Acacia occurrence data maps
[edit]Hi @Hughesdarren: I have just put up some more occurrence data maps for Acacia at Category:Acacia distribution maps. I created them all some time ago and was hoping you might go the extra mile in
1. using the crop tool in the commons to crop out all the white space, (you need to use the crop tool to preserve the descriptions, captions, categories)
2. uploading some of them to your articles, and
3. if you are really enthusiastic, uploading them to wikidata using the property "taxon range map image".
I do have maps for all Australian acacias except those having fewer than 20? 8? georeferenced specimens. So let me know what ones you need, as I am only alerted when you create an article for an NT acacia... MargaretRDonald (talk) 22:00, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks Margaret, will take a look when creating or updating more Acacia articles. Cheers. Hughesdarren (talk) 23:02, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020
[edit]Hello Hughesdarren,
- Source Guide Discussion
The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.
- Redirects
New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.
- Discussions and Resources
- There is an ongoing discussion around changing notifications for new editors who attempt to write articles.
- A recent discussion of whether Michelin starred restraunts are notable was archived without closure.
- A resource page with links pertinent for reviewers was created this month.
- A proposal to increase the scope of G5 was withdrawn.
- Refresher
Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

More Acacia distribution maps
[edit]Hi @Hughesdarren:. I have now put up all my Acacia occurrence data maps from f onwards, using Pattypan. You can find them at Category:Acacia distribution maps. The ones which need cropping are generally those which have not yet been used in a wikipedia. Hope this helps. MargaretRDonald (talk) 12:47, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
Important Question
[edit]Hey, @Hughesdarren:. Do you realise that your 'Special Barnster' which was awarded to you by Celebi12 is meant to be offensive? It says:
- "Thanks for setting a new record in reverting my perfectly good edits. I hope you feel satisfied in erasing my years of hard work and research. Good f**king day."... You might want to remove it from your trophy cabinet...

