SVI (file format) moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, SVI (file format), is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. ... discospinster talk 19:56, 18 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, I will check the information and add more sources, thank you for the feedback! Urban Versis 32 (talk) 22:06, 18 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:SVI (file format), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Thanks for signing up for this project. It is a very busy and active project with lots going on and we can always use more help and especially a fresh set of eyes. If you haven't done so already you might want to add Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Aircraft to your watch list as this is where much of the background discussion occurs. You may also want to watch Wikipedia:New articles (Aircraft) as this is where newly created articles get listed for peer review. Having a look over these new articles is a great way to get a feel for how things are done on the project and also most new articles need reviewing anyway. If you have any questions you can leave me a note or post at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Aircraft, either way you will get a quick response. - Ahunt (talk) 02:08, 23 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Vickers Boxkite

[edit]

It would be good to know who designed the originals, since Hewlett & Blondeau were not designers. But the real reason I'm leaving the note is that one of the references you gave is a site devoted to copyright violation, and so not acceptable. it would have been better to cite the book that it rips off. I have this at home (I edit from a public library) & will try to remeber to bring it along next time.TheLongTone (talk) 15:58, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Copy edit notes

[edit]

Thank-you for your contributions to the April GOCE blitz. I'm going to review some of your copy-edits and provide feedback; please receive this constructively.

Some of the things I'm noting are referred to in Wikipedia's Manual of Style (MOS). This is our house style guide, which is specialized for the needs of an international online encyclopedia and may differ from the styles you're used to. Copy editors should be better informed of the MOS than the average Wikipedia editor. That doesn't mean you have to memorize it, just be aware of it and refer to it as needed.

  • from January 14, 2011, to June 29, 2012. You removed the underlined comma. We actually need this comma because with month-day-year dates, the year is a parenthetical. See MOS:DATECOMMA. On the other hand, with from September 7, to December 14, 2012 the underlined comma should be removed. bigger issue next bullet
  • There is a mix of date formats in the article (mdy and dmy). Copy editors should apply one style consistently throughout the article. There is a template at the top of the article's wikicode, {{use dmy dates}}. Assuming that was applied correctly, the dates should be changed to dmy format. The nice thing about dmy dates is that you don't have to worry about those commas.
  • Note that the titles of major works of art (TV shows, films, music albums, books, plays, major paintings and statues) are styled in italics. The titles of minor works of art (TV episodes, skits, songs, book chapters, minor paintings and statues) are styled in double quotes. (See MOS:MAJORWORKS)
  • The plot summaries for the seasons one and two describe what is happening within the context of the series, which is how plot summaries are generally handled. The third season describes it from outside of narrative (referring to "season 3" and "the story") which is a bit jarring. These should be consistent.
  • I did a fair amount of additional copyediting and cleanup which you can see in this diff.

Will add more as I get to other articles. – Reidgreg (talk) 01:36, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for helping me to be a better copy editor! Urban Versis 32 (talk) 16:15, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There may be some notability issues with this article so I'm not sure it's worth putting a lot of effort into it (as articles on non-notable subjects may be deleted).

Longer articles tend to be more complex and face more issues for copy-editors. In addition, the size of the article can pose problems for maintaining the level of concentration to take note of fine distinctions and apply consistent style. I generally discourage newer copy editors from working on long articles, but let's see how you did.

