Blocked an IP providing valid Reference Desk answers?

[edit]

I noticed that an IP who contributed valid discussion on the Reference Desk has had their IP blocked and Reference Desk edits reverted (despite their answers not appearing to be vandalism). I just wanted to check if this was intentional. The user is Special:Contributions/92.19.168.253. The reason I'm interested is because the user provided a detailed answer to my reference desk question that I wanted to reply to, but since it got reverted, now I'm at an impasse. Thanks --81.219.4.25 (talk) 17:16, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your concern. I'm afraid to say that the person who typed that response to you has been banned from Wikipedia for many years. Per WP:BAN, banned users are not allowed to contribute anywhere, even if some of their contributions are helpful. Since you got your answer from them, and liked it, there's no need to keep it around anymore. If you have any more questions or concerns, please let me know. --Jayron32 17:20, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. Thank you for your reply. --81.219.4.25 (talk) 21:51, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The problem here is that you have people giving ultimatums. If you want to encourage people to ignore you, issue an ultimatum. If you want them to be helpful, try a different approach. Since the ultimatums have been given, I think the cat is out of the bag on that one. Expect no one to do anything; and the reason they won't is because you have demanded it. If people simply had let them work on it on its own time, or if people had simply asked for a timetable from the tech people, and then said "looks good, thank you very much" when they gave you a timetable, it would be done on that time table. Once someone decided "YOU WILL DO THIS BY MAY 3!", all of those tech people simultaneously said "fuck you" and decided they are never going to do your job. Should they act that way? Who cares. Anyone who has ever dealt with any other human being successfully would have predicted they would do that, and that's the only point: if it is predictable that they would drag their feet when people issue ultimatums, don't be surprised when they do exactly that. It could have been done on time. Now that everyone is getting emotional and making demands it won't be. Congrats. --Jayron32 12:52, 25 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

CIR

[edit]

Hello. I see that you're contributing some much needed improvement to CIR. I think your changes would be clearer if you reinstated the previous version of the text and then do a single edit with your new version. Either that or use the 'in use' tag. I'm concerned that it's going to be hard for editors who are less familiar with the previous version to understand what's been changed and to discuss it. SPECIFICO talk 12:47, 27 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If I have removed something that you think should be returned, please do so. Much of what I had removed had the tone of a personal essay, rather than a guidance page for wikipedia users, and I think the tone has improved by my edits. Feel free to fix any mistakes I may have made as well! --Jayron32 12:51, 27 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I agree that it needs fixing, and it's great that you're doing it. I just don't want to jump in and reinstate something that you are about to reinstate in an improved form. SPECIFICO talk 13:11, 27 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm pretty much done with what I needed to do. Feel free to edit away! --Jayron32 13:12, 27 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Blocking lifted, but I still see that I'm 'Blocked'. Please assist.

[edit]

Hello. I haven't been on Wikipedia for a few months. When I logged in I saw that I am still 'blocked' from editing, but as of my last discussion with you and another editor, I was cleared to edit. Is this an 'autoblock' or other? Can you please advise me what the current status is? The last entry between us indicated I was clear to start editing again. I would like to start a new article for Rabbi Steve Leder. Thank you for your assistance. EllenSheehy (talk) 20:11, 30 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – May 2018

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2018).

Administrator changes

added None
removed ChochopkCoffeeGryffindorJimpKnowledge SeekerLankiveilPeridonRjd0060

Guideline and policy news

  • The ability to create articles directly in mainspace is now indefinitely restricted to autoconfirmed users.
  • A proposal is being discussed which would create a new "event coordinator" right that would allow users to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit.

Technical news

  • AbuseFilter has received numerous improvements, including an OOUI overhaul, syntax highlighting, ability to search existing filters, and a few new functions. In particular, the search feature can be used to ensure there aren't existing filters for what you need, and the new equals_to_any function can be used when checking multiple namespaces. One major upcoming change is the ability to see which filters are the slowest. This information is currently only available to those with access to Logstash.
  • When blocking anonymous users, a cookie will be applied that reloads the block if the user changes their IP. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. This currently only occurs when hard-blocking accounts.
  • The block notice shown on mobile will soon be more informative and point users to a help page on how to request an unblock, just as it currently does on desktop.
  • There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.

