Speedy deletion nomination of Sheila Bird
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Sheila Bird requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://www.umassmedcwm.org/correctionalhealthconference/news.htm. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. czar ♔ 15:53, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for letting me know. Alas, the article itself was deleted two minutes later, and I was unable to address the alleged copyvio. I will raise this with User:Anthony Bradbury, as it was he who did the deletion. Edwardx (talk) 18:41, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Voice of the Listener & Viewer
Hello Edwardx,
I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Voice of the Listener & Viewer for deletion, because it's too short to identify the subject of the article.
If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Rudra john cena (talk) 11:12, 24 January 2014 (UTC)
Malcolm Quantrill's place of death
Many thanks for cleaning up the page on Malcolm Quantrill I just coined a few hours ago! I'm hoping to add more in the next day or two. However, you have removed the place of his death. I see the old system of placing place of birth and death on the first line is hardly in use these days. But without a picture, it does not yet seem worth adding an infobox. So where to place the fact he died in College Station) Texas? Seems such a simply stupid question - you've complicated it ;) --TTKK (talk) 19:33, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
- Oops, didn't mean to complicate matters, but I can now see that I have. Yes, the WP:MOS advises against birth and death place on the first line, unless it really is a defining factor in someone's life. So, I've added an infobox. A photo would be nice. Edwardx (talk) 21:51, 25 January 2014 (UTC)

Yes, and thanks for the work on the Hare and Billet too. And here's a link to the viewstats tool. We should try it with a list of pubs to see which gets the most hits... Andrew (talk) 00:03, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
- I'd just created "My favs" as a list of all the articles I've created, and now I'm wondering what article could be started that would be more popular than "Swiss passport". I'll think about a pubs list too. Edwardx (talk) 00:10, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

Feline-focused message of appreciation
Dear Edward, I'm afraid I'll have to wait until I am not at work to create my own award for you... in the meantime, I hope you'll be content with a small off-the-shelf cat. Thank you SO MUCH for your kindness and generosity and bags of help at last night's Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon at the Royal Society. I learned so much from you in such a short time, and you were incredibly kind and patient. I am determined to put the things you've taught me into practice... and I will have a nose around the many pages you've created (I see you like London pubs- have you been to the Pride of Spitalfields? It's well worth a visit!). I've looked at the German silent movie star's page, by the way - number one on your list - and smiled as I remembered your anecdote about WL:OVERLINKING! Thank you so much once again. Karen (9frm)

Your DYK nomination of The Flask, Highgate
Hi, the maximum allowed length of a DYK hook is 200 characters, but the one you supplied is 220, excluding "(pictured)" which doesn't count. The hook will have to be edited or replaced with a shorter one. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 23:53, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for your kind guidance. I have rephrased the hook to fall under the 200 character limit. Edwardx (talk) 00:11, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, the length is fine now. And, as an added bonus, I think the hook reads better now too. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 00:29, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- Agreed - the revised hook is definitely "hookier". Edwardx (talk) 01:00, 6 March 2014 (UTC)

FYI, I've just nominated the Upper Flask, which I came across while looking into this. We just need to get The Flask, Hampstead done too for a hat-trick! Philafrenzy has done good work getting that started but it needs another push to get it up DYK level too. I'll try to find some time for that myself tomorrow... Andrew (talk) 01:12, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- Andrew, it's all quite amusing - a trio of flasks. I'll endeavour to fit that into tomorrow's schedule too, for the final DYK. Edwardx (talk)
- It's good to see it all come together. Thanks for getting the DYK done and I've gotten around to chipping in with what I have from London's Best Pubs - a book which I picked up to help with these topics. And so to bed... Andrew (talk) 23:58, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

Thank you for expanding our knowledge about international personalities in a vast field of the arts, architecture, business, choreography, dance, you name it, and not to forget breweries and pubs! Cheers, hoping for more, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:37, 3 April 2014 (UTC) |
- Thank you for you kind appreciation. More will surely follow... Edwardx (talk) 17:53, 3 April 2014 (UTC)
- Could you expand your medal for Andy a bit, and sign? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:00, 3 April 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, that was a rather poor effort! Thank you for the gentle nudge. Edwardx (talk) 18:07, 3 April 2014 (UTC)
- Great work! I've loved reading your missives on London's mad public and private houses. Gareth E Kegg (talk) 19:14, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Leonard Wyburd
Hello! Your submission of Leonard Wyburd at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Yoninah (talk) 00:16, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks - answered at the nom page. Edwardx (talk) 10:51, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
- Have you got a Westminster library card? You don't have to be in that borough. Allows you to access all sorts of great electronic resources from home, like The Times archive. https://www.westminster.gov.uk/online-resources-a-z-list Philafrenzy (talk) 13:53, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
- No, but I should, as I'm a member of libraries in four other boroughs. But, I do have a Wellcome Library card, which gives me access to The Times archive, if I can remember where I put it! I'm trying to get your Gordon Smith up to DYK level. Also Walter Rye and Kristīne Opolais, if you're interested in either. Edwardx (talk) 14:01, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
- I have to get my free paper from you know where now before they close, but I will look later. Philafrenzy (talk) 14:08, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
- I have added the full obit from the London Philatelist for Smith to the talk page. You might be able to make something of either the rowing or freemasonry (if you can understand it) or possibly that he had a per-eminent collection of stamps of South Australia. Might be popular with people from those climes. Philafrenzy (talk) 16:36, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. Popped out to a boat race art studio party. I'll put together a DYK nom later today or tomorrow. Edwardx (talk) 19:05, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
- Actually, it seems that Smith may have rowed in the boat race in the 1880s according to The Times. I don't know if you can access their archive but there is plenty of rowing stuff from the 1880s there. I don't have time to go through it now but DYK could be ...that Gordon Smith who rowed for Cambridge in the University Boat Race also formed the greatest collection of the stamps of South Australia of his time. (all needs checking) Pity to just miss the race itself. Philafrenzy (talk) 15:00, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
- I've found my Wellcome Library card, but it may not be needed. I've checked the List of Cambridge University Boat Race crews, but he is not to be found. I'll probably go with something philatelic... Edwardx (talk) 20:12, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- Did he row for the University, just not in the boat race? If so you have a double barreled rowing and philatelic hook. I warn you, I may not be able to find a picture of a South Australia stamp owned by Smith, though I do now have his own image. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:22, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- Or "rowed at Henley" ? Philafrenzy (talk) 20:25, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- How about "...that Gordon Smith was a rower, mathematician, barrister, army major, leading freemason and had the finest collection of the unused stamps of South Australia?" Edwardx (talk) 21:06, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- Cool! Polymath! "...that Victorian polymath Gordon Smith was a rower, mathematician, barrister, army major, leading freemason and formed the finest collection of the stamps of South Australia of his day?" Is polymath too strong? Philafrenzy (talk) 21:15, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. I'm fine with polymath. I'll go with that and see what happens. Now I have to find a DYK to review. Edwardx (talk) 21:22, 8 April 2014 (UTC)

