Haikou Tower
Hi Phil! Hope you are well and happy. Long time!
I wonder if Haikou Tower is really underway. I will check. The Guoxing biz district is really getting on. The image shows a few of the many buildings now on Guoxing.
Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:38, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Anna! Likewise. Long time indeed!
- The tower wouldn't be a surprise although as you well know such projects have a habit of stalling half way through. I would put on a deerstalker and take a surreptitious stroll by ...
- Best as always, Philg88 ♦talk 05:00, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
- Stalling? Not a chance. This is HNA and they have cash out the Wallizoona (Aussie term). I'm just not certain it even exists. But HNA is building everything on Guoxing -- tons of buildings. You would not recognize it. Google map it.
- Anyhow, stalling was that old situation before when loans were given out willy nilly (not an Aussie term) and the developer split with the loot. That doesn't happen today. Plus, the government settles for nothing short of fantastic success here. You know how I used to whine about all that. Today, the government is a superhero here. The city is fantastic and clean and modern. The Nandu has a seawall. Unused areas have been turned into parks. Existing parks renovated. Crummy areas wiped off the map and rebuilt. All markets redone. New, (way too many) plazas all over the place. The list goes on. Astonishing! It is really a great place to live. I do hope you come back to visit one day.
- So, I will definitely stroll over there with a camera and see what I can find. If you can dig up coords, that would be magic. I can't find the thing.
- My very best wishes,
- @Anna This Baidu article might help, there are lots of pics of buildings associated with HNA on Guoxing Avenue. Chinese WP also has an article on the avenue, albeit sub-stub standard.
- I do hope to make it back for a visit, maybe Spring next year.
- Take care and enjoy the rebuilt city!, Philg88 ♦talk 06:22, 19 May 2017 (UTC)
- See HNA Building and also, zh Wikipedia is blocked, so I cannot see that. I posted at article talk about how this thing probably doesn't exist. Thanks for the links, though. And it will be great to see you if you make it here. Best, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 06:26, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

Port port port
There is Haikou New Port which is old. There is now Haikou Port New Seaport which is new. (They were thinking of naming it "Haikou New Port Sea Port of Haikou Port of the Sea Port Corporation Concern Limited Company Group", but there is already a port named that.) :)
Anyhow, Haikou Port New Seaport may be part of South Port, the port west of Haikou. South Port, by the way, is the one that serves both Hainan Western Ring Railway and Hainan Western Ring High-Speed Railway. No wonder everyone is so confused.
I'm off to drink a bottle of port. A sudden craving. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:23, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

Can you help verify translations of articles from Chinese
Hello Philg88,
Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from Chinese to English Wikipedia?
This would involve evaluating a translated article on the English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original Chinese article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:
There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including Chinese , using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from Chinese. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.
If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:
- Taichung Municipal Taichung Industrial High School
- Taipei Base Design Center
- Taoyuan Sports Federation
All you have to do, is compare the English article to the Chinese article, and mark it "Pass" or "Fail" (templates {{Pass}} and {{Fail}} may be useful). (Naturally, if you feel like fixing an inaccurate translation and then marking it "Pass", that's even better, but it isn't required.)
If you can help, please let me know. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 22:26, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Mathglot: Thanks for the message. Sorry but I don't have the time to devote to your project right now. Best of luck with it though. Philg88 ♦talk 06:55, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

Restrictions on geographic data
Did you know about Restrictions on geographic data in China? Holy moly. I have been adding coords to articles and photos for years. I had no idea. I just noticed a difference between openstreetmaps and another googlemaps mirror's coords, and links brought me to that article. I sure hope I'm not in trouble. I only meant to help people find that concert hall etc. Thoughts? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 18:28, 8 June 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, I ran into this previously. Seems to be one of those "proscribed but unenforced" thingies that as you know are rife in China. I wouldn't worry too much, but if you see a drone following you ... Best, Philg88 ♦talk 07:03, 9 June 2017 (UTC)
- Phew. I'll remain here under the sofa for at least a couple of days to be sure. Cheers. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 07:06, 9 June 2017 (UTC)
This is to inform you that an attempt is being made to overturn an RfC that you commented on
This is to inform you that an attempt is being made to overturn an RfC that you commented on (2 RfCs, actually, one less than six months ago and another a year ago). The new RfC is at:
Specifically, it asks that "religion = none" be allowed in the infobox.
The first RfC that this new RfC is trying to overturn is:
- 15 June 2015 RfC: RfC: Religion infobox entries for individuals that have no religion.
The result of that RfC was "unambiguously in favour of omitting the parameter altogether for 'none' " and despite the RfC title, additionally found that "There's no obvious reason why this would not apply to historical or fictional characters, institutions etc.", and that nonreligions listed in the religion entry should be removed when found "in any article".
The second RfC that this new RfC is trying to overturn is:
- 31 December 2015 RfC: RfC: Religion in infoboxes.
The result of that RfC was that the "in all Wikipedia articles, without exception, nonreligions should not be listed in the Religion= parameter of the infobox.".
Note: I am informing everyone who commented on the above RfCs, whether they supported or opposed the final consensus. --Guy Macon (talk) 04:24, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