Dazzle Dazzle
[edit]Hi, based on your words, “ Artist doesn't have an article.” I’m sorry but please do your research before requesting for speedy deletions or jumping to random conclusions. Dazzle Dazzle is by the group Weki Meki which literally have an article and with the benefit of the doubt, let’s say you didn’t know them, however, this doesn’t justify your “artist doesn't have an article” as clearly in Dazzle Dazzle, there are links to the artist article, Weki Meki themselves. There is no need for a speedy deletion so thank you and please not only care about BTS or whatsoever and take a look around the world and other artist.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have any queries. Thanks. Coolbruh123 (talk) 10:49, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
Acacia distribution maps - yet again
[edit]Hi @Hughesdarren:. I discovered that I had NOT put up all (972) the Acacia maps, created so long ago (2010-12-08). I believe I have now uploaded them. I found out 59 were missing when using "Quick Statements" to add the maps to wikidata. However, now all my uploaded maps have also been uploaded to wikidata and the easiest way to find them is to use the wikidata item next to the article and copy the filename from there. Most need cropping and the croptool in wikimedia is nice in that one does not have to upload all the descriptive stuff again. One just replaces the file... Deletion on my Page : Central Park Tours
[edit]Hey, I'm just wondering whats the reason for requesting deleting of my page Central Park Tours. I used to work for this company for 5years and I just decided to make a page in wikipedia about them, since they are one of the main companies in Central Park for Bike/Pedicab tours and they help the community. Also this company have been around 17 years. If you can give me tip about how to make this page better for Wikipedia I would appreciate it! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zdravkoivanov999 (talk • contribs) 22:20, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Habari! According to my views the article does not deserve fast deletion label; The subject is notable in Tanzania, and the user:Pellagia Njau intended to translate the Swahili page of Meena Ally to English and link the two pages, at least we should welcome fore more edition of few mistakes and addition of missing info. Good morning! (my time)
I just wanted to touch in about the Piers Park article you reviewed the other day. I had been working on the East Boston page, which has a template at the top suggesting that it might be appropriate to spin off articles from the rather cumbersome and overloaded page.
As a young editor on WP, I don't know the form for doing this. Would it be possible for you to give it some attention, so I can see how it might be done? What is the process? Is any element automated? Does it have to go through a period of review?
I'm going to say... I think that was the equivalent of article number 5 for me. If there are issues regarding conformity to WP policy, please let me know. Thanks. Sicklemoon (talk) 14:20, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
- Hi, Piers Park was a good article - well done. If you can write more just like it on other East Boston topics that would be great too. Don't worry about starting an new article they all get curated at some point so long as you have some reliable source to back up what you are saying everything else can be fixed as you go along. Any issues an other editors will let you you know soon enough. Keep up the good work and drop me a line or ping me if you need a hand. Regards Hughesdarren (talk) 02:55, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
Excellent. I would like to (and I will) go after a few more topics for East Boston. "Any issues other editors will let you you know soon enough" You made me laugh. Very true! Happily, I do not (yet) have an egotistical investment in... the majority of what I write! Just trying to improve what's up there.
I will say--the two notices at the top of the East Boston page were not very clear for me as a new editor. Yes, I could understand why they had been put there. Certainly there was "intricate detail" up on the page, as it stood when I first read it, and the organization was not great. But when those notices (should I call them templates?) could or should be removed was less clear to me.
I would like to help get the article into good shape so those templates/notices can be removed. Could you recommend a well organized page on a similar topic that might serve as a model? Thanks (and thanks in any case, appreciate the work on your end. Sicklemoon (talk) 16:12, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
- Most of the important manual of style stuff in general terms is here: Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout. I'm more of a monkey see-monkey do kind of person so if you look at an article with no tags such as Fenway–Kenmore has done then you can't go far wrong. Don't be afraid to experiment a bit and like I said before if other editors are unhappy with it they will let you know. You could also cut and pate the article into your sandbox and experiment with it there (Click on the "sandbox" next to "talk" right up the top of your screen and paste the text in there to fool around with it without anyone critiquing it until you are done).
- Anyone can remove a template if you feel you have made the necessary changes and if anyone posts it back up then at least you can ask for there opinion as to what is wrong. Cheers Hughesdarren (talk) 21:20, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