  • This list article is arranged like a glossary. If I felt the article was notable and worthwhile, I might apply MOS:GLOSS to it, which is a bit of work. I wouldn't consider this a must-do for copyediting, however.
  • As I mentioned above, there are special stylings for titles of major and minor works of art. A segment or sketch is a fairly minor work of art, and would be styled with double quotes (or perhaps single quotes) rather than italics (MOS:MAJORWORKS). So It is a special segment that has a similar concept to I Object, Your Honor should be: It is a special segment that has a similar concept to "I Object, Your Honor". (This differentiates from the major work, Eat Bulaga!, which is styled in italics.) These styles should be applied consistently throughout the list article.
  • This list article is very, very long. The maximum recommended article size is 10,000 words (WP:LENGTH), and this is more than three times that. Frankly, its bloated and possibly full of trivia. The list entries which are uncited may be removed as trivia, though you might get pushback from the article's authors for doing so. It might be better to mark these with {{citation needed}} or {{trivia-inline}}. That is optional but not a bad idea if you are making a thorough check of a problematic article. What I would expect you to do as a copy-editor is to make the language as concise as possible. A few examples:
    • It is a special segment that has a similar concept to I Object, Your Honor and I Object #NasaanAngHustisya?, that tests the cleverness and originality of the Eat Bulaga! hosts. The hosts are divided into two teams. In each round, both teams are given one specific object. Each group will take turns thinking of and acting out a clever use for that object by realizing what other objects it might resemble. For instance, a closed umbrella roughly resembles a sword or a walking cane. The team must then act out its new function. At the end of each round, the judges decide which team had the cleverest ideas. The only difference between ACTually and I Object is the theme and the setting, and that both teams must now require to mention the use and function of the object. → The hosts are divided into two teams and given an object to improvise a scene, which is judged on cleverness. It differs from "I Object" as the use and function of the object must be mentioned.‹The template Fake citation needed is being considered for merging.› [citation needed]
    • It is a Facebook promo for the entire month of August 2019 that is part of the 40th-anniversary celebration of Eat Bulaga!. Certain requirements will be met during the show. Participants watching on television must comment on the correct answer, along with a code that will be given by the program, on the designated Facebook post from the official Facebook page of Eat Bulaga! under a certain time limit. A total of 40 participants will be chosen, for the entire month of August 2019. 3 winners will be chosen, who will each win a monthly allowance of ten thousand pesos for one year. → An August 2019 viewer contest with three top prizes of 120,000 pesos.‹The template Fake citation needed is being considered for merging.› [citation needed]
    • After appearing as a three-year-old contestant in the segment Little Miss Philippines in 1987, Aiza Seguerra became a child wonder and subsequently joined the show to become the youngest host at that time.[2] She received her own segment, Aiza's Kiddie Korner, to feature her funny antics and comic sketches with her co-hosts, and to headline her charisma and many talents, including her famous "duck walk" dance.[3] Later, this segment was renamed Kiddie Korner together with Lady Lee. → A showcase for the talents of Aiza Seguerra,[3] the youngest host at the time, who had previously appeared in "Little Miss Philippines" in 1987 at age 3.[2]
    • It is a segment where the hosts of the Juan for All, All for Juan: Bayanihan of d'Pipol segment search for a sari-sari store that sells multiple Alaska Fortified Milk products on a certain barangay. The spotted sari-sari store will win a cash prize and gift packs from Alaska. The segment is sponsored by the milk brand Alaska. → A segment in the "Juan for All" theme, where the hosts search a particular neighbourhood for a sari-sari store which carries the line of their sponsor's products; the first store found receives a cash prize and merchandise from the sponsor.
  • Like other proper names, brand names and companies are styled with word capitalization but not italics. multiple Alaska Fortified Milk products → multiple Alaska Fortified Milk products
  • ATM with the BAE'S is a segment of Eat Bulaga! that aired since Sept 2015 - Jan 2016. Alden Richards and Sam Y.G are the Hosts of this EB! segment Acronyms should be defined on first use (MOS:ACRO). If you can't determine its meaning, tag it with {{expand acronym}}.
  • 5 contestants are chosen from the studio audience In general use, numbers from 0–9 should be spelled out (though there are exceptions such as dates). It's particularly expected for such a number to be spelled out when it is at the beginning of a sentence (MOS:SPELL09).
  • when the Music Stops to pick a BAE, so that they could join Jackpot Round that they called ATM Ang Tenga Mo!. All the contestants are willing to answer the Questions that they prepared in the Jackpot Round looks like a lot of overcapitalization (MOS:CAPS)

You made some good edits, but I don't feel it was nearly thorough enough to count as a completed copyedit. – Reidgreg (talk) 19:21, 24 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • It appears that you addressed the {{lead too short}} tag by moving the article's History section up into the lead. This is not a good editing practice. The lead should summarize the body of the article, and generally there shouldn't be anything in the lead which isn't also in the body of the article. (see WP:Lead dos and don'ts, MOS:LEAD.) A better edit would have been to retain the History section and summarize the key points of the History section and the other sections in the lead.
  • A quotation was styled in italics; it should be styled in double quotation marks. (MOS:QUOTE)
  • The court and government asked them to pay for 3 crore property damages. You removed the word crore, which is part of the Indian numeric system. What we should do here is to give the figure in Indian units, then Western units in parenthesis. i.e.: 3 crore (30 million rupees).
  • The organisation had earlier protested programs You changed organisation → organization. However, Indian English uses the British spelling with an s. (see Indian English#Spelling and MOS:ENGVAR.)
  • The section Relief and charity work is in reverse chronological order, which is a little weird.
  • The section Advocacy and protests was disorganized, and could have used layout work as part of the copy edit. I organized it topically: protests which turned violent, protests against women's rights, protests against portrayals of Mohammad, and protests of things outside of India.

With the problems introduced, I wouldn't consider this a complete copy edit.

Copy editing requires thoroughness, attention to detail, and a good understanding of style issues. I'm sure you'd get better results if you took your time and really considered the best way to present the information. – Reidgreg (talk) 01:15, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your copy edit seems to be limited to rephrasing one sentence and adding a half-dozen wikilinks. Here are some additional changes I made to the article:

  • In the list of comparative health advantages, there is overcapitalization. The section also has a forward slash (MOS:SLASH) and some consideration should be given to whether the list should be ordered or unordered (MOS:LISTNUMBERED). If ordered, the list introduction should indicate why.
  • There is more overcaptialization in later section headers, which should have sentence case.
  • from 1978 - 1998 → from 1978 to 1998 (MOS:RANGE)

Note that the article was tagged with {{essay-like}}. This is an issue that a copy editor can address by applying encyclopedic tone to the article. Check the diff of my edit. While an essay tries to lead the reader through an argument, an encyclopedia article relays the accepted facts. – Reidgreg (talk) 22:16, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2022 May newsletter

[edit]

The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  1. New York (state) Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
  2. Christmas Island AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
  3. Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
  4. Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
  5. Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
  6. United States Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
  7. England Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.