Access to deleted article
Hello!
I was using the article "Poker Probability (Texas Hold'em)" as study material for my high school project on combinatorics and its usage in various fields. Hello my friend. What are guidelines on this sort of thing? Many thanks and best wishes. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 07:09, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
- Hello to you my dear. Hainanese has no standard Romanization AFAIK and it doesn't really help anyone adding this type of info so I would say WP:INDISC applies and it should be left out. Best, Philg88 ♦talk 15:15, 4 August 2017 (UTC)

DNB attribution
With this edit (Revision as of 08:19, 31 January 2016) you removed the inline attribution requited by the guideline WP:Plagiarism. The Earwig's Copyvio Detector detects a 91.5% likelihood that most of the text was copied from the DNB article.
Can you remember, or look in your contribution history to see, if you have altered any other article to remove the attribution? If so please fix them. -- PBS (talk) 12:59, 14 August 2017 (UTC)

Regarding Chinese coordinates
Hi, thanks for adding coordinates in your edit (Special:Diff/615249910)! The only bad news about it is that your coordinates appear screwed up by Chinese obfuscation, namely GCJ-02(Google Map?). (Wikipedia's geodata all use WGS84.) Please consider cross-checking these coordinates on satellite imagery or with OSM. If the coordinates you got appear wrong, you can try feeding it through this gadget (or its web version). Thanks again. --Artoria2e5 contrib 05:11, 17 August 2017 (UTC)

Help reading a map
Can you tell me what this map says? I think it shows Yelu Dashi's moves from the falling Liao dynasty to Kedun to Emil to Balasaghun to Samarkand(?) and his new empire at the time of his death. It is valuable because his movements are hard to explain in prose. I hesitate to label it because I can't read it. The thing I guess is Samarkand or Qatwan has a zhong in it and 1142 instead of 1141. Thanks. Benjamin Trovato (talk) 21:33, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Benjamin Trovato and thanks for the message. Sorry, but it's been a while since I did any Chinese stuff so I can't really help. Good luck though in cracking the problem. Best, Philg88 ♦talk 04:36, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
Martin Pring and the East India Company
Hi, I am working on the wikiproject Bristol cleanup listing and started looking at the "dubious-discuss" tag on Martin Pring. I note you added the tag and a comment on the talk page back in Sept 2016. You suggest you have sources to support it - could you just change it?— Rod talk 20:02, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

{{Anthropocentric}}?
Hi, Phil, it seems you were the person who was handled to relocation of this template from {{Human-centric}} to {{Anthropocentric}} following a request from an IP editor to do so. I wanted to ask that this be reverted back to "Human-centric" (even though this is kind of a weird and maybe clumsy way of saying the same thing)... This is because although I completely agree that "anthropocentric" is the scientifically correct term be be using here, a sizable proportion of Wikipedia's readership just ain't gonna know what big long words like that which they have never seen before actually mean. "Human-centric", which makes me cringe a bit even to type it, strikes me as the word we really need to be using here: it isn't in any sense truly incorrect, it is just more "pedestrian" and I think that "anthropocentric" is overly recondite for template use. And yes, I know there is a link to the word "anthropocentric", but the odds of a casual reader not recognizing the tern & bothering to clink on that link I think you will agree are next to zero, and so the tag will be ignored. I have witnessed other editors actually type "human-centric" more than once when referring to this kind of problem, and have never yet seen anyone type "anthropocentric" on a talk page anywhere to express the sentiment summarized by this template. Could we get it turned back to "human-centric" again, even if it sounds wrong to the ears of scientists and other professionals? Our audience is not us, and we need to accommodate them as often as possible when it is reasonable to do so. I think this is probably one of those times. Thanks for considering my request! KDS4444 (talk) 02:36, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
- Hi KDS4444 and thanks for the message. My suggestion would be that you post a {{Requested move}} at the Template talk:Anthropocentric page echoing the above rationale. There seems to have been some discussion of which term to use and other editors may have different opinions on whether such a move should take place. If no one else comments after the requisite 7 day period, give me a shout and I will do the move. Best, Philg88 ♦talk 06:41, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
- I just checked on this— it looks like the request got one !vote of support not long after it was made 8 days ago, but nothing (either for or against) since. It was recently relisted, but I am not sure that even that is necessary, as there is no minimum amount of participation necessary for RM discussions and there has been no opposition at all since I first made the request. Do you think this is enough cause to perform the relocation back to Human-centric? (because it looks to me like it is, but I would be glad to know if you feel otherwise). Thanks! KDS4444 (talk) 23:15, 15 November 2017 (UTC)
- Hi again KDS4444. I agree no one seems opposed to the move but I suggest that you wait another 7 days as a courtesy to the editor who relisted it yesterday. Best, Philg88 ♦talk 06:13, 16 November 2017 (UTC)

