History of Philadelphia

I see you have put in quite a bit of time a few years ago in the History of Philadelphia article! I am proposing a bit of an update/re-write/copy edit to bring it up to speed from when it received GA status around 4 years ago. Any input would be appreciated! nf utvol (talk) 12:47, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion, guidelines for use at WP:MINOR). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and all users will still be able to manually mark their edits as being minor in the usual way.

For well-established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 20:12, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

GA mentor

Hi there! I noticed that your name is down as a good article mentor. I recently completed my first GA review yesterday, Wighard, and was wondering whether you might be able to check it out and perhaps, if you have the time, monitor my future progress or the lack thereof! No problem if you're too busy at the moment. The next article I was thinking about tackling is History of the horse in Britain. Thanks a lot in advance. Clint Eastwood

Loving the newimage BTW. Well done! Loved the 170 quotes too, miserable git!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:39, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

I saw that image on one of the author's profiles I work with and he graciously allowed us to use it. He said it was the first time Eastwood had been to the festival in 20 years, so fortunately we got a better pose than this one. The video took forever to pull together and I'm bummed that it came out in such a small screen size. I'll try better next time, but so far people seem to like it. I'll give the PR a few more days and then I'll start asking some other editors to assist in copyediting. If you have anybody feel free to ask them. --Happy editing! I am sorry, but I don't have time to copyedit the Clint Eastwood article. By the way, I recall peer reviewing the Oklahoma City bombing article, but don't recall copyediting it in any meaningful way. Thanks for asking and my apologies. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:29, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Eastwood

I'll look later. I'm still not convinced it is FA worthy, but looks to be a LOT better than many of our other FA actor articles so it might pass, dunno. I mean look at the Eric Bana and Emma Watson articles!♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:23, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

Just given it a read and have added some details I thought important. Better. Virtually featured quality up until 1995 I think. It tends to go downhill from there I think... I think it needs a lot more work on the 2000s and his directing and themes to reach FA. I'll look into this this week. I think it needs many more hours of work and research from myself if we are to be serious about this passing.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:46, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Merced Sun-Star.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Merced Sun-Star.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Hi there, hope you can help

Hi, it concerns the Queen article. Noticed that you have uploaded material on their page previously. I was wondering if you could help as an image of Queen at Live Aid would be most helpful, as that is the one section of the article that is empty. As one of the things they are known best for, i thought it would be great if an image could go alongside the text in the article. I have searched for some images of Freddie Mercury on stage looking out toward the stadium audience... #1.( http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_k9YRGIDlJZw/TENLcU57SzI/AAAAAAAADhI/61Beh9gDwGk/s1600/mercrury-live-aid.jpg ), #2.( http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_nKB1qzhZoNI/RiYbszAGr-I/AAAAAAAAABM/MfGADc5Pt8g/s1600/queen+live+aid+1985.jpg ), #3.( http://georgesjournal.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/live_aid_queen.jpg ), #4.( http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ed3ErPraWUA/TS8S7Rj2msI/AAAAAAAAAAk/cyOeYRPhbpI/s1600/liveaid+3.png ), #5.{http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://i3.ytimg.com/vi/E5d9fP6ASGo/0.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.remusicas.org/videos/queen-live-aid-part-2-25-%3BMfYcKNqQoJo.html&usg=__rB0lmtoMBNZuo4VmVK7FFMmjxyU=&h=360&w=480&sz=17&hl=en&start=22&zoom=1&tbnid=cluO5qdD-wuh9M:&tbnh=123&tbnw=167&ei=pending&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dlive%2Baid%2BQUEEN%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26rlz%3D1R2PRFA_enGB429%26biw%3D1345%26bih%3D552%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=250&page=2&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:22&tx=102&ty=47 ) ... i wouldn't have any idea of how an image is uploaded, or the copyright involved, or explaining rational for its use. San Diego Zoo

