Ancestry
Hope you are well and that life is treating you good. Are you still processing these applications? Mine says "No applications were made in last 90 days by the applicant", except that I asked for it to be extended earlier this month when it no longer allowed me to access records. I can search, but cannot "view" any results of a search, thus I assume it has expired (or they've changed access for Mexico, as I recently keep being directed to ancestry.mx, rather than .com)? Can you help or at least point me in a direction? Thanks! SusunW (talk) 17:50, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @SusunW, I'm well, thanks for asking and I hope you are too. Yeah I am, but I fear I'm somewhat in a holding pattern-- I have no more ancestry accounts to assign and we're waiting to hear back from them. Looking at my interface, I don't see your request (for extension) at all, and I'm not sure what's going on with that. I've reached out for some more information and will keep you updated as soon as I hear back. Sorry to not have a more helpful response atm. Eddie891 Talk Work 13:44, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
- Doing well other than that the 2 years of isolation is becoming old. With this Omicron, I'm thinking it'll probably extend into year three. Thanks for your help. You (and everyone else on here) knows I am not technical, but I just pressed the "extend" button when it wouldn't allow me to access info after a search. It was probably 10 days ago. If it's not possible, it isn't. That's life. SusunW (talk) 14:13, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hello Eddie. May I pile on with my own Ancestry issue? I noticed a week or two ago that I too no longer had Ancestry access, though my account works. I clicked on "extend." At that time I decided to change my password, and guess what? I lost my new password! I cannot get access because Ancestry does not have my email address. So that's where that stands, two issues, one a stupid one of my own creation and the other being the "not able to extend" issue that was noted by others. I can email you further particulars if you need them. Figureofnine (talk • contribs) 17:30, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

Autopatrolled granted
Hi Eddie891, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. However, you should consider adding relevant wikiproject talk-page templates, stub-tags and categories to new articles that you create if you aren't already in the habit of doing so, since your articles will no longer be systematically checked by other editors (User:Evad37/rater and User:SD0001/StubSorter.js are useful scripts which can help). Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Barkeep49 (talk) 19:08, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – December 2021
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2021).
- Unregistered editors using the mobile website are now able to receive notices to indicate they have talk page messages. The notice looks similar to what is already present on desktop, and will be displayed on when viewing any page except mainspace and when editing any page. (T284642)
- The limit on the number of emails a user can send per day has been made global instead of per-wiki to help prevent abuse. (T293866)
- Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee Elections is open until 23:59, 06 December 2021 (UTC).
- The already authorized standard discretionary sanctions for all pages relating to the Horn of Africa (defined as including Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and adjoining areas if involved in related disputes), broadly construed, have been made permanent.
Question from TheSteadyState (17:25, 18 December 2021)
Eddie --
First, thanks for being a "mentor." As you probably can tell, I am very new to this. I am a member of a group called "The Steady State," and am hoping to create and maintain the entry for the group. We are a group of politically active former senior national security officials (US), who have (sadly) felt it necessary to get involved in politics. You can read a bit about us at https://thesteadystate.org/ --TheSteadyState (talk) 17:25, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled
A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

RFA 2021 Completed
The 2021 re-examination of RFA has been completed. 23 (plus 2 variants) ideas were proposed. Over 200 editors participated in this final phase. Three changes gained consensus and two proposals were identified by the closers as having the potential to gain consensus with some further discussion and iteration. Thanks to all who helped to close the discussion, and in particular Primefac, Lee Vilenski, and Ymblanter for closing the most difficult conversations and for TonyBallioni for closing the review of one of the closes.
The following proposals gained consensus and have all been implemented:
- Revision of standard question 1 to
Why are you interested in becoming an administrator?
Special thanks to xaosflux for help with implementation. - A new process, Administrative Action Review (XRV) designed to review if an editor's specific use of an advanced permission, including the admin tools, is consistent with policy in a process similar to that of deletion review and move review. Thanks to all the editors who contributed (and are continuing to contribute) to the discussion of how to implement this proposal.
- Removal of autopatrol from the administrator's toolkit. Special thanks to Wugapodes and Seddon for their help with implementation.
The following proposals were identified by the closers as having the potential to gain consensus with some further discussion and iteration:
- An option for people to run for temporary adminship (proposal, discussion, & close)
- An optional election process (proposal & discussion and close review & re-close)
Editors who wish to discuss these ideas or other ideas on how to try to address any of the six issues identified during phase 1 for which no proposal gained are encouraged to do so at RFA's talk page or an appropriate village pump.
A final and huge thanks all those who participated in this effort to improve our RFA process over the last 4 months.
This is the final update with no further talk page messages planned.

