Your invitation to participate in a Wikimedia-approved survey in online behavior.

Hello, my name is Michael Tsikerdekis[1][2], currently involved as a student in full time academic research at Masaryk University. I am writing to you to kindly invite you to participate in an online survey about interface and online collaboration on Wikipedia. The survey has been reviewed and approved by the Wikimedia Foundation Research Committee.

I am contacting you because you were randomly selected from a list of active editors. The survey should take about 7 to 10 minutes to complete, and it is very straightforward.

Wikipedia is an open project by nature. Let’s create new knowledge for everyone! :-)

To take part in the survey please follow the link: tsikerdekis.wuwcorp.com/pr/survey/?user=60059505 (HTTPS).

Best Regards, Michael Tsikerdekis (talk) 10:38, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

PS: The results from the research will become available online for everyone and will be published in an open access journal.

UPDATE: This is the second and final notification for participating in this study. Your help is essential for having concrete results and knowledge that we all can share. I would like to thank you for your time and as always for any questions, comments or ideas do not hesitate to contact me. PS: As a thank you for your efforts and participation in Wikipedia Research you will receive a Research Participation Barnstar after the end of the study. --Michael Tsikerdekis (talk) 19:57, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

I have participated in the survey and enjoyed doing so. Thank you for bringing it to my attention! Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 07:47, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited USS Vincennes (CG-49), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Arabian Gulf (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

North Korea

Keep in mind that while Hanja may not be used widely in North Korea, this article isn't written for North Koreans who largely don't have internet access anyway. It's written for English speaking people who may benefit from knowing how to write the country's name in Hanja regardless of its geographic boundaries. Rklawton (talk) 02:22, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Yes, but one most also keep in mind the subject at hand. Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 16:53, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Hello, regarding your edit summary here, the relevant guidance is at WP:DABRL. There should generally be only one blue link per entry. It is OK to include a redlink with a blue link so long at the redlink meets the criteria there. olderwiser 13:14, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip! Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 16:54, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

There are indeed a lot of problems with the article but concentrating on the CDP is extremely misleading. Most of the CDP is actually not part of the planned community. I can work with you on dealing with the inaccuracies but I'm afraid I needed to back up to the beginning. Mangoe (talk) 14:43, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on USAA (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates two or fewer extant Wikipedia pages and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic); or
  • disambiguates no (zero) extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. S. Rich (talk) 04:15, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:The Flag Of The People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran.png)

Thanks for uploading File:The Flag Of The People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:27, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

Proposed deletion

Interesting series of edits I've had on the way to you; reaching you specifically via the redirect page YouTube Poops. There's this remnant from 2004 still casting -- well, it was the one that felt maybe really dirty. Here was a step in my exploration, the wide net. Here was the starting point, masterfully found with "WikiBlame"+-; heard of it?; and a curious step on the way. Anyway, with that intro and your "clean slate" Talk page (some ref to archive but no signposts to such for sure) and signs-of-pride-and-accomplishment User page (and your name vaguely familiar though I can't recall the path crossing if there was one), I'll now take my chances and refer you to Talk:Youtube Poops (looks like the talk page didn't get the capital "T" treatment somehow); hat's in hand. Cheers.

ps My micro-crusade is wrapped up, now, for now. More to be done on it I know (beyond "my" four). Fitting somehow it feels to finish them up by chance here, "my most distinguished ... contact" perhaps I'd call you, in the series. Any advice, feedback or comment certainly welcome. Air du blog notwithstanding riskily close. Swliv (talk) 02:08, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Wrong Emerson! General Emerson is alive. You made this edit and several others. Please never add death or birth info into an article, especially a BLP, unless you have rock solid evidence from reliable sources to show it's the correct person. Your errors have been corrected and the matter is being discussed at the BLP/Noticeboard and on the article's talk page. Thank you. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 21:30, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

I did not add the death, it was already there. I just simply edited the information that was already on the article. I'd advise you not to go around making these false accusations. Thank you! :-) Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 22:05, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Henry E. Emerson

You replied to my comments but immediately removed/archived them. So I will respond to your comments directed to me. You said, "I did not add the death, it was already there. I just simply edited the information that was already on the article. I'd advise you not to go around making these false accusations".[3] I'm sorry, but there was absolutely nothing false in what I stated. While there was one editor shortly before you who made a single edit which added birth and death dates in the infobox,[4] you are the one who added the "Later life and death" section (with zero sources) with the text, "Emerson died on January 7, 2011, at the age of 82, in Camden, Arkansas."[5] I didn't say you were the only editor to add erroneous info; I simply advised you that you must have solid proof before you add content, especially something as contentious a death or birth date in a BLP. Had you looked at the source provided by the prior editor, you should have immediately realized that it was completely unreliable because it provided no information whatsoever to prove that it was about General Emerson. So your edits - unintentionally, I'm sure - perpetuated a huge error in the article: mistaken identity resulting in content about the death of a highly-decorated three-star general who is very much alive. You claimed I made "false accusations", but there was nothing in my comments that were false. ("Wrong Emerson! General Emerson is alive. You made this edit and several others. Please never add death or birth info into an article, especially a BLP, unless you have rock solid evidence from reliable sources to show it's the correct person. Your errors have been corrected and the matter is being discussed at the BLP/Noticeboard and on the article's talk page.") Which part(s) of that are false? I know you meant well and were trying to improve the article. On behalf of a number of other editors who have been working to resolve this matter, I am simply asking you to be careful in the future. If you see content from another editor that isn't reliably sourced - especially content as contentious as someone's death - please do not add on to it. Instead, do the opposite: remove it. Thanks. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 23:10, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi there!

Hi Illegitimate Barrister! I saw your edits to James Mattis and clicked your user page to check it out because you seemed familiar to me for some reason... Anywho, this is going to sound weird but would you mind if I centered your Wikipedia Awards and decorations? Instead of there being a blank spot on the left side of the awards and the wikibox below them? If not that's okay too. Cheers, — -dainomite   07:29, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Sure, go right on ahead! Thanks for the help! I always wondered how to get those ribbons centered; they are a pain sometimes. Thanks again! Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 07:31, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Done There you go, all set! No problem at all, if you ever need help with that stuff again just give me a shout. Also, do you typically edit other U.S. military related articles? Just curious. Cheers, — -dainomite   07:41, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the help! As for your question, I tend to edit a wide variety of articles, such as music, movies, books, sports, etc. However, I do edit political/military-related articles from time-to-time, yes. Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 07:42, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Oh gotcha, yeah, I was trying to think of what article(s) I saw your name on before, oh well hehe take care, — -dainomite   07:58, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi. This is an article that is on my watchlist, mainly for the songwriter whose bio I have worked on. I generally agree with and thank you for your changes. I also have followed them by adding 3 footnote sources. However there was one thing - the ref to a 2018 Free Govt of Vietnam anthem which I reverted because it seemed uncontroversial and unsourced, but I am informing you since if it can be sourced then by all means restore it, perhaps lower down the article. You may also be interested in looking at other anthem, song and also poem and declaration of independence articles such as Bình Ngô đại cáo and Nam Quoc Son Ha. Best wishes. In ictu oculi (talk) 04:14, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Okay, thank you for the heads-up! I just tried to improve the article, that's all. Cheers! Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 07:41, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Please don't cite urbandictionary.com as a source

