NPR Newsletter No.15 16 November 2018

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello 力,

Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
  • Community Wishlist Voting takes place 16 to 30 November for the Page Curation and New Pages Feed improvements, and other software requests. The NPP community is hoping for a good turnout in support of the requests to Santa for the tools we need. This is very important as we have been asking the Foundation for these upgrades for 4 years.
If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.

You recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Fred Bauder. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Fred Bauder/Evidence. Please add your evidence by November 27, 2018, which is when the evidence phase closes. You can also contribute to the case workshop subpage, Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Fred Bauder/Workshop. For a guide to the arbitration process, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Guide to arbitration. For the Arbitration Committee, --Cameron11598 (Talk) 21:11, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

General Sanctions notification - Cryptocurrencies

Please read this notification carefully, it contains important information about an administrative situation on Wikipedia. It does not imply any misconduct regarding your own contributions to date.

A community decision has authorised the use of general sanctions for pages related to the blockchain and cryptocurrencies. The details of these sanctions are described here. All pages that are broadly related to these topics are subject to a one revert per twenty-four hours restriction, as described here.

General sanctions is a system of conduct regulation designed to minimise disruption in controversial topic areas. This means uninvolved administrators can impose sanctions for edits relating to these topics that do not adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, our standards of behaviour, or relevant policies. Administrators may impose sanctions such as editing restrictions, bans, or blocks. An editor can only be sanctioned after he or she has been made aware that general sanctions are in effect. This notification is meant to inform you that sanctions are authorised in these topic areas, which you have been editing. It is only effective if it is logged here. Before continuing to edit pages in these topic areas, please familiarise yourself with the general sanctions system. Don't hesitate to contact me or another editor if you have any questions.

ARBCOM elections

I don't plan to do a "voter guide", but here is an abbreviated one.

Plan to support
  • Drmies, GorillaWarfare, Joe Roe, Courcelles, Mkdw
Plan to vote neutral
  • AGK, SilkTork, Robert McClenon, Fred Bauder, Isarra
Plan to oppose
  • Lourdes - after the drama immediately following her RFA and her comments on other RFAs, I don't have confidence in her ability to fill this role
  • Kelapstick - general concern with a lack of activity/time to commit to the role
  • DGG - 4 years in a row on the committee is enough; take a break

Richard Neal birthplace

You recently reverted my correction in the page for Richard Neal. I am not sure how this was not constructive as it corrected an obvious mistake in the article. I provided a citation to a source that is also used for other statements in the page and reviewed the guidelines on Biographies of Living Persons prior to editing. Could you help me understand how this edit was not constructive? What would be a preferred way to correct this article? Thanks!Ironsides01 (talk) 21:11, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

I didn't revert anything, an IP editor did that [2] before I got to it. I gave you a warning for your change of Trump to Drumpf. As I said in the message Don't change "Trump" to "Drumpf", and make sure that any browser extensions that do this automatically are disabled when editing Wikipedia. That said, He and his two younger sisters were raised in Springfield is sufficient to claim he was "a Springfield native", even if his place of birth was Worcester. power~enwiki (π, ν) 21:23, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for clarifying who did what...I was not aware of a "Drumpf" extension on the browser - I will be sure that is disabled if I am editing using that browser again. Ironsides01 (talk) 20:13, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

@Ironsides01: - You did it again power~enwiki (π, ν) 20:24, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

On the link in your last comment, the only instance of the "D" alteration is the one I typed in deliberately in answer to your previous comment. There are no new changes due to any browser extension, which I made sure was turned off. So, I don't see what you are referring to, sorry. Ironsides01 (talk) 14:33, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

Succession boxes.

Howdy. Though it wasn't your intent, I think there's a chance of getting succession boxes abolished from Wikipedia. Perhaps an Rfc is required. GoodDay (talk) 20:13, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

I've been watching the discussion. Getting rid of all of them seems a bit drastic, but there should be a consensus to get rid of some of the less-useful ones. It may also mean I can stop trying to do Module:US House seniority box if those boxes are removed. power~enwiki (π, ν) 20:18, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

The situation at WP:RSN

A few months ago, Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources/Perennial sources was created. While it has become accepted by the community fairly quickly, it only has implicit consensus to exist. Right now, a variety of discussions regarding how to handle British tabloid newspapers (including the infamous Daily Mail) are ongoing at that noticeboard.

I don't think any of them are currently going to get anywhere. They are trying to solve multiple different problems, all with the symptom of editors over-using British tabloid newspapers as sources. For straight news coverage, other newspapers are generally more reliable sources. For entertainment gossip, we mostly try to keep it out altogether. For sports gossip, likewise.

There are also certain concerns about the accuracy of certain editorial staffs. Wikipedia is a historical undertaking; if the project finds it necessary to determine that the Daily Mail from 2009-2015 had a preponderance of deliberately false stories, it might be worth blacklisting that time period. There's no real way for a community of amateurs to determine that in real-time.

So, I support explicitly revoking the Daily Mail RFC, with the note that very little will change as a result. From a site policy perspective, it is superseded by better ways of handling problematic sources. From the perspective of future editors, they likely should be better educated in the processes of Wikipedia if they try to cite anything to the Daily Mail. power~enwiki (π, ν) 01:39, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

Why revert? (Trying to learn for a college assignment, not trying to be mean!)