Souvenir Plots (Scotland)
[edit]Hi hughesdarren,
I just want to discuss https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Souvenir_Plots_(Scotland) if you had a moment? I note you have put it down as paraphrasing so just wanted to check what parts you thought were paraphrased so I can amend?
I have been working on the following page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Registration_(Scots_law) and was covering the legal requirements relating to registration of deeds of land in Scotland and had to cover souvenir plot as they are exempt from registration. However, I felt a separate page for a souvenir plot would serve the matter better as it is commonly sold item online and there is no wikipedia page explaining it to the wider world outside of Scotland.
The structure of the article follows a distinction that has to be made when explaining souvenir plots: the heraldry aspect and the ownership aspect. I can appreciate the Journal article follows this format too but there is no other way to deal with it as the two matters are completely separate areas of law. I cannot accept the characterisation that it is a paraphrase if there is no other way to cover the issue comprehensively for Wiki users. To omit one section or the other, would be a grave omission which I personally cannot recommend. I had actually already started the structure before accessing the Journal article, such coincidences are not surprising in law.
In law, as you can appreciate, there are some words and phrases you cannot express in any other form because they are the law as it stands in statute. This includes the words souvenir plot and the definition of it as they are contained in the statute. The Journal article was also written under the old 1979 law which has now been replaced by the 2012 one so I could not have paraphrased this element and the wording of the law is my own as far as I can phrase it.
The matters relating to the creation of real rights in Scotland cannot be amended in any other way as each word such as registration or recording has a distinct legal meaning in Scots law so I cannot amend the text any further as this would become incorrect and would be a discredit to Wikipedia. I have gone further than the Journal article here too, explaining the concepts of legal ownership in Scots law and its key elements with references to the key legal texts. The Journal article did not do this as it is written for Scottish solicitors so it is common knowledge to them.
However, above all I just want to empahasise the wording was mine alone. I did not copy any part of the Journal article but there are some words which cannot be avoided as they are the law. I also have explained further the matters relating to heraldry, having consulted and referenced the eminent legal text on the matter. To reword here it would be a diservice to the article as it would employ words that are not legally or factually correct such as heraldry, which has a distinct legal meaning. I consider the statement from the Court of the Lord Lyon as well fair under copyright law use as it is a public statement by a public organisation and succinctly explains the law well. The law behind heraldry is ancient, and very few legal writings exist explaining it so the quote of the Lord Lyon is the best possible source. The only way I could obtain the actual law on this would be accessing Scottish University archive materials which is not so easily obtained.
Overall, I have only made three references to the Journal article so I would be grateful if you could be assist with highlighting what you think needs changed. I hope this is okay to clarify with you and apologies for the law lesson.
Best wishes, Kentigern1136 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kentigern1136 (talk • contribs) 19:37, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Kentigern1136, Checking for copyright violation is part of the page curation process and once I place a tag there another reviewer will check as well. In this case each section had a quotation so I had been fairly sure it was OK and as it turned out it was and when the next reviewer came along they removed the tag and curated the article through. Thanks for all you efforts. Regards Hughesdarren (talk) 21:08, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Hughesdarren, I appreciate double checking by CSD tag. I was wondering if you could share your thoughts on this article? The editor has since made smallish changes, however, I continue to believe that the article is far from encyclopedic and probably requires some TNT to get it on the way. I do not disagree that the person may be pass GNG (if reliable sources are identified), but in it's current form the article is full of undue glorification and reads more like a corporate website praising their leader: "Kiggundu is one of the Country's best-known entrepreneurs", "and leading revolutionist of life's importance", "He passionately talks about success", "Currently he is very popular in Ugandan Media", "His father Segawa was a very silent successful businessman", "Kiggundu is apparently a successful and prominent businessman" etc etc. All of which with dubious or no sources at all. Besides, there's an article in Draft that has been declined at AfC plenty of times. The probable COI/PAID of the author is another issue... pseudonym Jake Brockman talk 01:31, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
- I had originally tagged it mostly for having no references which the editor had resolved, so I removed my tag. I agree that the subject was far from notable and that the article was heavy on praise and of dubious notability but once the references had been put in place I let it go. I take it has been deleted now. Thank you if you took care of that. I try to avoid articles on Adfrican businesspeople and musicians as they all suffer similar problems. Anyway thanks for the message and keep up the good work. Regards. Hughesdarren (talk) 03:31, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Design Cafe, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: there's enough sources there for A7. Needs to go to AfD if you think it doens't meet the GNG etc. . Thank you. GedUK 13:30, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
- No worries probably should have tagged it for A1, deleted now anyway. Cheers. Hughesdarren (talk) 22:26, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, Hughesdarren
Thank you for creating Lydia D. Killefer School.
User:Usernamekiran, while examining this page as a part of our page curation process, had the following comments:
Hi. I hope you are doing well. When you marked this article as reviewed, it did not have {{reflist}} under references header (or any other template), all the section headers were === (they should have been ==) (but this is hard to spot), and the talkpage didn't exist. Whenever you see a non existing talkpage, kindly ask the author to see similar articles, and their talkpages; and to add relevant wikiproject banners to the talkpage of newly created articles. See you around :)

New Page Patrol December Newsletter
[edit]Hello Hughesdarren,
- Year in review
It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.
Rank | Username | Num reviews | Log |
---|---|---|---|
1 | DannyS712 bot III (talk) | 67,552 | Patrol Page Curation |
2 | Rosguill (talk) | 63,821 | Patrol Page Curation |

