to get under 100kb, then the next reduction can make it a poor image (especially if it's a jpg) - you can either upload on top of the current image the original image and let there be a single reduction by the bot, or reduce it yourself to get under 100,000 pixels first (and not worry about the bytes!) - see what I did on File:Elon Musk's submarine.jpg - original on web site was 1024x576. It was reduced to 600 × 338, with a high compression, when that went to 421 × 237 (and only 17kb) it was poor, taking the original in Photoshop and making a 421 × 237 image of lower compression (108 KB) was a much better picture. Being a jpg makes it do that as it's a lossy compression. Ronhjones (Talk) 18:14, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

Advice
Hello! I noticed that you've changed the protection level of list of fastest-selling products to extended protection. I will like to add Exo's achievement into the page but I want to heed your advice first. I will like to add these three achievements into the concerts section:
- 1. 2017 Concert (SK) – Exo Planet 4 – The EℓyXiOn sold out (66,000) tickets in 0.2 seconds[1]
- 2. 2015 Concert (SK) – Exo Planet 2 – The Exo'luxion sold out (67,000) tickets in 0.4 seconds[2]
- 3. 2014 Concert (SK) – Exo from Exoplanet 1 – The Lost Planet sold out (42,000) tickets in 1.47 seconds[3]
I am aware that some sources are in Korean and Japanese which are common as Exo has been promoting in both countries. I feel that the exclusion of this information in the fastest-selling products page is not updated. I hope that these sources justify the inclusion of these concerts. Having read the talkpage, I will also like to apologise for the immature actions of some fans who must be new to Wikipedia. Exo has one of the highest page viewership in Wikipedia and this situation portrays the group and fans in a negative light. Lastly, I will like to seek advice not as a fan of Exo, but as a Wikipedian who wishes to update information in Wikipedia. I hope to receive a response soon. Thank you. Requiem II (talk) 15:22, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Requiem II: I was hoping that after the protection, we would get a nice clear discussion about what should be on the page. Sadly that has not happened, and all we have is various rantings, both on the talk page and endless e-mails at OTRS. The lack of discussion made it clear that these editors were just waiting for the 27th Aug, when the (original) protection ends. So I extended the protection by a month. Checking the history it's clear that the warring is all down to fairly new(ish) accounts. WP:SPAs, and IP - so in the hope of attracting some seasoned editors, who know how to properly edit, I changed it to extended protected. It not a subject I know about (one gets a call on WP:AIV about edit warring, and you have to dive in). The issue (as described at the time) was that a lot of the sources were blogs, fan sites, etc., - effectively written by the fans, and not a proper reliable source. My suggestion (if you are not 100% sure it's a RS), is to ask at WP:RSN. But it would be nice if it gets sorted out before the protection ends. Ronhjones (Talk) 17:05, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

