Certainly. If any of the information comes from books, newspapers, and magazines instead of from local knowledge, you could put that in as a source. For example, if there are any newspaper articles in the local paper that discuss the economy, you could use it as a source to improve that section. If the temples have been discussed in any scholarly works, that would be a source for that section. Right now there is no way to verify what is in the village other than going there ourselves and taking a look. --Diannaa ^(Talk) 17:13, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Toronto election template

Hello. I notice that you've speedy deleted one of my templates for the 1980 Toronto election. You've also returned the basic information to the Ron Kanter page (which I appreciate), but I can't help but think I should explain my logic in having created in the first place.

There are several templates of this sort on Wikipedia, and they're often posted on multiple pages. (This particular template could be posted on the pages for Ron Kanter, Ying Hope, and the 1980 Toronto election; in fact, it was posted on the last of these pages until someone removed it not long ago). Storing this information in template form makes it easier to make changes, when and as necessary. It also takes up less space. Until now, no-one has objected to the existence of this information in template form.

I can't help but think the original speedy delete was the result of a misunderstanding; I certainly don't regard the existence of the template as controversial. Would you be willing to restore the template? CJCurrie (talk) 04:47, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

That explains why the version you restored wasn't quite the same as the version I was working on then. Start paying attention in English class. ;) You might want to have a look at Wikipedia:Basic copyediting. That should have some good tips. Read it thoroughly, and if there are any linked pages that are associated with copy editing, read them, too. You may also want to read this page and the pages it links to. If you're in school, ask your English teacher to give you a couple extra lessons about proper grammar before or after school. Also remember to read the links about copy editing. Hi, Wayne. thank you for noticing how many articles I have worked on in the drive so far. One of the things I like to do during the drives is copy edit a lot of short articles as that helps keep the totals going down. I am also working on Clint Eastwood, which is, I think, the largest article I have ever worked on. It has been nominated for GA but there is no way it will pass in its present state, and it might not pass when I am finished. We shall see. With a huge article of this size, I usually only do one or two sections per day, as otherwise I start to get bored and don't do as good of a job. But it is surely possible to do a good job of copy editing an article of any size. I started when I opened my Wikipedia account in October 2009; I chose to copy edit as it seemed a task I could help with that did not require a lot of knowledge of wiki mark-up, which I did not have at all when I started. I always had high marks in English in school and I read a lot, particularly non-fiction. I do not have any formal training for editing; I have been figuring it out as I go along. I started with small low-profile articles from the backlog and would usually check first in the edit history and on the talk page to make sure I wasn't wading in to a contentious article. Eventually I started doing larger and more important articles like Battle of Kursk, Korean War, Rajput, and Indiana class battleship. Some contentious ones I have worked on include biographies like Adi Da, Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto, and Mayawati. The GA reveiwers have arrived at the article now and they tell the author it is too long; there is a massive trimming going on right now. According to Wikipedia, that is disruptive.

I have looked at major earthquake and major tragedies. Most have a reaction section and a debate. Why allow so many repeated debates when we know the question will pop up every few weeks?

To encourage debates so often is disruptive. I am revolutionary in foreseeing that these debates happen time and time again.

