Aaron Swartz on Wikipedia

[edit]

Even if all the formatters quit the project tomorrow, Wikipedia would still be immensely valuable. For the most part, people read Wikipedia because it has the information they need, not because it has a consistent look. It certainly wouldn’t be as nice without one, but the people who (like me) care about such things would probably step up to take the place of those who had left. The formatters aid the contributors, not the other way around.

But Wikipedia’s openness isn’t a mistake; it’s the source of its success. A dedicated community solves problems that official leaders wouldn’t even know were there. Meanwhile, their volunteerism largely eliminates infighting about who gets to be what. Instead, tasks get done by the people who genuinely want to do them, who just happen to be the people who care enough to do them right. Wikipedia’s biggest problems have come when it’s strayed from this path, when it’s given some people official titles and specified tasks. Whenever that happens, real work slows down and squabbling speeds up. But it’s an easy mistake to make, so it gets made again and again.

Hello Paul venter, I just thought I'd let you know that I saw your article Frederick Timpson I'Ons in the New Articles list-- You did an excellent job uploading an image to the article. However, I think the article seems to contain a few errors: the references in the article do not follow Wikipedia guidelines. Hieronymus Harder

[edit]

Hello Paul! I've been following your edits at Binomial nomenclature. I'm hoping you are adding inline sources to support your individual points, so they can stay in the article. I was waiting until you finish your Hieronymus Harder article to make any changes (soon?), but in the Binomial article the Hieronymus info belongs in the history section (if it is sourced) instead of the lead. I'm very curious what your sources say about 1) whether he always used a binomial or only partially, and 2) how much, if any, he talked about a system of binomial nomenclature as proposed for use by everyone. Thanks for the info! --Tom Hulse (talk) 10:25, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tom, No, I don't have any sources in which Harder made notes specifically about Binomial nomenclature, but only index pages from his Herbarium vivum which clearly display his use of the idea. From the image I posted at Binomial nomenclature it should be apparent that he didn't always stick to a binomial style. "The introduction of this system of naming species is credited to Linnaeus" in the lead should certainly be balanced by a reference to earlier use of the idea by Harder and the Bauhins and others, lest a reader get the notion that Linnaeus got the idea straight from heaven rather than the tweaking of an idea that goes back much further in time! Go well Paul venter (talk) 13:53, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I sure do understand wanting to get the word out more about this great guy. His work is amazing, and I'm really enjoying the info you are adding at the other two articles, but the trouble here is that Wikipedia is about what the sources say, not about what may be true. Even if there were sources, we would still have to be careful not to give him credit for more than should apply. For instance, he did not publish a description of how to use a system of binomial nomenclature, nor is he even using a system of binomial nomenclature in his herbarium vivum, just a mix of different-sized names (although many are inividually binomials). We don't have any evidence that Linnaeus was influenced by him (we do have evidence that L. was influence by the Bauhins), nor that anyone was. Using a mixed system including binomials was not new or unique at his time, certainly less notable than the Bauhins who themselves only merit a minor mention in the History section. So I'm sorry I'll have to drastically reduce your addition to just a part of a sentence in the History section, and remove the image. They're just not that relevant to the article, I hope you understand. Best regards. --Tom Hulse (talk) 08:49, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Paul I removed the unsourced material per WP:NOR & WP:RS. In the History section, the article currently says "The Bauhins... took some important steps towards the binomial system", and I would really like add info here about Hieronymus Harder, but I can't without a reliable source, so please let me know if you find anything. --Tom Hulse (talk) 09:07, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've been extremely careful about my additions and did not make any unwarranted assumptions about Harder's contribution to binomial nomenclature - I simply posted the image which clearly shows that Harder made use of the binomial idea. His early use of binomialism is extremely relevant to the article, so that I am reverting the edit and hope that a wider group of editors may become involved in the discussion before deciding that Harder is really irrelevant. cheers Paul venter (talk) 09:16, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your passing remarks on the article talk page. I have replaced the Saint-Saëns image, and for reasons already discussed at PR am reluctant to replace the famous Sargent image at the top. But I cannot see which other two images you object to. I know that the MoS says "It is often preferable to place images of faces so that the face or eyes look toward the text. However, images of people need not be reversed simply to make the person's face point the text", but I can't find the two other images you refer to as, in your words, "happily peering away from the text". Re: "Download sites"

[edit]

Hi Paul. Thanks for your note regarding your article "Download sites". I took a look at it and as it was, I agree the deletion was appropriate. However, I can see that it could be useful to have a page listing relevant databases, sites, journals etc, so I have restored it and moved into your userspace here: User:Paul venter/Download sites. I don't recommend re-posting it into the article space as it will most likely be deleted again, but you can keep it in your userspace. You could also talk to the botany wikiproject about making it into a resources subpage of the wikiproject or possibly even writing a subject area database list, such as: List of biodiversity databases, List of neuroscience databases, List of online databases and List of academic databases and search engines. Unfortunately I don't know enough about botany or these websites to know if developing your page into such a list would be appropriate or not so I cannot advise you either way but it's just an idea that you might consider discussing with other editors more knowledgeable about this area and these databases. I noticed that someone has also started collection some links to botanical databases and catalogs here: Outline_of_botany#External_links. Also, in future, if you are starting a new article which you haven't finished and are still actively working on, you would be best to start the article in a sub-page of your userspace (for example, User:Paul venter/Drafts). We give people a lot of leeway with userspace drafts so you would generally be free to work on it in your own time and without having to worry about people interfering with it or nominating it for speedy deletion before you have even finished. Then once you have finished working on it, simply move the page to the main article space. Hope this helps. Cheers, Sarah 06:48, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

PS Just FYI, I found the name "Download sites" confusing and it really didn't seem to be an appropriate name for an article. Please see the policy on article titles for more information about article titles, but I would suggest that an article listing botanical databases be named something like "List of botany databases". License tagging for File:Jean Giono00.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Jean Giono00.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. Paul

Thanks for creating the William Brown Macdougall Wiki page. Incidentally, Macdougall has no capital 'D" in his name, although the information you have provided is otherwise quite accurate. I wondered where you sourced it from as some of it is not widely documented ?

