Discretionary sanctions notification

[edit]

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in articles about living or recently deceased people, and edits relating to the subject (living or recently deceased) of such biographical articles. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of serial rapists, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Shank. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 06:05, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

July 2022

[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Adakiko. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, List of serial rapists, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Adakiko (talk) 04:02, 27 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please use edit summaries?

[edit]

If you add or remove a name on LoSR, please mention their name?

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

You can use the edit summary field to explain your reasoning for an edit, or provide a description of what the edit changes. Summaries save time for other editors and reduce the chances your edit will be misunderstood. For some edits a summary may be quite brief.

Please provide an edit summary for every edit you make. With a Wikipedia account you can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → Tick Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. Thanks! Adakiko (talk) 23:45, 29 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

To answer your question on my talk page—and you can reply here; I'll see—the gender sanctions cover all of human sexuality, thus including List of serial rapists. I'm not sure why the exact wording, which comes from a case titled Gender and sexuality, doesn't include the word "sexuality", and had actually noticed that when I left this notice, and already reached out to a few arbitrators for clarification on that. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 07:49, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Again, you can just reply here. I'm not saying you infringed anything. Rape is part of the topic of gender and sexuality. You are editing about rape, so I am notifying you of the discretionary sanctions in place in that topic area. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 07:56, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can you revert this for me please? https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_youngest_killers&type=revision&diff=1105819626&oldid=1105805957 2601:206:301:4A90:3EF:572F:A7B0:1619 (talk) 18:36, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This IP is a sock of prolific sockmaster Cadeken. See WP:Sockpuppet investigations/Cadeken/Archive, who has created dozens of accounts and used even more IPs. The editing pattern is identical. IPs in southern California always pop up when a registered sock is blocked. The IPs seek meatpuppets with this message to evade a block or policies, a gross violation of policies. I suggest ignoring this IP unless you want to open a can of worms. Sundayclose (talk) 18:55, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Hugh Fraser Actor.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Hugh Fraser Actor.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 15:12, 2 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Central Park jogger case

[edit]

Hi @ContributingHelperOnTheSide, I am @Archer1234. I wanted to let you know that I reverted your recent edit to Central Park jogger case. Editors should not add unsourced claims to an article. Adding a {{citation needed}} tag to newly introduced claims does not absolve the editor from responsibility to cite source(s) (i.e., it is not a loophole for adding unsourced claims). {{Citation needed}} is for claims pre-existing in the article that do not merit immediate removal. If you have any questions about this, reply to this message. Thanks. — Archer1234 (talk) 23:01, 8 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm ScottishFinnishRadish. I noticed that you made an edit concerning content related to a living (or recently deceased) person on List of serial rapists, but you didn't support your changes with a citation to a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now. Wikipedia has a very strict policy concerning how we write about living people, so please help us keep such articles accurate and clear. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you! ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 22:44, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

April 2023

[edit]

Information icon Please do not add or change content, as you did at And Then There Were None, without citing a reliable source. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Please see the comment in the #Central Park jogger case section above. Adding a Citation Needed tag does not absolve you from the requirement to provide sources when you add new material. MichaelMaggs (talk) 21:00, 12 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Film plots

[edit]

Thank you for adding a plot to Nine Guests for a Crime, however as per WP:FILMPLOT, plot summaries should be between 400 and 700 words, whereas your plot was 1258 words. I have, therefore tagged the plot as being too long, and would like to give you the chance to reduce it to under 700 words. Thanks - Arjayay (talk) 17:26, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I can't say when, but I can reduce the word count. ContributingHelperOnTheSide (talk) 19:40, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please make sure the content is supported by the sources

[edit]

Hi!

I know that there were good intentions behind this edit. Unfortunately, the edit did not take into account what the source said. The text in Wikipedia articles needs to be supported by the sources.

The source states: "Stuart Tay was a 17-year-old Chinese-American honor student[...]" and so the text needs to say "Chinese American" there. By "Chinese American" it means Tay was of Chinese ancestry, and not that his family originated from the People's Republic of China. Indeed, his family came from Singapore, and so he was also "Singaporean American" at the same time. To describe him as Singaporean American, cite a source which explicitly states his family came from Singapore. WhisperToMe (talk) 19:20, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted categories

[edit]

The category was deleted through a standard WP:CFD discussion, not arbitrarily emptied out of process, so tracking "which users or bots were responsible for removing the category name from every article" would be a waste of your time because nobody acted improperly at all and nothing you do or say will get anybody punished.

Regardless, if you want to at least find out what was in the category, you would have to get an old "dump" (copy) of the database as it existed on a date before the category was deleted, and scan for the contents of that category. There is a way to do that, but I haven't had to do it in so long that I don't remember where it is — so your best bet would be to ask at WP:VPT for more information about where to post a request of that nature. But again, nobody's going to get punished for "removing" the category from articles given that it was deleted through the proper channels, so if that's your goal then don't waste your time.