Hi. Thanks for your efforts to improve Wikipedia. I notice that you added content to List of city nicknames in Maryland and other articles that was based on urbandictionary.com as a source. Please note that this source is not deemed to be a reliable source (see WP:RS) for Wikipedia. Citations to that source do not support verifiability of content. Accordingly, I am removing both content and citations. Please do not cite urbandictionary as a source. --Orlady (talk) 15:28, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

In a recent edit to the page T-72, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. If you have any questions about this, you can ask me on my talk page or visit the help desk. Thank you. Thomas.W (talk) 16:33, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

"is_UK=yes"

(Personal attack removed) In spite of that I have reverted your changes from UK spelling to US spelling, which are clearly against the Manual of Style, and have also changed the infoboxes back to UK English. (Personal attack removed) Thomas.W (talk) 17:28, 21 March 2013 (UTC)

Whoa, whoa, whoa, why the hostility? I simply replied to your message, and stated that you could revert my edit if you so desired. If I knew ahead of time that it was going to be such a bother for you, I would've went ahead and done it myself, no questions asked. As for my "screw up", as you say, I'll admit, that was an honest mistake on my part. That was my bad; I am not infallible. I honestly thought that the "is_UK=" template parameter on the articles in question referred to the origin of the vehicle/weapon. I was merely trying to help improve the article, and not trying to be disruptive or unconstructive, much less push one variety of English over the other, as you have so implied earlier. Also, there is no need for the threats of warnings. If I have made a mistake, simply point it out to me, preferably via my talk page, and I will try my best in the future to avoid them. Cheers, and best regards. Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 18:05, 21 March 2013 (UTC)
I did "just point it out" to you on your talk page, in a very polite way, only to have a "feel free to clean up my mess" thrown at me. (Personal attack removed). Thomas.W (talk) 18:15, 21 March 2013 (UTC)
I have never thrown at you a "clean up my mess"; I believe that you may have misinterpreted my statement. Such can be the problem with internet discussions these days; context can be hard to interpret with written text. Again, there is no need for the hostility or condescending insults. If you felt that my reply was rude or impolite in any way, or if I have caused you any offense, I apologize for that. Again, cheers, and best regards. Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 18:24, 21 March 2013 (UTC)
Whoa, don't get carried away, there has been neither hostility nor condescending insults here. (Personal attack removed). Thomas.W (talk) 19:01, 21 March 2013 (UTC)
I really don't see with what relevance my edit count has to do with anything here (maybe it's just my terrible, rubbish sense of humor). However, I do tend to have a quite nasty habit of re-editing my work a lot; I guess I'm just absent-minded, or just terribly sleep-deprived. Maybe even a combination of the two. Anyway, I'm afraid I'm going to leave this discussion here, at this. I really regret how terribly this all ended up, over such a simple, trivial, disagreement. I do not come here to Wikipedia looking to enter a conflict, nor do I wish for one. Otherwise, I would've left this place a long, long time ago. I do look forward to working with you productively and amiably in the future, and who knows? Maybe we'll meet again later on, hopefully under much better of circumstances should that day ever come. But, I'm just rambling now. Again, in any case, I wish you the best of luck in the future. Until that day in which we meet again, best regards, and cheers! Orphaned non-free media (File:Six Days in Fallujah logo.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Six Days in Fallujah logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful.

No Discussion?

I would think that moves and name changes of articles like this (Treasury Seal to Symbols) would warrant some kind of discussion or expressed intent in advance.--Godot13 (talk) 17:44, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

I didn't really think it was that controversial, so I just moved it. It would've have to have been moved eventually, due to article changes. Addition of country after city-state/province

Hello Illegitimate Barrister - I noticed that we had a little back and forth on Andrew Wiggins over the addition of "Canada" to "Toronto, Ontario" in the infobox of his article. I since have noticed that you have been adding "U.S." to several basketball figures' infoboxes (e.g. - Kim English). I apologize for not noting a reason for my Wiggins revert. I do want to point out that USPLACE does not require the addition of "US," ""United States," or "USA" to city/state and that convention on basketball infoboxes is not to add it. With Canadian articles, Manual of Style/Canada-related articles has similar language surrounding city/province. On the US front, this convention has been pretty well established. Thanks and I apologize for any misunderstanding. Rikster2 (talk) 13:39, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

Okay, thanks for the info. No worries, take care! Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 17:42, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

Recent edits to Brian Lamb

Hi Illegitimate Barrister, I see you recently made some changes to the Brian Lamb article, which I've worked on in the past (and so have watchlisted). All looks good except for one thing, and I'd like to know if you'll reconsider one change. First though, let me say that in addition to being a fan of C-SPAN, I'm also a consultant to the network. Because of this COI I won't be making direct changes to the article, though I often discuss updates and suggested revisions on Talk pages, as I'd like to do here.

Specifically, I noticed that you took the top-level C-SPAN section and made it a subsection of a larger Career section (itself renamed from Early career). While I see how this makes sense from an organizational standpoint, I strongly believe that given the length of Brian Lamb's career at C-SPAN and his role in the establishment of the network, the information on C-SPAN makes the best sense as its own section, as it was before. Would you be open to returning the C-SPAN section to a level 2 heading and changing Career back to Early career? Let me know what you think. Cheers, WWB Too (Talk · COI) 13:18, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Greetings! Thanks for bringing this to my attention. To be honest, I really don't have strong feelings one way or the other, so I have reverted it. Check the latest version, and see if it's okay. Cheers! Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 13:24, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Almost there

Hi, me again. I'm glad you're amenable to my suggestion; only thing is that with just one subhead in Career, that being C-SPAN, then it's the latter which really should be the top-level heading. As it stands now, Career and C-SPAN are redundant. Would you be willing to make that change as well? Thanks in advance, WWB Too (Talk · COI) 14:29, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

It's done. Hope you like! :-) Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 14:36, 23 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Flags of the U.S. counties requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Matty.007 09:10, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

The article Flags of the U.S. counties has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

WP:NOTGALLERY. perhaps a general discussion on the flags (design, history, restrictions, exceptions, ...), with some accompanying images to illsutrate one or another aspect, may be a viable article subject. But a gallery of all (or the most interesting or whatever the criterion used) such flags doesn't belong here but on Commons.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Greetings! Yes, I marked it as PD-TEXTLOGO rather than PD-TEXT because of the grass. Grass being generic shape, and the font being, well, text. I don't believe that a generic image of some simplistic-looking grass would qualify for copyright protection so I marked it as PD. Hi Illegitimate Barrister, could you please intervene on the South Vietnam article and page-protect the article? The user HCPUNXKID changed the status of SVN in the article's infobox from "Sovereign republic" to "Client state of the United States". HCPUNXKID's edit is considered controversial and is disputed even in academic circles, and it is clearly POV. In the past, there were edit disputes over the U.S. client state status and it was consistently rejected. Nguyen1310 (talk) 03:52, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

I'm afraid I can't do that, since I am not an administrator. Also, if the user doing these edits is a registered one, protecting the page will only protect it from I.P. users, if my memory serves me correctly. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 04:49, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Amc theatres logo.svg

See file:Amc theatres logo.svg for the mess that came about when you converted the AMC logo from fairuse to PD.

