Is the source code of BattyBot available anywhere?

I might be able to help with Future ideas mentioned for BattyBot but couldn't find the source code for it to help FallingPineapple (talk) 17:07, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

@FallingPineapple - BattyBot uses AutoWikiBrowser, whose source code can be found here on SourceForge. For each task, I use AWB's general fixes in combination with custom find and replace rules and/or custom modules. GoingBatty (talk) 18:18, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
It's a shame I checked and it's not native for Linux FallingPineapple (talk) 16:19, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

Question from FAberdeen on Farhad Hasanzadeh (20:20, 9 January 2023)

Hi, I edited a page now. However, I don’t see the changes now. How long does it take to publish the changes? --FAberdeen (talk) 20:20, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

@FAberdeen: Hi there! When you edit most articles (including Farhad Hasanzadeh) and press "Publish changes", the changes are immediately published and visible to all. I see that in your edit, you not only added dates for the books, but also capitalized some of the infobox parameters (e.g. |occupation= to |Occupation=). Unfortunately, {{Infobox writer}} does not support capitalized parameters, so the values in those parameters are not visible in the infobox. I have fixed the infobox in this edit for you. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 20:35, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
@FAberdeen Another way you can help improve the "Selected works" and "Works translated to languages other than Persian" sections of the article is to add italics for the titles of books/newspapers/magazines, and add "quotation marks" for the titles of short stories and newspaper/magazine articles. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 21:14, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi thanks for advise and help. FAberdeen (talk) 23:52, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

Typographic conformity

Consider this edit: [1] I don't think it's correct to change «Москва» to "Москва". MOS:CONFORMTITLE seems to apply here: "Generally, the guidelines on typographic conformity in quoted material also apply to titles of works, including normalization of dashes and quotation marks". MOS:CONFORM says "When quoting text from non-English languages, the outer punctuation should follow the Manual of Style for English quote marks. If there are nested quotations, follow the rules for correct punctuation in that language." My reading of these together is that the native quotation marks should not have been changed. GA-RT-22 (talk) 21:47, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

@GA-RT-22: Thank you for making this report. BattyBot uses AutoWikiBrowser with the general fixes enabled. One of these general fixes changes guillemets in citation titles to straight quotation marks. Many years ago, Rjwilmsi (one of the AWB developers) defended AWB's functionality in this post by pointing to the MOS, which used to simply state:

Do not use accent marks, backticks (`text´), low-high („ “) or guillemet (« ») marks as quotation marks.

This part of the MOS has been discussed many times. As a result of this discussion on the MOS talk page in 2020, the MOS changed in this edit by Beland and this subsequent edit by EEng so the MOS now includes an exception:

Do not use accent marks, backticks (`text´), low-high („ “) or guillemet (« ») marks as quotation marks (except when such marks are internal to quoted non-English text – see MOS:CONFORM).

Therefore, I have submitted an AWB request to have the general fixes changed so that AWB no longer replaces guillemets in citation titles. I also partially reverted my bot's edit to restore the guillemets. Thanks again, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 22:52, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. Impressively thorough research, and fast response too. GA-RT-22 (talk) 23:51, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

Year disambiguation suffices

Hi GoingBatty, I just reverted an edit by BattyBot which broke the {{sfn}} references in the article by removing disambiguation suffices from the dates in references. This reminded me of this discussion that we had last year about a similar issue with WPCleaner – perhaps the BattyBot code needs some similar tweaking? Thanks, Wham2001 (talk) 21:24, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

@Wham2001 Thanks for catching my error and reverting it. Category:CS1 errors: dates now identifies |access-date= values (but importantly NOT |date= values) with suffixes as errors. What I thought was a limited fix for obvious typos was not, so I've reverted it in my code. This smaller manual edit seems to have resolved the issue in the Snuneymuxw First Nation article while maintaining the proper {{sfn}} references.
I checked the watchlist for Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors‎, and the edit you found is the only recent BattyBot edit that added an article to this category. Thanks for keeping me straight! GoingBatty (talk) 21:51, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
Excellent – thank-you! And thanks for spotting that the article had a bug with the |access-date= that needed fixing – I had missed that. Best, Wham2001 (talk) 08:44, 17 January 2023 (UTC)

Question from FAberdeen on Farhad Hasanzadeh (10:24, 20 January 2023)

Morning, I need help with the reference. I want the reference number to be on the same line of the text. But it goes to the next line. For example reference number 26, which goes to the following line. May you please help me? --FAberdeen (talk) 10:24, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

@FAberdeen  Done in this edit by removing the <br> line break from between the text and the <ref>. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 13:46, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for advise. FAberdeen (talk) 17:44, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

Question from FAberdeen on Farhad Hasanzadeh (09:50, 27 January 2023)

Hi, I edited the Category section. However, I do not see this section being published. Have I made any mistake? --FAberdeen (talk) 09:50, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

@FAberdeen: I see you made this edit where you added two categories to the article. I do not understand why you do not see these categories on the article. Yes, you made a mistake by adding the non-existent Category:Iranian Female Identity to the article. (The red color of the link tells you that the category does not exist.) Please remove this category from the article. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 14:45, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

Question from FAberdeen on Farhad Hasanzadeh (09:59, 27 January 2023)

Hello, I need to change my email address please. --FAberdeen (talk) 09:59, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

@FAberdeen: You can change your email address on your Preferences page on the "User Profile" tab. GoingBatty (talk) 14:47, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

Thanks I changed my email. FAberdeen (talk) 18:03, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

Nationality in infoboxes

Hi, I noticed BattyBot making lots of changes to nationality fields in infoboxes. WP:INFONAT says "Generally, use of either should be avoided when the country to which the subject belongs can be inferred from the country of birth, as specified with |birthplace=". So is it really an appropriate se for a bot? DuncanHill (talk) 01:29, 29 January 2023 (UTC)

@DuncanHill - Hi there! The topic was brought up at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/BattyBot 61, and it was decided to not have the bot remove the value. I'll suspend running that bot task in case you want to discuss it further. GoingBatty (talk) 01:35, 29 January 2023 (UTC)
No that's OK, I just wasn't sure if you were aware (a LOT of people aren't!) - if it's been OK'd at Requests for approval then I see no reason why you shouldn't carry on. If the boxes are going to have a nationality value then it is better if it's correct. DuncanHill (talk) 01:39, 29 January 2023 (UTC)
@DuncanHill - In addition to improving the text and removing overlinking, hopefully the bot edits also brings the articles to attention to editors like you who can manually review and improve the articles where needed. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 01:45, 29 January 2023 (UTC)
I'll take a look at any that come up on my watchlist. All the best, DuncanHill (talk) 01:46, 29 January 2023 (UTC)

Question from Maha Trade Market Pune (07:34, 30 January 2023)

If I want to publish my own article or page, is it compulsory to do atleast 10 edits? --Maha Trade Market Pune (talk) 07:34, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

@Maha Trade Market Pune: Hi there! Creating a new article is one of the hardest things to do on Wikipedia, especially if you have a conflict of interest (COI), such as writing about your own business. To learn how to edit, I suggest you start at Help:Introduction. I suggest spending a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills. When you're ready to create an article, you would gather multiple published independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of the subject, and determine whether they demonstrate that the subject meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". If so, you would declare any COI on your user page. Then follow the instructions at Help:Your first article, and be prepared for a process that may include months of waiting for review, rejections, and rewrites, before an article is created. If you are successful, then you could never edit the article directly if you have a COI, but could submit edit requests on the article's talk page.
Please also read the Wikipedia:Username policy and change your username accordingly.
Hope this helps! GoingBatty (talk) 13:44, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

this is newly published article. that was just bearly accepted

can you look it over? RJJ4y7 (talk) 20:07, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

jumping jackass

Hi, your disambiguation of jackass to donkey (in John White (bishop)) has defeated the point of the comment! Only the jackass disambiguation page mentions the primary meaning (obviously intended by Bale) of "a person who is rude or foolish" - which is why I left that link. It does not occur on the Donkey page to which you have directed it. Can you suggest a better way of linking to this meaning? In UK English the word "ass" would cover it, but the American usage connotations exclude it. While it does originally signify "male donkey", the word "jackass" in UK English is, I think, almost always used to mean a stupid person. What does it say in Wiktionary, and might one be able to link there instead? Best wishes, Eebahgum (talk) 03:34, 31 January 2023 (UTC)

@Eebahgum: Before disambiguating the page, I used Google Translate, which returned "donkey". However, based on your post here, I changed the link to wikt:Jackass. Is that better? GoingBatty (talk) 03:43, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
That's perfect, thankyou! It took me a few tries to find the real English equivalent to the Latin, so I'm pleased with your solution. Many thanks, and good wishes. Eebahgum (talk) 03:49, 31 January 2023 (UTC)

A kitten for you!

Thanks for the suggestion!

Question from FAberdeen on Farhad Hasanzadeh (00:31, 31 January 2023)

Hi, sorry to ask again but I still do not see the categories. I do not know why. --FAberdeen (talk) 00:31, 31 January 2023 (UTC)

@FAberdeen Are you viewing Wikipedia in desktop view or mobile view or in an app? Do you see categories on other articles? GoingBatty (talk) 01:54, 31 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi, I view the page on my mobile. I don't view any categories on other articles. I can see them if I go to editing. FAberdeen (talk) 10:02, 31 January 2023 (UTC)

@FAberdeen: Help:Categories states:

Categories are not displayed in the mobile version. Mobile users can click "Desktop" at the bottom of a page to see the desktop version with categories. Registered users can enable Advanced mode which includes a "Categories" button.

Hope this helps! GoingBatty (talk) 13:53, 31 January 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for information. By the way where I find the full list of categories? So the category wouldn't be apart of them. FAberdeen (talk) 17:56, 31 January 2023 (UTC)

@FAberdeen: See Special:Categories for a full list of categories. There are tens of thousands of categories. GoingBatty (talk) 18:16, 31 January 2023 (UTC)

Hey do you mind reviewing this article for me

Best Kept Secret (management company) - I see my article was flagged for neutrality, I removed some words that could have been perceived as promotional and expanded on their foundation, looking for outside perspective on the subject. Officialangrydub (talk) 03:11, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

@Officialangrydub: Hi there! I didn't look at every reference, but references 1,2,3,12,15 look like advertisements, not independent sources. References 5,6,7,9,10,11 don't seem to mention Best Kept Secret. Are there any independent sources that provide significant coverage of the company on the draft? GoingBatty (talk) 04:11, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
Reference #4 seemed like the strongest source in my eyes, they went very in depth with their coverage. #3 didn't seem like an advertisement to me nor does #15, but 15 is an interview however doesn't make any extra-ordinary claims of third parties so I was under the impression that according to Wikipedia's guidelines it would be allowed to included. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to help me. Officialangrydub (talk) 04:27, 8 February 2023 (UTC)
@Officialangrydub - #4 is an interview. With statements such as "every artist that is involved with BKS is bound to be very successful", #15 doesn't appear to be the writing of an independent journalist. GoingBatty (talk) 04:39, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

awaiting for the response Aryaanmalik516 (talk) 16:28, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

@Aryaanmalik516: Please be patient when waiting for a response on a user talk page or a draft submission. The yellow box at the top of the draft states "This may take 3 months or more, since drafts are reviewed in no specific order. There are 2,471 pending submissions waiting for review." The reviewer will determine if the references are enough.
I replaced the external links with wikilinks, and suggest fixing or removing the redlinks. While you're waiting, I suggest fixing or removing reference #3, and fixing references #2 and #18. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:32, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

sir so nice of you. as per your suggestion you can remove #2 #3 and #18 coz if I edited then I have to resubmit it again. awaiting for your kind action pls Aryaanmalik516 (talk) 16:37, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

@Aryaanmalik516: Help:Your first article#Create your draft states: "When you feel that the article is ready, you can submit it for review by an experienced editor. If there isn't already a "Submit for review" button on the draft, you can add {{subst:submit}} to the top of the draft to submit it." GoingBatty (talk) 18:35, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

@GoingBatty Aryaanmalik516 (talk) 18:34, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

@Aryaanmalik516: You don't need to @mention someone on their own talk page. Just putting an @ in front of a user name doesn't work on Wikipedia. Note that I'm using @[[User:Aryaanmalik516|Aryaanmalik516]], but I could also use {{reply to|Aryaanmalik516}}. For more information, see Help:Notifications. Happy editing! New Article Question

Good Day Sir, I am interested in writing an article and I wanted to get your opinion on the best way to write it and link to existing Wikipedia articles. E.G. Writing a new article on a new widget produced by ABC Manufacturing Co. when 'ABC' already has a Wikipedia article.

