There are thousands of rowing events around the world, and thousands of rowing pages on Wikipedia, but that is no reason to include links on the HRR page. Clarification on Photo Addition Reverted on Biju Patnaik International Airport

Hope you are doing well.

I had added the photo on the right-hand side to Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. I had shot this on 26th January 2017 around 10:30 am in the morning while I was flying to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata, West Bengal, India by an IndiGo domestic flight. But you reverted it citing "unsourced". I would love to know the reason if you can elaborate.

I was cleaning up French language comments (in an English language Wiki) placed in the middle of the sentences of another person's comment. These comments were placed without indicating that these were not from the original poster. These comments were not signed. These comment merely indicated whether the commenter agreed or not on the first posters arguments, without giving any reason why or why not. I removed these because it was more representing spam than actual contribution.

I hadn't realised that the text in question had been added (nearly 9 years ago) by someone other than the original author of that message and was thus a violation of WP:TPO. Dear David, I am discouraged. I worked so hard totally re-writing an article Lorenzo de Zavala only to find it immediately stolen HERE, copied verbatim including citations and pictures. http://medlibrary.org/medwiki/ is one of many mirrors and forks of Wikipedia. The terms under which you released every contribution you have made to Wikipedia are shown in the statement under the edit window for every edit, namely: "By saving changes, you agree to the Terms of Use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the CC BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL. You agree that a hyperlink or URL is sufficient attribution under the Creative Commons license." Unlike some mirrors and forks, that site does provide the url of the relevant Wikipedia page as attribution. March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

New articles NOINDEXED so Google won't index them

Yes, a new article is NOINDEXed until it has been patrolled by a user with the "new page patrol" user right. This is a system which was introduced last Autumn. They claim that it was intended to have been that way for years, but that there had been a bug in the software. There is a 4 month backlog in the WP:NPP process, but apparently there is a time-out, which they said originally was 90 days but now is stated to be 30 days, at which point the NOINDEXing is removed if it hasn't already been patrolled. If your recently-created articles are on Google quickly, it might be that new page patrollers are patrolling your pages promptly. --David Biddulph (talk) 20:32, 8 March 2017 (UTC)

I've tweaked the ref punctuation. I think there are scripts & gadgets that might do that sort of thing, but nothing that I use. The only extent to which I've simplified the task is to enable the WikiEd editor (under "Editing" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets). --David Biddulph (talk) 06:04, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

Punctuation

Any commas I add are to improve the readability/flow of a sentence. They help to keep ideas separate, as well as provide "breathers", when appropriate.

Slavs

Rightly or wrongly, you have twice used the rollback facility where such action was undue[1], [2]. This does not help the project (since this feature is only supposed to be used in cases where it requirement is obvious or if reverting banned users, etc). The second example involved a multitude of edits from the other editor and here if it were felt that this editor made some incorrect changes, then these should have been edited manually. By blanking every contribution it would appear that every copy-edit and clean up is also annulled and as such, the editor in question cannot do right no matter what he does. As I could not see the reason for your revert, I restored the last good faith version. If you believe it is wrong, you are welcome to revert as I have no strong opinion on the topic but I would appreciate a content-based summary. --OJ (talk) 23:53, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

I am well aware of this though I stress that he had not been banned during the time in question and his edits were unequivocally good faith. I have no issue with the reverting itself but the method that was used which is reserved for special cases outside of this example. I gave you some links on your user talk page. You may also find it useful to read WP:Best practices for editors with close associations. Hello David. Congratulations and thankyou - we believe that your decision to get rid of any UK Daily Mail articles is great. I feel - unlike the 2 other editors on the latest contributions to the "talk" page - that this page is very well researched, giving due weight to all of the significant Luptons throughout the centuries. Many editors have added to it over the years since it was established by the grandson of Lady Bullock, nee Barbara Lupton (d. 1974) i.e. Fivebills. The Leeds "Leodis" refs are clearly valid and well researched as are those from The UK Telegraph which have clearly spoken to members of the Lupton family themselves. The 2 editors in question on the "Talk" page appear to believe that the UK Daily Telegraph articles and all of the other citations have no "genealogical evidence" (??) - particularly in the case of the Telegraph. They do not respect any of the mayor UK newspapers stories at all. Any changes to this page would not be beneficial. We would appreciate your input as a valued editor. Tagging of Uzma Begum

I recently removed a speedy delete tag that you had placed on Uzma Begum. I do not think that Uzma Begum fits any of the speedy deletion criteria  because "sultana of Multan" is a claim of significance. The history is kept, to preserve the attribution of the contributions to the articles.