Also, you converted the fairuse template to {{information}} incorrectly, they use different fields with different names and have different required parameters, which caused a deletion request to be filed based on the incorrectly filled out information template -- 76.65.129.3 (talk) 05:00, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

HCPUNXKID edit-warring and 3RR violation on South Vietnam...

Hi, HCPUNXKID is reinstating the "U.S. Client State" status for the third time now and has reverted 4 edits. How should proceed on resolving this? Nguyen1310 (talk) 18:39, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

I'd take this issue to an administrator, this appears to be a violation of the revert rule. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 23:28, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

HEB

Awesome copyedits on the H-E-B article; thank you for finding an archived copy of that 2006 PDF! Will you do me the favor of double-checking me? I can't seem to find the stated fact in that document, although the magazine format may be causing me to miss it, and I can't find any other references to back it up. Kuru (talk) 23:39, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

Hey, no problem. You're welcome. I'll check it out for you. I was also surprised when I couldn't find the statement in the article. Cheers! Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 00:55, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
EDIT: I found some articles stating the fact. Can be found here and here. Hope this will suffice. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 01:00, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
Hmmm. Not sure how the founder being religious makes the company religious (aka Chik-fil-a, et al), but that cite beats the heck out of the imaginary one. I'll place that second source in the article (the first one is just a recite of the other). Thanks! Kuru (talk) 02:32, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
You're welcome, take care! :-) Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 03:21, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

James McCaffrey

Note that I've partially reverted your edits to James McCaffrey as you added a birthyear and birthplace without including a reliable source for the material. If you are going to restore the information, could you please ensure you also include your source? Thank you, --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 21:33, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

The birth year was derived from the the associated IMDb page. Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 23:39, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

James McCaffrey

Wow, you archive quickly, I didn't even get a chance to respond! Third party sources and compendia-type websites such as IMDB and Yahoo! Movies do not meet the reliable sourcing criteria for personal info in BLPs. IMDB especially is known to contain incorrect and unreliable biographical data and this is why there is long-time consensus against its use as an inline citation in BLPs (see for example here, here, and here). As such I have again removed the content until a source meeting WP:BLPSOURCES can be found. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 00:33, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for "thanks"... and technical note

Hi and... thanks for your "thanks" :-) . Anyway, just a technical note:
I've moved your navbox template to the most specific title {{Montgomery County, Maryland (topics navbox)}}, just to avoid title confusion with the generic US county navbox {{Montgomery County, Maryland}} that must not be moved in the title, to avoid a technical problem. Anyway, I've provided to add your template in the pages you've linked and to fix the link in the other pages. Thanks again for the "thanks" and good work. Regards. --Dэя-Бøяg 14:26, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Thank you, you're welcome! No worries, cheers! Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 19:16, 9 November 2013 (UTC)

Transfer of U.S. Coast Guard to the Department of Homeland Security

Your recent edit of United States Coast Guard assumes that the change in control of the Coast Guard occurred at the formation of the Department of Homeland Security. The actual transfer of control of the Coast Guard from the Department of Transportation to the Department of Homeland Security happened on 1 March 2003. I know because I was called to active duty 2 days before the actual transfer to help with the security of the Strategic Port of Embarkation at the Port of Beaumont Texas before the invasion of Iraq. You might want to look at this link to the Coast Guard Historian's site as a reference. Cheers. Cuprum17 (talk) 21:41, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

Oops, terribly sorry about that. The Homeland Security Act and the USCG essay I cited gave a said date of 25 November 2002 as the move from DOT to DHS. Thank you for correcting me, nice to hear it from a coastie himself! If I ever make a mistake like that again, feel free to correct me in the future. BG Frost

Hello. It looks like I need some help with my first (and currently only) Wikipedia article. I created the article for BG Frost. Obviously, I am a newcomer to Wikipedia and need some help with the standards and conventions relating to articles . . . especially VANITY articles like this one. So far, I simply followed the style and content of other living U.S. Army Generals Wikipedia articles. I'll be glad to find and obtain references/verifications if possible. If not, I will remove any offending passages. I'm just not sure which parts need citations/verifications. Again, I can only go by what I see on many other U.S. Army General's Wikipedia entries. Also, some of your changes make sense. There a few I don't understand. Example: the "big star" (my way) versus the "epaulette" (your way) image in the Infobox. All of the other General's pages use the star. That's would be my preference here. Feel free to contact me and give me a hand getting this article right and compliant with Wikipedia standards. I am working on two other articles that I MAY consider submitting later this year. I'll want to be correct from the start. Thanks for your time. Afrosty (talk) 22:34, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

Article on Hal Moore Comment

What are your thoughts on collaborating on the article Hal Moore? I have been working on it off and on for the last couple of weeks and I am quite frankly stuck in a few places. Your edits seem to help jog some thoughts of how to proceed. I would like to get this article done because General Moore's son Greg has been prodding me along to get the article's contents right (there were several factual errors that needed corrected and referenced) and up to Wikipedia standards. My initial goal was B-class. My time is somewhat limited at this time of the year but I told him that I could probably get it done sometime during February. Care to help? Let me know. I'm currently trying to get the bare url citations in correct form, but personal commitments are pressing me for the next couple of days. Cuprum17 (talk) 02:16, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

I'll be glad to help! Just tell me what exactly you need help with and I'll see to fixing them for you. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 02:18, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
Well, first off, I'm trying to get a consistent look to the Notes section by getting all the website references used in some kind of order. I started and got some of them done and then got bogged down. As you can see, many of the citations I use are from books and they are pretty consistent, but the web citations from other editors are done about five different ways depending on who tacked the information onto the article. If it is to be a B-class article that needs to be corrected. Thanks for the offer, your edits are looking real good from my viewpoint. I will be away from keyboard for at least a couple of hours. Cuprum17 (talk) 02:29, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
Alrighty then! I'll see to getting to work on that. Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 03:04, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
Looking at your work this morning and the Notes section is much improved! Thank you. I will attempt to work on one section at a time with copyedits and citations on the material and it would be a help to me if you could look the work over from time to time and review my edits. I have the bad habit of falling into a rut with my wording of narratives becoming stilted in style. Please look over my shoulder the next couple of weeks and either make the improvements you see fit or make suggestions. You have been a great help so far! Cuprum17 (talk) 17:29, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

You're welcome! You do what you have to do with it and I'll make sure everything is okay afterwards. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 17:32, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Infobox flags

Why did you revert the IP's edits? What definition of vandalism do they fall under? (and yes, I blocked them, but not because they were vandalizing). -- John Reaves 18:57, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