By getting some discussion, we can help WP in the near future. We don't have to apply it to the Tucson tragedy. It is worthwhile to discuss if we should have reactions sections. If we do, it is helpful if we have an idea on who to include. Just who I want? Maybe what reliable sources are reporting? Or if Brad Pitt comments, include him??? What I know is that many Hugglers have decided to try Huggle2 and have remained using it. It was founded in late 2010. Plus in the revert summary on HG2, it also has a reason such as unexplained removal of content and others. WAYNESLAM 22:58, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Edit war. I caught this article patrolling recent changes. I agree with anons contributing since one fix a mistake I made last summer. But isn't it wierd that any god knows who can come in and dictate content? An anon persistantly making changes without consensus shouldn't be able to prevail. It just doesn't make sense. As soon as the other editor starts using edit summaries and quoting sources, it is no longer unexplained removal of content that can be reversed at will. Thanks for the reply. I didn't intend to have a discussion here, I would have preferred my page where your template is but here is fine too. It's a good thing I didn't use rollback even though this (these) IP is a vandal - see one and two , different IPs same person. I think it's outrageous that you threaten to block me for standing up to this guy. Even if this wasn't a vandal IP, anyone who has ever gone near a newspaper knows that North Korea is a communist country and this IP is a fringe of the fringe. This isn't about North Korea or if someone wants to put his girlfriend's crotch on the Vulva article. I sometimes see vandal IPs notified that all their edits are automatically reversed vandalism or not. Also how can you possibly assume good-faith with this IP? Another concern is if anons find out that all they have to do is put their POV twice and then the community is forced to let it stay or go through procedures to remove. I know what I erased, but I consider that the inclusion of a team into a professional league is not a major event in a decade, dozens of teams were born, sometimes more important and/or more wealthy than the texans (ie Juventus F.C.). Thats why I erased it. I think that winning 3 championships in an important league like NFL is worth mentioning. Even if many other teams, again more important and/or more wealthy (ie barcelona fc, or the spurs or the lakers) achieved something similar, I didnt erase the patriots record even when I was tempted on doing so. This is an article I tagged myself a week or two ago. You have done a great job and it is a big improvement. I have done another round of edits. You can see for yourself what I did; here are a few suggestions.

• The location of the monastery should appear in the opening sentence of the lead.
• Links needed improving. I took out some red links of people who are unlikely to ever have articles, and added some links to interesting related articles.
• Section headers should be lower case.
• Items in a bulleted list do not have punctuation at the end if sentence fragments are used.
• Some of the grammar still needed work. Often we see "had been" when they should have used "was". Some sentences were flipped around for added clarity. Example: "Typical for the neo-byzantine style, the gold mosaic paintings were created by Danish artist, Aage Exner" implies that it is typical of all neo-byzantine mosaics to have been created by the Danish artist. This way is clearer: "The gold mosaic paintings were created by Danish artist Aage Exner in a typical neo-Byzantine style."
• The words "the old church" were in blod everywhere; I removed the bold.

Commas after year

Hi

AS this seems to be a recurring thing, can you point me to the MoS that states there should be a comma after the year.

ie "In 2011, the" rather than "In 2011 the"

I was having a debate about this with another editor User_talk:Chaosdruid#Year_and_comma and even after searching through the archives we couldn't find any advice for MoS entries that were a little ambiguous. It looks like when I was "correcting" sentences with "On July 4, 2010 there was a firework display" to "On July 4, 2010, there was a firework display" I was wrong as the MoS seems to imply there should not be a comma "Month before day: February 14 and February 14, 1990 (comma required)." although once we examined it I realised it is just referring to the one used after 14 lol.

Thanks again for the italicising though - I went off to try and find out which of his works were short stories and which were novels and got distracted then totally forgot about it much to my embarrasment!

Wait a minute. If the sentence says: "In 2005 there was a display...", there should not be a comma. However, if the sentence says: "On January 17, 2011, there was a display...", then there should be a comma. I hate commas. Sorry but it looks like a reliable source to me. They have been publishing since 1918. I checked the reliable sources notice board and found no indication that this is not a reliable source.

• http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/health-ministry-warns-of-shortage-of-doctors-nurses-1.300230 does not contain the word Palestinians but gives facts and figures about the state of health care in Israel (number of doctors and nurses per capita and a potential shortage of health care services)

I will not have time to do this until after the copy edit drive. In the meantime here are suggestions for things you can do yourself: work on revising the lead section as the present lead does not adequately summarise the contents of the article per WP:Lead. Also there are some obvious things you can do with section headers that do not presently comply with the manual of style. The article relies too heavily on quotations; please consider removing some.