- Thank you for your reply! I've started a discussion at WP:RSN regarding the sources and I'm currently waiting for responses. If they are verified to be reliable, can I include these information into the page myself, or do I need to seek consensus first? Requiem II (talk) 01:08, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Requiem II: Be bold. - WP:BRD - You can discuss if someone objects. Hopefully you can find all the RS, and get it fixed before the fans get back. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:21, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
Vandalism
Sorry to bother you. But seems the user you just blocked has a new nickname and is making cuts in articles without proof and cutting verified sourced articles. His name is Review 2018. Can you please do something?
Heraldique21 (talk) 19:42, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
Hi Ronhjones,
I am not the same user but another and I also removed the contributions of Heraldique21 because there are hoaxes about fake titles (same problem with this user on french Wikipedia). I suggest you block Heraldique21 for vandalism. Thanks. --Review2018 (talk) 19:52, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
Review2018
Hello Ron Clearly this user is a fake or troll, who just join Wiki not even an hour ago. I suggest he goes to History class before calling someone qualified a hoax when he is clearly a vandal Heraldique21 (talk) 19:57, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
- Would you mind reviewing the discussion I've been having with Heraldique21 and Review2018 on their talk pages? One of the reasons I haven't unblocked Review2018 was because I'm assuming they're this IP address you blocked. My own assessment of Heraldique21's edits leads me to conclude that reverting them was appropriate (I've even gone and reverted several more). Ian.thomson (talk) 01:42, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Ian.thomson: It's a weird one. Obviously Heraldique21 is a new editor, and (from where he left the vandal report - WP:BOTREQ!) does not know his way around. But he's been here a short while, made quite a few edits, no warnings up till that time. It did seem at the time that 194.199.4.202 was just hounding him, with a "copy and paste" edit summary and reverting all his edits. I think your message on Heraldique21 is fine - he does need to get good sources for his edits - I don't know about fr-wiki, maybe they are not so hot on WP:RS - he may have been used to a different environment. Review2018 - he's either the IP or a friend. Maybe there is a group following him around... Ronhjones (Talk) 14:11, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
- Fr-Wiki appears to have their own versions of WP:V and WP:CITE. Their equivalent of WP:RS is still a part of the WP:CITE page. There's a reason I don't have {{user fr-0}} on my userpage, though.
- All I've find on Heraldique21 on Fr-Wiki are four reverted edits with the same goal, promoting Henry Salas-Perez's claims of nobility. I think we've got two SPAs, but I'm less inclined to believe the one that's claiming his claims of nobility are supported by non-existent citations to a legal gazette started by a gov't that was hoping to get rid of the nobility. Heraldique21 blocked indefinitely for hoax on French Wikipedia
Hi Ron,
Heraldique21 took us for fools on French Wikipedia with a hoax concerning fake titles given to a guy named "Arnaud Henry Salas-Perez (these affirmations are totally fake : these titles are extinct and have nothing to do with this guy) and he tried to do the same on English Wikipedia.
A sysop blocked him for that on French Wikipédia [7]
Heraldique21 took also everybody for fools on English Wikipedia and because It was difficult for me to explain everything on english Wikipedia, I was blocked by Ian.thomson who firstly trusted him.
But now everything is clear : Heraldique21 has been blocked indefinitely by Ian.thomson as in French Wikipedia and the problem is fixed.
Last thing : Heraldique21 is not a new editor but a sockpuppet of a banned editor on French Wikipedia.
To clear a misunderstanding, I confirm that I am not at all 194.199.4.202, and I hope you trust me this time and you will trust me next time. Best Regards. --Review2018 (talk) 17:42, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Review2018: He obviously has a pre-defined agenda, and knows how to game the system. The problem is not going away just yet - https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%89%B9%E5%88%A5:%E6%8A%95%E7%A8%BF%E8%A8%98%E9%8C%B2/Heraldique21. I've dropped an English speaking ja-wiki admin an e-mail. Pending changes
Hi. Please remove pending changes protection from List of causes of death by rate. It's a nightmare to work with for regular editors, and the page does not have that high level of vandalism; semiprotection will do. No such user (talk) 20:28, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
- @No such user: That does not make sense - semi-protection is a higher level of protection, not lower - it stops all anon editing. If (as you say) there is no vandalism then the next level down is unprotected. It seems to me that the pending changes is working OK. You can always ask for a protection increase at WP:RFPP Ronhjones (Talk) 21:29, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
- Then please remove protection altogether. Long story short, PC is crap, and it makes page watchers go through hoops to revert simple vandalism, so it's a discourtesy to both regular editors and IPs to have it. It should be applied only in special cases, and preferrably never. No such user (talk) 05:22, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Request for Mediation
Would it be at all possible if I could ask your help in resolving an ongoing edit war at Dingo? One user, HiLo48, insists that the word "feral" can not be used to describe dingoes, as the user alleges that that word is not used in Australia to describe dingoes for negative reasons, even though "feral" is being used as a non-negative manner, and that the two sources given for using "feral" (to describe the dingo's descent from domesticated dogs) were written by Australian researchers.--Mr Fink (talk) 00:22, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Apokryltaros: Admins have their own speciality areas, that's not one of mine. Also as I have liaised with you on other items, we would end up with "involved admin", and that will help nobody. The correct venue for this is WP:DR Ronhjones (Talk) 00:36, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
- I see. Thank you for your instructions on how to correctly do this.--Mr Fink (talk) 01:00, 6 September 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- When you added or edited a template with the visual editor the input boxes were very big. This has been fixed. The input boxes will now be smaller until you click on them. Then they will change size to fit the text. [26]
Problems
- Some diffs showed lines in the wrong order. This was fixed last week. [27]
- Marking a cross-wiki notification as read didn't work every time. The other wiki was not updated. This has now been fixed. [28]
<maplink>
did not work for a few days. This was because of a bug. This has now been fixed. [29]{{subst:REVISIONUSER}}
is used by some templates. For a period edits saved with{{subst:REVISIONUSER}}
would save the previous user's name and not your username. This is now fixed. Edits made before the bug was fixed will still be wrong and need to be corrected. [30]- When you move a page the title still shows the old page name. The developers are working on fixing this. [31]
Changes later this week
- Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour. You can read more about this.
- Because of the data centre test there will be no new version of MediaWiki this week. Changes for this week will come next week instead.
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 11 Septmber at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 12 September at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- The developers work on making the wikis work better on mobile phones. There is a list of common problems when making content easier to read in the mobile view. You can add things to the page and ask others to help.