They were disruptive (some even broke the 3:RR, I think), and they went against the style guide. He quotes WP:INFOBOXFLAG as his reasoning for his edits, however that rule makes a clear exception for government officials (Flag icons may be relevant in some subject areas, where the subject actually represents that country, government, or nationality – such as military units, government officials, or national sports teams), just like the articles he was editing. He seems to be on some sort of personal vendetta, determined to make sure his edits are not reverted, regardless of validity. He has insulted others who disagree with him (myself, other users, and even administrators!) in the past, tell them to "fuck off" and calling them "cunts" (excuse my French). Not only that, the Military History Wikiportal has a clear consensus for allowing flagicons in military-related articles. Remember, this isn't the first time he's done this. He's been here on several different I.P. addresses, dynamic I.P.s and proxies, ("50.159.28.153", "24.44.203.79", "67.43.136.166", "50.121.48.234") in the past, doing the exact same thing (blatantly remove content, insult and deride those who disagree). He made it clear in a very rude talkpage message here that his edits were done for personal reasons, not to better the article. In any case, I thank you for the block, hopefully he will not return and continue to be disruptive under another I.P. address, but I have my doubts. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 18:59, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I've dealt with this user before, and yes, they can be very nasty. -- John Reaves 19:12, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Hal Moore article

Could you look over my recent edits on Hal Moore and see if it looks OK to you? Palm Springs edit

FYI, when I first read your edit summary on Palm Springs, I thought it said bordello. What? I asked myself – I don't remember such an establishment when I lived there. I wonder what RS Barrister has for this edit. Maybe I'd better check Craigs List. – S. Rich (talk) 00:12, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

All the best,
James Hare

USCGC Aspen

Your edits of the article USCGC Aspen (WLB-208) are very much appreciated, especially the picture and patch as I always have trouble getting those right. I have concern about the last edit made [6] here. I generally use a short form of citation that does not link to the website used directly but I always include the link in the "Reference cited" section below the "Citations". If you will click on the third reference listed you will see that your link actually duplicates mine. I feel that it cleans up the list of citations and makes a cleaner looking section. Would you mind if I changed it to the way I had it? My plan is to go through the whole Juniper-class of articles and get them up to at least B-class. Many of the articles are just copies of the Coast Guard website. I could use your help in copyedit as my style is somewhat stilted at times and certainly with the pictures and unit patches. That would be very much appreciated. Your idea of "mergin'" the history section with "The Original Aspen" section was something I had not thought of and I like it. Thank you... Cuprum17 (talk) 16:54, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words! I usually only include the links in the (references cited) section seperately if the cited source is a physical book. If it's a weblink, I generally tend to have it all done in one cite. However, if you wish to revert it back to the way you had it, then certainly by all means, feel free to do so. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 17:59, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
No worries...so do I get some help? Pretty please? ... Cuprum17 (talk) 18:09, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
Sure thing, what do you need help on and on what article? Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 18:11, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
Well, the class of ship articles I am currently working on is the Juniper-class of Coast Guard seagoing buoy tenders. Here's the ship class template:
There are sixteen ships in the class and I would like to get them all squared away and looking pretty much the same. I thought that I would get the Aspen article completed to both of our likings and use it as a guide to apply to the rest of the class. I picked Aspen because no article existed on it and I wouldn't be stepping on anyone's toes until I had something that I could use to improve the other articles in the class. You could help best by using the Aspen infobox as a pattern and complete or improve the infoboxes on the other articles in the class. Theis would include pictures and unit patches where available. After I finish the copy on Aspen I would like for you to check my copy for grammar and other little landmines that I tend to leave at times. When we finish with Aspen, my plan would be to move on to Kukui or Walnut as those have no current articles. Moving along, I would then next tackle those articles with just a single paragraph and complete them. Lastly, I would probably rewrite much of the Juniper and Fir articles to make them read better. Some of the articles are riddled with military jargon and while that isn't all bad, it needs some explanation for the general class of reader. I would like all the articles to have much the same citation style if possible. Since this is a relatively new class of ship, there is not likely to be much history available on any of them, but I would like to get as much of it included as possible as long as it can be reliably cited. For now, I guess, I would have you work on the infoboxes, if you don't mind... Cuprum17 (talk) 19:19, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

Sure thing, I'll do what I can. India-Bravo, out. Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 19:26, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

Good morning! Noticed your edit putting the portal back under the "See also" header. Another editor put it elsewhere because at the time there was nothing else in the section...I don't know which is right. I am busy this morning finishing up on USCGC Walnut (WLB-205) and the history section and could use help retrieving a picture or two and a unit crest. The unit homepage is here: Walnut homepage Thank you again for your help and if you see any copyedits to make feel free to do what you do best, compadre... Cuprum17 (talk) 15:14, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
Most articles I've seen put the portal link in the "See also" section. If there are no bluelinks there, then a "portal bar" is used. I've added a few pics and a CoA to WLB-205's page in the meantime. India-Bravo, out. Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 15:37, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Hal Moore

Great work on the awards section on Hal Moore, much more pleasing to the eye and it makes the whole article appear professionally done. I think we work as a team pretty well. Thanks again... Cuprum17 (talk) 16:58, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

No problem! I try to have the awards section resemble the ribbon rack on a uniform for military biographical articles; looks cooler that way. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 17:59, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

USCGC Kukui Comment

Here's another Juniper-class that had no article...USCGC Kukui (WLB-203). I have some of it roughed out and it really needs your touch to make it look nice. What do you think? "Team IB/C17" ??? or is it India Bravo/Charlie One Seven ??? I'd appreciate your help on pix and other goodies. Thanx Cuprum17 (talk) 20:28, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Charlie-1-7, this is India-Bravo Charlie-Oscar. I've done some minor work so far on the article. I have managed to find a picture of the ship's crest, however, for the life of me, I cannot find a photograph of the ship itself. There are none on the USCG website (which would be public domain) or any photographs elsewhere on the internet that are licensed under the Creative Commons criteria. All the photographs I've found are copyrighted, thus, unable for use on Wikipedia. India-Bravo, out. Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 22:33, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
I came up with scratch also...must truly be a stealth cutter! No biggie...we did the best we could. I will finish my edits on history tomorrow and move on to USCGC Walnut (WLB-205). Cuprum17 (talk) 01:15, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

USCGC Willow (WLB-202) Comment

Next "victim" is USCGC Willow (WLB-202). It already has a picture but it could use a unit patch here and copyedit on what I have already edited. I have run out of time today so I will have to work on a history section later. Thanx for the help... I am AFK for now. Cuprum17 (talk) 19:29, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

Sure thing! Good to have at least one external hyperlink on every article. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 19:16, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

USCGC Walnut (WLB-205) Comment

I read a comment that the bird is bigger than the ship on this article...perhaps we need a picture of the ship that is larger so that more detail is seen? Is that a problem? The article passed B-class review, but that was mentioned. Cuprum17 (talk) 23:20, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

No worries. I've uploaded a picture of the ship with the excess cropped out. India-Bravo, out! Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 03:14, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

Time to pow-wow

Couple of things...