At the risk of inciting holy war (which questions about referencess seem to frequently do), I'd like some clarification on the changes you made in References for the San Diego Zoo article. My understanding from WP:CITE and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (layout)#Notes and References is that "Bibliography" is generally for use in listing the works of a particular author in an article about that author, and that the general preference is for Notes or Footnotes for citations and References for general references about a subject. In WP:CITE, the word "Bibliography" does not appear in this context at all, and the page itself uses the previous format used in the San Diego Zoo article. Thank you for any clarification. Don Lammers (talk) 00:45, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for the quick reply. In articles where I am doing a lot of editing, I generally try to eliminate references in favor of specific citations, unless I have multiple page references where I have used Harvard short citations and those link to the book reference. In this case the references have been there for a while, and I don't have access to determine page numbers (if applicable), so I have just left it alone. I think for now I will leave it as is, until syuch time as I can check the citations in detail and expand as necessary. Don Lammers (talk) 01:04, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

Good article question

Hello Nehrams, I was looking at Wikipedia:Good article nominations/Mentors and I noticed your name. I do have one question. Currently I have been working on Love Always and I would like to have it promoted to a GA. One of my concerns is criterion 3. My question is could you take a quick look at the article and tell me if you think this article covers that criterion. I would really appreciate it!

Some Questions

Hi Nehrams2020,

I am writing regarding the Snow Prince article you reviewed recently. Do you know where can I find "a few more editors to take a look at (the page)", as you suggested? I don't think many people would have come across this page, much less experienced editors. And as this is my first time I will be nominating an article for the GA-class review, do you have any suggestions for me? Anyway, many thanks for reviewing this article. Hope to work with you again! --Lionratz (talk) 12:52, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

HELP (sorry for shouting!!)

I have used a photo from the San Diego Air and Space Museum photo archives to illustrate an article on the Curtiss JN-4, which is labelled "Hennessey Monoplane" while two other photos that look exactly like the first aircraft are only labeled "possible Hennessey" and again "possible Hennessey". The crux of the problem is that another editor has challenged that the second and third images are Hennessey Monoplanes and has already removed the image from the Curtiss JN-4 article, and when replaced, tagged them as [citation needed]. Can you clear this up, either clearly identifying the last two images as a Hennessey Monoplane which it is, or simply add the notation to the first image that it is a "modified Jenny" which note appears on the last two images. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 01:23, 7 September 2011 (UTC).

Here is the link to the controversy over "is it a modified JN-4?" FWiW Bzuk (talk) 01:46, 7 September 2011 (UTC).
The issue is not whether or not the images are of a Hennessey Monoplane" which I am quite willing to accept that they are. My concern is that a claim is being made that the image this aircraft should be added to the Curtiss JN-4 article because it is also "modified JN-4". I have objected to doing this unless and until a reliable source to support that claim has been provided. All that I have asked for is that either a reliable, independent, and verifiable source be cited to support the claim that the image is of a "modified JN-4", or that the image and text to that effect be deleted from the article as unsupported. Anything else is a straw man and not an issue that I have raised. Centpacrr (talk) 03:33, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the assessment - which parts of grammar and style, or referencing and citation, were problematic? Please respond on article talk - thanks again. --Lexein (talk) 22:31, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Research into the user pages of Wikipedians: Invitation to participate

Greetings,

My name is John-Paul and I am a student with the University of Alberta specializing in Communications and Technology.

I would like to include your Wikipedia user page in a study I am doing about how people present themselves online. I am interested in whether people see themselves in different ways, online and offline. One of the things I am looking at is how contributors to Wikipedia present themselves to each other through their user pages. Would you consider letting me include your user page in my study?

With your consent, I will read and analyze your user page, and ask you five short questions about it that will take about ten to fifteen minutes to answer. I am looking at about twenty user pages belonging to twenty different people. I will be looking at all user pages together, looking for common threads in the way people introduce themselves to other Wikipedians.

I hope that my research will help answer questions about how people collaborate, work together, and share knowledge. If you are open to participating in this study, please reply to this message, on your User Talk page or on mine. I will provide you with a complete description of my research, which you can use to decide if you want to participate.

Thank-you,

John-Paul Mcvea

Thank-you for agreeing to participate in my study

Thank-you for agreeing to participate in my study, entitled “Online Self-presentation among Wikipedians.” I appreciate it.

As I indicated in my last message, here are five short questions about your user page that I would like you to answer. These will help me to understand your motivations for creating a user page such as yours. Please be as brief or as thorough as you like.