Hi David--thank you for your response to my comments on the Teahouse forum yesterday. I should have been more careful with my phrasing of the issue that I posted about, and my apologies if I have offended you or your fellow editors, who do very good work for this site! I have vested a lot of faith in Wikipedia over the years--it is the primary place I go to for information before I delve deeper into any topic. It was the source I used to find information about the organization being discussed, in fact, before I started to learn more about it. All I know is that when I searched for International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI) the other day, nothing came up! I was dismayed because it has been my intention to fix this page up so that it accurately reflects the accomplishments of the organization. For some time, it has been sparse. This is not to promote a cause, ultimately, but to communicate verifiable information that has now been altered or the page reverted back to an earlier state because some of the info is incorrect.

The last time I checked there was an extensive amount of information on the page that now appears to be gone. I was informed by a contributor IFIstaff that an editor named Huon had deleted a large amount of verifiable content rather than flagging the specific information or language in question and sent transcripts of this discussion. While this conversation shows neither party at its best, the larger issue that verifiable content was removed from Wikipedia at the discretion of an editor who refused to allow the user in question power to edit after the username was changed (as requested) and assurance was given that any language misconstrued would be removed (as requested) was troubling. I am not going to level any charges at Huon, I just think Wikipedia is an important source of free information and I don't want anyone to feel like they can't contribute content that is true and verifiable. Obviously users should be checked when this is not the case, but no editor should assume that content is untrue without doing the research.

In addition, the edits I made to the page were in fact changed/reversed (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_International_Federation_of_Interior_Architects/Designers) and information on the page is now incorrect. IFI has not been a member of the International Design Alliance for some time now (no one is a member since the Alliance broke up). I don't know if you can check this, but none of the sub-pages that I edited appear at all-- IFI World Interiors Day (IFI WID) and IFI World Interiors for the Next Generation (IFI WING). The former is a public and globally recognized day of celebration for the interior architecture/design community and was established by IFI; the latter is a global awards competition, the last iteration being in 2013--why have these been removed from the IFI Wikipedia page?

I fully appreciate the NPOV and the information you supplied about Wikipedia and its editors. I am guilty of not doing my research before I made some of those accusations.

Apologies for taking up too much of your time already. Disagreements fleshed out online like this are unusual for me and I would not like them to become commonplace. As I said before, it was not my intention to offend and I'm not pursuing charges against this editor now that the page is restored.

Google Chrome version history

Hi. Regarding you saying "you removed not only the description but the reference for each release", I checked some example refs before removing them, they list only "Security Fixes and Rewards". New articles are NOINDEXed until they have been patrolled through the new page patrol process. There is currently a queue of over 13 thousand articles awaiting patrol, with a backlog of about 8 months. If, however, it hasn't been patrolled in 90 days the NOINDEX attribute will be removed, and Google can then index the page. As for your second question, about a photo, I see that you another editor made a first attempt, then a further editor has tidied it up to comply with the WP:Manual of Style. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:53, 11 November 2017 (UTC)

Random punctuation

On my, according to some, here, random punctuation in my article edits:

collapsed incoherent drivel from editor who can't write in English

There has been a general decline, particularly in American culture, since, shortly after the advent of the Internet (that word, by the way, is ALWAYS capitalized), and particularly, the 'World-Wide Web', in what used to be considered, 'good' English grammar. But a trend towards degeneration has been firmly set in place - mainly due to ignorance of the rules of the language, and, sheer laziness of attitude and that, mainly in punctuation, spelling, syntax, grammar, etc. This, I well remember, was predicted early on by veteran computer users, and, in particular, those who were writers. This trend, of course, is due to the influx and influence of the general populace, which, seemingly all at once, introduced a 'lowest-common-denominator' policy on textual communication, by people who, typically, were not at all familiar with keyboards, namely typewriters, as used in textual communication of any kind. This has affect the comprehension and interpretation of said communications, to such a degree, that, more than 80% of all Internet-originated, textual communications sent by, even close family members, are misunderstood by the receiver, and another 80%, of any given message's content, is not correctly interpreted.

