Comment/question: Is it possible to make BracketBot ignore articles marked {{inuse}} or {{underconstruction}}? The bot's habit of disrupting my work in progress is as distracting as the {{inuse}} and {{underconstruction}} tags I just entered. Especially when it pops in in mid-session when I am editing. Georgejdorner (talk) 07:39, 7 October 2013 (UTC)
- On the other hand you are immediately notified of typos or such. If the bot ignored edits made to such articles, it would not return to detect mistakes when the {{inuse}} tag is removed. Huon (talk) 18:16, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Comment/question: It left the note the middle of my talk page, making it difficult and/or unlikely to find. Probably was looking for the "October 2013" section. The first comment appeared to be a superfluous ')' but was rather cryptic as it just listed ").". A better hint on that would be appreciated. Thanks for maintaining BracketBot. Cheers Jim1138 (talk)
Jim1138 (talk) 17:36, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
- Indeed the bot will use a previously existing section instead of creating a new one. That was a deliberate decision. Regarding the cryptic hint, that was the entire line. The only way to make that hint less cryptic would be to give the preceding and/or following lines as well, which would make the vast majority of BracketBot messages unnecessarily long. So I'd say the occasional cryptic message (here unfortunately an issue that wasn't even based on your own edit) is an acceptable trade-off. Huon (talk) 23:03, 31 October 2013 (UTC)

Secondly, the template will automatically update the age after her birthday. There's absolutely no need to try and manually fix the age. Also, you should use the preview to check whether your edit has the desired effect before you save it, especially when you modify templates you don't fully understand. - You forgot a few brackets for some of the external links, but don't worry; we don't block people for mistakes. I have fixed the issue and made some other changes to the article. In particular I removed the table of interviews (those surely are not what Rao is notable for, nor did the interviews themselves seem to be the subject of third-party coverage. I also switched the "references" and "external links" headlines. References are supposed to be reliable sources that serve to verify the article's content, such as newspaper articles about Rao. External links are links that don't satisfy our standards for reliable sources but may still be helpful for our readers, such as a link to an official website. We shouldn't add too many of those or it will look like linkspam; we're here to provide information, not to promote Rao's works. Thus I have removed most of the external links. {{List of St. Louis Cardinals coaches ry The matter of your inquiry is unclear.
Your bot identified botself as Referencebot, but I believe it malfunctioned in an identity self-check script and its true nomenclature is FalsePositivebot. As an aside, I noted the notice. However, in the case that my Americanized English does not strike your fancy, I can switch to Spanish English (not the same as Spanglish or Espanglés, thank you), a form of what is now known as Castellano that the court Communications official of Ferdinand I of León and Castile promulgated. Adíos!
Elcid.ruderico (talk) 05:25, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
- Your snark would be a lot more impressive if you had not, in fact, broken the references by removing the p.277 and p.278 versions of Broeg. That caused large red error messages along the lines of "Cite error: The named reference Broeg_1998:_278 was invoked but never defined (see the help page)." Compare for example this version's references section. Fixed. Huon (talk) 12:27, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you for your corrections, but they were unnecessary. I have a method to building the list, even if it is producing red error messages. And frankly, they really don't have to be such an eyesore. I am building the list alphabetically, because that is how the Broeg book has the individuals listed – except where I have may found them elsewhere. On a side note, my response – combined with the misapplied tags – were simply out of amusement to the message that is on your edit page. So it was not actually meant to offend, or for "snark," as that tends to be unamusing rhetoric, stuffy, overly-PC and simply the veiled ethos of people who try too hard to be right. Again, thanks for your help. Hasta luego! --Elcid.ruderico (talk) 15:56, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

I am former Somali non commissioned officer, worked for office of archives and military history. I made few corrections on the ranks of people in the last section. I corrected bad on 1977 rank list and added names that were left out. It is too difficult to list all names of colonels and majors for all 5-divisions on 1977
General Samatar was the most senior and high ranking
- Indeed it's too difficult to list every officer; thus the table is supposed to hold only notable entries, which usually means "people who have an article of their own". Keshetsven (talk) 02:27, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikipedia, then! I'm not sure what kind of help you're looking for. Since this is the English Wikipedia and few of our readers will be able to read Romanian, quotes in Romanian won't be all that helpful. Sources in Romanian are acceptable, though; you can either use citation templates such as {{cite news}} which have "language=" and "trans_title=" parameters for the original language and an English translation of the title, or you can use the {{ro icon}} template with an external link to produce (in Romanian). - Firstly, I fail to see why there needs to be an opening parenthesis without a corresponding closing parenthesis. Secondly, you cited no reliable sources for the content you added. Particularly the information about regulation would require such a source so our readers can verify it, but the primary source on the consortium didn't say what you cited it for, either. For this second reason I have reverted your edits. Huon (talk) 19:58, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Comment/question: This page is about a communications protocol called 'Sat>IP'. Although the page title cannot reflect this (and is called Sat-IP), throughout the page the term, Sat>IP is used and this has triggered BracketBot in about 45 instances! In this page, the '>' symbol is not being used as a bracket so if there is some way to exclude the term Sat>IP or the Sat-IP page from detection of '<>' syntax errors by BracketBot, that would be useful in the future. Thanks Satbuff (talk) 15:33, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
- A situation like this might need a permanent tag in the article. As it stands, an editor can avoid BracketBot's attention by including a "!nobot!" in the edit summary, but that only works once. If a subsequent editor changes anything and thus triggers a BracketBot visit, then the 45 instances will recur. Could you code something similar to the "NoBracketBot" command for editors, but to be used in an article? — Molly-in-md (talk) 16:14, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
- Just looked at the code again, and found that I could add it in easily, contrary to what I thought earlier. Inserting {{NoBracketBot}} into an article should make BracketBot ignore it. Feel free to test. 930913(Congratulate) 19:08, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