Administrators' newsletter – January 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2021).
Interface administrator changes
|
|
- Following consensus at the 2021 RfA review, the autopatrolled user right has been removed from the administrators user group; admins can grant themselves the autopatrolled permission if they wish to remain autopatrolled.
- Additionally, consensus for proposal 6C of the 2021 RfA review has led to the creation of an administrative action review process. The purpose of this process will be to review individual administrator actions and individual actions taken by users holding advanced permissions.
- Following the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Cabayi, Donald Albury, Enterprisey, Izno, Opabinia regalis, Worm That Turned, Wugapodes.
- The functionaries email list (functionaries-enlists.wikimedia.org) will no longer accept incoming emails apart from those sent by list members and WMF staff. Private concerns, apart from those requiring oversight, should be directly sent to the Arbitration Committee.
How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Welcome to the 2022 WikiCup!
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2022 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page. Any questions on the rules or on anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 14:36, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
DYK for St. James AME Zion Church (Ithaca, New York)
On 15 January 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article St. James AME Zion Church (Ithaca, New York), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/St. James AME Zion Church (Ithaca, New York). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, St. James AME Zion Church (Ithaca, New York)), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Good article nominations graph
Hey there Eddie, I just dug up your helpful graph of the number of good article nominations, and enjoyed taking a second look. Any chance you'd be interested in updating it and reposting it to the GAN talk page? I get the sense that the number of outstanding nominations has declined over the last year, but it would be nice to have some numbers to back it up. Cheers, --Usernameunique (talk) 06:45, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Usernameunique, happy to! updated to 1 Jan. The graph is getting pretty long, I might create one from like 2018 to present in addition for easier viewing. Eddie891 Talk Work 14:37, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
- Also, could I bother you to have a second look at Pompey stone? Please don't feel obligated, however. No worries if not Eddie891 Talk Work 16:09, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
- Many thanks, Eddie. It's very cool to see; trending downwards for sure, and hopefully soon enough we can get it below 200 unreviewed nominations for the first time in nearly a decade (although it sure got close in 2020).
- Separately, you'll see I finally got back to Pompey stone. Again, sorry for the delay. It looks to be in great shape. --Usernameunique (talk) 07:22, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

citation template
What is the citation template, and why does it make a difference whether I use it or I list books more straightforwardly? When I see books listed in the citation template form, I don't know how to link their authors to their Wikipedia entries.Maurice Magnus (talk) 22:23, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Maurice Magnus, first of all, thanks a lot for your efforts cleaning up these citations! The main benefit of using a citation template is that it exports citations in a consistent form. This article also uses {{sfn}} citations, which provide a direct link to the full reference so users can easily find them in the bibliography. Without the citation templates, this doesn't work. while there is no requirement to use the templates, wikipedia guidelines suggest being consistent within an article. For an explanation of what templates are, I'd suggest giving this page a read-through.To link to an author's article, simply add the code
|author-link=the article you want to link to
to the citation template. For instance, the template for Epstein's Lincoln and Whitman without an author link looks like{{Cite book|last=Epstein|first=Daniel Mark|title=Lincoln and Whitman: Parallel Lives in Civil War Washington|date=2004|publisher=Ballantine Books|isbn=0-345-45799-4|edition=1st|location=New York|pages=|oclc=52980509}}
, generating: Epstein, Daniel Mark (2004). Lincoln and Whitman: Parallel Lives in Civil War Washington (1st ed.). New York: Ballantine Books. ISBN 0-345-45799-4. OCLC 52980509. Add the code in like so:{{Cite book|last=Epstein|first=Daniel Mark|author-link=Daniel Mark Epstein|title=Lincoln and Whitman: Parallel Lives in Civil War Washington|date=2004|publisher=Ballantine Books|isbn=0-345-45799-4|edition=1st|location=New York|pages=|oclc=52980509}}
and you get Epstein, Daniel Mark (2004). Lincoln and Whitman: Parallel Lives in Civil War Washington (1st ed.). New York: Ballantine Books. ISBN 0-345-45799-4. OCLC 52980509.Does that help at all? Eddie891 Talk Work 02:19, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