I'm trying to learn the ways of Wikipedia for a college assignment. I understand that some people have been on here a long time and thus have more privileges than others. I edited the color yellow and added the RGB code. Almost immediately it was reverted. You commented on your revert stating that it was "Still not an improvement". Why is that not an improvement? I'm trying to understand how new people, can rarely add new stuff without it almost immediately getting reverted? Why is adding a globally know color code, not an improvement? I'm tiring to understand the rhetoric and the hierarchy of Wikipedia, not trying to be disrespectful. Also thanks for the cookies! Inthenameofrhetoric (talk) 02:03, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

The infobox (the thing on the right side of your screen in the normal view, or after the first paragraph in the mobile view) is where the RGB code for yellow is already listed. Repeating that in the first paragraph doesn't improve the article's text. power~enwiki (π, ν) 02:08, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
(and you're welcome to edit anywhere, but other editors are also welcome to revert you! Perhaps the first lesson to learn when editing Wikipedia.) power~enwiki (π, ν) 02:09, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

I understand people being able to revert. But why do some people have the ability to shut down and block users after a few edits? I almost makes it exclusive to people who been here forever and not allowing new people to edit. What’s your thoughts? Inthenameofrhetoric (talk) 02:23, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

If you're doing this for a college assignment, I'd recommend asking your professor a few of these questions. power~enwiki (π, ν) 02:33, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
As a side note, I have removed the AIV report because of your objection. Ifnord (talk) 03:20, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

I'd like to invite editors who participated in the deletion discussion to give their input at article talk. There was considerable interest in cleaning up this article in one way or another, but there have been few responses to my proposal to trim the passenger lists. Alternative proposals are certainly welcome as well; I'm hoping that we can build some sort of consensus for the scope and direction of the article moving forward. Thanks –dlthewave 21:59, 7 December 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018

Hello 力,

Reviewer of the Year

This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.

Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.

See also the list of top 100 reviewers.

Less good news, and an appeal for some help

The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.

Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019

At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.

Training video

Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

I see your issues with the 'Symbols of New England' page. Would you remove your suggestion for deletion if we revert back to your redirect until I can make the necessary changes for sourcing? --Tpwissaa (talk) 18:03, 13 December 2018 (UTC) Tpwissaa

Hi. As (I believe) the admin who entered page protection for the above while it was the "primary month" page in the Deaths project, please could I ask that you revisit in order to remove page protection, which is never kept for any monthly archived pages. The fact that page protection was added due to page moves contrary to consensus should not mean that it is maintained ad infinitum, as each and every archived page is denied that luxury. And, annoyingly, TheMagikBot keeps coming back to add a padlock symbol where none should really be in a scheme of consistently applied rules. Thank you and a Happy New Year. Ref (chew)(do) 17:50, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

I'm not an admin; unless one of the talk-page-stalkers does this you'll need to ask for unprotection at WP:RFPP. power~enwiki (π, ν) 17:59, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
*waves*  Done, not sure actually how that must've gotten protected because when you reverted the move the protection should've gone to Deaths in 2018 and not Deaths in November 2018. Also Refsworldlee there's no point in edit warring with the bot; removing the padlock does not make the protection go away Galobtter (pingó mió) 18:19, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks to you both (I must have misread the edit history, apologies to this page owner!). The page protection was put in place to prevent a one-off issue with one editor who decided to move the page when he had not even discussed it for consensus sake. That protection went on top of the regular anti-vandalism protection which happens every year for the "primary" page. Thanks once again, and I've noted the protocol for the Bot too. Technical issues on vital article list

I have noticed that we have some mistakes at templates and other things on the VA. Mark Twain has template vital article-level 3 although actually he is at the level 4. Geoffrey Chaucer have template vital article-level 4 and he is not listed at the level 3 but at the level 4 he is marked as "level 3". These issues are in other sections at 1-5 levels as well because of people when archive discuss not always mark these things in every level. Hansel and Gretel recently have been have removed while they were not on on the list! If you check archives you find that we removed them two times. First time in 2016 in right way and this year we have started nomination while actually they should not be on the level 4 already. Is this possible to correct these issues by your bot? Cheers. Dawid2009 (talk) 17:12, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

I'll look at this next week once I'm back from vacation. It should be fairly easy for me to fix the level-3 and level-4 talk pages; I don't think all the level-5 ones work correctly with my bot. power~enwiki (π, ν) 23:45, 3 January 2019 (UTC)

Deleting my edit request on Google

@AnthonyLovesWikis: The directions say: This template must be followed by a complete and specific description of the request, that is, specify what text should be removed and a verbatim copy of the text that should replace it. "Please change X" is not acceptable and will be rejected; the request must be of the form "please change X to Y". This means a SHORT SUMMARY of the specific change requested, not pasting the entire article on the talk page twice. power~enwiki (π, ν) 21:31, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

revert at AN/I - taking your word for it

I'll take your word for it that it would work against me, which, if true, is sad. But it kind of makes my point: no matter what I do or say people with a dispute history with me will find a way to interpret it in a negative way against me. Anyway, for the record, I had and still have the option to revert your revert of my friendly proposals, but, for the sake of community peace I'm choosing not to, for what it's worth. I just wish people would do the same with respect to proposals against me. --В²C 21:33, 23 January 2019 (UTC)

If you were proposing one boomerang it might be productive. Proposing 3 (with "not a sanction" language that nobody will take well) is certain to go badly. power~enwiki (π, ν) 21:34, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
I just want people to either engage with me collegially, or ignore me. That's how I try to deal with others. I actually thought proposing such reminders for three different people would be better received than just focusing on one. Frankly, I'd like to see the community support similar reminders for quite a few others. Anyway, I'm not going to pursue this approach any further. Thanks. --В²C 21:53, 23 January 2019 (UTC)