Possibility of providing your input on a Peer Review for Regine Velasquez's entry
Hi Philg88,
I'm writing to ask whether you would consider having a look at the article. I'm aware that you've been involved with a few PRs before. I've given it a major rewrite and complete overhaul. I began working on the article late October when it looked like this and somehow ended up rewriting the whole thing and aiming for potentially FA. This isn't a process I've been through before, but I have been reading the reviews here in preparation, and am familiar with FAC demands. I would very much appreciate a fresh set of eyes and happily address any concerns you may have.
Thanks! Pseud 14 (talk) 13:34, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

- @Philg88: No no, still TAR from Kashmir to Arunachal − Tibet east, north and northwest of Sikkim. Xizang all the way 😊 Gherkinmad (talk) 00:43, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
- @Gherkinmad: Ah yes, I'd forgotten that map . Tibet top top left? That's Xinjiang, not Tibet surely? Philg88 ♦talk 20:51, 12 February 2018 (UTC)
- @Philg88: Ah yes sorry, it’s on the Bhutia page, but yes should definitely go on Sikkim somewhere as well. Gherkinmad (talk) 17:51, 12 February 2018 (UTC)
Hi Philg88. Just want to note that i have changed your two edits yesterday to Erith and Bess of Hardwick, as they were wrong. Henry VIII granted the former to the Dowager Countess of Shrewsbury who was alive at the same time as he ~ Bess's husband, the 6th Earl, died fortythree years after Henry. The 4th Earl was indeed also called George Talbot, and his second wife was also Elizabeth; confusing, i know. Happy days, LindsayHello 09:51, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
- Many thanks for that Lindsay, I appreciate the corrections. 'Tis a shame the English aristocracy lacked the imagination to come up with different names for their progeny - it would make identifying individuals so much easier! Best, Philg88 ♦talk 06:34, 1 March 2018 (UTC)
use of your image from CC Wikimedia
Dear philg88,
I am a scholar at the University of Edinburgh and I am publishing a paper on the 'Edinburgh Parthenon (National Monument of Scotland)' on Aevum, a printed Italian academic journal (http://aevum.vitaepensiero.it/).
I would like to include in the printed article your image from: [[2]]
I would credit your work as "by philg88, via Wikimedia Commons".
The journal editors have asked me to provide an authorization by the author. Would you be willing to write a very brief authorization that I can show to the editors?
My email is: matteo.zaccarini@ed.ac.uk
Many thanks,

- Hi Matteo and thanks for the message, which perplexed me somewhat since I have nothing to do with this file. The picture in question was taken by Mdbeckwith, who gives an email address on their user page where you can no doubt contact them. Good luck! Philg88 ♦talk 06:25, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