The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. An article you recently created, Kawasaki Ki-22, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Improving the Urban air mobility article

[edit]

Hi User:Urban Versis 32 How are you? I noticed you are a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation and wanted to see if you'd be open to collaborate. The Wikipedia article Urban air mobility is outdated, and I've researched to create a better version in my sandbox. Another Wikipedian has given the proposed new version their thumbs up but has been inactive. Would you be open to review and if you accept it, publish the new content on the article. Please let me know if you have any questions!--Chefmikesf (talk) 22:42, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I always like to help review and improve articles that need them! 😃 Urban Versis 32 (talk) 02:08, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New Article Needed for sysbench request help

[edit]

Hi UV32,

sysbench needs an article. It is used by linux community and there is no article for this software. — Gregwire13 (talk!) 22:08, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gregwire, I would like to assist with your article. I need to do some research to see if the article is notable enough for its own page. I also use Linux and am part of the Linux WikiProject, so I know a little bit about the sysbench command. As soon as you publish the first revision of the article, I can help too. I will add it to the list of in-development pages at the Linux WikiProject too. — Urban Versis 32KB(talk | contribs) 22:17, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Userbox request by @TheGOATTB12

[edit]

Hi, Urban Versis 32. I read on the Userboxes page you are open to userbox requests. I do actually have a userbox that I want you to make. One that says "This user is grateful for Man-Man he opened up doors" but link the Man-Man to Kendrick Lamar, and in the left container thing an "FT" that links to Family Ties (song). I have no preference on colors or anything like that. Thanks! TheGOATTB12 (talk) 11:47, 7 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I created your custom userbox. I am open to suggestions for tweaking it if you wish.

- Ahunt (talk) 20:27, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I think there was a mistake -- I simply updated the note that was next to my username so that anyone who saw it could see my goals regarding the project. My apologies for the misunderstanding. Urban Versis 32KB(talk | contribs) 22:55, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2022 July newsletter

[edit]

The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, with 746 points, a tally built both on snooker and other sports topics, and on more general subjects.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, with 683 points, garnered mostly from "In the news" items and related DYKs.
  • Sammi Brie, with 527, from a variety of submissions related to radio and television stations.

Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article nomination, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Signature

[edit]

Hello, your signature has a vertical bar in it (|) that can cause templates to break, as happened on the page Draft:DEEPAK RANJAN MAHARANA. Please replace this vertical bar with the template {{!}} instead to avoid this in the future. Clay (talk) 15:50, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You Rejected a draft Draft:Khajan Das

[edit]

Hi Urban Versis 32, You just rejected the Draft:Khajan Das giving a reason that submission is not adequately supported by reliable sources. This is an Indian government website which is a reliable reference. And mla is a notable topic and passes WP:NPOL. Please read. Nupamjo (talk) 18:48, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I know, however the other references may not be reliable. You can always remove the unreliable sources and replace them with the reliable ones, then re-submit. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 18:54, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Please explain why these references are not reliable? 1 (Aaj Tak), 2 (News18 India), 3 (ABP News), 4 (Election Commission of India). Nupamjo (talk) 19:05, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I put "unreliable sources" because I am not sure if foreign languages count (#1, 2, and 3). I'll do some research and get back to you (#4 is a good source). Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 21:18, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Foreign sources are allowed per Wikipedia:Verifiability#Non-English_sources but English ones are preferable. If you think the sources are reliable, then they are reliable. My bad for thinking they weren't allowed. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 01:48, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bradhurst

[edit]

I see you verified my Bradhurst (surname) page. While i am glad you approved it, it was meant to be a neutral name page (for both given and surnames). I would like it if you would please remove the "(surname)" from the page's name. Thanks. OmniFrieza994 (talk) 21:57, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I can change the name back. My bad for the confusion. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 22:54, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Shrimad Rajchandra Love and Care

[edit]

You cited the page reads like an advertisement. This organization is big - so it has a lot of content - and I believe you and other editors prior to you have failed to see the neutral sources and the neutral language presented.

This NGO is recognized by the United Nations, has several congressional proclamations in the United States. It has been noted for starting global movements for raising awareness of organ donations in Australia. It has several animal welfare initiatives in India and the United Kingdom.

The NGO just does a lot and because of the heavy content, it seems you have mistaken it for non-neutral or an "ad". I'm creating the page because it deserves to be out in the public where hopefully others will contribute to its edits.

I'm ready to make changes, but the overall page is objective. A request to re-read or point out sections where it's too "ad-like" and suggestions from existing pages so I can make a better edit.

Thank you so much for taking the time out to review, I truly appreciate it. Each edit has made me a better contributor, I feel. Dmehta81 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 05:59, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, I'll leave some comments on your draft to point out parts of the article that aren't written from a neutral point of view. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 22:49, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Help on Userboxes

[edit]

Dear, UrbanVersis32 I need some help with my userboxes on the user page. The text, drawings fall on to the right completely ruining the organization. If you could take some time to edit my page, I would be incredibly happy. Thank you. अथर्व कॉल (talk) 21:38, 31 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I fixed the error causing the text to fall to the left. You had too many spaces between some userboxes, causing them to fail. I also noticed that one of your images was stuck below the userbox, the drawing of the Indosaurus Matleyi. Unfortunately, as the userbox template does not support images on the right-hand side, I had to replace the images with an image gallery. Please reply if you have any questions. Draft:TMGM

[edit]