We have more information regarding WBM if you are interested in adding it. Alternatively, we could add it ourselves although not exactly familiar with how to go about it.

Spaces in botanical author abbreviations

Too true - I must have suffered from a mental aberration (momentary I hope). Thanks for picking it up! I notice the author abbreviations are not consistent in their treatment of, for example, "de Winter' and "de Wit", using "De" and "de" in the abbreviations. Is there a reason other than "oops"? Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Cor Dirks00.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Cor Dirks00.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 09:29, 15 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Cor Dirks00.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Cor Dirks00.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Mass wasting - cautions

[edit]

Please use caution and read WP:RS and WP:Copyvio. In your recent edits to mass wasting here you (inadvertently) left a fragment copied from the source you were using. It was removed by another user, and although obviously an error, it was simply a violation of copyright and we must be very careful about such things. Secondly the source you used, some professor's "lecture notes", fails our referencing requirements. We must use material published in a reliable source. I am well aware that back 7 or 8 years ago WP was much more lax on this and much unreferenced and poorly referenced content remains. Back then "content was king", but now Wikipedia has tighter standards - and "lecture notes" simply are not reliable sources. Please study the guideline pages linked above and use caution. Vsmith (talk) 11:08, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If I inadvertently left that fragment, why am I getting this entirely gratuitous sermon about stuff I already know? Paul venter (talk) 14:05, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I was just wondering if you had a more specific source for the information you added to the article fairy circle (Africa), as in the title of the actual paper that references the information added. Angryapathy (talk) 13:51, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Helena Scott

[edit]

Hi Paul Venter, Before I saw your article on Helena Scott I created an entry on Helena and Harriet Scott. Now there are two similar articles which I think should be one article as they are always referred to together as the Scott sisters. This is why I entitled my version Helena and Harriet Scott. I therefore suggest we move the content you created along with the images and categories into the article with the jointly named title. Do you think this is a good solution? Elara7 (talk) 04:00, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Elara, My first reaction would be to leave both articles as is with a 'See also' note and/or piping in the lead paragraph. Some rabid editor is bound to object in order to do some grandstanding, but I can see no compelling reason to merge the articles. The other way to go may be to do a separate article on Harriet Scott, something which shouldn't be too difficult as the groundwork has already been done. Anyway, whatever we decide is bound to be set aside by a bunch of editors who would claim to know better and also claim to have consensus, so that in the end it doesn't matter. Cheers Paul venter (talk) 06:51, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Paul venter, Thanks for your suggestion. I will go ahead and do a separate article on Harriet, which as you said should be easier than merging the two articles. Thanks Elara7 (talk) 23:15, 7 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Better source request for File:Rita Miljo02.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for your upload to Wikipedia:

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Request for help regarding a block

[edit]

(see discussion here) (Criteria for speedy deletion#G5)

As i have explained at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard, I deleted Ecolon on the basis of a block log entry for Androstachys, referring to you as a "community-banned long-term disruptive editor". However, I see no evidence that this is correct. Can you clarify the circumstances that led to the Androstachys account being blocked? If you can, I will consider changing the block log, to prevent the same sort of mistake being made again. JamesBWatson (talk) 14:03, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the offer. The Androstachys account was blocked by Hesperian as a result of long-standing friction with him and Rkitko over interpretations of the MoS and consequent edit-warring. For the exact sequence of events one would have to inspect the history log of Androstachys. Also relevant was the removal by Hesperian to mainspace of about a dozen articles which had been developed by Rotational in his user space (for the history of one such article see here). Paul venter (talk) 14:53, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is also relevant. Paul venter (talk) 15:00, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that information. On the face of it, it seems that the block log entry made by Hesperian is way out of line. However, I have asked Hesperian to comment, and am willing to wait a little while to see if he/she makes any response. Feel free to contact me about this if I don't get back on this within a couple of days, if you wish to. JamesBWatson (talk) 19:33, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hesperian is still, it seems, of the opinion that you were community banned, but since nobody has produced a record of when or where this happened, I don't know whether it is true or not. However, it is evident that you created the article while evading at least one block, and whether the block was based on a ban or not is of little relevance, as the deletion reason "Creation by a banned or blocked user" is still valid. The undeletion of the article took place because the deletion was believed to have been made on the basis of a false impression, but it is now clear that that was not the case. On a different but related issue, your request for undeletion says "Previous nominations of other articles created by user Androstachys were dismissed since the articles were found to be useful, and that being banned or blocked did not automatically mean that work prior to the ban was without merit". However, the policy that pages created by editors evading blocks can be deleted does not depend on lack of "merit" of those pages. It is true that there are some administrators who choose to ignore this particular policy, because they personally disagree with it. My own belief, however, is that the job of an administrator is to administer policy, not to use one's administrative powers to further one's own personal view. No administrator is ever obliged to take action that he or she doesn't personally agree with, but undoing an existing action because of one's own view, even though that view is contrary to policy, is, in my opinion, unacceptable, and so requesting undeletion on such grounds is invalid. JamesBWatson (talk) 09:22, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Thomas Pearson Stokoe00.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Thomas Pearson Stokoe00.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful.

Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 05:07, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that James is busy with some sort of crusade - I believe to the detriment of WP - and has also deleted Thomas Pearson Stokoe, Johannes Schumacher and Getaway (magazine). Deletions of this sort have come up before here and here. In my opinion the G5 policy is not so much punitive to the erring editor, but rather shoots WP in both feet. The G5 policy should be reviewed to align with WP's oft-stated goal of doing that which is in the best interest of the Encyclopaedia. Paul venter (talk) 19:32, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Paul venter. In the Cer-Vit article, as created by Androstachys, which i understand was your account, you have written that it was made by "Owens-Illinois Corning", which is not clear. Was it made by Owens-Illinois and Corning Inc., two separate companies, or by Owens Corning, an offshoot of them both? I'm merely asking so i can send the wlink(s) to the right place (currently the Corning one goes to a disambiguation page). Thanks for your help. repeated invocation of my name: "I first touched on it some while back when I pointed out to Sminthopsis84". It sounds as if you are criticizing me for not understanding everything that it is your mind, and, frankly, I find that unpleasant. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 22:22, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Peter coxhead wrote I'm baffled by your phrase "the plant". What plant? I and Sminthopsis84 have spent time trying to explain that "nettle" doesn't refer to one plant, so how can the primary meaning be "the plant"?. I found this surprising in view of the fact that I had commented to you at the very outset that the article was taking a very narrow view of 'nettle' if it didn't include all the other plants so named across the English-speaking world.. Please do not introduce inflammatory rhetoric where there was none before and also confine this sort of comment to the article's talk page. Paul venter (talk) 22:55, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe that this sort of thing belongs on the article talk page. Clearly, you and I are unable to communicate. What you've just said about "the plant" and a much earlier discussion when the page was about the genus Urtica still makes no sense to me, but I don't care to engage with someone who uses phrases like inflammatory rhetoric. However, please stop abusing me on the article talk page. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 23:02, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think the average person would regard my comments as abuse - or abstruse. Paul venter (talk) 23:06, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Nudaurelia cytherea capensis00.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Nudaurelia cytherea capensis00.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 13:08, 31 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tentamen

[edit]

Hallo, in this edit you over-wrote a long-standing and helpful redirect (from alternate spelling of "Tentamun") and replaced it with an unsourced dictionary definition. I've reverted. If you have sourced information for something beyond a dictionary definition, then create an article but make a hatnote to replace the current redirect (or make a dab page to offer the two meanings), rather than losing that navigational assistance. Thanks. PamD 00:31, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware, Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made; that is to say, editors are not automatically "entitled" to three reverts.
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. Please note that, per WP:BRD, if you make a change to a longstanding title, redirect, or other facet of an article, and that change is reverted, you must discuss the matter and achieve a consensus before attempting to implement the change again. [edit]

Thank you for your note on my talk page refreshing my memory about edit-warring. I notice that you did not warn the other party PamD - was that deliberate or inadvertent? cheers Paul venter (talk) 21:04, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That was deliberate. Your initial bold edit was proper; PamD's initial revert was proper; undoing the reversion without discussion was improper, and required a response. bd2412 T 23:27, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
PamD's initial revert may have been proper, but it was followed by 2 more reverts on the 24th - were they also proper and not falling within the meaning of edit warring? I think if one uses a system one should try to be even-handed.....Paul venter (talk) 15:40, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I do not think that even-handedness requires ignoring clearly differing degrees of impropriety. bd2412 T 15:43, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Really? This is from your post on my page

  • Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made; that is to say, editors are not automatically "entitled" to three reverts.
  • Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

I do not see your "clearly differing degrees of impropriety" but rather a clear case of prejudice. Paul venter (talk) 16:09, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have explained above that your first move was proper, that PamD's first revert was proper, and that your following move was improper. You appear to have accepted that this was a correct judgment, so no further examination of the question is required. Cheers! bd2412 T 16:24, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what gives you the impression that I have accepted your action as the "correct judgement"!!?? You obviously are not giving my notes close attention. I ask again "Why do you regard PamD's reverts after my 'improper' revert as being acceptable? Paul venter (talk) 19:13, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Let me ask you plainly, then. Do you agree that it was wrong for you to revert PamD? bd2412 T 19:25, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No! I do not think it was wrong. Her note read "revert to long-established redirect, instead of unsourced dicdef" As I pointed out to her a 'long-established redirect' was of itself not a compelling reason for her to revert. As regards 'unsourced dicdef', I provided sources with my next edit. Paul venter (talk) 06:50, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You then created a page tagged as a disambiguation page, but which violates numerous aspects of MOS:DAB, including the express prohibition on external links appearing on disambiguation pages, and failing to actually disambiguate between ambiguously titled entries in the encyclopedia. Your actions in this regard were ultimately reverted by another administrator. Please do not create disambiguation pages unless and until there are multiple articles in Wikipedia that share an ambiguous title, or at least mention the topics by the name or term proposed to be ambiguous. bd2412 T 13:25, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your gratuitous lecture is noted, but you have consistently failed to explain your bias in issuing edit-warring tags. Paul venter (talk) 15:03, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I thought I had explained things, but to be clear, yours was the first improper act, and the impropriety of your conduct grew worse with each successive edit. No other editor in this dispute was seeking to impose a page containing materials prohibited by MOS:DAB (which I encourage you to review if you intend to continue editing disambiguation pages), which any editor could and should therefore have immediately removed from the page. bd2412 T 15:15, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)I don't remember why I'm a talk page stalker of BD2412...but I am. Get over it Paul. You made a bad edit and then edit warred over it. Did someone else edit war? Yes....but they were right. Get over it. I make mistakes here, and I am happy when people correct me. I want the wiki to be accurate. --Onorem (talk) 15:18, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The edit-warring tag is intended for editors who are edit-warring - it doesn't ask who was right and who was wrong. Read this post with more care so that you can understand my concern, instead of rushing off half-cocked. Paul venter (talk) 09:55, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hmm, interesting: I've just seen all the above for the first time, as Paul's talkpage is on my watchlist. I'd actually disagree with your (BD2412)'s statement above that "[Paul's] initial bold edit was proper": he over-wrote an existing redirect without supplying any replacement (such as a hatnote) for the reader looking for the Egyptian name. That was improper, and the reason that having initially PRODded the unsourced dicdef I instead reverted to the pre-existing redirect. PamD 12:28, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Proper in the sense that it wasn't straight-up vandalism. It could, in theory, have been a first step towards building a sourced and cited article on the topic. It turns out that it wasn't, but the edit by itself was merely poor editorial judgment, as opposed to something sinister. In any case, I do not think that there is any value to be gained by continuing this discussion. If anyone has anything further to say, please take it to WP:ANI. Cheers! bd2412 T 13:50, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Edit-warring is edit-warring, and if you're going to slap edit-warring tags on editors, then do so on ALL the parties involved - don't try to prejudge the situation by deciding who was right or wrong, or what was proper and improper - in this case your judgement was poor. Provenance