Punctuation, is the 'flavor' of a statement, or clause, as it relates to the previous, and the following statement or clause. As the eye perceives any good artwork, you are being guided - sensibly, and rationally through it, by way of proper punctuation. See how easy, and conversational that was to read? Now, try this:

"There has been a general decline particularly in america since shortly after the advent of the internet which by the way is always capitalized and particularly the world wide web in what used to be considered good english grammar a trend towards degeneration has been firmly set in place mainly due to ignorance of the rules of the english language mainly in punctuation spelling syntax grammar and etc." No, I wouldn't want to have to read it again, either.

There is, also, probably something else to consider. That is, your personal familiarity or unfamiliarity, with the language and how you learned to speak it, and, how you read it. If you're under about the age of 30, then you, and those before you, are speaking it differently. Your 'discontinued use' of - what used to be required adeptness in - the intricacies of English grammar, doesn't make my memory, and my retention of it, wrong. Good writing should resemble, even mimic, oral conversation. Punctuation gives a string of ideas, or a clause - or a string, or a progression of clauses - clarity, and sensibility. See that? If you didn't quite catch it, read it again.

According to Strunk and White, a certain amount of 'literary freedom', is granted to the writer, who may wish to use it as a literary 'device', or, in such a way as to emphasize something, which, may not present itself, readily, to the reader. Punctuation should present, properly, the idea proposed, in a way that fits, and suits, the desired, chosen way of expression of the writer. The way it is written and punctuated, depends on the content, dialect, phraseology (British, or American) emphasis of content or idea, and, even local colloquialism.

DO NOT criticize, or otherwise reprimand me, for my application of something, that is going to assist you, in the understanding, and readability, of each idea, as it occurs, and is presented, in a way that, in the end, makes your reading experience, one, of better, overall comprehension. Now, read that rather lengthy sentence again - this time, with no punctuation. Have fun. DO NOT try to minimalize my level of continued, and, continuing education, unless, you are quite well-prepared to assert comparisons. If, at this point, you didn't quite catch what I just said, read it again. If all else fails - I'll do the writing; you, do the reading.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

Weird Editing Quirk

The edit which provoked my warning was this one, in which only part of the section which you added was sourced. You had been warned on numerous previous occasions for adding unsourced material (including material similar to this edit), so you ought to have been more careful and ensured that everything you added was sourced. Editing the Geography section of Mendoza, Texas