Theoretical Behaviorism
DEAR Ron Jones: Not sure where to respond re Theoretical Behaviorism. I absolutely did not coy any of the BFS paper cited but there may be some inadvertent simiarities between my text and his. How can I check and fix whatever the problem is? Many thanks! John S/ jers@duke.edu — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rayner111 (talk • contribs) 17:11, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
Dear Ronjones: Well, it is as I suspected. Wiki has a bum bot. All the so-called "copyright violations"are clearly listed as quotes -- please check for yourself. I said things like "Skinner goes on to say..."followed by a block quote; apparently the bot cannot detect that as an actual quote. I think that readers will have no problem. What should I do? Can I just add quotation marks around the quote? That is not standard but will it pacify the bot? Thanks, JS — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rayner111 (talk • contribs) 14:27, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Rayner111: See Wikipedia:Quotations and Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Quotations. Short quotes use {{Quote}}, longer ones use blockquote. Do keep quotes as small as possible and as few as possible. Ronhjones (Talk) 15:00, 16 September 2018 (UTC)

Protection on List of causes of death by rate
It looks like on 31 Aug you lifted protection on List of causes of death by rate which you had imposed some time before. Since that protection removal, there have been several more vandalism flurries by anon (IP6) user(s). Perhaps you would consider again protecting that article. I just fixed a pile of old vandalism that happened before you put protection on the page. Thanks. --R. S. Shaw (talk) 02:30, 21 September 2018 (UTC)

Thank You & input needed
Thank You for taking the time to add the company logo to the National Aviation Academy page! I have another issue though.. Another editor decided to delete everything I wrote, plus what was there originally. And what they wrote has a typo. I have been trying to find current third party sources to cite and it is taking me longer than planned. But, I don't understand why they deleted everything from the page. Do you? Any input is much appreciated. Updates-for-you 2018 (talk) 15:17, 28 September 2018 (UTC)
- The page history will tell you who edited and their reasons (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=National_Aviation_Academy&action=history). There will be links to their talk page as well. Non-deterministic sorting
The bot keeps edit-warring with itself, see [37]. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 03:06, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Headbomb: That's because the sort is case insensitive (as requested) so "QSR magazine" and "QSR Magazine" are placed in random order. Did you want both entries? Not sure how to fix that, I'll have a think. Ronhjones (Talk) 15:59, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
- Both entries are desired, as the bot we use is case-sensitive. I suggest sorting 'cap first, lower case second' where multiple entries are otherwise equivalent. E.g. Eggplant > ELIFE > ELife > eLife > Emory. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 19:34, 27 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Headbomb: There is now a plain sort and then a lowercase sort one after the other, see how it goes. I do have a backup plan. Ronhjones (Talk) 15:45, 28 September 2018 (UTC)

- Ordinary pages can no longer be loaded as javascript. You could do this using

Hello, do you know what pages call this category? Since it contains only WP:HD and the reference desks, I figured it was include-onlyed in their headers, but I'm not finding it there.
Context — it seems to me that it should be "help" rather than "Help", and "Wikpedia" definitely ought to become "Wikipedia", so I was going to change the links and move the category, but I don't know where the fix needs to happen. Nyttend (talk) 22:19, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

Interface administrator changes
- Cyberpower678 • Deryck Chan • Oshwah • Pharos • Ragesoss • Ritchie333

- Following a request for comment, the process for appointing interface administrators has been established. Currently only existing admins can request these rights, while a new RfC has begun on whether it should be available to non-admins.
- There is an open request for comment on Meta regarding the creation a new user group for global edit filter management.
- Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Wikipedia and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
- The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.
- Because of a data centre test, you will be able to read but not edit the Wikimedia projects for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time.
- The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
- The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
- Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
- Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.