[edit]

Hm, could've sworn that there were more with incomplete or obviously bad metadata. That said, I'll accept that you might have been present to photograph Rosa Hope in the 60s/early 70s, or Judith Mason in 1980. But some of the pictures of Cuan and Phyllis McCarthy seem to be from the 20s/30s. DS (talk) 15:43, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Phyllis McCarthy was my mother-in-law while Cuan was her son - Phyllis was a painting companion of Rosa Hope and took the photo of her painting in the Drakensberg. The article on Phyllis states quite clearly "She established the Glenaholm Kennels in 1949" which was when she started breeding Ridgebacks, while Cuan was only born in 1929 - I have no idea which photos you presume to date from the "20s/30s". Paul venter (talk) 15:57, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'll accept that these are family photos. (Also, I got the names and timeline bungled - Phyllis and Victor are one generation, Cuan and Gillian are a different generation! Good thing I got that sorted out before I renamed any files!) However, you weren't quite paying attention to what "own work" meant, back in '07 when you uploaded these. "Own work" specifically means that you were the one holding the camera — which you weren't. For the photos where you have no idea who the photographer was, you can get away with "family photo -- as a representative of the McCarthy estate by virtue of having married into it, I release the rights to this photo under <license>"; for the ones where you do know who the photographer was (e.g., the picture of Rosa, painting... the photo is by Phyllis McCarthy, and so she owned the copyright, which will not expire until either 50 years after she took the photo (1970ish?, so 2020ish) or 50 years after her death (1986, so 2036). But, as a representative of the McCarthy estate etc etc etc. So if you could fix those details for the McCarthy family pictures, that'd be really helpful. Thanks. DS (talk) 16:48, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
However, you weren't quite paying attention to what "own work" meant, back in '07 when you uploaded these. "Own work" specifically means that you were the one holding the camera — which you weren't. - Which images specifically are you referring to when you say I tagged them as "own work"? Paul venter (talk) 19:06, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
File:Cuan McCarthy02.jpg, File:Phyllis McCarthy05.jpg, File:Rosa Hope00.JPG, file:Phyllis McCarthy02.jpg, file:Cuan and Gillian McCarthy (1954).jpg, and file:Phyllis McCarthy00.jpg. DS (talk) 20:07, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • File:Cuan McCarthy02.jpg "Own image of Cuan McCarthy during his Cambridge University years" - This image, taken c1952 by Cuan's friend and under South African PD, was given to me by Cuan McCarthy who also owned the copyright.
  • File:Phyllis McCarthy05.jpg "Own photo showing McCarthy Twins with Rhodesian Ridgeback champion Glenaholm Dido and Glenaholm Cleopatra (1950)" - This image, taken c1950 by Phyllis McCarthy, was given to me by her; she also owned the copyright.
  • File:Rosa Hope00.JPG "Own image of Rosa Hope painting in Natal Drakensberg, South Africa" - Taken in 1950s and discussed previously.

etc. These photos, with their copyright, were left to me by Phyllis and Cuan McCarthy and it is in that sense that they were owned by me and labelled "own image" or "own photo" - in none of the descriptions did I claim to be the author or label them as "own work". Paul venter (talk) 06:36, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Paul, DS asked me to take a look at this. After looking at it, I think you're right; I would interpret "own image" as saying that you hold the copyright, not that it's necessarily your work. However, it might be easiest, if you're willing, to add a brief explanatory note to the ones that aren't your own work, saying that you inherited the copyright. It's up to you, though; I think you're all right regardless. Thanks, Writ Keeper  03:57, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Writ Keeper, thanks for the suggestion - have re-labelled the photos accordingly. cheers Paul venter (talk) 09:43, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I wonder if you might know whether or not there was any connection between this William Felton and a Colonel Arthur Felton Mulliner, coach builder and part of a coach making etc dynasty see Arthur Mulliner. I've accumulated quite a bit of bumpf about the Mulliner family and they had a habit of marrying into other coachbuilding families - I suppose because of the practice of sending each other's sons for apprenticeship to someone of at least equal standing. Anyway do you know much of William Felton's family? Regards, Eddaido (talk) 21:50, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly unfree File:Sydney Skaife.jpg