9 | Hughesdarren (talk) | 4,520 | Patrol Page Curation |
10 | Utopes (talk) | 3,958 | Patrol Page Curation |
- Reviewer of the Year
John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.
- NPP Technical Achievement Award
As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Why move to draft?
[edit]Why move the Politburo articles to draft? They are lists. They are inspired by the 17th Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party... Why are there certain rules for some articles and not others? --Ruling party (talk) 23:18, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
- Each of the articles had no references and were originally redirects to Politburo of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party. the more references you can provide will demonstrate notability and verifiability. Don't worry the articles are in draft space and not deleted and now other editors can help you work on them. Regards. Hughesdarren (talk) 01:22, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

[edit]Hi! I think you shouldn't have tagged some of these articles for CSD under G5 criteria. As I posted this, they aren't blocked for being a sock of somebody and was not even indefinite (as I realized later when Iri declined it for the second time). By the way, I have draftified all of these articles created by them now - and I plan to work some of them. Sorry for being not concise or stalking. Thanks. MarioJump83! 06:56, 13 March 2021 (UTC)
- The user was banned at very close to the same time the articles were created but both were on the same date. According to Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion it says This applies to pages created by banned or blocked users in violation of their ban or block, and that have no substantial edits by others. They don't have to be a sock or indefinitely banned. You have now edited this comment 10 times in five hours. Leave it alone. Page curation is a painful business at the best of times carried out by a dwindling list of participants while the rest of us feel unsupported as a result this sort of commentary. Why did you add the link rot tag to the page? All the links still work. Pizza0614 (talk) 23:01, 19 March 2021 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: List of Stuff You Should Know episodes (2019)
[edit]Hello Hughesdarren. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of List of Stuff You Should Know episodes (2019), a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: the 2019 content isn't on the parent page, and there's a discussion that decided that the parent list it too long and should be split. . Thank you. GedUK 13:44, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Taxa named by Jean-Henri Humbert
[edit]A tag has been placed on Category:Taxa named by Jean-Henri Humbert requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021
[edit]Hello Hughesdarren,
Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.
Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.
At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.
There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.
Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.
To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here. Sent to 827 users. 04:31, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
How long does it take to review new pages these days?
[edit]Hi. Just curious to know from NPP point of view.
The backlog has increased while some of the active reviewers are no longer reviewing.
I created ESR Cayman a few days ago, but I'm guessing its going to have to wait a bit since the waiting list is getting rather large right now?
-Imcdc (talk) 02:06, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, Yes it can take a while. There are currently 5927 new pages some dating back to 2006. We need more reviewers, maybe you could help out. I will take a look at your page in a bit. Keep up the good work. Regards. Hughesdarren (talk) 10:15, 17 September 2021 (UTC)

Request to save reviewed article: Singhu border lynching (2021)
[edit]The page created by me and reviewed (& approved) by you, User:Hughesdarren: Singhu border lynching (2021) has been reverted to Draft by a User:Venkat TL giving a very vague reason that Wikipedia is not News, and caanot be used for a single vent, while there are thousands of Wiki pages on Rapes, Murders and Lynching of Single events. The page would get deleted unless you can take some action to revert the page back. This is a crucial incident widely reported in WP:RS sources in which a person from under-previleged protected class "Dalit" has been brutaly lynched and murdered. I hope you can revert this article back and save from deletion. Thanks a lot. Dhy.rjw (talk) 09:45, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
- OK Firstly calm down. Secondly please don't place comments on a user page, put them on the talk page where they belong. Thirdly, the page isn't being deleted, it has been placed in the draft space. The other user involved has stated his case. If there is more news coverage then you can put in more references, which means the event has greater notability. If it doesn't then it could be deleted. The rest of the community will have opportunity to comment and review. If you want to proactive then read the policies, engage with the other user and find more references. Regards. Hughesdarren (talk) 10:07, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. I greatly appreciate your guidance & assistance. Dhy.rjw (talk) 10:57, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