5 QUESTIONS

1. Are you a member of social networks such Facebook or MySpace?

2. In addition to maintaining a user page in Wikipedia, have you also written or edited articles? If so, about how many times?

3. What are the key messages about yourself that you hope to convey with your user page?

4. Have your Wikipedia contributions ever received feedback, such as being edited by others or commented on? Have you received a message from another Wikipedia user? If so, do you think your user page positively or negatively affected what other people said and how they said it?

5. Do you see your “online self” as being different from your “offline self?” Can you elaborate?

Please indicate your answers to these questions on your talk page, or on mine. Please respond by October 1st so that I have time to properly read your responses. If you like, you can email your answers to me instead (jmcvea@ualberta.ca).

Thank you again : )

Study Procedures

• With your consent, I will analyze the language of your user page and gather basic statistics such as the count of words, the frequency of words, the number of sections, and so on.

• I will also read the text of your user page, looking for elements in common with ads posted by other people. I will note whether you include a picture, or links to other content on the internet.

• I ask you to answer my five questions, above. This will take about ten to fifteen minutes to complete. I will ask you to answer the questions within a week, and send your answers to me.

• Throughout my research, I will adhere to the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of Human Research Participants, which you can view at http://www.uofaweb.ualberta.ca/gfcpolicymanual/policymanualsection66.cfm

Images

Hi Nehrams, thank you very much for all you have done adding images to articles and putting in requests. It's valuable work. I notice you have often added them to list sections such as awards or filmographies. Usually images are added to the main body of the article, placed on the left if they face is pointing right, and right if the face is pointing left. It's a just a small thing but I think it helps. Happy editing. Span (talk) 10:23, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Yes, I always favour right alignment too, when possible. I take your point about spreading out images. I think it's just a list thing - images seem to illustrate prose. Have a great weekend. Happy editing. Span (talk) 02:32, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I am doing my first GA review at David Mirkin. The article is very well sourced but in my opinion it is a clear fail based on serious prose and MOS issues. However, since it is my first time doing a review, I would greatly appreciate it if you could glance at the article, and my GA review comments, and give me some feedback. Am I being too hard on these wonderful editors who have worked so hard to expand and cite this BLP? Or am I on the right track? Your feedback is appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Image files on other language Wikipedias

Hi, I tried looking for a file, that is uploaded on English language Wikipedia, from Italian language Wikipedia, and I could not find it. Help

Hello Nehrams.

I have recently reviewd two articles which were pending under the WP:GAN nominations table. They are Friends with Benefits and Jud Süß. I failed the former on the criteria of "Lack of broad coverage on the film, which in turn leads to a small article size". I put the latter on hold for some time to iron out a few flaws, but later passed it as it seems to pass all the GA criteria and is a well-written, reasonably detailed and factually correct article. I would like to know whether I have committed any error regarding these decisions. I am new to GA reviewing, though I have been an editor for quite a while and hence I feel familiar with most WP basics. In case any fault or shortcoming is found in my reviews or decisions, please point it out. AnkitBhattTalk to me!!LifEnjoy 17:30, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Nehrams2020 ,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.11.206.39 (talk) 03:26, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Timothy Beach Blackstone edit

I just removed the reference to Timothy Beach Blackstone funding the Christian Zionist projects of his cousin, Rev. William E. Blackstone, based on the reliability of the listed reference. The "Smokers History" website listed as the source is hardly reputable. The home page is a rant about "Nazi pseudo-science" and "terrorism" (titled "The Conspiracy Against Tobacco) meant to decieve the public into believing that smoking contributes to cancer and heart disease (www.smokershistory.com). Neither the biography of William Blackstone on the website of the evangelical Christian organization which is the successor to his Chicago Hebrew Mission (http://www.lifeinmessiah.org/gleb.php), nor the 1917 biography of Timothy Blackwell (http://www.archive.org/stream/biographytimoth00hinmgoog#page/n7/mode/2up) corroborate the "Smokers History" claim. "Smokers History" does not source the claim, either (http://www.smokershistory.com/Blacksto.htm).

If you scroll down to the bottom of the "Smokers History" home page, you find: "We must have REVENGE! REVENGE! REVENGE! for everything they've done to us! Never forgive and never forget their crimes!"