Do you write the entire article and then do the linking? Or do you do the linking as you go?

Thank you for your help and I hope you have a great day!

Problem with "generic name" fix

Here, your bot inserted an extraneous space before )), which changed the anchor from "...Speech1939" to "...Speech_1939", disconnecting it from the {{sfnp}} reference to that citation. Question from Meekrton (16:26, 2 March 2023)

Hello there, I was trying to make a page on John Parker Romo (Current XFL Kicker) the football player. How much experience do I need to publish it? Hope you are having a good day. --Meekrton (talk) 16:26, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

@Meekrton: Hi there! To create an article and not have it deleted, you'll need to abide by a myriad of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Help:Your first article is great resource. Experience will help you learn things such as WP:SECTIONS, and WP:EASYREFBEGIN. After you read WP:NBASIC and add more independent reliable sources that provide significant coverage of Romo (his teams' web sites and his Twitter feed aren't independent), I suggest moving User:Meekrton/sandbox to Draft:John Parker Romo and adding {{subst:submit}} to the top so it can be reviewed, improved, and hopefully moved to become an article. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 17:32, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

Question from Blitzfan51 (18:01, 2 March 2023)

and how do i add user boxes? --Blitzfan51 (talk) 18:01, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

@Blitzfan51:
  1. Find a user box you like, such as {{User Star Wars WikiProject}} or something from Wikipedia:Userboxes/Galleries.
  2. Go to User:Blitzfan51 and click "Edit source"
  3. Type the userbox template name.
  4. Click "Show preview" and ensure the userbox looks good.
  5. Click "Publish changes".
Feel free to go to anyone's user page, click "Edit source", and look what they've done to display userboxes. Just don't click "Publish changes" on anyone else's user page.
Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 22:07, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

hello. i am a new guy and i need help adding myself to the Star Wars wiki project editors thing. can you help? i'm a bit lost. --Blitzfan51 (talk) 17:58, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

@Blitzfan51: Hi there! Wikipedia:WikiProject Star Wars#How to help states "Please sign your name below and introduce yourself in the monthly roll call section of the talk page." In other words:
  1. Go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Star Wars/Participants, click "Edit source", follow the instructions that start with "To add yourself to the list of members...", add an edit summary, and then click the blue "Publish changes" button.
  2. Go to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Star Wars, click "Add topic", use subject "Roll Call - March 2023", and type a message introducing yourself and how you would like to improve Star Wars-related articles on Wikipedia. Then add an edit summary and click the blue "Publish changes" button.
GoingBatty (talk) 22:02, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

oh, and what are the guidelines for making an article about a youtuber? --Blitzfan51 (talk) 18:04, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

@Blitzfan51: Creating a new Wikipedia article can be challenging, especially if you do not have a lot of experience editing existing Wikipedia articles. To learn how to edit, I suggest you start at Help:Introduction. I suggest spending a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills. Once you're ready to create an article, you would gather multiple independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of the YouTuber, and determine whether they meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". See Wikipedia:WikiProject YouTube/Notability for an essay specific to YouTubers. If so, you could follow the instructions at Help:Your first article, and be prepared for a process that will include waiting for review, rejections, and rewrites before an article is created. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 22:14, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

Question about BattyBot's Task 30

I hope you're doing well and I hope you don't mind if I ask a quick question; how often does BattyBot run task 30, where it adds the living parameter to Template:WikiProject Biography on talk pages? It came up in a discussion where I mentioned the big back-and-forth between a large number of pages showing up over the past few weeks in Category:Biography articles without living parameter before being (mostly) cleared out by BattyBot (thank you for that task, by the way). - Aoidh (talk) 07:56, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

@Aoidh: Hi there! I run the bot almost daily, when I'm monitoring Category:Biography articles without living parameter and the other categories listed on my user page. GoingBatty (talk) 15:51, 6 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much for the quick response. - Aoidh (talk) 21:28, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

Question from XlycanX (08:19, 11 March 2023)

I wanted to add something to a page, but instead I accidentally created another new page. What to do now.? --XlycanX (talk) 08:19, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

XlycanX, you created your user page. That's okay. Just go ahead and add the content that you wanted to add. But please add a reliable source before doing so. — Nythar (💬-❄️) 08:24, 11 March 2023 (UTC)

Introduction & Question

Hello, it’s nice to meet you virtually! My name is Isabel and I’m a senior working on Wikipedia for my capstone project. In full transparency, I’m still learning the ropes and could use some guidance from Wiki experts.

I noticed you contributed to an article I’ve been working on adding new literature to — Food labelling and advertising law (Chile) — and I was wondering if you might be able to give me any input on improving my contributions? Or any advice you could share with a new member of Wikipedia? I look forward to learning from you. NUstudent1316 (talk) 18:23, 16 March 2023 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by NUstudent1316 (talkcontribs)

@NUstudent1316: Hi there! I had the pleasure of meeting someone from Chile a few years back who explained the labelling to me, and I visited the article to learn more.
Thank you for your additions to the article! Your paragraphs are well written, and accompanied by reliable sources.
I've made some edits to the article today, which are more technical in nature (e.g. duplicating references, consistent reference and date format, section headers in sentence case, italics, fixing typos).
Keep up the good work! (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) GoingBatty (talk) 20:36, 16 March 2023 (UTC)

Question from BringmeFacebooksbold on Draft:Gigagon (07:57, 18 March 2023)

Can i use product names in my page --BringmeFacebooksbold (talk) 07:57, 18 March 2023 (UTC)

@BringmeFacebooksbold: Hi there! It appears Draft:Gigagon has been deleted twice. I cannot think of a reason why you could not use a product name in an existing Wikipedia article, as long as you include a reference to a reliable source. If you want to write an article ABOUT a product, be sure to consult WP:NPRODUCT and Help:Your first article. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:34, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing Associated Press

@GoingBatty: Thank you for fixing the "last = Press | first = Associated" to "agency = Associated Press" on all those NBA teams season pages that I've added references to. Could you also change "cite news" to "cite web" on references that I've added that are linked to websites that don't show news articles like Basketball-Reference for example, please? I've edited NBA teams season pages from 1988-89 to 2002-03.

-Johnny4444Johnny4444 Johnny4444 (talk) 02:43, 19 March 2023 (UTC)

@Johnny4444: Hi there! Since changing {{cite news}} to {{cite web}} doesn't change the way the reference is displayed (see below), I wouldn't be able to get permission to create a bot to do so per WP:COSMETICBOT. Even doing so manually via AutoWikiBrowser would violate WP:AWBRULES.

Proper Table Source Coding Fix

Thanks for erasing that one column on the side of the list of serial rapists table. I couldn't find it for the life of me, it was a needle in a haystack, despite knowing it was just one extra character somewhere. File permission problem with File:FestForBeatlesFans2015.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:FestForBeatlesFans2015.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{permission pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. Here is a list of your uploads. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F11 of the criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 12:03, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

@Minorax: I took the photo with my own camera, and the metadata is included with the file. Is the issue that the poster itself is copyrighted? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 12:56, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
Yea. There's no FOP in the US for artworks. See c:COM:FOP US --Minorax«¦talk¦» 13:02, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi, GoingBatty

Thank you for your proofreading of my draft (A Yellow Butterfly Called Sphinx). I am a beginner. So, your experience is very valuable to me. Would you agree to help me and see if other corrections or improvements can be made for this first article to be accepted? Many thanks in advance. Philbobison Philbobison (talk) 01:10, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

@Philbobison: Hi there! I made a few tweaks for you, but a reviewer will have to judge whether the draft should be accepted based on the quality of the references. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:37, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Hi goingbatty,
Thanks for the tweaks!
About the references: for them to be good, I was inspired by the article about the play on the wiki in Italian. In fact, I almost retranslated the article. It's allowed, isn't it? But should I mention it at the top of my draft? Sincerely Philbobison Philbobison (talk) 07:10, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
@Philbobison: Translation is allowed - see Help:Translation. You can add the template {{Translated page}} to Draft talk:A Yellow Butterfly Called Sphinx. Good luck with the draft! GoingBatty (talk) 13:02, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
Hi, GoingBatty,
Thanks for the info. But I don't really know what to do. Will I have a better chance of my article being accepted if I mention just before the title: "translation and adaptation of the Italian wikipedia article "Una Farfalla gialla chiamata Sfinge".?
Sincerely Philbobison Philbobison (talk) 23:09, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
@Philbobison: No - that information does not belong in the article. A draft should be considered based on the information and sources listed on the draft, not based on whether or not it's a translation from another Wikipedia. GoingBatty (talk) 03:16, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, GoingBatty. Sincerely. Philbobison Philbobison (talk) 03:33, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

Request for AWB Code

Hey @GoingBatty I've had an interest in writing a bot for awhile and noticed that you use AWB for yours. If you have time and if it wouldn't be a lot of work on your end would you mind sharing the process you used to make your bots tasks? If you're busy I understand and wouldn't be upset if you had to pass. Thanks a lot for your time. Dr vulpes (💬📝) 09:14, 6 April 2023 (UTC)

PS I'm glad to see another Eagle here on Wiki making the place better. I passed my Eagle by the skin of my teeth so I never got fancy palms like you ;-) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr vulpes (talkcontribs) 09:14, 6 April 2023 (UTC)

@Dr vulpes: For my AWB bots, I use a combination of general fixes, custom find/replace rules, skip rules, and/or custom modules. For each task, I consider:
  • How will I make a list of pages to be edited?
  • How will I configure AWB so the bot makes the specific change?
  • How will I ensure that the bot does NOT make an edit without the specific change?
I'll be happy to share more details on a specific BattyBot task if you let me know which one you're interested in. GoingBatty (talk) 14:00, 6 April 2023 (UTC)

Polluted Category

Hi, please could you explain what the purpose/meaning is of tagging the category "MilAward Ribbon Description" as "polluted"? It's set up as a hidden/tracking category that is added to by a series of templates I am working on to track which pages are using the template. Isn't that exactly what a tracking category is for? Thanks. BoonDock (talk) 16:34, 10 April 2023 (UTC)

And now you've added "MilAward Error". BoonDock (talk) 16:36, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
@BoonDock: Per the description at Template:Polluted category, "This template is designed to exclude categories that legitimately contain pages in both the (Main) namespace and the user namespace from Wikipedia:Database reports/Polluted categories." It seems these hidden/tracking categories could be on both articles and user pages, and therefore the categories shouldn't appear on the report. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 16:38, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
Aha. I have figured it out. Thank you. That makes a lot of sense. I thought it was doing exactly the opposite.. ;-) BoonDock (talk) 16:39, 10 April 2023 (UTC)

Help for review

Hello, I wrote an article about a Turkish actor about 3 months ago. I took the information from the Turkish Wikipedia article and translated it. But for a very long time no one cared. Can you please check this?