Obituaries

  • Lankiveil (Craig Franklin) passed away in mid-April. Lankiveil joined Wikipedia on 12 August 2004 and became an administrator on 31 August 2008. During his time with the Wikimedia community, Lankiveil served as an oversighter for the English Wikipedia and as president of Wikimedia Australia.

Medeis?

[edit]

I saw your comment about Medeis. I've had occasional emails with Medeis, the last one being a number of months ago [late February]. It's been two months since Medeis' last activity here. I sent a new email a week or so ago, and have heard nothing. Beyond that, there's no way to know, that I know of. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots14:16, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed. I have been worried since I noticed she vanished; her latest posts give no indication she was intending to take a long sabatical from Wikipedia; and I have been concerned about her well being given that it isn't in character for her to just disappear for long stretches at a time. --Jayron32 14:18, 2 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I just sent you an email message of some importance (nothing to do with ANI or any other editing topic, nor about Medeis or any other known user). ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots21:14, 3 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, you can probably ignore it. It was about a hack attempt, but there seems to have been a lot of that going on today. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots21:38, 3 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, like it happened to everyone today. Seems like someone set up some kind of attack on Wikipedia in general. You can ignore it. --Jayron32 00:27, 4 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's been a month since the discussion of the changes took place on the article's talk page. With the exception of user Mimudy24 and her sockpuppet ailsick21, the rest of the editors have agreed that the changes which I've proposed were valid. So therefore I'm making the request to unprotect the article. Fukenash (talk) 15:11, 6 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Can you point me to the SPI our checkuser investigation that shows that they are the same person? Also, I don't see any evidence that you have brought in neutral editors to evaluate the situation. I'm willing to unprotect in the case of consensus, but two editors is not really a consensus. --Jayron32 21:27, 6 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea what is SPI. Both user Mimudy24 and Ailsick21, a newly created account, are fond of writing lengthy posts which veers into intricate details that only a dedicated fan of the subject would be familiar with. It's pretty clear both accounts belong to the same person who rejects any content that they deemed are negative to the subject. And could you please explain what do you mean by "brought in neutral editors to evaluate the situation" and "not really a consensus"??? If you look closely at the edit history of articles on Korean actors, you will realize that there aren't many registered users editing the articles. The two other editors, users Alexanderlee and Heolkpop, who both seem to be regular editors of Korean entertainment articles, were simply kind enough to chip in their thoughts on this matter. It has been a while since the discussion took place and I doubt there will be any more additional opinions so I'd like to close it and everyone can move on. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fukenash (talkcontribs) 16:14, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
  • There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
  • It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.

Arbitration

  • A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Wikipedia (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Wikipedia between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.

Poor Attitude

[edit]

In regards to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:In_the_news/Candidates#(Closed)_PC_Party_Wins_Ontario_Election , I'd have to say our interaction was most displeasurable. Your angry statement:

"You're expecting us to post an substandard article to the main page, with obvious and easily fixable errors? In the time it took you to argue with me, you could have already fixed the article and then you'd have had my support. Why are you so opposed to making Wikipedia articles better?"

That isn't at all true. The CBC isn't a 'substandard' source, and neither was that article. I do wish to make Wikipedia better, and wasn't sure why your tone is so disagreeable. You were not at all clear at what you were unclear about, so I really didn't understand what else to say.

User NorthernFalcon understood I just made the nomination in good faith. I'm not a very prominent Wikipedian, and your lack of compassion and understanding coupled with your personal attack is quite upsetting.

GrandKokla (talk) 19:48, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I asked you to update the infobox. You refused to do so. I'm sorry you find the improvement of Wikipedia articles so onerous. The article was not going to be posted until after you fixed that. It's too bad that winning some imaginary argument you thought you had with me was more important to you than actually improving encyclopedia articles. Too bad, really.--Jayron32 00:15, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's not that I refused to, the point you made wasn't clear at all. I'm not sure why you're having a hard time comprehending that. The article wasn't going to be posted no matter what, and that's understandable. I don't know why you're getting so belligerent, but that's you and that's the state of your life. It doesn't matter that your negative in this way to me. It's laughable that you post "Trust in good faith" while acting like this. Sigh. I've never seen adminship get to someone like this. Oh well, I'll be contacting the Arbitration Committee about your personal attacks. GrandKokla (talk) 00:05, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You have fun with that. Have a nice day!--Jayron32 11:45, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator changes

Bureaucrat changes

removed AndrevanEVula

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC about the deletion of drafts closed with a consensus to change the wording of WP:NMFD. Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus that the {{promising draft}} template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.