DYK for Leonard Wyburd
On 8 April 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Leonard Wyburd, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Leonard Wyburd was the first head of Liberty's Furnishing and Decoration Studio in the West End of London, aged only 18? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Leonard Wyburd. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |
Thanks from me and the wiki Victuallers (talk) 16:02, 8 April 2014 (UTC)
re: Yuhui Choe
Thanks for the note - it definitely seems unlikely that the image is the uploader's own work. I've tagged it for deletion at Commons and struck it from the DYK nom. Thanks for letting me know! 97198 (talk) 10:28, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
- And thank you for doing that. Great image, and I would have loved to have seen it on the front page. Alas, too good to be true. Edwardx (talk) 10:35, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, it would've been a great image! For what it's worth, I also removed a paragraph from the article which looks like it was lifted directly from here. 97198 (talk) 10:38, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
- As that copyvio was from the same contributor as the image, it is reasonable to infer that the probability of the image being the uploader's own work is very close to zero. Thanks again. Edwardx (talk) 10:45, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
- That's what I thought too. Should be good now though! 97198 (talk) 10:51, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

I appreciate your help with the DYK nom and the article. It's at almost 8000 views already. Drmies (talk) 04:32, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
- 8000 already is most impressive. My contribution was very modest, and your appreciation is most kind. Yes, Frans van der Lugt is in Prep Area 1, along with "my" Yuhui Choe. Edwardx (talk) 09:54, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
DYK for Yuhui Choe
On 11 April 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Yuhui Choe, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Yuhui Choe replaced the injured Natalia Osipova at short notice in the lead role in Sleeping Beauty for The Royal Ballet and "appeared radiantly unfazed by the challenge"? Stamp shows
You won't get much DYK material out of these. I am just gap filling. I will try to do something more interesting soon. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:12, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
- Indeed. And very thin pickings with my minor film actors and most of the pubs. Edwardx (talk) 22:47, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
DYK for Anthony Minoprio
On 15 April 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Anthony Minoprio, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Anthony Minoprio provided a new master plan for Crawley New Town after the previous planner suddenly resigned in "an extraordinary decision [... which was] never completely explained"? Bull's Eyes
If I expand it further, what about DYK that Dr. Hugo Goeggel had one of the largest collections of Brazilian Bull's Eyes ever formed? Philafrenzy (talk) 21:21, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
- 807/1500 characters of the way there. I'll see what else I can find. Your hook idea is good; perhaps it would get more clicks without "Brazilian"? Edwardx (talk) 22:05, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
- I don't mind but Brazilian raises the question what is different about bull's eyes in Brazil? Which makes it even weirder. I have the Corinphila auction catalogue so should easily be able to expand it further shortly. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:47, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
- Incidentally, it's brilliant that he is a Dr. too isn't it? Ties in nicely with the eyeball thing. It's all a bit "Boys from Brazil" and weird experiments at secret camps. He sounds German too. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:53, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
- I've reconsidered and am inclined to agree with you that it does sound better with "Brazilian". It's difficult to evaluate objectively, when you already know what they really are. And the Dr and German sounding name all help... Edwardx (talk) 23:06, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

- Very good. A bit more research, and he'll be another polymath. Another 276 characters and I'll start the DYK process. Edwardx (talk) 08:35, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
- Expanded from the bio in the catalogue. In top philately it helps to own 1/3rd of a $700M company. I need to establish the hook more later then you are good to go. Philafrenzy (talk) 13:45, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
- You never told me about your company! Article is coming along very nicely. Bit busy with "real life" today. Edwardx (talk) 14:08, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
- You mean my holding in Royal Mail obviously. Is my 0.000000000001% holding a conflict of interest that I need to declare? Philafrenzy (talk) 14:50, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

Keta Lagoon
Keta Lagoon is the page I mentioned at the meet up. Wikimedia Ghana are getting involved in Wiki Loves Earth 2014 in May 2014, so there is potential for more photos. Do you think this has potential for a good article or featured article? (I shall also drop a note on Philafrenzy's talk page. 11:13, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
- It certainly looks long enough, and there are plenty of references. As you say, it could do with more images. I've never been involved in the GA process, so I'm not sure that I could give any meaningful advice. How about User:Johnbod, as he has several GA credits? Edwardx (talk) 11:47, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

All-Hall
Thanks for starting the Goldsmiths' Hall, I've just created Broderers' Hall and I'll DYK'em today. Gareth E Kegg (talk) 09:34, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
- Great work. My WP time is mostly spent on content creation, London buildings (especially pubs) and people. Your plan to improve coverage of all the livery halls is an excellent one, and I'll try to get involved. There will no doubt be much of past and present interest to uncover. And I imagine that most of them are within walking distance of Wikimania, so that's another reason to do it sooner rather than later. Edwardx (talk) 12:51, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
British publicans
Category created. Very appropriate for St. George's Day methinks and rich vein of British "characters" for you to do if you feel like it. Might be tricky to disambig the publican from the pub though. Cheers! Philafrenzy (talk) 12:17, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
- Cheers indeed. A very timely reminder, or I might easily have forgotten that Young's have kindly invited me to partake of some of their finest ale today at The Duke's Head, gratis. They don't even know that I started the article. Might stop for coffee and a paper on the way... Edwardx (talk) 13:36, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