@Coshua23: Hi there! I see that you submitted the draft for review on 27 January, and that the message at the top of your draft states "This may take 4 months or more, since drafts are reviewed in no specific order. There are 3,829 pending submissions waiting for review." The fact that all the references are in Turkish may make it difficult for some reviewers on the English Wikipedia. I made some tweaks to the draft and posted a pair of comments for you. You may continue improving the draft while you are waiting for review. Happy editing! Hi GoingBatty, I'm not sure how to reply to you about the photo of Richard Meale I'm getting. Since I wrote I've had a reply from the National Archive saying " that the photograph you wish to use is now in the public domain and there are no copyright restrictions for its use. It would be appreciated if you could acknowledge the National Archives of Australia as the source of the image with the following citation." So no problem. I'm actually waiting for them to supply a high-res version of the photo. Thanks for noticing my problem. Erictimewell (talk) 07:59, 23 April 2023 (UTC)

@Erictimewell: Have we discussed this topic before? If so, please point me to that discussion. I suggest you point the National Archives of Australia to Wikipedia:Donating materials, so they can upload the photo themselves. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 13:18, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks GoingBatty. All is now in order. I'm just waiting for the Archives to send me the high-res version of the photo I've paid them for. Erictimewell (talk) 02:19, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
@Erictimewell: It would be better for them to upload the photo themselves, following the information at Wikipedia:Donating materials. GoingBatty (talk) 14:30, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
Noted. I'll see what I can do, or rather what they can do. Erictimewell (talk) 01:19, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

Page for company 1E gone, not included in new Disambiguation page

Hello,

I am a paid editor (employee of the company 1E), and I have requested two factual edits that have been approved to the page that formerly lived here. It was the page about the company I work for, 1E. Now the same URL is a disambiguation page and I cannot find the former page anywhere. I want to continue to provide factual, fully-disclosed edit requests under your mentorship--where does the company page live now? Thank you. FormerBaby (talk) 19:47, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

@FormerBaby: Hi there! The article was deleted - see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/1E. GoingBatty (talk) 01:36, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

please don't automatically replace alias template names

This edit replaces a bunch of "slink" templates with the name "section link" instead. This is unhelpful. Shortcut aliases are just fine, and often make the source more legible. Replacing them adds churn to page diffs, while accomplishing nothing. –jacobolus (t) 06:27, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

@Jacobolus: Replacing alias template names is one of AutoWikiBrowser's general fixes, specifically the Template Redirects section. The list of template redirects that AWB will change is at Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Template redirects.
If you'd like to discuss the replacement of the individual {{slink}} template, you can do so at Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Template redirects. Be sure to ping Mclay1, who added the redirects for {{Section link}} in this edit from March 30.
If you'd like to discuss the concept of template redirects in general, you can do so at Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser. Thanks, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 13:57, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

Draft Article: İlyas İlbey

As you said, I removed the categories. But I can't delete it from the box at the bottom of the page. When I click on the edit button, I can't see it in the source codes section. I assume you are using a wiki tool for this but I don't have it. Can you please do it for me? I also fixed a few errors in the content of the article.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:%C4%B0lyas_%C4%B0lbey Coshua23 (talk) 19:27, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

@Coshua23: Thank you for updating the categories. The remaining categories are populated by various templates in the wikicode. For example, {{Draft topics|biography|internet-culture|media}} generates the categories "Draft articles on biographies", "Draft articles on internet culture", and "Draft articles on media". I have changed the template to just {{Draft topics|biography}} to remove the "internet culture" and "media" categories. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 19:43, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

Hello. A couple of days ago you replied to my response about changing the diagram in the inbox for McGhee Tyson Airport. You said you needed a link to the diagram. The link is:

[[2]]

Hope this helps you. Also put on talk page. No responses yet. Thanks and have a good day.Theairportman33531 (talk) 18:52, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

@Theairportman33531: Hi there! When I wrote "The best place to ask would be the article's talk page: Talk:McGhee Tyson Airport. It would also be helpful if you could please provide a link to the most recent diagram.", I didn't mean that I needed a link to the diagram. I meant that it would be helpful to another editor if you could provide your link when you post on Talk:McGhee Tyson Airport. While I see you posted at Talk:McGhee Tyson Airport, I noticed you did not provide the link like you did here. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:21, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

Question from Prateekdash05 (09:04, 9 May 2023)

Hi, I would like to create a page for my University and NGO. Can you guide me on how to proceed? --Prateekdash05 (talk) 09:04, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

@Prateekdash05: Hi there! Creating a new Wikipedia article can be challenging, especially if you have a conflict of interest (COI). To learn how to edit, I suggest you start at Help:Introduction. I suggest spending a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills. When you're ready to create an article, you would gather multiple published independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of the university and NGO, and determine whether the sources demonstrate that the organizations meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". If so, you would declare your COI on your user page. Then follow the instructions at Help:Your first article, and be prepared for a process that may include months of waiting for review, rejections, and rewrites, before an article is created. If you are successful, then you could never edit the article directly if you have a COI, but could submit edit requests on the article's talk page. Hope this helps, and happy editing!. One question

Excuse me sir, what does |trans-title= mean? Does it mean adding "Translated title" against non-English sources? Alkanzas (talk) 10:41, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

CS1 error on Vaporwave

Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page Vaporwave, may have introduced referencing errors. They are as follows:

  • A "bare URL and missing title" error. References show this error when they do not have a title. Please edit the article to add the appropriate title parameter to the reference. (Fix | Ask for help)

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, Qwerfjkl (bot) (talk) 15:22, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

Draft: Christodoulos Panayiotou

Thank you for your help and feedback on my draft. I added the missing citations to the exhibitions as requested, but I am not understanding what you meant by "Please also remove the external links within the article per WP:EL." T-IC-2o23 (talk) 15:40, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

@T-IC-2o23: Hi there! WP:EL states "External links normally should not be placed in the body of an article." In Draft:Christodoulos Panayiotou#Dying on Stage you have wikilinks (links to Wikipedia articles) such as Stromboli which are good, and external links (links to web pages outside of Wikipedia) such as Festival d’Automne. Please remove all the external links from your draft, except those within references and those in the "External links" section. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 15:51, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
I see! Thank you for your help, I will make the changes now! T-IC-2o23 (talk) 16:00, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

Teahouse follow-up question

I posted a follow up at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Teahouse#JSTOR_in_citation. I'm not sure if you were notified. Mcljlm (talk) 01:21, 18 May 2023 (UTC)

@Mcljlm Thanks for the heads up. I wasn't notified because you signed the post in one edit and then added the {{U}} template in a separate edit. I've responded at the Teahouse, and hopefully you were notified. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 01:26, 18 May 2023 (UTC)
Originally I thought my replying would notify you. Then I added the ping, not realising you wouldn't be notified of either. Posting here was a kind of backup. Mcljlm (talk) 22:31, 18 May 2023 (UTC)
@Mcljlm: Sometimes I subscribe to sections of user talk pages, but not Teahouse or Help desk posts. I check the bottom of those pages often, but don't always scroll up to check every conversation. Thanks again! GoingBatty (talk) 01:00, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

Default Sort and Drag Queens

Battybot added a default sort for Killer Queen (drag queen) as to sort it as Queen, Killer. It is a *very* complicated mess as to whether a drag name consists of a surname and a given name (In a few cases it does, but it really is a case by case basis). While the bot certainly shouldn't do this for an article with a dab of (drag queen), I'm not sure what other characteristics should cause it not to do this. Maybe, if any category for the article includes (or more particularly ends with) drag queen, have it skip this. Thank You.Naraht (talk) 11:51, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

A related problem is that many names are unambiguous and thus unqualified, e.g. Baga Chipz. It may help that the article (which already has a DEFAULTSORT) is in Category:English drag queens. Certes (talk) 12:18, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
@Naraht: Thank you for letting me know about this problem. I agree that BattyBot should not be adding a {{DEFAULTSORT}} template. Therefore, I changed its AWB settings to restrict {{DEFAULTSORT}} change/addition. Thanks again, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 13:06, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
GoingBatty, thank you. And there are some that don't even get agreement over on WikiProject:DragRace. For example, Monica Beverly Hillz M, B, or H? (maybe a skip on the regex \[\[Category:[^]]drag queens\]\]Naraht (talk) 13:26, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
@Naraht: There are many other situations where sorting isn't as simple as "Surname, Forename" - see WP:NAMESORT. Best to have BattyBot avoid it altogether, and let the humans do it. GoingBatty (talk) 13:35, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
Fair enough. Sorry, if this limits Batty Bot's use across other articles. :(Naraht (talk) 14:45, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
@Naraht: It does not. The task BattyBot was doing in the edit in question was to remove Category:Year of birth missing (living people). Adding the DEFAULTSORT was just one of the general fixes that it's easy to turn off for future edits. GoingBatty (talk) 14:52, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
Ah, I've used that myself on AWB. Thanx.Naraht (talk) 14:55, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

battybot incorrectly grabbing and using whitespace

See here [3] https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AAnn_Bowers&diff=1157867879&oldid=1157435716 It grabbed whitespace after brackets and broke the signature formatting when it used the whitespace in signature move. s/^\s+// ConstantPlancks (talk) 17:27, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

@ConstantPlancks: When you are only adding WikiProjects or other templates to the top of a talk page, please don't sign your post. When you are adding a discussion to a talk page, please do sign your post. See WP:SIGNHERE for further info.
I've removed your signature from Talk:Ann Bowers. Please remove your signature from other talk pages where you only added WikiProjects. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 18:46, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

weird request

Can you sign me off on Second Class requirement 3C?

My response to the requirement: There are many possible hazards Scouts may experience while hiking. For example, during a hike where there are puddles or slick ground, a scout may slip. Contributor 118,784 (talk) 14:04, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

@Contributor 118,784: Hi there! Section 4.2.1.2 of the BSA's Guide to Advancement (page 19) states "The unit leader [i.e. your Scoutmaster] authorizes those who may test and pass the Scout on rank requirements. They might include the patrol leader, the senior patrol leader, the unit leader, an assistant unit leader, or another Scout." I doubt that your Scoutmaster will allow some random person on the internet to sign off your rank requirements. Ask your patrol leader or senior patrol leader who in your troop may sign off rank requirements. Then talk with an approved signer at your next meeting or camping trip to discuss this requirement and see if you can get it signed off. I hope you're going to summer camp in the next few weeks, where you should be able to get many requirements signed off and earn a few merit badges. Happy Scouting, and happy editing here on Wikipedia! GoingBatty (talk) 14:17, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
Yep, i'm going to Shenandoah. Godspeed, brother!! Contributor 118,784 (talk) 14:28, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
@Contributor 118,784: If you're going to participate in Camp Shenandoah's Timber Mountain Program (pages 9-10), you should cover many requirements, including the Second Class requirement 3C. GoingBatty (talk) 14:38, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
Yeah. My SM signed me up for First Aid and Emergency Preparedness among others. Contributor 118,784 (talk) 14:44, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
@Contributor 118,784: The requirement states "Describe some hazards or injuries that you might encounter on your hike and what you can do to help prevent them." Since the requirement says "some", I'd ask a Scout to be able to list more than one. For each hazard, I'd ask the Scout to explain how they would avoid injury (e.g. walk around the puddles when possible, walk slowly over slick ground, use a hiking stick). During the hike, I'd want to discuss the hazards again as we encounter them. GoingBatty (talk) 14:23, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