Hi fellow editor, I was wondering whether you could help. I stupidly got myself blocked WP:3RR, when I saw red at accusation of being anti-Hindu. See the discussion here. I am really concerned that there is an element of WP:GAME here where another editor is misusing warning templates an in here, here and here, where he has simply copied my warnings and added them on my talk page. He has also done this previously here, which another editor had put here. Look at the number of warnings he has recieved from me and other editors here. You have let a content dispute spill over into a personal dispute, because the other user made you angry. Winston786 has only been editing for a few weeks, so he might not know where to get his warning templates or how to construct an appropriate message when he is unhappy about your actions. Attempting to communicate with others via edit summaries rather than discussing things on the talk page inevitably leads to edit wars! There is no rush; if unsuitable content stays in the article for a few days, nothing bad will happen. The encyclopedia will continue to improve. As a more senior editor you need to set a better example. This Winston786 has only been with us since January 2. U2 3D copyedit

A few months ago your did a copyedit for U2 3D after it failed its first FAC. I thought you did a really great job and a couple other editors agreed. Recently, I nominated the article for its second FAC, but one editor is claiming that the "prose are stiff and repetitive" and "there is a long way to go yet". I stated how a copyedit was done a few months back and no major edits have taken place since, but the editor says it still needs lots of work. I'd appreciate it if you could take a look at the article and/or comment on the FAC page. This editor is making it seem like the prose needs tons of work, but I disagree as I've gone through it many times, as did you a while ago.

Note: The FAC was started a month ago but after other editors stuck out their comments (after issues were resolved), one editor decided to start the FAC over from scratch, which explains why there isn't much listed there. I did discuss the copyedit before it was all removed and editors said it was done well and an improvement from the article before its first FAC. –Dream out loud (talk) 21:53, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

PAGCOR Tower

Another user Mervynbunique seems to be against deleting Pagcor Tower, however he does not have any valid reason for it other than saying "looks stupid.. is hard to read. we dont need it here, you can put it into the talk page". That user also seems to have a record of doing disruptive edits, and he seems to be doing it as well to the Pagcor Tower Article. Croatian War of Independence

Hi! I would like to ask you for help regarding copyediting of Croatian War of Independence. The article is currently listed as an A-class candidate article with the Military history project. Nearly all of the review concerns are addressed by now, but a reviewer pointed out that there is a bit of work required in terms of prose before it could be passed. A WP:GOCE copyedit was performed on this article while it was a GA candidate, but some material was altered or added in the meantime.

Hello! Do you think that you could give me some advice? I was considering going for another RfA in a few weeks, which would be my third, with my latest RfA being in August. Here are some things to work on. These are things brought up about other candidates recently (some of them in my own RFA in October0.

• Your percentage of automated edits is high, at 64% http://toolserver.org/~soxred93/autoedits/index.php?user=Slon02&lang=en&wiki=wikipedia&begin=&end=
• Your top edited articles do not show a great commitment to developing any one article. Some users look for that.
• People still want to see content contributions from the admin candidates, including work on GAs and FAs, although that is not what admins actually do.
• You need to have a firm idea what tasks you propose to tackle and if they are in areas where there are backlogs of work to be done, all the better. There are large backlogs at image deletion and copyright work.
• You need to demonstrate good people skills; some of the questions will be not attempts to get information from you but attempts to get you riled to see how you react. I will add more ideas later if I think of anything else. --Diannaa ^(Talk) 05:16, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

The original source seems to have been called into question, despite the permission tags that it bore at the time. You will need to find out from the German Wikipedia what the status is, or wait for their discussion to conclude. Genealogy and genetics can be sometimes not only contentious but very complex. Even in the case of Adolf Hitler there are claims he had African Berber DNA. The representation of Hermes, the Greek god, with afro-looking hair is taken as evidence in some circles that the ancient Greeks were of mixed heritage. All this is well and good but we cannot go by speculation alone. In an encyclopedia exceptional claims, as also you mentioned, have to be supported by scholarly research which in this case was clearly not so. Steve Howey

Hi. I am quite new at copy editing and I have general question on tags. E.g. I was looking at the backlog and came across Steve Howey (actor). It was tagged in March 2010 and after that it was changed and improved by many editors. Is the tag is still needed or it is there because no one dared to remove it? It looks much better than a lot of not tagged pages. Can you comment a bit on removing tags? Another question: can anyone add a copy edit page to a page or there is a policy for that? We don't have any official taggers and de-taggers. Anyone can add and remove maintenance tags as required. Please do not remove the tags unless the work has actually been completed; thats the only "rule". The Steve Howey page still needs some minor punctuation fixes and then the tag can be removed. Newsletter time