Close of cycling CFD

Hi, I'm a bit surprised at your close of Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2018_November_25#Climbs_in_cycle_racing_in_... (purge any articles that don't have significant content about cycling) as (although, IMO, a step in the right direction) (1) that's not an option that was discussed in the CFD, (2) it leaves the categories in an unusual/unique state (I can't think of any other categories with inclusion criteria about "significant content"), (3) it begs the question of what "significant content" means (e.g. consider Vaalserberg which currently has a small uncited paragraph about cycling or Jaizkibel which currently has more content about hiking than about cycling), (4) what if the section about cycling is split off to a separate article?  Is another CFD requesting either listify+delete or limit to articles specifically about cycle racing the only way to fix this? DexDor (talk) 06:38, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

@DexDor: The nomination said I propose removing the cycle racing cat tag from all the articles that aren't specifically about cycle racing - which is what I attempted to do. While some people supported deleting these categories entirely, I didn't see consensus for that. The French category has a lot of articles like Col du Petit Ballon, which is a road that was on the Tour de France once (so possibly shouldn't be in such a category), but there isn't any other content in that article. If there's a coherent reason to remove those types of articles, I don't see the CFD discussion as preventing that. power~enwiki (π, ν) 19:27, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

A quick clarification, please. In your view, has the closure been implemented already, or is it still a work in progress? If the latter, I would suggest listing the categories at WP:CFD/W/M so that they can be properly purged. I still see a lot of articles about landforms (mountains, hills, mountain passes, etc.) that are being trivially categorized because they happen to be on a cycle racing routing. Thanks, -- Black Falcon (talk) 05:48, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

@Black Falcon: I don't plan to do any more. As mentioned earlier, I don't see a good way to handle articles like Col du Petit Ballon as part of the close - the entirety of the article's content is about cycling up the mountain. power~enwiki (π, ν) 19:01, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
Fair enough, I will add the categories to WP:CFD/W/M. While I see your point about articles like Col du Petit Ballon, there are still many others (e.g. Mount Diablo, Cat and Fiddle Road, Aitana, Sanctuary of Oropa, Mont Ventoux) that are much more clear-cut. -- Black Falcon (talk) 19:53, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

@Marcocapelle: Does XfDCloser not do that? For AfD a "no consensus" close will remove the tags. I can fix it this weekend (I should have a significant block of time to do Wiki stuff this weekend), or else ask someone at AN to clean up. power~enwiki (π, ν) 22:49, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the review. I did not cat the article as "racial hoax" to mean that the event objectively was a hoax, merely that racial hoaxes are a signifint number of sources discussing if it is or is not a hoax, and therefore that cat is relevant. However, if it is "too soon" for that cat, is it not also too soon for the "hate crime" cat, included for the same reasoning? ResultingConstant (talk) 19:19, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

I removed it because the implication seemed to be that it was a hoax, not a possible hoax. It's always hard to deal with current events involving BLPs for these categories; I don't claim to know the perfect approach. power~enwiki (π, ν) 19:25, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

Speedy Deletion of ERA Prometheus

Hi!

It looks like this article nominated for G11 speedy deletion (and subsequently deleted 20 mins later) was made in error as it fails numerous clauses for "Unambiguous advertising or promotion" (G11).

1. "This applies to pages that are exclusively promotional..."

The article as written fails the EXCLUSIVITY stipulation as it discusses and educates readers on (a) the recent democratization of the tourbillon mechanism and (b) the exorbitant market price of the tourbillon mechanism and reasons for it being the case.

2. "The content could plausibly be replaced with text written from a neutral point of view..." I have made numerous edits to further "neutralize" the sentences and was still in this process of doing so. The edit history and activity of the article shows in and of itself that I am not only acting in good faith, but proves the plausibility that some of the content can be replaced with more neutral text.

3. "Any article that describes its subject from a neutral point of view does not qualify for this criterion." Most fundamentally, the claims made by the article are cited and quoted directly from the sources such as from The New York Times, Vogue, and Europa Star. My POV merely echoes these 3rd party and neutral sources.

It seems that "Wikipedia:Deletion guidelines for administrators" wasn't followed. Sadly giving an author no chance to reply to a speedy deletion is exceptionally unwelcoming and does not promote the mission of Wiki, but serves to dissuade future contributions. Please undelete this page and allow me to edit it.

I would like to continue to be a contributing member to the understanding and fair community of Wikipedia.Izazii (talk) 23:07, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

I disagree fully. power~enwiki (π, ν) 23:12, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

I have countered factually where the clauses specifically fail G11 in points 1., 2., and 3.

What specifically do you "disagree with fully?"

I'd like for you to shed light on your thought process for marking said article with the G11 tag by addressing points 1.,2, 3.

Hopefully we can come to an understanding as I seek to gain feedback and will press and escalate this matter until it is clearly communicated and understood.Izazii (talk) 23:36, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

Well:
  1. the recent democratization of the tourbillon mechanism and (b) the exorbitant market price of the tourbillon mechanism is blatant marketing
  2. If you admit the text wasn't neutral, you can't really object too much. If there weren't so many problems, I'd suggest you could request the text be restored to your userspace at WP:REFUND.
  3. I can't check the links now, but based on my recollection, the "3rd party and neutral sources" don't actually talk about the watch. The same problem is found at the article on the company, where they talk about "microbrands" but don't talk about your company at all.
  4. It seems you have a conflict of interest here.
In conclusion - the more you press this, the less support you will get. power~enwiki (π, ν) 23:40, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
  1. There is no blatant marketing. These statements are taken from the NY Times and sources that show prices of the tourbillon mechanism. These statements and descriptions are matters of fact.
  2. The text was an ongoing living document. You can see from the edit history that it was still and continually being refined. There were citations from the NY Times, Vogue, Crunchbase, and multiple blogs. There are article stubs with even less to show for in Wikipedia. Seems like you are specifically singling this article out...
  3. There are multiple 3rd party sources that discuss the watch (Coolector, Kaminsky, LevityBall, Crunchbase) and/or discuss the type of watch it is and the market that it belongs to (New York Times, Bloomberg, Economist, Europa Star).
  4. This isn't my company. But these are my articles and I know about microbrands and ecommerce.