Thesis Defense

Hoow you're doing well. A couple years back you'd helped intervene on a thread about an editor chasing me between recent changes I'd made on a number of topics, and then recommended my own personal project still in development for deletion at the time as well. Having just shared an update from some recent news, I checked back on the thread from a couple years ago, noticed the content was missing and readded it, but I wanted to run it all past your perspective to get your thoughts. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions/Archive_1127#The_Wiki_Squid_Game_Trolling_Tournament_Theme_Song HenryMaxG (talk) 17:39, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

@HenryMaxG:: Hi there! I presume that you're referring to your addition to The Blue Danube article. I trimmed your addition - the "As cited..." phrase isn't needed, because you correctly cited the source as a reference. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 18:22, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

Richard Chandler Edit Request

Hi. I am the declared COI editor for Richard Chandler (businessman). I am reaching out to you because I saw you've previously edited a few pages Mr. Chandler is affiliated with, including KPMG. I have posted a pending edit request to update and expand the article; an editor came on and did one part, but the majority of the requested changes remain undone. BattyBot adding listas to biographies

Hi there,

Firstly, thank you for all the good work that your bot does! I wanted to raise the issue of it adding empty listas parameters to biographies. I know the listas paremeter is important as per Template:WikiProject Biography#Listas and it populates Category:Biography articles without listas parameter when undefined. However, from a selfish point of view it disrupts my work flow when using WP:RATER, as that tool doesn't auto-populate the parameter when it's already set as blank, so it's an extra step for me. I also realise the "proper" solution is to ask to get WP:RATER changed, which I will raise on the talk page for that too, so I'm not actually asking you to stop, just making sure you're aware. :-)

Example: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Indira_Raman&diff=prev&oldid=1163602661

Thanks. -Kj cheetham (talk) 11:14, 8 July 2023 (UTC)

@Kj cheetham: Hi there, and thanks for letting me know about this! I use Rater and was unaware of this issue, but confirmed that you are correct. I have the bot add the |class= and |listas= parameters in the hopes that it would inspire editors to add these manually.
Unfortunately, it's been a couple years since Evad37 has responded to anything on the Rater talk page, and Evad37 is not editing on a regular basis. The tool probably needs an overhaul to support the population of |class= and |listas= to be in the {{WikiProject banner shell}}.
I've just changed my bot so it doesn't add these empty parameters anymore. Thanks again! GoingBatty (talk) 14:36, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
GoingBatty, thanks for your reply! Personally, I suspect someone might need to fork the Rater tool at some point. People at Template_talk:WikiProject banner shell#Rating tool seem to be aware of the need to update it at least. -Kj cheetham (talk) 14:40, 8 July 2023 (UTC)

  • The New Pages Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles needing review. We could use a few extra hands to help.
  • We think that someone with your activity and experience is very likely to meet the guidelines for granting.
  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time, but it requires a strong understanding of Wikipedia’s CSD policy and notability guidelines.
  • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
  • If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please consider applying here.

Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see you around!

Draft: Javed Pathan

Hi Going Batty,

Thanks for your comments on my article draft Javed Pathan. Could you clarify something for me?

I received a Wikitia link about Javed Pathan with the same content. I wanted to know if the article will only be visible on Wikitia or on Wikipedia as well?

Is the Wikipedia page still being reviewed? I think I addressed all the changes you suggested.

Look forward to your response.

Thanks! Dee Drifts (talk) 19:53, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

@Dee Drifts: Hi there! I know nothing about "Wikitia". Draft:Javed Pathan was still waiting to be reviewed. I just reviewed it and declined it again, noting where additional references are needed. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:44, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
Hello, hello!
Thanks for your prompt responses, GoingBatty. I have added the citation as required, and deleted one information since there was only a YouTube link (and no news article) for the ad. For the Early Life and Family, I did add the citation at the end of the section since all the information is covered in the referenced news article.
I hope this suffices. *Fingers and toes crossed.*
Thanks a lot for your patience.
Best,
Dee Dee Drifts (talk) 19:06, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
@GoingBatty Hello again! Your comment on 13 July says "more citation needed". I have cited all the sources, I guess. Sorry can you pinpoint which one's missing?
Also, not clear about how I can use |trans-title= I tried to looked online but I'm still clueless. Please help.
Thanks Dee Drifts (talk) 13:06, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
@Dee Drifts: I have pinpointed where citations are missing by adding {{citation needed}} tags. In Template:Cite web#Examples, see the subsection on "Foreign language and translated title" for an exampe of the |trans-title= parameter. Happy editing! Question from DjangoBango123 (08:46, 16 July 2023)

Hey there, nice to meet you. I came on here to change some incorrect info on my companies page. I looked at your page and saw your projects. I've been using Wikipedia for years but never new there was so much work to maintain things. I fixed one of your CS1 flags by adding the authors actual name instead of CNN to an articles source :-D --DjangoBango123 (talk) 08:46, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

@DjangoBango123: Thank you! GoingBatty (talk) 23:43, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

Paul Glaser Profile

Hi @GoingBatty hi - am just about to post my first profile but seem to run into reference issues. how would i reference early life details? although there are no web sources, it is still perfectly factual information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Paul_Werner_Glaser Andipost (talk) 18:36, 26 July 2023 (UTC) Andipost (talk) 18:38, 26 July 2023 (UTC)

@Andipost: You don't have to use web sources for references. You may also cite information from books, magazines, and newspapers. I suggest using {{cite book}}, {{cite magazine}} and {{cite news}} respectively to show where you read the information in the draft. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 23:50, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

Orphan Page?

I've only used wikipedia once or twice and still learning so bare with me please. Recieved a message "This article is an orphan, as no other articles link to it. Please introduce links to this page from related articles; try the Find link tool for suggestions. (July 2023)". Not really sure what this means because article is linked to several articles on here so not sure how else to fix this? Also, it looks like you moved this also and now there 2 seperate pages that are not linked. So if you edit one, it deson't edit the other. Now, I'm confused of why you made a second page? Please explain. MUSTB (South Korean Band) & MUSTB. Imm1025 (talk) 00:12, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

@Imm1025: Hi there! I moved MUSTB (South Korean Band) to MUSTB since the disambiguator "(South Korean Band)" is unnecessary. This changed MUSTB (South Korean Band) from an article to a redirect. You then tried to change this, and I have reverted those changes.
It seems that the {{orphan}} template inspired you to add links from other articles to the MUSTB article, which is wonderful. Thanks, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 00:50, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
Ah. Thank you!! Imm1025 (talk) 01:00, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

WPBS vs. WPBio redundancy

Hey there, it's no big deal, but I noticed that your bot adds "living=yes" to the Biography WikiProject banner even if the WikiProject Banner Shell template is flagged as "blp=yes". I don't know if it's worth fixing this redundancy but I thought I'd bring it up. Cheers! GentlemanGhost (séance) 04:16, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

@GentlemanGhost My bot is designed to add the |living= parameter to those pages in the Category:Biography articles without living parameter because |living= is a required parameter of {{WikiProject Biography}}, even if the {{WikiProject banner shell}} template contains |blp=yes. Feel free to discuss at Template talk:WikiProject Biography if you'd like that template changed. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 13:10, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
@GoingBatty I will leave it be. Thanks for responding! GentlemanGhost (séance) 23:19, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

Question from Mariapark093 (23:56, 6 August 2023)

Hi, I'd like to add my grandfather to the list of headmasters for a school in Backup, Lancashire, England. I am citing 3 sources, all Census records that clearly show his record as a headmaster that is not reflected on the Wikipedia page. I'm new and don't know how to do it. --Mariapark093 (talk) 23:56, 6 August 2023 (UTC)

@Mariapark093: Hi there! I suggest you post your request on the article's talk page with the {{edit request}} template and the URLs of the sources, and an interested editor will be able to help you. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 23:59, 6 August 2023 (UTC)

Question from Rohansri10 (18:06, 11 August 2023)

Hi, how can i create a wikipedia page of myself? --Rohansri10 (talk) 18:06, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

@Rohansri10: Hi there! WP:AUTO explains that Wikipedia strongly discourages autobiographies. Creating a new Wikipedia article can be challenging, especially when you have a conflict of interest (COI). To learn how to edit, I suggest you start at Help:Introduction. I suggest spending a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills. When you're ready to create an article, you would gather multiple published independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of you, and determine whether they demonstrate that you meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". If so, you could create an account and declare your COI on your user page. Then follow the instructions at Help:Your first article and summarize what the sources have published, and be prepared for a process that may include months of waiting for review, rejections, and rewrites, before an article is created. If you are successful, then you could never edit the article directly due to your COI, but could submit edit requests on the article talk page. Hope this helps. Question from XlycanX (09:29, 15 August 2023)

Hello, In the wiki page Lodhi (caste), I made some changes by adding to their talk with reliable sources, which got approved by extended users or above. But someone again changed it back to way it was before. I can't directly make additions to it, as it's protected against vandalism. Kindly help me such that it can't be changed to the false information as portrayed. Thank you. --XlycanX (talk) 09:29, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

Question from Jdeshawn403 on Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines (00:18, 16 August 2023)

Hello, what's the best way to use Wikipedia? --Jdeshawn403 (talk) 00:18, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

@Jdeshawn403: Hi there! I find lots of value in reading Wikipedia articles about topics I was interested in, and if I find a typo in an article I fix it. If there is something in an article I don't understand or an article seems incomplete, I ask a question on the article's talk page to discuss with other editors. There are many other ways to contribute to Wikipedia - some are listed at the Wikipedia:Task Center. Does this answer your question? GoingBatty (talk) 00:34, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page Egypt–United Arab Emirates relations, may have introduced referencing errors.

Thanks, Qwerfjkl (bot) (talk) 14:41, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

Language codes preferred

Hi – in this edit you fixed the "unrecognized language" error by replacing hrv by "Croatian". According to Template:Citation Style documentation/language, "because cs1|2 templates are often copied from en.wiki to other wikis, the use of language codes is preferred so that language names render in the correct language and form"; I changed it to hr. Question from SDalton519 (07:22, 26 August 2023)

I discovered a link (stub) in an article on Mordecai Lincoln, Abraham Linclon's 2x great grandfather how lived in my township and whose wife was a member of my Quaker Meeting (Exeter Friends Meeting). I am the clerk of the Meeting and have created a website for us that has a history page. I assume the article would be a derivative of that page, but is there a place within the article to place a link to the website or page within the website? --SDalton519 (talk) 07:22, 26 August 2023 (UTC)

@SDalton519: Hi there! I'm not sure which article you're referring to, as the article Mordecai Lincoln seems to be about President Lincoln's uncle. The best place to discuss your question is on the article's talk page. I suggest you review Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:No original research. Happy editing! Battybot edit

Battybot edited Soa de Muse to put a Last Name, First Name default sort on it. Is the easiest way to keep it from doing it again to have a default sort that matches the full name of the article? (Soa de Muse is a French Drag Queen, and as such it really counts as close to a title than a normally sortable name. In general the decision at WP:RPDR is that Drag Race contestant names should not be sorted as "names" except in rare cases such as when they are competiting under their given name.Naraht (talk) 16:12, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