DYK for The Widow's Son, London
On 25 April 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The Widow's Son, London, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that The Widow's Son pub is named for the legend of a widow who every Good Friday baked a hot cross bun for her only son, in the hope that he was not lost at sea and would one day return home? - Thank you kindly. I've done some copy editing, added a few categories and tried to slip in mentions of those concerned into other articles. Plenty more can be done! Edwardx (talk) 20:24, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
There's an interesting emigration story here but it is another philatelist. Unfortunately the Prussian oath bit is really just speculation on my part. Philafrenzy (talk) 01:22, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
- Just to clarify, I have a source for men from Schleswig-Holstein emigrating rather than swear an oath to Prussia, just not that that was why Tamsen left. Philafrenzy (talk) 10:42, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
- I'm confident that we'll think of something, but I'm not sure what just yet... Edwardx (talk) 20:22, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
- I've expanded it a bit including finding a great photo. The best potential is in the non-philatelic material probably. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:36, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
- "DYK that Emil Tamsen was born in Schleswig-Holstein, emigrated to the Transvaal in 1880, fought for the British in the First Boer War but became a friend of Paul Kruger and other Boer leaders?" That picture demands to be on the front page IMHO. He looks like he has just had an electric shock. Philafrenzy (talk) 16:21, 27 April 2014 (UTC)
- Good, but it does feel perhaps a little verbose. I'll have a think in the morning. Edwardx (talk) 22:37, 27 April 2014 (UTC)
- "DYK that Emil Tamsen was born in Schleswig-Holstein, but emigrated to the Transvaal aged 18 where he fought for the British in the First Boer War?" Philafrenzy (talk) 22:59, 27 April 2014 (UTC)
- I prefer the first one, and will do the nom today! Edwardx (talk) 14:22, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
- There is Nairn Transport Company shortly if you are not exhausted. They had huge "Pullman" buses that traversed the desert. Philafrenzy (talk) 14:34, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
- Great photo - I look forward to doing the DYK. Alas, when I made the journey from Beirut to Damascus, it was in an ancient shared Mercedes taxi, as that was all that was available. Edwardx (talk) 16:07, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
- Excellent louche one-upmanship there Edward. Kudos! Philafrenzy (talk) 18:19, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
- Glad you enjoyed that. Tamsen nom just done. My only thought is that you can't see him that well in the image size that would appear on the front page. What do you think about replacing that one with a cropped one? Perhaps the one on his page could stay the same? Edwardx (talk) 23:27, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
- Were Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre in that taxi too? Was anyone murdered en-route? Perhaps a famous detective was conveniently at hand? Yes, it should be reduced. Inside or outside the frame? The original is actually not very good quality. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:35, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
- Alas, Sid and Pete were otherwise engaged. Down to the inner frame perhaps? We certainly don't want to lose any of that beard, but we need a better look at the spiky punk haircut. Looking at Nairn now. Edwardx (talk) 23:41, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
- Nairn isn't quite ready yet, but feel free to expand it. I have no offline sources left. There is a lot in The Times archive including an obit. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:46, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
- I have created a cropped version here. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:55, 28 April 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. Looks great at the 100x100px (max) size on the DYK nom (done). Nairn is very interesting. Both of the brothers merit articles too. Start one each? Edwardx (talk) 00:01, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
- I knew they might but hadn't got to it. Do it if you think you can sufficiently differentiate them from the company and each other. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:11, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
- Probably, but that will have to wait until tomorrow. Good night! Edwardx (talk) 00:14, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
- Traced Naby to Nåby, near Næstved but not sure that is the right place. Also 1880 might be wrong. Changed hook to teenager. It's actually more powerful as teenager than 18 anyway. Philafrenzy (talk) 01:33, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

Swedish source say her voice is soprano, but specifically Lyric soprano. Can you make a slight correction? (Lyric soprano is slightly lower than coloratura). Hafspajen (talk) 16:06, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

- Yes, 5000 is good for a non-picture hook, but that set was on the front page for quite some time. It might interest you to know that the hook was changed after six hours on the front page, but from "was called 'a svelte blonde beauty with the figure of a dancer' when singing" to "sang", with an edit summary of "Less misogynist, perhaps?". You (Hafspajen) have a somewhat tangential mention in the discussion at User_talk:Pakaran#Malin_Byström. Edwardx (talk) 20:02, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

Nairn
Bingo! They had a Harley-Davidson dealership first. More soon. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:10, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
- Excellent. There are plenty of hook options there. Edwardx (talk) 09:03, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
- I am not really finished with it but it probably ought to go in the queue now. "DYK that two Harley-Davidson dealers from New Zealand started the Nairn Transport Company which ran Buicks and Cadillacs across the desert from Beirut to Baghdad?" Philafrenzy (talk) 21:29, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
- Good hook. I heard/read that the perfect (in the sense of value) postcard would be a suffragette wheeling her Harley onto the Titanic. Not had much time for WP lately. Five days from 27 April is tomorrow, so I'll see if there's anything I can add and then do the DYK. I won't forget! Edwardx (talk) 21:39, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, the Harley bit was a gift from the Wiki gods. I have a postcard like that. It also has a stamp like this on the back and is signed by an E. Presley. Is it valuable? Philafrenzy (talk) 21:51, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
- Would be worth more if the stamp was used in period - Elvis wasn't born until 17 years after its issue date. I have a Gibraltar passport "signed" by Elvis Presley. The passport is genuine, but the signature is almost certainly fake. Edwardx (talk) 21:59, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
- And it came with a "certificate of authenticity" from a Nigerian prince too. You can't trust anyone these days. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:05, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for doing the DYK nom. I did a bit of tidying and added it to the main noms page, T:TDYK. Edwardx (talk) 22:04, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, now I know why I never do that bit. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:12, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Sorry for removing the entry from the deaths list. I copy-pasted her name into the Search field and an article title didn't pop up so I assumed there was no article. But it's just that the database hasn't had time to catch up. Honestly not sure if she's considered notable enough to have her own article, but the page does not seem to be a good candidate for speedy deletion since there were some sources and she's an OBE. Thought about nominating for deletion, but didn't want to be a dick and jump the gun since it's a brand new article. I looked through Google a bit and honestly wasn't struck by the page hits, but I honestly know nothing about her and I don't know much about the art field in general. I wanted to give you more time to expand the article and demonstrate its importance. I am going to tag it with some issues and will check on it in a few days. You're a more experienced editor than I, so I trust you know what you're doing. Just letting you know :) EvergreenFir (talk) 22:18, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
- It is difficult to imagine how someone could have a full-length obituary in The Guardian, yet fail to meet our notability criteria. Edwardx (talk) 22:44, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
- Fair point. Just not much coverage of her outside the obit that I could find. Again, I do not mean to be rude with all this. EvergreenFir (talk) 22:47, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
- Please don't take it personally; I don't see your tagging as rudeness, although perhaps a little premature. Do bear in mind that this sort of drive-by tagging puts off new editors. There is also a Times obit (can't see much without having to pay) and plenty of other coverage. Edwardx (talk) 23:30, 5 May 2014 (UTC)

DYK along the lines of "produced the first new scholarly edition of Machiavelli's The Prince for X years"? Philafrenzy (talk) 14:31, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- Or how about "DYK that Lawrence Burd had 8,000 Penny Blacks in his collection?" After all, it is the most famous stamp as far as the man on the Clapham omnibus is concerned? I'll look at the article later. Edwardx (talk) 15:40, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- I wouldn't know Edward, I never go south of the river. I don't mind doing Penny Blacks but I didn't want to overdo it on the stamp collectors. Do you have anything from Ancestry? I can add more later about books and stamps. Philafrenzy (talk) 17:33, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- On the other hand, I never leave Zones 1 and 2. My Ancestry membership has lapsed. As for the stamp angle, we may be the only people who have noticed them. And few if any people look at the DYK section the two or three times a day. But I've no strong view on the subject, and I'm struggling to add anything to the page. Edwardx (talk) 22:23, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

- I don't think I can add much more without additional sources, which I don't have. How about "DYK that Machiavelli expert Lawrence Burd owned 8000 Penny Blacks?" You are welcome to joint credit. Philafrenzy (talk) 19:56, 10 May 2014 (UTC)