Technical news

  • Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
  • Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon () in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates.
  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June).

Miscellaneous

  • Currently around 20% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 17% a year ago. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless if you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

20th-century Western painting

[edit]

Hi Jayron32. You protected 20th-century Western painting to prevent any further edit warring from happening. I'm not disputing that, but I'm wondering how it affects the implementation of Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2018 June 25#File:'Natura Morta', oil on canvas painting by Giorgio Morandi, 1956, private collection.jpg. One of the non-free uses of the file being discussed in that particular FFD was in that particular article. The FFD close by Jo-Jo Eumerus was to remove file from all articles other than Giorgio Morandi, but the file hasn't been removed from the 20th-century article yet, probably because of the page protection. The non-free use rationale for that particular use, however, has been removed from the file's page. This means that the file is likely to be flagged as WP:NFCC#10c violation for that use by a bot until either (1) a rationale for the non-free use is re-added to the file's page, or (2) the file is removed from the article. FWIW, the FFD was ongoing well before the recent spat of EW started and doesn't appear to be directly related, even though the editors involved in both might be the same. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:37, 4 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Jay, is it acceptable to 'close' (hat) comments, such as this and this, simply because they include posts of mine? Sca (talk) 13:46, 1 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Side discussions, irrelevant tangents, jokes, and sniping at others is generally not conducive to arriving at a consensus, so probably don't need to happen in the first place. Insofar as the hatted text isn't producing a consensus building discussion, it's fine to hat it. You've ascribed a motive which is not at all apparent, and there's no evidence you were singled out here, so I don't see why you thought that just because you just happened to be part of those irrelevant discussions, they were closed because of you. At least, I see nothing to indicate that. --Jayron32 14:22, 1 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Because I had just (a few seconds earlier!) hatted this blast of rancorous chatter involving him and two others that contributed nothing to the discussion. Please see also this comment. Sca (talk) 15:32, 1 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I see that comment saying that someone else is inventing motives not present in the text either. Adopting the imaginary events of other people as your own is largely an unproductive process. --Jayron32 16:35, 1 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK, but there was nothing contentious or antagonistic in my deliberately understated (in small type) comments in those two sections – one was an obvious joke – and no reason to "close" them. And BTW, what's up with "closing" a section instead of simply hiding (hatting) it? Closing nominations = SOP, but I haven't seen closing sections of discussions before. Sca (talk) 20:28, 1 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think we're just talking circles around each other here. If you're seeking redress for a perceived wrong, please do so in a public forum like WP:ANI rather than through back channels like my talk page. If you're not interested in seeking redress, then its best to just let this drop. My advice is to move on and not worry about it. --Jayron32 12:52, 2 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – August 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2018).

Administrator changes

added Sro23

Guideline and policy news

  • After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Wikipedia.
  • Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.

A User Falsely Complained Against Me

[edit]

Hi Jayron, I had an editing dispute on the Infowars TP with Slatersteven. I see he has complained about me, and you have answered him. (I'm a new user.) I thought part of the Infowars page violated NPOV. I stated why I thought this. Slatersteven and I argued back and forth a few times on the TP which, as I understand, is not a violation. He then came over to my user TP and threatened that I was doing something wrong and should better stop. We went back and forth a little and he kept pulling previous things I wrote to try to discredit me. I NEVER intended to do anything politcal. I proposed to make the page a little more neutral, as per NPOV. He kept, however, accusing me of being "tendentious", which quite offends me. He obviously decided not to assume good faith. I can't help that. Please see my TP, as well as my discussion near the bottom of the Infowars TP. You will see that it didn't go so well for me, as very few people actually engaged my opinion. But, Slatersteven took it further. Not to complain. Just FYI. --Intellectual Property Theft (talk) 15:26, 10 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:15, 11 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jayron32. I just saw the rejection of the David Patrikarakos entry. I had a look at it myself and understand the referencing concerns. Leo E. Strang

[edit]

