Hi, @ConsumerWithSpasmodicDysphonia: references can be trickier than they first seem. We'll get it sorted out. The first thing I notice is that reference 45 appears to be exactly what you describe above. So far so good. Then I noticed that it is identical to ref 46 (I just noticed because it immediately follows it) so what we really want to have is one citation, referenced at two places in the article.

 Done Looking at the code, that reference was defined where you indicate, and also at the end of the one-line History section. The second version had slightly more information, e.g. both authors, so I decided to keep that one. I named it by changing the ref to "<ref name=Dedo1991>". Then I changed the other one (as you describe above) to use that named reference, i.e. ""<ref name=Dedo1991/>" (note the / at the end to indicate there is nothing more to come). I don't know if that description makes sense - it might be easier to look at the actual code. @ConsumerWithSpasmodicDysphonia: Such edit clashes are one of the challenges of using Wikipedia. There was a break in editing, so I had another go at it. I see that you have moved that sentence into History now, immediately after that reference is already used. Not sure if that was just to get around the problem, or if it's what you really wanted. In the interim, I have made the changes above although they look peculiar now because Ref. 45 is used twice, but they are on successive sentences in the same paragraph. So if you leave everything in its current place, you probably don't need both references. However, if you move one back where it was then you can take the ref with it, and it should work fine. --Gronk Oz (talk) 04:34, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

@Movingframes: I guess you are talking about article Yaara Ve (film). I see that you put in that information, and it was removed by an anonymous IP editor with this edit: [1]. They did not leave any reason for the edit, but I imagine it is because the source did not support it. The source says "Produced by Bally Singh Kakar, it would release..." The link you give above does not mention those co-producers either. I no longer answer questions on either the Help Desk or The Teahouse, but I do notify people they got a response if they didn't respond on the page where they asked or they didn't get pinged or otherwise notified after the question was archived, and they are new to Wikipedia. Reversing a 12 year old merge?

Can't quite figure why you reverse a 2007 merge of an unreferenced piece of inworld WP:CRUFT at The Knack (Dilbert episode) with this edit leaving the edit note "Wikify punctuation for quotes per MOS:QUOTEMARKS"? What am I missing? Klbrain (talk) 18:08, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

@Klbrain: Mea culpa, I didn't realize I was doing that. Serial Number 54129 has reverted it, so it's in a good state now. If you're interested in how it happened, I saw a Userbox on somebody's page which says he has "the knack" and links to this page. I followed the link out of curiosity, and I did not notice that it led to an old version of the page. I just noticed that the quotation marks were wrong so I fixed them. Of course, that brought back the whole old page. Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Interstellarity. I honestly thought I had Rollback, because I use Twinkle which gives rollback functionality. But you're right - I was not in the Rollback user group. Philosopher in Meditation

Because so little ever happens in the abovementioned article and I am not a very technically versed Wikipedian, I take this opportunity to learn something. Since you corrected my wording, I assume that you read the entire article in some detail and found only this to change: the first of its kind since I posted the article in 2011(?). Being a professional translator into English, I consider my written English to be correct, and I would be interested in knowing what is wrong with the formulation "the exact same format"? Of course "exactly the same format" flows better and I have no objections to keeping it, but the slower rhythm of my original wording was meant to emphasize the fact of sameness. I too am going to object to making that exact same change, as you did at PATCO Speedline. It is not incorrect, it is fully idiomatic, the replacement does not always work, and it leads to awkward phrasing. Also, it's not a mere typo, so your edit summary is misleading. Hello Jan van der Zone and Oknazevad. I am very surprised that you would object to that change, because "the exact same" is just a common grammatical error. It uses the adjective "exact" in place of an adverb. This is why it is included in the standard list of errors that are automotically corrected by Wikipedia's AWB tool, as was the case here. I did not make that choice based on my own opinion and it is not on "my list of changes"; it was the consensus of Wikipedia editors' opinions as embodied into the tool's list of typo corrections. However, if you feel there is a good reason to retain the original wording you are always free to revert the change.Gronk Oz (talk) 23:58, 9 May 2019 (UTC)