- Thanks, the way he talks about the plating work is extraordinary, like a spiritual quest. There is an article about that project if I knew enough about plating to do it, and was interested in plating! Ernest Floyd was also involved but I can't find much to say about him. Just came across these here:
Brilliant article material if you are interested in the slightly earlier period. All out of copyright I believe. Good to see you today Edward. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:05, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, I've had a bit of a look and there is some good stuff there. When I studied the images of individual actors, almost all have well-illustarted articles, but there are probably a few gaps. Edwardx (talk) 10:09, 12 May 2014 (UTC)
- Don't forget the advertising, the suppliers and venues etc (I know you won't). It's a bit of a political correctness minefield too I notice, but if handled carefully those may be the most interesting performers. Philafrenzy (talk) 10:46, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Must be a DYK about a gin so pure it could cure (or protect against) cholera, malaria and typhus. WWI did for it as a brand I would think. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:54, 11 May 2014 (UTC)
- Agreed, these outlandish claims make good DYKs. I'll see what I can add - looking forward to it. And WWI was unsurprisingly very bad for German-sounding products in the UK. Edwardx (talk) 10:49, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Pottering
Thanks for taking a look at Saloop. As you have good experience with listed buildings, please could you look at Killiechassie which seems to have gotten bogged down. As a QPQ, I'll help out with your pubs, if you need more info. Do you have a list? Andrew (talk) 12:17, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
- I can probably do a bit more on Saloop. I've had a quick look at Killiechassie and it should be relatively easy to get the DYK process on that one moving again. I'll attend to it later. As for the pubs, there's a list of all the articles I've created on my userpage - all the pubs there are Grade II or II* listed. Many of them should be fairly easy to expand by 5x to get to a DYK level... If any catch your eye, I'd be very happy to collaborate. I'm also planning to do a separate list on London's Grade II pubs without articles, but when I find any, I usually just create a quick stub anyway. Edwardx (talk) 13:28, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
- Later turned out to be two days later, but I've done the review. No rush on the pubs, as I'll be rather busy until Monday night. So, you'll have plenty of time to see if any catch your eye and are DYK-able. Edwardx (talk) 18:47, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. I recognise a few of those pubs like the London Apprentice and will see what I can do. Note, by the way, that another editor has found Mare Street and is doing good work with that ... Andrew (talk) 20:49, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
- Good to see my old street being well looked after. The Dolphin, Hackney is on Mare Street, but probably not one of the better prospects. Edwardx (talk) 21:12, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
- Killiechassie has top billing in the current DYK list. Many thanks for your assistance with this. Andrew (talk) 20:06, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

The article Frank Crocker has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- No evidence that this person is of any notability - the only source cited which refers to Crocker himself, rather than the pub and the dubious tales which arose long after Crocker's death is WikiTree, a non-RS genealogy website.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. AndyTheGrump (talk) 16:43, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

Two days left for the lobotomised professor if you are interested. I discovered it was a common procedure at just the time he had it done. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:26, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

- Thanks, E.J. Rapson's party trick was to identify ancient coins by touch and he was such a slow worker that one war went and another was about to happen before he could finish Vol II of this: The Cambridge History of India. Just say if you are tired of doing them or they are not worthy as I can keep churning them out I think... Philafrenzy (talk) 00:02, 24 May 2014 (UTC)
- Rapson next! I've just spoken with András Bereznay, who knows of no earlier historical atlas of RSA (apparently there is also a rather nice Afrikaans one from 1928), and could provide a scan of a map from Walker's atlas. Would that be helpful? Edwardx (talk) 08:46, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
- Excellent work! You are going above and beyond the call of duty now. I have most of The Times historical atlases, including the European one drawn by Bereznay. If you were thinking of "drew the first HA of SA", I was thinking of "could identify ancient coins just by touch". Could both be combined? Also, if you could do it, "DYK that the first volumes of The Cambridge History of India used ancient coins where they had no written sources to rely upon. (upon which to rely) Philafrenzy (talk) 10:48, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. I think you might be conflating Walker and Rapson into one hook there! Anyway, I've asked for a scan to add a low res image of it as fair use. Or maybe not, as it is a 1922 publication? Walker is an image-free article at present. Edwardx (talk) 10:04, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

- See your talk page for details. Scans have just arrived. Walker nom and your ALT1 are done. Rapson deadline is tomorrow. Relax! Edwardx (talk) 10:39, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, but where have the scans arrived from. Do you have a full time team working for you now at the British Library? Philafrenzy (talk) 10:55, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- I suppose you cannot disclose your secret working methods. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:04, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- From András Bereznay, who has a huge historical atlas collection. But they are photos, as the atlas was too big to scan. I'll sort one out this afternoon and add it to the article. Edwardx (talk) 11:14, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- Interested to see them. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:19, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- I've added just one, as can only go for fair use. Edwardx (talk) 22:14, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- Great, The Cambridge History of India and Wolseley Haig (when expanded) are possibles. He was one of the Haigs. If you are up to the Cambridge History it will need to be done soon. I don't mind leaving it as there is an unlimited supply of new ones. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:29, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- I'll do my best. Just done a review to support Eric A. Walker, now for the nom... That will be it for today. Edwardx (talk) 22:35, 26 May 2014 (UTC)
- Cambridge History nom just done. Short, but sweet, I'm quite proud of it! Edwardx (talk) 10:07, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
- Excellent work, pithy and makes you wonder why. Philafrenzy (talk) 10:14, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Prince Rupert Loewenstein
Plenty of hook possibilities there. Don't forget to credit IBO. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:57, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, I'm working on something and will have it up before bedtime. I always try to include anyone I reasonably can - have had as many as four authors before! Edwardx (talk) 21:47, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
- The hook is okay, but there might be something better, maybe to do with his Catholcism and both his sons becoming Catholic priests contrasting with the Stones? Edwardx (talk) 22:15, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
- They are both good. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:25, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, but I've an inkling that something a bit better might be possible... Edwardx (talk) 23:03, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
- Quite possibly, there is a lot more to add if you can do it referring only to dead people from your copious literature on the subject. I have done enough on gin I think for that to go through now. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:27, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for crediting me about the article, Edwardx (talk) and Philafrenzy (talk). I have found some information about Prince Rupert that I added recently. IBO (talk) 11:34, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- Your appreciation is most gratifying. We anticipate that the article will receive a lot of traffic when it is mentioned on the front page in due course. I've left a message on your talkpage about another topic you may enjoy adding to. Edwardx (talk) 09:53, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- Is there any information about the house "Petersham" the Prince lived in? IBO (talk) 08:32, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yes - I've just added some. Edwardx (talk) 08:38, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

DYK for Monika Kinley
On 28 May 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Monika Kinley, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that outsider art dealer Monika Kinley started her career in the art world by selling postcards at the Tate Gallery? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Monika Kinley. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