Hello, could you please elaborate on the exact reasons for decline of DRAFT:TMGM. For example your message says it sounds like an advertisement and it is not from "neutral point of view," but I am having a hard part determining which exact parts have this issue? could you please state the exact parts or sentences that have this issue? In addition, which citations are not considered reliable or independent? I have not used any source that is not independent? "independent" means that they do not have any relations with the site. Please point out which exact source is not independent or reliable? There are 26 sources provided, are you saying everything not independent or reliable? Thanks. Chessterb (talk) 22:36, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Chessterb. Your draft reads more like an advertisement than a proper entry because it has sales-oriented language. In your article, try to avoid sentences like "TMGM offers contract for difference (CFD) trading with 7 asset classes and more than 15,000 trading products under the regulation of the Australian Security and Investment Commission (ASIC) and the Vanuatu Financial Services Commission (VFSC)." Thank you I will revise that. However, citations in other languages are acceptable. The 2 included are from reputable foreign publications and can easily be translated using Google Translate button in the chrome browser. I will look for some other sources before I resubmit. I know they have tons more coverage. Chessterb (talk) 07:44, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Quiet quitting

[edit]

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work-to-rule is very similar to Quiet Quitting. I think you were looking for that.

The motivation is different (temporary industrial action vs. a personal and undeclared position). For my two cents', they're worth different articles but should have links to reach other. 49.186.33.53 (talk) 21:11, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll set up "See Also" sections on both pages. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 01:24, 18 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I gave a first copy-editing pass on your submission. I mostly tried to tighten the language, expanded the how to a bit, and reduce the number of sections and footnotes by merging them together and inlining the information.

Let me know how it looks. I tried to keep as much of your original written style as possible. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 02:50, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Signpost article on Userboxes

[edit]

Might be worth covering some of the more recent arguments about userboxes. Wikipedia:Miscellany_for_deletion/User:UBX/onemanonewoman_4th_nomination, Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Qartagir/Userboxes/Fascist and Wikipedia:Miscellany_for_deletion/User:FerrousTigrus/ub/non-bias_hitler are good examples of how there's been a recent decision to ban user boxes that, well, encourage hatred towards groups of users that's pretty well enforced. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.1% of all FPs 05:28, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info on userbox controversies, I'll add that to the article. By the way, I needed some more input for the "Interview" section of my article, so if you would like to be interviewed on userboxes, here are the questions:
  1. How did you first get into userboxes?
  2. How long have you been using/creating userboxes?
  3. Why do you like userboxes?
  4. What's your favorite userbox and why?
Thanks, Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 15:46, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have added the information to the article: Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/Next_issue/In_focus#Recent_controversies. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 16:03, 21 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's worth mentioning that I'm one of the ancients, so a lot of Userbox things for me were things I set up years ago. But I'd say I got into Userboxes through Commons. Commons is a multilingual site; as such, knowing what languages people speak is fairly vital, and a whole series of userboxes exist to communicate information about this. It's simple, easy to use, and just really helps communication there. Which I guess makes them my favourite userboxes, since I think they are by far the most important. I added them in 2008, about two years after I started editing, which I think I started doing in February 2006, though between Single Login not existing back then and a period of pseudonymous editing around 2008 after some harassment creating an account snarl here, it's a little harder to tell from my contributions on en-wiki as opposed to Commons, where I've always used my real name.
I suppose I'm not that interested in sharing personal details as some. If people need to know I act in Gilbert and Sullivan or write music or studied biology or live in Scotland or≥ am gay they probably know, and if they want to know what I primarily do on Wikipedia my user page archiving my 715 featured pictures will tell them. Hence, I'm not as userbox-y as some.
That said, I do believe Wikipedia should be a friendly, welcoming place, and any user box that espouses hate really has to go. Your right to say your awful views is not one that applies to Wikipedia. And, frankly? I'd rather, for example, that trans people feel safe editing Wikipedia even if we lose dozens of people who really, really want to use their userpages to attack trans people and are up in arena they can't. The kind of people desperate to use their userpages to attack other Wikipedians are exactly the kind of people we don't want. Basically, Wikipedia:No racists and Wikipedia:No Nazis. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.1% of all FPs 11:18, 22 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I saw the format my responses had to fit into and have taken the liberty of editing them a bit. I hope it's clear that while my interaction with Userboxes more recently has been to get rid of some awful ones, I do think they're great for Wikipedia. The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

At this stage, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For the remaining competitors, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and importantly, before the deadline on October 31st!

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Looking for further feedback if possible on my draft.

[edit]

First off thanks for helping make sure Wikipedia is able to function I appreciate you volunteering your time. I was wondering if you would take another look at the Draft:PCS VoIP article again, and provide any feedback if I had not made the sufficient changes. After looking at other VoIP company's pages it was clear to me that in my case less is more and focus on the technology of VoIP and Pathways to other areas of VoIP. I properly linked any locations and terminology and trimmed my sources to only include outside independent sources.