Someone did a short biography of my father on Wikipedia which is entirely focused on his 4 yr. as the Kent State Univ. Head Football Coach ('64-'67). It makes no mention of his career prior to that. He was one of the nation's top high school football coaches. He won 3 state and 2 national HS football titles during his six years as the Massillon Washington HS (Ohio) head coach ('58-'63). He was hired at Massillon on the recommendation of former Massillon player and coach, Paul Brown. Prior to Massillon, he was head coach at E. Cleveland Shaw, Upper Sandusky, and Caldwell. He was a football innovator: first use of helmet decals (multicolored stars used at Shaw), first use of a team/school logo helmet decal (leaping Tiger at Massillon), and first use of helmet reward stickers (small stars on front of helmet used at Massillon), first use of colored football shoes (red at Shaw and white at Massillon), first use of a barefooted soccer style kicker (at Shaw), first use of a defensive analyzation system (handheld at Upper and Shaw then converted to an electronic circuit board at Massillon) to determine best play to call based on defense opponent used, use of instamatic camera during games to help determine opponent's defensive alignment to offensive formations (at Massillon), and others. Was the winning coach for the North in the 1960 North/South Ohio HS All Star, coaching Paul Warfield and against Roger Staubach, both of whom went on the become NFL Hall of Fame members. Overall HS record (all as head coach): 109 W, 26 L, and 1 tie.'59 Ohio HS Coach of the Year. I recently completed extensive research regarding my father's coaching career and would like to have it included in a revised biography of him. However, I am not able to do the edits myself and wondered it if was something you or someone else with Wikipedia might do if I sent you my father's updated resume (for which I have citations/links/authorities)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hotshot11!! (talkcontribs) 15:50, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have some source material about your father's life I could read to help use to expand the article?--Jayron32 17:33, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Would e-mailing his resume and source materials (such as the Helmet Hut website that had a few articles in which he was referenced) to you be the best way to do it? If so, how about if you reach out to me at carter.strang@tuckerellis.com and we can go from there? Much appreciated! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hotshot11!! (talkcontribs) 14:05, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'm afraid that the information needs to be both published (that is, freely available in books, magazines, websites, etc.) and in reliable sources (you'll want to read that link). So emailing me his resume does no good, that isn't a reliable, published source. Anything you have that is a reliable, published source would help though. If you can send me links or other information about how I would find that information, that would help a LOT... --Jayron32 14:52, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This article uses many primary sources that are contradicted by high-quality secondary sources. You reverted all my edits and asserted that primary sources from certain journals ought not be removed. Please give me an example of a citation that I removed that is a high-quality secondary source and that has not been deprecated.

You removed sources to highly respected medical journals such as JAMA. Please read WP:MEDRS and stop trying to force your own unique views on Wikipedia by pretending that sources that say things you don't like aren't reliable. --Jayron32 11:33, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – September 2018

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2018).

Administrator changes

added None
removed AsterionCrisco 1492KFKudpungLizRandykittySpartaz
renamed Optimist on the runVoice of Clam

Interface administrator changes

added AmorymeltzerMr. StradivariusMusikAnimalMSGJTheDJXaosflux

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.

Technical news

  • Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
  • Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example is article_text which is now page_title.
  • Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is page_age.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of Checkuser and Oversight appointments. The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. The deadline to submit an application is 23:59 UTC, 12 September, and the candidates that move forward will be published on-wiki for community comments on 18 September.

Hi. I've always been worndering about how to edit pages on Wikipedia. There have been instances when I created a page and it got deleted immediately. I wonder how to prevent that from happening. Thanks in anticipation atkuriakose (talk) 11:48, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The primary reason that a page gets deleted is that it is about a topic which is not obviously appropriate for Wikipedia. The key to writing good articles is first choosing a topic which is appropriate. Which topics are appropriate? It's not that hard, it is those topics for which there is enough reliable source texts which you can use to research and write a comprehensive article. That is, find a topic where you find lots of books, journal articles, magazine articles, etc. about it. That is, lots of really good text that you can cite in the article and so that the article has enough verifiable text to be a reasonable encyclopedia article. If the topic you are trying to write about doesn't have enough source material to work from, it will likely get deleted. --Jayron32 11:58, 11 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Wikipedia and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.
  • Because of a data centre test, you will be able to read but not edit the Wikimedia projects for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
  • The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
  • Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
  • Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.