- Hi there Vaibhav (vvstic) and thanks for the message. Google Translate tells me that it says "Hello, I want to make a change in Wikipedia's page, how to do it? Would you please tell me about that?" Unless you are reasonably competent in the use of English I suggest you don't. Start off on your native language Wikipedia and learn your way around, I'm sure there are lots of other editors who would be willing to help you. Good luck!! Philg88 ♦talk 06:21, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
About location maps
Can you help make some location maps of China's provinces? Like "File:Location map China Hunan EN.svg", it can show places within the maps if fill in the latitude and longitude. Now Wikipedia only has the location maps of Beijing, Shanghai, Gansu, Guangdong, Hainan, Hubei, Hunan, Qinghai, Shandong, Sichuan, Yunnan, Fujian, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Hong Kong, and Macau.--Huangdan2060 (talk) 00:30, 26 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hi there Huangdan2060 and thanks for the message. I don't spend as much time on Wikipedia as I used to due to other commitments so I'm afraid creating other location maps of China is not something I would want to undertake given the time and effort involved. All the best, Philg88 ♦talk 06:38, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Phil, it's been a while! I also took a long break from Wikipedia, but could not resist the joy of writing and returned a few months ago :). I recently stumbled upon a Jiangxi svg map File:Jiangxi.svg. Would it be relatively easy to turn that into a location map? I have no idea how much work it entails so don't worry about it if it's too time-consuming. Cheers, -Zanhe (talk) 20:12, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Zanhe, nice to hear from you and I trust all is well with you. The map you suggest would be very difficult if not impossible to turn into a location map. In a nutshell, to create a location map you have to know the latitude and longitude of the top right hand corner and all the data has to be proportionally relevant to that. This is why it takes a lot of work to create one, as you have to start with the raw OSM data and turn that into an SVG, which takes a ton of effort and a whole bunch of tools. I suppose you could always ask for these maps at the map workshop but I don't know how responsive that is now. All the best, Philg88 ♦talk 06:53, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. I had no idea there's so much difference between a location map and a plain map. Never mind then. As for the map workshop, I'm pretty sure I requested there once or twice before, and nothing came out of it. Maybe Wikimedia should use the donations they get to hire some professionals to do things like this. -Zanhe (talk) 14:18, 29 April 2018 (UTC)

Ways to improve Kittatinny Mountains
Hi, I'm Markdask. Philg88, thanks for creating Kittatinny Mountains!
I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. This remains a stub
The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

- Hi there markdask and thanks for the message. I didn't create the page, I moved it following a request at WP:RMT. No problem though and thanks for your efforts to improve Wikipedia. Cheers, Philg88 ♦talk 16:33, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- Yeah inadvertant, I curated it so the message was automatic. The curation toolbar has a mind of its own MarkDask 00:30, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

Bad move
There is no way this should have been called "uncontroversial". I hope you are more careful these days. Johnbod (talk) 12:57, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
- Hi there, Johnbod If you're unhappy about something that has gone unchallenged for 2 1/2 years then I suggest you start a move discussion at the appropriate talk page. Philg88 ♦talk 06:54, 7 July 2018 (UTC)
- No, I can't be bothered, but I do want to urge not to make the same mistake these days. As you probably know, the fact that a change to an obscure page like this "has gone unchallenged for 2 1/2 years" means virtually nothing. Johnbod (talk) 16:19, 7 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Philg88. Are you still using User:Philg88/uw-tilde. Was it a sandbox? Checking because it's polluting the category. If it's something you no longer need, perhaps we can delete it? Thanks. --Bsherr (talk) 16:44, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

EB1911 attribution
With Revision as of 07:45, 21 February 2016 to Ponce Denis Écouchard Lebrun with the editorial comment "References: Tweak ref" you altered {{EB1911}}
to {{cite EB1911}}
in doing so you removed the attribution (see WP:FREECOPYING):
{{EB1911}}
: This article incorporates text from a publication now in the public domain: "Lebrun, Ponce Denis Écouchard". Encyclopædia Britannica (11th ed.). 1911.{{cite EB1911}}
: . Encyclopædia Britannica (11th ed.). 1911.
However if you had run the Earwig's Copyvio Detector you would have seen that there was 77.6% chance that the text was copied from EB1911.
Have you made this change to the EB1911 template to may more articles? -- PBS (talk) 14:31, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
- Hi PBS and thanks for the message. I made the change to suppress the Harv reference error and as far as I recall there shouldn't be many similar edits. I will check my edit history around the same time and make any necessary corrections. Best, Philg88 ♦talk 08:54, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
{{EB1911}}
includes the parameter ref=. For such cases enter ref=none, however that is not usually desirable as one should usually either link short inline citations to it, or change it into an inline citation with the parameter inline=y

Dear Philg88,
I'd like to extend a cordial invitation to you to join the Ten Year Society, an informal group for editors who've been participating in the Wikipedia project for ten years or more.
Two years overdue! Congratulations, old friend. It's been a long time. I hope you are well. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 13:43, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
- Hello, old friend, nice to hear from you! Thank you for the kind invitation, which I graciously accept. Hope all is good with you. Philg88 ♦talk 08:16, 14 January 2019 (UTC)
A tag has been placed on Baby Doll (Kanika Kapoor, Meet Bros Anjjan and Kunal Avanti song) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:
Not Useful! Separate Article is already there - Baby Doll (2014 song)
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, pages that meet certain criteria may be deleted at any time.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here.