AFD with exernal content
Hi Eddie891,
Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pyranol makes multiple references to a previous discussion on the article's talkpage. With consensus-close as "delete", we no longer have that talkpage. Would it be reasonable to copy–paste it into a box on the AFD so the discussion is actually accessible? I think it contains some important comments that are more widely applicable to notability and reference-searching for chemicals articles. DMacks (talk) 16:55, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, I intended to follow up on that after closing but was called away from the laptop rather unexpectedly. Apologies for that. Would you prefer the content be hist-merged, simply copied and pasted? Would you like the text on the afd page or talk page? Something else? Apologies, I’m not sure which would be best here. Eddie891 Talk Work 22:10, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
- I think it should be copy-pasted not hist-merged, because it was all before the AFD not merely mis-placed AFD content. The article/talk is referenced from a wikiproject notice, so it might be confusing if it got "actually moved" somewhere else. I weakly lean towards placing it on the AFD page rather than the AFD-talk, because to me it seems like it is first-class AFD-discussion material rather than discussion about the AFD (again, it pre-dates it), but that also depends how you as closer feel the article-talk content elates. DMacks (talk) 02:58, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
- I agree, copy-paste is better. I'm in favour of putting it on the AFD page rather than talk, but boxed with {{divbox}} or delimited in some other way to show it was not part of the substantive AFD. SpinningSpark 07:26, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

I've just noticed DMacks suggestion that the discussion on the talk page of the deleted article should be imported into the AFD discussion. I think that is a good idea to preserve the history of the discussion. The comment was addressed to "closing admin", ie you. SpinningSpark 19:33, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

Question from SpreeEg (20:21, 26 January 2022)
Hello, I want to list our business on Wikipedia, how/can I do that? --SpreeEg (talk) 20:21, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, @SpreeEg, articles on companies must meet Wikipedia's general notability guideline, meaning that it has been the subject of substantial coverage in independent, reliable sources. I'd recommend having a read of the guidelines I just linked for more context. Corporations are specifically held to a higher notability guideline, readable at WP:NCORP, one of the main aspects of which requires that the coverage go beyond routine reporting and local reporting. If your company meets those criteria, it is eligible for an article. However, you should not be the person writing this article. having a conflict of interest must be disclosed (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#howtodisclose for how to do so) and having a close connection renders the author largely incapable of writing from Wikipedia's neutral point of view. I would suggest giving our plain and simple conflict of interest guide a thorough read for some more context. Hopefully this is helpful. Don't hesitate to let me know if you have any further questions. Eddie891 Talk Work 01:15, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
Question from Jupiter88888888 (00:54, 27 January 2022)
Why are other wikipedia pages not acceptable for citing? --Jupiter88888888 (talk) 00:54, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- Good question, @Jupiter88888888! You are correct that we do not consider Wikipedia to be a reliable source. This is not against Wikipedia, per se, but because Wikipedia is written by (largely) anonymous users, meaning that it is prone to errors and vandalism. We even have an article that lists such mistakes. If something is true, there should be a reliable source attesting to that, meaning that it will never be necessary to cite Wikipedia. Cheers, Eddie891 Talk Work 01:18, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

- Krishnajannu69, such articles are created in great numbers and are almost without exception deleted here. I recommend that you ask at Wikipedia:Teahouse to find out what the prospects are for your content. It's often possible to work on this content in draftspace, but I'm not sure that that is a good course of action for you to take. — Charles Stewart (talk) 15:27, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello how do I make a Wikipedia about someone --Roblox Detective (talk) 04:46, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, @Roblox Detective. I'd recommend reading this page, which offers a pretty understandable summary. Basically, the subject must meet Wikipedia's notability requirements, be written in line with our core policies, and cited to reliable sources. If you're asking about the technicalities of article writing, you can create an article through the article wizard. Hopefully this is helpful. Let me know if you have any further questions. WikiCup 2022 March newsletter
And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:
- Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
- AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
- Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
- GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
- Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
- SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
- Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.
These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.
Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! WikiCup 2022 May newsletter
The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.
Our top scorers in round 2 were:
- Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
- AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
- Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
- Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
- Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
- Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
- Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.
The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Question from Thabomsampha on Wikipedia:IRC help disclaimer (07:41, 22 March 2022)
Hello, I am trying to make an article for one of my companies artists to get verified. I've seen artists of similar google presence get articles accepted. I would like to know what it is I can do to get this article improved and accepted --Thabomsampha (talk) 07:41, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Thabomsampha, the first thing to know is that conflict of interest editing is rather discouraged and if you do decide to engage in such there are some specific guidelines it's worth remembering to follow (I'd suggest reading this guide), namely that you must be transparent about your editing. For an article to exist on a subject, it should meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines, meaning that the subject has been the subject of multiple, in depth independent and reliable articles. google hits alone is not sufficient to indicate notability. To create an article, as a coi editor, you should go through the articles for creation process. Hopefully that's helpful. Eddie891 Talk Work 13:01, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