Reference Desk: Languages

[edit]

Hi Jayron32,

I was going to ask a question at the Languages Reference Desk but you have edit protected it. Would it be possible for you to paste my question there please (I can't as an IP rather than an account user)? My question was as follows:

'Hi all!

I have a quick question on Latin translation that I am struggling with. I found the phrase "cultu fastuque pene regio procedentes" in a work by William of Newburgh, but since the work is a medieval text and my Latin is severely limited I was unable to understand it: I would be grateful for a translation.

RD protection notice

[edit]

Hey, it's a problem in the template itself. I'll see if I can find it. --Jayron32 18:27, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's a horrifying mess of nested templates. I can't even figure out where the text of that notice is called from. Try posting at WP:AN to see if someone can help. I may do just that. --Jayron32 18:30, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi J. I know what a nightmare trying to untangle something like that can be. You might try the WP:VPT before AN. I hope someone can get to the root of the problem. Regards. MarnetteD|Talk 19:07, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oops - I hadn't seen this Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#Spelling error in template when I wrote the above. I'm glad your post got things fixed. Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk 19:13, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jayron, new question: would you consider editing the RD headers to make them more user-friendly during the extended protection - currently, people who don't meet the threshold cannot ask questions, but I don't think that's well signposted.

Currently, the bright blue "Ready? Ask a new question!" button still makes it seem that they can ask their question. But this is only true for veteran accounts. If a non-veteran clicks it, they get a info page that offers them no option to ask their question ([2]).

The protection notice also offers people the option to submit an edit request, but that link, (to [3]) takes them to a wall of jargon whose most prominent point essentially says "you are in the wrong place". (I think possibly this happens because the Ref Desk talk page had to be protected too?)

Anyway, just wondering if there is a way to make this more user friendly.

  • Add something to the edit notice to say something like "If you aren't registered, or haven't been registered for 30 days and made at least 500 edits, you must wait until the protection is lifted before you can ask your question. Currently, the protection will be lifted on October 20."
  • Change text on "Ready?" button to say something like "Registered and confirmed users, ask your question here"
FYI, some data showing that 60% of question askers will run into this problem

Some data, in case you find it helpful. In September, the following 57 people asked questions on the Humanities desk. If that ratio holds, currently 60% of the people trying to ask questions won't be able to.

Suggestion/observation with regards to the posting process at ITN

[edit]

To let you know - I made a proposal at the ITN talk page based on principles/observations which were, in part, derived from ideas that I have witnessed you expressing on recent nominations. You seem quite approachable in that sense, so I'd love to hear your thoughts with regards to that - even if those thoughts are letting me know that I've made the suggestion on the wrong talk page, or if my proposal is redundant altogether for x, y, or z reason(s). :)

Spelling

[edit]

Hi again. I was a bit puzzled by your edit summary here. When you say the spelling of "travelling" with one 'l' on a British English article was a "nonerror", does this mean you are unaware of different spelling variants in English? Amakuru and Dank will be as surprised as I am if that is the case. Please clarify; ignorance can be cured but stupidity cannot, and I'd be sad to think it was the latter you were suffering from. Thanks. --MarchOrDie (talk) 19:53, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Jayron was mistaken, it was clearly an error, and fixing it took no time, quite why we had to have all the drama and denials is beyond me, but that's the toxic environment at ERRORS for you. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:04, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Competence is required, but the same page also says don't come down on someone like a ton of bricks as soon as they make a mistake so let's not turn this more nasty than it needs to be. I think we can move along from this quite nicely, and perhaps there won't be such a drama around it next time.  — Amakuru (talk) 21:51, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's well said. As long as the error is acknowledged and does not recur I think that's the best way forward. --MarchOrDie (talk) 21:56, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad the three of you were able to work out this problem amongst yourselves while I was away for a few hours. Yes, that is what happened. Downside is the error was on the page for a few hours more than necessary, because of your misunderstanding of the conventions of spelling. Let's try to do better in future, eh? --MarchOrDie (talk) 07:19, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – November 2018

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (October 2018).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Partial blocks is now available for testing on the Test Wikipedia. The new functionality allows you to block users from editing specific pages. Bugs may exist and can be reported on the local talk page or on Meta. A discussion regarding deployment to English Wikipedia will be started by community liaisons sometime in the near future.
  • A user script is now available to quickly review unblock requests.
  • The 2019 Community Wishlist Survey is now accepting new proposals until November 11, 2018. The results of this survey will determine what software the Wikimedia Foundation's Community Tech team will work on next year. Voting on the proposals will take place from November 16 to November 30, 2018. Specifically, there is a proposal category for admins and stewards that may be of interest.