Thanks in advance,

Signature request

[edit]

Hello, Urban Versis 32! I have noticed that you create signatures on request, so I want to ask for your kind help about it. I guess that, after using the standard signature since registering in 2010, I got a bit bored with it. So I'd love to have a "customized", or personalized signature. —Sundostund (talk) 12:56, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, what type of signature would you have in mind? Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 22:01, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have some exact idea, actually. I was thinking of somewhat bold letters (similar to the letters in your signature), in green, as I use that color in the infobox on my user page for quite awhile now, so it became a kind of "trademark color" for me... Again inspired by your signature, I would also want to have both my talk page and contributions visible in the signature, with the exact style of the letters – somewhat small and not bold. —Sundostund (talk) 10:52, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I created two variations of something similar to your description:
If you want me to add, change, or remove something, don't hesitate to tell me and I'll change or fix it. A good signature, suited to your personal preference, is how others remember you! Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 00:03, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I forgot to tag you, so hereby: @Sundostund
Also, I can add a dash right before the username if you wish. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 00:04, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for your work, I really appreciate that! I prefer the first variation, as I like its darker shade of green. I would just change the italic-style of the last five letters; it would be better if all ten letters are written in the same, ordinary way, without italic. Also, would it be possible that, later on, I myself change something in the signature, if I want to? I wouldn't want to bother you about it, if I can do it by myself. —Sundostund (talk) 10:32, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And yes, there should be a long dash (—) before the username, as I use in my current signature. —Sundostund (talk) 11:03, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, here's the result of the requested adjustments:
Sundostund (talk / contribs)
And here's the code to copy into the settings:
[[User:Sundostund|<b><span style="color:green">Sundo<i>stund</i></span></b>]] ([[User talk:Sundostund|talk]] / [[Special:Contributions/Sundostund|contribs]])
Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 23:24, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You probably meant this to be the result of the adjustments:
Sundostund (talk / contribs)
And its code:
— [[User:Sundostund|<b><span style="color:green">Sundostund</span></b>]] ([[User talk:Sundostund|talk]] / [[Special:Contributions/Sundostund|contribs]])
It may be some misunderstanding; you posted one of the previous two versions of the signature, without changes. —Sundostund (talk) 23:39, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I also have to ask, is it necessary to always use copy-paste of the code, for the signature to be used, or is there some "automated" way for it to become visible? —Sundostund (talk) 23:43, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
To answer the last question, to my knowledge the only way to start actively using a signature is to copy and paste it into the settings. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 00:55, 30 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think I got it, by changing settings in Special:Preferences. — Sundostund (talk / contribs) 00:02, 30 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for your help, really! When thinking of it, I'll probably not keep that long dash as an integral part of the signature; its somewhat aesthetically better if the dash is added separately from the signature. —Sundostund (talk / contribs) 00:07, 30 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about the italics, I think I forgot to remove them before I copied the code. I apologize for the inconvenience. Anyway, I see you've started using the signature! Thanks for requesting my services (Before you I'd only done one other signature besides my own). Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 00:54, 30 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2022 November newsletter

[edit]

The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is

  • England Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
  • New York City Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
  • Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
  • Chicago PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
  • Toronto Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.

During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. Well done everyone! All those who reached the final round will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or the overall leader in this field.

  • England Lee Vilenski wins the featured article prize, for a total of 6 FAs during the course of the competition and 3 in the final round.
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh wins the featured list prize, for 3 FLs in round 2.
  • Adam Cuerden wins the featured picture prize, for 39 FPs during the competition.
  • Toronto Z1720 wins the featured article reviewer prize, for 35 FARs in round 4.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius wins the good article prize, for 32 GAs in round 1.
  • SounderBruce wins the featured topic prize, for 4 FT articles in round 1.
  • England Lee Vilenski wins the good topic prize, for 34 GT articles in round 5.
  • Sammi Brie wins the good article reviewer prize, for 71 GARs overall.
  • Sammi Brie wins the Did you know prize, for 30 DYKs in round 3 and 106 overall.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132 wins the In the news prize, for 106 ITNs in round 5 and 289 overall.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January and possible changes to the rules and scoring are being discussed on the discussion page. You are invited to sign up to take part in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to have a good turnout for the 2023 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners and finalists, and thank all participants for their involvement! @Onel5969: the Gyronautics disambig redirects to pages that are a synonym of Gyronautics, for those who are more familiar with the term Gyronautics. This page may function better as a redirect than a disambig, though. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 21:46, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Neither of the targets mention that fact. Onel5969 TT me 22:35, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
True, I guess the page isn't really necessary. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 21:29, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Guild of Copy Editors December 2022 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to our latest newsletter, a quarterly digest of Guild activities since October. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

Blitz: Our October Copy Editing Blitz focused on July and August 2022 request months; and articles tagged for c/e in December 2021 and January 2022. Seventeen of those who signed up claimed at least one copy-edit, and between them copy-edited forty-six articles. Barnstars awarded are here.

Drive: In the November Backlog Elimination Drive, thirty editors signed up, twenty-two of whom claimed at least one copy-edit. Both target months—December 2021 and January 2022—were cleared, and February was added to the target months. Sixteen requests were copy-edited and 239 articles were removed from the backlog. Barnstars awarded are here.

Blitz: Our seven-day-long December 2022 Copy Editing Blitz begins on 17 December at 00:01 (UTC)*. It will focus on articles tagged for copy-edit in February 2022, and pending requests from September and October. Barnstars awarded will be available here.

Progress report: As of 22:40, 8 December 2022, GOCE copyeditors have processed 357 requests since 1 January, there were seventy-four requests outstanding and the backlog stands at 1,791 articles. We always need skilled copy-editors; please help out if you can.