Click on "Links & Misc." and you're taken to a page titled, "Constitution of the Bloodsucker Dictatorship of Anti-Smoker Faggot Land (Formerly known as America)." Despite the -- I'm sure entirely unintended -- irony of using the word "faggot" (British slang for a cigarette) with "anti-smoker," I trust I've made the point as to why this reference and its inclusion in the article were removed.

If you could run me through it I'd really appreciate it, as it would make future editions a lot easier for me to tackle. Thanks for any help you can provide. GRAPPLE X 22:52, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

The best way to deliver the newsletter, I found, is User:EdwardsBot. You need an admin to get your name added to the access list and from there you can look through the edit history on the spam page and use my previous edit as a template for the new letter. --Peppageಠ_ಠ 02:08, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Believe me it wasn't effortless. I always used AWB but that required manually doing each edit for every member (although it did save some time with the automation). Peppage is right in recommending one of the bots, you just need to find one and provide the newsletter to send out and they'll take care of the rest. I'm glad to see that the newsletter is still being distributed. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 04:02, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Clint Eastwood

Hi, User talk:Jprw keeps removing the info about the CIncenatta studio and the Andalucian village being where the films were shot. I think its important to mention the Spanish location and the studio which is famous in Italian cinema and is relevant to his biography given that he spent 11 weeks there. Apparently he also thinks his highest grossing films and Dirty Harry films are not worthy of mentioning in the lead. Any thoughts?♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:13, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Arnold Schwarzenegger filmography

Hi Nehrams,

Great job with getting Arnold Schwarzenegger filmography up to featured list status! I have nominated the article to go up on the main page in the Today's Featured List section. Some concerns about the article have been raised here. If you are willing to help address these concerns, it would be greatly appreciated.

GA reviewer

Hello, I have a small isuue I ould like to query about. I have noticed that a few Indian films articles have been upgraded to a GA status, mainly Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu and Rockstar. The main problems I have noticed about these articles is the fact that they are relatively low on content and therefor they don't cover all aspects on the film as it is require for a GA and secondly, the review himself has been making large copy-editing work and fixing some of the issues he himself has pointed out in the review. So my question,, is that legitimate? --Meryam90 (talk) 11:52, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Credo Reference Update & Survey (your opinion requested)

Credo Reference, who generously donated 400 free Credo 250 research accounts to Wikipedia editors over the past two years, has offered to expand the program to include 100 additional reference resources. Credo wants Wikipedia editors to select which resources they want most. So, we put together a quick survey to do that:

It also asks some basic questions about what you like about the Credo program and what you might want to improve.

At this time only the initial 400 editors have accounts, but even if you do not have an account, you still might want to weigh in on which resources would be most valuable for the community (for example, through WikiProject Resource Exchange).

Also, if you have an account but no longer want to use it, please leave me a note so another editor can take your spot.

If you have any other questions or comments, drop by my talk page or email me at wikiocaasi@yahoo.com. Cheers! Ocaasi t | c 17:26, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Main Page appearance

Hello! This is a note to let the main editors of the article Arnold Schwarzenegger filmography know that it will be appearing as the main page featured list on July 30, 2012. You can view the TFL blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured list/July 30, 2012. If you think it is necessary to change the main date, you can request it with the featured list directors The Rambling Man (talk · contribs), Dabomb87 (talk · contribs) or Giants2008 (talk · contribs), or at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured list. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions of the suggested formatting. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page so Wikipedia doesn't look bad. :D Thanks! Tbhotch. Grammatically incorrect? Correct it! See terms and conditions. 20:34, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Photo request

Hi, Nehrams! In the past you have sometimes taken pictures on request, around the San Diego area. Any chance you could get a picture of the Saint Joseph Cathedral, at 1535 Third Avenue in the downtown San Diego area? Some of us are trying to expand that article. Thanks for any help! --MelanieN (talk) 14:39, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Also while your at the cathedral could you take a picture of the coat of arms of the Bishops of San Diego on the side of the building. They should be on the side facing the parking lot if I remember correctly. If we have the color images of their coat of arms we can make svg versions. Spongie555 (talk) 19:06, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
If you're coming downtown anyhow, would you like to get a picture of the new rainbow flag at the corner of Normal Street and University Avenue in Hillcrest? If it's out of the way for you don't worry about it, but there are a couple of articles where I could use it. Thanks so much! --MelanieN (talk) 05:35, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject Good articles (Participant Clean-Up)