In conclusion: Whether these articles stay or go, isn't the issue here. Wikipedia says to BE BOLD and you're telling me to keep quiet and not to "press this".

I fear you do this to other people...For the sake of this community their needs to be some checks and balances. So I will press this to the fullest degree and continue honoring the principles of Wikipedia.Izazii (talk) 00:12, 19 February 2019 (UTC)

Archive pass?

Hi, Powerenwiki; would you have time to run through Talk:2019 Venezuelan presidential crisis with an eye towards stale sections that can be archived? I have been trying to keep up with archiving, but on sections where I have opined, or where resolution is unclear, I don't want to open myself to charges of inappropriate or premature archiving, so another set of eyes would help. I think some sections can go, but unsure. Thanks in advance! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:23, 20 February 2019 (UTC)

I'll take a look later today. power~enwiki (π, ν) 15:54, 20 February 2019 (UTC)

@SandyGeorgia: there are several talk-threads about inclusions on the per-country list I've refrained from archiving for now, but will archive once the pages are split. I should have more time this week and will try to go over the whole article at some point in the next few days. power~enwiki (π, ν) 03:25, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
Thanks! The talk page keeps hitting 140KB, and it's got all those threads at the top that I just don't know what to do with ... will be glad to have all of that on another page so we can do some writing without bickering about Morocco. I haven't read that article yet, I'll check it later today (after 2019 Venezuelan protests, which is next). Do you know what "Venezuela Al Día" is? (currently a redlink in the article) power~enwiki (π, ν) 17:46, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
It is not a source I would use because I can't get through the pop-ups to even find an "About us" page. Not sure if redlink should stay. Not sure if they should be used. @Jamez42 and ZiaLater: may know better. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 17:49, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
Venezuela Al Día is generally a reliable source, and there are sometimes where it is the main source I can use to reference an edit, but it's not a main outlet such as others including Efecto Cocuyo, El Pitazo, El Estímulo, El Nacional or El Universal. If the question is that if the outlet can be trusted, I'd say it is alright and suggest to quote another reference alongside; however, I can't find the aforementioned red link. --Jamez42 (talk) 22:32, 3 March 2019 (UTC)

Titania McGrath

As I mentioned at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Titania McGrath I think your diagnosis of WP:TOOSOON was correct, so despite my !vote wasn't too unhappy with the outcome. But as I expected there has been a jump up in reports as her book gets close to publication. In particular The Times has now published three separate articles on her or her book: see [3], [4], and [5]. This raises a couple of questions on which I would appreciate your opinion: (1) do you think the AFD would have gone the other way with these sources? (2) is it too soon to try recreating the article? My personal guesses are "yes" and (given that articles created over previous deletions tend to get more scrutinised) "probably still too soon", but I would value a second opinion. Regards, Jonathan A Jones (talk) 15:20, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

The book is coming out this week, right? I would wait until Saturday to try to re-create it. With the coverage I expect will come out this week, it should be an easy pass of AfD then. power~enwiki (π, ν) 15:23, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
Thanks. Good advice. Jonathan A Jones (talk) 15:33, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

Move requests removal

Hi,

You removed the move requests at these articles:

Why is that? Did I use the wrong template? If so, I apologise. If not, may I remind you of WP:AGF? Just because a non registered user did some edits it's not automatically "disruption/evasion".

My apologies. Please note my User:Power~enwiki/Blog - there's WP:MOSMAC which is going to start a single bulk nomination later this month. power~enwiki (π, ν) 18:02, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
Fair enough, I understand now. I'm aware of the running RFC, the reasons I was making these changes (and several other) are because:
a. Most page names have already been changed, those left are the exception,
b. I don't think there is an easy way to automate some mentions of the name "Macedonia" (in contrast e.g. with Categories that were already changed automatically) because instead of the country they may refer to Macedonia (Greece) or Macedonia (ancient kingdom) or even... fruit salads. :) So, the human factor is still needed (maybe I'm wrong in that and bots already have the upper hand).
2A02:587:2605:9700:6EEF:D696:69CF:9278 (talk) 18:27, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
If the discussion is closed, these are non-controversial moves that don't need a discussion - I'll check (and do it) myself soon. Feel free to ask for any future moves here. Sorry for any hostility. power~enwiki (π, ν) 18:30, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

The embassy pages are controversial and I won't do them myself. Perhaps a talk-page stalker will, or else I will re-open that discussion tomorrow. I'll move the template pages (and Talk:Health in the Republic of Macedonia) now. power~enwiki (π, ν) 03:48, 14 March 2019 (UTC)

Hello 力,

News
Discussions of interest
  • Two elements of CSD G6 have been split into their own criteria: R4 for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons (Discussion), and G14 for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page (Discussion).
  • {{db-blankdraft}} was merged into G13 (Discussion)
  • A discussion recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for theatrical plays.
  • There is an ongoing discussion on a proposal to create subject-specific notability guidelines for chemicals and organism taxa.
Reminders
  • NPR is not a binary keep / delete process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The deletion policy and its associated guideline clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See a classic example of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the R template index. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.
NPP Tools Report
  • Superlinks – allows you to check an article's history, logs, talk page, NPP flowchart (on unpatrolled pages) and more without navigating away from the article itself.
  • copyvio-check – automatically checks the copyvio percentage of new pages in the background and displays this info with a link to the report in the 'info' panel of the Page curation toolbar.
  • The NPP flowchart now has clickable hyperlinks.