- Following a discussion on the bureaucrat's noticeboard, a change has been made to the bureaucrats inactivity policy.
- The ability to undelete the associated talk page when undeleting a page has been added. This was the 11th wish of the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey.
- A public status system for WMF wikis has been created. It is located at https://www.wikimediastatus.net/ and is hosted separately to WMF wikis so in the case of an outage it will remain viewable.
- Remedy 2 of the St Christopher case has been rescinded following a motion. The remedy previously authorised administrators to place a ban on single-purpose accounts who were disruptively editing on the article St Christopher Iba Mar Diop College of Medicine or related pages from those pages.

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022
Hello Eddie891,
At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.
Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.
In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 804 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 852 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.
This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.
If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

- Several areas of improvement collated from community member votes have been identified in the Universal Code of Conduct Enforcement guidelines. The areas of improvement have been sent back for review and you are invited to provide input on these areas.
- Administrators using the mobile web interface can now access Special:Block directly from user pages. (T307341)
- The IP Info feature has been deployed to all wikis as a Beta Feature. Any autoconfirmed user may enable the feature using the "IP info" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features. Autoconfirmed users will be able to access basic information about an IP address that includes the country and connection method. Those with advanced privileges (admin, bureaucrat, checkuser) will have access to extra information that includes the Internet Service Provider and more specific location.
- Remedy 2 of the Rachel Marsden case has been rescinded following a motion. The remedy previously authorised administrators to delete or reduce to a stub, together with their talk pages, articles related to Rachel Marsden when they violate Wikipedia's biographies of living persons policy.
- An arbitration case regarding WikiProject Tropical Cyclones has been closed.
Cecilie Fløe
Hi Eddie891 - please would you consider restoring Cecilie Fløe to my userspace? The deletion in August (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Cecilie Fløe) was apparently on the basis of her not having played for her national team and not meeting NFOOTBALL. But she has now played for her national team and NFOOTBALL has been deprecated. With new coverage I am confident that I can improve the article to a standard where WP:GNG is met. Thanks, Bring back Daz Sampson (talk) 13:22, 5 June 2022 (UTC)
Matador Network
Hello Eddie891, my name is Nickolaus Hines, and I'm the new managing editor at Matador Network. I'm sorry to see that there was some bad sourcing and promotion done in the past that led to you recommending the Wikipedia page be deleted (Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Matador_Network). I'd like to revisit the page deletion and see if there's a way to have a Wikipedia page that has proper sourcing? I'm not aware of how or why the link spamming was done in the past, but I believe the publication has enough influence in the travel industry and as a resource for travelers and creators that a Wikipedia page is warranted. I'm including a few authoritative sources talking about the site below, and I'm happy to discuss this further or provide more information.