  • I notice on the lead section of the Willow article the link that says "For other ships of the same name, see USCGC Willow." This links to a "set index" page that list all the possibilities for USCGC Willow. I think that we could do that on all the articles that we have created and edited. Good idea or not? Your thoughts?
  • It has always been my intention to enter the articles on this class of ships in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Contest. Recognizing that you have made significant improvements in my edits, I want your thoughts on my using the articles that we have worked on together for the contest entries. If you wish we can put some of the entries in the pot with your name. If you don't care, I will enter them under my nom de plume. What say you? If you don't want them entered at all, I'm good with that also. I don't have a snowballs chance in hell of winning anyway, but I usually enter my monthly output just to stay in the game. Personally, I think we do a pretty fair job of knocking articles out, and I can't believe how fast you can edit some articles. I just don't want to burn you out on Coast Guard stuff. If you need a break, take one... Cuprum17 (talk) 20:08, 5 April 2014 (UTC)
Good idea with the "other ships", that sounds nice. For the contest, do what you think is best. Thanks for the concern, but don't worry about me burning out. I'm fine! Best regards, 20:14, 5 April 2014 (UTC)

List of maritime disasters

In the list of maritime disasters article, I noticed you changed some of the {{flag}} templates from USA to United States. The reason I changed them to USA was so that they would group together when the table was sorted - for example, if you wanted to find the worst maritime disaster in the US. I don't care if it's "US", "USA", or "United States", and all 3 arguments work with the template - but I would like to keep them all the same within the entire article. Is there a reason you prefer "United States"? Hoof Hearted (talk) 20:44, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

That's the term Wikipedia prefers, as outlined in WP:NOTUSA ("Do not use U.S.A. or USA, except in a quotation or as part of a proper name"). It also says that if a country is mentioned with the names of other countries, then full names should be used rather than an abbreviation ("France and the United States, not France and the U.S."). Wikipedia prefers to have the full name of countries written out rather than abbreviated, as it views that as being too informal for an encyclopedia. Sorry for not mentioning that in the edit summary earlier, that was my bad. Best of wishes, Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 04:42, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

USS Bear

Your edits of Ellsworth P. Bertholf are much appreciated. However during the time that the Bear was operated by the Revenue Cutter Service, she was known as USRC Bear rather than USS Bear. Bear was probably one of the most famous cutters in RCS/USCG history yet the article is named USS Bear. She spent 41 years as a RCS/USCG cutter and only 5 years as a commissioned Navy ship, but when I tried to change the name of the article early in my Wikipedia career I caught sooooooo much flak that I left it alone. Would urge you to change your edit in the Bertholf article to USRC Bear. Thanks for your interest, IB...and your copy edits are usually right on the mark. Cuprum17 (talk) 02:49, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

Oops, sorry about that. It said "USS" in the article, so that's what I used. I changed it to USRC per your recommendation. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister 03:38, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

With the best of regards, your most humble and obedient servant, Illegitimate Barrister 05:23, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi Illegitimate Barrister- Again you have replaced a perfectly viable original illustration with a PNG file that has a very harsh crop and actually cuts out part of the original art work. This defeats the purpose of having a period historical illustration of the coat of arms. I don't see that this is necessary (or preferable). Thanks.-Godot13 (talk) 00:28, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

I made the background transparent as there is no useful information there. It's just taking up space and size. I cropped the image while keeping the subject matter intact. The large background just takes adds space that needn't be. Better to have just the subject matter in question in the file. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister 06:15, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Addition of border on infobox image

What purpose is there to adding a border to an image in an infobox? As best as I can tell, it makes no difference whatsoever.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 20:49, 3 August 2014 (UTC)

I just add the borders to all images without a transparent background (photographs, and maps, and such) to make it look better. It's just aesthetics, that's all. I really don't see what the big deal is. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister 06:14, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

What do you think - notable? -- Y not? 20:06, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

I'd think so. He's notable because of his death, his career (especially his number of deployments), and because he helped save Jessica Lynch, who is very famous. The fulfills Wikipedia's minimum two event requirement for notability. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister 23:04, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

"Wikipedia and the DoD use different style guides" then Wikipedia needs to do what is correct instead of doing it the wrong way it is supposed to read Major General not Major general lower case is wrong whoever on Wikipedia came up with this doesn't know anything about the military it is a insult to those that have attained there rank for it not to be correct. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.163.159.135 (talk) 03:52, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

It's not just Wikipedia's style guide, it's called the English language. Lowercase letters are only incorrect as far as the DoD's style guide is concerned, which DOES NOT apply to Wikipedia's articles. As far as the English language is concerned, the rank is only capitalized when it comes right before somebody's name. "He was a lieutenant colonel" vis-a-vis "Lieutenant Colonel Joe Sixpack, USMC". Also, the ranks ARE lowercase in U.S. federal law. See here. If you want to take this matter up, go to the Military history and the Wikipedia Manual of Style talk pages and start a discussion there. They can explain why it is the way it is way better than I can. However, for the time being, there are rules here on Wikipedia that must be followed and may not be whimsically flaunted at will just because one editor doesn't like it. These rules have been put into place by the consensus of the Wikipedian community, many of whom are military experts. Also, when reverting an edit, please give a reason why it was reverted. A lot of people don't like getting their work reverted without being told why, and it is considered vandalism under Wikipedia's guidelines. I understand you're only trying to help, but these are the rules and that's the way it is. P.S.: Also, please sign your talk page posts with four tildes, that way, people know who they are talking to. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister 06:06, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

My militaria

IB, thank you for your edits to my "ribbon rack" on my user page. There are a couple of revisions, however. The Army Presidential Unit Citation was actually the Air Force Presidential Unit Citation, even though I served in the Army. Our military intelligence unit worked very closely with the 460th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing [8] to get aerial imagery taken by them processed, interpreted, and distributed to Army and Marine Corps units in the field; and when they were awarded the AFPUC, so were we. On our MIBARS Association page [9] towards the bottom of the page where the old unit personnel photos are I am #7 in the first photo. I am not in the second unit photo, because I was taking the photograph (standing in the back of a deuce and a half). In the last picture on the page is a photo-mosaic shot of our operations area right next door to Bien Hoa Air Base. I took the series of shots that were put into the mosaic. I worked in the low flat building in the center of the photograph as a senior photographic laboratory specialist for two years. Yes, I extended my normal one year tour by an additional year...

The other change is the pistol qualification ribbon. Try as I might, I could not qualify with the M9 Beretta pistol that the Coast Guard used while I was active. In the Army, I qualified many times with the M1911 Colt, but that doesn't carry over to my Coast Guard record. I did manage to qualify through the Coast Guard with the M16 rifle, and that is the ribbon that should be displayed. For your information, while I was in the Army I also qualified on the M1 rifle, M14 rifle, M16 rifle, M1 carbine, M2 "grease gun" and the M60 machine gun, but again those things don't carry over to the Coast Guard awards records.

Additionally, there should be an "O" device on both the Coast Guard Unit Commendation and the Meritorious Team Commendation ribbons. if you want to put these on there that would be great.

I have researched my records, and in my Coast Guard Reserve Good Conduct Medal I have six (Six!) awards of the medal, so I think I need a silver star for that one. (The medal itself and five additional awards.) (I was a good conduct sailor!)