Richard Burn
Did you know that Richard Burn from Liverpool won a medal for famine services in India? Philafrenzy (talk) 07:18, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- When you have a moment, could you go through that Gazetteer and write all the missing articles? At your earliest convenience please. Thanks. Philafrenzy (talk) 08:54, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- Of course, but you'll have to wait until my next reincarnation. I've done my best to add the article - it is a struggle. However, I did manage to link to him from a number of other articles, and link to the medal article. I can't see a better hook idea. Will try to do a DYK nom later today. Edwardx (talk) 09:26, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- Good work, I had not noticed that the Gazetteer already existed. Interesting that all these started as dry names with just first initials in the Cambridge history. And some people say it has all been done - piffle. Philafrenzy (talk) 09:33, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, the idea that it has all been done is absurd - we're demonstrating otherwise on a daily basis. Edwardx (talk) 09:39, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
- This is not the time for a philosophical discussion but you could argue that it is the important bit that is happening now, once you go beyond capital cities, Manchester United and Madonna. Philafrenzy (talk) 09:51, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Wolseley Haig
Did you know that Wolseley Haig fought "dacoits" in Burma before becoming a Scottish herald? Philafrenzy (talk) 22:49, 28 May 2014 (UTC)
Loewenstein
You may guess that I found Keith Richards' Life in a charity shop. Makes a change from The Cambridge History of ... If you want to borrow it let me know. I think you might already have it. Plenty about Gibbs in the index too but haven't got to that bit yet. Philafrenzy (talk) 18:15, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, don't think I have that, and Keef's stuff about Gibbs looks rather lively. Of course, it is a BLP, so we should aim for NPOV and proper citations. Spotted a fat Stones biography in my local library yesterday, but my bag wa already full with shopping from our favourite supermarket. I've added Burn and Haig to the DYK nom to do list on my userpage, but Gibbs' deadline is first, so will do the nom for him tomorrrow evening. Edwardx (talk) 22:58, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
- You managed to fill a whole bag with £5 of shopping? Impressive. I view it as a sort of game. Eating well for £5 per day while staying well informed. I may write a book. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:06, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
- £10 if you please (well, less £2, less £1.20). And it was a rucksack. If the book is a success, I may start a page on here... Edwardx (talk) 23:15, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
- Keep up, it is £5 Monday to Friday starting yesterday. Still £10 weekends. Didn't you get the email? Philafrenzy (talk) 23:20, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. Didn't know about that. I feel cheated now. Have you joined MyJohnLewis yet? Free coffee/tea AND cake once a month. My local one, Peter Jones, has a nice cafe on the top floor with lovely views. Edwardx (talk) 23:35, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
- I will investigate. Maybe it is you who should be writing the book. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:40, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

This one is more rocks than rock n' roll. Philafrenzy (talk) 00:55, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- Indeed. I think there are several more colourful characters from 1960s London to do. I've added The Indian Antiquary to my DYK noms-to-do list on my userpage. That way it won't get overlooked. Edwardx (talk)
- Thanks. I still need to polish it up a bit anyway. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:37, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- Outstanding is anything about the last version, which I have nothing on, including whether it had a "The" in the title; and the list of editors. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:38, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- Dropped the list of editors as too tedious even for me. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:46, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

How about "Christopher Gibbs (together with Robert Fraser) is credited with inventing Swinging London and was the first man in England to wear flared trousers in 1961". Or we could use something from Keith on Gibby about "amyl nitrate popper"... Edwardx (talk) 23:07, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

- Burn down Haig next. Edwardx (talk) 21:41, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

Gibbs
There is little useable (if you know what I mean) about Gibbs in the Richards biography. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:30, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
- Did a lot on it. Noticeable that there is a complete blank from 1970 to 2000. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:47, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
- Great work. The 30-year gap is odd, isn't it? I guess he was just getting on with his antique dealing and interiors business. Edwardx (talk) 09:27, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
- That is most likely, though you do sometimes see aged teddy boys, hippies etc on the tube who are frozen in time. The importation of Moroccan style into London where it may have influenced hippie culture is an interesting aspect. Philafrenzy (talk) 09:44, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Surprisingly, almost there on DYK size. Philafrenzy (talk) 13:08, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, scrapping together 1500 characters gets easier with experience. I've add Men in Vogue to the DYK deadlines list on my userpage. Edwardx (talk) 13:15, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
- Well over now. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:45, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
- One would hope so. Sadly the "DYK check" tool does not count anything in a bulleted list, so we are all of 7 characters short. As you will have noticed, your redlinks have led to Rupert Lycett Green and Michael Rainey. Lycett Green will definitely be a DYK. Too early to say about Rainey. I'm enjoying the '60s that I was too young to appreciate the first time round. I have a Mr. Fish shirt somewhere and should dig it out to wear whilst editing in this area, but I've just discovered that they go for good money on a certain online auction site. Edwardx (talk) 09:58, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- I am sure we can find seven somewhere. Good work on the others. Will you be wearing a kaftan by the time you get to the 70s? I am doing Man About Town (magazine). Feel free to join in. Philafrenzy (talk) 10:09, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Working on Rainey right now, but will look at Man About Town. I always knew that the idea of the '60s as some sort of working class movement was a myth; now I find out it was hardly even middle class - it's riddled with Old Etonians and the aristocracy. You are of course welcome to contribute to any of mine and get the appropriate DYK credit.Edwardx (talk) 10:18, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Everything in British life is riddled with old Etonians and the aristocracy! They don't need to be members of the Illuminati, the conspiracy is right out there in public view. There is nothing stopping you from creating articles about Co-operative associations in Macclesfield of course... Philafrenzy (talk) 10:27, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Edwardx,
I had been thinking of creating this article many moons ago. So I was very pleased to see that you had created it and that I was able to find a free image. SethWhales talk 21:31, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
- That is most welcome - the same could be said of most articles, but this one REALLY needed an image! Thanks. Edwardx (talk) 21:36, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
DYK for One Million Plan
Hi Edward, just wondering whether I have addressed all you questions at Template:Did you know nominations/One Million Plan? Oncenawhile (talk) 07:56, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Alas, you have not. I would have replied sooner at the DYK nom page, but I've been waiting to hear from someone for a few days. Anyway, the gist of my proposal is to seek a Third Opinion on this article (see WP:THIRDOPINION). Would you have any issues with that? Edwardx (talk) 09:49, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Technically we already have a third opinion, given Piotr's original contribution, but I will not object to whatever route you want to take to end this. I must admit I am annoyed with your refusal to trust scholarly sources without any evidence to the contrary. Maybe I am missing something. If you could ELI5 what is driving your unwillingness to trust the sources, and specifically which sources underpin your view to the contrary (without which surely the debate is all just WP:OR) I would appreciate it. I would also really appreciate if you could give me your thoughts on each of the points I wrote to respond carefully to your last post at the DYK. Instinctively I feel like since you chose to open this can of worms it's only right that you should try to close it instead of passing the buck to a new third party, but if you don't have time to close the can I will be disappointed but will not object. Oncenawhile (talk) 19:28, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Very sorry, but I don't see how one could reasonably call a perfunctory review of an article that should have failed DYK as it was then written a "third opinion". In any event, you have repeatedly failed to respond to my points well before any plausible claim could be made that I failed to address yours. I will now list this at WP:THIRDOPINION. Edwardx (talk) 19:37, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Now added at Wikipedia:Third opinion#Active disagreements, where I have tried to express the disagreement succinctly and neutrally. Edwardx (talk) 20:01, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. You wrote I have "repeatedly failed to respond to [your] points". Of all your questions there was just one that I did not answer directly, which was your request for primary sources. As I explained, these are all in Hebrew. I find your accusation to be insulting and very poor behaviour, given how hard I worked to diligently answer all of your concerns. Oncenawhile (talk) 09:52, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- Please just wait and see what happens with the Third Opinion. Edwardx (talk) 10:09, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- I have added more detail from another source into the article, which is crystal clear re the connection between Ben-Gurion and the later implemented immigration policy.
- As to "Zionist leadership", here is an Israeli government website [1], which should be proof enough. If not, a very quick google search will illustrate clearly that it is a simple descriptive term, used commonly throughout the web and the scholarly community. Oncenawhile (talk) 20:32, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Train the Trainers refresher 2014
Hi Edward,
Are you going to the refresher on the 28th? I have created a page for it wmuk:Train the Trainers refresher 2014. Signing-up there isn't compulsory, but we can use the page to coordinate and discuss what we want to get out of the day.
Yaris678 (talk) 16:39, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for your kind reminder. I've been meaning to sign up for this, so have now done so. Food and drink immediately afterwards on the Saturday evening makes most sense, but I'm London-based and flexible. Edwardx (talk) 21:01, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
DYK for Christopher Gibbs
On 2 June 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Christopher Gibbs, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Christopher Gibbs and Robert Fraser are credited with inventing "Swinging London"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Christopher Gibbs. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