It's time to develop the final newsletter for the Guild's January Backlog elimination drive, but instead of developing it in my subpage, I'm thinking we should create a Guild page dedicated to the development of our newsletters. We could create Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Newsletters and add links to all of our newsletters. We could put the newsletters themselves into subpages, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Newsletters/December 2010, or something along those lines. April to delete

Hi - ah well another one over !

I had lots of things to do in the first half of the month and I was going to get involved later but my PC started to go wrong just ater I did an AWB run on the India projects articles as a test for them (on the 13th November lol) and then failed totally at the end of the week. I was ok during lunch breaks at work but then we closed the factory for two weeks and I lost access. I did try but was having to use my "smart" phone which kept messing up pages and was not displaying properly. I even had to ask someone to fix a page when it decided to delete half of it when I edited a sentence. Apparently the memory and Java were having issues causing it to truncate after 1.5MB of page - that sounds big but it isn't. Anything with less than 2,000 words was ok but bigger pages were at risk of corruption.

At least this time I might get the biggest article one. The thing that scares me is the Indian articles. I am scared to put the copyedit needed tags on to them as there are so many, I believe last time I looked there were 80,000 Indian articles, at tleast ones that are tagged.

They take so long to edit, one I added over a hundred "the"s and about forty "a"s to. I should get up the courage to tag them for copy-edit but I know that realistically, it will be us that ends up doing them a year or so from now...

Anyway I had better get my socks on and get AWB fired up for a run on the Robotics project stuff - no rest for the wicked and I am sure you have plenty to to do with the newsletter etc. :¬)

Yes, India is a very scary problem. The Hindi wiki only has 50,000 articles; they would rather post in English; perhaps they are being instructed to do so in school as a way to hone their language skills. Someday every single village and temple in the country will have an article, and then we can copy-edit them all, and then we will be done. And then we can do the same for Pakistan! Fuzzy math?

Hey Diannaa, I checked through all the roll-over totals and your math looks good. I also checked over the leader boards and they all look fine except for the massive Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya article that Chaosdruid copy edited. Before the user added the GOCE-in-use tag, the article had 30,966 words. There was also a bullet-point list that added 1715 words for a total of 32,681 – not 32,711 as was written. The difference is not huge, but I'm wondering how 32,711 was calculated. There is another numbered list of items within the article totaling 153 words, but adding this still doesn't make 32,711. Most people plug an article with a lot of lists into a word processing programme to do the word count and there may be slight variations in how different programmes do the calculation. Rogue IP Edit War

I am investigating right now. It looks like the content is a copyright violation. If an editor removes sourced content and replaces it with their own opinion or unsourced ramblings, that is indeed vandalism. People who repeatedly insert copyright material also need to be warned and reported for vandalism. What you need to do is put escalating warning templates (level 1, 2, 3, 4) on their talk page, and if they continue to vandalise after four warnings (you can get the appropriate warning templates from Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace), please report them to WP:AIV. I will help if I am not sleeping, but since we live on opposite sides of the planet, I will not always be available when you need help. Removing vandalism is an exception to the 3RR rule. Copyright text can readily be spotted; a large block of unformatted text, usually more professionally worded than you might expect, is dropped into the article. You can copy a sentence into the Google search engine and locate the source of the text. Watch out for WP:mirror sites that are copies of Wikipedia. Have a look at this Google search: [4] Sikhwiki.org is a wikipedia mirror; the place the IP copied the text from is up.co.in. --Diannaa ^(Talk) 15:35, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for the barnstar, Diannaa! Now, I hope I don't sound ungrateful, but I'm mostly asking this so that I better understand how this works: One of the rules for barnstar awarding is that anyone who copyedits an article of 10,000 or more words gets a special award for doing that. I copyedited an article of just over 10,000 words, but it was solely for typo-correction - the copyediting tag at the top still qualified. GOCE January Backlog elimination drive conclusion