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

NPR Newsletter No.18

Hello 力,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

  • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
  • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.

Backlog drive coming soon

Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.

Follow-up on education for sustainable development

Hi Power. Thanks again for your action at Education for sustainable development. I've since discovered a number of related articles, which are largely copy-pasted from single UNESCO sources, and as a result read like POV essays. See Climate-friendly school, Climate change education (CCE) and UNESCO ASPNet. I'm not sure any of the content of these is worth keeping, so I'm considering redirecting them all to the main ESD article, but would appreciate your opinion. Cordless Larry (talk) 08:59, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi there. It's good to see you're editing again. I just thought I'd nudge you about this, since you were away from Wikipedia when I posted. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Cordless Larry (talk) 20:29, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
I don't have any quick solutions. UNESCO ASPNet is an "article" that is just a bunch of examples from a pamphlet for students; if there's a good redirect target it would certainly be better served as a single section of a larger article. power~enwiki (π, ν) 02:46, 8 June 2019 (UTC)
Thanks. Sadly this seems to be the case with many of the articles that have emerged from this collaboration with UNESCO. I think I'll try redirecting the ASPNet one to the main UNESCO article, because there is very little of encyclopedic value in it. Cordless Larry (talk) 13:44, 8 June 2019 (UTC)

WP:CEN listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Wikipedia:CEN. Since you had some previously discussed the Wikipedia:CEN redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you wish to do so. –MJLTalk 19:40, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

WP:CEN is now open!

To all interested parties: Now that it has a proper shortcut, the current events noticeboard has now officially opened for discussion!

WP:CEN came about as an idea I explored through a request for comment that closed last March. Recen research has re-opened the debate on Wikipedia's role in a changing faster-paced internet. Questions of WP:NOTNEWS and WP:Recentism are still floating around. That being said, there are still plenty of articles to write and hopefully this noticeboard can positively contribute to that critical process.

Thank you for your participation in the RFC, and I hope to see you at WP:CEN soon! –MJLTalk 17:14, 26 June 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter July-August 2019

Hello 力,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at NPR. There is now also a live queue of AfC submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.

QUALITY of REVIEWING

Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please be on the alert for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors. The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at NPR.

Backlog

The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.

Move to draft

NPR is triage, it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which might have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.

Notifying users

Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are SPA and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.

PERM

Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome if absolutely necessary, but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.

Other news

School and academic holidays will begin soon in various places around the Western world. Be on the lookout for the usual increase in hoax, attack, and other junk pages.

Our next newsletter might be announcing details of a possible election for co-ordinators of NPR. If you think you have what it takes to micro manage NPR, take a look at New Page Review Coordinators - it's a job that requires a lot of time and dedication.

The "report" links currently in the article are references, though they're not formatted as <ref> refs. More generally, all of the Pan American Games (and African Games) articles will get approved by NPP; so long as the article demonstrates the event exists (and the categories are correct) I've been approving them to get them out of the queue. At some point in September I'll do another check. power~enwiki (π, ν) 15:26, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Taxable wages, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Social Security (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Speedy keep

Hello, is it possible you could speedy keep Free Republic of Verdis?

It's pretty noticeable and many links have been sent in the article discussion showing notability including large amounts of real following on medias, trends on news sites and more. May I have a reason why? Have you not noticed all the other micronations that have been accepted with some even having less information and references than Verdis? PowerBOT: Updating vital article template

Hi Power! I am confused about this bot edit. Is this a new policy that the topic parameter in vital article templates has to be changed to the highest-level category? Just curious, thanks! –Austronesier (talk) 12:30, 3 August 2019 (UTC)

@Austronesier: Yes, it was a bulk run to change all the "Language" topics to "Society". A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

Particle.io page

I created the particle.io page because it's one of the largest players in iot, but mainly so information could be captured about its products, not the company. I see that that's not what the page ended up like. I'd like to edit that page to reflect my original intention but I'm not sure that's ok since I'm not that versed on wiki meta stuff. Can you give me some pointers how to go about it? Btw, there are several books that talk about the particle.io hardware Arosa (talk) 13:55, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Bardhyl Selimi requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, such as at Articles for deletion. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. power~enwiki (π, ν) 20:29, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the guidance, but on the indicated page I found no button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". On Sept 4, 2019 this article was deleted, despite my request to delay teh discussion and any deletion at least until Spet 7, 2019, due to my holidays. After my return I relisted the deleted article having added further numerous references from Albania and across the world (including China) showing the notibility of the person's work across the globe. The deletion of the relisted article (perhaps on Sept 10 or 11, 2019) was not preceded by any discussion, which is surprising.
As you suggested I attempted to regain the text of the deleted relisted article, but there seems to be no trace of it left. I have no clue how to regain the text.
Sincerely

New Page Review newsletter November 2019

Hello 力,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 804 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.

Coordinator

Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.

This month's refresher course

Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.

Tools
  • It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
  • It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Community Wish list

There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

A survey to improve the community consultation outreach process

Hello!

The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking to improve the community consultation outreach process for Foundation policies, and we are interested in why you didn't participate in a recent consultation that followed a community discussion you’ve been part of.

Please fill out this short survey to help us improve our community consultation process for the future. It should only take about three minutes.