Userbox Request

[edit]

I am in need of a Userbox that says "This user is a fan of Naang Naang". There is a single image of her which happens to not be copyrighted. (It's the black and white one from Last.fm)

Microplastic Consumer (talk) 03:01, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Microplastic Consumer, I created the userbox. Unfortunately, I am unable to use the image due to it's lack of copyright info on its userpage. According to the notification on the page, it will be deleted on 16 December 2022. Please see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Naang_Naang.webp for more information. At the bottom is the userbox without the image.

WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

[edit]

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Userbox Request

[edit]

Could you please create a userbox that reads: This user's favourite number is *insert number*. (Is it possible for users to change things like numbers in userboxes?). Thank you, Foxx247 (talk) 11:41, 17 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sure! At the end of the message is the userbox. To add a number, when you add the userbox, {{User:Urban Versis 32/Userboxes/FavNumber}} just add a |1 at the end of FavNumber but before }}, as in {{User:Urban Versis 32/Userboxes/FavNumber|1}}. Replace the 1 with the number you wish to set as your favorite! Lastly, if you'd like me to add something else to the userbox, such as an image, don't hesitate to reply!

I'm reading this comment again, and I'd like to offer a word of advice: when copying code, a helpful indicator to let other users know that it is code designed to be copied and pasted is to use <code></code>. This will make the code have the monoscript font. Also, another helpful thing to use is <nowiki></nowiki>. This will allow you to paste code in the correct syntax without worrying that adding brackets or other code will break the page. Essentially, it will allow you to paste code without having the code actually run and possibly break the page. So, for example, your code on the screen might look like:
{{subst:The Original Barnstar|1= I'm giving out Barnstars to random people to boost Wiki morale!!! If you want to help me, copy and paste the following code!}}
And the code that I used for this is:
<code><nowiki>{{subst:The Original Barnstar|1= I'm giving out Barnstars to random people to boost Wiki morale!!! If you want to help me, copy and paste the following code!}}</nowiki>
(I didn't use <code></code> for the above as it would break the page otherwise.)
Anyway, just a little bit of (hopefully) helpful advice for you! Let me know if you have any questions :)

WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

[edit]

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, Chicago PCN02WPS, and London AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Oxford Metrics Draft

[edit]

Hi Urban Versis 32, thank you for recently reviewing my AfC Draft:Oxford Metrics, I appreciate you taking the time to share your perspective on the article in its current form. I have been in discussion with a few editors about the article, who’s feedback led to the tweaks I made between submissions. It would be great to hear from you what more you think I can do to get the article into a better position before resubmitting?

Thanks again for your time, I look forward to working together!

EWix76 EWix76 (talk) 15:36, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @EWix76! Thanks for asking! First off, try to write your article from a neutral point of view. This essentially means to try to write more about the company itself rather than its accomplishments. Also, on the "Sales, partnerships and acquisitions" section, try to write each thing in one paragraph rather than in a bunch of subheadings. Lastly, make sure you have reliable sources and maybe try to expand the article itself in general. If you follow all of these steps and the article gets declined again, the topic may not be notable enough for its own article. If you have any further questions about this draft or Wikipedia in general, please let me know. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 15:59, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Urban Versis 32, thanks for the kind message and advice, it has been really helpful as I continue to edit and optimise the article Draft:Oxford Metrics. I have implemented another round of edits with neutrality front of mind and would be very appreciative if you could take another look and let me know what you think.

Thanks for all of your time so far and for sharing your knowledge!

EWix76 EWix76 (talk) 15:08, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! You did a good job fixing the errors I pointed out. However, the article still sounds like it wasn't written from a neutral point of view. Again, try to remove parts of the article which list the company's accomplishments, as this sounds more like an advertisement than an encyclopedic article. To give you an example, try to cut down the sentence "Its technology has been used to create effects for television series and Hollywood films including The Mandalorian, The Polar Express, and Gladiator" down to "Its technology has been used to create visual effects for various television series and movies," Another helpful thing would be to try to edit other articles about companies similar to Oxford Metrics, as this may help you get a feel for how this article may be written. I hope this info will be helpful for your article! Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 01:28, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Urban Versis 32! Thanks for the feedback, I’m glad the recent edits were a step in the right direction. Thank you for the tip regarding building up further experience. On your suggestion to edit other similar articles, I was wary of editing any article relating to our sector, peers, or competitors, given my COI status, however I will continue studying such articles to improve my own. Regarding the draft itself, thanks for the further guidance. I had included the information referenced to highlight notability, but I will make changes such as the one you have outlined throughout the article to achieve neutrality if you think that is the best course of action. Thanks again! EWix76 EWix76 (talk) 15:21, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Of course! I'm glad to help! Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 14:41, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2023 July newsletter

[edit]

The third round of the 2023 WikiCup has come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 175 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

Contestants achieved 11 featured articles, 2 featured lists, 47 good articles, 72 featured or good article reviews, over 100 DYKs and 40 ITN appearances. As always, any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

Liancourt Rocks dispute

[edit]