@Naraht: Hi there! I apologize for this error, and I appreciate you letting me know. I confirmed that the particular bot task is now set up to restrict DEFAULTSORT changes. I also manually added {{DEFAULTSORT:Soa de Muse}} to prevent other bots and humans from adding a different DEFAULTSORT value. Thanks, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:19, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
Curious on how it gets restricted. Thanx for the manual addition, I thought that might be enough to have Battybot ignore.Naraht (talk) 19:57, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
@Naraht: BattyBot uses the AutoWikiBrowser software, and there's an option is to "Restrict {{DEFAULTSORT}} change/addition". Yes, manually adding the DEFAULTSORT will be helpful for the Soa de Muse article, but I also want to ensure BattyBot doesn't make the same mistake on any other article. GoingBatty (talk) 20:02, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
If you'd like me to find the discussion of trying to alphabetize Drag Queens, I'll be happy to torture you in that way.Naraht (talk) 20:08, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
@Naraht: We've discussed the topic before when BattyBot made a similar incorrect edit. Both edits were made in November 2022. I'll leave the proper DEFAULTSORTing of those articles to those more knowledgeable, and my goal is to respect those decisions. GoingBatty (talk) 20:19, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
Ah. Sorry.Naraht (talk) 20:28, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

Bot Request

Thanks for your help with the Packers articles. I was expecting more articles than just four! There was another task I was going to submit. I was interested in getting two lists of articles from within Category:Green Bay Packers and its sub-categories:

  1. All articles assessed as a stub on the article talk page's WikiProject templates but that do not have a {{Stub}} template on the article page itself
  2. All articles with a {{Stub}} template on the article page but assessed as something other than a stub on the article talk page's WikiProject templates

Is this something you would be willing and able to produce? If not, happy to submit a request at WP:BOTREQ. Thanks, « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 17:46, 15 September 2023 (UTC)

I used the AutoWikiBrowser software to make the lists, and you don't need a bot account to use it. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 18:38, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much! :) Are you willing and able to complete the tagging of the articles with {{WikiProject Green Bay Packers}} in the last list if I go through the list and verify whether the tagging is appropriate? « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 19:46, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
@Gonzo fan2007 = Yes I am. GoingBatty (talk) 21:09, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
I knocked out the second list. Thanks! Made it super easy. Question on the third list: did you assess whether these have infoboxes as well? Also, regarding the first list, I have started going through it (see here). What I am doing is going to each article and assessing whether it is a stub. If it isn't, I am assessing the talk page templates as such and removing it from the list. Thus, my goal will be to whittle the list down to actual stubs that need stub sorting. Is this something you are capable of doing (my experience with stub sorting is really minimal, so bare with my ignorance). « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 16:05, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
@Gonzo fan2007: I did not assess whether the articles in the third list have infoboxes. Yes, I can help with stub sorting. Many of them would have a stub template within Category:American football biography stubs. GoingBatty (talk) 18:25, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
Awesome, well I will keep going at that list. Not sure how quickly I can get it done, but I will let you know. Then the last one will be reviewing the third list to make sure they are appropriate for WP:PACKERS, etc. Thanks! « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 20:19, 17 September 2023 (UTC)

Ok, so I went through the first list. I paired the list from 233 articles to 80 (see below). I reassessed 153 of these articles as start-class. Thus, the remaining list need stub templates and stub sorting. Are you able to do this? Is there anything you need from me? Thank you! « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 19:10, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

@Gonzo fan2007: Each of these articles now has a stub template. The 79 biographical articles now have {{Amfoot-bio-stub}}, but still need to be sorted into more specific templates. GoingBatty (talk) 02:14, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
@Gonzo fan2007: Stub sorting is now  Done. GoingBatty (talk) 04:13, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
Thank you!!! You said 79, but the list is 80. Was there a duplicate article? Just curious. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 14:19, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
@Gonzo fan2007: Your list of 80 articles contains 79 biographical articles plus Bellevue Park (stadium). GoingBatty (talk) 16:10, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
Gotcha! Thanks for the clarification. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 16:22, 21 September 2023 (UTC)

Ok, here is what I am thinking on the last list. Let me know what you think from a process standpoint:

  1. Tag all of the articles with {{WikiProject Green Bay Packers}}
  2. When tagging, fill out the parameters as such:
  3. When that is done, I will then go through each article and confirm the assessment, remove auto=inherit, assess for project importance and add an infobox if necessary.
  4. While I am doing that, would you then be able to run the previous two queries regarding the stub status (rated as a stub but no stub template and articles assessed as something else but with a stub template) and provide me lists again to work through. This would make sure that I didn't miss any on the previous lsits and cover the new 239 articles added to the WikiProject. Thank you so much for your insight and especially for your help. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 14:34, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
@Gonzo fan2007: I numbered the lists to make things easier. I'm presuming when you refer to "the last list", you mean list #3 Articles in Green Bay Packers category but not in Category:WikiProject Green Bay Packers articles. If so, I can tag those articles with {{WikiProject Green Bay Packers}} with |auto=inherit for all and |needs-infobox=yes if needed. I could also rerun lists #1 and #2. Please confirm before I start. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 16:19, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
Yes, that it correct, List #3. Your process as stated is what I am requesting. Thank you! « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 16:22, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
@Gonzo fan2007: I've added the WikiProject template to the talk page for each article in list #3. I also made some manual fixes to talk pages you edited, such as Talk:Danny Etling, because the WikiProject doesn't appear when you add it after the |blp=yes parameter. Here are your new lists:
1b. Updated list of articles in Category:Stub-Class Green Bay Packers articles without a stub template

  2. Ed Konopasek
  1. Auzoyah Alufohai

When you're done with all this, you might be interested in working on the Cleanup listing for WikiProject Green Bay Packers. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 14:49, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Going Batty. Can you check the edits though? Like here you add the inherit parameter but didn't actually assess the article by adding in the class parameter and rating it as a start. Here is another issue with the template parameters. Category:Automatically assessed Green Bay Packers articles is pretty much empty but should be filled with hundreds of articles.
Thanks for the note on the clean-up listing. I actually have slowly but surely been working on it for the last few weeks. Just often time-intensive work with all the citations issues. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 15:20, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
@Gonzo fan2007. Oh - I misunderstood the assignment. I only added |auto=inherit, not the |class= parameter. I'll have to think about how to properly add the |class= parameter with the appropriate value. GoingBatty (talk) 15:36, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
Gotcha. Typically the |auto=inherit parameter is added when the |class= parameter is filled out by a bot using the current assessment from other WikiProjects. As an example, Josh Warner is currently rated as a stub by four other WikiProjects. Thus, {{WikiProject Green Bay Packers}} would be rated as a stub, but with the |auto=inherit field filled out. This then allows human editors to audit the automatic assessment and then remove the |auto=inherit when the assessment is either confirmed or is updated to something else. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 15:42, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
You know what, I think I can just work off of Category:Unassessed Green Bay Packers articles. Did all of these have infoboxes? « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 17:14, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
@Gonzo fan2007: My bot is adding the |class= parameters now. All of these had infoboxes. GoingBatty (talk) 17:44, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
@Gonzo fan2007: Between your work and my bot, all the |class= parameters should now be added. I also reran the first two reports:
Have a great day! GoingBatty (talk) 19:04, 22 September 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much! I'm working through assessing them all for importance and removing the inherit parameter. About 80 left. After that I will work on the two lists (thank you for rerunning them! You read my mind). « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 19:06, 22 September 2023 (UTC)

"could refer"

I've come across "[wildcard] could refer to:" rather than "[wildcard] may refer to:". Is this something you could implement in AWB? Iterresise (talk) 06:38, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

@Iterresise: Yes, it's possible to configure AWB with any find and replace rule. I see the examples at MOS:DABPAGES all use "may refer to" or "may also refer to". I'm not sure that means "could refer to" is incorrect, as it is used on 1,174 pages. Is there a consensus for such a change? GoingBatty (talk) 06:49, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

Draft categories

On the tea house we spoke a bit about bots. As much as automatically making draft articles with active categories go into draft categories, I think an easier application that will be less controversial is fixing legacy category disabling.

The biggest issue I’ve personally had with it is that it seems many people using AWB convert categories in a draft categories template into links, which results in the draft categories template no longer working with hotcat and as a result accidental addition into mainspace categories Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (talk to the cutest Wikipedian) 18:30, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

@Immanuelle: Hi there! The behavior you are describing is not standard AWB functionality. When you see that happen, please revert the edits and send the people a kind note about the functionality of the {{Draft categories}} template. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 18:34, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

access-date

I could have sworn that access-date was for determining if a URL was live? AManWithNoPlan (talk) 16:27, 27 September 2023 (UTC)

@AManWithNoPlan: |access-date= is for documenting when you read the web page, and |url-status= is for documenting if a URL is live (but only if you're also using |archive-url=) - see Template:Cite web#URL. GoingBatty (talk) 16:34, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
The category now has about 125,000 fewer pages in it. I am now running the IABot on all of those pages. That will get many of the |url-status=dead with no |archive-url= pages fixed by adding the |archive-url=. All the remaining pages will then need |url-status=dead changed to {{dead link}}, which is what they should have had in the first place. AManWithNoPlan (talk) 13:51, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
But that should wait on https://iabot.wmcloud.org/index.php?page=viewjob&id=15322 and https://iabot.wmcloud.org/index.php?page=viewjob&id=15323 AManWithNoPlan (talk) 13:51, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

I should note that it appears that the remaining pages in the error category are pages with |url-status=dead set, but the Archive Bot as the URLs listed as dying/alive (some 404's are "alive"), so it does not add archives (or there are no archives). These should all be changed to the changed to {{dead link}} parameter, or removed. AManWithNoPlan (talk) 13:12, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

Question from Global Digitech Services (12:35, 3 October 2023)

can I add my company information on wikipedia? --Global Digitech Services (talk) 12:36, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

@Global Digitech Services: Hi there! Wikipedia is not a place to promote your company (see WP:NOT). Wikipedia has articles about topics that meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability" (see WP:NCORP). We get variations on this question frequently, so we have an essay to provide detailed answers (see WP:BOSS). Hope this answered your question. GoingBatty (talk) 13:16, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

Advice

Hi GoingBatty, on follow-ups on advice you requested I do on two occasions at the tea house to invite the decline reviewer to give specific reasons why he decline https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft_talk:Dekunle_Okunrinboye. On two different occasions I have invited him but he seems to ignore the invite, would like to ask what will you advice I do next ? But I recently added more source to the article. High Regards. Fmnoble (talk) 09:18, 30 September 2023 (UTC)

@Fmnoble: Hi there! I'm sorry that Jamiebuba did not respond to you. I wonder how many of the sources are paid/promotional/sponsored content (instead of being independent sources). When you believe you have provided "multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject", you may resubmit for review. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 23:24, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
@GoingBatty Thanks for pinging in. Unfortunately, I don't recall being pinged by @Fmnoble if not I would definitely have responded. If you have added more sources i will do a quick check on them later today or tomorrow to see if they're okay then leave a comment. Jamiebuba (talk) 07:25, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
Again, one of the reasons the article was declined in its initial stage was a bunch of PAID sources which I found. There's been a surge in Paid articles in Nigerian news websites like Sun Newspaper, Vanguard (Nigeria) and a few of them to mention. Anyways will check when I get the time to. Jamiebuba (talk) 07:31, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
@GoingBatty: Thank you for the help/ guidances, been able to find and add to the existing sources.@Jamiebuba: your dedication really a top notch. I appreciate you aswell because I have been able to learn from this process. High Regards. Fmnoble (talk) 12:15, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
@Fmnoble You're welcome. Glad to have helped. Jamiebuba (talk) 16:40, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
@Jamiebuba: I humbly look forward as you promised to look at the draft. Thank you once again. High Regards.Fmnoble (talk) 13:59, 3 October 2023 (UTC)
@Fmnoble & @Jamiebuba - I'm glad you're discussing this topic together. Could you please move continue this discussion to a more appropriate location, such as Draft talk:Dekunle Okunrinboye? Thanks, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 14:35, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