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022
Hello Eddie891,
- Backlog status
At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.
Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]
In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).
While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).
- Backlog drive
A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.
- TIP – New school articles
Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.
- Misc
There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}
, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:
Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 12058 articles, as of 22:00, 10 November 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot
There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.
- Reminders
- Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
- If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing
{{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page. - If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. WikiCup 2022 July newsletter
The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:
- BennyOnTheLoose, with 746 points, a tally built both on snooker and other sports topics, and on more general subjects.
- Bloom6132, with 683 points, garnered mostly from "In the news" items and related DYKs.
- Sammi Brie, with 527, from a variety of submissions related to radio and television stations.
Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article nomination, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022
Hello Eddie891,
- Backlog status
After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.
Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.
- Coordination
- MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
- Open letter to the WMF
- The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
- TIP - Reviewing by subject
- Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
- New reviewers
- The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.
- Reminders
- Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
- If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing
{{subst:NPR invite}}
on their talk page. - If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. WikiCup 2022 September newsletter
The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.
At this stage, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For the remaining competitors, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and importantly, before the deadline on October 31st!
If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. The judges are Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Memoirs
I've added the main passage from Decision in the West to your draft. There's a couple others I remember reading in there, but I'm about 400 pages into the 572 page book, and there's just no way I'm going to find the other specific passages. I've skimmed parts of the Castel '94 article, and it appears to cover pretty much what I remember Castel's longer book covering. Hog Farm Talk 01:54, 25 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, Hog Farm looks great! I will endeavor to get through the sources I've accumulated during this week and get the article mainspaced. I just found and checked out The Generals' Civil War: What Their Memoirs Can Teach Us Today [1] which looks promising. I'm trying to figure out whether it's worth including every single general he critiqued and innacurate retelling of events the secondary sources mention -- there are a lot, so probably not, but it's a question then of where to draw the line. Thank you for improving articles in September! Administrators' newsletter – October 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2022).
- Following an RfC, consensus was found that if the rationale for a block depends on information that is not available to all administrators, that information should be sent to the Arbitration Committee, a checkuser or an oversighter for action (as applicable, per ArbCom's recent updated guidance) instead of the administrator making the block.
- Following an RfC, consensus has been found that, in the context of politics and science, the reliability of FoxNews.com is unclear and that additional considerations apply to its use.
- Community comment on the revised Universal Code of Conduct enforcement guidelines is requested until 8 October.
- The Articles for creation helper script now automatically recognises administrator accounts which means your name does not need to be listed at WP:AFCP to help out. If you wish to help out at AFC, enable AFCH by navigating to Preferences → Gadgets and checking the "Yet Another AfC Helper Script" box.
- Remedy 8.1 of the Muhammad images case will be rescinded 1 November following a motion.
- A modification to the deletion RfC remedy in the Conduct in deletion-related editing case has been made to reaffirm the independence of the RfC and allow the moderators to split the RfC in two.
- The second phase of the 2021-22 Discretionary Sanctions Review closes 3 October.
- An administrator's account was recently compromised. Administrators are encouraged to check that their passwords are secure, and reminded that ArbCom reserves the right to not restore adminship in cases of poor account security. You can also use two-factor authentication (2FA) to provide an extra level of security.
- Self-nominations for the electoral commission for the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections open 2 October and close 8 October.
- You are invited to comment on candidates in the 2022 CUOS appointments process.
- An RfC is open to discuss whether to make Vector 2022 the default skin on desktop.
- Tech tip: You can do a fuzzy search of all deleted page titles at Special:Undelete.
Thoughts?
Was perusing Category:American Civil War stubs and came across Wyoming in the American Civil War. Given that Wyoming didn't exist even in territory form at the time of the war, and given the fact that anything that happened in that region was really the Indian Wars, not the Civil War, I'm convinced this should exist. Any thoughts? Also dubious about USS Watauga, although that's a bit more specialist Hog Farm Talk 02:55, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Hog Farm, I'm inclined to agree. Certainly not in the form it currently is-- the prose that just doesn't make sense and there isn't room to expand it into a real article. While the DAB page it was originally created as is slightly more defensible, it still doesn't seem to me to make sense, because as you say, Wyoming wasn't even a territory. We wouldn't, for instance, have West Virginia in the American Revolution... Eddie891 Talk Work 13:26, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
- I don't have quite the same knowledge on Naval articles, but it would seem to me that there just isn't enough about that ship to write a substantive article. Eddie891 Talk Work 14:04, 1 October 2022 (UTC)

North Sea Gas (Band)
Hi,
Why would you delete the North Sea Gas (Band) article? They’re a popular Scottish folk music band, still touring the U.K. and Europe. SergeyDC80 (talk) 10:32, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, @SergeyDC80, the article was deleted as a result of the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/North Sea Gas (band), where users felt it did not meet the general notability guideline or the band notability threshold. For a topic to be notable enough for an article, it must have received significant coverage in independent, reliable sources, which the !voters felt that this band had not. If this still doesn't make sense, I'd suggest having a read of Wikipedia:Introduction to deletion process. If you feel there is information that was not raised in the discussion that would justify recreation of the page, let me know or file a deletion review request. AFD Dheeraj Jindal
The sockpuppets were used to influence the AfD's [2] outcome. How could we remedy the situation and give the now-deleted article a fair chance? RPSkokie (talk) 03:59, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
- @RPSkokie the simplest option would be if you would like to request so, I can restore the article and re-nominate the article for deletion as a procedural action. Would that work? Eddie891 Talk Work 01:28, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