Please see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Captions § Formatting and punctuation (MOS:CAPFRAG): Most captions are not complete sentences, but merely sentence fragments, which should not end with a period or full stop. 2602:FC24:13:1:E4F7:9065:0:1 (talk) 05:41, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize for the mistake. You are correct, as captions only have periods if they are full sentences, which the captions of the images you edited weren't. I have reverted my changes so your revision removing the periods is accepted. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 16:45, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Help

[edit]

Hello, I am new to the Wikipedia world, and you just denied my article. I need help! How do I make it sound more neutral? I would love to receive any help on how to get the Wikipedia page approved. 80.32.125.65 (talk) 10:17, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This is my article: Draft:Foundation for Advice and Action in the Defense of Animals 80.32.125.65 (talk) 10:21, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thanks for asking! First and foremost, review WP:ADVOCACY as this article is written like an advertisement for FAADA. It is not written from a neutral point of view and as such is not currently suitable for a Wikipedia article. For example, try to change the sentence "It is a private, independent, and non-profit foundation that has been active since 2004." to "FAADA is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2004". Also, try to avoid using weasel words and phrases in your article, such as "...offers this campaign to promote the identification, sterilization, and anti-rabies vaccination for dogs, cats, rabbits and/or ferrets at competitive prices." Lastly, though this isn't required, I would recommend trying to find some sources written in English to further improve verification of the article. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 14:55, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Draft:MPOWERD

[edit]

Hello, you recently declined Draft:MPOWERD. I was hoping to receive more specific feedback about the issues, as the reason provided appears quite general. For instance, is the main problem related to it sounding like an advertisement or is it lacking sufficient credible sources? The message mentioned that it should include references from a variety of independent, reliable, and published sources, not solely materials produced by the subject's creator. Is this aspect also a concern, or is it primarily the advertising tone that needs improvement? It's important to note that there are no self-published materials, and the article includes references from reputable sources such as LA Times, NY Times, Fast Company, and Christian Science Monitor. Thus, I would greatly appreciate receiving more specific feedback to enhance the article and resubmit it accordingly. Thank you for your assistance.Plumzorro (talk) 19:24, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Plumzorro, your article includes numerous sentences that sound like they belong more in an advertisement than an encyclopedic article. For instance, the sentence "MPOWERD manufactures solar-powered clean technology products such as solar lanterns, while also taking donations from customers and using proceeds from previous sales to provide solar lanterns to people in areas where power is inaccessible," could literally be shortened to "MPOWERD manufactures solar-powered products such as solar lanterns." Please refer to WP:ADVOCACY for more info on this. Avoid weasel phrases like the sentence I put above as this was the biggest thing that screamed "advertisement!" at me when I reviewed the article. Also, try to expand your article in general. If you have any further questions please let me know, I am happy to help! Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 22:34, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My intention was not to present the article in an advertisement-like manner. The information I included is derived from various articles such as this one, about the company. It's worth noting that this company operates as both a for-profit and a benefits corporation. My primary goal is to accurately depict what they do and convey that essential aspect. Omitting this information would leave out a significant portion of their operations.
Considering this, I am open to suggestions on how to revise the article while retaining the crucial details about the company's structure and operations. If you have any specific ideas or guidance on how to achieve this, I am more than willing to incorporate them into the article to ensure a comprehensive yet balanced representation. Plumzorro (talk) 05:26, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, you may want to review articles on companies similar to MPOWERD to get an idea on how articles like this one are written. I did find an article on a company similar to this one, Constellation Energy. This company also deals in philanthropy similar to MPOWERD. Try to have the page split into several headers like Constellation, and expand your article. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 22:59, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

[edit]

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

A Signature [insert ominous pause]

[edit]

Hi (yet again) Urban Versis 32! I'd like it if you'd create a signature for me. I do not care what it looks like, so you can practice new techniques and the like while making it. ~~JustAnotherUndertaleFrantic~~ JustAnotherUndertaleFrantic (talk) 23:52, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @JustAnotherUndertaleFrantic. Nice to talk with you again! I created a signature. Here's the signature:
JustAnotherUndertaleFrantic -- Talk
I can further refine it if you wish. It's supposed to somewhat resemble the Undertale/Deltarune logo but with different text. It uses the same colors though!
If you want to use the signature as-is, copy and paste the following into your user appearance preferences and make sure you check the "wiki markup" box, otherwise it won't work:
<span style="background:black;font-family:CourierNew;color:#848484">[[User:JustAnotherUndertaleFrantic|<b style="color:#ffffff">JustAnotherUndertaleFrantic</b>]] -- [[User talk:JustAnotherUndertaleFrantic|<b style="color:#ea1c26">Talk</b>]]</span>
Hope you enjoy. Don't hesitate to message me if you have any questions or want to request any modifications to the signature. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 02:08, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! JustAnotherUndertaleFrantic -- Talk 21:55, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. If you want any symbols to be added like the lightning bolt in mine, I'm pretty sure any Unicode symbol should work in the signature.

Hello Urban Versis 32:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!