Thanks again and if you want to, make the changes... as always your copy edits are usually right on the mark... Cuprum17 (talk) 17:35, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

You're welcome, the pleasure was all mine. I've added the ODD devices, fixed the marksmanship ribbon, and added the star to the GCM. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister 20:21, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
Looks pretty much like it did the day I left the Coast Guard! Thanks... Cuprum17 (talk) 20:37, 10 August 2014 (UTC)
Glad to be of service, MKC Jones. Think nothing of it. You wouldn't happen to have any warfare badges or qualification badges, do you? Any marksmanship badges from the army? I'd just like to know if I'm missing anything else. Regards, Illegitimate Barrister 06:01, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Where: The Cove, Dupont Circle, 1730 Connecticut Avenue NW, 2nd floor, 20009, DC

MoS

Hi, please ensure your edits to infoboxes are not violating our MoS and other template instructions. For example, with this edit, you introduced two errors. The "Years of service" should be expressed as years only (hence "years" of service, not "dates" of service). See the instructions at {{Infobox military person}} and featured military bios such as George S. Patton for example. Second, date ranges should always be expressed with unspaced en dashes per WP:ENDASH. You should revert yourself anywhere else you have made these changes. --Laser brain (talk) 14:02, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. Museum hacks and museum edits

Hello there!

Upcoming events:

  • February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
  • February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
  • February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".

I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.

If you have any questions or have any requests, please email me at james.hare@wikimediadc.org.

See you there! – James Hare

Los Angeles infobox

I don't understand the logic behind your preferred ordering for the county, MSA, and CSA in the infobox. Please explain. Best regards,—Stepheng3 (talk) 21:55, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

I did that so that the incorporated locales would be first, then the geographic regions would be last. Illegitimate Barrister 00:14, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
Then why put the CSA before the MSA?—Stepheng3 (talk) 00:19, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
Don't ask me, it was like that already, before I arrived. Illegitimate Barrister 02:58, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
I thought it was more logical to list them in order of descending size, but I think I understand your choice. Perhaps a separation between the incorporated locales and the geographic regions would make the logic clearer.—Stepheng3 (talk) 19:43, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, that'd be a good idea. Thanks, Illegitimate Barrister 20:27, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

Thought you should know...

IB: Someone did a driveby hack on your talk page yesterday, and I thought you should know. I rolled the post back, I hope that was OK. I confess that I "watch" your page so that I know what kind of projects you are working on at the moment. I hope my action helped and not hindered; I wouldn't have attempted any rollback except the hack did not appear to be productive and I believe that a persons talk page should only be edited by that person. Now, I am very pleased to announce:

There is going to be a lot going on, and I hope you can come to some of the events!

If you have any questions or need any special accommodations, please let me know.

Chief

The rank of Chief, or Chief Petty Officer is capitalized. It's a proper noun. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chief Ptacnik (talkcontribs) 05:20, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

Not on Wikipedia, they aren't. Military ranks on Wikipedia (and in the English language at large) are only capitalized when they are placed immediately before the name of the rank-holder. So, it would be "John Doe was a seaman apprentice" and "Seaman Apprentice John Doe, USN". Look at the Wikipedia Manual of Style for further info, which clearly states this, plain as day. For your convenience, I have linked it here. In addition, it is not a proper noun, as many navies in other countries have the exact same title. For it to be a proper noun, it would have to be explicitly unique to the USN. Indeed, even the USCG has them. Also, it's not a rank, it's a rate. Commissioned officers have ranks, enlisted personnel have rates. At least in the U.S. sea services, they do. Also, sign your talk pages posts and add a header for new talk page messages. If you don't know how to sign a talk page post, it's four tildes at the end of a message (Like this: ~~~~). On North American English keyboards, the tilde key can be found near the top left-hand portion of the keyboard, just below the "Esc" key. Also, in the future, place new talk page messages at the bottom of a page. Since you haven't done these things, I have gone ahead and done them for you. Still up in the air

Thank you for your vote of confidence recently regarding my contributions on Civil War related material. On another matter, I am getting sustained pushback to sourced information I would like to add to the encyclopedia at United States intro sentence. References to “50 states and DC” which omit the territories are almanacs in Spring 2013 discussion and databases in Fall 2014 discussion. I ask for sources to justify the leap from "unincorporated territories" for internal tax regime in primary documents to territories as "not a part of the United States in any sense", --- but none are forthcoming. I am accused of wp:cherry picking and wp:original research, debate tricks and twisting references, disruption and sea-lioning by experienced, major contributing wikipedia editors.

Most recently Seqqis tried to add territories and was dismissed without rationale by Golbez as there is currently a mediation in process. That process may fail as the 2013 Dispute Resolution process did. A valued historian wikipedian, Rjensen, has counseled "leave it to the lawyers" or something like that. In the meantime, sincerely, -- on the merits, --What am I missing? TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 14:55, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Greetings, sir. Your correspondence of the 23rd was received by me with great favor on the morning of the 24th. If I am reading this correctly, the current dispute is over whether or not U.S. territories are "part of" the United States? If so, I have founded an official document from the U.S. State Department that says they are not. However, this document is in regards to U.S. territories in the 19th century, and not the present day, so I don't know if it applies here. I found another document that labels them as "posessions" of the United States. Personally, I think the entire fiasco is mere semantics, but I may be wrong here. I would word the sentence as "The U.S. consists of 50 states and D.C., and has several territories" or something to that effect, if that may please both sides. I remain, your most humble and obedient servant, Illegitimate Barrister 06:27, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Thank you, I am reassured, your proposal is remarkably close to the wording suggested by Mendaliv, and I find it acceptable now as I did 24 February 2013: The United States (US or U.S.), commonly called America, and officially the United States of America (USA or U.S.A.), is a federal constitutional republic that includes fifty states and a federal district, as well as other territories and possessions.
Though there is no action to be taken until after an unsuccessful conclusion of the ongoing mediation procedure — no activity for five days since my last posting agreeing to “live with” four of the six proposals on the table, one of which has been agreed to by six of the seven participants. I am not hopeful. TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 09:34, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

re: your sources, agreed in these ways.

In the Senate Committee of Finance hearings [10], the current “territories” and historical “possessions” terms are used interchangeably — appropriately since the term “unincorporated” in Supreme Court holding in 1901 applies to the discriminatory tax regime on sugar at the time; it is still good law, and accounted for in the Haider-Markel source p.649 [11] cited below, noting "They are officially a part of U.S. territory.”
In the 7 FAM 1121, the State Department describes the historical evolution of the territory status, beginning from possessions with citizenship withheld by the courts, to the two commonwealths of Puerto Rico and Northern Mariana Islands with citizenship of the soil, p. 3: "areas under U.S. sovereignty that are not states … [though] self-governing.” For the others, its case by case. Since 1952, p.16: “Guam is listed as part of the geographical definition of the "United States" in Section 101 (a)(38) INA.”, as is Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam [12]. TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 09:34, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

Preference, -- also probably besides the point in the collaborative mainspace -- : Since (a) the five major territories are included in the United States “in a geographical sense” (not constitutionally a state), and (b) their populations are U.S. citizens/nationals with permanent allegiance to the U.S., (c) they enjoy a degree of self-governance under protection of federal courts, and (d) they participate in the national councils with delegate Members of Congress equivalent to that of Washington DC,