London streets? Plenty missing apparently. Philafrenzy (talk) 09:52, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, Andrew Davidson has commented on the huge potential and need for articles about our illustrious streets. I will do the DYK nom for The Indian Antiquary today. I've just started the Gargoyle Club, which may interst you. Edwardx (talk) 10:06, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks in advance for doing the IA. Are you aiming to get Rupert Lycett Green to the relevant level or have you moved on? Philafrenzy (talk) 10:15, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- Please see User:Edwardx#DYK_collaborators_sought for the up-to-date list of articles where I will definitely be doing a DYK nom. You may have noticed that Christopher Gibbs somehow lost his flares, and the DYK its flair, in transitioning to the main page. Edwardx (talk)
- I hadn't noticed, pity. The mystery of the missing flares - would make a good detective story. Philafrenzy (talk) 10:28, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- David Tennant (aristocrat), founder of the Gargoyle Club married Michael Rainey's sister - everything/one seems to be connected. Edwardx (talk) 11:42, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- They are all connected, though it is unclear whether in reality they are any more connected than other elite groups. The leadership in North Korea are probably fairly well connected to each other too. It's the way of the world. Philafrenzy (talk) 12:20, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for the IA. Burlington Gardens is almost ready I think. Philafrenzy (talk) 19:31, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- Managed to find a few things to add/link. I'll add it to my DYK noms-to-do list. Edwardx (talk) 19:58, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks, that was an easy one really. Philafrenzy (talk) 20:02, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- Incidentally, are you aware of this tool which formats Google Books links into wikicode? http://reftag.appspot.com/ Philafrenzy (talk) 20:56, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- That looks handy. Will investigate tomorrow. So, more streets to come? Edwardx (talk) 23:10, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
- It doesn't always quite format them right but still saves a lot of time as all you have to do is tweak them. One thing I have noticed on G Books is that when you scroll to the first pages the publishing details are often different to what they say they are in "About this book". Probably more streets, as one leads to another, as streets are wont to do. Lots of history in them too. I note that the three volume London Past and Present is available both in Internet Archive and in its reprinted form on G Books. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:20, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Vigo Street
Did you know that Glasshouse Street was renamed Vigo Lane in 1702 following the Anglo-Dutch naval victory at the Battle of Vigo Bay?
- Or, that Penguin Books was founded in the street in 1935. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:50, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
- I prefer Penguin Books. But, I'm really struggling to find anything of note to add to the article. Alas, I think you'll have to nominate it yourself. You still have a few noms left before you have to enter the minefield of reviewing others. Edwardx (talk) 22:58, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
- It's a bit on the short side so I will save the the two or three self-noms I have left for longer candidates when your excellent suggestion of extending the time limit is adopted. Philafrenzy (talk) 09:05, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for your kind comments on the 7/10-day proposal. I'm chuffed with the encouraging words and support from so many people. Edwardx (talk) 10:41, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
- As you have the touch, can you propose that the names of pubs be italicised? They are clearly works of fiction. Philafrenzy (talk) 10:51, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
- Looking at MOS:ITALIC, I think it would be a tricky one to argue. After all, don't most things start as fiction before they become established facts? I'm trying to avoid interminable discussions and focus more on quietly creating new content. Okay, I slipped up with challenging the DYK nom for One Million Plan, but I've only myself to blame for that! Edwardx (talk) 14:01, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
- Quietly getting on with it is exactly my view too. I am sure you are right that pubs cannot be italicised, though every time I type the name of one I have to resist the urge to italicise it. Streets are going well. Each turns out to be quite expandable. Philafrenzy (talk) 14:31, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
- And each street literally leads to another... Edwardx (talk) 14:38, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, but not necessarily a red link. I may get a map and highlight the missing ones then I could string 20 together. Philafrenzy (talk) 14:42, 6 June 2014 (UTC)