Guild of Copy Editors January 2011 Backlog elimination drive Greetings from the January 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We have reached the end of the month and the end of another successful drive; thanks to all who participated. Statistics 54 people signed up for the year's first Backlog elimination drive. Of these, 40 participated. One of our goals was to reduce the size of the backlog by at least 10%. We managed to reduce the backlog by 633 articles, or about 12%. Another goal was to eliminate as many 2009 months as possible from the queue. We eliminated January, February, March, and April—4 out of 12 months is not bad! In addition, we eliminated 37% of all remaining 2009 articles from the queue. Chaosdruid copy edited Kutch Gurjar Kashtriya for 32,711 words, which is the largest single article completed in one of our drives so far. This article counts as six 5000-K articles, and Chaosdruid wins the "most 5000-K articles" leaderboard category. Way to go! A complete list of individual results is here. The band does not meet the notability guidelines. People, bands, and other organisations need to have write-ups in reliable third-party sources such as magazines or newspapers in order to be considered notable enough for a Wikipedia article. Just to make my case clear, I have added all the verified and standard sources when asked by other long established users, and I can explain all the edits I made. Administrator Titoxd removed the AIV report with the remark "not done; take this to AN/I, RFC, or somewhere else, since it's not blatant vandalism/spam". The diffs I have checked so far show that Sikh History is adding content and providing sources and Winston 786 is adding content and not providing sources. Sikh History, please do not accuse people of gaming the system or of having a lack of competence. That type of post inflames the situation and makes thing worse. Winston 786, it is quite normal for people to watch-list articles and check their list several times a day. I do this myself on problematic articles; I have 170 pages on my watch list. If Sikh History has watch-listed some of the articles that you are editing, this may give the appearance that he is following you around; however he is actually following the development of the articles and not you in particular. --Diannaa ^(Talk) 15:25, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia is past the point where we can add material, especially to biographies, without quoting reliable sources. Things have gotten stricter about that even since I started editing a year and a half ago. WP:BURDEN says if you wish to add material you have to provide a source. I think that is a good example of the problem. Their are relaible sources there from books, magazine article and from English newspapers like the Guardian, but he either does not understand them or does not understand what WP:Consensus is. here is another example, where he seems to object to Hindu women being captured by Muslims, when clearly the reference states "When Hindus crack this joke, they are oblivious to the fact that had the Sikhs not intervened, their womenfolk would have been dishonoured and taken into exile....". Yes, I have seen that before. What happens is we continue as we are doing and if he adds any material that violates BLP policy, we remove it. We keep doing that for as long as it takes. He can do no damage presently as the article is locked; when the protection expires it can be re-applied. Some of his stuff is bordering on trolling, as he persists in not getting the point. That's another way it could go: he violates enough rules that he gets blocked indefinitely. Thank you for spending so much time on this matter. Yes I find it very useful. Because you're in constant real-time contact with other Wikipedians (also, admins have their own private channel, but to whoever else is reading this don't worry, there's no shady cabal-like business dealings going on in there, it's actually quite boring usually ;) ) I'm usually active in the #wikipedia-en-help channel, where I'm always helping out newbies. There's also an anti-vandalism channel that monitors the recent changes feed and continually outputs any edits that are flagged by the system as being possible vandalism. I have my client set so that it notifies me anytime my name or any other certain keyword pops up in the feed.. it functions like an automatic notification watchlist, which can be very useful, especialyl if someone is in the process of vandalising your userpage. There's also usually really lively chat in #wikipedia-en, which can be entertaining to watch on some friday and saturday nights as drunken Wikipediots argue with each other ;P. Also the Office hours chats are a great way to get to know some of the suits at the foundation. Anyways, it's not everyone's cup-o-tea, I guess it depends if you're social butterfly and like chatting much :) -- œ^™ 06:56, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