Hello, you are receiving this message because you are currently a participant of WikiProject Good articles. Since the creation of the WikiProject, over 200 user's have joined to help review good article nominations and contribute to other sections of the WikiProject. Over the years, several of these users have stopped reviewing articles and/or have become inactive with the project but are still listed as participates. In order to improve communications with other participants and get newsletters sent out faster (newsletters will begin to be sent out monthly starting in October) all participants that are no longer active with the WikiProject will be removed from the participants list.

If you are still interested in being a participant for this WikiProject, please sign your user name here and please help review some articles so we can reduce the size of the backlog. If you are no longer interested, you do not need to sign your name anywhere and your name will be removed from the participants list after the deadline. Gliese 581 d and 55 Cancri e: "good articles"

Gliese 581 d is B class and Mid importance. There are now doubts that the planet even exists. That would lower its importance. The question of existence is important, but that question would go to the Gliese 581 article.

55 Cancri e is a GA (good article) and Low importance. I think that it is still good, but it has changed since the last sweep in 2009; it needs to be verified. Also should be raised to Mid level importance.

Need help at La Playa Trail

Hi, Nehrams! A couple of us who are clueless about images need help making an illustration for the article La Playa Trail. We don't need you to go out and take pictures, which I know is time consuming and hard for you to schedule; we just need to know how to magnify a Commons image so as to make a new file out of the magnified view. You can read the discussion here: User talk:Dohn joe#Nice work!. There is a nice 1857 map [3] at Commons, and if magnified it would nicely show the trail we are talking about. The trail runs from the settlement (at Old Town) down through Point Loma along the bay to La Playa. It is clearly visible on magnification. Is this something you would know how to do? Thanks for any help or advice! --MelanieN (talk) 17:55, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Even better, there is this [4] which is supposedly from the US Boundary Survey 1850, found at the website La Playa Trail Association; if it really is an old government image I believe we could use it, but again I don't know how to make it acceptable to Commons. --MelanieN (talk) 18:00, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Oops!

Hi, Nehrams! I just created an article about the California Quadrangle in Balboa Park, including the California Building and California Tower. Then when I looked at "what links here" I discovered that you had already written a virtually complete article on the same subject here: Wikipedia:GLAM/BP/To-do/California Building (Balboa Park). I didn't mean to be reinventing the wheel, much less stepping on somebody else's article - sorry! I see a lot of good stuff in your article that could be transferred into the Quadrangle article, or yours could be moved into mainspace virtually as it is - the California Building is certainly deserving of its own article! and there is a lot of material here not duplicated in my new article. How would you like to handle it? --MelanieN (talk) 04:15, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

GA queary

Hi there i was wondering if you could give me some help when nominating an article for GA on a talkpage.

I know after topic=, i put the subtopic, such as Art and architecture, but im not sure what to put after page=, do i put the number 1 or do i leave this blank, if so does it do it automatically when i save the page. Sorry for being a bore, but ive never nominated or reviewed a article before and would very much like to start, thankyou, Mary92.40.219.180 (talk) 10:38, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello, I'm happy to see you're eager to help improve an article to GA status. I don't think the nomination needs the page number, but if it's not updating, then use 1, if that's the article's first nomination. If the article has been nominated more than once, then the page number changes to a new review page. Let me know if you need further clarification. --Happy editing! I'm not sure If I did the citations correctly. Could you check the first two citations to make sure that I haven't missed anything?. Thank you for your help. Kudos on the new pic. (Man, I just gotta get a digital SLR so I can compete with you guys!) Happy New Year. Nightscream (talk) 17:17, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Dude, just go to Comic-Con! I mean, you're right there in San Diego! The New York Comic-Con is where I get the largest number of my pics at one time (I uploaded 482 pics from the one in October, and had to divide those into three different pages). Otherwise, I just go to book signings at Midtown Comics, which are mostly for comics creators, but also have some celebs here and there. The great thing is that because I cover the New York Comic Con for Wikipedia, they give me a free press pass for the entire weekend, so you could try doing that with San Diego. Question about foreign films