The proper procedure here is to merge anything useful from your new article into the one that has existed for years, and then redirect if necessary (which it isn't his name is "Rainer" and he is called "Ray" by his friends). Please revert your edits. --Randykitty (talk) 19:10, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- Sorry about that. Everything from the old article has been included. A quick search on Google for "Rainer Guillery" gets 331 results, and "Ray Guillery" gets 9720, and the first three pages (at least) are all him. Therefore it is sensible to have the article called "Ray Guillery". In the same way, Bill Clinton is really William Clinton, but the article is Bill Clinton. Edwardx (talk) 19:57, 7 June 2014 (UTC)
- He indeed signed some of his editorials in the European Journal of Neuroscience as "Ray", so Ray it is. However, what you did (a copy-paste "move") is still problematic, because it doesn't adhere to WPs licensing... The proper way to do this would have been to move the article "Rainer Guillery" to the new title "Ray Guillery" and then modify it as necessary. The way you did it, the edit history of the article has gone lost. It now looks like you created the article and basically were its only editor, whereas in reality it was created years ago by Slowking4. I'll see whether a history merge can be done to correct this. This may involve a temporary deletion, don't worry about that when you see it, but give me some time to do that (I first have to figure out how, never having done this yet... :-) --Randykitty (talk) 11:24, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for doing a fine job of tidying up my mess. At least we ended up with a better and more up-to-date article. Edwardx (talk) 19:44, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- °That's indeed the most important thing. And don't worry about the "mess" (wasn't that bad anyway): the reason I'll never forget that copy-paste is not the way to moving articles is because the first time I tried to move an article, I did it that way myself... :-) --Randykitty (talk) 21:24, 8 June 2014 (UTC)
- The problem was that I created an article about Ray Guillery, only to then find out there was one about Rainer Guillery, and that they were one and the same person. So, I should have taken the stuff from "my" article and added it to the older one, and not the other way round. And then have moved it. We live and learn. Edwardx (talk) 22:13, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Third opinion request
Hello Edwardx - Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you. As you can probably guess from the fact that I've not responded sooner, I'm probably not the best person to give a third opinion on the matter in question. It's a topic area I tend to avoid at the best of times, and I've had very limited availability in the last 10 days or so. Thank you very much for thinking of me, however; I do appreciate that you thought my opinion would be impartial and valuable. Risker (talk) 02:05, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
- That's quite okay, I had guessed, and not getting involved is the rational choice. Looking at Wikipedia:Third_opinion#Active_disagreements, it's been there nearly a week while other disputes have come and gone. I'm not that surprised. Maybe I'll raise it at DYK talk if nothing happens at 3O soon. Edwardx (talk) 09:00, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Your DYK nomination for The Indian Antiquary
Hello! I reviewed and approved your DYK nomination. I wanted to let you know that I took the liberty of tweaking the wording of the hook, so that it now says "one set of expensive epigraphic illustration plates for The Indian Antiquary had to be sent from London to Bombay three times". I changed it because I thought "once ... had to be sent three times" was confusing. Feel free to change it back if you disagree. (I'm commenting here, rather than there, because I've found it can hang up the promotion if there is discussion about the hook.) --MelanieN (talk) 17:59, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

"Great British Meal"
Do you think you could source this? Would make a great article. You have missed the peas. I am sure it had garden peas too. Philafrenzy (talk) 21:54, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
- A quick internet search looks promising. I'll look into it shortly. Edwardx (talk) 21:59, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
- We have English Breakfast I know. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:00, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
- Great British Meal - much more to add... Edwardx (talk) 22:15, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
- Brilliant. I hope you have plenty of sources. Am I misremembering or is that what they ate at Abigail's Party? Or was it just the prawn cocktail? I will take a look PM tomorrow. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:21, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
- There will be enough for an article, but not sure yet about it being DYK length. The things we stumble across. As for Abigail's Party, I do remember cheese and pineapple on cocktail sticks, but not prawn cocktails. But, maybe the budget for the production I was in many moons ago didn't stretch to prawns. I was "Tony", by the way. Edwardx (talk) 22:28, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
- I should have known. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:37, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
- This should probably be "Great British meal out". Also I envisage DYK trouble over the article name. There is only one actual source for it. Ideas? Philafrenzy (talk) 23:05, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
- Hadn't thought about name issues, but that makes sense. I'll see what I can find tomorrow. The article does look good. Edwardx (talk) 23:44, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
- Subject is well supported, name is not. "Berni Inn meal"? A "Berni"? Philafrenzy (talk) 23:47, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
- As the existing article name is the best one, I think we should run with it and see what happens in the DYK process. At worst, we have to change it. Will continue to try to find sources to back it up. Edwardx (talk) 11:30, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
- Agreed, it's the least worst. Berni Inn meal is good but ties it too closely to Berni Inns. What about "out" and meal in lower case? The "out" bit seems an important part of the experience. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:36, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, meal should really be lower case and maybe "out" should be added. I've added to the lead to reflect this. However, I think we should leave the article name as it is for now, so we don't end up moving it more than once. Maybe a new source or two will turn up. Edwardx (talk) 11:49, 13 June 2014 (UTC)
- All the sources for "Great British Meal" refer to Hopkinson and Bareham. So, I'll try to deal with that in the lead. Edwardx (talk) 11:56, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

- DYK that Buck's Club, in London's Clifford Street, was the model for The Drones Club in the stories of P.G. Wodehouse?
- DYK that the Buck's Fizz was invented at Buck's Club in London's Clifford Street? Philafrenzy (talk) 00:27, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- Great stuff. I've added more (some a bit trivial). Both good hook ideas. 2100 characters, so long enough. I've added it to my DYK nom to do list, but there are three noms to do today alone. Edwardx (talk) 12:14, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. Skip it if it is too much but I can't imagine getting the invention of the Bucks Fizz on the front page again, though Clifford Street is probably not the mostly likely click-through from there. Sadly the Wodehouse one is probably the weaker of the two. Philafrenzy (talk) 12:49, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- Didn't know Buck's Fizz (drink or pop group?) had been on the front page. Maybe we could add the probable Sidecar to the hook too? Agree that it is likely a more click-worthy hook than Wodehouse. Edwardx (talk) 13:01, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

- It needs a ref at the end of that sentence, based on prior experience. Philafrenzy (talk) 15:01, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- 5 days is now 7 days for DYK noms, so the pressure is off. But I'll still do at least one today. How about "...the Great British Meal of prawn cocktail, steak and Black Forest gâteau is claimed to be the UK's most popular meal out of the 1980s?" Edwardx (talk) 15:46, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, has to include the full courses I think. Philafrenzy (talk) 17:59, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- Or perhaps not. Philafrenzy (talk) 18:02, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- We'll leave it to the reviewer then. I think the cake is the best photo to go with, as we've already had the prawns, and steak and chips seems too generic. No "chips" in the hook to keep it shorter and avoid North Americans confusion. But, you've probably foreseen all of that anyway. Edwardx (talk) 18:06, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- On balance I favour no ingredients and no picture. That makes clicking much harder to resist, particularly since the term Great British Meal is in fact a neologism! Philafrenzy (talk) 18:10, 16 June 2014 (UTC)
- As I've commented on the nom page, it probably won't be the first hook, so no photo anyway. But, first hook always gets more hits, so perhaps we should try for it anyway. Edwardx (talk) 19:34, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello. Would you consider creating an article on the Chiltern Firehouse? See this article, and there must be more. The building is listed, so the article could easily be a start. Also, can you please reply on my talkpage? Much easier to keep track of conversations this way. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 10:02, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- I'm very much an inclusionist, but I'm a bit sceptical about restaurants that haven't been around very long. Having said that, it is the sort of thing that many of our readers would be interested in. And as you rightly say, the building istelf is notable, and I've done plenty of listed building articles, including fire stations. So, I'll do an article about the fire station and create the restaurant as a redirect to it. If that goes well enough, we can think about later creating the restaurant as an article in its own right! Edwardx (talk) 10:30, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- Done. I'll try to add some more later. You're welcome to join in! Edwardx (talk) 11:01, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- It will be interesting to see what the article traffic is like. If high, that could also help to justify a separate article. Edwardx (talk) 11:16, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- I added a bit more, with an infobox. I think two sections may be sufficient, as long as they are fleshed out. Perhaps you could take more pictures if you are in London. Also, it would be good to know when the building stopped being used as a fire station. And who the architect was--do we know his name?Zigzig20s (talk) 11:37, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- The architect was Robert Pearsall. And guess who created that article in December 2013? I think this fire station was already on my mental to do list - thanks for encouraging me! Edwardx (talk) 13:08, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