Question from XlycanX (10:04, 6 October 2023)

Hello. I am trying to add notables to the Lodhi (caste) for last 2 weeks. But since the page is protected against vandalism, I can't do it myself and also no users are looking towards that. Kindly help me for adding information to the page. Thankyou. --XlycanX (talk) 10:04, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

Question from LionFireKing404 (14:43, 11 October 2023)

Hi I've used wikipedia for ages but only became an official user last year and have only started to edit very recently, was wondering if you could show me the ropes a little bit? Thanks so much --LionFireKing404 (talk) 14:43, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

@LionFireKing404: Hi there! I suggest reviewing the information at Help:Introduction. Question from Loemargaretann8 on Shrinkhala Khatiwada (00:32, 14 October 2023)

I want to know what happens to Social Security and Medicare and Medicad when their isn’t a Speaker of the House --Loemargaretann8 (talk) 00:32, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

@Loemargaretann8: As far as I know, the Social Security/Medicare/Medicaid payments will continue during the October 2023 Speaker of the United States House of Representatives election. The challenge will be for the House to pass the 2024 United States federal budget without going into a shutdown. I reviewed the 2018–2019 United States federal government shutdown article and didn't see any mention of suspension of payments. Hopefully we won't have a 2023 United States federal government shutdown article! (It's only a redirect now.) GoingBatty (talk) 01:01, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

Draft:Sapartners

 – Added section header. GoingBatty (talk) 12:56, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi, referrring to your comment "Key projects and Prizes" on Draft:Sapartners. I added additional sources and removed projects/prizes where there is no independent source yet. I would be glad if you could have a look again. Schira05 (talk) 07:22, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

To consider

Hello GoingBatty, I was wondering if you would consider expanding the BOT task that removes "By" from the start of author fields. In this edit there is a |last2=Updated field that follows in the same cite template, could this be removed at the same time? Keith D (talk) 17:24, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

@Keith D: Yes, I've added a new line to find those situations and fix them - see this edit. I'll check the edits that BattyBot made in the last few days and see where it makes sense to revert and run again. Thanks for the suggestion! GoingBatty (talk) 18:05, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
Many thanks. I have fixed a few that have appeared on my watchlist. Keith D (talk) 18:08, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
@Keith D: I wonder what method Steven a91 used in this edit to get the incorrect |first=by Andy |last2=Updated in the first place. It would be wonderful to fix these problems at the source instead of trying to fix them after the fact. GoingBatty (talk) 19:22, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

I don't understand why the version from the October 8 was declined for being "improperly sourced" by @Johannes Maximilian ? Piotrus at Hanyang| reply here 07:40, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

Your draft cites way too many unreliable sources such as wenweipo or YouTube. It cannot be accepted in the the mainspace like this. --Johannes (Talk) (Contribs) (Articles) 12:31, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
@Johannes Maximilian This is not my draft. Ping the author @Yangpeifu . I see three references to  YouTube which unless they are reporting by proper journalists I concur should be removed or moved to external links per WP:SPS. I don't see a problem with Wen Wei Po, it is not at WP:RSP. In either case, I see only 4 uses of that source. Considering the article has 70 citations, if 10% of them are problematic (and that's assuming a problem with Wen Wei Po), I don't see a problem with publishing this. The few sentences tagged to problematic sources can be marked with {{citation needed}} or deleted outright per WP:V. Piotrus at Hanyang| reply here 09:40, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
@TheLonelyPather‎ re reliability of Wen Wei Po (I've never heard of this outlet since today, but on second check it is marked by the script for highlighting unreliable soruces I use, User:Headbomb/unreliable.js). But as far as I can tell, Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_306#RfC:_Wen_Wei_Po did not reach a consensus. Apparently I commented there, and as I said, it seems low quality but probably can be used with attribution for non WP:REDFLAG claims. I don't think it is being used for any controversial claims right now? Although I concur it would be good to replace then, few citations to this given few dozen of other good quality citations should not disqualify article from being published. The source has not been depraciated and is still used on Wikipedia: search. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 09:47, 27 October 2023 (UTC)

November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello GoingBatty:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 1000 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

CS1 error on Hinugot sa Langit

Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page Hinugot sa Langit, may have introduced referencing errors. They are as follows:

  • A "bare URL and missing title" error. References show this error when they do not have a title. Please edit the article to add the appropriate title parameter to the reference. (Fix | Ask for help)

Hello,

I just noticed that your bot removed the dead end tag from School of Meditation when the only wikilinks in the article were from the ISBN fields in the references. I am wondering if this ought not to count towards not being a dead end? What do you think?

Bensci54 (talk) 15:25, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

@Bensci54: At the time BattyBot removed the {{dead end}} template (link), there were three wikilinks to [[ISBN (identifier)|ISBN]] (one in a reference, and two in the "Further Reading" section). The editor should have used citation templates or {{ISBN}} to create the links instead of the ISBN wikilinks. I don't think it's a common enough issue to report to the AWB developers. Thanks for letting me know! GoingBatty (talk) 15:39, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

Hello, how do I move a Wikipedia page which I created from the Sandbox to the Homepage? --Diegg24 (talk) 14:25, 4 November 2023 (UTC)

@Diegg24 - According to Help:How to move a page, you cannot do so yet. Looking at User:Diegg24/sandbox, it's not ready to be an article.
  • While you have references, you have no footnotes (see Help:Footnotes)
  • The table should be changed to {{Infobox settlement}}
  • The Index and Climate sections should contain text or be removed

Author param has generic name

In this edit seen here, the edit summary reads: Removed/fixed author parameter(s) to remove article from Category:CS1 errors: generic name. But all the bot did was change the cite error from last= has generic name to first= has generic name, as seen here, and also here. What's the point of these edits? I'm seeing quite a few of these bot edits showing up in Category:CS1 errors: missing name. Of course the proper solution is to actually fix the citation error completely. Just thought you might want to know. Isaidnoway (talk) 🍁 03:45, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

And also this edit, is now just changing the cite error to first is missing last, also here, here, here, here, and more generic name and generic name. I actually had that missing name cat whittled down to around 219 yesterday, but as of this timestamped edit, it is back up to 333. Seems kind of silly to me to remove a citation error from one cat and move it to another cat. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ - Isaidnoway (talk) 🍁 04:11, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
@Isaidnoway: Thank you for letting me know about this issue. I need to add some more code to properly deal with instances where |last=Reuters also has a |first= parameter, to do this. Some edge cases should be fixed manually like this. I'll go through the category to see if there were any other instances where my bot added an article there. Thanks again! GoingBatty (talk) 05:14, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
Sure that works, but in your first example, there was actually a named author and a date, plus the link was dead as well, which I fixed here. I think a lot of those cite errors are generated by the citation tool an editor chooses to use (and not using show preview to check their work), and in the case of Reuters, it adds those 'generic' names, and actually if you scroll to the bottom of the article, you can find the author's name. Thanks for looking into it though. I appreciate it. Isaidnoway (talk) 🍁 05:33, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
@Isaidnoway: I looked at the last 3000 edits my bot made, and found 64 of those were in Category:CS1 errors: missing name. I reverted those edits, and will tackle them more slowly to ensure the edits are correct. Thanks again! (P.S. When you're done plowing through that category, feel free to help with the 28,000+ in Category:CS1 errors: generic name.) GoingBatty (talk) 05:31, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

Goodbye Little Darlin change title

I am trying to update/correct the following article and need help changing title. All is explained here:

Talk:Goodbye_Little_Darlin'

You helped me with Be Honest with Me, which I appreciate. Tillywilly17 (talk) 02:41, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

@Tillywilly17: Replied at the talk page. GoingBatty (talk) 03:08, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

You can't (effectively) edit that page directly. The entire content is assembled by a bot every few minutes, and all manual changes are erased. If you need to comment in or change an existing RM listing or add a new one, that is done at the talk page of the page to be moved. See also Template:Rm.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  14:04, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

@SMcCandlish: Thank you for the note. I saw all the big warnings after a bot quickly overwrote my edit. So I edited the source to remove the error, and eventually the bot updated the page. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:39, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

Any chance you would be interested in taking on this task? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:25, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

@MSGJ: All my bots use AutoWikiBrowser, whose code hasn't been updated for the changes to {{WikiProject banner shell}}. Plus, I don't know how I could configure it to look at multiple WikiProject class parameters and make determinations on what class parameter to populate in the banner. Sorry! GoingBatty (talk) 22:42, 15 November 2023 (UTC)
Okay, no worries. It's quite a complicated one to code. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:48, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from AlexTheAwkward (15:43, 16 November 2023)

Hi Batty; I'm excited to join the Wikipedia contributor pool! I've just nominated a page for deletion because I believe it does not fit notability requirements; is there any advice you can give me for making sure I've done so correctly? --AlexTheAwkward (talk) 15:43, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

@AlexTheAwkward: Hi there! Here are my suggestions:
  • The {{AfD notice}} template goes on the user talk pages (not the article) to warn the creators and principal contributors that the article has been nominated. Another editor removed it from the article at the same time I tried to do so.
  • When you post the {{AfD notice}} on a user talk page, add a new section to the bottom of the page to keep the conversations in chronological order (see Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines). I've moved your post on User talk:Davidpatrick.
  • If you haven't done so already, please see WP:BEFORE to review what to do before nominating an article for deletion.
Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:20, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
@GoingBatty: Thank you for the help! I'll make sure to remember to keep conversations in chronological order (among the other things). AlexTheAwkward (talk) 17:33, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Gurdas Singh atwal on User:Gurdas Singh atwal/sandbox (14:07, 19 November 2023)

my article is not submitting and i want to add images in starting --Gurdas Singh atwal (talk) 14:07, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

@Gurdas Singh atwal: It looks like you have added many images to your draft. However, images are not necessary to have a draft accepted. The reviewer DoubleGrazing gave some good feedback to you. Creating a new Wikipedia article can be challenging, especially if you do not have a lot of experience editing existing Wikipedia articles. To learn how to edit, I suggest you start at Help:Introduction. I suggest spending a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills before returning to your draft. Question from Shaikh Iqbal Masud (02:12, 20 November 2023)

plz help me to create wikkipidea --Shaikh Iqbal Masud (talk) 02:12, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

@Shaikh Iqbal Masud: Hi there! I presume you are asking for help creating a new Wikipedia article. Creating a new Wikipedia article can be quite challenging, especially if you do not have a lot of experience editing existing Wikipedia articles. To learn how to edit, I suggest you start at Help:Introduction. I suggest spending a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills. Once you're ready to create an article, you would gather multiple independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of the subject, and determine whether it meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". If so, you could follow the instructions at Help:Your first article and summarize what the sources have published, and be prepared for a process that may include waiting for review, declines, and rewrites before an article is created. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 02:16, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Attention parameter

If there are any more of those requests, could you empty the category and tag for deletion? Those categories should not be manually added. Thanks — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:25, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

@MSGJ: I agree that the categories should not be manually added. For many articles, I'm removing the category from the article and adding the parameter in the WikiProject template on the talk page. I don't want to empty the category unless the WikiProject decides the category should be removed. For example, in Template talk:WikiProject Haiti, the decision was made to add the parameter. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 17:33, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
@MSGJ: I provided this answer before noticing that you've emptied the categories and tagged them for deletion. I will do the same. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 17:56, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
@MSGJ: In addition to attention categories being incorrectly applied to articles, I'm also seeing categories for needs infoboxes and needs articles manually added, so I'm working through those too. GoingBatty (talk) 17:34, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

I noted your decline on October 31 of the Draft:Bryan Corbett article I am working on due to a lack of referencing in the Education section of the draft. Since then, I have updated the section with the proper citations, proving his graduation at both his undergraduate and graduate school. If you could please review that again I would appreciate it.