[edit]

A file that you uploaded or altered, File:Sydney Skaife.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files because its copyright status is unclear or disputed. If the file's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. You may find more information on the file description page. You are welcome to add comments to its entry at the discussion if you object to the listing for any reason. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 15:54, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Sydney Skaife00.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Stefan2 (talk) 19:53, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

By the time I saw this message the image had already been deleted. This is an idiotic process which allows the uploader no time to object to the deletion and does not take into account global time differences. If you're going to use this tag make sure that it means what it says...Paul venter (talk) 10:13, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rising Star Cave

[edit]

Dear Paul,

I see you started the Rising Star Cave page and thank you for that. There are however a number of errors as well as speculation that is not factual nor supported and much of which is wrong (as you will see from my profile, I am in some position to weigh in on this matter. I have tried to change some of the inaccuracies and the keep re-occurring perhaps because you are an editor? I don't know, but I would appreciate assistance in getting the factual content correct.

For example:

"who, as part of an organised search commissioned of geologist Pedro Boshoff" in fact Pedro works for me (and was under my employ) and I commissioned the exploration with him as lead caver.

"for the exploration" should read "for the expedition" - we already had funds for the exploration from national geographic, the expedition was funded separately

"which commenced on 10 November" the expedition began on 7 November

Paul, thank you for your comments on my personal page. Please address the issues that you do not have issue with for which you are responsible. Rather than go into a tit for tat discussion, I believe we should call for a more senior editor to deal with our issues. Do you agree? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Profberger (talkcontribs) 17:16, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

this entire sentence "The large number of individuals found in a tiny underground chamber, though, invites speculation on the cause. The difficulty of access as well as apparent early age of the site would seem to rule out formal burial; the only possibilities remaining are transport by water from another location, or an attempted escape from a catastrophic surface event. Interestingly, the Tswaing crater, some 200,000 years old, lies only 70km distant." is entirely speculative, unsupported and in fact most probably wrong The first sentence is ok, because it does invite speculation of course, but to speculate in the absence of evidence does not support the encyclopedic nature of the wiki.

"The cave system has been previously visited by recreational cavers, though not the fossil chamber. " we have not said the latter part of this sentence and it is unsupported.

" Lee Berger noted on Facebook that he assembled a skeleton from UW-102 materials.[6]" I perhaps think your using a facebook posting to leap to assembling what is implied as a whole skeleton is perhaps a bit much don't you think?

I would very much appreciate your assistance in correcting these factual errors as soon as possible. I have tried and they keep bouncing back so your assistance as an editor and creator would be greatly appreciated.

Profberger (talk) 12:21, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Copied from Lee Berger's talk page:
Dear Lee, Thank you for your notes on the cave. The first thing I should bring to your attention is that I am an editor of the article, but not the only editor. Wikipedia frowns on ownership of articles.

  • The inclusion of Pedro Boshoff was done by an editor called Paleo Bonegirl.
  • "Lee Berger noted on Facebook that he assembled a skeleton from UW-102 materials.[6]" I perhaps think your using a facebook posting to leap to assembling what is implied as a whole skeleton is perhaps a bit much don't you think? I do indeed think it's a bit much, but if you examine the history of the page you will find that it was editor 68.97.5.247 who added the piece - perhaps it might be a good idea to address him/her with your concern. Did you, in fact, post such a statement on Facebook?
  • "The large number of individuals found in a tiny underground chamber, though, invites speculation on the cause. The difficulty of access as well as apparent early age of the site would seem to rule out formal burial; the only possibilities remaining are transport by water from another location, or an attempted escape from a catastrophic surface event. Interestingly, the Tswaing crater, some 200,000 years old, lies only 70km distant." The process by which the remains ended up in the chamber is indeed speculative. The sentence on the Tswaing crater has, as is noted, been added for interest - it is up to the reader to make a connection if he so desires.
  • The lack of information forthcoming, though, is not speculative, but very real, and if you would like to add any data to the article, it would be most appreciated. Paul venter (talk) 13:26, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

