Administrators' newsletter – October 2024
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2024).
- Administrator elections are a proposed new process for selecting administrators, offering an alternative to requests for adminship (RfA). The first trial election will take place in October 2024, with candidate sign-up from October 8 to 14, a discussion phase from October 22 to 24, and SecurePoll voting from October 25 to 31. For questions or to help out, please visit the talk page at Wikipedia talk:Administrator elections.
- Following a discussion, the speedy deletion reason "File pages without a corresponding file" has been moved from criterion G8 to F2. This does not change what can be speedily deleted.
- A request for comment is open to discuss whether there is a consensus to have an administrator recall process.
- The arbitration case Historical elections has been closed.
- An arbitration case regarding Backlash to diversity and inclusion has been opened.
- Editors are invited to nominate themselves to serve on the 2024 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission until 23:59 October 8, 2024 (UTC).
- If you are interested in stopping spammers, please put MediaWiki talk:Spam-whitelist and MediaWiki talk:Spam-blacklist on your watchlist, and help out when you can.
File:EvangeliaPlatanioti2024.jpg
[edit]Hi Whpq. You tagged File:EvangeliaPlatanioti2024.jpg for not having permission, but the uploader subsequently added a link to www{{npd}}
template. The photo can be seen used here, and I'm guessing that it's a copyvio eligble for speedy deletion per WP:F9 because there's nothing to indicate in Sportal.gp's terms of service that its images are released under an acceptable free license. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:51, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
- Yes it is a copyvio. The terms of use are pretty clear on this being copyrighted material. -- Whpq (talk) 13:39, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
Hi Whpq,
I'd appreciate your advice on the above, which was nominated for Speedy Deletion by another user without specifying a valid criterion and so untagged by you. Having looked at the history etc. this appears to have been written by the subject's 15yo son and then draftified by perhaps a relatively inexperienced new page patroller, when I think it should probably have been speedy deleted under A7 instead (per WP:Drafts "don't draftify junk") as it's a single sentence, wrongly titled, makes no assertion of notability, sole contributor has a COI, may be self-promotion (the author's user page was also a draft autobiography before it was blanked)... Now it's a draft I don't think it's eligible for A7 but speedy del does seem the right way forward. Do I need to PROD / xfD it? YFB ¿ 00:12, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
- WP:PROD only applies to articles and files. You could nominate it at WP:MFD, but I would recommend to just ignore it. Nobody appears to be doing any editing on the draft so it will disappear via WP:G13 in six months without need to waste other editors time in reviewing a deletion nomination. See also Wikipedia:Drafts are not checked for notability or sanity. -- Whpq (talk) 00:28, 17 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'd missed that about PROD scope. Will ignore as suggested. YFB ¿ 05:34, 17 October 2024 (UTC)

CSD vandalism tag on User:Charlesbeaulne08/sandbox
[edit]@Whpq
Check the last paragraph, first sentence; subtle vandalism which makes it obvious the entire article is a prank. Qcne (talk) 15:46, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for pointing that out. I've deleted it as A10 rather than A3 as that material is disparaging and not sourced. -- Whpq (talk) 15:48, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks! Qcne (talk) 15:50, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
Invitation to participate in a research
[edit]Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.
You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind Regards,
BGerdemann (WMF) (talk) 19:22, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
File:Vee Parker.jpg
[edit]Hi Whpq. What do you think is the best way to deal with File:Vee Parker.jpg? It seems like a copyrighted screenshot that's incorrectly licensed as {{cc-by-sa-4.0}}
. It might be OK to convert to {{Non-free television screenshot}}
, but the source is a bit sketchy. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:11, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- The license is obviously not correct. Fandom is CC licensed but not the screen shots. You could convert to nonfree with the assumption this is a true screen shot (very likely true), or if you have doubts about sourcing, you could just replace it with an image with verifiable sourcing. -- Whpq (talk) 13:24, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking a look at this. I'll try to explain this to the file's uploader. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:17, 6 November 2024 (UTC)

ArbCom Notice
[edit]You are involved in a recently filed request for arbitration. Please review the request at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case#Mistreated and Inhumanity blocking to Royiswariii and, if you wish to do so, enter your statement and any other material you wish to submit to the Arbitration Committee. As threaded discussion is not permitted on most arbitration pages, please ensure that you make all comments in your own section only. Additionally, the guide to arbitration and the Arbitration Committee's procedures may be of use.
Thanks, Royiswariii Talk! 05:45, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- The case request has been declined as premature because other dispute resolution steps would need to be used first before requesting arbitration. SilverLocust 💬 10:38, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
Opperman Unicar
[edit]It seems that the section of information regarding the Opperman Unicar was recently deleted from the Opperman page, due to it being largely copied from the Williams Microcars website. That is actually my website, and I am also the one that put the info and photos on Wikipedia, so that there would be an easy-to-find, comprehensive source of Opperman automobile data and history. Otherwise there is basically no other source of accurate data regarding the Unicar, due to the age and extreme rarity of the cars, along with several bits of misinformation that has been spread over the years. So if permission is needed to use that deleted information, then I obviously give it (as I wrote it), and it would be excellent to have it restored, if possible. Guards951 (talk) 21:58, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Guards951 (talk page watcher) While it's okay to donate the text to Wikipedia, you would have to be okay with someone hypothetically printing out the text and selling it; you would also have to be okay with someone actually and inevitably changing the text itself. One copyright license compatible with this is the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License.
- Given the fact that Wikipedia is an educational encyclopedia, and the Williams Microcar website is a personal website, it's probably better to use the {{COI edit}} template on the aricle talk page to request someone rephrase what you said with a more formal tonality.
