I have been editing on Wikipedia since 7 February 2005.
I support Wikipedia:Process is Important and I urge all wikipedians to read it and consider it before undertaking out-of-process actions, particularly in regard to administrative functions.
I am interested in legal topics, science fiction and fantasy, as well as various other subjects. I am a professional APL programmer, and I have been the chair of ACM's SIGAPL.
-David E. Siegel
On 4 July 2015, I joined the Wikipedia Ten Year Society. |
Adminship
[edit]As of 6 October 2005, I am an admin (janitor) here on the English-language Wikipedia. So if you have a problem that I might be able to help you with, or if you think I have made any mistake in my carrying out admin responsibilities, or in my use of the admin tools, please leave me a note on my talk page.

Recovery of deleted articles
[edit]If you need access to a Wikipedia article that has been deleted, ask me. If it's not a copyright violation, libel, or personal information, and has not been deleted as a suspected biographies of living persons violation, I will normally userfy the article for you.
Note that using the text to recreate any deleted article may automatically qualify them for speedy deletion, and copies of previously deleted content that are being used solely for long-term archival purposes may be subject to deletion as Wikipedia is not a free web host. The MediaWiki website has a list of wiki sites which may be used to host your content.
Note also that I will place {{userspace draft}} on all restored articles. This will, among other things, add the NOINDEX parameter, and will prevent Google and other robots-compliant search engines from indexing the page.
If you want me to restore an article, place a note on my user talk page. Please give the exact name of the article before it was deleted if you know it. Please sign your request with four tildes (~~~~)
Education Project
[edit]I have recently (as of January 2014) been accepted as an online volunteer by the Wikipedia Education Project (not to be confused with the Wiki-project of a similar name). In this role I will attempt to assist students in particular courses.
My current courses
[edit]None.
Digital subscriptions
[edit]I have several digital subscriptions to news sources. If you want info from one of these, or the text of an article for use as a source in Wikipedia editing, I am in principle willing to try to locate available info and send it to an editor in good standing by email. If you want me to do this, please leave a request on my user talk page. Please indicate the specific name of the article if you know it, or the desired search parameters, in as much detail as you know them. You must have the "Email this user" function active, and therefore you must have a registered Wikipedia account and use it to leave the request. I do not promise any particular response time. It will be on a "when i can get to it" basis. See Resource Exchange for an alternative source. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 20:46, 15 October 2019 (UTC)
New York Times
[edit]As of 2016, I have a digital subscription to the New York Times, with full access to digitized back issues from 1861 on. I may be willing to search for sources in those archives, or to provide information about a particular archived article, in proper cases. DES (talk) 00:22, 9 April 2016 (UTC)
Washington Post
[edit]As of 2019, i also have a digital subscription to the Washington Post. Its archives are not as extensive as those of the NY Times, but I will provide article access within reason if I can.
London Times
[edit]As of 2019, i also have a digital subscription to the London Times. I am new to this site, but I will provide article access within reason if I can.
Typos
[edit]I am a poor typist when typing at speed (I am particularly prone to two-character transpositions), and my editing setup does not make it easy for me to spell-check my Wikipedia edits. (I routinely spell-check most other things I write.) I do spell-check major edits off line, but I generally do not spell-check smaller edits nor talk page posts. I apologize for any unclarity or cleanup work that results -- feel free to ask me to clean up after myself in articles.
Alternate accounts
[edit]- User:DES-Public For use in public venues, and for non-admin tasks and to observe interfaces from a non-admin perspective.
- User:DES~enwiki Created as User:DES, a doppelgänger account, but preempted and moved during global username unification, as an account with this name existed on some other wiki.
Mentoring
[edit]I am open to mentoring relatively new users who are sincerely interested in learning and how to contribute better.
Current mentees
[edit]
(Feel free to ping me if there is a problem with any of my mentees)
Editathons
[edit]Recently I have found it both useful and enjoyable to attend editathons held in my vicinity when I can. Below is a list, possibly incomplete, of event pages for edit-a-thons or Wikipedia Workshops that I have attended.