Userbox request

[edit]

Hey there! Hope you're doing alright, I came to you to ask for a Babel language userbox template, which I hope you can create for me. It should be for Mansi. Over on Wiktionary, I've already made them, but on here I'm a bit more scared of doing something bad so I would leave it to the professionals. Hope it can be worked out! Ewithu (talk) 19:27, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Of course! Please be advised that it may take a few days, as I am traveling, but I should have it done by this weekend. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 01:11, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Update: I've set up everything in Category:User mns so that you can add all languages. For now the user boxes are in English but I will look into copying over all of the Wiktionary Mansi Userboxes so they are actually in Mansi. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 21:41, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey so I might have screwed up, and the categories I created will be deleted in a week unless a page is in them. You should add the userbox that matches the level in which you speak Mansi to your userpage soon so that userbox doesn't get deleted. Later, if someone else wants to use another Mansi category then I will create that one. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 14:42, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've noticed these new sections talking about speedy deletion, thank you for the efforts though!
I've added the mns-1 to my userpage. Though I do not know if there is a place where anyone can translate the Babel template of a language to its language, like German and Hungarian has. Maybe Translatewiki, but I am even more unfamiliar with that. And most likely Mansi isn't supported over there. Ewithu (talk) 17:34, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I guess this {{Babel|xyz- template is depracated? Many other places use the {{#babel: instead, and I don't know how that works. Ewithu (talk) 18:34, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, according to Wikipedia:Babel#Instructions you can use the {{Babel|xx-1}} type template or you can use the userbox. Also, the mns-1 cat won't be deleted since you are in it. Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 22:32, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha, but apparently, it doesn't show a card with that if I use the mns-1. Ewithu (talk) 23:40, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

[edit]

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Text World Theory

[edit]

Hi Urban,

Thank you for reviewing my article- I was wondering if you could help me to understand in what way it feels like advertising and not from a neutral point of view? It's a subject I'm pretty excited about, so I'll be the first to acknowledge that this enthusiasm could have seeped into the writing!

I have posted a question on the tearoom so please feel no pressure to respond. I just thought I'd reach out to you since you are the one who rejected it. If you have any pointers to help me out, that would be perfect.

Thanks a million! Mr Blumenthal (talk) 19:48, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Of course! My main thing when I read this article is that it seemed to be written by an enthusiastic writer who, although with the best intentions, may have accidentally written the article from the viewpoint of someone who loves the topic. This seems to be exactly the case. I'm glad that you are interested in the topic and want to create the article! However, please try to write it from a neutral point of view. This basically means to make the article as close to a neutral encyclopedic article as possible. One of the best things I can recommend is to read articles similar to yours to understand how a good article in that category is written. I myself am not the most knowledgeable on your article's subject, so this is the best thing I can recommend. Another thing is that your article contains a few "buzzwords". I have seen articles that are much worse in terms of this, so this is not a huge concern. However, try to keep your article in as plain English as possible. I'd like to thank you for your enthusiasm in creating this article. It's great to have you in the Wikipedia community! My final word of advice is to try editing other articles to get a better feel of how the Wikipedia process works. The more experience, the better! If you have any further questions relating to the article or Wikipedia in general, please feel free reach out! Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 23:06, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much this is really helpful. I will have another go at drafting it and see if I can't put this feedback into place. Thank you so much for taking the time to get back to me :) Mr Blumenthal (talk) 06:34, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

[edit]

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Our current top scorers are as follows:

Competitors may submit work for the second round until the end of 28 April, and the third round starts 1 May. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs. As a reminder, competitors are strictly prohibited from gaming Wikipedia policies or processes to receive more points.

Further questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. The Reviewer Barnstar
Despite being a long-time editor, the AIM-174 air-to-air missile article was my first article submission proper. Thank you for taking the time to review and approve it, it made my day. MWFwiki (talk) 06:26, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request on 18:27:01, 13 August 2024 for assistance on AfC submission by MIG editor

[edit]

Hello. I am hoping to get guidance on how best to revise this entry to increase its chances of acceptance. Is the issue primarily with the quality of citations, or is there a more overarching concern about the general worthiness of the subject matter?

MIG editor (talk) 18:27, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MIG, thanks for reaching out. The primary issue with your article is that it is not written from a neutral point of view. The tone of your article makes it seem more like a promotional article or advertisement than an encyclopedic article. Also, as you were saying, the article may not qualify as a Wikipedia article. I would recommend reading both of the linked information articles and adjust your article accordingly. However, your citations are actually better than most I've seen in AfC articles and well improved from the first submission of your article, so good job on that! I would just focus on the NPOV and notability concerns I've outlined above. If you have further questions, feel free to ask! Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 23:27, 13 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Jan Chojnan is now accepted

[edit]

We obviously have a different view on this, and I am not surprised you are cautious as a probationary reviewer. We have a "job description" which is to accept any draft which we view as having a better than 50% chance of surviving an immediate deletion process. That's a personal call, and sometimes a tough one. As we gan experience we get ever closer to that ideal.

I feel it is better to let a borderline draft through than to push it back, but that's my view., though this one was above the borderline. For me the single fact thaty tipped my scales was that he wrote the first Fooian Dictionary, even though the references were not fully formed. Welcome aboard. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 14:57, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Tim! I appreciate the knowledge and insight. I try hard to review AfC articles as close to the criteria as possible, but sometimes I make mistakes and I love to learn from more experienced reviewers. Thank you so much again for the info! Urban Versis 32KB(talk / contribs) 19:40, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure we'll meet again, and next time it will be you who offers me some additional insight. Such is Wikipedia. Rememebr, we are only as good as our most recent review. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 15:39, 29 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!