Hello David... I saw your reasoning behind why I was given a warning that I was going to be blocked from editing without further warning the next time I added unsourced content to Wikipedia, as I did at Mendoza, Texas. I understand that I was given several warnings about adding unsourced content to Wikipedia, and I know that I shouldn't, but sometimes my mind just plays tricks on me. If you are wondering where I received the distances from, I received them from [3], to where you can just type in the name of a city and the distance from that city to the community will be shown. If this is not a good source, then please let me know. If I convert them, I don't know if I will be blocked for not sourcing that material. Also, with the most recent warning you gave me, I disagree with WP:USCITIES saying that you should remove the coordinates from the Geography section if they are also located in the infobox. Why is because it is shown on many articles of incorporated cities and towns in the United States. Take the article of Johnstown, Colorado as an example. The coordinates are in both the infobox and the geography section. This is also used in articles such as Lockhart, Texas and Manchester, Ohio. To be honest, this is still kind of confusing, and I am still kind of new to this. I am still trying to get the hang of editing on here, and I will continue to get help if I need it. I also feel like I should've read the guidelines and WikiProjects before creating an account on here. I also found it foolish to remove all of the messages from my talk page. I didn't take notes showing how to use copyrighted material left on my talk page, and I regret every negative thing I have said. To make it up to you, will you please read what I wrote, and tell me how you think I should do this? Also, I want to be able to be alerted to your talk page, so please don't forget to add "ping" in front of my username, and I will look at what you wrote ASAP. Thanks! My view is that if you needed to do calculations to work out the distances to put in the article, you should have left out the distances, but if you wanted to include them the Bing search included numerous links, one of which could have been used as a reference if it supported the figure you were using; note that a Bing search URL itself ought not to be used as a ref because the results can change from time to time. I believe that there was one distance in the handbook reference which you used, so of course it would be reasonable to include that one. My most recent warning to you made no mention of WP:USCITIES, but perhaps you are thinking of an earlier warning from another editor. If you disagree with the guidelines in WP:USCITIES, the place to discuss your disagreement and to suggest an improvement is not here on my talk page but on the talk page of the guidelines. It is unwise to use pages which don't comply with the guidelines as an example, as there are many pages which were written in ignorance of the guidelines and there is a limited number of volunteers who might have noticed. If you wish to choose examples to follow, it is better to choose featured articles or articles with a high rating on the relevant project's quality scale. You can always go back to read the advice which you received on your user talk page, as it is still available in the page history. On your final point, I do not make a habit of pinging anybody who asks questions on my user talk page, as I expect them to put my page on their watchlist if they choose to ask the question here. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:23, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

Archive user talk page in archive box

Hi David, Greetings. Thank you very much for helping archive my talk page into the my archive box. Appreciate it. I wonder if teach me or direct me to a an instructional page on (1) how to do my next archiving on "archive #2" and (2) how to add a user page message (a section) into an existing archive box. @CASSIOPEIA: Details of how to configure the archive are at User:ClueBot III/ArchiveThis. The archive will automatically switch to "Archive 2" when "Archive 1" gets big enough; you specified "maxarchsize=75000". Looking again at your page I see that it has now done so. If by adding a user page message to the archive box you mean manually archiving, there is a User:ClueBot III/ArchiveNow template, and the functioning is defined at User:ClueBot_III/ArchiveThis#archivenow with a further example on the page, but I've never tried to use that. Another option would be merely to cut from your talk page and paste into the archive page, including appropriate edit summaries at each stage to maintain attribution. --David Biddulph (talk) 02:22, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

Prod and AFD

Hi, I removed the WP:PROD notice you placed on Nic Fanciulli, because the article had previously been to WP:AFD, and PROD is only used for uncontrovesial deletions. Because the article had been to AFD before, the best place to settle the debate as to whether good enough sources exist to support the article's notability claim is to take the article back to AFD. PROD is only meant for uncontroversial deletions, and it isn't going to be obviously uncontroversial given that the page has been nominated for deletion before, and then recreated today (unless G4 applies). A Wikipedia article should not contain your company's product catalogue. If you delete the #Customer and #Certification sections then the draft might have a chance of survival, but that would be a decision for an administrator. Repeatedly recreating the draft after it has been deleted is liable to be treated as tendentious editing and lead to you being blocked and the page title salted to prevent re-creation. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:15, 25 January 2018 (UTC)

I reverted your deletion of the discussions from the template's talk page. I used the talk page discussion as my explanation for the change I made, and there is scope for further improvement to make that one more consistent with the others so the discussion should remain. We don't generally delete talk page conversations, but can eventually archive & delete if the page gets too cluttered. --David Biddulph (talk) 23:19, 24 January 2018 (UTC)

I'm going to have to look at a copy of the book. The text of the article seemingly contradicts the Henley website, which makes no mention of the "Henley Prize" as a particular trophy but gives it instead as the first name for the women's eight race which now as a different name and its own trophy. Yes, I've rephrased the article. There isn't, as far as I am aware, an actual challenge trophy named the Henley Prize, and it is simply a title which they have used on at least those three occasions for new events before they had challenge trophies. The 1968 case can be sourced to both of the standard histories, Dodd & Burnell, as well as to the relevant volume of the Regatta Records.