In response to the new note you posted on my page, I should point out that after your first note I amended the issues which you raised and which I did not consider problematic. Paul venter (talk) 17:30, 3 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your addition to Calappa calappa has been removed or altered, as it appears to closely paraphrase a copyrighted source. Limited close paraphrasing or quotation is appropriate within reason, so long as the material is clearly attributed in the text. However, longer paraphrases which are not attributed to their source may constitute copyright violation or plagiarism, and are not acceptable on Wikipedia. Such content cannot be hosted here for legal reasons; please do not upload it. You may use external websites or printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If you own the copyright to the text, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use it — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the copyright but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Thank you. --Rkitko (talk) 11:23, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Try telling me things in your own words instead of just copypasting paragraphs from the MoS - stuff I already know. The degree of similarity between my source and my contribution to the article, calls for some degree of judgement, a quality in which you have shown yourself to be lacking. Your propensity for issuing threats, on the other hand, has not diminished with the passing of years.Paul venter (talk) 13:07, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Paul, the message above is generated by {{uw-paraphrase}} and is not a threat. The following is an analysis of your contribution on this edit (parts in bold are exact):
Original source: And some predators have evolved structures that are specifically designed to deal with the more common dextral snails - they have essentially become right-handed. ... Here, one of the claws is enlarged and operates with a scissor-like action that facilitates peeling open the snail.
Your text: Calappa species have evolved claws shaped to deal with common dextral snails - they have essentially become right-handed. One of the claws is enlarged and functions with a scissor-like motion that allows a peeling open of the snail.
It's quite clear that, whether knowingly or not, you have simply replaced a few words, dropped one, and added some others -- the word more was dropped, operates became functions, action became motion, facilitates became "allows a", and you added the word of. It's not significantly different. I am sympathetic to the fact that proper paraphrasing might be difficult when vocabulary is limited (there is only one way to describe the morphology of a leaf blade), but the structure of the sentences here and the imagery used is copied from the source instead of using the source to support text written in your own words that conveys the same meaning. Cheers, Rkitko (talk) 13:33, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ryan, then show me how you would rephrase the text you criticise (as I invited you to do after your initial revert) - being sympathetic to the problem of finding new words and phrases is not enough - lead by example and rewrite the offending text. The effort you have already expended on chastising me must be considerably less than correcting my transgression. Paul venter (talk) 15:36, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Paul, I'm not the one interested in including this information in that article. I saw a case of close paraphrasing and reverted. As I noted in my edit summary, the burden is on you to write in your own words if you think the article needs that information. The effort expended informing you that close paraphrasing is unnecessary and infringes on the copyright of other authors is just as valuable as writing article content. Hopefully you now know that close paraphrasing isn't permitted under most circumstances. This will prevent future problems. Rkitko (talk) 15:57, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ryan, your response is absolutely in line with what I expected......Paul venter (talk) 16:28, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Atlantic puffin

[edit]

In 2013 I greatly expanded the article Atlantic puffin and brought it successfully to FAC. So I have an ongoing desire to see the article remain of high quality. The information you added seems inherently unlikely to me. Ravens are not usually considered as kleptoparasites in the way suggested and whether puffins have learned to behave in the way mentioned seems unlikely. Unless you can find a reliable source for the information I think it should be removed. I have raised this matter on the article's talk page, so please respond there. Another point, during the FAC process, careful attention is paid to the formatting of references. You have left a bare url in the article as a result of your addition. When editing articles, and especially FAs and GAs, it is best to adopt the format of citations already present in the article. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:33, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You are the person who wants to add the information so it is your responsibility to provide a reliable source. I tried "Corvus corax kleptoparasite Fratercula arctica" in Google Scholar and found nothing useful. You could look at this but the abstract does not mention fish being included in the raven's diet, and you would still need a source for the puffin behaviour. Do ravens steal puffins' catches? I couldn't find anything about that elsewhere. Some gulls and skuas do however so perhaps you misremembered what species of bird was involved. Or was it a throwaway remark "It almost seems as if the puffins have learned to ..."? I need convincing. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:24, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Are you unable to give the episode number and the timing within the episode? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:28, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want this to look like an edit war between the two of you, so I'll add my comments.
  • Although audiovisual material can be used as a reference, you need to give episode and timing, particularly in a featured article. Otherwise it's like give a multi-volume book as a ref without volume or page number
  • without pin-pointing the source, we don't know who has said this and with what authority. It could be an opinion from a non-expert, a mistake, or even a reflection of genuine research
  • the latter seems unlikely. Two of us at least have failed to find any published source for the claims you have made. A vague reference which can't be examined or verified is not acceptable, particulalry in an FA Jimfbleak - talk to me? 05:47, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Stereospermum kunthianum

[edit]

Hi, I think that what is now the Description section of Stereospermum kunthianum is too close a paraphrase (and in some cases a direct copyright violation) of this source. See Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. I'm reluctant to tag this with {{close paraphrase}} or {{copyvio}} as you may not have finished editing, but will have to do so if it isn't sorted out fairly soon. Peter coxhead (talk) 08:45, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This text:
" The alternate leaves are imparipinnately compound and some 25 cm long; leaflets are nearly opposite with one terminal leaflet, and with short, soft hairs, oblong to oblong-elliptic in shape, green and hairless above, yellow-green with prominent veins under, apex broadly tapering or abruptly attenuate, base tapering, margin entire or occasionally toothed in coppice growth, petiolules almost absent; petiole up to 7 cm long, caniculate above; young leaves sometimes toothed and hairy."
is, in my opinion, too close to this source and, for that reason, is too technical for Wikipedia readers. But I assume you'll be editing it further. Peter coxhead (talk) 15:50, 13 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Sceliages

[edit]

Hello there! I recently discovered Sceliages, and as a biologist interested in millipedes it is neat to learn of obligate millipede predators. However, a reference such as "Pers. comm. from Shaun A. Forgie, PhD" is unverifiable, and may constitute original research, even if true, and should be replaced by published sources. Also, the block quotes of Woodward -especially the Latin description- strike me as unnecessary and pedantic, of interest only to scarab systematists. I will do what I can to improve the article. Cheers! --Animalparty-- (talk) 20:57, 14 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Global account

[edit]

Hi Paul venter! As a Steward I'm involved in the upcoming unification of all accounts organized by the Wikimedia Foundation (see m:Single User Login finalisation announcement). By looking at your account, I realized that you don't have a global account yet. In order to secure your name, I recommend you to create such account on your own by submitting your password on Special:MergeAccount and unifying your local accounts. If you have any problems with doing that or further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me on my talk page. Cheers, —DerHexer (Talk) 20:55, 18 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Tree

[edit]