To: User talk:Erik. Hello. Are you the head of the Wikipedia Film Projects? If so, I have a question for you. If not, do you know who is? Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 17:36, 4 May 2011 (UTC))

Erik's currently on a WikiBreak right now. If you have a general question, you could consider dropping a line at WT:FILM or consider asking one of the project's members who work on foreign films. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 01:20, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Surfs upmp.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Surfs upmp.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:20, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

Please see Talk:No worries/GA2.

You originally reviewed this article and passed it for GA.

It has not principally changed since then, yet its status is being challenged by a user who does not understand the use of secondary sources I used or the amount of research I did to gather plenty of secondary sources, virtually none of them coming from Australia, therefore the sources do not provide any sort of "Australia perspective" only but rather a good worldview perspective.

Can you help somehow advise me how to proceed?

WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:
  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with, the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
  • Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.--Dom497 (talk)

WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. GA review review

Hi there. I've recently completed a few GA reviews, and while they aren't my first reviews, they are my first reviews in a couple of years. I decided to follow the suggestion on the WP:GAN/I page to ask a more experienced reviewer (from the mentors page) to take a look and offer some thoughts. If you wouldn't mind taking a peek at any or all of my reviews for Talk:Charles Critchfield/GA1, Talk:Emilio G. Segrè/GA1, and Talk:Moment of inertia/GA3, I'd love to have some feedback. I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 02:48, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive

Hello! A GAN Backlog Drive will begin in less than 4 days!

In past Backlog Drives, the goal was to reduce the backlog of Good article nominations. In the upcoming drive, another goal will be added - raising as much money as we can for the Wikimedia Foundation. How will this work? Well, its pretty simple. Any user interested in donating can submit a pledge at the Backlog Drive page (linked above). The pledge should mention the amount of money the user is willing to donate per review. For example, if a user pledges 5 cents per review and 100 nominations are reviewed, the total donation amount is $5.00.

At the time this message was sent out, two users have submitted pledges for a total of 8 cents per review. All pledges, no matter how much money, are greatly appreciated. Also, in no way is this saying you must make a pledge.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or leave a message on the Backlog Drive talk page. And remember, there are less than 4 days before the drive starts!--EdwardsBot (talk) 03:10, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Nehrams2020, I am Sebastian Wallroth from Berlin, Germany, board member of Wikimedia Deutschland. I am visiting San Diego from February 3rd to February 8th, happily invited to a wedding. I would like to meet Wikipedians. Is there a chance for a Wiki Meetup in San Diego during the first week in February? --Sebastian Wallroth (talk) 15:25, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

March 2014 GAN Backlog Drive

It's that time again! Starting on March 1, there will be another GAN Backlog Drive! There will be several changes compared to previous drives:

  • This drive will introduce a new component to it; a point system. In a nutshell, older nominations are worth more points than newer nominations. The top 3 participants who have the points will be awarded the Golden, Silver, or Bronze Wikipedia Puzzle Piece Trophy, respectively.
  • Unlike the December 2013 Backlog Drive, earning an additional barnstar if you reached your goal has been removed.
  • The allowance to have insufficient reviews has been lowered to 2 before being disqualified.
  • An exception to the rule that all reviews must be completed before the deadline has been created.

Also, something that I thought I would share with all of you is that we raised $20.88 (USD) for the WMF in the December 2013 drive. It may not sound like a lot but considering that that was raised just because we reviewed articles, I would say that's pretty good! With that success, pledges can be made for the upcoming drive if you wish.

More info regarding the drive and full descriptions regarding the changes to this drive can be found on the the drive page. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a message on the drive talk page.

I look forward to your participation and hope that because of it, some day the backlog will be gone!

An RfC that you may be interested in...

As one of the previous contributors to {{Infobox film}} or as one of the commenters on it's talk page, I would like to inform you that there has been a RfC started on the talk page as to implementation of previously deprecated parameters. Your comments and thoughts on the matter would be welcomed. Happy editing!

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to NATOPS may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
