Kanawha, the gunboat USS Aroostook, and the screw steamer USS Penguin (all United States Navy) shelled her on 8 July when Confederates attempted to salvage her, then personnel in two boats from USS Kanawha and one from USS Penguin boarded her and set her afire. She later was salvaged and returned to Confederate service.[2][37] |
