ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, AugusteBlanqui. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
• updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Edit warring

Your recent editing history at Brian Martin (social scientist) shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home

Hi, Auguste. Your perspective would be welcome at the Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home article, which I've been working on again of late. Part of the problem with the article is the timeline - the 2012 HSE reports (mostly on child trafficking), which were largely ignored by the media and therefore have relatively few sources; and the subsequent furore over the mass grave. I've been trying to more accurately reflect the WP:BESTSOURCES (with a small but vocal opposition) but other eyes, especially from a historian, would be welcome. Hello, AugusteBlanqui. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 2 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

AB, the ip editor I reverted is a prolific sock. Please see the SPI associated with HughD's account. The sock has used a number of Chicago area IP addresses and one of the two addresses in question today was used previously. Per EVADE we can remove the edits. Just to clarify, the "citation" column of the table contains a direct link to the decision of each case (unless it is a so-called "unreported" case--then there is no link). AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

Very good work, & a few fine points.

1. Marine Ecosystem Assessment for the Southern Ocean] was promotional when you approved--check the wording of the MEASO 2018 section, especially the third paragraph. The rest of it also is worded as an organizational handout. I would have declined, but since it's an appropriate subject for an article, I've just fixed it.
2. at DraftMultiphoton microscopy, you asked in a comment " Is there an easy way to clean up the reflist so that the citations are in-text? " There is no easy way--the refs have to be individually checked or guessed at-- to see where they go. . But there's something more basic, and the AFCH picked it up: there is extensive overlap with the much more sophisticated articles Second-harmonic imaging microscopy and Two-photon excitation microscopy. When there's this much overlap, we decline, and I did so.This will need cleaning up by an expert, & I've notified one.
3. Robert D. Mckenzie was OK, but there were so many errors in the writing that I would normally fix it & normalize it either before or after accepting it, since academic faculty is my special field --though I do not think most reviewers do that (if it was from a class, it should have been checked further before being submitted) . (I took care of the problems)
4. Alaska Native Industries Cooperative Association had one of the grammar errors I try to do something about : "..supply issues caused by World War II would cause federal officials in the Bureau of Indian Affairs to conclude ..." is not idiomatic--it should be caused, not would cause, & the error is present throughout the article. I decided to just tag it.

New Page Review newsletter December 2019

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources

• There is an ongoing discussion around changing notifications for new editors who attempt to write articles.
• A recent discussion of whether Michelin starred restraunts are notable was archived without closure.
• A resource page with links pertinent for reviewers was created this month.
• A proposal to increase the scope of G5 was withdrawn.

Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

Dominic Ondoro in the state of Minnesota (USA)

Greetings, AugusteBlanqui! Thanks for your careful watch of the Minnesota page. I added Ondoro to the watch of Minnesota because he holds two major marathon course records—both the marathons are in the state of Minnesota. He has also had unheralded domination of the largest marathon in the state. It makes him somewhat of a state hero, in the way that Dick Beardsley and Phil Coppess have been. He is African, of course, but the state also has a large African diaspora too, which could make this even more relevant. I take the view that Ondoro is similar to other professional athletes who are from different countries, but play in the state for only two or three months and then go back home. Irish Supreme Court Case Articles

(copied from my post at the new article curation / review page) I sort of alternate, looking for "easier" (= compliant and well written) articles in newer feeds and then taking on the tougher older open ones. I ran across some of the articles that you noted while doing the former. What a great contribution to Wikipedia! Well written articles, on encyclopedic topics that need coverage in Wikipedia. My only "yellow alert" during reviewing was that they looked TOO well written and so I did a lot a checking for copied text.......in essence that the quotes from sources were identified as quotes. Hello AugusteBlanqui, since you were the second editor to decline this article, could you please review the article again (although it was declined again today - I was hoping it would pass this time, with the great work by Fylindfotberserk on adding more reliable sources). Generally, I have seen many articles with one or more reliable sources passed to the main space, but I am unsure how this page which has at least four reliable sources fail. Hello @Tolly4bolly:, the best strategy is to look at this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(films) especially the section "Other evidence of notability." I actually think you are close--the film appears to have been so bad that it has attracted news coverage. I would try to find a few other sources that slate it and then add something to the lead like, "the film provoked widespread criticism and condemnation." Add a section developing the defense the director makes. If you make these few small changes let me know and I'll take a look at it! AugusteBlanqui (talk) 16:19, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks@Mccapra:, I will request the permission but I'm not sure I actually create enough articles to get it. The Supreme Court articles have been a year-long project involving other people. ok I’ll leave it with you. The critical thing isn’t so much volume as reliability. The care you take with the articles you bring into mainspace is the thing that made me suggest it. They’re all well thought through, properly sourced, well linked etc. and if the community can be confident that all your articles will be like that, it doesn’t matter if you only create one a year. Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

A passage that is a direct quote from a source (regardless of its copyright) with a footnote should be distinguishable from a passage that is a paraphrase with a footnote. Hi @AugusteBlanqui:, thanks for making that change! But no, it's not the case that direct text needs to be quoted in all cases, no matter what. Wikipedia itself was started by wholesale copy and paste of encyclopediae in the public domain. This article is the repurposing of something that is itself a tertiary source -- a biographical article in an archival guide. It doesn't need to be paraphrased or quoted. New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. About two years ago, students in one of your classes worked to update Indigenous American philosophy. Unfortunately, I think through a combination of poor sourcing and WP:SYNTHetic original research, the article in my estimation turned out rather poorly and likely should not be hosted by Wikipedia. New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

WP:AFC Helper News

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

• AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
• The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. I realize you may have self-doubt about based on Uyghur genocide, and you made the right decision there with A, but if you are going to revert your closes on topics relating to fascism and genocide then you should avoid these topics from the start. My intention was not to self-revert on either. I believe I made the wrong decision at the Uyghur genocide one. This Franco one is tough, I think we can both agree the sources you provided in my talk are beneficial and needed to be in the discussion.