If you feel so strongly that the replacement wording is "incredibly awkward and ungrammatical phrasing" (which is how I feel about the original wording) then the best place to raise your objection is probably on the AWB talk page, to request it be removed. I'm asking that when you use AWB in the future, remember that anyone who uses AWB still has the responsibility to review the changes made and to verify them before saving the edits. Don't assume that just because a change is automatically included in its workings that it must be made in the final edit. I actually did remove it, but another user turned it into a comment instead. Considering it was added after only one person requested it, with no real discussion (as seen in the archives of the typo sibpage of the discussion page), it shouldn't need too much discussion to remove. @Jan van der Zone: I took a closer look at Philosopher in Meditation, and if you want to improve it then the citations need some work. At the moment it is a confusing mix of full and short citations, without the benefit of a separate "References" section. Choose one approach and stick with it throughout the article. See Wikipedia:Citing_sources#WP:CITESHORT for the recommended approach if you prefer short citations. Reference 12 is more problematic: is simply says "Op. cit., 198." without any indication of which source it is intended to refer to. Op cit is generally deprecated, but if you feel there is good reason to use it in this case then please follow the guideline at Op. cit..--Gronk Oz (talk) 00:24, 10 May 2019 (UTC)

Short descriptions for Doctor Who companions

I had a longer response but I lost the message. Might expand what I was considering later but basically I was not aware that 40 characters was the cut off point for short descriptions on mobile devices, nor did I see this mentioned on the information page (which states "A target of 40 characters has been suggested, but this can be exceeded when necessary"). Should Wikipedia shun from giving both sides of the discovery of Telfer mine & others, and favorise the fraudulent corporate story. A kind of self-imposed blackout on an evident ridiculous claim, whose basis is the cover-up of a Multi-Billions fraud. ( as late Attorney General T.D Evans asserted.

Is then, since it was not you, Graham87 party in that attempt to suppress information as to what happened. It seems so, but this does not give credit to the impartiality of Wikipedia. Furthermore tarnish the image of Wikipedia he is supposed to uphold.

You may choose not to transfer totally what I wrote, but at the very least those references should be included.

Incidentally, you may know that I did not get a cent nor a thanks for my exceptional service to your country, but on the other hand calumnies, innuendos & the most callous ingratitude. This is what Graham87 stands for, obviously, considering the way he immediately dismissed the update & rectification I made. Contrarily to what is patent now, the article on Telfer mine should not have been written by the Newmont/ Newcrest crew, but indeed in all impartiality by people able to assess the real History, and whose allegiance was to Wikipedia only.

@Basalt3711: You're right, I do not know the history of that area. Nor do I need to be. Remember, Wikipedia articles are not based on the personal knowledge of the editors, nor on their original research - they are based on a summary of the best available sources. As I said on your Talk page, if you have a proposal to change that article then the best place to discuss it is on the article's Talk page. Provide references and suggest what specific changes you think should be made. I looked back at the change you made before, and frankly I could not understand what it was saying - you and the other editors will need to work on presenting it more clearly. Be clear - nobody has said that new information such as yours can't be included, but it needs to be supported by references, and clearly presented in line with Wikipedia's Manual of Style. @Juanpumpchump: - good point. The guideline at MOS:NICKNAME also says "If a person has a common English-language hypocorism (diminutive or abbreviation) used in lieu of a given name" then it does not need to be spelled out. I don't have a strong feeling about it, but it seems to me that Tom and Matt are normal short forms of Thomas and Matthew. But "Jon" is not such a common contraction for "John" (of Jonathon perhaps, but not so much for John). @Juanpumpchump: - I don't see how any of those relate to Pertwee's particular situation. The only one of those which is a contraction of "John" is Bon Jovi, and his Wikipedia article does list both names. @Lydiahoughton: there are two different ways to do the page numbering. The easiest (which I mostly use) is to add the {{rp}} tag at each citation. Note that I changed the reference name from ":1" to the more meaningful "Leithhead_2019" - I hope that is okay. So then a reference to page 123 would be coded as <ref name="Leithhead_2019"/>{{rp|123}}. The more complicated, but arguably more elegant, way is to use {{sfn}} - I'll leave it to you to read up on that approach if you're interested.--Gronk Oz (talk) 01:35, 18 November 2020 (UTC)