Hello Paul venter. As per WP:BRD, I have reverted the Tree article back to the version that does not mention "underground trees". This is so the subject can be discussed on the talk page and a consensus can be reached. Please note that my reversion of your edit is not a statement about my personal opinion on the matter. Please also note that if you undertake any further reversions, you will be contravening WP:3RR. Thanks. PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 20:31, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Paul, please do not keep reverting back to your preferred version while the matter is under dispute - it doesn't solve anything. In order to stop the edit war, consensus must first be gained, and as per WP:BRD, this should be done with the article in its original version. Thanks. PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 08:53, 11 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
PaleCloudedWhite, instead of telling me not to revert would you kindly be specific about YOUR reasons for removing an adequately sourced contribution? Paul venter (talk) 10:55, 11 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Order of Little Bedlam

[edit]

Dear Paul, Thanks for creating the article on the Order of Little Bedlam. It's good to see the information here. There was a problem with the caption on the image you uploaded a year ago, of Thomas Barker. The portrait is in fact of Sir Thomas Barker 1648-1707 - who was, correctly, a member of the Club - but your caption (and the image File title in Wikimedia Commons) is for Thomas Barker (meteorologist) (1722-1809) - whom it is evidently not. So I have put the correct caption on the image in the article.

But (forgive me if I am wrong) I feel sure this photographic image has been taken from the 2010 issue of the magazine in which it appeared as an illustration (Bryan Waites, 'Sir Thomas Barker and the Order of Little Bedlam', Rutland Local History and Record Society Newsletter No. 1 Pt 10 (April 2010), pp 5-6. read here), or else from an associated website - because it is cropped in the same way. I therefore wonder if the licence can really be free, as you put in the commons file? Sorry to ask but better safe than sorry! I have posted a query on the relevant talk pages. Thanks and sorry to trouble you about this. Eebahgum (talk) 12:02, 14 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Kensani00.png

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Kensani00.png.

Thank you. —Cryptic 01:17, 8 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Fixing up the new ghost shrimp article

[edit]

Hello Paul. I saw your new article on Callichirus kraussi. I fixed it up a bit to make it easier for a reader to find the info they want. I might also suggest that you start a very simple genus article on Callichirus which is not hard to do by copying and cutting down the species article and adding a species list. That way you could link to the species article from the genus one. You can use WoRMS as a source. WoRMS even gives you the citation to use at the bottom of each taxon page:

http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=367974

If you create a genus page, no matter how simple, your species article would no longer be an orphan. Best wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 11:45, 6 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of the name San Diego

[edit]

Hello! Yes, I know that you believe San Diego is named for Santiago or Saint James. But it isn't. I just added an "etymology" section to the article, with a scholarly reference that clearly shows the area was named San Diego after Saint Didacus of Alcala (better known as San Diego). The still-exiting mission in San Diego is also called San Diego de Alcala (not Santiago de Compostello or any other variant of Santiago). Thanks for caring about San Diego, but we have to go with what the references say - not what some people believe. --MelanieN (talk) 18:10, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Even if "Didacus" is a Latinized form of "Diego", which it probably is, the "Diego" or James that the city was named for was not James the Apostle, the patron saint of Spain. San Diego de Alcala was a 15th-century monk. --MelanieN (talk) 18:16, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi - that is not a compelling argument. Your scholarly reference has many 'scholarly' sources disagree with him - for one see http://www.behindthename.com/name/diego. Perhaps you might also read Santiago (name) and Diego. Failing to mention 'Santiago' in the etymology section and linking 'San Diego' directly with 'Saint Didacus' is blatantly ignoring dissident views and is a philological travesty. Sefapanosaurus

[edit]

Hallo Paul venter! I noticed you created the article Sefapanosaurus zastronensis. In the describing scientific article, the authors mention that A.W. Keyser found the fossils between 1936 and 1948. This obviously cannot be the famous palaeontologist André Werner Keyser. As you created the latter's article also, I wondered whether you knew who this other man (?) is. An elder relative maybe?

Greetings, --MWAK (talk) 18:21, 29 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MWAK - Yes, I noticed that.......I've been offline for the last 4 days, but will ask Bruce Rubidge about that tomorrow. I should think it was just a careless blunder, but a bad one since it implies that HE misidentified the fossils.

cheers

Thank you! In any case, it would be interesting to determine the exact identity of the discoverer.--MWAK (talk) 15:49, 3 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Art Jewelry Forum

Hello, I am working on a pet project to help digitize information about the field of metalsmithing+jewelry. I started with making a page for Art jewelry forum (AJF), and have a list of artists that I would like to make pages for as well. The AJF page has been nominated for deletion because it is questioned if the organization is "notable". I am reaching out to you because I saw that you edited some pages that relate to studio craft, and thought you may have an informed opinion (unlike the mathematician who nominated the page for deletion) about whether or not it is a "notable organization". Hi there. Thanks for starting the article Serenichthys. I deleted the verbatim text of the abstract, as it seemed excessive use of Non-free content that could easily be reworded. Also, there seems to be a good amount of content that is not about Serenichthys kowiensis , i.e. content that might better be incorporated in articles such as Coelacanth, Rhabdoderma, etc. Also, don't forget to cite sources with footnotes: if there are multiple sources, a minimum of one footnote per paragraph helps to keep correct attribution. I had hoped that the message "This article is actively undergoing a major edit for a short while. You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. Replaceable fair use File:Stereospermum kunthianum02.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Stereospermum kunthianum02.jpg.

Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 19:32, 28 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Edit war warning

[edit]

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Aloe vera. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Please be particularly aware that Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made.