THEREFORE they are part of the U.S. federal republic: The United States is a federal republic comprising 50 states, a federal district and five major territories. [Note: States send Representatives to Congress, DC and the territories send delegate Members of Congress; the 50 states and DC have Electoral College votes electing the U.S. President, the territories do not.] TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 09:56, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

Interesting. Since you put it that way, I might be inclined to agree that they are "part of" the United States, since they are quite involved in it. Illegitimate Barrister 10:10, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the reality check. Your consideration will make it easier for me to wait out the mediation outcome. TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 11:39, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Glad to be of help. Illegitimate Barrister 16:47, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

1. Sources -- selection from among two dozen...

  • Presidential Proclamation in 1999, “in accordance with international law, …proclaim[ed] the extension of the contiguous zone of the United States of America, including the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the United States Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands…”, p.163 [13]
  • The U.S. Homeland Security's Customs and Border Patrol declares in 2015, "U.S. Citizens … who travel directly between parts of the United States, which includes Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), without touching at a foreign port or place, are not required to present a valid U.S. Passport or U.S. Green Card” [14].
  • Scholar Ellis Katz notes that "The American federation is composed of fifty states, a federal district (Washington, D.C.), fourteen territories" (five major territories, and nine small islands) and numerous federally recognized Indian tribes. p.296 [15] in Akhtar Majeed, Ronald L. Watts, Douglas Brown eds., “Distribution of powers and responsibilities in federal countries” (2006) McGill-Queen’s University Press.
  • Scholar Jon M. Van Dyke at University of Hawaii, includes the five major territories as “a part of the United States”, [16] "The evolving legal relationships between the United States and its affiliated U.S.-flag islands" in the Hawaii Law Review Fall, 1992.
  • Scholar Donald P. Haider-Markel at University of Kansas notes the five major territory ambiguous status, "They are officially a part of U.S. territory,” … despite remaining 'unincorporated territories’. p.649 [17]. in “Political Encyclopedia of U.S. states and regions” (2008) Congressional Quarterly Press.

I can find no scholar who looks at the primary sourced "unincorporated territories" for an internal discriminatory tax regime and then concludes they are "not a part of the United States" for every sense in the modern era. In fact, the opposite seems to be true in the case of Puerto Rico. A federal district court has ruled unchallenged for seven years that Congress evolved a political incorporation by statute of Puerto Rico "in fact" p. 26 [18], and scholars Lawson and Sloan in the Boston Law Review note Puerto Rico is the paradigm of an "incorporated" territory as modern jurisprudence understands that term of art p. 1175 [19].

2. Article United States introductory sentence.

3. Content. The U.S. is a federal republic consisting of 50 states, a federal district, and five major territories. -- as sourced with scholarly reliable sources above. Two scholarly sources omitting territories also omit DC, which is not acceptable among the editor consensus. Since 1988 the constitutional privileges and immunities clause has applied to the territories p.28 [20], and like DC the five major territories have a delegate Member of Congress for participation in the national councils of the federal republic in the American tradition for territories p.297 [21].

4. Counter argument.

  • Executive sources refer to the territories as “unincorporated”. --- “Unincorporated” refers in 1901 to internal tax regime withholding citizenship. In 1922 it refers to fundamental constitutional protections. Discriminatory tax regime is still governing law, but additional constitutional protections are extended by Congress and Courts in the modern era; a federal district court unchallenged in seven years observes Congress has “incorporated” Puerto Rico by statute “in fact”; scholars Lawson and Sloane conclude it is “incorporated” as modern jurisprudence understands that term of art. The citizenship withheld from "savages" by the Supreme Court in the Insular Cases have been mutually made citizens by modern referendums in Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam. American Samoa are U.S. nationals with "permanent allegiance" to the United States.
  • Of the five major territories, the United Nations classifies Guam, American Samoa and U.S. Virgin Islands as “non-self-governing”. — The U.N. does not secede sub-units of federal republics. Alaska and Hawaii were on the list mid-20th century, but they remained a part of the U.S. -- French Polynesia and New Caledonia are French on the U.N. list, described in the Wikipedia article France as comprising the French Republic with membership in the National Assembly. All five major U.S. territories have the same delegate Members of Congress as DC, which is conceded as a part of the United States federal republic.
  • The Supreme Court declared territories “unincorporated”, the the Supreme Court Insular Cases must be over turned or the Congress must explicitly “incorporate” territories before they can be seen as “a part of” the United States. -- That is a wp:or editor interpretation of "unincorporated" from the primary sources. The U.S. government asserts and scholars conclude that the five major U.S. territories are “a part of the United States”, and are “included” in the United States.

What is the purpose of adding "|border" to profile images?

What is the purpose of adding the "|border" to the images on articles? It causes an error on mouseover and won't display the profile image. I have reverted this change now 3 times on the Barack Obama article, asking for an explanation on the Talk page. And you keep adding it without giving an explanation. If it is not necessary (I see no benefit on display using any device I use to browse Wikipedia), then it should not be added. Thanks. Dave Dial (talk) 02:25, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

Well, nothing in life is absolutely "necessary". But, I add it because it makes it look better. Illegitimate Barrister 02:37, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

Still adding "|border" to profile images?

You are still adding the "|border" to images in articles. As I've seen on your Talk page, it is purely aesthetic and not necessary. Since you have seen that it causes an error and prohibits the image from showing during a mouseover, it should be removed from all articles. Most especially articles of people with images, where editors want to see the image for information during a mouseover. If you continue to add this to articles, we will have to discuss this behaviour at the appropriate venue. Dave Dial (talk) 05:21, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

Threats will get you nowhere. Illegitimate Barrister 05:23, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

Listen, you have been told repeatedly that adding that causes a problem. Just on the Obama page where I have had to remove it 3 times, added each time by you. It's not a threat, I am informing you that if you do not stop, this will escalate. The type of behaviour you are displaying is unacceptable. When other editors inform you that your edits are causing errors, STOP making those unnecessary edits. Dave Dial (talk) 05:34, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
The only "escalation" going on here is a result of your actions and your actions alone. Need I remind you to read the Wikipedia guidlines regarding stalking and hounding? Illegitimate Barrister 05:37, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

Please stop causing errors all over Wikipedia with your unnecessary edits

Why are you still adding the "|border" unnecessarily to images, even though you know it causes an error? Why do we have to make this an official policy to NOT do, when you are obviously an editor trying to improve the project? I can bring this to ANI or some other board to force you to stop, but that shouldn't be necessary. So I am asking you one last time, please stop adding the border to images. They prevent the image being shown on mouseover and cause errors. Dave Dial (talk) 18:48, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

Still threatening and stalking people, I see? Well, I'll have you know that such behavior will get you nowhere. What I am doing goes against no guidelines in the Manual of Style, but rather, your personal feelings, so, I think it is best for you to take a chill pill. Now, although I would be completely justified in going to the ANI to deal with your threats and stalking, that's not my style. I don't like to threaten people to get what I want, unlike some other users. Illegitimate Barrister 23:59, 9 March 2015 (UTC)

To Illegitimate Barrister:

I have indeed read, at your suggestion, the article on vandalism, and it only confirms my previous statement. You are a vandal because your edit was in bad faith. It was clearly intended as a provocative act, which added nothing to the ordinary reader’s understanding of the article. People come to the article to learn about Samuel Johnson, not to be confused by the internal political technicalities of the British Empire, all of which can be found in other articles in great detail. You made this edit not to improve factual accuracy, but only to promote your own political and cultural viewpoint. It is therefore unacceptable, which is why it was undone.