AdPython (talk) 16:45, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

@AdPython: Hi there! I made some updates to the draft and reviewed each source. I don't think you have enough independent sources that provide significant coverage of Corbett. Here are my thoughts about each reference:
  1. Press release - not independent
  2. Interview - not independent
  3. One line about Corbett - not significant coverage
  4. Based on press release - not independent
  5. Needs a subscription I don't have
  6. Needs a subscription I don't have
  7. Written by Corbett - not independent
  8. One sentence interview - not independent or significant
  9. Written by Corbett - not independent
Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 21:05, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
Hi @GoingBatty,
I understand your thoughts about the nonindependent sources. I will find a way to best address that. However, for the paywall issue – I do not see a way to reconcile this, as these are legitimate and independent sources. One significant coverage piece I would like to consider is an article from Bloomberg (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-01-08/carlyle-partner-tapped-by-hedge-fund-industry-to-run-lobby-group). There is a paywall on this as well, however, I think this would best mitigate the issues with #7 and #9 (which were written by Corbett). I also want to note that I have addressed your initial issue with the draft: citations for the education section. Is it possible to update your decline based on your recent review?
~~~ AdPython (talk) 17:07, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
@AdPython: I will strike through my comment to acknowledge that you resolved that issue. You are allowed to have paywalled sources, and I will choose to not review an article where I need to review the paywalled sources to make a decision. When you're ready, you can resubmit the draft for review, and someone else will review it. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 18:14, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
help regarding new page
hi, I have contributed to this page: User:HishamMansourJamaanAlJamaanpage/sandbox. kindly check if it fulfills all the criteria needed to be accepted as a wikipedia article? also, do give suggestions on how to improve it for being notable. thanks. Amyhere (talk) 19:14, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
@Amyhere: Hi there! It appears you had a draft at User:Amyhere/sandbox that was deleted, and now you're working on a draft at the link above, which makes me wonder about the relationship between the two Wikipedia user IDs. I see you uploaded several photos of Hisham Mansour Jamaan Al Jamaan as your "Own work". Between the photos and the wording of the draft, I wonder if you have a conflict of interest. If you work for the person or the company, then you must make a paid-contribution disclosure. If you have any other relationship with him, you must make still declare your conflict. If you're in contact with him, I suggest you have him read WP:AUTO and Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing.
Wikipedia articles must be built based on independent published reliable sources. Of your six sources, references #1, #2, #4, and #6 are not independent. References #3 and #5 are in Arabic, so I won't comment on those since I cannot read Arabic. When creating a draft (after disclosing any conflict), you should gather your independent reliable sources and write the draft based on what those sources have written. See WP:BACKWARD and Help:Your first article. Hope this helps! GoingBatty (talk) 19:39, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
ok thanks a lot. I have made the disclosure on the talk page of that article. The two sources in arabic are actually independent sources. They are from news. The 4 are related to Hisham and available on the personal website only. Please do tell if its ready for submission or needs improvement. Amyhere (talk) 20:00, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
@Amyhere: I made some minor tweaks for you. You should add references for the certificates of participation (or remove them from the draft). I cannot tell whether references #3 and #5 adequately demonstrate that he meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". GoingBatty (talk) 20:12, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
Ok thanks. I have pics of certificates actually but can't disclose them publically, so I guess its better to remove these. Anyhow, thanks alot Amyhere (talk) 20:14, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
Regarding this edit, you will notice there are three copies of the US project banner. Would you be able to look into getting these consolidated as part of your other changes? I appreciate this may not be a simple task! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:32, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
@MSGJ: I have a separate bot task that would have removed the empty {{WikiProject United States}} template, but I haven't come up with a way to consolidate WikiProjects with different parameters. GoingBatty (talk) 14:07, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Quick Question
Hi, GoingBatty. I have a question regarding your bot; I'm not sure if you know this.
In Task 32 it fixes Category:Pages which use a template in place of a magic word, so most of the time there's no need for users to do something there, even when it's not empty.
However, if someone stumbles into that category, there's no mention that a bot is actually fixing it.
Is there a template or something that could be added so others (including me) could see that the bot is working there?
I don't know if this has been discussed before or if this already exists somewhere; I didn't find anything on it. Regards Nobody (talk) 10:16, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
This is a good idea! Perhaps a parameter that could be added to {{Maintenance category}} — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:33, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
My idea for this would be something like: |bot1=[[User:BattyBot]]|bot-task1=[[Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/BattyBot 32|32]]
Which would show something like: "This category is used by the bot: BattyBot, see the relevant task here: 32"
This could also work if a category is used by multiple bots or tasks. I don't know if there is already a text that can be used for this, so I wrote something that sounds right. Nobody (talk) 12:53, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
@1AmNobody24: Hi there! Based on the note at Category:CS1 errors: invisible characters, I added a note about BattyBot to Category:Pages which use a template in place of a magic word. GoingBatty (talk) 14:13, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Could you do this on the other categories too? Tasks: 30, 46, 64, 65, 67, 69. Thanks Nobody (talk) 14:21, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
@1AmNobody24:  Done for tasks 30, 46, 64, 65, 67 with a note encouraging editors to fix their own errors.  Not done for task 69, since it already has a note for Citation bot. GoingBatty (talk) 15:41, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Added orphan tag - Rungta College Bhilai, 05:10, 25 November 2023
Hi I Noticed that you added an orphan tag to the page - Rungta College Bhilai , I have added some relevant article links to it. I hope this helps. If if does, please make appropriate changes. Thanks MSatindia (talk) 16:43, 25 November 2023 (UTC)
@MSatindia:  Done! In the future, when you resolve an issue on an article, you may remove the tag yourself. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:51, 25 November 2023 (UTC)
@MSatindia: Oops, sorry about that! I have a bot task to remove {{orphan}} templates when they're no longer needed, and thought I started it running when I gave my first reply. I just noticed that the bot was not running and you removed the template yourself.
Draft: Wikipedia: a surprisingly reliable site
You denied my article submission because another article already exists. I acknowledge the existence of my sister article: Reliability of Wikipedia. Even though I acknowledge her, I disagree with your decision, since my draft adds new information to the fight for credibility of Wikipedia. It contributes to Reliability of Wikipedia and backs it up with more information, and then Wikipedia users can find more information on the topic than simply one article. While Reliability of Wikipedia has a lot of information, my article can add a bit more, and it acknowledges the false misconception in schools, unlike Reliability of Wikipedia. AriLovesTacos (talk) 01:39, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
@AriLovesTacos: I did not deny Draft:Wikipedia: a surprisingly reliable site. I ran some bots to clean up your references and added a comment. Your draft (and your user talk page) lists the editor who declined (not denied) your draft. GoingBatty (talk) 02:56, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Question from Medicmarnie (04:21, 30 November 2023)
How do I create a page to document my public work as a elected public figure? --Medicmarnie (talk) 04:21, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
@Medicmarnie: Hi there! WP:AUTO explains that Wikipedia strongly discourages autobiographies. Creating a new Wikipedia article can be quite challenging, especially when you have a conflict of interest (COI). To learn how to edit, I suggest you start at Help:Introduction. I suggest spending a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills. When you're ready to create an article, you would gather multiple published independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of you, and determine whether they demonstrate that you meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". If so, you could create an account and declare your COI on your user page. Then follow the instructions at Help:Your first article and summarize what the sources have published, and be prepared for a process that may include months of waiting for review, declines, and rewrites, before an article is created. If you are successful, then you could never edit the article directly due to your COI, but could submit edit requests on the article talk page. Hope this helps. Hello, I posted a new article that was frequently being sent to Draft by someone else, now I want to find that article where do I find it? --Raksiyyyy (talk) 09:29, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
Notory Art
I made the page corrections as indicated on the Notory Art. Draft:Notory Art - Wikipedia . I noticed that the editing page is different in its format than what I was originally working with. Please double check that this is satisfactory. If not, please direct me. I'm new. Haplo1990 (talk) 15:05, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
@Haplo1990: Hi there! I've made some more tweaks to the format. In the last bullet in the Editions section, I don't understand what "_____." should represent. GoingBatty (talk) 02:23, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
I fixed it. Just needed to ENTER to move it to the next line. The blank space represents the author's name. Rather than repeating his name for another source that he wrote, a blank space is common practice in bibliography writing. Haplo1990 (talk) 15:33, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
@Haplo1990: I was wondering if that was the case, but it wasn't clear to me. Thanks for fixing it, and congratulations on having your draft become an article! GoingBatty (talk) 15:37, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
new draft article
Hi - You have replied to a few of my questions over the last few weeks about my submittal of a draft article for review - "Robert E. (Bob) Bourke" I was informed yesterday by some Teahouse folks that I did NOT submit the article on 11/28! However, on 11/28 I did click the blue "submit" button. These folks suggested I click the "Submit" button now, but I cannot locate it anywhere! Is it hidden someplace else? How can I confirm whether I have submitted the piece, or not? A profound thank you for your help with this quandary. Legendt9455 (talk) 22:42, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
@Legendt9455: Hi there! Viewing the history Draft:Robert E. Bourke Jr., I see where you created the draft, but not where you submitted it for review. In this edit when I added a comment to your draft, it incorrectly removed the submission template, which is why you couldn't find the submit button. I apologize for that issue. I've restored the template for you and requested a bug fix to the Articles for creation team. I suggest you do not submit the draft for review until you fix the footnotes. Also, there are a few paragraphs in the "The Years After Studebaker" section that have no footnotes at all, which should be fixed before submission. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 23:25, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for your prompt helpful reply, and I found the submit button! Is it correct that by fixing the footnotes the main issues are moving the citations to the right place in the paragraphs and citing the actual relevant page numbers? The lack of Footnotes in "The Years After Studebaker" are due to the fact that this is personal knowledge based on the fact that Robert Bourke Jr. was my father and I retained many of his personal and business records and have communicated over the years with past business acquaintances (which I could and will footnote.) Legendt9455 (talk) 16:45, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
@Legendt9455: Proper footnotes is one issue. I am not going to attempt to verify which references are independent reliable published sources. Thanks for your prompt reply! One last question: I can pull up my "draft" piece from clicking through your blue "Draft: Robert E. Bourke Jr." above, log in and edit it there. At the point I assume I can click "publish changes", followed by clicking "submit the draft for review."
Is this the best procedure to move forward?   Legendt9455 (talk) 16:56, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
Page Review!
Dear @GoingBatty Hello, Requesting you to Please Review this Page Draft:Dwaraka Creations
and suggest me changes for the page creation.
Thankyou! Mr.shaikmeer (talk) 17:11, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
@Mr.shaikmeer: Hi there! I made some edits to your draft to fix the formatting, capitalization, and grammar. Although this is a draft about Dwaraka Creations, there is very little information about the company itself in the draft. What have the independent reliable published sources written about the company itself, besides information about the films they have produced? Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 18:10, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Dear @GoingBatty can’t thanks enough. thanks for editing.
From the google itself the Independent articles about Dwaraka Creations were not Published !
what Should i do now for the Page to be Accepted by the Reviewer?
Requesting You to Please Suggest me the needful.
Thankyou! Mr.shaikmeer (talk) 18:21, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
@Mr.shaikmeer: In order to show that Dwaraka Creations meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability", you'll need to find multiple independent published reliable sources that provide significant coverage of the company. You can use sources that are not online, such as newspapers, magazines, and books. GoingBatty (talk) 18:28, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the Information, Can you please guide me how to upload or keep the offline sources in the draft ? Mr.shaikmeer (talk) 18:33, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