Jytdog (talk) 07:25, 31 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Strychnos pungens00.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Strychnos pungens00.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 15:55, 14 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

April 2017

Information icon Hello, I'm Ahunt. I wanted to let you know that one or more external links you added to Multirotor‎ have been removed because they seemed to be inappropriate for an encyclopedia. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page, or take a look at our guidelines about links. Thank you. - Ahunt (talk) 16:55, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ahunt, would you please explain why you feel an external link is inappropriate for Wikipedia, and cite a reference from the MoS. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paul venter (talkcontribs)
Sure, it is linked in the note I left you above at WP:ELNO, which says "5. Individual web pages[6] that primarily exist to sell products or services, or to web pages with objectionable amounts of advertising. For example, the mobile phone article should not link to web pages that mostly promote or advertise cell-phone products or services." Also WP:LINKSPAM which says: "Adding external links to an article or user page for the purpose of promoting a website or a product is not allowed, and is considered to be spam." It is clearly not appropriate to add links to products for sale when the article is on the general subject. I have removed the link as per WP:VANDTYPES. You can note that explicitly says: "Adding or continuing to add spam external links is vandalism if the activity continues after a warning. A spam external link is one added to a page mainly for the purpose of promoting a website, product or a user's interests rather than to improve the page editorially." Future insertions will be treated as vandalism as per that Wikipedia policy. - Ahunt (talk) 12:05, 20 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Please do not attack other editors, as you did at Talk:Multirotor#Subjective_decisions_on_spam_external_links. Comment on content, not on contributors. Personal attacks damage the community and deter users. Please stay cool and keep this in mind while editing. Thank you. - Ahunt (talk) 14:08, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Clare Abbott00.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Clare Abbott00.jpg.

Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:31, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Blanking

[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Smjg. I noticed that you recently removed all content from Oecanthus rufescens. Blank pages are harmful to Wikipedia because they have a tendency to confuse readers. If it is a duplicate article, please redirect it to an appropriate existing page. If the page has been vandalised, please revert it to the last legitimate version. If you feel that the content of a page is inappropriate, please edit the page and replace it with appropriate content. If you believe there is no hope for the page, please see the deletion policy for how to proceed. If you wish to experiment, please use the sandbox. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Daniel Rossouw Kannemeyer, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages San and Alfred Brown (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Predatory journals

[edit]

Predatory journals, by definition, do not have functional peer review. They accept articles based on payment, not merit. They presumptively fail WP:RS, and this has been the consensus in several past discussions of the subject. On Wikipedia, they are often added by the publishers or authors (OMICS Group are site banned as a result). Guy (Help!) 12:27, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on PrncesRachel, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. power~enwiki (π, ν) 00:45, 24 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:10, 6 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Georges Léonnec00.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Georges Léonnec00.jpg.

Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:18, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

References

[edit]
Just follow the steps 1, 2 and 3 as shown and fill in the details

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. Remember that when adding content about health, please only use high-quality reliable sources as references. We typically use review articles, major textbooks and position statements of national or international organizations (There are several kinds of sources that discuss health: here is how the community classifies them and uses them). WP:MEDHOW walks you through editing step by step. A list of resources to help edit health content can be found here. The edit box has a built-in citation tool to easily format references based on the PMID or ISBN.

  1. While editing any article or a wikipage, on the top of the edit window you will see a toolbar which says "cite" click on it
  2. Then click on "templates",
  3. Choose the most appropriate template and fill in the details beside a magnifying glass followed by clicking said button,
  4. If the article is available in Pubmed Central, you have to add the pmc parameter manually -- click on "show additional fields" in the template and you will see the "pmc" field. Please add just the number and don't include "PMC".

We also provide style advice about the structure and content of medicine-related encyclopedia articles. The welcome page is another good place to learn about editing the encyclopedia. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Joseph Burke (botanist), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page William Hooker (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Stanley Charles Seagrief01a.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Stanley Charles Seagrief01a.jpg.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Francisco Javier Matis requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

The new Johann Jakob Walther (artist) article

[edit]

Hi Paul. I just compared the Johann Jakob Walther (artist) article you created today and the article Johann Walter (painter). Is there any chance these two articles might refer to the same person? They both worked for Count Johann of Nassau-Idstein in the seventeenth century and they both produced floral anthologies, two of which survive today. Best regards — Hebrides (talk) 20:41, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hebrides, Undoubtedly the same. The Wiki search engine and Google search both missed this, perhaps because most reliable sources spelled 'Walther' with an 'h'. I will merge the articles after looking again into the Walter/Walther spelling issue. Thank you for the heads-up. Cheers Paul venter (talk) 04:47, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • History of the company (when did it begin, what happened to it?) - maybe about 1810 to 1880?
  • Glasgow, or Edinburgh - see https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/1824-beauties-rev-ralph-erskine-1732808127 - appears Edinburgh from circa 1843 onwards; New York enterprise of Fullarton, MacNab & Co; printing enterprise of Fullarton and MacNab, Leith Walk, Edinburgh
  • Connection and separate existence with Khull, Blackie and any other Blackie connections - see Blackie_and_Son; "Blackie, Fullarton, and Co" in late 1820s to 1830
  • Legal case of Atlas Company against Fullarton
  • Connection with the Secession Church (Seceders, Associate Presbytery) as Fullarton's published works by Ralph and Ebenezer Erskine, John Brown of Haddington, and Ralph Wardlaw, as well as other evangelical authors from Scotland and elsewhere

I have had some 70 items for sale over the past 20 years with Fullarton included in the publisher name. Can provide records sorted by date showing different associations of names during the 19th century. --PeterR2 (talk) 10:23, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article John Viney has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication of notability. WP:SIGCOV lacking. Orphaned for a decade.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