Arbitration

  • Eligible editors will be invited to nominate themselves as candidates in the 2018 Arbitration Committee Elections starting on November 4 until November 13. Voting will begin on November 19 and last until December 2.
  • The Arbitration Committee's email address has changed to arbcom-en@wikimedia.org. Other email lists, such as functionaries-en and clerks-l, remain unchanged.

Hello Jayron32. I 'd like to invite you to the talk page of EOKA where a new text, proposed by me, re-written from the scratch is proposed. I am sure @Dr.K.: would agree to the invitation. If you have some time available, your help will be really valuable. Thanks. Cinadon36 (talk) 08:53, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Protection of help desk & of Teahouse

[edit]

In what you added to the help desk talk page in this edit, part of the wording refers to the Help Desk and part to the Teahouse. Presumably something equivalent but slightly differently worded is appropriate for each? --David Biddulph (talk) 19:34, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Probably not a bad idea. --Jayron32 17:25, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello J. Thanks for your work in dealing with the troll. Per this Wikipedia talk:Reference desk/Archive 131#Protection suggestion you might consider staggering the protection expiry times. It would prevent the troll from hitting multiple desks at the same time. Thanks for your time. MarnetteD|Talk 20:43, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom?

[edit]

I'm quite confident I already know the answer, but wouldn't forgive myself if I didn't at least ask the question. --Floquenbeam (talk) 17:14, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid I don't know what you're asking? Is there a case I'm involved in I didn't know about? --Jayron32 17:16, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm asking you to run, and anticipating you saying "hell no". --Floquenbeam (talk) 17:38, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Would a "maybe" suffice? I'm not uninterested, but I'd like to know what kind of commitment it requires, in terms of time and in terms of the mechanics of participating in the ArbCom. --Jayron32 17:40, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
A "maybe" would be fantastic. My understanding is the workload is more reasonable than it was when I was on, but asking Newyorkbrad or Opabinia regalis (I won't ping in case you don't want to ask them for some reason) or some other current Arb about the work load would probably give you a reasonable estimate. There are not a ton of calm, reasonable, drama-avoiding admins around. You're one. --Floquenbeam (talk) 17:43, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Much as this is "maybe" interesting to you, please just say no. We have very few capable admins left who get actual work done around here, losing you to that bunch would be a huge loss to Wikipedia. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:49, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is actually possible to do both, isn't it?  — Amakuru (talk) 21:55, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, it's not. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:59, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Closure of RD talk page discussion

[edit]

Hi Jayron. Please could you explain this a bit further? I don't really understand your hat note. If your admin opinion is that the discussion had run its course and should be boxed up, then I would agree. But I was hoping for a bit more admin input than that, on whether BB's deletion was justified. Thanks, --Viennese Waltz 06:31, 18 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The admin input is "That discussion served no purpose, and had no hope of doing anything useful for Wikipedia". Which is why it was closed. It served only to allow for two people to snipe at each other to no useful end. Closing it was the only useful result. --Jayron32 03:13, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I fully agree. In your personal opinion, was BB's deletion justified? --Viennese Waltz 06:36, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Don't care one way or the other. --Jayron32 12:01, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Closure

[edit]

Since you closed this discussion as a clear SNOW no, could you also take a look at this one, which is where the second RfC branched off and is also a pretty clear "we really don't need this"? Thanks, Nathan2055talk - contribs 08:09, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

[edit]