I created this one from Wikisource text. He sailed to Cape Town avoiding an attack by a French privateer. Is an article created using Wikisource eligible for DYK? (It would need plenty of tidying up first) Philafrenzy (talk) 19:05, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- See Wikipedia:Did_you_know#Eligibility_criteria, 2b) "DYK articles may freely reuse public domain text per Wikipedia's usual policy, with proper attribution. However, because the emphasis at DYK is on new and original content, text copied verbatim from public domain sources, or which closely paraphrases such sources, is excluded both from the 1,500 minimum character count for new articles, and from the x5 expansion count for x5 expanded articles." But, everyone likes pirates, so how much of the article is affected? Edwardx (talk) 20:57, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

- Once you have five or more DYK credits, which I believe you do, you have to review one other nomination for each article you self-nominate. See WP:DYKR for details. None of us really know how to review a nomination before we try. If you do your best and note in your comments that it is the first one that you've reviewed, others should be tolerant of any shortcomings! My advice would be to pick an article about which you have some understanding of the subject matter, you read the language(s) concerned, and where the sources especially for the hook are available free online. If you have any questions just drop a note on my talk page. Edwardx (talk) 21:16, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

- Like the music students outside Knightsbridge tube I saw the other day who jumped straight into the good bits of the Four Seasons. Keep it to three minutes, people will only stand that long before moving on. That is my advice. Philafrenzy (talk) 17:10, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Do you think you could help me with my DYK for Lili Bosse, the current Mayor of BH? An editor suggested she may have lied about being the only daughter of Holocaust survivors, so another reference from The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles. (I wondered if even questioning her on this might be antisemitic?) Now he is trying to question a citation from the BH City website. I will never suggest any more articles for DYK, because this has made it such a waste of time...but I would like to get this article to the front page, to make sure it was not blocked by antisemitism. Since you seem to have some interest in BH, perhaps you can help?Zigzig20s (talk) 15:00, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- It's more to do with needing a secondary source to support anything in a DYK hook. Lili Bosse herself is a primary source. See WP:PRIMARY for more on this. And writing anything that might suggest that another editor could be antisemitic is probably never a good idea! I already have one difficult Israel-related DYK nomination to get back to (see Template:Did you know nominations/One Million Plan, and some discussion above), so I'm very reluctant to wade into another. Having said that, I'm happy with your hook, as long as you can produce a decent secondary source. Edwardx (talk) 00:06, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

A small request
When you're doing things like the London pub articles, can you 1) include {{coord missing|London}} or better still, the coordinates themselves? I'm trying to keep Category:United Kingdom articles missing geocoordinate data as empty as possible, Anomebot automatically inserts {{coord missing|United Kingdom}} but isn't yet clever enough to knock it down to the county level, so someone ends up doing it manually... Also, it's helpful to add a Wikiproject banner and image request (if needed) as it's useful for a Project to claim "ownership" of an article, if only to give bots someone to notify for RFCs, renames and the like - see eg Talk:Duke of Kent, Ealing. Cheers. Le Deluge (talk) 10:07, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you. I used to do this, but I've been forgetting to add them. The English Heritage pages give TQ numbers, so I can enter that data into http://gridreferencefinder.com/# and that yields x and y co-ordinates. I'll endeavour to do add them in future. And I'll try to add stuff to the talkpage too. Edwardx (talk) 11:37, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
Sergent Blandan
I think the statue has his ashes in the base. I don't know how good your French is - mine is as good as a Chinaman who doesn't know any French - but the English article for the Sergent is missing if you are inclined. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:08, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. Lived in France for a while, many years ago, plus an O Level - I'll see what I can do. I've started Dave Goulson today, which I'll get to DYK nom level. As I was doing the article, I realised that he's a third cousin. Small world or something. Edwardx (talk) 13:19, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
- Should be plenty of French Algeria spin-offs from Blandan if that sort of thing interests you. I assume you have reported yourself to the COI notice board on your cousin. If you were a judge you would have to recuse yourself. Philafrenzy (talk) 14:02, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

Pleasure
The 50 DYK Creation and Expansion Medal | ||
Its a pleasure to give you this award on behalf of the DYK project. Some very good contributions and I'm impressed to see your invitations to others to collaborate on your page. I do hope we see more of your efforts and contributions. Thanks from me and the wiki. Victuallers (talk) 22:31, 27 June 2014 (UTC) |
- Thank you kindly. Andrew Davidson included me in a DYK nom, and that drew me deeper into collaborative content creation, so I'm experimenting with extending that idea. DYK is a non-zero-sum game! Edwardx (talk) 23:16, 27 June 2014 (UTC)
The practice of attaching brass name-plates to doors was invented in this street! Philafrenzy (talk) 00:01, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
- Great find. You have a hook, you just need 1500 chars. Good night. Edwardx (talk) 00:02, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
- That's done now, subject to any additions you may have. I think the Crown Estate are doing some big development in the street? Philafrenzy (talk) 17:55, 28 June 2014 (UTC)
- Number 10. Added. I'll see who else is in the street. DYK nom in due course. Edwardx (talk) 14:58, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

Bear grease
Can you get it in Waitrose? Philafrenzy (talk) 12:05, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
- Peter Jones maybe. I'll check when I next visit for MyJohnLewis free coffee and cake, if you'll bear with me... Edwardx (talk) 14:28, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
- I just checked and they had none, which is unbearable, but they did have plenty of prawn cocktails. Apparently, they have received a lot of publicity recently, I can't think why. Philafrenzy (talk) 16:23, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

Would make an excellent antidote to some of the more boring DYKs. Philafrenzy (talk) 22:15, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
- I thought I'd heard of the name. Discussed the Guardian article, and briefly Moiré, with Lois Keidan when we did the LADA editathon. I would agree that Moiré's work is derivative, but she has had press coverage and is notable enough for a DYK. I'll look at it soon. Edwardx (talk) 23:03, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
- Who isn't derivative? Expect it to censored though to "DYK that MM was born in Switzerland?". Philafrenzy (talk) 23:07, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