London, the city Samuel Johnson loved, and in which he spent his entire working life, is now, and has always been, in England. SamJohn2013 (talk) 14:19, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Texas Constable

Please excuse my ignorance of how to get in touch. Please research the Texas Constable more. There are statements in the page that are untrue. The Texas Constitution requires the constable to attend JP Court, they are not legally able to employ a bailiff unless they are in Bexar County. Also please research the beginning of the Texas Constable as they are 3 months older than the Texas Rangers. This is what I have been taught and trained. If I am untrue in my statements, please address them with me. I only wish for the proper truth to be brought forward for the misunderstood Texas Lawmen of The State of Texas. Your recent edits to Republic of Texas

Howdy! I noticed you changed the status from "Former Independent Nation" to "Sovereign country" on the Republic of Texas article Diff. I just wanted to give you a heads up that there has been extensive argumentation about this subject recently and there is an active discussion about it on the talk page HERE. The status field on the Former Country Infobox is for the current status of former nations, as can be seen when looking at other such examples in the related [Former Countries in North America category. While I personally think that the Republic of Texas is still a good idea, unless I missed something in the news today "Former Independent Nation" is more accurate. - CompliantDrone (talk) 21:43, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

Washington & Lincoln Series Boxes

Hi. I like the concept of using an older Presidential seal on these series boxes. However, I'm going to revert these for the time being, as I am presently working on a high-resolution colorized version of the 1850 seal design, so that the series box looks proper. The current file is all white with pencil, so it looks drab and low-resolution at a size of 40px. Once I finish the colorized version, based off the present seal, I'll reintroduce. While I agree it is preferable to have the seal of proximate vintage, I think it is better to have a colorized and attractive such seal as opposed to the white + pencil one, which is of lesser value in present form. Thanks!   Spartan7W §   13:28, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

Update: I have finished my 1950 colorization, as you can here see. I have placed it in the position of Lincoln and Grant series boxes. For Washington, as no seal was then used, retroactive use of the present seal is appropriate, in my opinion.   Spartan7W §   18:13, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Constitution of Mississippi

Hello! Your submission of Constitution of Mississippi at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Illegitimate Barrister, we really need to hear from you soon on your plans for the nomination, given the issues that have been raised—in particular, whether you will be expanding it further. Please respond. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:23, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

Scotland flags

Hi. I see you've added a new, "1542" flag variant to Template:Country data Scotland, and you've already replaced the default variant with that one in some articles (such as 1998 FIFA World Cup). First, could you please confirm that all articles dealing with events up to 2003 should now be displaying the "1542" variant, and all articles dealing with later events should be displaying the default variant? Second, what was the precise date in 2003 when the flag change took place? This is of interest for articles such as UEFA Euro 2004 qualifying Group 5, which covers events throughout the year 2003. Please confirm this for me, and then I'll adjust some more Scotland flags where that's necessary. --Theurgist (talk) 01:30, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

@Theurgist: According to the BBC, the exact colors were specified on February 18, 2003. So, before that date, use the 1542 colors, and after that date, use the present colors. Regards, – Illegitimate Barrister, 01:55, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! By the way, the {{ping}} function works only if a new signature is added to the page with the very same edit (and it has to be a separate new one, not a new one overwriting the old one). --Theurgist (talk) 16:35, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

Coast Guard Squadron One

IB: What is the reasoning behind changing the term "Republic of Vietnam" to "South Vietnamese"? I recently changed the term to "Republic of Vietnam" throughout the article to make everything uniform. If there is a good reason, I'm not opposed, but it is going to mean a lot of edits to change everything back. Trying to bring article to "A" Class. Cuprum17 (talk) 17:51, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

We use the common names. South Vietnam is also the exact title of the corresponding Wikipedia article, so best to use that. Just for punctuality and brevity, and for neutrality's sake. – Illegitimate Barrister, 18:00, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
Would you look the rest of the article over, because I made about a dozen changes from South Vietnamese Navy To Republic of Vietnam Navy? Cuprum17 (talk) 18:15, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
Sure thang. Also, the 'n' should be lowercase for South Vietnamese navy, since it's not a proper noun. Like "United States Coast Guard" vis-a-vis "American coast guard". But, "Republic of Vietnam Navy" is fine for use the main body text, since it's a proper noun. – Illegitimate Barrister, 18:16, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
I note that the actual article is titled Republic of Vietnam Navy...what gives??? Cuprum17 (talk) 18:19, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
It's usually this way for other articles as well. South Korea's navy article is "Republic of Korea Navy" whereas the main nation article is "South Korea". Wikipedia MOS knows best, I suppose. – Illegitimate Barrister, 18:21, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, IB! Thanks for your edits on my material throughout the past year. I probably need someone following me around cleaning up my edits more than I would like to admit. lol! I don't know how much time I can spend on Wikipedia this coming year as I am beginning a off-the-frame overhaul of my 1946 Willys CJ-2A Jeep early this spring. This is going to take most of my time for at least two or three months. I have owned it since 1969 and I have ignored its condition for far too long. Got to run, but I thought that I would leave you a short Seasons Greetings message, old buddy... Cuprum17 (talk) 18:24, 24 December 2015 (UTC).

Thanks for the friendly words, Cup-Cup. Good luck with the overhaul; I myself have an old car that needs some fixing up too, you can see it here. Had it since 2005, but seemed to have broken down on me this year. Parts of your original edit have been edited by several editors. There is no reason to add nationality to the infobox and there is no reason to change England to United Kingdom (most articles will simply state England, Scotland or Wales instead of United Kingdom).

Murder of Kyle Dinkheller

Hi. I noticed you have recently been editing the Murder of Kyle Dinkheller and Murder of Darrell Lunsford pages. It was actually me who originally created the Darrell Lunsford page and added it to wikipedia - my first ever article. The reason I'm messaging you is to point out a simple search issue. If you search on the wikipedia page for simply Kyle Dinkheller, the redirect link that comes up is this: Kyle dinkheller, with the "d" being in lower case instead of upper. You can see the redirect page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kyle_dinkheller&redirect=no. Is it not more appropriate to delete this redirect page and simply just have this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kyle_Dinkheller&redirect=no as the redirect page with the "d" being in upper case? Perhaps you could fix this? Regards. DrAcHeNWiNgZz (talk) 00:12, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Stop icon You may be blocked from editing without further warning the next time you inappropriately alter an image. I have asked you many times to stop causing these errors by inserting "|border" into the infoboxes in articles. The next stop is ANI. This is ridiculous that you insist on this unneeded stupid border on images even though it causes errors. The only reason I have not already brought this to ANI is that you improve so many articles with your gnome work. Stop it. Dave Dial (talk) 01:46, 17 March 2016 (UTC)

Your threats don't scare me; I've dealt with your kind before. What I am doing does not violate the MOS in any way whatsoever. It's not "disruptive" and it only is to YOU because YOU don't like it.