The privacy policy for this survey is here. This survey is a one-off request from us related to this unique topic.

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:03, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020

Hello 力,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

Hi 力, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020

Hello 力,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

Why did you delete my article? I worked really hard on it! There are so many articles of episodes of the show Desperate Housewives that don’t cite any sources. That was not nice of you to delete what I spent so much time on! KevinBartholomew (talk) 00:53, 13 September 2020 (UTC)

@KevinBartholomew: Read WP:42 and WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. You need reliable coverage of the individual episode somewhere. Just because other articles exist that don't meet that criteria doesn't mean you should create more. Many of those articles were created 15 years ago when standards were different and haven't been scrutinized since. Something like One More Kiss (Desperate Housewives) would get deleted if it were created today. power~enwiki (π, ν) 01:05, 13 September 2020 (UTC)

Dextrose person

You know, I actually thought they might have a point for 5 seconds because I hadn't heard this fringe/conspiracy theory before... but then I spent about 5 minutes researching it... I'm not even sure they understand what they're saying - any "food allergy" in the traditional sense of the term (ex: peanut allergy) is a type 1 hypersensitivity which is an IgE mediated allergy.. so they're basically saying "people with corn allergy". Not to mention that dextrose by definition is just "dextrorotary glucose" (D-glucose), and that I can't find any record of an antibody response to a single hexose sugar anywhere. Bottom line, thanks for the stern warning from a person they hadn't interacted with before - maybe they'll just stop and go away. -bɜ:ʳkənhɪmez (User/say hi!) 06:11, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

Bostock v. Clayton County edit

Hi, concerning the edit you reverted for lack of sources, I don't understand what sort of sources would be necessary in that case. What I wrote is the direct consequence of the opinion written by Neil Gorsuch, in which he describes the source of the problem being the differences marked by sex in what a person's sexual orientation means, and of the fact that bisexual people, regardless of their sex, are attracted to any human beings. Which one of these facts do you want me to source ? The former is quoted earlier in the article (I could add a re-use source I guess), and the latter is definitely in the article about bisexuality, which I integrated in my text edit, but I guess I could also find an external source for that too. Gouvernathor (talk) 02:49, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

@Gouvernathor: is the claim that it the direct consequence of the opinion written by Neil Gorsuch backed up by some published source, or is it your interpretation of the ruling? If there is a published source, please include it. If not, it is likely not appropriate material for the article. power~enwiki (π, ν) 02:53, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

I guess it's as much my interpretation as 4 is the interpretation of the concept of addition to 2 and 2. Isn't the fact that it's a direct consequence of the opinion he gave a sufficient obviousness to waive the need of sourcing it ? (that may sound like sarcasm but it's not) If that's not obvious enough, shouldn't the classification of certain political reactions in "pro" and "cons" categories be also subject to sourcing ? Shouldn't all the abridgment of previous SCOTUS decisions (and there are at least 3 in that particular article) be sourced too ? The term "LGBT" is not present in the opinion itself (not in any quoted part at least, but I doubt it's anywhere in it), so shouldn't the very presence of a "LGBT employment protections" section be sourced ? I guess the user who added it implied the LGBT being affected by the decision from their own interpretation, which in this case is in contradiction with the opinion itself, so... Gouvernathor (talk) 03:12, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

@Gouvernathor: You need a source. You yourself say that sources say that LGBT people are protected by this decision, you can't claim otherwise solely based on your own interpretation. I can't speak for whether other material should have a source as well. power~enwiki (π, ν) 03:16, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

After some research I found this source, would it be sufficient ? [1] Would it be ok if I phrase it like "Since the text of the opinion does not include the term 'bisexual' except in names of other entities and excerpts from other documents, the question whether or not this decision applies to bisexual people has been raised[2]" ? Gouvernathor (talk) 03:35, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

It's not a great source, but it's better than nothing. I don't think that it's enough to mention anything in the lead section of the article, but a sentence like that in the analysis section may be fine. power~enwiki (π, ν) 03:49, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

Comments from Protectthevotenow

Hello, I am new to Wikipedia edits and don't have the slightest idea if I am doing this right. You reverted some edits I made on the Transition Integrity Project page, and I hope you will restore them. You commented that I did not explain them adequately (I think i just said "reverted vandalism"). The page has been repeatedly vandalized by extremist right wing commentators (it has been controversial), who either provide no support for false assertions or who link to non-credible extremist media as their support for inaccurate characterizations. I am connected to the project and it has been subject to a targeted disinformation campaign. I am happy to have accurate information posted, but not false claims that are either supported by references that do no support what they are purported to support or that were themselves full of disinformation. Even the most basic information here is inaccurate: for instance, the Transition Integrity Project is not an "organization" at all; it was just a project, and has no "members." Apologies if this is the wrong way to communicate- I am a newbie, and I do not aspire to Wikipedia expertise; am just trying to prevent this wikipedia page from being used as a disinformation vehicle....— Preceding unsigned comment added by Protectthevotenow (talkcontribs)

@Protectthevotenow: Yeah, there are some issues with that article. My recommendation is to separate changes due to inaccuracies from changes due to there being WP:UNDUE coverage of points of view or original research by the author of the content. And use Talk:Transition Integrity Project. power~enwiki (π, ν) 03:39, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

Reverted edit on energy page

@power~enwiki I apologize for placing the quote at the top of the article where it's apparently not supposed to be. But, I genuinely think that that quote by Richard Feynman would increase the quality of the article by providing insight about the real nature of physics. So, I would like you to place that quote at a suitable position in the article, if possible. Thanks. Apunichbhagwaanhai (talk) 23:06, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

I have a question if you don’t mind.