I do have a question. In the section entitled "Volunteer companies organized from state militia", There is a [citation needed] tag after the comment, "Several other well-documented companies are likely have been organized in this manner, such as the Jackson Guards from Jackson County, and the Phillips County Guards of Phillips County, but so far contemporary records linking them to the militia have not been found." I am unsure how to resolved this tag, since the comment is about the fact that no records have been found. I added this comment after a couple of people sent me lists of Volunteer Companies from Arkansas and asked why they weren't all included in the article. How to you document the lack of a reference, or is there a better way to make the point? I really appreciate your insight. I may eventually nominate this article for GA. If there is no mention of the lack of sources in the sources, you may have to take it out as it looks like OR or speculation :). Here are some suggestions for further development of the article:

• you could consolidate the references that are used multiple times. Have a look at my favourite article, Indiana class battleship . Note the Footnotes, Citations, Bibliography set-up
• if you put all the citations in cite templates they will all be formatted correctly and in the same manner

Oh! This type of thing also happens when multiple IPs are vandalising the same article. Clue-bot or an unaware Huggler will not notice the hidden vandalism. Another trick they are pulling lately is 3 edits: bad, bad, good; if you are not alert you will not see the first baddie, and it appears that they are reverting a vandalistic edit. The Error of Bias

You cited me for vandalism because of my apparently "biased edits". Yet by calling my edits biased, isn't that biased in itself? I think you need to review your policy before accusing others of vandalism. To know the true reality of yourself, you must be aware not only of your conscious thoughts, but also of your unconscious prejudices, bias and habits. Nice job, kiddo ;) N419BH said something about the width of my page on a netbook; may have been an IE-issue. IE's rendering is intentionally problematic. They *want* people catering to their way of doing things.

The Personas for Firefox are a gimmick; I, of course, picked the Wiki-one. It's true values are it's proper rendering, the endless available add-ons, and it is the default browser for most serious internet professionals. Safari and Chrome are pretty good, too, and Opera's no slouch. Chrome's rel strength is it's javascript engine, which is very fast. Every have a browser tab lock-up and have to restart the browser? Your edits are great and add a lot of clarity; that is our main goal. Good job. I found a few more places to streamline the language and use fewer words; plus, there were a couple spots where I added words for clarity.

The section A Wrinkle in Time got a major overhaul as far as the order of the sentences, and I had to split a cite to do it. The reason I did this was to get the events to flow in chronological order.

Punctuation fixes, mostly missing commas. Example: "When You Reach Me follows sixth grade protagonist Miranda" becomes "When You Reach Me follows a sixth-grade protagonist, Miranda." "Sixth-grade" needs a hyphen because it is being used as an adjective.

Things were changed and omitted in the Plot section to try to add clarity. For example, we don't need to know that the notes arrived before Sal was hit; adding that bit just confuses things.

I almost always remove the words "also" and "however". Some articles have the word "also" in almost every sentence. The word "however" should be reserved for when something unexpected happens.

Sal is a boy.

Over-linking was reduced. Link once in the lead, and once in the body of the article. Look for the first occurence as the one to be linked.

BLT

Hey. Just a courtesy note for the future, it's not recommended to move an article when it's in the middle of a GA review. Now that BLT (sandwich) was moved to BLT, the bot wasn't recognizing that review that was on the talk page and it got messed up. I went and fixed it, but just remember that if here's a GA subpage on the talk page, then that needs to be moved as well if that needs to be done. Q for you

Hi Dianna, I've been reading thru your copy edits to chess article, learning a lot from them. (For example, I see you really deep-six the word "also" a lot. At first this bugged me; now I see that mostly that word is an unnecessary filler. Breaking bad habits is hard but healthy. Reading your ce's helps me learn. I'm fascinated by how slight alterations either aid or can inflict harm on intended meaning, etc.)

My Q for you: Do you have suggestion for me how to efficiently proceed? (E.g. is there any book or course or website you might specially recommend to speed my learning, make it more efficient, etc.?) Thx!

We have lately been developing some resources such as a Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/How to/Step by step guide which you can use to work your way through an article. There are other tips at Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/How to that have been sorted by complexity. We have just started offering a mentorship program, where one of the Guild coordinators would work with you for a while and help you improve your skills.