@Mr.shaikmeer: You don't have to upload copies of offline sources to Wikipedia. You can use {{cite news}}, {{cite magazine}}, or {{cite book}} to provide other people enough information to find the materials themselves. GoingBatty (talk) 18:44, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Thankyou so much !!
I do have an other Draft article.If you don’t mind can you please look take a look on that ? Draft:VJ Sunny Mr.shaikmeer (talk) 18:51, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
@Mr.shaikmeer:  Done! In the tables in both drafts, I don't understand why you have some citations in the Film column and others in the Notes column. GoingBatty (talk) 19:21, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
In the film column the citations represent the movie and in the Notes column the citation represents the review of the movie! Mr.shaikmeer (talk) 19:25, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Dear @GoingBatty Hello, Done with the changes mentioned by you for the draft Draft:VJ Sunny.
Now, the Page has enough Independent Sources. Requesting you to please Accept the Submission.
Thankyou! Mr.shaikmeer (talk) 15:21, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
@Mr.shaikmeer: I removed the maintenance template I added and made some other minor fixes. Footnotes #3 and #6 are not in the right place. Help:Referencing for beginners states that inline citations "are generally added either directly following the fact that they support, or at the end of the sentence that they support, following any punctuation." GoingBatty (talk) 18:34, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
@GoingBatty Thankyou so much, I Made that changes Mentioned by you. You can accept the submission this time as well. Mr.shaikmeer (talk) 05:20, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
@Mr.shaikmeer I made a few more tweaks for you, and will leave the draft for someone else to review. GoingBatty (talk) 05:34, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
Thankyou @GoingBatty, I really Appreciate it! Mr.shaikmeer (talk) 05:40, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
one last question @GoingBatty, I have the instagram picture of VJ Sunny and i want to upload that on the article without getting copyright issues, can you please guide me the process to do so ? Mr.shaikmeer (talk) 06:18, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
@Mr.shaikmeer: If you are not the photographer, then do not upload the photo. If you are the photographer, then declare your conflict of interest and use the Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard. GoingBatty (talk) 15:21, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
Done, Thanks @GoingBatty 😊 Mr.shaikmeer (talk) 15:56, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
Question from Dj Baby Black4life (21:15, 13 December 2023)
How can I write about myself here --Dj Baby Black4life (talk) 21:15, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
@Dj Baby Black4life: Hi there! WP:AUTO explains that Wikipedia strongly discourages autobiographies. Creating a new Wikipedia article can be quite challenging, especially when you have a conflict of interest (COI). To learn how to edit, I suggest you start at Help:Introduction. I suggest spending a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills. When you're ready to create an article, you would gather multiple published independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of you, and determine whether they demonstrate that you meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". If so, you must declare your COI on your user page. Then follow the instructions at Help:Your first article and summarize what the sources have published, and be prepared for a process that may include months of waiting for review, declines, and rewrites, before an article is accepted. If you are successful, then you could never edit the article directly due to your COI, but could submit edit requests on the article talk page. Hope this helps. Thanks for uploading File:Zadruga logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 18:48, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
You requested that this page be moved from article space to draft space. You were right in asking to have it moved out of article space. However, it does not appear to be a biography of a living person. Three of the five references are obituaries stating that he died in 2008. Two of them say that he was born in 1934. Either the date of birth is completely wrong, or there are two people with the same name in the same business, maybe father and son. I have not decided whether to send it to MFD. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:55, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
@Robert McClenon: I didn't look at the references. I just read the first line: "Mitsuhiro Matsuda is a famous Japanese fashion designer who was born 1994". GoingBatty (talk) 02:45, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
Yes. You made a reasonable request, based on the article. In the meantime, I reviewed the references to see whether the article should be sent to AFD, and concluded that it should be sent to AFD. But before I tagged it for AFD, it was draftified. We both knew that it didn't belong in article space. I have Rejected the draft. Thank you for noticing that it didn't belong in article space. Robert McClenon (talk) 03:51, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
@Robert McClenon: Sorry for inadvertently interrupting your AFD. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 03:52, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
Question from CSMention269 (12:43, 17 December 2023)
Hi, I just wanted to know how can I create new articles, mainly biography of living/deceased person.of Indian politicians? Can you give any suggesstions. --CSMention269 (talk) 12:43, 17 December 2023 (UTC)
@CSMention269: Hi there! Creating a new Wikipedia article can be quite challenging, especially if you do not have a lot of experience editing existing Wikipedia articles. To learn how to edit, I suggest you start at Help:Introduction. I then suggest spending a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills. Once you're ready to create an article, you would gather multiple independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of the subject, and determine whether it meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". (For politicians, the more specific criteria is at WP:POLITICIAN.) If so, you could follow the instructions at Help:Your first article and summarize what the sources have published, and be prepared for a process that may include waiting for review, declines, and rewrites before an article is accepted. Re-contact de Philbobison
Hello, GoingBatty,
A few months ago, you kindly helped me improve my first draft "A yellow butterfly called Sphinx". I have been working hard on it since then. I think it is now much better and I would be delighted if it could be published shortly. It would be a good way to start a new year with wikipedia ! But the problem is English is not my mother tongue and some sentences might be awkward or incorrect. So, please, would you accept to have a look at my draft and tell me what is wrong, or if it make you spare time, would you directly correct what. is wrong? I am looking forward to hear from you. Sincerely. Philbobison
Draft:A Yellow Butterfly Called Sphinx Philbobison (talk) 07:54, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
@Philbobison: Hi there! I make some layout and copyediting fixes for you. For the Synopsis section, it's OK to state the ending of the play - see MOS:PLOT. Good luck with your draft! GoingBatty (talk) 16:07, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
When a tearoom questioner asks about copying
Hi. I noticed your response at the Tea house when a user asked about article content copied from an external website. If it really was copied from a copyrighted source, that is one of the most serious violations at Wikipedia, as it violates both our WP:Terms of use as well as copyright law, and as such, it is one of a very small number of violations with legal implications (others include libel, legal threats, and there are a couple others) that require immediate attention and that are not subject to amendment by policy, consensus, ArbCom, or WP:IAR. Content in violation of copyright cannot be left in the article, and not only that, it must be expunged from the page history by an admin, so that no trace of it is left in Wikipedia. As far as what to advise a user, probably the simplest and best response is to tell the user to place a {{Copyvio}} template on the article page itself; this will both immediately hide the suspected offending material, as well as signal an admin to have a look at it and assess the situation for further action. Users should not be told to simply remove the content themselves, or to rewrite or summarize copied content, because that masks the continuing problem of copyrighted content which remains accessible in the page history; it's best just to flag it for admin action with the template. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 00:10, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
@Mathglot: Thanks for your advice, and for sharing it with the OP as well. GoingBatty (talk) 04:08, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
Question from Kimicarson (04:10, 27 December 2023)
Can I write an autobiography or article about my nonprofit? --Kimicarson (talk) 04:10, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi there! WP:AUTO explains that Wikipedia strongly discourages autobiographies, WP:NOTPROMO explains that Wikipedia isn't a place to promote your organization. Creating a new Wikipedia article can be quite challenging, especially when you have a conflict of interest (COI). To learn how to edit, I suggest you start at Help:Introduction, and then spend a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills. When you're ready to create an article, you would gather multiple published independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of you or your nonprofit, and determine whether they demonstrate that you or it meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". There are separate notability criteria for people and notability criteria for organizations. If so, you would declare your COI on your user page, and then follow the instructions at Help:Your first article and summarize what the sources have published. Be prepared for a process that may include months of waiting for review, declines, and rewrites, before an article is accepted. If you are successful, then you could never edit the article directly due to your COI, but could submit edit requests on the article talk page. Hope this helps. Did you change Draft:Legend Airlines (Romania)?
Did you change it so it would be okay for approval or is it just to remove "excess / not needed" info? Poyeker (talk) 12:28, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
@Poyeker: When you go to Draft:Legend Airlines (Romania) and click "View history", you can see that the edits I made in these edits were the following:
  • Bolded the article title
  • Removed spaces before the <ref> tag
  • Changed "varying" to "various"
  • Changed "Human Trafficking" to "human trafficking"
  • Added a "References" section
I did not remove any information from the draft. In these edits today, I added citation templates to the bare URLs.
The reformatting I've done to the draft will help it to look pretty and help you understand how an article should be formatted. However, the submission declined notice at the top of the draft states "the draft needs multiple published sources that are: in-depth (not just brief mentions about the subject or routine announcements), reliable, secondary, strictly independent of the subject. Make sure you add references that meet all four of these criteria before resubmitting." Good luck with your draft! GoingBatty (talk) 14:54, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Question from CapehistoricalSociety (13:28, 4 January 2024)
The original wikipedia post on Parow has a couple of inaccuracies, as well as the references to the information is mostly broken links or it pertains to something other than historical fact.
I have information that Johann Heinrich Ferdinand Parow did not arrive in Table Bay with a ship named the Kehrwieder, but with the Gem, and the article makes it seemed as if he was shipwrecked here, while in fact his ship was berthed during the great storm of 1865... He had been here a week before the storm, yet the author shows that he felt the storm.
Furthermore, Johann and Johannah Parow bore a boy child, yet the author does not mention this... instead says the couple was childless.
Captain Parow could have founded Parow if the well known Starke and Duminy families had been farming the area as well as his family in law the Timmermans that assisted him.
This is the second account I have created. In that first account I received a lot of pushback from the editing committee when I tried to highlight some of the FAKE history in articles, so I hope I can be of assistance...I have collected over a thousand inaccuracies of wikipedia and re-posted them as #joumasepaedia on my own fb group; Cape Historical Society. --CapehistoricalSociety (talk) 13:28, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
@CapehistoricalSociety: Hi there! The best place to provide feedback (along with published reliable sources) is the article's talk page (e.g. Talk:Parow, South Africa). I don't know why you created a second account instead of continuing to use your first account. I'll leave a note on your talk page about the name of this account. There is no "editing committee" - everyone is a volunteer editor, and you can be one too! If you'd like to start editing, I suggest reviewing Help:Introduction. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 15:03, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Question from Mamasaurus34 (16:18, 4 January 2024)
HI, I've written an article in my User page section and pressed publish. Please advise how I can get this reviewed and published so that it goes live. Thanks. --Mamasaurus34 (talk) 16:18, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
@Mamasaurus34: Hi there! I have moved your page to Draft:John Cameron (TV presenter) and added the {{AfC submission}} template to the top. Please read it carefully and ensure you have enough published reliable sources that provide significant coverage of Cameron before you submit it for review. I'll make some more tweaks to your draft so it better conforms with Wikipedia's Manual of Style. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 17:08, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I've also cleaned up the article a bit and removed some extraneous detail. I think my principal concern is that article gave me the impression he was a presenter of Bargain Hunt (whatever happened to David Dickinson?) but he's actually just one of several experts who is called on. As an analogy, Jay Blades has an article, but most of The Repair Shop experts and restorers don't. So, all that said, I've put the draft up for review, as I suspect there will be a decision to either keep the article or turn it into a redirect to Bargain Hunt. Question from LionFireKing404 (15:32, 9 January 2024)
In the new page I've created for Israel Portnoy, am I able to use one of his YouTube thumbnails as the artist photo in the infobox or is it not free to use? I submitted it initially but then was worried that I shouldn't have so I removed it. --שי - LionFireKing404 15:32, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