I saw that the page for Tahu was cleared and replaced with a redirect to Bionicle due to not meeting notability requirements.

Is there a certain character that you’d might consider Instead meeting the criteria as such, like Makuta Teridax, for example, who is the main antagonist of the toyline? Bombastic Brody (talk) 12:04, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

@Bombastic Brody: That's probably not a suitable topic for an article either. From a search on "Makuta Teridax", I don't see substantial reliable coverage. The only thing I see are user-generated fan wikis, DeviantArt images, and the like. power~enwiki (π, ν) 02:55, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

Ok...

Well, I mean, Bionicle was an incredibly popularly series when the toyline was first introduced. It’s not really that popular anymore, but I mean, Lloyd Garmadon from Ninjago for instance has his own individual character page, so I mean, I’m not sure.

Also not to mention that the page I made was not even close to being finished.

For Makuta though, in 2018, there was a Star Wars book that introduced a canon character known as “Makuta” that is named after the same one from Bionicle.

Obviously the Star Wars character is incredibly obscure and has barely any information regarding him, but I guess the fact that Star Wars has used the character as a reference could help?

I just don’t see the argument for Lloyd having his own page... Bombastic Brody (talk) 12:11, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

Request from Goa

We are trying real hard to build the Wikipedia and its content here. Sometimes it's hard to get the proper citations and references in societies where there isn't a lot of content published (especially online) on all subjects. Am working to improve the List of animal rights groups in Goa and would be really grateful if you could help to improve it. Have taken the suggestions made into account while working on it today. fredericknoronha (talk) 08:22, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

Hello

I have updated the requests for vandalism page with specific information on the two minutes hate page:

Could you please look at recent edits by JewishLeftist and the discussion on an external site - where someone points out how "Sinophobia" will disappear due to vandalism by racists. An hour later, the user JewishLeftist vandalized the page by removing Sinophobia. This user has been banned for vandalism before and his edit history shows a grudge with the specific subreddit linked / Asian people in general. Even if Sinophobia does not belong on that page, this specific edit by this user at this time frame, combined with his history, and past ban of vandalism, shows that he is not being unbiased and is not editing in good faith. New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello 力,

A chart of the 2020 New Page Patrol Queue

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

That page you tried to delete

Hey, so I thought I'd post on your page about the List of fictional vegetarian characters page. I know you were the one who wanted to delete it back in early October, which was thwarted by a majority of those who responded. However, I'd just like to mention it because since then I did try to limit the criteria of the characters on the lists to protagonists or recurring characters. It actually has been helpful because there are a good number of characters who don't follow into those categories, which I'll add to my newly created Vegetarian characters in fiction. Of course, there may be some characters I messed up on the list page, but I think I got most of them right. Anyway, I hope you have a good day. --Historyday01 (talk) 03:46, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

Hi Power~enwiki. I noticed that you recently turned List of places named after William Birdwood into a redirect to Birdwood. While I agree that it wasn't viable as a list article, I don't think it's viable as a redirect in this way, either. It implies that every place listed at Birdwood is named after William Birdwood (or this could at least easily be interpreted as such), while this is only the case for one place listed there (Birdwood, South Australia), plus Birdwoodton, Victoria in the See also. All the other places there have nothing to do with the man. As a result, the existence of the redirect isn't helpful for someone who wants to know which places were named after William Birdwood, unless they check the contents of every article listed. I think it would be much better to just list the few notable places named after him in the William Birdwood article, and make List of places named after William Birdwood redirect there. Do you agree? Lennart97 (talk) 13:43, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

I've expanded William Birdwood#Legacy with relevant places from the former list (i.e. two towns and a mountain), and retargeted the redirect to that section. Lennart97 (talk) 18:42, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

Ending the HIV Epidemic Initiative

Hello,

Thanks for even taking time to review the article. The draft was reviewed by several editors with no additional edits requested over the last few weeks. I moved the draft into the mainspace within Wiki permissions, and guidance from other editors who shared their suggestions and careful considerations to Wiki standards. The content is meant to be informational about a federal HIV/AIDS prevention initiative, it is not promotional in tone or text. Could you specify or give direction to what is missing? That would be very helpful.

LGB Alliance

Hi

Thanks for your work on the LGB Alliance article, your edit summaries are clear in what needs to be fixed. I'll go through all the corrections this weekend, I think most of the issues are due to me not adding the right reference in the right place rather than the information not being available, I read a lot about the group before I started writing. One edit summary which was not clear was when you removed the 'Members and supports' section explaining 'BLP issues'. Could you please expand on what specific issues there were in a way that I can fix them?

Thanks again

--Trinkt der Bauer und fährt Traktor (talk) 10:12, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

You can't claim people are part of a group (especially a group you claim is terrible and awful) without reliable sourcing. The Graham Linehan claim failed verification, and as several other claims have also failed verification I removed the whole thing as a potential BLP issue. power~enwiki (π, ν) 19:49, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
OK, thanks, I'll find more sources to confirm they are part of the group and add them when I've found at least 3 reliable sources for each. --Trinkt der Bauer und fährt Traktor (talk) 20:06, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
Hi @Power~enwiki: one last question for you, a lot of the edits you've made have used the edit summary 'fails verification', for clarity could you explain what you mean by this? Do you mean it fails Wikipedia:Verifiability? And if so do you mean that you cannot find the information included in the article in the references, or are you saying the reference isn't reliable or something else? If it is that you're unable to find the information in the source how could I help you find it (I know some of the sources are quite long articles)? Thanks, Trinkt der Bauer und fährt Traktor (talk) 18:43, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
  • FYI, another account has created this article again: LGB Alliance. Crossroads -talk- 20:14, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
  • @Trinkt der Bauer und fährt Traktor:: Be very careful here. They need to be actually reliable sources, and (see WP:NOR) you cannot extrapolate from claims that a person agrees with or supports or donated to or was formerly a member of a group and say that they are a member of the group. And "fails verification" generally means that some requirement of WP:V, WP:OR, or WP:RS was not met. Given the news mentioned below, this is not the place for a tutorial on such matters. Either I or Crossroads (or whoever) can probably explain this stuff to you better, at some other talk page.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  18:39, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

@Crossroads: My father has recently died and I am in no position to do anything about this. Please just go to ANI or Arb enforcement. power~enwiki 67.212.96.198 (talk) 20:18, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

Do you know when this page will be unlocked?