No way what are the chances! I went and looked and the referencing changes, thank you for doing that and for explaining it. I was just wondering, I saw you changed "Aboriginal" to "Aborigine". I did a quick research and it was my understanding that the correct word should now be Aboriginal. Do you agree with this and is it ok if I go through and change each one to Aboriginal? @Lydiahoughton: "Aborigine" is the noun, "aboriginal" is the adjective. In practice they are often confused, especially because terms like "aboriginal people" get shortened without changing the form. I know most people don't worry about stuff like that, but I try to stick with it. However, now that you mention it I started looking around and I found that some people deprecate the word "aborigine" when referring to an individual, preferring to refer to the individual tribal group which the person belongs to - this was suggested for incorporation into Wikipedia's Manual of Style, but it was rejected (here). So without a guideline to refer to, I am left with just my individual view. Out of interest, and as a learning exercise (which is what this is about for you!), perhaps don't take this one person's word for everything. I won't be offended: Wikipedia works on general consensus. There are a couple of options. Obviously start by searching the Manual of Style for yourself. Then you could ask at the Help Desk for guidance on the two terms. It found only minor changes - changing curly apostrophes to straight ones per MOS:APOSTROPHE, and it consolidated references that were re-used. Hello @P2dwight: you have really jumped in the deep end as a new editor, putting in a huge effort on that article - well done! I am particularly impressed with the collaborative approach you have taken, trying to get other editors involved on the Talk page. You are doing everything right, and I encourage you to continue in this spirit of co-operation. The main discussion should remain on the Talk page where all editors can see it. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the subject so I don't see how I can really contribute to the conversations about content. My changes were just minor copy-edits done using the AWB tool to fix typos etc. I am happy to help if I can, but I can only really offer general comments - for instance, "Recent history" starts out "As it was evidenced by the discussion in preceding sections Pernambuco has made great strides in improving the quality of life for its citizens" - that reads more like an essay, where the author is trying to make a point, rather than an encyclopaedia which simply summarizes what the best sources have to say. Articles generally should not have "discussion", especially not from the author's point of view. I think this is probably the sort of thing the tags are driving at, and it will get cleaned up over time. I noticed you left a template on my talk page about deleting personal attacks. According to WP:TPO, I am allowed to do this. The guideline states, Removing harmful posts, including personal attacks, trolling, and vandalism from talk pages is acceptable. The content in question did not contain any kind of suggestion for improving the article, and was simply trolling. @Geogene: if you feel strongly that there was some personal attack then you always have the option to escalate to arbitration. Before doing that, you might like to consider an opposing view to the essay you refer to at WP:TR, written by a Sysop who obviously has more experience than all three of us combined. Reading the history of comments that led up to this, I have no doubt that you "believe you understand this better than I do" and so your actions are above criticism; that is a shame because that attitude makes collaborative discussions difficult. Similarly, deleting other editors' comments from a discussion is a form of bullying that damages collaboration. RobP's specific comment pointed out an inconsistency in what had been said, and said nothing at all about you, so I cannot see how it is a personal attack - it addressed the points, not the person. @Khudaeidadkhan: references are very important, but being an orphan is a different issue. It is not a serious problem, by the way. The article is an orphan because no other articles are linked to it. So to fix that, edit a different article to include a Wikilink back to this article - perhaps a suitable place might be Qāriʾ#Notable Qāri?

My next suggestion if you want to improve the article is the expand the Career section. That is the reason that he is notable, so it deserves more than a single paragraph. Tell the story of how he got started, and how me developed this career (as given in the sources, of course). In particular, see if you can be more specific about vague terms like "travelled to several countries" or at the end "won various awards". There is a list of awards later, but for the reader it would be helpful to explain a little about why the most important ones are significant. Similarly, the heading for that section is currently "Early life and career" but it does not mention his early life. Don't spend too much time on that, but if you have sources that talk about where he grew up and got started in this career, then a short summary here might help the reader to get a more complete understanding.--Gronk Oz (talk) 22:43, 19 June 2021 (UTC)

Hello, Gronk Oz. Thank you for keeping the Micro Center article tidy. I'm afraid I must disagree with your reversion of the word tense. If the information was valid yesterday (October 4, 2021), they we could easily say it is current and thus a present word tense is appropriate, or we could say that because it was yesterday that a past word tense is appropriate. I based my decision on word tense on three factors: 1, the business is still in operation; 2, it is likely that those figures are close if not spot-on accurate being a recent past; 3, articles on people vary word tense according to context, but the lede is generally present tense for the living.
I admit that this still leaves it open to debate. The best solution would be to verify the information, and to update as necessary—I was busy at the time, so I didn't undertake this, nor did I expect it to get reverted. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 23:09, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

Not a typo in Tavastian dialects

 Done Hello from Australia. If you are Hassan Ali Kasi, then I thank you for not editing the page yourself. As you can imagine, it is difficult for any person to be balanced and objective when writing about themselves, so we discourage people from doing it. In general, the best way to request somebody to edit the page is to request it on the Talk page associated with that page - see the process described at Wikipedia:Edit requests.

But in this case, I am happy to help out. Note that the pakobserver source was not usable, since all it said about the subject was "[The event] was also attended by Hassan Ali Kasi, a student of Islamic Studies at IIUI who won a world recitation competition." Simply attending an event is hardly notable, and the competition win was already in the article. Everything else has gone into the article; at first I wasn't sure about the Facebook page but I am satisfied that it meets the standards at WP:ELOFFICIAL to be an official link.