Your note on my talk page
[edit]Hughesdarren While we are discussing this matter on the talk page of the Draft talk:Singhu Border Lynching (2021), another editor is moving the page around. Do you approve that type of behavior? Don't you think you should be posting this notice message on the talk page of the editor who is moving the page in the middle of the discussion? --Venkat TL (talk) 11:55, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
About User VenkatTL
[edit]VenkatTL has been doing deletions for vandalism. He is specifically deleting any articles or sections or properly sourced texts which talk about the acts of violence committed by Sikh extremists. From his contributions, it is pretty clear he is deleting, applying wrong templates etc which is spreading disinformation. He even slandered you on his talk page: "And you should stop acting as a hired representative of dispruptive editors" I am a new user and dont know how to deal with his constant trolling -- as I try to make visible the atrocities suffered by a 'Dalit' at the hands of Sikh extremists. We need to do something to make sureVenkatTL does not do any more damage. Wikipedia should not be used for spreading misinformation. Thanks Rob108 (talk) 01:31, 19 October 2021 (UTC)Rob108
- I have only had dealings with this user on the one article (so far). If you are having problems as you describe and feel that action needs to be taken you can always contact an administrator, the user may be eligible for a topic ban. I am well aware of the comments on his talk page, but I am pretty sure he has deleted them now. Regards. Hughesdarren (talk) 08:13, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

Please remember to sign any posts you make with four tildes at the end (four of these: ~), you could also read Wikipedia:Signatures. Regards. Hughesdarren (talk) 10:06, 23 October 2021 (UTC)

Prospect dolerite intrusion
[edit]Hi. I believe there is a huge mistake regarding the article I just created. I copied/moved the contents from the geology section of Prospect Hill article (which I later removed from that article and moved to this article, because they are more relevant there). The website roscimetosne.tk, in actuality, has copied all content from that Wikipedia article much later. In other words, the Wikipedia entry is the ORIGINAL writing -- Please check the history of Prospect Hill article. You'll see that the geology content has been there for some time. Further, roscimetosne.tk does NOT seem like a legit website. Seems like a Wikipedia copycat or bot site (it is filled with ads). Again, this has to be a mistake. To add another thing, .tk is the ccTLD for Tokelau. Why would they create an article for a geological structure in Sydney? Please see into this, mate. Thanks. ~ Qumarchi 09:53, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
- Yes that website does look bogus but the copyright software is also picking up close paraphrasing from [8]. The Prospect Hill (New South Wales) article is also picking up copyright infringement from [9] you can check the results yourself using [10]. A administrator with more experience in copyright infringement will sort it out. Regards. Hughesdarren (talk) 10:20, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Hi
[edit]Hi HughesDarren Happy for you to delete Gold Coast Titans women's squad page I was attempting to create a template page (for tghe first time) and didn't initially realise that I had to prefix it with template: Have done that now Thank you, Nhoj1898
CSD A1
[edit]Hello, Darren. I noticed that you tagged Gold Coast Titans women's squad under the A1 speedy deletion criterion. However, it did not fall under that criterion (the title would have allowed for expansion, not to mention that there were revisions in the page history that did not fulfil the criterion). I've converted the nomination into a G7. Thank you, Sdrqaz (talk) 13:32, 12 November 2021 (UTC)
Hey Darren,
Sorry to bother you again, but could you please help me with formatting the Toyota RV10 engine article data and engine information table? It keeps saying, "Convert: Ignore invalid option." I don't know why it's saying that. I did everything right, but it just won't publish the engine infobox table. Your help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks, Davism0703 (talk) 07:53, 15 November 2021 (UTC)
- No worries, All done. One of the fields was missing a bracket was all. Keep up the good work and best regards. Hughesdarren (talk) 10:32, 15 November 2021 (UTC)
New articles without wikiproject banners
[edit]Hi, I hope you are doing well. I recently came across Choghadak District, which you have reviewed. It did not have a talk page. Generally, while marking such articles as reviewed, we should notify the user. I generally send a message from the curation toolbar similar to "kindly add related wikiproject banners on the talkpage, see similar article's talkpage for reference". Thanks for reviewing the articles again. See you around. —usernamekiran • sign the guestbook • (talk) 15:10, 20 November 2021 (UTC)