One day at a time, please?
In October, Bracketbot picked up two mistakes I'd made - one on the 12th, one on the 29th. I'd have found it much clearer if it had listed the second one at the bottom of my talk page, with its own heading, rather than under "October 2013", created 17 days earlier, since when I'd had several other messages. I got a notification that I'd got a talk page message, then had to dig around to find it. The disambiguation bot gives its messages heading like "Disambiguation link notification for November 1", which is much clearer.
I can see the value in putting various "User warning" templates under the heading for a month, to group them together - but presumably Bracketbot AGFs and is generally picking up typos (I have a bad habit of taking finger off shift key too soon or too late and producing "[{" etc), so its helpful messages are informative and advisory rather than warnings, and would be more appropriately put at the bottom of the user's talk page.
If there are reasons why it's better for them to be at the monthly heading, could you provide an option for those of us who'd rather see them at the bottom of the page? Thanks.
That said, I think it's a very useful bot and am always happy to go and fix the things it tells me to fix! Well done for providing this useful aid for sloppy typists who don't always remember to use "Show Preview"! PamD 22:51, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

I worked on the film Big Stone Gap and have been instructed to create pages for the principal cast members that don't have one. I started with Erika Coleman because I felt she is the only one that has a substantial body of work in order to be considered "notable". She just wrapped a major picture with a principal role of Pearl Grimes with Whoopi Goldberg, Ashley Judd and Patrick Wilson.
I uploaded the wrong image. I have uploaded the correct image that I personally took on set but it went into a "commons" page. It is the image of Erika Coleman in a blue shirt against a brick wall. I personally took the photo on set.
This is not a promotional page. This is because Erika has a body of work that is substantial. I cannot say that about the others.
I sincerely appreciate any assistance. Thank you, Nancy

After independence the reconnection of state hood demand with Santali Language was done by JMM after its birth since 1972 by Socialist & Culturist late Dhanai Kisku from the "Sido-Kanhu Bejha Tung" which was started since 1964 from his village Kerwa, Goddah, So I want more details please. - The bot's purpose is to point out mismatched brackets so a human can fix them. In your edit you added an opening parenthesis but no corresponding closing parenthesis. I fixed that and tidied up theee references in the process.
- On an entirely unrelated note, the article needs some heavy copyediting. The grammar is somewhere between "atrocious" and "incomprehensible". Huon (talk) 00:04, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

- The parentheses, yes, though it seems a rather uncommon template and I doubt it's worth modifying the bot to avoid these false positives. The square brackets, however, were indeed mismatched. Fixed. Huon (talk) 20:12, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

The title field in a cite, which is effectively a quotation from a source, prob shouldn't trigger the bot. dissolvetalk 19:44, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
- So you're saying it's more likely that a title has mismatched brackets (which should be ignored) than that someone makes a bracket mistake in a title field (which should be pointed out)? I'm not sure about that. Huon (talk) 20:12, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi! I have a notice on my talk page about some brackets for "The City of Mahagonny" (sp.?) on the Harry Everett Smith Page. But I didn't edit that section -- though I did put in a some links elsewhere (further up). Also in the External Resources section (down below). I don't think I wan't to tackle the section on Harry Smith's films. There is a lot of info on him in Peter Goldsmith's bio of Moe Asch that could be added, however, because it is quite interesting, perhaps to the "Anthology of American Folk Song" page on wiki, so as not to give "undue weight."Mballen (talk) 03:48, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- Fixed. I fixed this bracket problem. I suspect that the problem was detected when you fixed one or more problems somewhere in the article, leaving one of the brackets in a lower section unpaired. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:07, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

I assume some basic knowledge of MTM's operation. I work there regularly and check any sites that give our operating dates, hours or information regarding what is our purpose, equipment, etc.
Regarding the MTM Wiki page, I corrected operating dates, part of the equipment roster and checked overall readability of the site. I did some editing on the bus section and updated the Osceola & St Croix side of the house. "plugged" our Dinner Train a mite and gave some further info on that.
I admit that the bracket thing is a bit confusing, especially as they sometimes make no sense to a "civilian" just cleaning something up.
Please feel free to beat me up on the brackets. I'll willingly accept any corrections to make things work well and get it right. Thanks.

Hi Bot, I want to full protect this page. I used syntax as {{pp-meta, but after editing i cant see that the page is protected from editing. Could you please let me know what is wrong in the script or command. Thanks
HarishKumarGupta (talk) 17:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
- I have deleted the article since it gave no indication of why Gupta is notable (and if you are Gupta, you should take a look at our guideline on conflicts of interest; writing an autobiography or editing an article about yourself is strongly discouraged. Turning an article on someone else into an article on you is even worse, though in this case the other person also wasn't notable.
- Regarding the protection template, the {{pp-meta}} template itself does not protect the page. Only admins can protect pages, and we do so only if it's necessary to prevent vandalism - not to freeze a particular version of an article for eternity. The template is only used to add a notification to already-protected pages, and even then it's not meant to be used directly. Huon (talk) 22:29, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