Hello, Jayron32. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Just WTF is your problem with me? Andy Dingley (talk) 16:45, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing. What prompted this question? --Jayron32 16:46, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Seriously? Your innocent "who, me?" act wore out last time. Andy Dingley (talk) 16:47, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Andy Dingley: I'm going to guess this is about some of the cleanup several of us have been working on regarding a recent troll attack on the ref desks. I apologize if you thought that work or explanations of it were directed at you. They weren't. If you want some more information on the problems we've been having lately, there's some discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Reference_desk#Science_questions_on_the_Computing_reference_desk and Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Strange_multiple_questions_on_Reference_desks. Based on the fact that immediately before posting on my talk page, you reverted me, that's my best impression here. There was nothing personally directed at you; I didn't even check to see who had been pulled in by the troll and answered the question. If you'd rather retain your answer, that's fine too. I'm not really particularly concerned with good faith answers here, those are fine. I apologize for making it seem like you had done something wrong. That was my fault for not being clearer in my explanation in the edit summary, and for misleading you by my lack of clarity that is entirely my fault, and for that I apologize. If I ever do something that you find confusing, or need an explanation for, please just drop me a note, and I'll try to explain in better detail. If I have done something wrong by mistake, I will always correct myself. I hope this explanation suffices, and my apology for causing a misunderstanding is sincere. I just want to reiterate: you did nothing wrong, and the problem is all mine. I apologize. --Jayron32 16:58, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

cachet vs caché

[edit]

Hey, just a friendly tip: think you meant, cachet ("prestige") here. Compare caché (hidden). Plain ol, cache, no accent, of course, is just a storage place for stuff, but it does come from the "hidden place" sense of the French word. Cheers, Mathglot (talk) 07:07, 1 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, the Mediation Committee is now closed and will no longer be accepting case requests.
  • A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
  • A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".
  • A proposal has been made to temporarily restrict editing of the Main Page to interface administrators in order to mitigate the impact of compromised accounts.

Technical news

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
  • Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

Removal of residence from Naomi Osaka

[edit]

It seemed a bit extreme to remove Osaka's place of residence per BLP. Yes, it should have been referenced, but it was not in the least "contentious" so that you had to remove it, and it was so easily sourced you should have done it yourself rather than a removal. Goodness. Fyunck(click) (talk) 01:33, 6 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Since you have already found the reference, if you don't know how to add it yourself, just post it here. I'll add it for you.--Jayron32 04:41, 6 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

We may have a problem

[edit]

Hey Jayron32,

I wanted to tell inform you that a guy is going around and saying cuss words in different articles and I even fixed some myself. This person is from Illinois I found but I never know if that is a proxy location(fake location). I am a hacker myself and I only use it to help people with other hackers hacking into peoples things and I have just made this account to help the admin with finding people who are ruining the point of my favorite site "Wikipedia" which I have been reading for the past 3 years. I want to tell you that I will do anything you request to help the site. I even donate monthly over $150 dollars to keep this site running. If you have any questions email me at <email redacted> and I can talk to you from there. Thank you for your time and I hope we can cooperate.

Sincerely, Slenderman4962 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Slenderman4962 (talkcontribs) 15:39, 6 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It's fine. We've got the vandalism thing under control. Thanks anyways for your offer of help. If you want to help out, Wikipedia:Counter-Vandalism Unit may be the place for you. I've also removed your email account; it's generally not a good idea to publish your email in a public location. --Jayron32 15:46, 6 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This cup of lovely lapsang soochong is in lieu of "The Sandwich of Exceptional Excellence" I tried for 10 minutes to award you. Unfortunately, that would have placed a rather large picture of a ham and cheese sandwich on your page. I must get busy and fix that little award I created 15 years ago!
This award is for the excellent opinion you expressed at Jimmy's talk page earlier today. I describe it as an "excellent opinion" as it exactly matches my own. Cheers! Hamster Sandwich (talk) 00:14, 14 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Christmas!
Hello Jayron32,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 09:01, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Responding to your comment on ANI

[edit]

Thanks for your comment on the ANI notice for reporting User talk:Ronz. I am not contending the decision on the issue, but I would certainly like to respond to your comments. Yes, your assessment is accurate that the issue was started only because I (and many others) have been frustrated in spending time on editing the page, only to find their contributions reverted. If you would look at my contribution history, you will find that I made no promotional edits but still found my revisions reverted (PS: I was editing without an account previously). I would also like to your point about one user writing most of the content on the page is actually supporting my argument since others have had their edits reverted and not allowed to contribute. You can see many other editors leave notes about such incidents on the articles talk page here. User talk:Ronz has also made rather unsavory claims about taking money for editing the page. This would be the first time that I have spent so much time editing Wikipedia. Not sure if my edits will stay this time, but atleast this has made me look more into editing Wikipedia. Thanks anyways for looking into the issue. NewlyHookedToWiki (talk) 16:13, 18 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Also copying to @Oshwah:. Thanks!