The page I’m referring to is The Henry Stickmin Collection. I was actually wanted to recreate the page, but I guess it was locked due to some debate on whether or not the game was notable enough and/or/ not enough sources originally. Bombastic Brody (talk) 13:14, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

@Bombastic Brody: I'm not sure why you're asking me this; I'm not an admin and have no involvement on this topic. If the draft Draft:The Henry Stickmin Collection addresses the issues that caused Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Henry Stickmin Collection to delete the article, you can request un-protection at WP:RFPP. If not, the article will not be un-salted. In a very quick glance, I guess that the issues have not been addressed. power~enwiki (π, ν) 19:34, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

South African renamings

I agree with your comments on Talk:Port Elizabeth. Unfortunately, SA page renamings seem to have happened without following WP:OFFICIAL or WP:COMMONNAME. Grahamstown comes to mind. I was on the other side of renaming Bela Bela....I supported the page renaming some years back, but I suspect that Warmbaths remains the COMMONNAME. Places like Polokwane took a while to change until it was clear that they were in common use (after the World Cup and 2007 ANC elective conference) ...even then, it is unclear if Polokwane really is the most widely-used name locally, although it has taken over on WP:RS. Recent page renamings seem to be accelerated. The low number of editors on South African topics makes the problem more acute.Park3r (talk) 02:09, 3 March 2021 (UTC)

A metaphor

I move that Georgia (US state)[a] be renamed to Peachtree[b]. This type of thing seems to be popular these days[c].

No, not the Wikipedia article.[d] I move that the state be renamed.
What do you mean, it is not in order for an ANI thread to rename a constituent entity of the United States? Should I try at RM instead?
  1. ^ Georgia is a disambiguation page due to Georgia (country)
  2. ^ Peachtree is currently a disambiguation page
  3. ^ Note what is happening in San Francisco: [1]. George II of Great Britain is a historical figure.
  4. ^ Generally, it takes longer to rename a place's Wikipedia article than it takes for the name itself to change.

@Cbbranin: No I will not. It was reviewed in January, so its current wait is only 2 months. Litre abbreviation RFC

I appreciate the tightly reasoned close there. I was thinking of closing that one myself, since I hadn't participated in it. However, I think you missed a reasoning bit: "ml/L", whether some people like it or not, fails MOS:ARTCON, so it is not a viable option. It's no different from writing "US–Canadian relations in the 20th century have consistently been friendlier than U.S.–Mexico relations". It's actually worse, more like "the discrepancy between Canada–US/U.S.–Mexico relations". And it's actually worse in other ways, especially the fact that a case change can signal a change in base unit (e.g. kb = kilobit, KB = kilobyte; tsp = teaspoon, Tsp = tablespoon). While it might not be ISO and ANSI style, it is common. So mixing two abbreviations for "lit[re|er]" in the same construction verges on intentionally confusing to the overwhelming majority of readers who are in the class "non-experts on unit symbols". We have ARTCON for a reason, and as a general principle in the main MOS it takes precedence over lower-CONLEVEL nit-picking in MoS sub-guidelines (see fourth sentence of first lead paragraph at WP:MOS). Especially something that emerges from an RfC with only 20-odd participants, only four of whom mentioned consistency within an article (and only three of whom count, because the fourth pooh-poohed it in favor of an entirely bogus ENGVAR position). That is, the majority of the RfC respondents were not even aware of ARTCON's applicability – not aware that whatever they came up with in the RfC would need to comply with it. This is a common sort of problem in style RfCs, especially ones that involve topical specialization; they usually attract input mostly, even entirely, from people deeply absorbed in that topic and without a broad understanding of how their proposals interact with other WP:P&G material. While this is more often a problem with sports, entertainment, military history, and specific-sciences wikiprojects, this would not be the first time that MOS:NUM regulars have tried to enact something that directly conflicted with the main MoS and which had to be undone later.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  03:27, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

Nobody mentioned ARTCON in the discussion; while I wasn't familiar with the acronym I was aware of the guidance against mixing style usages within an article. If "ml/L" is already prohibited by the style guideline, it shouldn't be relevant to the close text; I did not add any text regarding "consistency" to the style page as a result of the discussion, I simply didn't see consensus to add text explicitly forbidding that construction. On a township in Indiana

Leopold Township, Perry County, Indiana, a geographic entity in the US of "similar" prominence to Ağcakent, Aziziye. Leopold Township's article has minimal sourced content and substantial problems with being up-to-date: the most recent US census data for location and population, a local history book for one sentence on the name of the township, an unsourced list of cemeteries, a few external links (one of which now contains information in Spanish on asthma) and various higher-level divisions (school districts, state house seat data has been incorrect for ten years) that contain the township. I think the US township articles (such as this one) should largely be merged to the county articles. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 18:17, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
