[edit]The more I think about language, the more it amazes me that people ever understand each other at all. Kurt Gödel.[1]
We strive for truth, we settle for verifiability.
The price of cooperation is effective communication.
Wikipedia is neither straight nor narrow.
Always in the shit. Only the depth varies. Unknown diver
Justice and fairness:
- Justice and fairness are philosophical concepts. When they occur it is due to cooperation of people. They have overlap, but are not the same thing.
- There is no natural justice, but sometimes cause and effect can look that way.
- Coincidence can be mistaken for unfairness or injustice. It can also be mistaken for justice or fairness.
- This does not mean that we should not strive for fairness and justice, but we should not be overly surprised when they do not occur.
- Toleration of intolerance is neither fair nor just.

We have met the enemy, and he is us. Walt Kelly/Pogo
Good faith is no guarantee of good work. Great harm can be done by those who mean well. It is likely that far more harm is done by those who know they are right than by those who think they may be wrong. See also: The road to hell is paved with good intentions, and Dunning–Kruger effect.
The first rule of the Dunning–Kruger club is you don't know you're a member of the Dunning–Kruger club. David Dunning
Life is full of unintended consequences, some were avoidable. Shit happens.
Large language models: Simulated knowledge generators or artificial incompetence? Were they really expecting something better? Connections with reality may be purely coincidental. New tools to provide unreliable information at an unprecedented rate.
Admins should be held to a higher standard of behaviour. So should everyone else.
Judge people by what they do, not by what you think they think.
Labelling other people is dehumanising, labelling oneself is self-identification, expecting other people to understand what one means by a label is unrealistic.
Experience does not necessarily imply competence.
Reality is not obliged to be plausible, so we assess the evidence.
Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.… Winston S Churchill, 11 November 1947
General notice of affiliations, CoI etc
[edit]Diving affiliations and certification: Recreational:CMAS-ISA/SAUU: 4* Diver, Normoxic trimix diver, Gas blender. 3* Instructor back in the 1980s NAUI: Nitrox diver, Semi-closed rebreather diver. Instructor back in the 1980s Commercial/scientific: SADoL Class III commercial diving instructor (not currently employed in this capacity), Other: Southern Underwater Research Group (SURG) for Surveys and Mapping and Diver Education is basically me. It earns me nothing and costs a lot. A bit like Wikipedia, but wetter, and more expensive. Just in case anyone wonders, I am a member of DAN SA in that I use them for travel/diving accident insurance, and I am on friendly speaking terms with a few of the staff and ex staff, and have met some of the research staff of DAN Europe at a workshop. I have written and been part of the team for writing training manuals, policies, assessment tools and standards for diving and diving related skills at agency and national levels, but have never been paid for this work, and have occasionally cited documents that I was involved in creating. I also upload dive records for crowdsourced research, as one of the crowd. I have done voluntary work for some projects run by SANBI as a citizen scientist. I know several staff members, and have provided some of their projects with a large number of free-licenced underwater photographs and other data. No reward beyond lunch at conferences has been provided. I have no connection with the NSRI other than knowing several members through diving, was once on a boat they assisted, and once had a dive interrupted by them because someone on shore thought I might be in difficulty, and they had to check. I know the owner and staff of Wreckless Marine, the work they do aligns with the work I do, without conflict of interest. I sometimes dive with Wreckless Divers. I give advice on editing Wikipedia to people who ask for it. If doing research for someone else would put me significantly out of pocket, I might ask for my costs to be covered. I do not consider this unreasonable, inappropriate, or unethical. |
